“It was an honor for our youth club to share the Czech heritage and dance the beseda for the First Lady of Texas, Mrs. Anita Perry, on March 27, 2014,” writes Dillon Narro of Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club. Mrs. Perry was in Caldwell for the introduction of the Texas Main Street Program in which

the city of Caldwell was selected. “We danced for her privately when she arrived as well as at the reception held after the ceremony,” Macy Narro, also of Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club, says. “It was an event we will never forget.” —SPJST—

Cynthia Hutka has been designated by the Supreme Lodge to serve in the capacity of Interim Vice President until such time a successor is named. The designation was made in conjunction with the April 14 to 17, 2014, Supreme Lodge meeting. With 27 years of SPJST Home Office and Insurance Department background, Cynthia will oversee daily operations of the SPJST Insurance Department. “Cynthia is carrying out her duties with the full support and confidence of her fellow officers and the Supreme Lodge,” says Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “That confidence extends to the ability of the SPJST Insurance Department staff and field personnel to provide quality service, including sales training, to our sales agents, our members, and to our prospective members during this interim period.” Cynthia joined the SPJST Insurance Department in 1986 as a data entry clerk under the supervision of Vice President Bernie Gebala. “SPJST is my second home,” Cynthia says. “It’s a great place to work. We have a lot of good members who place tremendous faith in SPJST. I will do everything

I look forward to whatever the future holds.” The SPJST Supreme Lodge has initiated its search for a qualified individual to fill the position of Supreme Lodge Vice President. Complete details regarding the position will remain posted in SPJST’s weekly newspaper, Vestnik, through the July Supreme Lodge meeting, at which time the board will begin its review process. —SPJST— (c) Is present at the convention or has an excuse acceptable by two-thirds of the delegates for not being present. Electronic Fraternal Updates Packet Melanie is setting up my Fraternal Updates packet online. I am giving her a list of lodge and district fraternal activities coordinators’ email addresses that I currently have on file. Once she enters those email addresses, you will start receiving the Fraternal Update packet online. If you do not receive the packet in your email, that could be related to one of two problems. First problem, I do not have your correct email address; or two, I do not have your email address on file. So please get your email addresses to me. We will still mail you a packet by US mail if you do not have an email address. FraternalsGive.org FACs are receiving an insert named FraternalsGive-Help and FAQs. The guidelines also apply to the paper version if you decide to go that route. These are questions and answers that will help guide you in completing your paperwork online. If you have a question that does not appear on this insert, please contact me and I can pass these questions on to American Fraternal Alliance and have the questions answered for you. I’ve had the chance over the past few weeks to visit with many of you on this process. Thanks for making the process part of your routine. Please stay in touch if any questions come up. All Things Czech Series The Czech Heritage Museum in Temple is partnering with SPJST throughout the spring and summer on the free informal “All Things Czech” lecture and discussion series. In April and May, “All Things Czech” profiles the lives of three religious heroes of the Czech lands. On May 22, “All Things Czech” journeys to ninth century Moravia and “The Life and Times of Saints Cyril and Methodius.” Saints Cyril and Methodius were the principal Christian missionaries among the Slavic peoples and are credited with devising the first alphabet used to convey the Gospels in the Slavic language. Fr. Stephen Nesrsta, Pastor of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Corn Hill and Father Paul Chovanec, Pastor of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church of Houston will present the program. The May 22 program will begin with a reception at the Czech Heritage Museum

at 6 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. next door at the SPJST Conference Room. The public is cordially invited. District Fraternal Activities Coordinator Meeting Save this date to your calendar Saturday, June 21. District presidents and FACs, this will be the date of our annual meeting. We will start our meeting at 8:30 a.m. with lunch provided, and our meeting will end early enough so many of you have time to make it home in the early evening hour. We will discuss in detail the new fraternal hour reporting process, the Fraternalsgive website, and the district meeting election process. I will be preparing the agenda and meeting details in the coming days. If you have an item you would like to have on the agenda, please contact me and I will place the item on the agenda. I will email the meeting agenda and information prior to the meeting. Join Hands Day Many lodges will observe Join Hands Day on May 3. Lodges throughout the state will complete many excellent projects in which youth and adults join together to do good in their community. Thanks to all lodges who plan to participate in this worthy event. Join Hands Day is a program of the American Fraternal Alliance. It’s a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. SPJST strongly supports this initiative and encourages our lodges and youth clubs to get involved on this special day! Please remember to share stories of your projects, including and especially, photos on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/fraternalalliance. Mother’s Day May 11 is a very important day to all of us but mainly our mother. Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia, created the holiday in 1908 as a day to honor one’s mother. Jarvis wanted to accomplish her mother’s dream of making a celebration for all mothers,

VӖSTNÍK although the idea didn’t take off until she enlisted the services of wealthy Philadelphia merchant John Wanamaker. She kept promoting the holiday until President Woodrow Wilson made it an official national holiday in 1914. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in spring. The United States celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May, as does the Czech Republic. Mother’s Day started in former Czechoslovakia in 1923. The promoter of this celebration was Alice Masaryková . After World War II communists replaced Mother’s Day with International Woman’s Day, celebrated on the eighth of March. The former Czechoslovakia celebrated Woman’s Day until the Velvet Revolution in 1989. After the split of the country in 1993, the Czech Republic started celebrating Mother’s Day again on the second Sunday in May. Please remember your mother, mother-in-law, and mothers-to-be this month by honoring them at your May meeting. Their nurturing is instrumental in who we become in life. We must let them know how much they mean to us. Member Referrals Wanted: Participate in the Monthly Prize Drawing! Your member referrals are appreciated! When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there is no substitute for member referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he or she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest. Monthly Contests! All referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Wal-Mart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits SPJST by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge. Memorial Day, Monday, May 26 Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday which is celebrated every year on the final Monday in May. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the sum-

mer vacation season. To help reeducate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed in 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time for all Americans to voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to “Taps.”

Our guests were Cathy Mallory, friend of Mary Agnes Ward, and Toni Sieben, friend of Elizabeth Creamer. Everyone was welcomed. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins reported sending a sympathy card to the family of Lucille Kret. The Club made a donation to St. Thomas Food Pantry in Lucille’s memory, and a thank you note was read from the family. As reporter, I announced that I attended the visitation for Annie Sustala, our longtime member, and stated that Anna Johnson and Camille Bolcer send greetings as they were unable to come to our meeting. Mary Ann Krivanek reported on Annie’s funeral, read the obituary, and told about the fun-loving person Annie was. Mary Ann commented that even though Annie’s name was not in our membership book as she has been living in a nursing home, she was a longtime member, and a memorial should be made in her memory. President Sharron thanked Lola Taylor, Shirley Martin, and Rose Ann Spann for all the lovely Easter decorations. She asked those who are able to assist with the kitchen duties. According to our guidelines, April is a designated month in which we support St. Thomas Food Bank. Since this was not announced at the last meeting, everyone is asked to bring non-perishable items to our May meeting. Sharron looked into her magic hat and drew the name of Lois Smith for “Queen for the Day.” Lois got to sit in the special chair, wear the cape, hold the scepter, but instead of a crown, she wore pink bunny ears. She did look cute. The rest of us had to get up and do the “Bunny Hop.” Hopping was a little difficult for some of us older ones. It was fun . . . can’t even recall the last time I did this dance. The singing of “Happy Birthday”

Door prizes were donated by Paula Arsenault (two), Mary Schneider, Helen Skrasek, and Jo Ann Wilcox (two). The 50/50 dollar games were won by Lola Taylor and Shirley Martin. Harold will play his accordion, and Helen said that her sister may even sing for us in Czech. Our theme will be “Czech.” Everyone was asked to wear anything Czech they may have,

bring any Czech items for show, and bring Czech food if they know how to make it. I hear that we will have sauerkraut, rye bread, klobase, strudel and maybe even kolace. We will still have our fried chicken, so bring any items you feel will compliment the above. Following the meeting, the blessing was said, and a great lunch of fried chicken and all the other side dishes was enjoyed by all. Then games were played. A good time was had by all. News Helen Skrasek’s son, Ron and wife LeAnne of Oklahoma City, go to Hilton Head in South Carolina each year. When Helen’s cataract surgery

got postponed, they invited her to join them. Helen’s niece Ada Marie took her to DFW, and Ron and LeAnne met her in Savannah. That evening, they had a wonderful fish dinner at Hilton Head. Another evening they drove back to Savannah for another fish meal and live show at an old movie theater with music of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Helen said it was cold—just like at home—but they did get a lot of resting, reading, walks on the beach, and golf in which Helen didn’t participate. Helen said Ron fixed a huge breakfast each morning, and the rest of the meals were eaten out. After flying back to Oklahoma, Helen stayed a day longer and took the Amtrak home. She said the trip usually takes four hours, but there were some rail problems, and it took eight hours to get back to Fort Worth. Somewhere along the way at Hilton Head, they saw Moon Pies, and Helen commented that she has not eaten any recently. A few days after getting home, Helen received a package—a box of Moon Pies—from Ron and LeAnne. After getting home, Helen had cataract surgery. I hear that all went well, but this week she had an allergy infection and has been so sick. Get well soon. Lydia Alholm enjoyed the visit from grandson Matt, his wife Julie, and children Ellie, age 10, and Anthony, age six, from the Chicago area. Their favorite eating place has always been Oscar’s. But now that it has closed, Lydia asked what they wanted to eat. Anthony said shrimp or steak, Ellie said chicken and corn-on-thecob, and naturally, Matt voted for Mexican food. So they went to Golden Corral. Everyone got exactly what they wanted, and all had such a

VӖSTNÍK good time eating and visiting. I enjoyed visiting the craft show at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth recently. I also enjoyed visiting the tables of Mary Ann Kozel, Shirley Martin, and Lola Taylor. I even made some purchases. Margaret Sears, Rose Ann Spann, Betty and Stanley Krenek, Rita Thomas, Anna Marie Moncrief, and I along with their other friends all enjoyed the luncheon/fundraiser for Discalced Carmelite Nuns at Mira Vista Country Club recently. The live and silent auctions were a lot of fun, and “The Bad Habits” from St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Carrollton performed. They were hilarious. They even had everyone in the audience stand up and do the “Chicken

Dance,” but instead of going around in a circle, we had to waddle like a penguin and turn in place. Special thanks to Anna Marie for organizing this. I hope everyone had a great Easter. The weather was good. I spent the day with sister Georgie and husband Pete Morales in Ennis. All their family were there plus extended members of their families. It was a fun group. The egg hunt was a lot of fun for Gracie and Sarah, and all enjoyed the day. Of course, we all ate too much. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 7. Don’t forget your food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry. Our theme for the day is “Czech,” and we will have live entertainment by Harold Strand on the accordion and

Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle met on April 10, 2014 at Ennis Sokol dining room. Ann and I arrived at 8 a.m. The table and chairs were set up; that is always nice. We cleaned the tables off, and Ann decorated in the Easter theme. Coffee was made, and we stretched Eleanora Pelzel’s quilt. Before we knew it, others started arriving - Pat Fowler, Irene Prachyl, Dolores Vrana, Georgia Holy, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dorothy Prachyl, Ginny Svehlak, Geraldine Valek, Victoria Vlk. I hope I didn’t miss anyone. We had quilters all around. Thank you all. At 10:30 a.m., President Irene had her workshop. I think by the next meeting, they will have their squares sewn together - that is Georgia Holy and Dolores Vrana. By lunch time, we had 17 members and one guest - Joe Ehrenberger. President Irene led us in grace, and we will all enjoyed a delicious lunch - as always. Thank you to the set up and clean up of our food. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, the “Our Father” was recited for all our members. A moment of silence was held for Frances Pleiner, sister of our member Victoria Vlk, and Rex Spurgeon, Jr.. Secretary Dolores Vrana read the minutes of the last meeting, and Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek gave her report. Both were approved as read. Vice President Ginny Svehlak had no correspondence to read, but she read several funny clippings, which are always enjoyed. I don’t know where she finds all these funny things. Probably from the computer. Quilt scheduler Pat Fowler left early for a funeral so President Irene read the schedule. May - we will quilt for Dorothy J. Kudrna; June - Irene; and July - we will have elephant sale and show and tell. Members, start getting your items together; the time will be here before you know it. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced the one and only birthday celebrant Joyce Ehrenberger. “Happy Birthday” was sung to her. We also

signed a thinking of you card for Willy Matus. One evening, as Willy was leaving the KC Hall Catholic Daughters meeting, she tripped on something, fell, broke her hand, had a few stitches, and broke her dish. Thank God, she is doing well. She even worked at the Bluebonnet Festival here in Ennis this past weekend. Thank you went out to Geraldine Valek for donating two large serving spoons. Libbie brought coffee cups, napkins, and forks. Once when I talked with Bessie Laznovsky, she offered the Circle a double-knit quilt top if we wanted it. Of course, everyone said yes. Thank you, Bessie. I will pick it up when I deliver your quilt square to embroider your name on it. As everyone knows, I hope the Circle is making a friendship quilt top that we will quilt and give away later on. We would like all our members, even the homebound members, those who don’t come every month, to embroider their name on a square. If you have been contacted, please try and embroider your name or have someone embroider it for you. If not yet contacted, please call us. We want all our members’ names on the quilt. Eleanora thanked all who quilted on her quilt. The noodle-cutting strips method talked about will continue for several months. Members, look through your scrap material. You may find some nice pieces of material for noodle-cutting. It was good to see Sidney Bridewell and Cathy Vanden Eykel. Someone mentioned if we all saw her birthday picture in the Věstník - I had. We will have a quilt, show and tell again next month. Ann and I brought our quilts this month. I didn’t catch the names of who will bring theirs next time. I will let you know next month. Dorothy Bobalek was the 50-50 dollar winner. President Irene thanked all for coming, for quilting, for the delicious lunch, and for putting everything back in order. Other News Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger will spend Easter in North Carolina with her daughter’s family celebrating grandson Will Harris’ 18th birthday. Dorothy and Wesley Prachyl were happy to see daughter Cathy Cole and her family. Dorothy’s grandson Adam Cole played on the Mountain Water Polo team in the regional championship games in Keller and Southlake, Texas. He was selected for the Na-

The high school Adam and Andrew attend is in Centennial Colorado and has 800 to 1,000 students in each grade. How great that is. I am proud for Dorothy. I hope everyone has a happy, blessed Easter. Take care, stay well, see you May 8. We will quilt, have lunch, 5050 dollar game, and meeting. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

State Youth Director shares May updates Dear SPJST Youth Leaders, May is here and that means school will soon be out and a number of our youth will be graduating from high

school. Graduating seniors, always remember the values your parents, grandparents, and the SPJST Youth Program have instilled in you and know that they help to define the person you are today. Most of all, believe in yourself and have the courage and conviction to stand up for what is right. Strive to do your best. Congratulations! I wish you much success

with everything you do in life. I have been to several district spring meetings and Easter egg hunts in the last month. Everyone has been so nice, and I have enjoyed every minute of my travels. Many of our youth have taken the time to decorate an egg and participate in the kraslice contest. It has been very exciting to me to see the eggs and the pride each youth has in the work that they have done. Two more district spring meetings remain and then we will be in full swing for camp and youth achievement days. Online Camp Forms Campers and Chaperones: To register for 2014 SPJST Camp, log on to www.spjst.org. Click on “Summer Camp Registration.” On the Summer Camp Registration page, you will be able to register for your district’s camp. Prior to beginning the registration process, please review the list of information needed to complete the application. Please follow the instructions on the page. Be sure to read and answer each question. As always, the immunization information is very important. Type “NA” for anything that is not applicable. The form seems to

be much easier than last year’s form. If you have any questions, please let us know. Each camper and chaperone will receive a confirmation email. Please print out the email and turn in the information to your youth leader. The youth leader will have the parent and the camper sign a camp release form that will then be turned into the home office. The camp application is not considered complete until the camp release form is received back at the home office. Below is the very last day that camp forms will be accepted. LIT and Chaperone—May 22 District Camps—June 1 Chaperone Training All camp chaperone training will be held in your district. The District Youth Counselors will let you know what day training will be available. You may attend training at any of the training courses offered. If you are unable to attend the live training, please contact me and we can try and work out an alternative training.

Make plans to meet — online or by telephone — Monday, May 5 at 7 p.m. for the SPJST Youth Department’s online youth club meeting. This may be crucial for those youth club members seeking to qualify for their district youth achievement days or camp. To join in this youth club online conference meeting, May 5 at 7 p.m. CDT. go to https://www3.gotomeeting.com/join/125-793-646. Dean hudební katedry James Scott doplnil, že stupendium umožní studentům, učitelům, hostujícím umělcům a i veřejnosti prožívat historicky významou českou clasickou i lidovou hudbu. S dodatečným příspěvkem se otevírají další možnosti spolupráce, zvláště když naše hudba má hluboké kořeny a dědictví v několika částech státu Texasu. V Texasu žije významné množství občanů našeho původu, kteří jsou nyní dědicové a potomci moravských a českých přistěhovalců z druhé poloviny 19. století.
