The Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor and Military Museum, located in the basement of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas, has on display a number of uniforms which were worn by men and women of Czech descent as they served their country through military service. Uniforms worn by any Czech person, worldwide, are welcome additions to this museum. Among the most interesting is a complete uniform worn by a member of the Czechoslovak army between 1951 and 1953. Milan Knezek was born on October 8, 1929, in Frenstat, Moravia, Czechoslovakia, to Antonin Knezek and his wife, Frantiska Petrasova. This family is from house number 341. Milan’s entire family had extraordinary musical talents which were passed on down to him, and this legacy truly enhanced his experience while he was serving his mandatory two years of service in

the Czech army. He was assigned to a division that entertained the troops as

well as the public. Milan’s assignment in the army was to be a dancer, and he has performed all over the Czech lands, even after his time in the army was over. Milan’s kroje was in the possession of his daughter, Nina Knezkova Knezek, after his death. On our last trip to the Czech Republic in 2012, Nina told Darwin that she wanted to give him Milan’s kroje, because her dad was very fond of Darwin, who is his second cousin, and she felt that he would have wanted Darwin to have the kroje. Furthermore, she asked that we try to find a place to display it in Texas, so that Czech Texans could enjoy it. This kroje, along with several other photos and military documents, is now on display in the Czech Veterans’ Museum in the basement of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. Member in Czech Republic shares May Day wishes

I am wishing you all a Happy May Day. Last night, we had the “burning of the witch.” It is a leftover from the Celts. It is the final time of winter and a big welcome to spring. There are big firs in the small towns and villages and then a witch doll or other looking like a witch is thrown on the fire after dark. People dance, drink, and roast short baloney, klobasy, or hot dogs. It can last late into the early morning. Today is a National Holiday so everyone is off. It was “Labor Day” during the communist times. When everyone had to go to their place of work, then march with all other workers in a parade to the town square where the

politicians would praise the policy of the day against capitalism. After all the speakers, they would have an ice cream cone and could have the rest of the day off. The morning was used up by this parade and speakers . . . it ended about 12 noon or 1 p.m. after starting out as early as 8 a.m. Nowadays, people enjoy the day off after the night before. Some people will not have to work on Friday and others do . . . school will be as usual! I spent the day working on several patches of weeds where I have beets and beans growing. And, I’ll be planting herbs and some squash that I started a month ago. My best to you all. Yours, John Kuba Lodge 133, San Antonio —SPJST—

Step Up to the Plate! Membership Program Update Statewide Goal: 1,500 Certificates Issued Through March: 313 Certificates Issued

SPJST Vision Statement Our vision is to provide a wholesome family environment; to encourage cherished Czech traditions; and to provide high quality, competitive life insurance for our members.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

Beginning in 2014, the scope of SPJST’s longstanding Premium Refund Program will be expanded to incorporate the Membership Program incentives, dramatically simplifying the program and compensating lodges on the basis of the premium income generated by the lodge.

The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80 percent of the lodge’s annual earned premium. To receive the Enhanced Pre-

mium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria: 1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program. 2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

For Lodge Incentive updates, please contact the Financial Secretary’s Department. —SPJST—

Dear Members, I would like to say a big thank you to Ray Nelson for starting the door prize drawing years ago at the SPJST

Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Club Easter egg hunt and for continually supporting and assisting the youth. I would also like to say thank you to my awesome youth, parents of the youth, and past youth for all of their hard work and help at the egg hunt. Without all of these individuals and the support from the community, we would not be able to have these egg hunts each year. I remember the first egg hunt we hosted, and it’s wonderful to see how much the turnout has grown. We look forward to future egg hunts and many more smiles and laughter. Lastly, I would like to give a special thank you to Melanie and David for all of their amazing support throughout the years. Thank you from all of us. Joyce Bowen Nelson Youth Leader —SPJST—

It’s always a treat to see what neat items are to be auctioned off. I have always heard one of the most enjoyable things about the Seaton Picnic is getting to see friends and visiting with one another. I truly believe this. What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon. We hope to see you there! Remember, Sunday, June 1 at Seaton Star Hall! Members and anyone who would like to help out, we are in need of country store items, desserts for the meal, desserts and crafts for the sweet booth, and live auction items. Your donations for any of the above mentioned will be greatly appreciated. Workers are needed in all areas. Please remember your help is needed for preparations on Sunday, May 25 at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 31 at 8 a.m. and again on the day of the picnic at 8 a.m. and throughout the day. Please contact Joyce Skrabanek if you are willing to help in the kitchen. We thank everyone in advance for your support of our lodge picnic. With your support, we are proud to give back to the community and other organizations.

The House on the Hill By d.knape

The old house sits up on the hill between two cedars hid, they say that’s where it all began where grandpa raised his kids, The house still holds itself with pride how it glistens in the sun it is our birthplace so to speak where we all came from So many years have come and gone still it stands upright coming down the county road it makes a lovely sight, I think of all the children born within its hallowed halls and all the family history still held within its walls

recalling all the ones I knew and ones I never met, All those good relations raised on meager means are in my recollection the stuff of pleasant dreams

Uncles, aunts, and cousins I deliberate on these remembering all those stories of the way it used to be, Deep within this heart of mine their spirits linger still

and I know they’re looking down on me from the house upon the hill When I stop here, a single tear runs down my cheek to find the memories of all that was still play upon my mind, Memories are precious things within a heart instilled how precious then the memories of this house upon the hill. —SPJST—

Understanding the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act By Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott

“Our remedy cures arthritis and cancer in seven days!” “Resolve your outstanding debts! With our product, you’ll only have to pay your creditors 30 percent of what you owe!” When a vendor or salesman uses false statements, duress, exaggerations or misleading advertisements to win a Texan’s business, he or she violates the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act (DTPA). Vendors may violate the DTPA by claiming their product does something it does not or cannot do. Companies also violate the DTPA when they take advantage of a customer’s lack of knowledge or language comprehension. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) protects Texans by filing civil enforcement actions under the DTPA and other consumerprotection statutes. Businesses must comply with the law when they interact with customers. Complaints filed with the OAG may form the basis for a state investigation into a company’s business practices. In some cases, significant numbers of complaints about a business may give rise to legal action to enforce state law and protect the public interest. The decision to investigate or take legal action is based on a number of factors. Enforcement actions are filed on behalf of the State of Texas and the public good. The OAG cannot represent individual Texans, but some legal actions do produce restitution for the defendant’s customers. The DTPA covers the sale, lease and distribution of nearly all goods and services, with the exception of professional advice. Providers of professional advice would not be cited under the DTPA if opinions they give clients turn out to be “wrong.” For example, an attorney could not be sued for deceptive trade practices for advising a client to file a lawsuit that ultimately failed. Consumer education is a vital part of the OAG’s mission. The best consumer protection is widespread public awareness of consumer rights and common scams. Texans who believe they have been subject to deceptive trade practices should file a complaint

with the OAG and retain as much evidence of wrongdoing as possible, including brochures, advertisements, records of related transactions and notes about conversations with company representatives. Texans who relied on a deceptive practice to their detriment also should make every effort to remedy the situation with the vendor. They should send a certified, return-receipt letter to the vendor outlining the problem and what the company should do to make the situation right. If that fails, Texans may also consider suing in small claims court or consulting an attorney about civil litigation. – May 2014 —SPJST—

How to streamline grocery shopping

Grocery shopping is a part of life, and whether trips to the local supermarket are a daily, weekly or monthly occurrence, such excursions can be time-consuming. Data from the American Time Use Survey, which measures how much time people spend shopping among other things, indicates that people have spent less time shopping since the recession began in 2008, and many people might want to continue this trend of spending less time at the store even as their finances recover. The following are some simple strategies for those who want to do just that.

Embrace e-commerce offerings. Grocery stores have joined the ranks of other retailers in making it easy for customers to shop for food online. Individuals can browse for sales, shop according to the weekly circular and create lists that make it easier for them to track their purchases. Another change in how we shop for groceries concerns how the food we purchase makes it into our refrigerators and pantries. Many grocery chains now offer delivery service, and some even have personal shopping services in which customers fill out their orders online, and a store employee gathers all of the groceries. The customer then arrives to pick up and pay for their groceries at a predetermined time. Utilizing such services can curb impulse buys and drastically reduce the time shoppers spend in stores.

Make a list. Making a list before heading to the store remains one of the biggest time savers when shopping for groceries. A list helps shoppers cut back on the time they spend wandering around a store and wondering what they do or don't need. Shoppers can even take things one step further by coordinating their list to a store's layout, which reduces the likelihood that shoppers will make several trips down the same aisle. Bring only the coupons you are likely to use. Instead of toting along your entire coupon portfolio, bring only those coupons you plan to use. This allows you to get in and out of the store without rifling through circulars or coupon organizers. Shop the perimeter of the store. Shoppers interested in fresh foods should concentrate their shopping efforts on the perimeter of the store. This is typically where fresh produce, meats, poultry, bakery items, and dairy products are kept. Packaged, processed foods are usually kept in the interior aisles.

Visit during off-peak hours. Avoid stores on the first day of a sale, when your fellow shoppers will be eager to stock up. In addition, try to avoid shopping on the first or last day of the month, when paychecks or government benefit checks arrive. Shopping when school lets out in the afternoon is another busy time of day at many grocery stores. If you truly want to save time, shop late in the evening or in the early morning when stores are less hectic and checkout lines won't be as long.

Go it alone. Some shoppers may benefit by flying solo when grocery shopping. It's often quicker to move through a store when you are on your own.

Scan as you go. Some stores allow shoppers to scan their groceries as they put them in their carts. The scan gun is linked to their shopping rewards card. When shoppers are ready to go, the shopper then scans a bar code and the entire purchase history gets sent to the register for checkout. This concept cuts down on the time shoppers spend in line. Dallas Krouzek Disbands; Holds Last Luncheon

LEFT PHOTO: Dallas Krouzek members voted at the April 2014 meeting to disband the Krouzek due to many members who have passed away, are confined to rest homes, have numerous personal ailments, or are caregivers to their family members, and the younger members work. So no one is able to take the places of the outgoing officers who are no longer able to hold their offices for the next two-year term (most of the officers were already holding down two, three, or more offices for many years now). We all voted to hold our last meeting at a social luncheon at Forestwood Antique Mall and Tea Room in Dallas. CEN-

We hope to charter a bus in June and take all the accumulated records since 1935 down to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas. The Center has graciously accepted to archive them in their Czech Research Library. In Memoriam

In Memory of Joe Zvolanek

Funeral service for Joseph “Joe” Zvolanek, age 95, of Temple, was held Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple. Mr. Zvolanek passed away peacefully Monday, April 28, still sharp as a tack until the very last minute of his life. He was born August 4, 1918, in Temple, Texas, to Joseph Zvolanek and Mary Ilnicka Zvolanek. He married Christine Joe Zvolanek Bartek on March 15, 1944, in Belton, Texas. He owned the OK Coffee Shop for 30 years. Joe was a member of SPJST Lodge 87, Temple. A member in good standing for 71 years with the B.P.O. Elks, he was elected Exalted Ruler in 1958 and 1962. He attended 24 national Elk’s conventions and numerous state conventions and became an Honorary Life Member of Elk’s Lodge 138 in 1987. He was a formidable salesman, political critic, life expert, and popular, honorable mayor of Temple Mall. He was a staunch supporter of the historical value of Hillcrest Cemetery where he visited his wife and family’s resting places daily from 1973 to 2009, mowing grass with a manual lawnmower until the age of 90 as seen on the front page of the Temple Daily Telegram in 2008. Joe lived through three depressions: one in Europe, the one in 1930, and this most recent one. He survived polio, skin cancer, and all aspects of socialized medicine with a smile on his face and the motto that he can “live through anything for a little while.” If you are trying to decide if you know him, you might recall his brother’s donation of Czech marionettes at the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple. His story was that Walt Disney offered to buy them, but Temple actually got them in the end. If you are an Elk, you would know that he started the collection of funds to get the first big screen television in the lodge. Mr. Zvolanek was preceded in death by his parents; wife Christine; and brothers Bob and Edwin

Zvolanek. He is survived by son Dr. Ervin E. Zvolanek and wife Nadine of Longview; granddaughters Renee Nikolai and husband Leonard of Dallas and Melissa McAdams and husband Joel of Austin; and great-grandsons Pierce Nikolai of Dallas, and Andrew and Zachary McAdams, both of Austin. —SPJST—

I recently attended an FFA banquet at my school and to my surprise, I got many awards for my contribution to the program through LDE and CDE events. I was even recognized for my breeder rabbits. On May 3, SPJST hosted a car show at Lodge 47, Seaton. We had the chance to see many cars and meet new people. The beseda dancers had the chance to

The directory, which will be published in late spring/early summer, provides a comprehensive listing of SPJST sales agents and free listings to members who can provide goods and services to other SPJST members. The idea is based on the fraternal concept of members helping members. To be listed in the 2014 directory, you must be an SPJST member. Send your business card, and SPJST lodge number to: SPJST Member Services Directory c/o Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503-0100 You may also email your information to the Editor melaniez@vvm.com All materials must be submitted no later than Friday, May 23, 2014.
