Car Show Success! Thanks to each and every person who participated in the 9th Annual

SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration held Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. What a wonderful day it was! The parking lot was overflowing with some of the most beautiful show cars in the state of Texas. Star Hall—inside and outside—was filled with so many activities and people. We estimate the attendance to be around 3,000 people throughout the day. It was awesome. And, a very special thank you to each and every person who volunteered at this event. The day would have never happened without our team of amazing volunteers. Thanks to Lodge 47, Seaton and Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club for hosting the event and serving food and beverages throughout the day. We appreciate you all so very much. I received the sweetest note from one of our car show donors and participants. It really warmed my heart.

Melanie, Just wanted to thank you, your staff, and volunteers for the great job at the car show. The change in venue did not hurt at all—probably helped. I am always amazed at your leadership ability, and how whatever you are involved in gets accomplished in a great manner. You are a great asset to SPJST. I only hope the board and officers realize this. Thanks again for your business and friendship. H.G. ‘Butch’ Doss SPJST Lodge 66, Waco

Polka Fest Fun in Ennis SPJST participated in the National Polka Festival in Ennis on Saturday, May 24. The morning began with the nice parade traveling through downtown Ennis. The SPJST Float was decorated with Smurfs donning Czech kroj and featuring members of Lodge 25, Ennis and State Queen Julia, King Sam, Duchess Emma, and Duke Ethan. The float received a beautiful trophy. In the early afternoon, SPJST sponsored the kolache eating contest. Girls, boys, ladies, and men stepped up to the tables to eat kolaches (one for the kids, two for the ladies, and three for the men) as fast as they can! The quickest eaters were awarded cash and trophies. It was very entertaining, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen kolaches — or anything — eaten so quickly! It was great to meet Theresa Cernoch Parker of Polka On! Theresa publishes a weekly newsletter of all of the polka dances/events going on around the state. It is very interesting and a great way to find out about all of the happenings. Be sure to sign up for her newsletter at www.polkabeat.com.

Sincere Sympathy We extend heartfelt sympathy to Executive Assistant to the Financial Secretary Lisa Kirby and Underwriting Assistant Lori Slack. Their mother Doris Coots of Lodge 24, Cyclone passed away on May 26. Funeral service was held May 29 in Zabcikville. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lisa, Lori, and the entire Coots family. —SPJST—

Dear SPJST, I want to say that I have been involved in SPJST for 10 years, and it has been so amazing being a part of a youth club with such great people. I love all of the activities that SPJST offers — especially summer camp and Leaders-in-Training camp. I want to say that I am so honored to have been a part of this organization my whole life growing up. It has been such a special part of my life with many great memories. This year is my last year of SPJST, and I am now graduating and moving on to the next chapter in my life. I will be attending the University of Oklahoma with a major of prephysician associate. It has been my dream to go into the medical field, and I want to thank you so much for choosing to give me a $1,000 grant to help my dream come true. This money will help me greatly, and thank you for everything you have done. Sincerely, Taylor Cornell Lodge 154, Fort Worth —SPJST—

Dear SPJST, I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to you for making the SPJST scholarship possible. I was thrilled to learn of my selection for this honor, and I am deeply appreciative of your support. I will be a chemistry major and play softball at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth. After earning my bachelor’s degree, I plan to attend the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy to earn my pharmaceutical degree. Thanks to you, I am one step closer to these goals. By awarding me the SPJST scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden which allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school—learning. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day, I will be able to help others achieve their goals just as you have helped me. From the President’s Department State FAC shares June Fraternal Updates

Reserve Your Room Now for the End of Summer Getaway Good times await you at the eighth annual Corpus Christi Getaway. Make plans now to join us on August 8 to 10, 2014, for a fun-filled weekend. Last year, approximately 340 men, women, boys, and girls from across the state came out to enjoy the weekend fraternal celebration. The 2014 celebration commences with the Friday golf tournament and aloha party on Friday night. Saturday’s events will once again include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42 domino, bunco, and an evening party. This year, the Saturday night festivities will take on a “Hee Haw” flavor! Additional details will be printed in the Vestnik as they become available. Just as in past years, rooms have been blocked at Emerald Beach Hotel in Corpus Christi. If you have not already done so, please make your reservations as soon as possible by calling the hotel at (361) 883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rates.

District Fraternal Activities Coordinator Meeting In my May FAC update letter, I wrote about our District Fraternal Activities Coordinator meeting. I need to clarify that the meeting is for the District FACs and not the lodge FACs. I will be working with your District FAC to set up times in your districts to meet with lodge FACs and review the new record keeping of fraternal hours. Look to my July Fraternal Updates letter for those times and places. District Presidents and FACs, Saturday, June 21 will be the date of our annual planning meeting at the SPJST Home Office. We will begin at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided. The workshop is expected to last until or about 3 p.m. We will discuss in detail the new fraternal hour reporting process, the Fraternalsgive website, and the district meeting election process. I will be completing the agenda in the coming days. If you have an item you would like to see addressed, please contact me and I will place the item on the agenda. Flag Day June 14 The week of June 14 is designated as “National Flag Week.” During National

Flag Week, the president will issue a proclamation urging United States citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1949, an Act of Congress established National Flag Day. Please take a few moments on this date to pause and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag; and we encourage you to talk to your children, grandchildren, and friends about what the flag means to you. Because others have given their lives to secure our freedom, we have the freedom to participate in this national observance. In lieu of the traditional Flag Day Celebration in Temple, SPJST will host a Flag Day celebration at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14 at the SPJST Education and Nature during the SPJST Leader-In-Training camp. Your lodge may want to join with veterans organizations in your community and be a part of the celebration. All Things Czech Lecture Series Continues A total of 110 attendees turned out for the May “All Things Czech” lecture held May 22 at the SPJST Home Office and hosted by SPJST and the Czech Heritage Museum. The topic of discussion was “The Life and Times of Saints Cyril and Methodius.” To summarize, Saints Cyril and Methodius were the principal Christian missionaries among the Slavic peoples and are credited with devising the first alphabet used to convey the Gospels in the Slavic language. Their legacy lives on in so many ways in Texas — most notably through the faith which has been passed down through generations of Texans of Czech descent. Also, many Catholic church parishes and annual celebrations are identified by the names of these saints to the Slavs. Father Stephen Nesrsta, pastor of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Corn Hill, Father Paul Chovanec, pastor of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church of Houston, and Father Lukáš Jambor

from the Diocese of Olomouc in the Czech Republic presented the engaging program. The next “All Things Czech” lecture will be held at the SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street on Tuesday, June 24. The topic will be “Czech Artisan Glassware and Pottery” and will be presented by expert collector Jean Blaha Davis of Dime Box. There will be a reception with refreshments at 6 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. There is no charge and the general public is invited.

2015 State Tournaments Letters have been mailed to all lodge presidents and secretaries inviting them to submit their interest in hosting one or more of the 2015 state tournaments. If your lodge is interested, please submit your intent and choices to my office no later than July 1.

Observe Father’s Day— Sunday, June 15 In the United States, the first modern Father’s Day celebration was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton, who is believed to have suggested the service to the pastor, is believed to have been inspired to celebrate fathers after the deadly mine explosion in nearby Nonongah the prior December. Another driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father’s Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, the Civil War Veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent raised his six children in Spokane, Washington. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis’ efforts to establish Mother’s Day. She initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father’s death. How-

ever, she did not provide the organizers with sufficient time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first June Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon. Father’s Day was born as a token of love and gratitude that a daughter cherishes for her beloved father. Roses are for the Father’s Day flowers: red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died. We are here to help if you need assistance. SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts met in a special called meeting on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Sandi’s Post Office Cafe. plete agenda of lodge business matters, and many proudly announced congratulations to our members. First, “congrats” to Alfred Vrazel who will receive a 50-year pin for his longstanding membership with our society. We had planned to present him the pin at this meeting, but found him in the field harvesting the wheat crop this week. Alfred and his wife Bernice will be leaving for Independence, Ohio, for him to be inducted into the International Polka Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 30. A banquet will honor him for his 59 years of playing and promoting polka music on the KMIL radio station continuously for all the 59 years and, of course, with the Vrazel Polka Band. He will become the first Texan to ever be nominated and inducted into this Society. The second congrats goes out to Jim and Jere Wallace for representing our lodge in the SPJST Car Show on Saturday, May 3 at Lodge 47, Seaton and winning first place with their 1923 TBucket beauty. They went on to the Cameron Dewberry Festival on May 17 and took another ‘Best of Show’ award for us. Both of them are our real heros for all their efforts, time, and expense in showing for and representing our membership. Third, we thank Mary Svetlik Chudej for her entry in the kolache baking contest. Her entry came close to first place in the judging, but it was certainly first to all of us who got the extra kolaches that were made. All business matters were accepted as read which included the timely filing of the 990T and 990N, the Milam County Appraisal Exemption Notice, letter of thanks and appreciation from Buckholts Volunteer Fire Department,

and thanks for use of the hall for the junior/senior prom from the school sponsoring parents. A.W. Zajicek presented the material from the tribute to brother Frank K. who with Laverne contributed so much to our membership in all they did for us through the years. Brother Derrick Ruzicka has brought to our attention a situation that must be dealt with concerning car traffic across the back side of our property onto the Precinct One private road. Individuals are cutting across our property to avoid getting on State Highway 36/190 which is not safe. Our meeting concluded with door prizes being awarded to all who attended, and we look forward to our next meeting in June. We note that there are five members of the lodge who either are owners, co-owners, or employed by the Cafe which has helped our attendance numbers. Lodge 84, Dallas joins hands with Foresters, Texas Baptist Men to benefit TCJD volunteers

I would like to say thank you to everyone who came and helped make our Join Hands Day such a big success. Lodge 84, Dallas members joined hands with the Foresters and Texas Baptist Men. We met at the Texas Baptist Men’s warehouse, and we put together more than 750 “appreciation bags.” The bags were delivered to Texas Criminal Justice Department. There are more than 100 departments with more than 100 employees at each facility. These people are low paid or volunteer lots of hard work. So these bags are a small way to show how much we appreciate their hard work. I would also like to thank Lyn Olds (Lodge 84 member and member of the Foresters group) for helping coordinate this great project and making it a success. Thank you, Vicki Sims, Vice President/FAC —SPJST—

Lodge 32, Victoria Joins Hands for Food Bank of the Golden Crescent

On Saturday, May 3, 2014, we were able to help out at the food bank. This was our Join Hands Day project, and we had eight of our members participate, along with members of Catholic Life of Victoria and the Girl Scouts of Inez. Together, we bagged beans in twopound baggies as well as rice in twopound packages. We got rolling and couldn’t stop! Someone had to scoop, someone else had to weigh, another had to re-weigh to make sure we

weren’t an ounce over or under the two pounds, someone else had to seal, someone else had to put the items in the boxes . . . it was quite the assembly line! At the end of our three-hour time slot, we bagged a total of 1,050 pounds – not bad for a morning’s work! Not only did we accomplish the job for the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent, but we all left with a great feeling – we were giving back to the community. We actually made a difference – and oh, what a feeling that is! And, to

think if it were not for Join Hands Days, we would most likely not do it. We go about our busy and hectic schedules and think we’ll do something tomorrow – or next week – and that never happens. We are proud to support Join Hands Day. The food bank truly appreciated our hands-on work as well as the $100 check we were able to present to them. After the food bank, we all gathered at our lodge building and enjoyed pizza for lunch. It also felt good to be able to

open our door to the other two organizations – eating pizza and visiting about this and that. We all left with a full tummy – and a full heart. That’s what sharing is all about. Participating from Lodge 32, Victoria were Mike and Kathy Ahlstrom, Ray and Ernestine Fagg, Evelyn Horelka, Esterleen Spann, and Buddy and Nancy Zaplac. Others started arriving Ginny Svehlak, Dolores Vrana, Martha Ritchey, Pat Fowler, Georgia Holy, Dorothy Prachyl, Maggie Holy. Victoria Vlk, Irene Prachyl, and Geraldine Valek. I hope I didn’t miss anyone; I did - Lennie Deagen. We had quilters all around. President Irene had to leave early. Her husband Jerry had knee replacement in Waxahachie, and she thought he may be coming home. He did come home on Friday and is doing fine, By lunch time, we had 23 members and two guests - Joe Ehrenberger and Pat Fowler’s daughter Julie Mraz. As President Irene had to leave, Vice President Ginny Svehlak led us in the blessing, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you to everyone for the food, for the set up, and clean up. After lunch, Ginny Svehlak called the meeting to order, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and the “Our Father” for all our members was said. A moment of silence was held for Millie Vrla Breden from Illinois, Julie Vinkler, and George Spaniel. Secretary Dolores Vrana read the minutes of the last meeting. She also read the treasurer’s report for Dorothy Bobalek. She was working the early voting. Both were approved as read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora was also absent so Ginny read the birthday celebrants - Ann Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, Ella Mae Zmolek, and Ginny Svehlak. “Happy Birthday” was sung to all, but Ella Mae. We hope she had a good one. Ginny read three funny clippings, which we always enjoy. Quilt scheduler Pat announced that we will quilt for Georgia Holy in June; July - we will have elephant sale and show and tell; August - the Christmas quilt; and September - Irene Prachyl. Kitchen Committee said that we were in good shape on our supplies. I forgot to mention last month that Dorothy Booth donated some plates. Thank you went out to Lil Kosarek for helping Irene in the workshop. Lil also thanked everyone for embroidering their name on a square and returning it. If you haven’t returned yours, please mail it to Lil so she can sew them together. We had them all laid out on tables, and they all looked nice. As everyone has read in the Věstník, the Dallas Circle of Czech Women is disbanding its club. We all are so sorry to hear it. Our member Joyce Ehrenberger and Krouzek members have brought us their bingo cards, which they are donating to us, and a list of items that we might be able to use. President Irene will go over the list; maybe we can use some of the items. Joyce made a motion, and it was seconded by Libbie Vrla, that a donation be made to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in LaGrange in honor of Dallas Circle of Czech Women. A unanimous vote was taken. Dorothy J. Kudrna thanked all for

We will also have a light lunch afterwards. Remember, we did this last year and had a great time. We hope our Fort Worth friends can make it. Maggie Holy brought her two quilts for show-and-tell. One was a quilt that our Circle quilted for the Junior Sokol Polka Festival, and Maggie was the lucky winner. The other one was won or purchased at Wes Mach’s daughter’s benefit. Both were really pretty. Joyce Ehrenberger brought a very

old quilt that belonged to her grandmother who passed away in 1937. Joyce was 13 years old when the quilt was being made. She embroidered names on the squares, such as “Granny,’’ “Aunt Mary,” and “Grandmother.” She did not quilt on it though. Next month, Lil Kosarek and Dorothy Bobalek will bring showand-tell quilts. The noodle-cutting strips is still ongoing - keep collecting. We started selling chances on all the different items that will be given away in July. The 50-50 dollar game was won by Georgia Holy. Ginny thanked all for coming, for quilting, the set-up and clean-up, and the food.

The next meeting will be June 12. Maggie made a motion to adjourn the meeting; it was seconded by Willy Matus.

Other News Congratulations to Pat Fowler’s grandson Justin Mraz, who was inducted into the Junior High National Honor Society. Justin’s brother Jacob and his select baseball team, which is coached by his father Jeff Mraz, has won the last two tournaments the team has entered in Waxahachie and Mansfield. They even received rings - how great. Congratulations to Dorothy J. Kudrna’s granddaughter Renee Bingman who is graduating from Nutech High at Coppell, and great-granddaughter Lauren Baily who is graduating from Midlothian High School. I have no one graduating this year, but next year, I have one from high school and one from college at Texas A&M. Take care, everyone, hello to all my friends, and stay well and happy. We will meet June 12, quilt, have lunch, meeting, 50-50 game, and have fun. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

“Lexophile” is a word used to describe those that love using words in rather unique ways, such as “you can tune a piano, but you can’t tuna fish,” or “to write with a broken pencil is pointless.” A competition to see who can come up with the best one is held every year. This year’s winning submission is posted at the very end. When fish are in schools, they sometimes take debate.

Bank Account

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably combed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window. “I love it,” he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy. “Mr. Jones, you haven’t seen the room; just wait . . . “ “That doesn’t have anything to do

with it,” he replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged . . . it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. “It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. “Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away . . . just for this time in my life . . . “Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you’ve put in. “So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories!” —Author Unknown —SPJST—

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth stars as “Madison” in theatre play

Final Review I’ve been in the Churchill theatre program for my first year of high school, and I have personally enjoyed the experiences that have come with the advanced class. At the beginning of the year, I was beyond excited to be in a class with the best theatre students from the freshman class. We have done a lot of interesting projects like improvisation, poems, pantomiming, and preparing and presenting original monologues. One monologue assignment was to write from the afterlife, explaining your feelings about the afterlife. It really let me express strong emotions and was one of my favorite pieces that I’ve ever done. To wrap up the year, our theatre teacher decided to have our class perform a senior directed play directed by Jon Stone, a wonderful theatre student. The selected play was “Cheaters” by Don Zolidis, a popular playwright.

We only had one and a half weeks to prepare for this play, and I was cast as the main actress, Madison. We were rushing to learn lines, and we tried our hardest to make the show the best. I was very skeptical at first, thinking it was going to be a train wreck. Opening night came, and the theatre was packed. The nerves were overpowering. We all held hands before the show and wished each other good luck. At that point, the nerves started to settle, and I felt ready for the show. We got out there and had one of our best performances. There were unnoticeable trip ups (as there usually always are), but the whole cast did wonderful overall. I was so proud of everyone. Many seniors complimented my performance, and started talking to me as if they had known me for years. It was a surreal experience. I’m hoping to continue theatre in the advanced junior and senior class as a sophomore, and to experience more performances and friendships like this one. Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard —SPJST—

Dawn Orsak presents Texas Czech Foodways: A Cultural Legacy

Almost any Texan can tell you what a kolach is, but if you grew up eating them at family events, learning to bake them, or growing the fruit that filled them, you’re probably a Texas Czech. Baking kolaches, butchering hogs, growing poppies for seeds, gardening, eating in fellowship at a church picnic . . . these activities and so many more have been part of the foodways of Texas Czechs from the late 19th century right up to the present day. Dawn Orsak’s presentation will lay the case for why food (like genealogy, polka, and language) is worthy of scholarship, resources, support, and advocacy within the Texas Czech

community. She will talk about current activities that are models of foodways preservation in the community. She’ll offer suggestions for ways the community can further pres e r v e Te x a s C z e c h foodways for future generations. And she will inspire listeners to give foodways their due as cultural heritage. Dawn Orsak is a sixth-generation Texan who has done cultural work since 1993 and is particularly interested in foodways. She curated the Texas Food and Wine program at the

Cyril and Methodius: Moravian missionaries

By Susan Chandler Lifestyles and Entertainment Editor Temple Daily Telegram Sunday, May 25, 2015

Editor’s Note: Thanks to the Temple Daily Telegram for granting permission to reprint this article.

Many Czech communities around the U.S. have Catholic churches named St. Cyril and Methodius. Who are the people behind these curious names and why do Czechs dedicate their churches to them? Cyril and Methodius are both secular and religious heroes in the Moravia region of t o d a y ’s Czech Republic. They w e r e ninthcentury missionaries who enlightened the are by codifying both language and law for the Ondřej Novák plays people of Cyril in the Czech film Moravia. “Cyril and Methodius, I n Apostles to the Slavs” 1 9 8 0 , by Three Brothers ProP o p e duction. John Paul II named them co-patrons of Europe. In 2013, the government of the

Czech Republic and the Catholic Church formed an unusual partnership to celebrate 1,150 years since the arrival of Cyril and Methodius to Moravia. That’s one thousand, one hundred fifty years. Hard to imagine to our American minds. Elaborate ceremonies and a Mass were held at Velehrad, where the missionaries began their work. Seated in front as honored guests were West natives Raymond Snokhous and his wife Clarice. Snokhous is the Honorary Consul General of the Czech Republic for the State of Texas. The Snokhouses were also among the more than 100 persons packing the room on Thursday night in Temple for the “All Things Czech” lecture series at the SPJST Home Office. The event was the third in the series of topics about Czech and CzechAmerican culture and history. SPJST stands for Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas or Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. It was founded in 1897 by early Czech immigrants as a fraternal benefit society.

Father Lukas Jambor of the Diocese of Olomouc in the Moravia region of the Czech Republic gave a presentation of the history of Cyril and Methodius, explaining the significance of their work to the Moravians and to Europe. He also played clips from a fourhour docudrama mini-series made for the anniversary titled, “Cyril and Methodius, Apostles to the Slavs.” A trailer with English subtitles is available online at YouTube.com and vimeo.com. Father Jambor was introduced by Father Stephen Nesrsta, pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Corn Hill and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church at Granger. Father Nesrsta was pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church from 1995 to 2003. Father Paul Chovanec led the audience in singing a Czech hymn dedicated to Cyril and Methodius. Father Chovanec is pastor of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church in Houston. Cyril and Methodius were two brothers born in Thessalonica, Macedonia in 827 and 869, respectively. They learned the Slavic language, it is believed, from their mother. Cyril was

born Constantine and lived by that name until just before his death, when he entered a monastery and changed it. The two were outstanding scholars and linguists. The historical country of Great Moravia at the time was ruled by Prince Rostislav. Rostislav did not trust the Bavarian priests who were working and expanding in his country and wanted to counteract their influence. He asked church leaders both in Rome to the west and Constantinople to the east to send missionaries. Rome did not respond, but the Greeks did. Emperor Michael III and church patriarch Photius sent Cyril and Methodius. Moravians had no written language and Bavarian priests celebrated Mass entirely in Latin including Bible readings. Since the people were not allowed to hear the scriptures in their own tongue, there was little understanding of the faith. This afforded the Bavarians quite a bit of control since they could arbitrarily interpret the scripture to their congregation. Cyril developed an alphabet for the Moravian language based on his native Greek, but with some added letters to represent unique sounds. He used the symbol of a Christian cross for the letter A, a reminder of the primary purpose of his work, to give the Moravians the Bible in their own language. His work was much like the Wycliffe missionary linguists today, who live among people for decades to develop a written language and bring literacy to whole people groups. Methodius created a written code of law for the land, something it had lacked. Without this, nobles could rule at their own pleasure and whim. Prince Rostislav adopted the linguistic work and implemented Methodius’

code of law. Cyril’s practice of saying Mass in the Moravian language angered the Bavarians, who actively opposed and persecuted Cyril and Methodius until their death and even afterward, When Prince Rostislav was overthrown, the Bavarians destroyed the linguistic works and exiled Cyril’s students and disciples from the country. Afterward, Pope Stephen V forbade the use of Slavonic liturgy and required Mass in Latin. However; the exiled students took the work to other countries, one reason that so many Slavic languages still use a form of Cyril’s alphabet today, the Cyrillian Alphabet The Greek Orthodox Church canonized Cyril and Methodius soon after their deaths. The Roman Catholic Church followed suit in 1880.
