Remembering Lidice
For centuries, Lidice was an ordinary agricultural village, which belonged to the Buštehrad manor, located in a shallow valley of the Lidice Creek in the Kladno district some 20 km west of Prague. The village is a quiet town that lies adjacent to valleys and of meadows, with a few stone ruins of a farmhouse and church, and a striking bronze sculpture of children. What happened to Lidice on June 10, 1942, shocked the entire world: the German government announced that it had destroyed the small village of Lidice, Czechoslovakia, killing every adult male and some 52 women. All surviving women and children were then deported to concentration camps or if found suitable to be “Germanized” - sent to the greater Reich. The Nazis then proudly proclaimed that the village of Lidice, its residents, and its very name, were now forever blotted from memory.

Czechoslovakia ceased to exist in March 1939 when Hitler occupied the rest of the Czech lands, and the remaining part of Slovakia became a Nazi puppet state. Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia had tragic consequences for Lidice. In order to suppress the growing antiFascist resistance movement, security police chief SS Obergruppenfuhrer

VӖSTNÍK
Come See Us in Temple! What a wonderful surprise it was to see Lodge 84, Dallas mem-
bers Bessie Petr and Lynda Novak walk through the doors of the SPJST Home Office! Thanks to both of these special ladies for stopping by and visiting. They were picking up a load of scrapbooks that have been scanned in to be archived. The scrapbooks will soon be available on SPJST’s website in a special online archive area. How exciting it will be for members to relive these magical moments of the past. Sister Bessie represents District Three on the Publication Committee. She is also proudly serving her 63rd year as Lodge 84 Youth Leader. Daughter Lynda is assistant youth leader. Bessie served as District Three Youth Counselor from 1982 until April 27, 2014. Lynda served as Assistant DYC also until April 27. Thanks to both of these ladies for their very dedicated service to SPJST and the Youth Program for all of these years. If your lodge or youth club has scrapbooks or any type of historical data that you would like scanned in to be permanently archived, please call (800) 727-7578 or (254) 5340807 or email melaniez@vvm.com. After scanning and verifying, the scrapbooks/historical data will be returned to the lodge or youth club.
Visit Temple this Summer If you are traveling near or through Temple this summer, come on by and visit us at the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street. Be sure to see the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s (TCGS) Czech Veterans’ Military Museum and Wall of Honor and the display in the Pioneer Room that are located in the basement of the Home Office. And, now, something else that’s special — the Vestnik Reading
Room featuring available online Vestniks dating back to 1912. (Many thanks to TCGS for scanning all of these years of Vestniks and making this important SPJST historical archive possible.) Plus, walk or drive a little ways down the block to the wonderful Czech Heritage Museum at 119 West French Avenue and see many displays and exhibits. You can easily spend an afternoon, a whole day, or even several days enjoying all of this while learning so much. I think this certainly makes Temple “The Czech Capital of Texas!” Come on by. We’d love to see you and welcome you to Temple and your SPJST Home Office!
This Week’s Funny A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said, “Jesus knows you’re here.” The burglar nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard, “Jesus is watching you.” Startled, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot. “Did you say that?” he hissed at the parrot. “Yes,” the parrot confessed, then squawked, “I’m just trying to warn you that he’s watching you.” The burglar relaxed. “Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?” “Moses,” replied the bird. “Moses?” the burglar laughed. “What kind of people would name a bird Moses?” “The kind of people who would name a Rottweiler ‘Jesus.’” —SPJST—

Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka to Address SPJST Flag Day Observance at Cooper Farm SPJST Leaders-in-Training (LITs) meet this weekend—Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14, 2014—for leadership instruction at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. In conjunction with the three-day workshop, LITs will observe Flag Day at 11:30 a.m. with a ceremony led by Fayette County Judge Ed Judge Janecka Janecka. “Judge Janecka has visited Cooper Farm before and we’re excited to have him back,” says SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “The judge has tremendous respect for our nation and an great appreciation for the land and ideas that SPJST Education and Nature Center seeks to convey.” Approximately 110 LITs and adult volunteers are anticipated to participate in the Flag Day observance, which will include the posting of the colors, a presentation by Judge Janecka, and the reading of the winning entry in the SPJST 2014 Flag Day Essay Contest. Judge Ed Janecka is a fifth generation Fayette County citizen. He was born and raised on a farm in Dubina,
Texas. He grew up on a farm, the youngest of six children and received two bachelor of science degrees from Sam Houston State University. Judge Janecka served his country in Vietnam. He was stationed in Qui Nhon and was assigned to the U.S. Military Assistance Command. Judge Janecka and his family are members of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Dubina, one of the famous “painted churches.” He was instrumental in painting and helping organize the restoration of the Dubina church. In recent years, SPJST has partnered with William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple to observe Flag Day. In 2014, SPJST will be joining forces with the Courtney Home to observe Patriot Day on September 11. Patriot Day is recognized by U.S. law as the official day of remembrance for the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and has been observed every year since. While the events took place within the USA, the shock and grief experienced in response to the attacks was shared across the globe, and for this reason, Patriot Day is observed not only in the United States, but all over the world. —SPJST—

Lodge 191, Lufkin reports on May activities
Well, here it is the middle of the year. Where in the world does the time go? It seems like yesterday I was typing January; now it is June, and in a few short days, I will be typing December. I always heard the older you get, the faster time goes. When I was young, I did not believe it. Now I can see that it is true. We just have to make the best of everyday; be thankful for what we have, love your family and friends, and pray that we do the right things in this life. Those of us who were at the May dance had a good time. As usual, Nathan Ham and the Country Boys did a fine job of playing music and just putting on a good show. It is not always the music that makes you have a good time; it is the entertainment that goes along with it. The music, the food, and the entertainment were great! Everyone seemed to have a good time. Thanks to all of the cooks who brought food; we did not leave hungry. In fact, the band got to have some of the left over food to eat on their way home and appreciated it very much. It is hard for them to eat before a dance because it is hard to play on a full stomach. So, after the dance is probably better for them. Along with the 50-50 drawing, we had two bouquets of flowers that were
part of the decorations to give away. Roy Luce and Jane Bentley won the bouquets. Tickets to a dance were won by James Hahn and David English. James Reeves won the money which was $56.50. The total was $113 so that means $56.50 went into the SPJST Scholarship Fund. Thanks to all of you who participate in our drawing each month. It helps the winners and the lodge, also. There is another key for the lodge post office box somewhere. If you have this key, or know who does, would you please turn it in to Sarah Oliver or an officer of the lodge or else we will have to pay for this key. Thanks to all of you who donated money to help pay for the tubs that the decorations are stored in. A collection was taken up at the last Lufkin Dance Club dance, but we forgot to take up a collection at the last lodge dance. If you would like to help pay for these tubs, we will take up a collection at the June dance. Only two people paid for the tubs, and they were not cheap. Elizabeth Cavanaugh is hopefully on the mend after her hip surgery. Bobby Lee Friday is halfway through her chemo treatments. Please pray for both of these ladies and their families. Newsletter Items Needed If anyone wants to add anything or have something to put in the newsletter, please call George of Pat Scogin; the number is (936) 875-2867. If we are not at home, just leave a message, and I will see that it gets in the next newsletter.

Next Dance—June 20 The next dance is June 20 with Glenn Lenderman and Friends. Glenn and his band always have a good show. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. and goes until 10:30 pm. The cost is $6 for members and $7 for guests. The dances are always the third Friday night of every month. If you would like to become a member of SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin, please ask for an application at the next dance. The yearly dues for social members are $15 per year, and you will get to get in the regular dances for $6 each time.
Next Meeting—June 16 The next lodge meeting is June 16 at the lodge and starts at 7 p.m. It usually lasts about an hour. This is where the rules and regulations are made. One person cannot do anything; it takes a lot of people to run this lodge. No one has volunteered to be a host for any of the dances for the rest of the year. If you want to keep dancing, volunteers are needed. There is a board at the lodge where you can sign your name and the month you wish to be a host. It really takes two couples or four people to do this. The next Lufkin Dance Club dance will be Friday, June 13 with the Caddo Creed Band, and the theme is Saddles and Spurs. Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Member Jerry Sijansky Honored with TOCA Award
Brother Jerry Sijansky, Sokol Corpus Christi Honored Submitted by Chuck Kalat American Sokol, May 2014
Each year, the Texans of Czech Ancestry organization invites each of its member groups to honor one of their members for outstanding contributions to the preservation of the Czech culture and service to the Czech community. The award event takes place at Texas Czech Heritage and Culture Center in La Grange Texas. This year, delegates to the 2013 annual meeting of the American Sokol Southern District chose Jerry Sijansky of Sokol Corpus Christi for recognition of his contributions to Sokol and the Czech community. Below are the presentation remarks of Bob Podhrasky, Southern District President: “Jerry comes from a family who values the traditions of their Czech ancestors and unselfish contribution to community. Jerry’s grandparents settled in the Corpus Christi area where Jerry’s mother and father met at Sokol while participating in gymnastic classes. After marriage, Jerry’s parents continued their lifelong participation in Sokol with sons Jerry and Randy joining the gymnastic classes a preschoolers. “A longtime tradition for Sokol is the Slet. At the close of World War II as the soldiers came back to their families, Sokol activities resumed around the state. The first post war Slet in Texas was held in Corpus Christi and Jerry, at the age of six, had his first opportunity to participate. Since then, he has seldom missed this annual event, although now he has graduated to the spectator division. “Jerry met and married Jill, and together they raised four children Wayne, Nancy, Lauri, and Gerilyn. For the Sijansky family, going to Sokol as a family for gym classes, dances, meetings, and other events was the norm. In 1970, Jerry was elected as head gym instructor, a position he held for 16 years. His service during this time allowed him to lead, coach, and mentor an entire generation of children and young adults. A 16year commitment to be at Sokol several times a week to help others with no compensation other than the satis-

faction of helping others is commendable. “In 2006, Jerry was elected president of Sokol Corpus Christi and is currently serving in that position. He has also served on its building committee, helped host Sokol National Instructor Schools, chaired Slet Committees, and has been a key figure in the success of Sokol in Corpus Christi, specializing in sweat equity. Jerry is also a delegate and current membership chairman of the Sokol Southern District. “One of the highlights of Jerry’s life was to travel in 2012 to Prague to participate with his daughter Gerilyn in the 150th year celebration of Sokol. He carried the District Flag while Gerilyn carried the Sokol Corpus Christi Flag in the traditional Slet Parade that is made up of over 10,000 participants, and winds through Prague. They also carried the flags in the opening Slet ceremonies with fellow Sokols from around the world. “We also want to acknowledge Jerry’s contribution to the community. Jerry is also an active SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member and has represented his lodge at several conventions. He also serves as vice president and sales agent at Lodge 79. He serves as a director of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes. Jerry received the Jefferson Volunteer award presented by the Cor-
pus Christi Caller Times/KRIS Channel 6.” “The Texans of Czech Ancestry is organized to improve and facilitate communication among the Czech founded organizations operating in Texas; to help member organizations to mutually assist one another in their pursuit of the preservation and promotion of the Czech language, culture, and heritage in general, citizenship, fraternalism, mutual aid, and other activities, services, and products; and to encourage/conduct public relations activities which will acquaint all Czech Texans, their friends, and the public everywhere with the history, contributions, and present status of persons of Czechoslovak decent on the local, state, national, and world scenes. Editor’s Note: Thanks to SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi President Mark Rebecek for sharing this article with the Vestnik. Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
Here we are at the end of another school year and the beginning of summer. We send our congratulations to all of the young people and their families who are ending one phase of their lives and starting another. Well done, and look out world they’re on their way. The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 met on May 13, with 46 members including men and guest Jessica Martinez. We began the meeting by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and President Marlene Bass welcomed all. Theretta Praslicka read an article on the history of Mother’s Day and as usual opened with a sweet prayer. Minutes were read and approved, and the financial report was given by Margaret Laymance. As Sunshine Chairman, Margaret announced that she sent a card to Mary Ann Adcock on her recent illness. Although she was still not in tiptop shape, she was able to be with us on this day. It was good to see her up and about getting better. We always miss those of you who are not up-topar and send our prayers for wellness and improvement. President Marlene asked for suggestions to make our meetings a little more interesting, and one idea that surfaced was from Sandy Celusniak. The birthstone for June is a pearl. So it was decided that everyone would wear their pearls to the next meeting. I can’t wait to see what happens and what stories we will hear about their history. I think I’ll go to Dollar Tree for mine. President Marlene thanked Gloria
Farek for the adorable “butterfly-egg” rings she made for each of us, as well as our little one, Charlie, who brought a treat for all of his “mothers” or should I say grandmothers at the meeting. It was so thoughtful of each of you. Our lovely hostesses were recognized for their work in the kitchen. Betty Lloyd and her family plus one were there in full force. We had (I hope I get this right) granddaughter Chelsey Davidson; daughter Cherie Price; Cherie’s good friend Allison Hollenbach; and guest Jessica Martinez running after Charlie and keeping him occupied.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Sunny Kercho and Doris Overstreet. And to those who were not attending this month, we hope each of you had a happy day. One special member, Cihacek, had a significant birthday this year, and we missed honoring her. However, President Marlene did go by her home later in the day to take her flowers and candy, and it was my understanding that she was taken to a birthday lunch later in the week. News Flashes 1. Lydia Alholm just got back from WinStar with a wad of cash in her purse. Big, big winner!

2. Pauline Morbitzer’s son was visiting from Albuquerque, New Mexico, which she always loves. 3. Theretta Praslicka’s granddaughter just married and honeymooned in Prague. She and the new husband could not find a kolache anywhere in the city. They did learn, however, that pivo was cheaper than tea. So . . . there was a lot of pivo drinking. 4. Evelyn Scaff’s grandson was married the prior week to our meeting in Louisiana. Although it was to be an outdoor event: that didn’t happen. It rained! So they married in a barn and had a wonderful time. Someone relayed that it is good luck if it rains on one’s wedding day. The grandson also graduated from med school in Houston and will be starting his residency in New York. 5. Gloria Farek’s granddaughter graduated from Texas Women’s University in Denton as magna cum laude. 6. President Marlene’s granddaughter graduated from Notre Dame with a masters degree in accounting. 7. Lois Smith’s granddaughter graduated from Stephen F. Austin and already has employment with FWISD. 8. Our last entry was from Mary Ann Albrecht. Her son asked what she wanted for Mother’s Day. Now, he has a 1936 Coupe, and she said she wanted to go riding in his car. They did, and while they were out they stopped at Sonic Drive-In for a drink. The experience took her back a few years, and she loved every minute of it. 9. Sherrie Watkins then reported on activities for the lodge hall. And, she announced that they have a good number of bookings beginning in June all the way to the end of the year. Exciting stuff and way to go, Sherrie!

In honor of Memorial Day, we did want to recognize our World War II and Korean war heroes. We knew that Kitty Rippin was in the Navy, that she was a pilot, and now we know she was a Machinist Mate 3rd Class. Lydia Alholm was a personnel supervisor in communications and in charge of 112 Waves. Her story is quite long and interesting, and I loved hearing it. She did send me a news clipping of her history which I will bring to the Ladies Circle meeting in June. Robert Lee Kurtnick was in the Marines, as was his visitor, Larry Kaye. “Uncle Robert” was injured in the Korean conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal because of his injuries. We offer our thanks to each of you for your sacrifices at such early ages. We appreciate all that you did for this country and for us. Last of all, there were door prizes: 11 in all. Theretta told a blonde joke that brought much laughter. The blessing for lunch followed after the laughter died down, and Wilma Perry shared Harold Strand music on her CD player while we ate. We enjoyed hearing that good ol’ Czech music. It was a good meeting with good camaraderie, and ending with good bingo. As always, we would love to have anyone visit our meetings and enjoy the fellowship that we have. You are welcome. Fraternally yours, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

Carl’s Garden
Carl was a quiet man. He didn’t talk much. He would always greet you with a big smile and a firm handshake. Even after living in our neighborhood for over 50 years, no one could really say they knew him very well. Before his retirement, he took the bus to work each morning. The lone sight of him walking down the street often worried us. He had a slight limp from a bullet wound received in World War II. Watching him, we worried that although he had survived World War II, he may not make it through our changing uptown neighborhood with its ever-increasing random violence, gangs, and drug activity. When he saw the flyer at our local church asking for volunteers for caring for the gardens behind the minister’s residence, he responded in his characteristically unassuming manner. Without fanfare, he just signed up. He was well into his 87th year when the very thing we had always feared finally happened. He was just finishing his watering for the day when three gang members approached him. Ignoring their attempt to intimidate him, he simply asked, “Would you like a drink from the hose?” The tallest and toughest-looking of the three said, “Yeah, sure,” with a malevolent little smile. As Carl offered the hose to him, the other two grabbed Carl’s arm, throwing him down. As the hose snaked crazily over the ground, dousing everything in its way, Carl’s assailants stole his retirement watch and his wallet, and then fled. Carl tried to get himself up, but he had been thrown down on his bad leg. He lay there trying to gather himself as the minister came running to help him. Although the minister had witnessed the attack from his window, he couldn’t get there fast enough to stop it. “Carl, are you okay? Are you hurt?” the minister kept asking as he helped Carl to his feet. Carl just passed a hand over his brow and sighed, shaking his head. “Just some punk kids. I hope they’ll wise-up someday.” His wet clothes clung to his slight frame as he bent to pick up the hose. He adjusted the nozzle again and started to water. Confused and a little concerned, the minister asked, “Carl, what are you doing?” “I’ve got to finish my watering. It’s

been very dry lately,” came the calm reply. Satisfying himself that Carl really was all right, the minister could only marvel. Carl was a man from a different time and place. A few weeks later the three returned. Just as before their threat was unchallenged. Carl again offered them a drink from his hose. This time they didn’t rob him. They wrenched the hose from his hand and drenched him head to foot in the icy water. When they had finished their humiliation of him, they sauntered off down the street, throwing catcalls and curses, falling over one another laugh-
ing at the hilarity of what they had just done. Carl just watched them. Then he turned toward the warmth giving sun, picked up his hose, and went on with his watering. The summer was quickly fading into fall. Carl was doing some tilling when he was startled by the sudden approach of someone behind him. He stumbled and fell into some evergreen branches. As he struggled to regain his footing, he turned to see the tall leader of his summer tormentors reaching down for him. He braced himself for the expected attack.

“Don’t worry, old man, I’m not gonna hurt you this time.” The young man spoke softly, still offering the tattooed and scarred hand to Carl. As he helped Carl get up, the man pulled a crumpled bag from his pocket and handed it to Carl. “What’s this?” Carl asked. “It’s your stuff,” the man explained. “It’s your stuff back. Even the money in your wallet.” “I don’t understand,” Carl said. “Why would you help me now?” The man shifted his feet, seeming embarrassed and ill at ease. “I learned something from you,” he said. “I ran with that gang and hurt people like you. We picked you because you were old, and we knew we could do it. But every time we came and did something to you, instead of yelling and fighting back, you tried to give us a drink. You didn’t hate us for hating you. You kept showing love against our hate.” He stopped for a moment. “I couldn’t sleep after we stole your stuff, so here it is back.” He paused for another awkward moment, not knowing what more there was to say. “That bag’s my way of saying thanks for straightening me out, I guess.” And with that, he walked off down the street. Carl looked down at the sack in his hands and gingerly opened it. He took out his retirement watch and put it back on his wrist. Opening his wallet, he checked for his wedding photo. He gazed for a moment at the young bride that still smiled back at him from all those years ago. He died one cold day after Christmas that winter. Many people attended

his funeral in spite of the weather. In particular, the minister noticed a tall, young man that he didn’t know sitting quietly in a distant corner of the church. The minister spoke of Carl’s garden as a lesson in life. In a voice made thick with unshed tears, he said, “Do your best and make your garden as beautiful as you can. We will never forget Carl and his garden.” The following spring, another flyer went up. It read: “Person needed to care for Carl’s garden.” The flyer went unnoticed by the busy parishioners until one day when a knock was heard at the minister’s office door. Opening the door, the minister saw a pair of scarred and tattooed hands holding the flyer. “I believe this is my job, if you’ll have me,” the young man said. The minister recognized him as the same young man who had returned the stolen watch and wallet to Carl. He knew that Carl’s kindness had turned this man’s life around. As the minister handed him the keys to the garden shed, he said, “Yes, go take care of Carl’s garden and honor him.” The man went to work and, over the next several years, he tended the flowers and vegetables just as Carl had done. During that time, he went to college, got married, and became a prominent member of the community. But he never forgot his promise to Carl’s memory and kept the garden as beautiful as he thought Carl would have kept it. One day he approached the new minister and told him that he couldn’t care for the garden any longer. He explained with a shy and happy smile, “My wife just had a baby boy last night, and she’s bringing him home on Saturday.” “Well, congratulations!” said the minister, as he was handed the garden shed keys. “That’s wonderful! What’s the baby’s name?” “Carl,” he replied. —Author Unknown Editor’s Note: Thanks to Czech Heritage Museum President Jerry Milan of Lodge 154, Fort Worth for sharing this beautiful, touching story. —SPJST—

Small landscaping projects such as edging and mulching can make a huge difference in the way your yard looks. Edging offers functional benefits by separating the garden from the rest of the yard, and keeps plants healthy in the gardening bed. mate, your grass is likely looking brown or tan, rather than green,” says Danika Herrick, blogger for Gorgeous Shiny Things and a member of the True Value DIY Squad. “Yard improvement doesn’t have to be daunting. Simple weekend projects like edging, mulching or even fertilizing give your lawn the nutrients and updates it needs for strong roots and a lush green appearance that will last all summer long.” Backyard Gatherings Extend the dining experience outdoors – everything tastes better alfresco with family and friends. If you haven’t had a chance to fire up your grill this season, dust it off and then take a close look at all of its components to make sure everything is in proper working order. Check hoses for cracks or damage, inspect burners and gas tubes and tighten any loose screws and bolts before firing it up for a well-earned backyard cookout.

I received an award for excellent conduct so now I get to swimming at the Aquatic Center. I get to go to fifth grade now. Softball was fun when I hit the ball. All I felt was victory. When I would touch home plate, I felt like a star. My favorite part was cheering for my team
and the cheer “Shake what your momma gave you.” On our last game, we lost, but we still had fun. We had a pizza party with cupcakes, and we also got a trophy. I had fun! Fraternally, Kierra S. Taylor —SPJST—
Helping Team Lela

Bingo and fundraiser help

On May 17, 2014, I helped with Bingo. Mr. Jesse (District Two Director) let me help call the numbers. My brother Colten and Assistant Youth Leader Connie Voigt set up the new tables our youth club (and adult lodge) donated to them. Then I went and helped at a fundraiser for Lela Kaderka. After-meeting fun
Today at our youth club meeting, all of the members will play in a fun game of kickball. This game will take place after our meeting is over. Also, we will eat snacks, drink lemonade, and finish up our Vestnik projects. Kaitlyn Whatley, age 15 —SPJST—
Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje youth excels in academics, sports
Today at Northside, I got some awards that I really worked hard to get. First, I got the award for EarlyAct FirstKnight Student Service Club where we did a lot of stuff. We were greeters at the banquet at the civic center. We also did pennies for polio, trash for cash, and pop tabs. For this, we got to have a party at the skating rink while school was going on. Now that was cool.
Next I got an award for Perfect Attendance. For that one, I got a $10 gift card. Then I received an award for excellent conduct. For that award, we get to go to the Aquatic Center to go
swimming. Last, I was on the UIL Music Memory Team so I received a certificate. We won first place team so I got a medal for that. There were five of us on the team. I had a lot of fun this year.
2014 softball season has ended now. I was on team Jammers which I played first baseman. I really liked playing that position because I liked getting players out. I hit two home runs, and that made me very happy. Fraternally, Kelly S. Taylor —SPJST—

District Two Beseda Dancers Host Successful Barbecue Lunch Fundraiser
Dear Members and Friends, The SPJST District Two Beseda Dancers and parents would like to thank each of you who participated in our annual barbecue lunch fundraiser on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Lodge 47, Seaton. We thank Lodge 47 for the use of the hall and Edwin Pechal for his time of gathering the food to prepare and getting his crew together to barbecue the delicious chicken. We appreciate those who came and enjoyed the lunch, whether it was taking advantage of the drive-thru or dining in and enjoying the fellowship. Thank you to those who brought desserts. There was an abundance of sweets this year with a wide variety to choose from. Some of the desserts were auctioned off. I thank Seaton Youth Club Member/LIT Brady Alexander who accepted my plea to be the auctioneer for the desserts. Brady, you did an outstanding job, and this auctioneering just may be your call. Leroy Dana’s all-time favorite pecan pie brought in $110.
A special thank you to District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and Linda; Lodge 20, Granger Youth Club; and Lodge 29, Taylor for their most gracious monetary donations. Two individuals who asked not to be recognized also donated food and papergoods. Thank you, and may God bless you, gentlemen. To all parents and dancers, I thank you for all your help and hard work to make this day such a success. Everyone pitched in with all aspects of what it takes to make a fundraiser a success, and we did it! I am so proud of each dancer for whatever job duty you had. You were excellent in your work skills. Many compliments on your helpfulness, manners, and friendly personality filled the air. Thank you to all 34 of you. Dancers performed for those dining in. They had a great time performing. Of course, several had only a few practices and were not too sure of every step. Or, could it have been Instructor Alexis, who could not move
around and used her crutch for guiding and putting each one in their spot? Thanks, Alexis, for leaving the ER and coming to take care of your duty. (I’ll be sure and add this to your college letter of recommendation). We thank Maggie Grmela, our professional seamstress, from West for joining us at the fundraiser. Ernest, we were glad you came, also. Maggie came with her tape measure, pins, and needles to mend, extend, and tighten costumes (kroji). We appreciate all she does for our group. Without Maggie, this group would be impossible. She has such an expert touch. Many, many compliments on our costumes are addressed each time we perform. Thank you, Maggie! The funds raised will go toward new costumes (kroji), alterations, and cleaning. It will also go for travel expenses, as we will be traveling to many locations again this year. A trip is also being planned for these dancers and parents to show our appreciation for the countless hours and miles put
in representing our Czech heritage within SPJST District Two. If the need arises and your lodge needs entertainment for an event, please contact me. This invitation is not only open to District Two or an SPJST function, it is open to other organizations also. Our dancers love to perform. Thank you again for your support, and I look forward to a very successful 2014 keeping in tune with our Czech heritage. We have already been asked to perform in Killeen on May 1, 2015. How exciting! If you would were unable to attend the fundraiser and would like to donate toward the beseda fund, donations can be sent to SPJST Beseda Dancers, c/o Patsy Koslovsky, 764 S. St. Joseph Road, Burlington, Texas 76519. We thank you! Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky, District Two Youth Counselor/ Beseda Coordinator —SPJST—

Leaders-inTraining (LIT) Retreat this weekend at SPJST ENC
The time has arrived! The 2014 Leader-in-Training Retreat will be at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on June 13 to 15. Registration will be from 1 to 2 p.m. This will give LITs the opportunity to acquire some great skills, including learning what their responsibilities are at camp and even learning something about goal setting all while having some fun with their peers. LITs must attend this event in order to be eligible to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders with their youth clubs throughout the year. Please know that District Youth Camp and other activities that LITs help out with throughout the year can also be counted towards accumulating volunteer hours. What does it take for an SPJST youth club member to eligible to qualify as a Leader-In-Training? LITs are active high school-aged youth who have been approved by their youth leader and district youth counselor as responsible and mature enough to be an LIT. The youth club member may
attend the LIT Workshop after completing an online Leader-in-Training application. I have provided a list of items you will need to pack for the LIT retreat. Please make sure that you bring these items with you.
LIT Camp Packing List Please feel free to bring extra changes of clothes if you would like. This is just a list of necessities. Be sure to familiarize yourselves with the 2014-2015 SPJST Youth Dress Code that is included in the youth club handbook that is available online at www.spjst.org on the youth page.
Pak jsme složili přísahu americké vlajce a republice, kterou zastupuje, chvilkou ticha jsme uctili památku zesnulých členů nadace. V této schůzi byly určeny dva důležité body progamu a to především oslava v říjnu roku 2014, kdy oslavíme 60 let práce naší nadace ve propěch vzdělání a jazyka v Texasu. Tři výnamní Texasané v roce 1954 založili naši nadaci, Dr. Mareš, Dr. Kacíř a Dr. Skřivánek, rozeznali nutnost udržování našeho krajanského života v Texasu a za tímto účelem založili Českou vzdělávací nadaci státu Texasu.

TCGS sets workdays for SPJST Library
The May 7, 2014, Vestnik contained an article describing the inventorying of books by Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) in the SPJST library. The article included a brief history of TCGS’ work in the library since 2002. So far, the work has been performed by TCGS volunteers, but

The article mentioned at some later date TCGS planned to set a day/days to begin this work on a regular basis. It has been decided to designate the second Tuesday of each month to inventory books in the library, beginning Tuesday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone interested in this project, please call Merlene Bravenec (254) 778-7285 or email her at bravema@sbcglobal.net. The Tuesday, June 24, 2014, presentation will focus on “Czech Artisan Glassware” and will be presented by Jean Blaha Davis of Dime Box, Texas. Ms. Davis, who serves as chairperson of the board of trustees of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas is a passionate collector of Czech art objects and is known for her humorous, highly informative presentations.
One of the Czech Republic’s most sought-after products is Bohemia crystal. Given the long history of crys-
tal production in the country, it is hardly surprising that Bohemia crystal now ranks among the world’s best. Glassmaking extends as far back as the 13th century, when glass was produced in the Lusatian Mountains of north Bohemia. It was in the 17th century that Emperor Rudolph II’s gem cutter, Caspar Lehmann, invented the process of engraving on glass. The dawn of the 18th century saw Bohemia as the world’s leading producer of crystal. By the second half of the 19th century, Bohemia crystal was being exported throughout the world. Glass painting was another area at which Czechs excelled . . . And that barely scratches the surface! Make plans to come out on Tuesday, June 24, and enjoy what is sure to be an enjoyable look at Czech artisan glassware by Jean Blaha Davis. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a reception in the conference room at SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. The public is cordially invited, and admission is free of charge. —SPJST—

Reinhard Heydrich was appointed deputy Reichs-protektor in September 1941. During his short reign of terror, 5000 anti-Fascist fighters and their helpers were imprisoned. The courts working under martial law were kept busy, and the Nazis even had people summarily executed without a trial in order to spread fear throughout the country. So many people throughout the Sudetenland died on the scaffold from Heydrich’ s persecution, that he earned himself the nickname the “Hangman.”

Edvard Beneš, leader of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, together with František Moravec (head of Czechoslovak military intelligence), organized and coordinated a resistance network. Emil Hácha (third President of Czechoslovakia, 1938 to 1939), Prime Minister Eliáš (Czechoslovak general and politician and Prime Minister of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, April 27, 1939 to September 28, 1941), and the Czech resistance also acknowledged Beneš’s leadership.
Operation Anthropoid The most significant act of resistance was the assassination of SS Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, “The Butcher of Prague”. The mission codenamed ‘Operation Anthropoid’ was to be carried out by seven British-trained Czechoslovak paratroopers - Adolf Opálka, Josef Bublík, Jan Kubiš, Jaroslav Švarc, Jan Hrubý, Josef Valčík, and Josef Gabčík - who had trained with Polish forces in Britain. The ambush took place on May 27, 1942 as Heydrich was being driven through Prague. Severely wounded, Heydrich was rushed to Bulovka Hospital where he died eight days later as a result of his injuries. Soon after Heydrich’s death, Nazi reprisals began when an enraged Hitler ordered mass executions of the Czech populace. Karl Hermann Frank, now Secretary of State for the German Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, reported from Berlin that the Führer had commanded the following concerning any village implicated in the Heydrich assassination:
• Execute all adult males over the age of 15. • Immediately transport all women to concentration camps. Czech leaders in exile who made the decision to kill Heydrich - Colonel Frantisek Moravec, General Sergej Ingr, Edvard Benes, and General Rudolf Viest.

• Place all children suitable for “Germanizing” with SS families in the Reich and raised as Germans. • Destroy the entire village and level the area.
The sleepy town of Lidice had been targeted because the Gestapo in Kladno had intercepted a letter belonging to a local family by the name of Horak, who had a son in the Czech army in Britain. This letter was labeled as “suspicious” and the ensuing action resulted. On the morning of June 9, 1942, ten trucks filled with Security Police rolled into the small town of Lidice in the Kladno district. All men of the village were rounded up and taken to the farmstead of the Horák family on the edge of the village. Mattresses were taken from neighboring houses where they were stood up against the wall of the Horáks’ barn. Shooting of the men commenced at about 7 a.m. At first, the men shot in groups of five, but the SS commanders thought the executions were proceeding too slowly and ordered that 10 men be shot at a time. On June 9, 1942, Gestapo agents from Prague were joined in Kladno by two companies of police in battledress, and a squad of Security Police, who were under the command of SSHauptsturmfuhrer Max Rostock, who would carry out the executions.
While the extermination squad dealt with the men, other gangs went round with cans of petrol firing the buildings. Later that evening, the Germans sealed off the village. By noon the next day, in an orchard, as John Bradley put it, 17 rows of corpses in bloody clothes, with shattered skulls, brains and guts spilling out, lay on the ground in batches of 10. On June 11 1942, trucks carrying 30 Jews from Theresienstadt transit ghetto arrived in Lidice and began the digging of a common grave for the men executed the day before. Military police ransacked the homes once again and took anything of value. All farming tools were taken, and cattle were herded up. Anything of the remotest value was taken. Any still-standing walls were blown up. Bulldozers flattened the ruins, uprooted the fruit trees and filled in the lake and even diverted the stream. Ploughs were driven back and forth across the acres of rubble, so that no recognizable outline should remain, and when all was done, they put up a
27
high barbed wire fence around the site with notices in Czech and German which read:
“Anyone approaching this fence who does not halt when challenged will be shot.”
The women of Lidice were no more spared than the children of the village. A few were executed with the remaining men of Lidice in Prague on the night of June 16. When the other women and the children were separated, nearly 200 women were transported to Ravensbruck; four of them, heavily pregnant, were allowed to give birth to children they would never see. After three brutal years of treatment, only a handful of the Lidice women returned home. In the village, the dead were left lying where they fell, and the newly brought out soon-to-be victims had to first walk past them and stand in front of them. The firing squad always took two steps back, and the scene of horror repeated itself. The men were not
blindfolded and were taken to the place of execution without bonds. This spectacle continued until the afternoon hours when there were 173 dead bodies lying in the Horák farm orchard. The next day, another 19 men who were working in a mine, along with seven women, were sent to Prague, where they were also shot. Eighty-eight Lidice children were transported by bus to Lovosice located in the area of the former textile factory in Gneisenaustreet of Lodz on June 13, 1942. Their arrival was announced by a telegram from Horst Boehme’s Prague office which ended as follows: “These children are only bringing what they wear. No special care is desirable.” Shortly after their arrival in Lodz,

officials from the Central Race and Settlement branch chose seven children at random to be “Germanized.” Nazi SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) Adolf Eichmann then gave the order for the murder of the remaining children on July 1, 1942. On July 2, 1942, all of the remaining 81 Lidice children were handed over to the Lodz Gestapo office, who in turn had them transported to the extermination camp at Chelmo some 70 kilometers away where they were gassed to death in Magirus gas trucks. It is generally believed that they were killed on the day of their arrival. Out of the 105 Lidice children, 82 died in Chelmno, six died in the German Lebensborn orphanages, and 17 returned home. The death toll resulting from the effort to avenge the death of Heydrich is estimated at 1,300. This count includes relatives of the partisans, their supporters, Czech elites suspected of

disloyalty, and random victims like those from Lidice. All that was left of Lidice was a great brown blotch of broken rubble, obscene and sterile amid the growing crops. The re-establishment of the village began soon after the liberation of Czechoslovakia in May 1945. The area also includes a statue of a woman mourning at the grave site and a statue of a mother with children located on the foundations of the original school.
