How Do You Honor the National Flag? April Dvorak • Lodge 25, Ennis 2014 Flag Day Essay Contest Winner

“Soul is freedom. Love is power. Hope is love. Dreams are revolutions.” These are the thought-provoking words of 18th century jurist and scholar Joseph Hopkinson. As a girl who wants to inspire others, make a difference in the world, and dream big, this quote has special meaning to me. I recall the day that I discovered what those words meant. I had been thinking about everything important in my life like my parents, peers, and leaders who inspired me to be the person I am today . . . It all came together when I took a walk outside and saw the symbol of freedom, power, love, and revolution. That symbol was my American flag. Just as people honor others, I do the same thing with my American flag. I honor my National flag in many ways and Congratulations to for different reasons. One of those reasons is April Dvorak freedom. I display and fly our National flag in a of Lodge 25, Ennis respectful manner to symbolize freedom being who presented her shared among American citizens. I think by performing these acts, I show patriotism and freedom. I also honor our flag by showing its power and love, just by taking action in simple things that represent how magnificent our country is. I do this by placing my hand over my heart, and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem with humbleness. I think about how lucky I am to live in this exquisite country, and how much of an honor it is to have heroes give up their lives just so our American society could be free, powerful, and loved. It is with great pride that I honor our National flag and country. I am proud to be an American. I wouldn’t be proud to be an American if it wasn’t for my Czech ancestors taking the voyage to America. Coming to America was definitely a radical

Dear Brian Vanicek, I would like to thank you for choosing me for the Denisse Wuensche Scholarship. It means a lot that you would invest in me. My future education has been made possible through your investment, and I am extremely grateful. There is no way I would be able to attend the college of my choice without the help of your scholarship. Thank you for all you have done for me. Thank you for all of your help through SPJST and for the support you showed me during the royalty competitions and everything else I did with SPJST. Being a part of SPJST has taught me a lot about myself, and I will truly miss every fellow member of the SPJST family. This fall I will be attending Baylor University and have been accepted to the Baylor Business Fellows program which will allow me to graduate with multiple majors within four years. I plan on majoring in business finance and mathematics and will minor in

communications and physics. I am extremely excited for the next four years and for the enriching experience that Baylor offers with this next phase of my life. After my undergraduate degree, I plan to intern at a New York-based investment banking firm before attending graduate school. By awarding me the Denisse Wuensche Scholarship, I am able to concentrate on my college education. Your financial generosity has allowed me to be one step closer to my goal and has inspired me to help others by giving back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help other students achieve their goal just as you have helped me. Sincerely, Collin Vanecek Lodge 48, Beyersville —SPJST—

They called him the ‘old man’ because he really was old; he was already 24. Michael Strank was born in Jarabina, Czechoslovakia. His parents later moved to Franklin, Pennsylvania. He was the leader of the group who got the order to climb Mount Suribachi. He gave the order to find a pole and attach the flag and put her up. He explained

pride that its citizens express the traditions that they carried from their original country. As you can conclude, I honor our National flag in many ways and take pride in our country. I will always be inspired by our flag, be grateful for our soldiers, and hold my soul, love, hope, and dreams in America because I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. —SPJST—

to the boys that the larger flag had to be raised so that every Marine on this cruddy island could see it. On March 1, while planning to attack a Japanese strong-point, he was killed by friendly fire from an offshore United States Navy destroyer. “The last guy on the side of the statue is Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian from Arizona. Ira Hayes walked off Iwo Jima. He went to the White House with my father. President Truman told him, ‘You’re a hero.’ He told reporters how could I feel like a hero when 250 of my buddies hit the island with me and only 27 of us walked off alive? He had images of horrors in his mind. Ira Hayes died drunk, face down at the age of 32, — 10 years after this picture was taken. “The next guy around the corner is Franklin Sousley from Hilltop, Kentucky. A fun-loving hillbilly boy. Franklin died on Iwo Jima at the age of 19. When the telegraph came to tell his mother he was dead, it went to the Hill-

top General Store. A barefoot boy ran that telegraph up to his mother’s farmhouse. The neighbors could hear her scream all night long and into the morning. “The next guy, as we continue to go around the statue, is my dad, John Bradley from Antigo, Wisconsin. My dad lived until 1994, but he would never give an interview. Whenever Walter Cronkite’s producer or the New York Times would call, we were trained as little kids to say, ‘I’m sorry, sir, my dad’s not here – he’s in Canada fishing and we don’t know when he’s coming back.’ You see my Dad never fished— nor did he ever go to Canada—but he didn’t want to talk to the press. My dad didn’t see himself as a hero. He knew better. He was a medic. In Iwo Jima, he probably held over 200 boys as they died.”

So that’s the story about the six nice young men; three died on Iwo Jima and three came back as national heroes. Overall, 7,000 boys died on Iwo Jima in the worst battle in the history of the Marine Corps. One has to remember that these were boys – 17-, 18-, and 19year-olds. As Ira Hayes said, “Of the 250 in his outfit, only 27 returned”—just to put it in perspective, I was thinking that when I was a senior at Bishop Forest High School, we had about 250 in our entire school, and it’s hard to imagine only 27 surviving. Whenever you’re having a bad day or things just aren’t going right, remember those 7,000 young men who gave their lives on Iwo Jima so you would have the opportunity to have a bad day. —SPJST—

Friendship Club of Fort Worth

The meeting of the Friendship Club was called to order by President Sharron Connelly on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at the St. Thomas Dining room. We had two guests, Joyce Helgenson who was the guest of Jo Ann Wilcox, and Joey Bunero, grandson to Rose Ann Spann. Everyone was welcomed. Our theme for the day was “Mexican Fiesta,” and all the tables were decorated in bright colors. Lola Taylor was thanked for always providing the decorations. Everything looked festive! The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. It was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes. The financial report was given by Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox. The report was approved as presented. Sunshine Person Darlene Thompson passed around a get well card for all to sign for Mary Agnes Ward who fell and broke her hip. Mary Agnes, get well soon! President Sharron looked into her magic hat and pulled out the name of Lupe Esparza for our “Queen for the Day,” who was presented with a flowered hat. A huge Mexican hat was placed on the floor, and everyone joined in a circle to do the Mexican Hat Dance in Lupe’s honor. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to June celebrants Felma

Smith, Lorraine Cross, and Joyce Helgenson. May you all have many more. The 50/50 dollar games were won by Darlene Tompkins and Felma Smith. The door prize, which was donated by Libbie Vrla, was won by Lois Smith. In my report, I stated that I learned something I didn’t know. I pick up Camille Bolcer on the days she can attend our meetings, and on the way she told me she is Czech and her maiden name is Bruzek. I asked why she didn’t get in the photo we took on our Czech Day last month, and she stated that using a walker makes it difficult to get around. I told her had I known, I would have pushed her there. Hopefully, all our members saw the two photos taken on Czech Day in the June 11 Vestnik. I further reported on the party Anna Johnson, Camille Bolcer, and I attended in honor of Annie Whitsell’s 90th birthday which was at River Oaks Community Center. All her family were there, and it was such a fun party. Czech music was playing, the food was plentiful and great, and all the grandchildren were so friendly. Annie, looking lovely as ever and dressed in white, enjoyed seeing everyone. I always knew Annie was Czech, and I learned she is originally from Caldwell, Texas, and her maiden name was Kostelka. Annie has two children, daughter Shirley (named after Shirley Temple), who has two sons and one daughter and son Darrell who has two sons. After graduation

from high school in Caldwell, Annie went to Austin, attended business school, and later married a military man. She even traveled overseas with her two children while her husband was stationed there and lived all over the United States. Her husband died in 1973. Anyone who knows Annie also knew Harold Balvin, and Harold’s son (the one he was always so proud of and is in banking) was in attendance. Son Darrell wrote and read a sweet poem titled “Portrait of Annie.” He passed out the words to “Cruising Down the River” and made all of us sing. That was Annie’s and his dad’s favorite song. After having birthday cake, Annie thanked everyone for attending and invited all of us to her 100th birthday party. The birthday cake had “Happy Birthday” written in Czech and in English. The baker Googled this and was able to get the Czech spelling. Our July dining-out social was discussed. We voted to eat at Golden Corral at 3517 Alta Mere Drive (same location as last year). Everyone can meet at St. Thomas at 10:30 a.m. then carpool over. Following, those who wish can stay and play games.

With senses beaten out of them they pray to see loved ones again blindfolded in their crowded pens depression reigns, surrounding them

ask if the sun will rise and lend its rays of hope for these poor men who cannot help but wonder when help will ever come again chained and beaten, without friends barred from all light, kept captive in a cell that with their own filth brims they endure their ghastly regimen

Sounds like a place that I once seen but nothin’s left of smithereens

Prisoners of War

S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community hosted a Father’s Day luncheon and private car show in honor of all of the community’s fathers and their sons. The men enjoyed a delicious chicken fried steak with all of the trimmings and, of course, apple pie—a favorite of most men. Speaker Pastor Summerlin of Tenth Street Methodist Church entertained the men with stories of his childhood with his father. LEFT PHOTO: Pastor Noble Atkins and his son, John Atkins. we can’t imagine all their pain most normal men would go insane through tortuous months they still retain their wits about them, in the main

with chains and shackles, they lie pinned while captors prod with evil grins day after day, it never ends with desperation they contend

we’ll never know what horror brings the depth of their dire suffering still somehow to life they cling and through it all, their spirit rings let us then praise these gallant men whose strength endures, will never bend those heroes whose example brings the blessing that the caged bird still sings. —SPJST—

State Youth Director, assistant attend camp staff training

Dear Members, On June 2, 2014, Fraternal Department Assistant Gena Weeks and I received an invitation by Dr. Jim Cain to attend camp staff training at Camp Olympia in Trinity. As you can imagine, I was elated by the invitation and jumped on an opportunity to attend training by an author of 10 team and community building text books. Dr. Jim Cain is Dr. Jim Cain the creative force behind his training company, Teamwork and Teamplay, a former executive director of The Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT), a senior consultant to the Cornell University Corporate Team-building Program and the innovator of more than six dozen team-building activities and props. Jim holds four advanced degrees, including a Ph.D. and has traveled to 47 states and 23 countries (so far) sharing his knowledge on subjects ranging from teamwork and leadership to creative problem solving and trust building. His train-the-trainer programs are legendary, and his conference keynotes/playnotes are active, engaging, and tremendously fun. Camp Olympia staff and leaders were extremely nice and accommodating to Gena and I, and we could not have asked for a better day or more

awesome opportunity. We learned how to incorporate group dance into team-building and applied these skills at Leaders-in-Training camp on the weekend of June 13 to 15. I learned so much and have lots of ideas for future camps and youth leader retreats. Fraternally, Lynette Talasek State Youth Director —SPJST—

2013 - 2014 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance

Fourth Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2013 to May 2014 youth year. This is total merit points for the 20132014 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended during the June 2013 to May 2014 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014

Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior

Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10

What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

• Letters to Bibbie •

This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie, “ written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Choceň, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.

Dear Bibbie, Annihilation of village Ležáky— Ležáky (German: Ležak, from 1939: Lezaky), a part of municipality of Mířetice, was a village in Czechoslovakia. During the German occupation of Czechoslovakia the village was completely razed to the ground by Nazi forces during the reprisals for the assassination of Reich Protector Reihard Heydrich in the late spring of 1942. Ležáky was a settlement inhabited by poor stonecutters and little cottagers. It was composed of eight

houses concentrated near the mill; this mill had created the basis for the village named after the rivulet Ležák. Since September 24, 1941, SSObergruppenführer and General of Police Reinhard Heydrich had been Acting Reichsprotektor of the Nazi Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. This area of the former Czechoslovakia had been occupied by Nazi Germany since April 5, 1939. In December 1941, several Allied paratroopers were dropped into the Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia. Some of them were sent to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich in a planned action known as Operation Anthropoid, and another group was part of Operation Silver A. Several people from Ležáky helped this group, providing a hiding place for their radio set. On the morning of May 27, 1942, Heydrich’s car was attacked by the Czech and Slovak soldiers (on behalf of the Czechoslovak government-inexile), Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš Heydrich died on June 4, 1942. After the assassination of Heydrich, the revenge of the Nazis started with martial law. Then on 10 June the vil-

lage of Lidice was razed to the ground and its male inhabitants shot. The Nazi regime chose that village because its residents were suspected of harbouring local resistance partisans and were falsely associated with aiding Operation Anthropoid team members. Thereafter, Gestapo agents found the radio transmitter in Ležáky which belonged to Operation Silver A. Alfréd Bartoš, the leader of resistance group Silver A, committed suicide in a hopeless situation. On June 24, approximately 500 SS troops and po-

licemen surrounded Ležáky, took away all the inhabitants and the village was reduced to “rubble.” All 33 villagers (both men and women) were shot. Thirteen children were separated from their families. On June 26, a press release announced the event publicly. In mid-December 1943, the débris of Ležáky was pulled down by 65 men from Nazi work camps. The sisters Jarmila and Marie Šťulík were selected for the ‘Aryanisation’ programme (both were found and returned after the war). The re-

SoundCzech ~

Of dogs and wolves

Welcome to another edition of soundczech series in which we explore idioms through song lyrics. The phrase we will focus on is život je pes found in the song Nikdy nic nikdo nemá (or “Noone should ever”) by the pre-World War ii comic duo Jan Werich and Jiří voskovec.

The song is about the changeability and volatility of everything in life. If today you say that život je pes, literally life is a dog, meaning – it’s a dog’s life”, tomorrow life can turn in to a whole different animal because nothing is finite in this world. Život je pes – it’s a dog’s life; but we can’t be sure that the dog doesn’t turn into a wolf tomorrow, the singers say playing with the phrase. There are plenty of idioms in Czech about dogs,

but the wolf is another animal the language exploits creatively. The phrase člověk člověku vlkem meaning man is a wolf to his fellow man dates back to the Roman times. My o vlku, vlk za humny can be translated as ‘speak of the devil (or wolf in this case) and he appears’. Another saying about wolves is kdo chce s vlky býti, musí s nimi výti –if you want to live with the wolves you have to howl with them meaning you need to conform to the customs of your chosen company. And similarly if you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas – kdo se psy líhá, s blechami vstává. But back to wolves: mám hlad jako vlk translates literally as I’m hungry as a wolf, meaning I’m really starving. And finally, for some reason corn or red poppy is called vlčí mák – wolf poppy in Czech. Sadly, wolves in this country (Czech Republic) are more common in language than in nature these days. If they could talk they would have reason to say something like život je pes. Thanks for listening today, a na shledanou!

Meet . . . Cousins František and Václav Veverkové

František Veverka (1796-1849) and Václav Veverka (1799-1849) of Rybitví at Pardubice, known as “Veverka cousins,” invented the turning plow. Turning plow is a plough with a ploughshare that can cut and turn the mould, or the ploughshare can finely crumble and loosen the topsoil. The birth-house of Veverka cousins exists to this day. Veverka cousins worked on their invention from 1824 to 1827. Veverkas’ Cousins’ device “Turning plow” in a significant way sank a need of a power at a tillage with a comparison of work with an old share.

— Pavla Horáková —SPJST—

The depth of a tillage was up to 22 cm (8.66 inches). Therefore, the new turning plow quickly spread around the countries of the Austrian monarchy after 1827. The Veverkas’ never got rich with their “turning plough,” because they forgot to patent their invention. It was a long time before their authorship of the invention was officially sanctioned. They themselves did not live to see it. Along with the “turning plow,” František Veverka perfected other agricultural machinery, such as a blower. František Veverka is buried in the cemetery in Přelouč, and Václav Veverka is buried in the cemetery in the settlement Dříteč. Submitted by, Ivo Marek —SPJST—
