Fraternal Wonderfulness The past couple weeks have been a whirlwind of fraternal won-
derfulness! The Leaders-In-Training retreat was held June 13 to 15 at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter. David and I visited the retreat on Saturday and spent the day with many excited and energized teens from youth clubs across the state. The day was filled with many activities. What a great program for teens. On Thursday, June 19, the Home Office hosted Business After Hours for the Temple Chamber of Commerce. This was a good way to interact with business leaders and welcome them to the Home Office. Pictures coming soon. District Youth Achievement Days began on Sunday, June 22 with District Three YAD held at Lodge 183, Arlington. It was so nice to see and visit with these talented youth and their many supporting fans (parents, grandparents, family, and friends). Another “All Things Czech” event was held at the Home Office on Tuesday, June 24. Attendees enjoyed the fellowship and presentation. On Saturday, June 28, we headed to Lodge 49, Rowena for District Four Youth Achievement Day. I was amazed at the very creative craft entries. Great job! On Sunday, June 29, it was YAD time for District Five at Lodge 88, Houston and another fantastic day of
appreciating our youth. I love attending YADs because I love to enjoy the youth and am constantly amazed by their creativity and talents. Great job, youth, parents, and leaders! Needless to say, we have a rather large backlog of photos and event summaries that are waiting to be published in the Vestnik. Look for lots of fraternal greatness in upcoming Vestniks!

Reader appreciates Karel Matejka article
Dear SPJST, Thank you for reprinting the back page article about Karel Matejka in the June 18, 2014, issue of the Věstník. I had met him on numerous occasions, and he would always try to convey his appreciation of American ideals and freedom, while still holding fast to his Czech heritage. I, too, treasure Brother Karel’s values and love America and pray that we “pay attention . . . or we may lose our freedom.” Sincerely, Margie Bubenik Lodge 81, Needville —SPJST—

Violet Zepeda is so excited that her brother Evertt Henly Sims Zepeda is a new member of Lodge 84, Dallas. Their parents are Aaron and Duane Zepeda of Plano, Texas. Violet was proud of her great-grandmother, Genora Kriska, who kept the family tradition of purchasing SPJST Life Insurance for her brother. I was the sales agent for the Zepeda family, and I cannot wait until they both reach the age of six years to join the youth club. Fraternally, Bessie Petr, Sales Agent —SPJST—

Dear SPJST, I want to thank you for the two scholarships that I received (SPJST District Merit Award and SPJST District Six Scholarship). These will help with college tuition and costs. From the President’s Department State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Shares July Updates
Reserve Your Room Now for the End of Summer Getaway Good times await you at the eighth annual Corpus Christi Getaway. Make plans now to join us on August 8 to 10, 2014, for a fun-filled weekend. Last year, approximately 340 men, women, boys, and girls from across the state came out to enjoy the weekend fraternal celebration. Just as in years past, rooms have been blocked at the Emerald Beach Hotel in Corpus Christi. Make sure you get your room booked because as of June 24, there were 101 rooms booked for both Friday and Saturday. If you have not already done so, please make your reservations as soon as possible by calling the hotel (361) 883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rates. A big thank you to Lodge 47, Seaton for setting up and hosting a deep-sea fishing excursion in conjunction with the getaway. The 2014 celebration commences with the Friday golf tournament and aloha party Friday night. Saturday’s events will once again include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42 domino, bunco, and an evening party. This year, the Saturday night festivities will take on a “Hee Haw” flavor! Additional details will be printed in the Vestnik as they become available.
District Fraternal Activities Coordinator Meeting On Saturday, June 21, District Fraternal Activities Coordinators and District Presidents met at the SPJST Home Office for their annual meeting. Guests were Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, Interim Vice President Cynthia Hutka, and District One Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick. The workshop started at 8:30 a.m., and the first item on the agenda was “Fundamentals of Fraternalism” by President Vanicek. Donnie Victorick addressed the members, and the next item on the agenda was how to conduct officer elections. We reviewed the election process from our Local Lodge Officers’ Handbook. There was much discussion and many questions and answers from this session. We came to the conclusion that we need to create a DVD on officer training and take it into each district and invite lodge officers to those workshops for training. Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak informed the group about the annual statement and how he is working with the Insurance Department and the actuary. We then discussed the audit procedure at district and lodge levels. This was a chance to review the process. At that time, Interim Vice President Cynthia Hutka was introduced to the work-
District Presidents, FACs Gather in Temple for Annual Meeting
shop members and talked to them about the Insurance Department and a little about herself. Our final item to discuss was on SPJST recording fraternal/community hours at www.fraternalsgive.org. I will be setting up times with your District FAC within the week, so watch your Vestnik for dates and times. Our meeting ended at 1:20 p.m. Please remember you will not have to complete the mid-year form like you have done in years past. All information is entered into the website and will be stored, and I will generate the reports on each lodge. 2015 State Tournaments After the July SPJST Supreme Lodge Meeting on July 15 to 17, I will be contacting winning lodge presidents by phone and letter to let them know their lodge will be hosting a 2015 state tournament.
State YAD—August 2, 2014 Mark your calendar to be at the Frank Mayborn Convention Center in Temple on Saturday, August 2 for SPJST State Youth Achievement Day. Some districts have already held their District Youth Achievement Day competition. State Youth Director Lynette Talasek has informed me about the great competition and talent displayed. For those who are scheduled for July, please check the Vestnik for the YAD date and location in your district. Please come out and support our SPJST youth both at district and state competition. Our youth are the future leaders of this organization, community, and state. All Things Czech Lecture Series Continues A total of 91 attendees turned out for

State Youth Director shares July updates
Dear Youth Leaders, It’s summer, and you know what that means! It’s time for SPJST District Camps, District Youth Achievement Days, State Youth Achievement Day, and last, but not least, the Corpus Christi End-of-Summer Getaway. District Three youth club members participated in their Youth Achievement Day (YAD) at Lodge 183, Arlington. The competition was fierce! By the time this newsletter gets to you, Districts Four, Five, Six, and Seven will have had their YADs. District Two YAD will be hosted by Lodge 29, Taylor on July 12; District One YAD will be held at the Caldwell Civic Center on July 13. I look forward to seeing your talents at these events! District camps start in July as well and our 2013-2014 Royalty will make their final public appearance in the July 4 parade in Belton, Texas. Our Leaders-In-Training Retreat was held at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on June 13 to 15. I had a great time engaging with our youth. The main concept of the camp was to convey the responsibilities of an LIT and to learn a little about SPJST and fraternalism. However, campers were also given an understanding of three different types of responsibility; social, environmental, and personal. Campers were introduced to a driving simulator that was able to give participants an opportunity to experience driving while under the influence. Participants were given a pair of goggles
that blurred their vision and then asked to drive the simulated vehicle around a course. This lesson enforced the idea of social responsibility. Next, campers were introduced to geocaching. There were a few malfunctions and bumps in the road as there sometimes are in all situations, but I am proud to say that no one ever gave up. When groups finished looking for their treasures, Forester Kari Hines came in to talk to the campers
about the effects of drought and fire on trees. Cooper Farm has experienced a significant tree loss due to the drought, and campers were offered a challenge to help replenish the trees at Cooper Farm. This exercise was to help stress to the LITs their environmental responsibility. Finally, Mr. Rhett Dawson who is originally from South Africa gave a great presentation on setting goals and having the tenacity and willingness to work hard in order to achieve those goals and that it is your personal responsibility to set goals and work hard to obtain them. Campers were also given the opportunity to participate in team building activities, ropes course, stories around the campfire, and some time on the blob. On Saturday night, everyone enjoyed a dance and some time hanging out with new found friends. I feel that everyone was able to take something away from this LIT camp, and this is what SPJST is all about! Thanks to my assistants, Tammy Martinez and Gena Weeks, for all of the help and support and to State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak for leading the team building on group dance. A big thank you to all of the District Youth Counselors, their as-

sistants, chaperones, and nurse Holly Narro who helped with the LeadersIn-Training Retreat. The Firs had the winning tee-shirt design, and I will be getting shirts to the LITs hopefully before district camps. I know that many of our youth are excited about going to camp. Your District Youth Counselors and their assistants have worked many hours planning a great camp for the Leadersin-Training, youth, and chaperones. SPJST Education and Nature Center Executive Director John Hoelscher and his staff are ready for our camps to begin. Let’s make this a summer that our youth will enjoy and have fond memories of the time they spent with their friends and family.
LIT Survey Please know that a survey has been sent to all participating LITs. The survey was sent to the email address provided on the LIT contract. I have had several responses so far, but would love to hear from each LIT in attendance. Please encourage your youth to complete the survey.

District Two Camp set for July 18 to 21
Dear District Two Campers “Christmas in July.” Not only are the stores thinking about Christmas at this time of the year, so are our District Two campers. Beginning on Thursday, July 18 through Monday, July 21, SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm will have the magical theme of “Christmas in July” with Christmas lights, Christmas trees, presents, and who knows, maybe even Santa Claus himself. The time is almost here, so remember to be at the best behavior if you want “Jolly Old Saint Nick” to visit you at Cooper Farm. I feel as if I have already been visited by Santa. He is promising me a gift at camp that I have looked forward to for many years, and each of you campers had something to do with that gift. One hundred District Two campers—yes, 100!—have signed up to be at our camp this year. And this does not include chaperones and staff. What a gift! Cristy, Amber, and I are so excited. But on the other hand, saddened that our District Four friends will not be joining us this year. District Four - we will miss you all! We ask that you do not arrive any earlier than 9:45 a.m. for the 10 a.m. check in. We as DYCs will arrive at the camp around 9 a.m. and need time to get registration together. I ask that anyone arriving later than 10:15 a.m. give me a call. We want to make registration run as smoothly as possible. All medications, over the counter included, must be turned in to Nurse Becky. All medication must be in the

original bottle with only the amount of medication needed for the camping period. Medication in bags will not be accepted. After you register, you will put your belongings on the pavilion in the designated cabin area which will be marked. All campers and LITs, please wear your swimsuit, along with a cover-up and bring a towel. As soon as you have been registered and your belongings are in place, you will be given your swim test. Everyone must have a swim test. Once you have completed the swim test, please wait under the pavilion for instructions on going to the cabins.
** Parents are required to take home with them all cell phones, (extra ones also), SIM cards, and any electronic devices which include iPODS, Nintendo DS, and MP3 players. This is for all campers and LITs. If a camper has any of the above, parents may receive a phone call. Please do not bring any expensive clothing. SPJST will not be responsible for any lost or damaged items. All cameras must be marked and turned in to the chaperone. No food or drinks allowed in the cabins. We will and have always had plenty.
Now, we are all registered, the swim test behind us, and we are ready to begin SPJST District Two Camp 2014! Here are just some activities that are planned:
Decorating for Christmas (Let’s see which cabin wins “Best Decorated”) Swimming Blobbing at the pond BB Guns/Rifle Range/Archery Horseshoes/Volleyball Boating/tubing at the lake High ropes course Hayride Games by the LITs Christmas Scavenger Hunt Santa’s Workshop Pavilion games with the staff Basketball Flag-folding presentation Free time with friends Ice cream floats, furnished by our Director Jesse and Linda S’mores and Watermelon Christmas Cookie Decorating Contest Sunday night finale—“New Year’s Eve Dance” with noise makers, hats, and the works Hope we don’t run out of time! The chaperone will make sure they are kept separate. We want to be sure to keep the pool clean and clear.
r Girls: A tee-shirt or tank top must be worn over the swimsuit in and out of pool. You may want to bring an extra pair of shorts to wear if you plan on blobbing. r Boys: A tee-shirt or tank top must be worn in and out of the pool r Beach Towel r 4 changes of clothes r 4 changes of underclothes r 2 pairs tennis shoes/socks or closed- toe shoes. We promise 2014 SPJST Camp will be rewarding for each of you. If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call or email me. Parents, thank you for allowing us to spend quality time with your youth. Every SPJST youth is special in his or her own way, and many memories are made each year at camp and this year will be no exception. A big thank you to all the chaperones who are taking time away from home and work to make sure our campers have a safe and a fun experience. We can’t wait to see you on at camp on July 18. We look forward to having participation from all 11 youth clubs in District Two. See you soon! Love, Patsy, Cristy, and Amber District Two Youth Counselor and Assistants —SPJST—

Pak jsme oslavili 75 let členství Lucille Price a odznak přijal její syn John

Public invited to celebrate svacina July 20 at Lodge 88, Houston
The Czech Heritage Museum in Temple is partnering with the SPJST throughout the spring and summer months on the informal “All Things Czech” lecture and discussion series. The Sunday, July 20 presentation will focus on “The Czech Svacina” and will be hosted by SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and Dawn Orsak of PolkaWorks. PolkaWorks is a non-profit organization that highlights unique cultural traditions through documentaries, photography and public programs designed to educate and inspire. Ms. Orsak is a fifthgeneration Texas Czech who has concentrated on the foodways of Texas Czechs. Since 1995, she has presented Texas Czech culture and foodways to communities in Texas and at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. The tradition of svacina can be traced back hundreds of years to the Czech lands of Moravia and Bohemia. The word itself — pronounced “svahchee-nah” is derived from old Czech word “svac” which meant a get-together of friends or acquaintances. “Svacina isn’t lunch, and it isn’t din-
ner. It’s something in-between,” says Vanicek. “It can include everything from sausage and sauerkraut to kolaches, strudels, cakes and pies.” The July 20 program reviews the evolution of the svacina from early days to modern times, with an emphasis on the Texas Czech svacina. Make plans to come out on Sunday, July 20 and enjoy what is sure to be an enjoyable presentation — and a delicious svacina! The event begins at 2 p.m. with a reception in the SPJST Lodge 88, Houston Chandelier Ballroom located at 1435 Beall Street in Houston followed by the presentation at 3 p.m. The public is cordially invited and admission is free. A wide assortment of svacina items and recipes will be available for attendees to sample and enjoy. Although it isn’t necessary, attendees are welcome to bring their own “svacina” specialty items to add to sample table. —SPJST—
