State YAD and Corpus Time Two great events are right around the corner. I hope that you

will join us at both of them—State Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, August 2 in Temple and the Corpus Christi Weekend Getaway on Friday, August 8 to Sunday, August 10. State YAD—Saturday, August 2 Temple Road Construction A State Youth Achievement Day schedule and information for the day will appear in next week’s Vestnik. The information can also be found at www.spjst.org. This message comes from the Fraternal and Youth Departments: “For those of you attending State Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, August 2, please know there is road construction on I-35 by the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. Members attending driving northbound will take exit 303B - Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. “Members driving southbound will take exit 304 - North H.K. Dodgen Loop and cross over the interstate then take a right onto the access road (two-way traffic) and drive south to the entrance of the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center.”

Important Corpus Christi Info And, thanks to State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak for this important message to our members attending the Corpus Christi getaway. Hands-free only cell phone usage is now the law for drivers in Corpus Christi, Texas. Please take note, and save yourself from getting a ticket! “Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Pres-

ident Mark Rebecek wants to inform all members coming to the Corpus Christi Weekend Getaway about a new ordinance approved by the city council earlier this month. The law will come into effect November 11, 2014, but you could be pulled over by an officer and given a warning and a bright orange flyer explaining the new cell phone ordinance. Mark wants everyone to know that you can use your handsfree devices to make phone calls while driving your automobile but not your phone. This means no texting or calling on your hand-held phone.” See more information at www.spjst.org —SPJST—

Ground-breaking for Fort Hood Memorial scheduled for July 22

The committee working toward constructing a memorial honoring the victims of the November 5, 2009, shooting at Fort Hood will break ground on the structure Tuesday, July 22, 2014. The ceremony is slated for 9 a.m. at the site of the memorial, next to the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. The public is invited. For the past five y e a r s , SPJST has been involved in raising awareness and funding for the November 5th, 2009 Fort Hood Memorial. The project was conceived by SPJST Fraternal Field Manager Hiram Dixon late in 2009 to pay tribute to the 12 American soldiers and civilian contractor gunned down at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009. In addition to those killed, 32 service personnel were wounded. The victims were mainly men and women who were preparing to deploy to battle zones or who had recently returned from them. The memorial was conceived as a way to honor the victims and provide a historic record of this tragedy in order to deliver a message of vigilance for generations to come. “This has been a long time coming. It’s a good thing to finally get to this stage because now we can see that things are moving forward,” said former Killeen Mayor Tim Hancock, project spokesman. “It’s really a good feeling. We’re motivated and energized.” The committee recently relaunched its fundraising campaign with a new marketing plan, which included a new website — www.November5Memorial.com. “The goal of the memorial committee is that the monument be dedicated on the fifth anniversary of the shooting — November 5, 2014,” says SPJST President Brian Vanicek. “With Killeen civic leaders and the Killeen Daily Herald throwing its media support behind the project, everyone involved is hoping that the groundbreaking will open the project up for more exposure and project com-

pletion.” A total of $188,704.43 in cash has been raised to build the memorial through July 10. “A significant percentage of that amount reflects the generosity of SPJST members and lodges,” says President Vanicek. Additional commitments of building materials, construction oversight and land have also been received. According to Mr. Hancock, $150,000 in monetary donations is needed to bring the project to completion. The bronze sculptures that will memorialize each individual lost in the shooting were completed in 2013 by Salado sculptor and artist Troy Kelley. SPJST lodges assisting in this effort were recognized at the 2013 SPJST incentive banquet. The Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial has come a long way since the Killeen City Council authorized its development on June 8, 2010. Throughout the spring and summer months of 2010, great efforts were made by a committee designated by Mayor Hancock to determine the exact name, location, design and budget. The project includes a memorial pavilion and garden and will be located on the grounds of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. The unveiling ceremony for the project design was held on November 5, 2010. “Our hearts — as individuals and as a nation — go out to the families of the soldiers and the civilian worker who were killed and to the many who were wounded. The death of those who are near and dear to us is one of the most difficult trials delivered upon us during this fleeting life,” says President Vanicek. “For those most closely involved, the last five years have been a long and winding soul-touching experience and one that reminds us that all we really have is each other, our freedom, our faith and the hope that our path to healing results in something constructive and good.” —SPJST—

Step Up to the Plate! Membership Program Update Statewide Goal: 1,500 Certificates Issued Through June: 473 Certificates Issued

SPJST Vision Statement Our vision is to provide a wholesome family environment; to encourage cherished Czech traditions; and to provide high quality, competitive life insurance for our members.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

Beginning in 2014, the scope of SPJST’s longstanding Premium Refund Program will be expanded to incorporate the Membership Program incentives, dramatically simplifying the program and compensating lodges on the basis of the premium income generated by the lodge.

The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80 percent of the lodge’s annual earned premium. To receive the Enhanced Pre-

mium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria: 1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program. 2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

For Lodge Incentive updates, please contact the Financial Secretary’s Department. —SPJST—

“All Things Czech” Svacina this Sunday at Lodge 88, Houston

The Czech Heritage Museum in Temple is partnering with the SPJST throughout the spring and summer months on the informal “All Things Czech” lecture and discussion series. The Sunday, July 20 presentation will focus on “The Czech Svacina” and will be hosted by SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and Dawn Orsak of PolkaWorks. PolkaWorks is a non-profit organization that highlights unique cultural traditions through documentaries, photography and public programs designed to educate and inspire. Ms. Orsak is a fifthgeneration Texas Czech who has concentrated on the foodways of Texas Czechs. Since 1995, she has presented Texas Czech culture and foodways to communities in Texas and at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. The tradition of svacina can be traced back hundreds of years to the Czech lands of Moravia and Bohemia. The word itself — pronounced “svahchee-nah” is derived from old Czech word “svac” which meant a get-to-

gether of friends or acquaintances. “Svacina isn’t lunch, and it isn’t dinner. It’s something in-between,” says Vanicek. “It can include everything from sausage and sauerkraut to kolaches, strudels, cakes and pies.” The July 20 program reviews the evolution of the svacina from early days to modern times, with an emphasis on the Texas Czech svacina. Make plans to come out on Sunday, July 20 and enjoy what is sure to be an enjoyable presentation — and a delicious svacina! The event begins at 2 p.m. with a reception in the SPJST Lodge 88, Houston Chandelier Ballroom located at 1435 Beall Street in Houston followed by the presentation at 3 p.m. The public is cordially invited and admission is free. A wide assortment of svacina items and recipes will be available for attendees to sample and enjoy. Although it isn’t necessary, attendees are welcome to bring their own “svacina” specialty items to add to sample table. —SPJST—

It was voted on and passed that we would support the lodge with this endeavor. Please mark your calendars for this special event. It’s always a lot of fun. Our lovely hostesses for lunch were Lupe Esparza, Mary Ann Krivanek, Marie Keller, and JoAnn Wilcox. Once again, the meal was delicious and everyone had plenty to eat. Tesar (playing dominoes), and Hermina Cihacek (a May baby). Belated wishes go to Emily Atkins, Doris Maple, and Garland Ellsworth for their special days as well. Our special focus for June was to wear pearls for the meeting. Legend has it that cultured and freshwater pearls are considered to offer the power of love, money, protection, and luck. And, pearls are thought to give wisdom through experience. I guess that’s where the phrase “pearls of wisdom” comes from. So our “pearl” stories are:

• Evelyn Scaff received her pearls when she graduated from high school. They were given to her by her sisterin-law who saved the $5 needed to buy the necklace. The pearls were beautiful, and Evelyn has had to have them restrung several times which cost her more that what her cousin paid for them.

• When Betty Krenek’s children made her necklace, they were only two and six years old. Her necklace brings precious memories and love to her after all these years. These, too, were lovely and interesting, and made of little colored pearls. • Theresa Clay’s husband gave pearls to her when they married. In December of this past year, their home was burglarized, and the pearls were taken. She was broken-hearted at losing her treasure so her godson bought her new ones. Although they didn’t replace her first pearls, these, too, hold great sentimental value for her.

intricate, and cousin Julia Deuser was a longtime member of the Ladies Circle.

• Theretta had on display a set of pearls that she bought in 1956 at the Fair Department store in downtown Fort Worth. She worked at City Hall at the time and could not resist buying those beauties even though they were out of her price range.

Sherrie Kubala Watkins gave an update on activities scheduled for the lodge hall and displayed a really large picture of her new grandbaby. She is so proud, and we offer our congratulations to the family on their new arrival and hope they are doing well by now. There were 12 lucky winners of really cute door prizes. They are such a

joyous part of our meeting. Everyone gets so excited when their name is called, and it’s always fun to see who gets what. We ended the meeting with several items of note from Theretta. She also offered the blessing for lunch, and we ate to our fill. After lunch, bingo followed. So sorry to be late with this report, but I’ve been on vacation in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

cause, you see, it is about you and me.

I remember some time ago, people lined up on both sides of the street to watch the parade and, naturally, I was leading every parade, proudly waving in the breeze. When your daddy saw me coming, he immediately removed his hat and placed it against his left shoulder so that his hand was directly over his heart . . . remember?

And you, I remember you. Standing there straight as a soldier. You didn’t have a hat on, but you were giving the right salute. Remember little sister? Not to be outdone, she was saluting the same as you with her hand over her heart . . . remember? What happened? I’m still the same

Some people call me Old Glory; others call me The Star-Spangled Banner, but whatever they call me, I am your flag, the flag of the United States of America . . . something has been bothering me so I thought I might talk it over with you . . . be-

SPJST Pioneer Room Mural Artist Visits Home Office

Old Flag; oh, I have a few more stars since you were a child. A lot more blood has been shed since those parades of long ago.

But now, I don’t feel as proud as I used to. When I come down your street and you just stand there with your hands in your pockets and I may get a small glance, but then you look away. Then I see children running around and shouting . . . they don’t seem to know who I am. I saw one man take his hat off then look around. He didn’t see anybody else with theirs off so he quickly put his back on. And, what about that night at the baseball game? When they played the Star-Spangled Banner and I waved so proudly in the breeze. Nobody bothered to sing. They stood up all right as a sort of mild patriotic gesture, but then they talked among themselves about the game or about the weather. But they didn’t sing. I felt hurt.

Is it a sin to be patriotic? Have you forgotten what I stand for and where I’ve been? - Anzio, Guadalcanal, Korea, and Vietnam? Take a look at the memorial honor rolls sometime of those who never ame back to keep this republic free . . . One Nation Under God . . . When you salute me, you are actually saluting them.

I may not be coming down your street for a long time. It seems that patriotic parades are a thing of the past. But when I do . . . won’t you do me a favor? Stand up straight, place your right hand over your heart . . . and if they play the Star-Spangled Banner, sing out loud and clear . . . and I’ll salute you by waving back.

Show me that you remember . . . Treat me with respect Be proud to be an American . . . “Land of the Free and The Home of the Brave . . .”

District Two Camp set for July 18 to 21

Dear District Two Campers “Christmas in July.” Not only are the stores thinking about Christmas at this time of the year, so are our District Two campers. Beginning on Thursday, July 18 through Monday, July 21, SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm will have the magical theme of “Christmas in July” with Christmas lights, Christmas trees, presents, and who knows, maybe even Santa Claus himself. The time is almost here, so remember to be at the best behavior if you want “Jolly Old Saint Nick” to visit you at Cooper Farm. I feel as if I have already been visited by Santa. He is promising me a gift at camp that I have looked forward to for many years, and each of you campers had something to do with that gift. One hundred District Two campers—yes, 100!—have signed up to be at our camp this year. And this does not include chaperones and staff. What a gift! Cristy, Amber, and I are so excited. But on the other hand, saddened that our District Four friends will not be joining us this year. District Four - we will miss you all! We ask that you do not arrive any earlier than 9:45 a.m. for the 10 a.m. check in. We as DYCs will arrive at the camp around 9 a.m. and need time to get registration together. I ask that anyone arriving later than 10:15 a.m. give me a call. We want to make registration run as smoothly as possible. All medications, over the counter included, must be turned in to Nurse

Becky. All medication must be in the original bottle with only the amount of medication needed for the camping period. Medication in bags will not be accepted. After you register, you will put your belongings on the pavilion in the designated cabin area which will be marked. All campers and LITs, please wear your swimsuit, along with a cover-up and bring a towel. As soon as you have been registered and your belongings are in place, you will be given your swim test. Everyone must have a swim test. Once you have completed the swim test, please wait under the pavilion for instructions on going to the cabins.

** Parents are required to take home with them all cell phones, (extra ones also), SIM cards, and any electronic devices which include iPODS, Nintendo DS, and MP3 players. This is for all campers and LITs. If a camper has any of the above, parents may receive a phone call. Please do not bring any expensive clothing. SPJST will not be responsible for any lost or damaged items. All cameras must be marked and turned in to the chaperone. No food or drinks allowed in the cabins. We will and have always had plenty. Now, we are all registered, the swim test behind us, and we are ready to begin SPJST District Two Camp 2014. Here are just some activities that are planned:

Decorating for Christmas (Let’s see which cabin wins “Best Decorated”) Swimming Blobbing at the pond BB Guns/Rifle Range/Archery Horseshoes/Volleyball Boating/tubing at the lake

r Flashlight r Bag for dirty clothes

A suggestion made which chaperones really like for the younger campers: Place one day of clothing in a marked, plastic bag. This helps in getting ready in the early morning. Try to mark all clothing and belongings to be sure it comes home. The only other thing I can think of to bring is a lot of energy and a great attitude for a lot of fun. One thing to hope for is enough time to do all the activities which are planned. We promise 2014 SPJST Camp will be rewarding for each of you.

Directions to Cooper Farm SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm is located in the community of Waldeck, Texas, near Ledbetter - just outside of Giddings. The exact address is 2001 Waldeck Road, Ledbetter, Texas 78946. The phone number for Cooper Farm is (979) 249-5674. If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call or email me. Parents, thank you for allowing us to spend quality time with your youth. Every SPJST youth is special in his or her own way, and many memories are made each year at camp and this year will be no exception. A big thank you to all the chaperones who are taking time away from home and work to make sure our campers have a safe and a fun experience. We can’t wait to see you on at camp on July 18. We look forward to having participation from all 11 youth clubs in District Two. See you soon! Love, Patsy, Cristy, and Amber District Two Youth Counselor and Assistants —SPJST—

Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club reports on July meeting

SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club met Saturday, July 5, 2014. The roll call of officers showed that the President Brandon Teplicek, Vice President Cammi Teplicek, Secretary Sutton Schwertner, and Treasurer Hunter Teplicek were present. The roll call showed there 14 members present along with four parents and Youth Leader Beverly Teplicek. After completing Vestnik projects, the meeting began. Morgann Wood made a motion that the youth club give a travel allowance to each family traveling to State YAD in Temple on August 2. This motion was seconded by Hunter Wood. After the meeting adjourned, the youth club sold breakfast burritos on the town square to the various cookers that had come to the annual Lions Club “Meet You at the Square Cookoff.” The older youth club members, Morgann Wood, Brandon Teplicek, Cammi Teplicek, Sarah Booher, Hunter Teplicek, and Hutson Teplicek also sold raffle chances for Rowena Lions Club. Several of our younger members participated in the Kids’ Parade, sponsored by Rowena VFW. They did a super job of decorating their bicycles and painting their faces! It was a fun day, and finished off with fireworks after sunset. Thank you to parents Jason and Nicole Schwertner for making all of the burritos. They were delicious, as we did not have any left over. What a great fundraiser for our group. Without the support of our parents, our youth club will not continue to succeed!
