e have a correction to last week’s column regarding the Corpus Christi getaway coming up on August 8 to 10. The law for handsfree only cell phone usage went into effect in November 2013 for drivers in Corpus. There are no warnings and bright orange flyers. If you are caught talking and/or texting while driving within the Corpus Christi City Limits - beware - you may be issued a ticket. Hands-free only cell phone usage is permitted. Thanks to Lodge 79 President Mark Rebecek for clarifying this information.

Buyer appreciates cookbook
Could you please thank whomever put together that cookbook? I have gotten so much good out of it, that it now holds first position on the cookbook rack. I have been remiss in not contacting you sooner. My dad moved to Texas in the early 2000s. We would go down once or twice a year to see him. We live in Iowa, so it was a three-day, three-night trip one way. No interstates for us . . . especially not in Texas—too much scenery to see—instead of zooming through. We both took early retirement so we had the time to take different routes and sometimes do a craft show whole going or returning, as our hobby is crafting. On one of those trips in the early 2000s, we stopped, I believe it was in Schulenburg for lunch. It is the restaurant by the interstate and has been there for ages. It has a gift shop. That is where I got the SPJST cookbook. A side note: before I took early retirement, I worked for Modern Wood-
men of America in the Fraternal Department in the Home Office in Rock Island, Illinois. I also served on the National Fraternal Council Board in Illinois where I met some very nice people. Again, thanks to all who contributed to the book. It is a gift that keeps on giving. Rita Johnson LeClaire, Iowa —SPJST—

Members expresses scholarship appreciation
To Whom It May Concern, I wish to go to college to further my knowledge and develop for myself a bright and outstanding future for myself in my future endeavors. I plan to attend either Texas State University or Sam Houston State University and major in behavioral science. I wish to become a supervisor special agent for the FBI. This scholarship will greatly help me obtain all the knowledge and information that I will need to become an FBI agent and to protect this nation from bomb threats, mass suicides, homicides, and serial killers. College to me is the way to become whomever you wish to be. It is the way to learn from professors what your strengths and weaknesses are. It also is a place where you decide your

own fate. With hard work and perseverance, you can do anything you set your mind to. You can be lazy and put off your classes, or you can go out there and study hard, listen intently to what is being taught, and succeed far beyond anything you ever thought yourself able to achieve. Personally, I don’t want to be the run of the mill, average, ordinary student. I wish to work hard and achieve all that I possibly can. I will not stop trying to learn all that can be taught to me until there is no more for me to learn, and then to pass my experience and information to another person with the same desire to learn and succeed as I had. This scholarship is an enormous help for me to afford, and be allowed the privilege of learning from these great professors all that I can at one of these renowned colleges. Thank you very much, and have a blessed day. Sincerely, Matthew Bellanger Lodge 97, Placedo —SPJST—
Reader enjoys Lidice article
Dear Vestnik/Melanie: The recent articles on the two communities that were monstrously destroyed by the Nazis were excellent reminders of the horrors of war and the need for understanding in our cultures. Thank you! The Lidice article mentioned the sculpture of the children but did not show it. I attach pictures taken at the Lidice Memorial and Museum of that sculpture. The first shows the sculpture as a whole and the next two are closer. Also, there is a picture of the part of the memorial from the Soviets. Our 2013 speaker Charles Heller (author of “Prague My Long Journey Home”) who spoke at the SPJST Home Office is at the right in that picture. Thanks, Bart Childs Lodge 39, Bryan —SPJST—

The July meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order at 5:06 p.m. by President Doug Williams. Sandie Fischer led us in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence in memory of our past members. We especially want to remember our dedicated, longtime member Hilda Burtis. Our meetings will never be the same without her in attendance. All officers were present for the meeting. It was so good to have A.W. and Lamerle Zajicek back with us and are so thankful he is feeling much better. President Williams greeted everyone and thanked all for coming. Burtis, friends and family gathered at our SPJST lodge hall for visitation and enjoyed a delicious meal. At the monthly SPJST meeting, memorials were recorded and accounted for. We are waiting for the late contributions that have been pledged and at that time, we will have a complete listing of the total memorials. We thank everyone who contributed. In old business, we are going to start taking bids on repairing our roof on the lodge building. If anyone knows of anyone who might be interested, please pass the word around. In new business, the tile floor in the kitchen area is in bad shape. Brittany Wyatt is getting us a price to have it replaced. We discussed lodge rentals. The rates have not increased, but our expenses have. Paper products have gotten so expensive, and so many rolls are used at each event. The hall rental contract is going to have to be reviewed and revised. Vice President A.W. Zajicek reminded us of the Corpus Christi Getaway set for August 10 to 12. Those who have gone in previous years say it is a lot of fun and is a great chance for a great vacation. Richard Ruzicka made the motion to adjourn, seconded by Lamerle Zajicek. Everyone was in favor.

[People’s Choice was originally slated for the April 5 country/western dance, but cancelled. Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ray Nelson was absent for the FAC report. President Meyer stated he did not receive any FAC information from the Home Office and referred members to look in the Vestnik. Youth Leader Joyce Nelson gave the youth club report. She also gave the youth club’s financial report and stated that the youth are still stuffing eggs for the egg hunt, which will be at 10:30 a.m. on April 19. If it rains, the egg hunt will be held indoors. The youth are also starting on ideas and projects for District Two Youth Achievement Day. Trustee Secretary F.L. Meyer gave the trustee report. The trustees were to

The trustees rescheduled to meet on Wednesday to draw up a contract and clarify use of the grounds and building. F.L. stated that on Monday, Joyce came up to the hall and the front door was unlocked. F.L. stated that Joyce brought up that mileage needs to be reviewed to be approved by the lodge secretary/treasurer, not the trustee secretary. F.L. stated that the boards have been measured out for the front, but there is no price yet. Secretary/Treasurer Charles Wilson gave the March bar report. Delilah Wilson gave the ticket report for March. There were back-to-back dances toward the beginning of the month, Pure Country and Fritz Hodde. President David Meyer gave the house report. A moment of silence was observed for the deceased of the lodge and our service men and women. There were 12 lodge members in attendance. Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ray Nelson was absent. Artie Monson, cochair of the dance committee, was also absent. Secretary/Treasurer Charles Wilson read the minutes from the last meeting. Wilson shared that last month’s general fund balances would need to be corrected due to an $0.11 discrep-

rently booking country and western bands for 2015, and is listening to the bands’ music. Since Artie was absent, David shared that she is also starting to book polka and waltz bands for 2015. Evelyn Gustafson reported that the lodge received a thank you card from the Helgren family. She sent sympathy cards to Dale Kessel, Gilbert Kubicek, and Charles Wilson. She also sent a get well card to Andrew Blaschke, who had a heart valve replacement. Charles Wilson thanked the lodge for the flowers sent for his mother. The audit committee then reported. Irene Vrabel reported that she has not heard back from Roy Vajdak (Financial Secretary) at the Home Office about auditing our books. President Meyer stated the he had sent an actual letter to the Home Office requesting an audit, but has also not heard back. He will be sending another letter. President Meyer also reported on the rules and regulations committee, which had scheduled to meet on April 17 at 2 p.m., but later made a slight change of the meeting time to accommodate committee member Irene Vrabel. President David Meyer led into old business. There was no old business. President David Meyer then led into new business. F.L. Meyer reiterated from his trustee report that Joyce had brought up to the trustees for mileage approval to be re-evaluated. Delilah Wilson asked who currently signs off on mileage, which is the trustee secretary (F.L. Meyer), and why it needed to be changed. Joyce stated that it was not a trustee issue, as the trustees’ responsibilities are for the maintenance of the grounds and building only, and that mileage has nothing to do with the grounds or building, and is therefore outside of the trustees’ jurisdiction. Charlie cited the trustee minutes she recorded that Vice President/FAC Ray Nelson, who is a trustee, brought up that in the event there is a question of mileage and its benefit to the hall, then it should be referred to the trustees for review and approval. Delilah Wilson asked why we pay out mileage. Delilah stated that it is something that can be changed. President David Meyer said that the mileage form does say “trustee secretary.” Delilah Wilson stated that to run the hall requires money, and that our lodge needs to cut back on spending. She then asked for the number of rentals for the remainder of the calendar year. President David Meyer could not give

a definite number, stating at least two per month (for a total of 16, minimum). Delilah stated that the polkawaltz dances are not making money for the hall. President David Meyer then moved the business along to the scholarship committee, and asked for volunteers. President David Meyer stated that the youth leader needed to be on the committee. Irene Vrabel stated that we needed to have a school representative on the committee. Diane Cannon, who is a member and works at the high school, has always handled the applications at the school, made arrangements for the announcement of the local SPJST scholarships, and can answer questions about the applications but does not serve on the scholarship committee in an official capacity. Irene Vrabel then began soliciting members to serve on the committee. Youth Leader Joyce Nelson accepted. Charlie Anderson volunteered to serve on the committee, stating that she had been through the scholarship process and received the scholarship in 2007, but was told she could not serve due to potential conflict of interest. President David Meyer continued to ask for
volunteers. Teresa Anderson declined, also due to a potential conflict of interest. Irene suggested Artie Monson as a possible candidate, who later accepted to serve on the scholarship committee. Evelyn Gustafson was the final person to complete the scholarship committee. The scholarship committee is made up of Youth Leader Joyce Nelson, Artie Monson (dance committee), and Evelyn Gustafson (correspondence committee). Charles Wilson then stated that only one youth club member was an eligible scholarship recipient: Cody Helgren, grandson of the late Irene Helgren. Joyce stated that JB Anderson, who was present at the meeting and whose birthday was celebrated just the previous month, was an eligible youth club member – and an active one at that. Joyce stated that the lodge had approved within the past few years that an active youth club member would automatically be eligible to receive the local scholarship as an incentive for youth to continue through the program, and the youth scholarship amount was changed to $1,000. However, Irene reiterated that $1,000 was approved for a youth member,
and a non-member would receive $500. There were no birthdays celebrated. Waldine Wieruscheske stated that she and her husband would celebrate their 65th anniversary, but she only got 61 years with him. Joyce stated she had raffle tickets for the 2014 SPJST Car Show in Temple on May 3. All money collected would be turned over to Melanie at the Easter egg hunt. **After the scholarship selection, it was determined that Cody Helgren was in fact not an SPJST member. His name has never appeared on the youth club roster and there was no record on file with the Home Office of his certificate, and his mother stated that he never had an SPJST certificate and was not an SPJST member. nik. Youth Leader Joyce Nelson stated that members needed to start getting their hours together in preparation for the mid-year FAC report. Youth Leader Joyce Nelson gave the youth club report. She gave the youth club’s financial report and stated that the annual egg hunt, which also doubles as a membership drive, brought in 101 registrants. They provided contact information as potential new members. Home Office representatives kicked off the egg hunt with an indoor presentation about SPJST, with former youth club members Mary Flores-Laws, Mechelle Flores-West, and Charlie Anderson speaking about various aspects of the youth program. Each child present received a door prize. The Home Office also brought the float, decorated with the Smurfs, and a raffle was held after the egg hunt. Joyce also stated that on May 3, the youth participated in Join Hands Day.
They received $100 from the Home Office and raised enough money to give the Elgin and McDade food pantries $150 each, in addition to food staples. Irene Vrabel started off the soda tab donations. During Join Hands Day, there were two individuals who offered to contribute their tabs, and one stated that every 1,000 tabs will pay for one treatment at Ronald McDonald House. Joyce reported on the scholarships. The scholarship committee met on April 27, but applications listed the cut-off date as April 30, so they met again after the deadline on May 5 in order to submit the names of recipients to Elgin High School for the awards ceremonies. There were 16 applicants, and the scholarship committee determined to give three $500 scholarships out to Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Club member JB Anderson and non-members Cody Helgren and Lorena Alanis. Trustee Secretary F.L. Meyer gave
the trustee report. The trustees met with the motorcycle club and squared away the instructor’s needs and the lodge’s needs. Ray Nelson took charge of calling Bobby Wuensche about the barbecue pit bricks. The security company is requesting a $3 per hour raise per officer to cover gas expenses. Currently security is paid $200 per night, and the requested raise would total $260 per night. There were some prices for the boards, but not for the needed plastic molding for small renovations at the hall. Secretary/Treasurer Charles Wilson gave the April bar report. Delilah Wilson gave the ticket report for April. President David Meyer gave the house report and the dance committee report. He stated that there are country bands calling, and he is listening to music. Artie Monson stated she has not booked any polka/waltz bands for 2015. Evelyn Gustafson reported that she

sent a get well card to Cassie Craig and sympathy cards to Katie Mogonye and Bessie McCaffey. Irene Vrabel gave the audit committee report and stated that there was still no word, and that many lodges are requesting books to be checked so we have been placed on a waiting list. She did say that it was suggested that the lodge retain a CPA, but that would be an out-of-pocket expense on our end. Reporter Charlie Anderson suggested that we take that route and hire a CPA to audit the books, as the year is already halfway over and according to the rules and regulations, this should have been completed in January. President David Meyer said to give it some more time. Scholarship recipients JB Anderson and Lorena Alanis were present to be acknowledged before the lodge, and photos were taken. The third scholarship recipient, Cody Helgren, was still at the high school awards ceremony.

It was stated that he typically makes several trips each week to Austin for bar snack foods. The motion passed by a vote of 14 to 6. However, the bar chairman then declined the $250 monthly stipend and stated he only wanted reimbursement for mileage because it varies depending on rentals and dances. In Memoriam
Expression of Sympathy
We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge 15, Buckholts, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, HILDA ANNA KUZEL BURTIS, of Buckholts, Texas, who passed away on July 6, 2014, in a Temple hospital at the age of 98. Services were held at the MarekBurns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron. Burial was in Corinth Cemetery near Buckholts. Visitation was Hilda Burtis held at Marek Burns-Laywell Funeral Home on Friday, July 11, and the funeral service was held on Saturday, July 12. She was born in Corinth to John Thomas and Annie Mikulas Kuzel. She married John Burtis in 1934. She worked as a homemaker and a farmer. She was a lifetime member of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982. Survivors include daughters Mary Irene Weatherford and Marguerite Vogel; sisters Lorene Kuzel Millian and Irene Kuzel Rollins; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Hilda lived her entire life in the Corinth area until a few months before her death. Her two daughters devoted a great portion of their lives to support Hilda that enabled her to continue to live on the Burtis Farm until a few months before her death. They traveled a long distance from Dallas most every weekend to check on her and assist her in what needed to be done. Although Hilda did not attend college, she was a prolific reader and scholar about history and in particular, about her Czech heritage. She was a walking history book! If anyone needed information about some past event, they would call on Hilda, for she had a wonderful memory of things that took place during her lifetime. Hilda was a brilliant writer and storyteller. Her write-ups that were published in the Věstník and in the newspaper were always so interesting. She was very dedicated to politics
her entire life including serving as precinct chair and election judge for years. In 2008, she was recognized by the 20,000 attendees at the Democratic State Convention as a delegate for over 50 years and in 1996, Hilda was the second oldest delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Hilda grew up speaking and writing in Czech and was very proud of her Czech roots. During World War II, she adopted the Verner family in Prague to bind the family generations between Texas and the Czech Republic. She visited this family five times since 1990. Hilda’s family donated the land for the Corinth Cemetery in 1880. She was a board member and leader, serving as treasurer until a few months before her death. Hilda was always known for her always being dressed with great regal style including designer dresses, very high heels, and always donning a stylish hat. Hats were displayed along with her beautiful flowers at her funeral service. It is always amazing to me that she worked so hard on the farm doing dirty farm work, yet when she went anywhere, she was dressed to perfection as if she was dressed for a fashion show. She will certainly be missed by her many friends and family. She attended our SPJST meetings regularly; she was very devoted to SPJST. May our departed sister rest in eternal peace. Services were held in Corinth Cemetery near Buckholts with the Reverend Gary Kleypas officiating. She was preceded in death by her husband Chick Folschinsky; and son John Wayne Folschinsky. On occasion – as Supreme Lodge President – I have the solemn honor to express condolences on behalf of our fraternal order when we lose a dear and esteemed member of SPJST. That is especially true this morning as we have all been deeply touched by the passing of SisRuth Krizan ter Ruth Krizan. On behalf of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, we celebrate Sister Ruth’s life and her legacy of fraternalism. As we mourn our loss, our thoughts and prayers are with those who were closest to her: her children Jeanette and Johnnie; grandchildren Matthew and Leslie; greatgrandchildren Lucas and Avery; and all of their families. Our condolences also go out to Sister Ruth’s many nieces and nephews and the wider family of SPJST brothers and sisters whose sorrow and sense of loss we share today. Every one of us here today has been touched by Sister Ruth’s passing. She touched each of us in some special way during her long and dutiful life. A spiritual life – during which she devoted a great deal of her time in an earnest effort to lessen the hardships and brighten the lives of those closest to her. I had a wonderful visit and great conversation with Sister Ruth – just about three years ago – at the Krizan Family Reunion held at the SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood hall. The underlying mission of that conversation then was that I was working on a feature article about Sister Ruth for the Vestnik – SPJST’s weekly newspaper. She had just recently celebrated her 96th birthday. In SPJST, we refer to that as “The Grand Age of 96.” Within SPJST, achieving the “Grand Age of 96” represents a timehonored longevity plateau. In Sister Ruth’s case, it also provided SPJST with the opportunity to thank her for a lifetime of commitment

to the high ideals of fraternalism – of doing for others and of doing for the community. In visiting with Sister Ruth and the family, I learned a lot about her early days of growing up in the Liberty Grove Community. For instance, in those days, just about everyone in Liberty Grove community raised cotton and corn, had big gardens, fruit trees, livestock, and chickens to provide food for their families year round. Root cellars were good for keeping things like potatoes, turnips and other produce good through the winter. Canning was also a big thing for preserving vegetables and meats. A lot of us here this morning can probably relate to that! As the youngest daughter, Sister Ruth was exempt from a lot of the field work that needed to be done on the Mechell farm. Instead, she worked close beside her mother in the kitchen and tended to chores around the house. A little more about growing up in the Mechell family: In addition to raising livestock and chickens, Sister Ruth’s brothers hunted squirrels, rabbits and other small game. They also caught fish in the nearby creeks. Thanks to these plentiful wild food resources and their own ability to raise a variety of produce and livestock, the Mechell family didn’t feel the Great Depression quite so badly as those who lived in the cities. As in most families of the day, there wasn’t a lot of cash to go around; however, one thing that was in plentiful supply was music! This was very fortunate for Sister Ruth as one of her favorite pastimes growing up was going to the local dances. It was while attending one of these dances in the town of Leroy, that a young farmer named John Rudolph Krizan from the Cottonwood community asked Ruth to dance. “I didn’t know the boy,” I remember Ruth saying to me. She went on to say that she didn’t turn him down because she didn’t want to make him feel bad, . . . so they danced! One dance lead to another and before long – in October of 1938 – Sister Ruth and Brother John Krizan were married. They took up farming in the Axtell Community. A son, John “Johnnie” Rudolph, Jr. was born in 1947. Four years later, they had a daughter, Jeanette. It was just after Jeanette was born that Ruth and John began taking an active role in the affairs of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood, where John’s grandfather, Josef Krizan, was a charter member . . . I’m sure you can see where this is

leading: In the coming years, SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood enjoyed tremendous growth under the leadership of Brother John Krizan as president and Sister Ruth Krizan as youth leader. In compiling Sister Ruth’s story, I also had the opportunity to visit with Jeanette and Johnnie, who had many fond recollections of those days. Jeanette recalled how she – along with her father, mother, and brother – participated in all of the activities of the lodge. In fact, it became something of a second home. In addition to all of the routine lodge activities, there were many special events along the way: Preparing floats for parades and making preparations for theme dances for Halloween, Valentine’s, and other special occasions. This list goes on and on: District meetings, annual picnics, youth activity days . . . In later years after the hall was enlarged, Jeanette and Johnnie were active in the Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club. Their mom – Sister Ruth – served as the youth club leader – an obligation she took on with great zeal. On every special occasion – Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas – she would have the youth club members memorizing poems and performing in skits for programs for the lodge members. A lot of the Krizan family’s good times revolved around the lodge and SPJST. When Sister Ruth’s husband John died suddenly in 1964, she picked up the slack in a determined and resolute fashion. In addition to running the household, Ruth took on the chore of running the farm – and eventually purchasing another in Penelope. Brother Johnnie remembers working side-byside with his mom out in the field picking cotton . . . and whatever else needed to be done. Sister Ruth valued her family. To her, family was everything. She would sacrifice anything for her family. “Mom was very resourceful. No doubt about that,” Johnnie has shared with me, adding that he took a lot of pride in the shirts that she made for him out of the empty feed sacks. In spite of the changes that the family had to endure, the Krizan family maintained an active presence in the local lodge with Sister Ruth taking on the added responsibility of becoming an SPJST sales representative. On that point, I must add, Sister Ruth is directly responsible for multiple generations of families being members of the SPJST. An auto accident in 1977 resulted in weeks of intensive care and conva-
lescence for Ruth. In time, she rebounded and picked up with her lodge work right where she had left off. She continued to support the lodge in its various activities and events and remained a regular worker at the lodge’s sausage and sauerkraut booth at Westfest. I remember Sister Ruth saying to me in her soft-spoken, and determined voice, “We’re just doing what needs to be done. We just do all we can.” In a little more than two weeks – on July 1, the SPJST will observe its 117th anniversary. The same can be said for SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood – one of SPJST’s 25 charter lodges and still going strong thanks in large part to Sister Ruth. It is through sacrifice that God develops our character and uses us to impact others’ lives for Him. This biblical value – and this fraternal value – of service to others with joy and humility – is passed on to Jeanette and Johnnie; Matthew and Leslie; and Lucas and Avery. And let’s not stop there. That legacy of dutiful service passes on to each and every one of us. I can think of no greater tribute to Sister Ruth than for each of us – in his or her own way – than to keep alive the idea of giving, of sharing, and of fraternalism – within SPJST, through our families, through our churches and communities, and through our daily interactions with each other. There is a passage that I would like to conclude with which is found in our old SPJST ritual book. It’s a passage that addresses the passing of an esteemed member of our fraternal order:
The final gavel has been sounded by the Supreme Architect and the curtains of fraternal love and fellowship have been drawn together on the life of our departed sister . . . Those of us who were close to Sister Ruth and came in contact with her frequently know that she spent a great deal of her time in an earnest effort to lessen the hardships, sufferings and various problems of the members of her immediate family, as well as of her fellow members in our Order, and of all her fellow men. She exemplified the beauty of true fraternity and fulfilled the obligations and promises that she took at the time when she was admitted as a member. She lived and served according to the instructions and teachings she received in our Order on Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood. May honor be given to Sister Ruth’s memory now and forever. —SPJST—

District Four reports on YAD
We are so excited to report on District Four Youth Achievement Day. Registration began at 10 a.m. We had a total of 52 entries. Thirteen youths entered in this year’s completion. The only category not having an entry was group talent. All of the youth did a wonderful job on their crafts. They really came up with some original ideas particularly in the constructed items. 2013 District Four Queen Ana Fuentes gave the invocation before lunch was served. While most everyone was enjoying lunch, the judges were deliberating on the various craft entries.
District Four Flag Bearers Sutton Schwertner of Lodge 49, Rowena and Addee Williams of Lodge 215, South Plains posted the colors. Queen Ana Fuentes and Duchess Grace Schwertner led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, Texas Pledge, and the SPJST Youth Motto.
