Editor’s Note

VӖSTNÍK

Best Wishes, Youth! Wrapping up this week’s Vestnik has been quite a challenge. We

learned of the very tragic, unfortunate passing of our beloved District Three Director Johnnie R. Krizan of West. It was hard to focus on anything except the tragedy, the memories, and the constant thoughts of his sister Jeanette and all of the Krizan family members. It was just on June 16 that Johnnie’s and Jeanette’s mother Ruth Krizan passed away. Funeral services were set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 29 at West Brethren Church. We will include a special tribute to Brother Krizan in next week’s Vestnik. In the meantime, we hold Johnnie’s family and friends close in thought and prayer as they mourn Johnnie’s passing and seek comfort.

District Three Director’s Position Delegates in district caucuses elect an alternate director at each convention. At the 2012 SPJST Convention, District Three delegates elected John Engelke of Lodge 66, Waco. As a result of Director Krizan’s passing, Brother John Engelke will now assume the duties of District Three Director and complete Brother Krizan’s term through the 2016 Convention. John can be contacted at (254) 799-4247 or by email at john.engelke@hotmail.com. Best wishes to Brother John in this position.

Supreme Lodge Vice President’s Position Applications for the position of Supreme Lodge Vice President were reviewed at the Supreme Lodge meeting held July 15 to 17 at the Home Office in Temple. The position was vacated after Gene McBride retired on March 28. Interviews are being scheduled and

will take place at the Supreme Lodge strategic planning session that will be held in September. In the meantime, Cynthia Hutka remains Interim Vice President. If you have questions or need any information about the Insurance Department, please feel free to contact Sister Cynthia.

State YAD this Saturday Youth participants and adult supporters will gather in Temple this Saturday, August 2 for State Youth Achievement Day. Best wishes to our youth members for a fantastic day of friendly competition. Congratulations to all participants for making it to State YAD. Meet the State King and State Queen contestants on pages 12 and 13 of this week’s Vestnik. Keep in mind that there is road construction on I-35 by the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. Members driving northbound will take exit 303B - Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. Members driving southbound will take exit 304 - North H.K. Dodgen Loop and cross over the interstate then take a right onto the access road (two-way traffic) and drive south to the entrance of the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center.

Finally, Special Funds Treasurer Tom Stavinoha read his report, and it also was approved as read. Under old business, we thanked Bradley Stavinoha for the hot dog lunch. Also, Tom Stavinoha mentioned our SPJST sign in the front parking lot. It needs a makeover soon. Members voted to allow him to use his judgment to check with sign companies so this project can be underway. Under new business, we voted in new members Amy Schultz, Desiree Villaloboz, and Jessica Villaloboz. We hope to meet you all soon. We also presented scholarship recipient Marina Midgett with a check. Congratulations, Marina! Also, under new business, Tom Stavinoha made a motion to purchase an auction item for the Needville Volunteer Fire Department Fundraiser next month. It was voted

on that he will make the purchase. Finally, Bradley Stavinoha asked for some money so that he could open a youth account at the bank. It was approved to give him $50 to do so. Our door prize winners were Dorothy Blinka, Willie Mae Kuykendall, Emma Kujawa, and Ed Kuban. Congratulations to the lucky winners.

Next Meeting—August 17 For the next meeting on August 17, Bradley Stavinoha suggested buying barbecue from the Needville Fire Department Fundraiser. He said that he will make the purchase. Members, bring along your favorite side dishes and desserts. See you at the next meeting! Fraternally, Jeanette Newman, Reporter —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, July 10, 2014, in the Sokol dining room. We didn’t quilt. We had an elephant sale and show-and-tell, meeting, prize drawing, 50-50 dollar game, and a delicious lunch. As we weren’t quilting, we didn’t meet as early as usual. Dorothy J. Kudrna, Ann Clagett, Martha Ritchey, and I arrived around 9 a.m. to start getting everything ready to go. Dorothy J. had many items for the elephant sale from her late sister-in-law Dorothy M. Kudrna’s estate sale. Everyone started arriving and displaying their sale items

and show-and-tell items. We had to add more tables; we had so many things for sale. By 11 a.m. - the time the sale was to start - we had 22 members present. President Irene with her gavel started the sale. We had lots of good things. I wound up with two bags full. Almost everything sold. We really did well money-wise. Thank you, everyone, for making it such a success. At 12 noon, President Irene led us in the blessing, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you, everyone, for the wonderful food, the set up and clean up, and to Libbie for taking out the trash. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order, the Pledge of Allegiance and “Our Father” was recited by all. A moment of silence was held for Cordell Hickman and Jasper Cline. Secretary Dolores Vrana read the minutes of the last meeting, and Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek gave her report; both were approved as read. As Ginny Svehlak was not present (her husband Edwin had eye surgery in Dallas), Irene read a couple of humorous stories for her. Sunshine Lady Eleanora Pelzel

read the July birthday celebrants Dorothy Valek, Victoria Vlk, Dorothy Bobalek, Joan Strunc, and Barbara Phipps. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Victoria and Dorothy. We hope the others have a great day. Eleanora had a card for all to sign for Barbara Phipps. She had foot surgery. We hope all is going well. A sympathy card was signed for Vickie Kohn who lost her sister Georgia Honza. Pat Fowler announced in August, we will quilt the Sewing Circle Friendship Christmas quilt - Lil had all the squares sewn together, and it really is pretty. Everyone wants to win it. In September, we will quilt for Irene, and in October, we will quilt for Dolores. A thank you card is being sent to Lori Macalik for the bingo basket and numbers that she donated to our Circle. Some members are anxious to play. The kitchen committee said we will be needing dinner plates. Dorothy Prachyl volunteered to bring some next month. We will continue to noodle-swap. A block-of-the-month square is being discussed. We were happy to have special people at the meeting who we don’t always get to see - Bessie Laznovsky, Kay Lynn Kovar, Marie Vrla, and Ann Zabojnik. Bessie Laznovsky brought a quilting chair for our sale. The chair originally belonged to Rosie Zazvorka, who was one of the first members of the Circle. We didn’t have many members bring show-and-tell items, but the ones who did, we all enjoyed so much. Dorothy J. Kudrna was first. She had a beautiful quilt that was made by her husband Louis’ mother. The quilt had a beautiful star pattern and was at least 60 years old. She had several noodle quilts that she has already quilted, and some tops, noodle tops that are ready for quilting. Kay Lynn Kovar showed two bonnets that were made by her dear friend, my longtime-ago-neighbor-acrossthe-street Katie Omelina. They were special. Kay Lynn even modeled one. Irene Prachyl had a rack full of rosaries, about 12, all from different countries. Her daughter Cheryl Blumberg has given them to her. She actually has about 30 rosaries from different countries. The rosaries were so pretty. I have written about Cheryl in the past. They are here now visiting from Turkey. them. She also had an album of the quilts she has made for herself, her sons, and her grandchildren. I didn’t get the number, but they were all really beautiful. She has two greatgranddaughters now. I’m sure she will make one for them. Libbie Vrla brought a large oval picture of our Grandma and Grandpa Patril’s wedding. She also showed a picture that was given to her by Joyce Ehrenberger recently when they moved to North Carolina. This picture was from the 1938 International Sokol Slet in Prague, given to Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger by their teacher of a Czech class they had attended while in the Czech Republic. Joe was telling her they are Sokols and the teacher Hana Kucera’s mother was a Sokol gymnast. Any way, the teacher gave them this picture and as Joyce was downsizing, she gave it to Libbie. It was very pretty. Dorothy Prachyl had a beautiful picture of her mother from 1928 dressed in her formal attire attending her graduation banquet. She was a beautiful lady. Dolores Vrana had a picture and write up about her dad Mr. Lednicky, who was born in 1895. He was in the Navy - World War I from 1917 to 1919. She also had a flag given to them when he passed away. The flag has only 48 stars. Dolores was only five when he passed away. This was a beautiful story. I brought three Blessed Mother statues that have been given to me. One was given to me by my friend Irma Martinez when I had my mastectomy in 1989; one given to me by my aunt Ann Patril when visiting her in Corsicana before she moved to Gar-

land or Carrollton. She collected Blessed Mothers, and she let me pick one. My granddaughter Calleigh gave me one last Christmas. I love them all. They are so special to me just as the Blessed Mother is special to me. She has helped me through many difficult times. After show-and-tell, we had the raffle drawing. We had many prizes. Dorothy J. was the first winner. She picked a baby quilt that she donated; the top was made by her sister. Dorothy wanted to win it, and she did. We had so many prizes, I didn’t get names as so many won. I won a carved wooden Jesus, Mary, and Joseph statue from Bethlehem donated by Joyce Ehrenberger. Marie Vrla was the 50-50 dollar winner. Next month, Irene Prachyl and Dorothy J. will bring quilts for show. President Irene thanked all for coming, for all the sale items, the showand-tell items, the food, and for making this day so special. It was truly great. She reminded everyone that the next meeting will be August 14. We will quilt, have lunch, and it will be a regular meeting. We hope everyone can make it. Dorothy Prachyl made a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Georgia Holy. Last but not least, I want to send a big thank you to Jerry and Chad Wester who volunteered to take down all our tables. We did have many. All of our members were happy that we didn’t have to do it. I have heard Ella Mae Zmolek’s husband Jerry is not feeling well. We hope by now all is well with him. I’m sure I have made many mistakes in this letter, and want to say

Happy Birthday, Amy!

Friendship Club of Fort Worth

The members of the Friendship Club met at St. Thomas Church on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, and carpooled to Golden Corral for our dining out luncheon/social. We had a nice turn out, and of course, everyone ate too much. Most of our members came dressed in red, white, and blue in keeping with July 4. President Sharron Connelly called a short meeting to order. No minutes were read, and no financial report was made. Sharron did look into her magic hat and the found names Stanley and Betty Krenek as our king and queen for the day. King Stanley was presented with a patriotic hat to wear, and Queen Betty was presented with a crown with three small United States flags sticking up. All were very appropriate! “Happy Birthday” was sung to Stanley, our only July birthday celebrant. The next meeting will be on August 6. The theme will be the 1950s and 1960s. Even though it was not announced, our guidelines state that August is a designated month in which we support St. Thomas Food Bank.

News I am sure by now everyone knows that Lydia Alholm fell on July 8 and broke her hip. She is currently at Life Care Center of Haltom, 2936 Markum Drive, Room A-10, Fort Worth, Texas 76117 if anyone would like to send her a card. Her phone number is (817) 222-6647. Get well soon, Lydia; you are missed. Lydia’s grandson Danny from Chicago came the first weekend, daughter-in-law Kathy and grandson Tim are coming next week, then grandson Matt will come later. They are spreading themselves around to give Lydia time to enjoy each of them. We were saddened to learn of the death of Monalee Hattendorf on July 13. She was such a sweet, beautiful lady and will be missed by everyone. Our sympathy goes out to her family. The graveside service was on Thursday, and the Lord blessed Fort Worth with a nice downpour of rain. In spite

of the rain, it was a beautiful service. Brandon Mason, grandson of the late Jeanie Milan Mason, has been in Fort Worth (he lives in New York) and choreographed and directed the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” which played at the Will Rogers Auditorium. It was a great show. The dancing and singing were great, and stage sets were outstanding, too. Prism Theatrics is in a new Fort Worth-based theater arts company, and they intend to present Broadway caliber productions throughout Main Street, USA. Brandon stated the next show in Fort Worth will be a cowboy musical in early 2015. Watch the Star Telegram because if the next show is like the first, it will be a “must see.” The next meeting will be August 6. Don’t forget, this time you must bring a food dish to share. Also, bring nonperishable food items for the St. Thomas Food Bank. See you then. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

It has been a strange several weeks for this writer and as always, I try to record the activities of the Ladies Circle correctly. Hopefully, I’ll get things straight this day. President Marlene Bass called the meeting to order and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which we sang “God Bless America” honoring our country’s birthday. It was inspiring to look out to see and hear the 50 members and guests in their red, white, and blue attire. To add to the festivities, Gloria Farek made tiny, little, flag-inspired, pinwheel pins and mint firecrackers for all. Thanks to Gloria and her helpers, Cherish and Aleesha, for handing them out. President Marlene welcomed new members and guests and had them stand to share a little bit about themselves. Mary Ann Adcock brought Brenda Krivanek Lackey and Ann Cooksey; Jessica Martinez (Charlie’s “sitter”) came with Betty Lloyd and company; Aleesha Barrett was with Grandmother Lorinda Manasco as was Lorinda’s sister Velma Filippone from California; Amber Moore was with Grandmother Theresa Clay; and Cherish was with Garland and Bessie once again. Joyce Tesar came using her cane and was doing great after her hip replacement surgery, Didi Soares was back in her spot after a long illness, as was Josephine Cox after her bad fall a couple of months ago. We were so very inspired and happy to see each and every one of them. It was also announced that Judith Tong-Allcock was having health issues, her husband had a fracture, and her son just got out of the hospital. Goodness - that’s a lot to deal with. Theretta Praslicka was unable to attend due to the funeral for her brother-in-law Dr. Rice. His passing was unexpected and quite shocking for the entire family. We offer our thoughts and prayers to his family for strength during this sad time. The business portion of the meeting proceeded with the reading and approval of the minutes. The financial report was presented by Margaret Laymance, and Sunshine Chairman Margaret sent a card to Mary Windham on the passing of her brother. We were sorry to learn of her loss. Under old business, as a reminder, we will sponsor the cake walk during Czech Heritage Day activities on Sep-

tember 20. All cakes will be homemade so plan to come, have a good time and win a yummy cake. Several items were discussed under new business. All were financial in nature, and for more information, you will need to come to the next Ladies Circle meeting or call one of the officers for details. It was all good though. Also, the group decided to dress in island “garb” for the August meeting. I challenged the ladies to wear swimsuits but was totally booed at that suggestion. Ah-h-h come on now. Mary Ann Albrecht, Sandi Celusniak, Margaret Laymance, Jennifer Miller, Theretta Praslicka, Stanley Krenek, and Cathy Simmank were our July birthday honorees. They were serenaded with the “Happy Birthday” song, and their picture was taken for posterity. President Marlene announced that she and her husband Jim have a wedding anniversary this month, as well as Theretta and Frank Praslicka. Betty Loyd, her reluctant husband, daughter, son-in-law, and another couple celebrated the Loyd’s 41st anniversary with a cruise to Alaska. Betty said it was a “trip of a lifetime,” and they really enjoyed it— even the reluctant husband. Lucy Martinez and her husband just returned from a trip to Las Vegas where they celebrated their 49th anniversary. Congratulations to everyone on so many years of wedded bliss. That’s awesome! Mary Ann Gibson, Lisa Juran, Bessie Ellsworth, and Lisa Ellsworth were in the kitchen along with dishwasher guy Bobby Shropshire. Our thanks went out to them for a wonderful lunch and cleanup. At this point, I need to confess . . . I accused someone of taking my dessert—by mistake, of course. However, that did not turn out to be the case, and my face is still red with embarrassment, and hopefully, my apology was accepted. It really was all in fun. Sherrie Watkins announced that ballroom dancing on Friday nights has been discontinued; however, country/ western dancing is still taking place the first Sunday of each month. She also stated that business has picked up, and the lodge hall is going to be very busy through the end of the year. Ten names for door prizes were called, and so once again, we had some very happy winners. After showand-tell time, yours truly said the blessing for lunch. We had plenty to eat. Bingo followed lunch as usual. We just learned that Lydia Alholm fell, broke her hip, and has had surgery

on it. Our prayers and thoughts go out to her for a full recovery. It is with a heavy heart that we share that Monalee Hattendorf left her earthly body to join her loved ones who were waiting for her in Heaven. We saw her the afternoon of the meeting, and she was still hoping to come back to play bingo in August. She absolutely loved and enjoyed the ladies of the Circle, and she will be missed immensely. She was a true Czech in her heart, a lovely lady in her mannerisms, and a wonderful substitute mother for me. Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

Parish from portions of Natchitoches and Caddo Parishes through Act 88 of the 16th Legislature of Louisiana in 1843. Means and Chrysler reported that “Oftentimes spurred by letters from family and friends that celebrated the fertile soil and salubrious climate of northern Louisiana, South Carolina slaveholders transplanted their way of life to northern DeSoto Parish.” Among these South Carolina slaveholders were Molsie Eliza Durham, the widow of Robert Winfield Durham; and three of her sons Captain Osman L. Durham, Dr. Charlton Hightower Durham, and Lieutenant John Franklin Durham. They came from Fairfield County, South Carolina to DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, and brought their slaves with them. Many of the descendants of these slaves settled near Fairfield, Freestone County, Texas after the Civil War. Many Freestone County men fought at the Battle of Mansfield in DeSoto Parish on April 8, 1864. At Mansfield, the Confederate victory prevented a Union invasion of Texas. The Val Verde Cannon that was used at the Battle of Mansfield found a permanent home in front of the Freestone County Courthouse in Fairfield. In his upcoming fourth book The Durhams of Fairfield: An African American Genealogy, Robert L. Uzzel traced his wife Debra’s roots to the slaves of the family of Robert Win-

field Durham. Evidence indicates that Gobi, the patriarch of the Durham family along with his wife and five older sons were slaves in Fairfield County, and that Goboi died there. His wife gave birth to their youngest son Isaac Durham in 1860 in Freestone County, where his five brothers had settled by 1870. They came with their masters to Louisiana and joined their mother and brother in Texas shortly after emancipation. The six Durham brothers - Belton, Allen, Minor, Christopher, Anderson, and Isaac lived east of Fairfield in the Butler community of Freestone County. In the Butler community, Durham is a common name. Some descendants of those brothers still farm land in the area. Debra Uzzel is a sixth generation descendant of Allen Durham. This author has been to both Fairfield County, South Carolina and DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, conducting extensive research. He is firmly convinced that it was more than coincidental that the Durham started out in Fairfield County, South Carolina and ended up in Fairfield, Texas. Thus, “Fairfield” in the book’s title has a double meaning. The Durhams of Fairfield continue to make their mark. They are now scattered throughout the United States, involved in many businesses and professions and contributing much to their communities and to the world as a whole. There can be no doubt that members of this outstanding family to whom the author is related by marriage will always make their mark. It is his prayer that this book will inspire the present generation and generations to come to do all they can to preserve the Durham legacy. Dr. Uzzel is a pastor, teacher, and author currently based in Ennis, Texas. His previous books include Blind Lemon Jefferson: His Life, His Death, and His Legacy (2002), Prince Hall Freemasonry in the Lone Star State: From Cuney to Curtis, 1875-2003 (2004), and Eliphas Levi and the Kabbalah: The Masonic and French Connection of the American Mystery Tradition (2006). Lodge 25, Ennis youth shares summer activities

Dear Vestnik Readers, Yes, I finally wrote another letter. So, so, so very many people have been requesting that I send in another letter. I intended on writing one a lot sooner, but it seems summer fever has gotten the best of me. So, without further ado, this is what my summer has greatly consisted of. Before I get into my summer fun, I have to tell you about my favorite weekend of the entire year, aside from Westfest, of course. That’s right, I’m telling you about the one and only— National Polka Festival—in my fantastic hometown—Ennis, Texas. As y’all know, I’m always extremely eager to get my kroj on, put on my cowboy boots, and dance the night away. I was planning on telling y’all how much fun it was, but surprisingly it’s quite hard. I can most honestly say, I am unable to find the proper words to explain how much fun I had. I got to help make our cheerleading float the night before. I woke up bright and early the next morning and walked in

the parade as a cheerleader. I got to see a lot of my friends including my SPJST friends. And, best of all, I polka’d the night away. What really made this year special is that the boy of my dreams, Todd, asked for the honor of being my boyfriend. Of course, I willingly said “yes.” This pretty little dancing girl with her tossing curls certainly and most definitely had one of the best times in her life. After that, school ended, and I had absolutely no problem with that because I achieved things I didn’t know I was capable of. Being ranked second in my class is just one of the few things I have accomplished this year. The Monday after school got out, I was off to cheer camp. Cheer camp had its up and downs, but all in all, I had fun being with most of my best friends. I’ll let you in on a little secret . . . I like SPJST camp so much more than cheer camp. Speaking of camp, I attended Leaders-In-Training camp and our District Three camp as well. LIT camp was beyond amounts of fun. I think it might have been the most fun weekend of my life. I got to meet so many tremendous people, and the best part was that there was a dance. I danced so much. I danced to every song that

VӖSTNÍK

night with the exception of two songs. The crazy thing was, I wasn’t crawling out the door at the end. I still had the ability to walk! Don’t get me wrong through, I was definitely feeling it the next couple of days. As far as District Three Camp goes, I had a lot of fun helping out the smaller kids. I loved it when they hugged me and when they have that great big smile on their face. When you look at that smile, it’s the best feeling in the world to know you’re the reason behind it. I hope those kids look up to me and think, “I want to be just like her one day.” Those kids mean the world to me, and I hope that I have an impact on them so I can be a part of their world. As my summer clock ticks away, next comes Youth Achievement Day (YAD). As many of y’all know, it is my life’s dream to be SPJST Queen. I mean, ever since my curious fiveyear-old eyes peered at that stage, I’ve been writing a speech every year to prepare for the years I can run for queen. Like they say, practice makes perfect. I did not win this year, but that’s okay. I planned on winning, and I planned my whole year as SPJST Queen. Well, God looked at my plans and laughed. He already has His plan

VӖSTNÍK

for me, and apparently winning Queen this year wasn’t a part of it. I look at it this way. Good things fall apart so even better things can come together, and I think God is with me on this philosophy. I will never, ever, ever give up. I will run for Queen as long as I’m eligible. I promised myself one day I will wear that crown, and I am on a great mission to achieve my shining meridian. On the bright side, I won first place in individual talent. That’s another thing I’ve been striving to win since I was five. I sang “At Last” by Etta James. I couldn’t believe I won. They went through all the honorable mentions, and I got so happy. They announced third place, then second place, and then I screamed! I knew what that meant. I was the only person who hadn’t been called. Next, I hear, “And first place is April Dvorak.” I was so proud of myself. Also, I won many first, second, and third places. So this year’s YAD was pretty good. The day after YAD, I was off to vacation. We went to Gulf Shores, Alabama, with a few stops along the way. We stayed in a beach house, and everyday we walked to the beach. It was so awesome. I loved it. Oh, and I almost forgot. I turned 14. For my birthday I got a .22 from Daddy; some cute storage things and perfume from my mom; money from my grandma and grandpa; a purse and backpack from my Uncle Tim and Aunt Kimberly; Misty gave me pool toys; and my boyfriend gave me one of his shirts, The Great Gatsby book (I have an obsession with books), and The Great Gatsby movie. My Mima, Pawpaw, Uncle Robert, and Uncle

Michael are getting me something, too, but I haven’t got together with them yet. Also, I’ll have a little birthday party sooner or later. You want to know the best part? My birthday was the last day of camp, so I got to spend half of my birthday with my SPJST family! I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday. As you can conclude, I’ve had an extravagantly superior summer. I’ll try to write another as soon as I can. I love y’all so much for taking time out of y’all’s day to read all about me. You don’t know how much I appreciate it. Thank y’all all so very much. You’re Polka Loving Girl, April Dvorak —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth reports on summertime fun

Greetings, Vestnik Readers! I’m sorry that I haven’t written a letter in a long time. I was too busy doing polka fest, SPJST Youth Achievement Day, vacation, SPJST camp, and much more. First, I want to tell you about the National Polka Festival in Ennis. I had the best time ever. I wore my Czech costume, and I rode on the SPJST Float. The float got fourth place. After that, we went to KJT to eat lunch Then, we polka danced at Sokol, Knights of Columbus, and KJT. Two weeks later, I had my gymnas-

tic competition at Sokol. I got fifth place in my category. After that, we all went swimming. It was really fun. A few weeks later, I had to go to SPJST District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD) in Arlington. I entered sewing, needlework, pictorial arts, hobby kits, photography, individual talent, group talent, and royalty. In royalty, April, my beautiful, older sister, was my queen, and I was her duchess. I honestly thought that April would win because she said a fantastic speech that she wrote, and she looked so beautiful in her dark blue and green dress with a lot of sparkles. She looked like a princess. I wore a dark blue dress that also had a lot of sparkles, and I smiled the whole entire time I was up on that stage. I was for sure that April would win. When they called out the first honorable mention, my smile grew bigger, but when they called out the second honorable mention my smile turn upside down. We got honorable mention. I couldn’t believe it. I was so disappointed. In individual talent, I sang a song from the play that my school did, “The Golden Afternoon” from Alice in Wonderland Jr. I got third place. For group talent, April and I did the cups song including a lot of other songs mixed with it. We called it the “Musical Mashup.” We got second place again. I got honorable mention in pictorial arts, and I got second place in hobby kits. Oh, and I also forgot about all the things that I’m going to State YAD for. I got first places in sewing, needlework, and photography. The very next day, I had to leave for vacation. This summer, my family

went to Gulf Shores, Alabama, to see the white sand. We rented a house on the beach, but when we got there, it turns out that we were a day early. We had to spend a night at a hotel. When we finally got to the house, after we rested for a while, we walked to the beach to swim. After that, we went to the house to take a shower and put on some clean clothes. Then we went to a seafood restaurant. They had delicious food. Pretty much every single day we were up there, we did the same thing. About a week later, we had SPJST camp. This year, the theme was Christmas in July. I had the best time ever. We did so many fun things there like high ropes, low ropes, crafts, swimming, the lake, the blob, the hay ride, and the dance. That is everything I did this summer! Sincerely, Misty Dvorak, age 10 —SPJST—

Last week, I participated in my church’s annual High School Mission Trip. This year, we went to McKinney, Texas, with three other area churches. On the first night, my youth leader told everyone to get pizza and pair up with someone we didn’t know. We had to feed our partner the pizza - to “serve others.” It was an interesting way to start off the week. We did many more team building activities together like playing weird games, having volleyball tournaments, and playing hockey. I had a great time helping the surrounding community

Czech deacons visit Texas

The Galveston County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas (CHST) will honor three visiting deacons from the seminary in Olomouc, Czech Republic, on Saturday, August 2, 2014, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Queen of Peace Catholic Church Life Center, located at 626 Laurel Street in La Marque. This event includes a covered dish luncheon, door prizes, a silent auction, 50/50 drawing, and entertainment by the Texas Czech Legacy Band. For the past 16 years, Reverend Stephen Nesrsta, the former pastor of St. John’s Parish in Fayetteville, Texas, has sponsored a program to bring three future priests to Texas to encounter the Church in the United States; experience life in ordinary Catholic parishes; and broaden their knowledge of English. After the deacons’ month in Texas, they will return to the Czech Republic to work in youth ministries and other Church initiatives before becoming ordained priests in 2015. Attendees should bring a covered dish or dessert and a non-perishable item for the La Marque Aid and Guidance food pantry. Although there are no admission fees for this event, donations will be accepted and appreciated. To RSVP and obtain more detail information, please contact Larry Krc (409) 935-5700 or email larrykrc@att.net. CEFT zdařile ukončila přípravy na oslavy 60. výročí založení nadace Jan Vaculík

Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze České vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu proběhla dne 19. červen ce 2014 v areálu Texaské university v Austině, Tx. v Garrisonově budově za poměrně hojné účasti. Předseda Sboru ředitelů Clinton Machánn zahájil schůzi, přivítal přítomné a hosty a přistoupil k projednávání hlavního bodu pořadu. Tajemník nadace Paul Hlavinka přečetl zápis z minulé schůze a zápis

Texasu dne 19. —SPJST—

Early History In the late 18th century, the Habsburg Monarchy erected the fortress along the Ohře River, near its confluence with the Elbe River at Litoměřice. It was named Theresienstadt after Empress Maria Theresa. Construction started in 1780 and lasted 10 years. The fortress consisted of a citadel, the “Small Fortress” (kleine Festung), to the east of the Ohře, and a walled town, the “Main Fortress” (große Festung), to the west. The total area of the fortress was 3.89 km².In peacetime it held 5,655 soldiers, and in wartime around 11,000 soldiers could be placed here. Trenches and low-lying areas around the fortress could be flooded for defensive purposes. Fortress Josefov in eastern Bohemia was built at the same time and had a similar purpose. The fortress was never under direct siege. During the Austro-Prussian War, on July 28, 1866, part of the garrison attacked and destroyed an important railway bridge near Neratovice (rail line Turnov – Kralupy nad Vltavou) that was shortly before repaired by the Prussians. This attack occurred two days after Austria and Prussia had agreed to make peace, but the Terezin garrison was ignorant of the news. During the second half of the 19th century, the fortress was also used as a prison. During World War I, the fortress was used as a political prison camp. Many thousand supporters of Russia (Russophiles from Galicia and Bukovina) were placed by AustroHungarian authorities in the fortress. Gavrilo Princip, who assassinated Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria and his wife, died there of tuberculosis in 1918. With the collapse of the AustroHungarian Empire in 1918, the town became part of the newly formed state of Czechoslovakia. It was located in an area with a high proportion of ethnic German population, known as the Sudetenland. Nazi Germany used this populations of ethnic Germans as a rationale for expansion of the borders of the Fatherland. In 1938 it annexed the Sudetenland. It then followed in 1939

Terezín During World War II By 1940, Germany assigned the Gestapo to adapt Terezín, better known by the German name Theresienstadt, as a ghetto and concentration camp. Considerable work was done in the next two years to adapt the complex for the dense overcrowding the inmates were subjected to. It held primarily Jews from Czechoslovakia, as well as tens of thousands of Jews deported chiefly from Germany and Austria, as well as hundreds from the Netherlands and Denmark. More than 150,000 Jews were sent there, including 15,000 children. Although it was not an extermination camp, about 33,000 died in the ghetto. This was mostly due to the ap-

The City of Frenstat pod Radhostem in Moravia, Czech Republic, bestowed the title “Honorary Citizen of Frenstat” on Darwin L. Machu in a fitting ceremony on June 14, 2014, at the Frenstat Town Hall, witnessed by his wife, Nancy; their daughter-in-law and her husband, Dawn and Michael Pehl; their grandson Colton Machu; Bailey Pehl; and a host of second and third cousins and friends from Central Moravia. As late as the end of 1944, the Germans were deporting Jews to the death camps. At the end of the war, there were 17,247 survivors of Theresienstadt (including some who had survived the death camps). and Moravia. It was on the other side of the river from the ghetto and operated separately. Around 90,000 people went through it, and 2,600 died there. The complex was taken over for operation by the International Red Cross on May 2, 1945, with the Commandant and SS forces fleeing within

Frenstat pod Radhostem Honorary Citizenship Granted to SPJST Lodge 20, Granger Member Pavlova, Head of the Department of Home Affairs and Education, “The granting of honorary citizenship is the highest form of recognition that the city can use to thank celebrities for their contributions to the City of Frenstat. Mr. Machu is being honored for his contribution in the field of cultural and historical values associated with emigration from Frenstat pod Radhostem to Texas, USA.” Mr. Machu was nominated for this

award by Mr. Jiri Unruh, who submitted his name to the Municipal Council of the Town of Frenstat pod Radhostem. He introduced Mr. Machu to those attending the ceremony, stating that Mr. Machu had kept close ties with the land of his predecessors in Moravia, making many contributions to the town of Frenstat and to the people who live there. In presenting the Document of Honorary Citizenship Award, Frenstat

Mayor, Mgr. Zdenka Lescisinova, stated the following words about this honor, and why it was being given. “The Honorary Citizenship Award is very meaningful because this honor had not been given to anyone since the year 1989. “Events such as famine, poverty, and hunger were the main causes of the mass emigration of weavers and laborers to Texas in the United States in the second half of the 19th century.

Think of this: during the years from 1856 to 1900, more than 1,000 citizens of Frenstat immigrated to Texas. This is the most people to leave from one village in all of Bohemia and Moravia. Because of this, the people of Frenstat have a close relationship with the Czech emigrants and their families in Texas. Today, because of your endeavors, Mr. Machu, visitors to our town and our citizens can recall the hardships of the emigrants during the second half of the 19th century. “Please allow me to relate to you that Darwin Lee Machu organized, collected, and transported from the United States of America to the Czech Republic artifacts and documents from the Czech emigrants’ families for exhibits in the Frenstat Muzeum. He has helped in the past and still helps his countrymen in Texas in their search for their roots in Frenstat and in Moravia. He is active in several Czech organizations where he continues to promote the town of Frenstat and the surrounding villages to the descendants of the Czech emigrants. He promotes and translates countless documents, letters, and ship records of emigrants, as well as the present. “Through his endeavors, he manages to preserve cultural, historical, and other valuable connections of the emigrants and their families to the people of Frenstat and the surrounding areas. With all his outstanding accomplishments, we agree that he deserves the honor that the City of Frenstat pod Radhostelm has given him. “Past history shows that our city has proclaimed the honor of Honorary Citizen on many famous persons. I would like to name some of the persons in the past who have received this honor. There were Josef Kalus, Aloise Fialka, John Knebl, and also Karl Buzka. All those named have deserved the honor because of their contributions beyond the borders and here at home. You, Mr. Machu, because of your contribution to the town of Frenstat pod Radhostem and to the museum’s section dedicated to the emigration to Texas, we think that you deserve to join these persons of stature. “In closing, let me announce to you that on June 5, 2014, the officers of this city voted that Darwin Lee Machu should be awarded the distinction of Honorary Citizen of Frenstat pod Radhostem for his contributions to the continued relations between our city and to the emigrants from our country to the state of Texas, and also serving

as a liaison between the Czech Republic and the United States of America. “Mr. Machu, accept my sincere appreciation of your past and present service as liaison. I wish you the best of health and continued strength in future endeavors.” According to Ivan Pavlek, reporter for the Novy Jicin daily newspaper, Denik, “the new honorary citizen of Frenstat then stood up and, in fluent Czech, humbly thanked the Mayor, the Council, and his friends and family from Frenstat.” “Mr. Machu talked about locating his Knezek family from Frenstat in 2001, his first meeting with Vlasta Knezek Golasova and her husband, Radek, in 2003, when he was declared Pasovany na Valacha, various other visits to Frenstat and everything that had transpired since he met his cousins for the first time. He mentioned bringing his daughter and her family to Frenstat in 2007 as well as visiting in 2008 with the Taylor Czech Chorus who had been invited, through the efforts of Radek Golas, to sing at several festivals in the Czech Republic. Many of those visitors had not been to the Czech Republic before, and they were extremely impressed with the friendliness of the citizens of Frenstat and the beauty of the town. “After introducing his family from Texas to those attending, he stated that he loved Frenstat and the people who live there more than they would ever know and he thanked everyone for this wonderful recognition. He said he was much honored to receive this prestigious award, and he felt that he did not deserve it. “After the ceremony, the American guests and the officers who were representing the City of Frenstat pod Radhostem, all departed to the museum for refreshments and to view the artifacts which had been shipped to Frenstat from Texas. “Jiri Unruh, who has been selected as Frenstat pod Radhostem Liaison with the Czechs in the USA, did not hide his excitement when he spoke to the Novo Jicinsky Denik: ‘I am very happy that Darwin Lee Machu was honored as an Honorary Citizen of Frenstat. I regard him as if he were one of us. It feels so great that we can thank him in this special way for what he has done for our museum, and that he comes here often and promotes our traditions and culture in Texas.’” —SPJST—

Parov Stelar Band highlights 15th year of unique music fest

From www.PraguePost.com Rock For Churchill When: August 29 and 30, 2014 Where: Vroutek, areál Myslivna rfch.cz

This popular Czech music festival Rock for Churchill is unique not only in its musical lineup, but in the way it was established. Some may think it is related to democracy or the Iron Curtain, as Winston Churchill coined the term in a speech. Actually is related to the history of an old church. In 2000, the festival was created to restore the baroque Church of St. James the Greater in the Vroutek. The name Churchill is a pun on “church.” The small town of Vroutek is very proud of their church as it was designated as a cultural monument in 1958. It was built in the 13th century and rebuilt many times throughout its history. The city’s website states that, “We will do everything in our power to ensure that this legacy is conserved for future generations.” And although the church

has been restored, the tradition of the music festival continues today. The lineup usually has about eight international headliners and about 15 Czech performers. This year the two big headliners are The Parov Stelar Band from Austria and The Subways from the UK. The DJ stage will headline performers such as Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Aphrodite, Krafty Kuts, and Aquashy, all from the UK. Audience members can expect genres including rock, reggae, pop, ska, and dance. Parov Stelar is even credited with reinventing the genre of “electro swing.” This genre, as the name implies, combines electronic music with upbeat jazz and swing music. Vroutek is located 88 kilometers from Prague. The town has less then 2,000 inhabitants and so the population will more than double for the last weekend in August. The festival expects some 5,000 people to attend, according to their website. The beer is cheap and camping on site is free, which is a nice treat that festival goers will appreciate.
