Approximately 250 SPJST youth

from across Texas met at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, August 2, 2014, to showcase their knowledge and skills at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). The 2014 competition involved participants in grades kindergarten to high school senior. They competed in 15 events, testing their skills in areas such as construction, foods (candies), handicraft, photography, sewing, public speaking, and talent. The event also featured a special category which is a surprise until the day of the competition. This year, participants were each given a ready-to-assemble gift box that was to be decorated with an assortment of craft supplies. District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and

They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members. SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members. Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualified to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs were held in June and July in Caldwell, Taylor, Arlington, Rowena, Houston, Taiton, and New Braunfels. VӖSTNÍK

Be sure to check out pages 13 to 19 of this week’s Vestnik for the Pet Parade. You will find adorable photos of SPJST members with their very special friends. Thanks to each and every person who submitted these photos. They are so precious, and I think they will brighten your day and bring a smile to your face. They certainly made me smile!

We recently published several SPJST Memories that members shared earlier in the year. The memories were published in the SPJST Member Services Directory that was printed in lieu of the July 2 Vestnik. Since then, we have received calls and comments that more members would like to share their SPJST Memories. Well . . . send them in! We will gladly publish them and very much appreciate you sharing them. And, please include a photo if you’d like. That will make it even more special. Everyone has one. From horseback riding at summer camp to dancing at an SPJST hall. Maybe an SPJST mortgage helped you buy

Use the entry form on the back page of this week’s Vestnik or submit your entry online. It will end up in the Vestnik or maybe in an SPJST advertisement and wouldn’t that make a great memory, too! Mail, email, or enter your memories online at www.spjst.org. Thank you for your participation!

Believe it or not . . . your Editor has completed 500 issues of the Vestnik! I have to say this is a pretty exciting milestone. A special shoutout to all of our Vestnik contributors who make it possible to publish a weekly newspaper. You are what SPJST is all about. And, a very special shoutout to my assistant, Communication Specialist Katherine Morris. She has been there with me through every issue, every challenge, just everything. She is an amazing, dedicated woman who has SPJST deep inside her heart. Thank you, Katherine!

Step Up to the Plate! Membership Program Update Statewide Goal: 1,500 Certificates Issued Through June: 551 Certificates Issued

SPJST Vision Statement Our vision is to provide a wholesome family environment; to encourage cherished Czech traditions; and to provide high quality, competitive life insurance for our members.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

Beginning in 2014, the scope of SPJST’s longstanding Premium Refund Program will be expanded to incorporate the Membership Program incentives, dramatically simplifying the program and compensating lodges on the basis of the premium income generated by the lodge.

The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80 percent of the lodge’s annual earned premium. To receive the Enhanced Pre-

mium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria: 1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program. 2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

For Lodge Incentive updates, please contact the Financial Secretary’s Department. —SPJST—

form. President David Meyer led into new business. The first order of business was setting up the grievance committee. President David Meyer appointed Irene Vrabel and Artie Monson. Vice President/FAC appointed Nathan Wright. Reporter Charlie Anderson volunteered to serve as the alternate committee member. Teresa Anderson stated that JB Anderson’s scholarship check needed to be made out to the United States Army. This year, the scholarship committee gave out three scholarships of $500 each. In January 2012, the lodge voted to give a youth club member a $1,000 scholarship and a non-member $500. Mike Mogonye made the motion that we accept the scholarship committee’s anomaly this year, and award JB Anderson the $1,000 scholarship, the non-member the $500 scholarship, and Cody Helgren a $500 scholarship. After discussion, the motion was passed. Youth Leader Joyce Nelson led a discussion about the youth club. The youth club participates in district functions, including spring and fall business meetings, workshops, camp, YAD, and participating in community events such as Join Hands Day and Make A Difference Day, in addition to donating to local food pantries several times throughout the year, as well as donating to Blue Santa at Christmas and visiting the Elgin Golden Years each Christmas and Valentine’s Day. Vice President/FAC asked the lodge members what they would like to see the youth do. Reporter Charlie Anderson suggested lodge members attend youth club meetings to become more involved with the youth. President David Meyer led into new business. He stated the fall meeting is September 21, and there is a rental the night before. He suggested a catered meal, and Irene Vrabel gave several suggestions. The lodge approved setting the meal price at $3 or $4 to offset the catering cost (after the $750 hosting fee from the district, which in turn comes from the Home Office). It was also approved to hire Kelm Catering to serve a chicken fried steak dinner. The question about the running of the booths came up, and District One Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick suggested asking the district officers to help man booths. Youth Club Leader Joyce Nelson volunteered the youth club to set up the tables. Vice President/FAC Ray Nelson also brought up that in the past it has been asked for the menu to be

more kid-friendly, and he volunteered to cook hamburgers and sausage wraps for the kids. District One Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick and Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny addressed the membership on several issues within the lodge. In essence, fraternal means people helping other people, and to do that requires teamwork. Joyce Nelson and Johnny Vrabel celebrate their birthdays this month. There were no anniversary celebrations. Mike Mogonye stated that his mother Katie has been moved into an assisted living facility in Fredericksburg. He stated his sister put her on Facebook for those wishing to keep in contact with her. Lodge 191, Lufkin invites all to dance this Friday

SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin 31st Anniversary Dance was a great success. There were lots of people, food, and a very good band. Linda Kaye and the Kool Katz did an outstanding job of playing music for the dance crowd. If you have not heard them play, you need to come to the September dance; they will be back again. They played very good dance music, and everyone seemed to have a good time. There was a silent auction with such things as books on CDs, a basket of homemade jellies, vegetables, and fresh tomatoes, hurricane lamps, candle holder, Texas flag stained glass, and one wife donated 10 dances with her husband, who by the way, are both excellent dancers. More than $300 was made on the auction. We still had the 50-50 drawing which goes to the scholarship fund, and dance tickets as prizes. The 50-50 drawing winner was Doyle Oliver. This is about the second time he has won, but he buys a lot of tickets. He donated his half of the $158 back to the lodge. The dance tickets to any dance but New Year’s Eve were won by Marvin McDowell and Elizabeth

Cavanaugh. Congratulations to these winners! Two SPJST $500 scholarships were given out to the recipients at the dance. They were Ashton Allen and Megan Scogin. They both appreciated these scholarships very much. It will help to further their college educations. Thanks to all who brought food for the food table. There was enough food left for the band members to take and eat on their way home. I am sure they enjoyed the left overs since they do not eat before playing. Thanks to Ruth Welch, Kathy Riley, Lois St. John, and Sarah Oliver for the festive July decorations. They did a great job! Glenn Lenderman and Friends will be playing for the August dance, so make plans now to attend. Put a note on the refrigerator, the door as you go outside, your mirror in the bathroom, or on your nose; just remember to show up at the dance. The theme for the August SPJST dance will be “Pirates of the

Caribbean,” so put on your pirate hats, a patch on one eye, your peg leg, your best pirate’s growl, and come and dance the night away. Also, if you can, please bring a potluck dish for the food table. You only have to bring one thing, and that is not like having to prepare a whole meal, and look at the variety of food you get. It is like eating at a restaurant with a buffet. Members on the “under the weather” list are Bobbie Lee Friday getting better now that she is off the ventilator. She is very weak, but she is one tough cookie. Diane McDowell had knee surgery, and she was hobbling around Friday night, but she is doing good. Kathy Riley is doing better with her stress fracture on her foot. Prayers for a speedy recovery for all of these ladies. If you are not a member of SPJST and would like to become a social member, just see one of the members at the next dance or call (936) 8752867 for more information. The dues

are $15 per year, and you get in the dance for $6, plus the anniversary dance is free for members and social members in July each year. The way to become a regular member is to buy a life insurance certificate or an annuity. If there is anything you want to add to the newsletter, or if you know of any of our members who are ill, please email me at GeorgePat@consolidated.net or call (936) 875-2867. I will gladly put it in the next newsletter. Thanks to all of you who read the letter each month. It takes a lot of time to get it done and to mail out the ones who do not have email, but it is worth it if you enjoy reading it. The next SPJST business meeting will be August 11 at 7 p.m. at the lodge. Please come out and support the lodge because the business meeting is the backbone of running the lodge. Everyone’s input is important and welcomed. Pat Scogin, Secretary —SPJST—

Written Words By d.knape

When you stumble upon something written long ago it is like starlight fallen to earth

a memento of someone who is no longer here but speaks nonetheless through their written words

you hear their voice experience their presence as if they’ve never left

the writing brings back beloved memories of the past from times forgotten and for a short time the scrap of words

bonds the people to you holds them to the earth

and inside your heart a tear forms for you have them close again

such is the magic that lies within the beauty of written words. —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader shares activities

Dear Věstník Readers, We have had a very busy summer. District Two swim party was June 20, 2014, at Walker Pool in Temple. The District Two Beseda Dancers performed at Pioneer Day at the CAC. The Belton Fourth of July parade: the State Royalty court rode in the Corvettes. Queen Julia looked so beautiful. I personally rode on the float this year. A big thanks to Melanie and David for all they do. Our SPJST Float received a trophy for “Best Float.” Then afterwards, everyone went to Clem Mikeska’s for lunch. I had a great time. Thanks! July 12 was District Two YAD at Lodge 29, Taylor. We had a lot of winners from the youth club. Both junior and senior group talent, scrapbook, poster are going to State YAD. We had a lot of first, second, and third place winners. I am so proud of all of you; you are all winners to us. July 18 was the Seaton Annual Cookoff. Jerry Pechal ran the hamburger sales for us, since the youth were all at SPJST camp. A big thanks to all who helped Jerry - Ruth Hanusch, Ann Bostick, Edward Mares, Elden Zavodny, and David Pechal. We appreciate it. I heard the burgers were very good, and they stayed busy the whole night. July 18 to 21—SPJST District Two camp was held at Cooper Farm. We had a lot of activities that kept us on the run from going on the bus to the lake for tubing, playing in the water, and shaving cream fights. Back at the camp, there was swimming, “the blob,” archery, BB guns, games, ca-

noeing, flag folding, making snowballs, enjoying ice cream floats per District Two Director Jesse, at the high ropes course “the swing,” zip-line, climbing wall then there was dancing, the grand march, and great food. Thanks to John and Lisa Hoelscher and staff, Patsy, Cristy, and Amber, all the chaperones, and the great LITs. It was definitely a great camp with a lot of fun, and the theme was Christmas in July. On July 27, we had a very successful membership drive at Summer Fun in Belton. We had 19 or 20 potential children and their parents come out to see what SPJST is all about and what we do. And some came to the lodge meeting on August 3. We want to say a big thanks to Angelina, Ginger, and Ron Ringwald for the donation of arm bands they donated for admission into the park. August 2 was State YAD at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center. Some of our members danced the beseda, representing District Two. The kids did special category. Our junior group talent included Dannikka Bartek, Kyndall Carroll, Emma Regan, and Jordan and Bailey Krcha. They placed third with their dance “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Senior group talent was Justin Kraatz and Hunter Bartek with their skit “Who’s on First?” by Abbott and Costello. Julia Zavodny won first place with her “Shopaholic” skit. Brady Alexander was the Top Teen in the State merit

District Five Camp Chaperone Dorothy Pflughaupt enjoyed camping at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm from July 14 to 17, 2014, with her granddaughters Nicole, Aubrey, and Kara Pflughaupt. They dressed as angels for the “Christmas in July” party at camp. They are all members of Lodge 88, Houston.

Congratulations to all who participated. The last monthly meeting was held on August 3 at 1 p.m. President Julia Zavodny called the meeting to order. Dannikka Bartek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and club motto. We had 17 members present and six visitors Taylor Krcha, Hope Moore, Noah Reilly, and Jordan Martinson, and Izzy, and 20 adults. Old business included parade, YAD, camp, cookoff, membership drive, and State YAD. We had each member stand up and tell what they did at YAD, and if they placed. Julia spoke about her year as State Queen. She said it was the “best year of her life,” and she wouldn’t trade a minute of it. I read a letter from Melanie Zavodny thanking us for our help with the car show on May 3 at Star Hall, for the food, and for hosting the event. It

was a wonderful day, and I hope we can do it again next year. We talked about the Corpus Christi getaway which will be August 8 to August 10. If you participate in the sand sculpture contest, the youth club will pay for one night at the hotel. After the meeting, we talked about what we’ll build this year in the sand. At this time, we scheduled a trip to McLane’s Children’s Hospital to present them a check for $250, and I suggested we take crayons, coloring books, markers, and books. We have selected August 15 at 6 p.m. If the date changes, Amber will send out an email. On August 30, District Two Beseda dancers will perform at Westfest. The next meeting will be on September 7 at 1 p.m. at the lodge hall. September 20 will be our annual fundraiser, the Outdoor Extravaganza. David Pechal spoke to us about selling tickets, bringing desserts, and selling ads. Watch the Věstník for more details. September 21 will be District Two Fun Fall Day at Lodge 18, Elgin. Registration starts at 1 p.m. There will be games and the Christmas ornament contest. Please bring dessert for the cake walk, groceries for the spinning wheels, and silent auction item. We decided to have the October meeting in conjunction with the District Two outing at Austin Park and Play, which will be on October 4. Watch for more details to come for time and directions to the facility. District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky spoke to us about the lockin which will be on December 12 at Wilson Recreation Center in Temple. Members having birthday this month are August 4 - Michelle Porubsky; August 6 - former youth club member Brooke Hoelscher; August 13 - Morgan Porubsky, Tyson Bilbrey, and Assistant Sharla Pechal, Brad Kraatz, Joyce Skrabanek, and Ruth Hanusch; August 18 - Hunter Bartek; and August 23 - Chase Alexander. Happy birthday to all! I suggested we start collecting blankets, gloves, and stocking caps to present to the fire station or to Churches Touching Lives through Christ. Polkabeat buys Texas Polka News

Polkabeat Inc. has purchased the Texas Polka News. The transaction was completed on July 26, 2014, and the first issue under the new publisher, Theresa Cernoch Parker, is expected in September. The newspaper was started 26 years ago by musician and polka promoter Julius Tupa of Houston as a way to provide dance enthusiasts with a monthly schedule of events and the latest news of the Texas music scene. When Julius Tupa passed away in 2002, his friend John Rivard became the editor of the newspaper with Tupa’s wife Marie at the publishing helm. The monthly newspaper has grown to have almost 2,000 readers, not only in Texas, but across the country. “I am happy to announce the sale of the paper and see Julius’ legacy live on,” said Marie Tupa. “I can’t thank John enough for his dedication and friendship over the years. And I can’t think of a more fitting person to take the publication to the next level than Theresa. She grew up around polka and continues to promote the music, bands, and dance halls through her website.” Cernoch Parker founded polkabeat.com in 2010 to honor the memory of another polka lover, her father Willie Cernoch, originally from Dubina, Texas. The website provides monthly listings of dances and festivals, as well as news, photos, and videos from events. The site also has a Polka On! store featuring polka apparel, accessories, gifts and CDs/DVDs. More than 1,200 subscribers receive a weekly e-newsletter featuring the weekend lineup of events in Texas.

SPJST Lodge 88, Houston member Theresa Cernoch Parker, left, and Marie Tupa celebrate the sale of the Texas Polka News with a toast of Shiner Beer and kolaches.

“I know Julius and my dad are looking down on us with a smile. The two of them were good friends who thought polka was the best music genre ever. The Tupas and John have provided a wonderful service to Texas music fans over the years and I am honored to be given the opportunity to continue in their footsteps,” Cernoch Parker said. Cernoch Parker is also pleased to announce that Gary E. McKee of Fayetteville, Texas, will serve as editor of the paper. “Gary’s photojournalism and writing skills have been crucial to the success of polkabeat.com. I look forward to working with him as we help readers of Texas Polka News polka on.” For more information on subscribing to or advertising in the Texas Polka News, email theresa@polkabeat.com or click on the TPN link at polkabeat.com.
