SPJST Scholarship Applications Available September through January Applications and all required information must be submitted to the Home Office Fraternal Department by February 1, 2015. To receive a General Scholarship Application and/or *Leadership Grant Application, please call the SPJST Home Office Fraternal Department at (800) 727-7578 or download an application at www.spjst.org.
One of the many benefits SPJST offers to its members is the Scholarship Program. This year, 47 General Scholarships, 11 Leadership Grants, and two Technical Scholarships were awarded. In addition, at the 2014 State Youth Achievement Day, six District Merit Grants, one State Merit Award, and two Royalty Grants were awarded for a total of 69 scholarships and grants presented in 2014. Since the program’s inception, more than $1.5 million has been awarded. General and Technical Scholarships are funded through SPJST’s annual allocation, through voluntary contributions received from our 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and memorial donations received throughout the year. The number of scholarships given each year depends on how much we receive in donations and the annual allocation already in force. Donations are tax deductible. Applications for scholarships are sent out from September through January upon request. The Fraternal Department must receive the completed
application and all required information postmarked no later than February 1, 2015. Recipients are announced in April. The following scholarships are available through the scholarship program:
*Must be an active Youth Club member to apply for the Leadership Grant.
· General and Technical Scholarships – For all SPJST members
· Leadership Grants – For active SPJST youth club members – Applicants may only apply for this grant in his/her senior year of high school. (*Note: Active youth club members are strongly encouraged to apply for both the General Scholarship (or Technical Scholarship if attending a technical school) and the Leadership Grant.
All interested SPJST members who wish to apply for a scholarship must meet the following criteria:
· Applicants must have an active SPJST life insurance certificate in force for at least one full year.

Punctuation is Powerful An English professor wrote the words: “A woman without her man is nothing” on the chalkboard and asked her students to punctuate it correctly. All of the males in the class wrote: “A woman, without her man, is nothing.” All of the females in the class wrote: “A woman: without her, man is nothing.” —SPJST—

Former State Queen remembers Director Krizan
Mr. Krizan welcomed my family and me into District Three with open arms, a kind smile, and always a kiss on the cheek. He remembered me even after my time as State Queen came to an end, and this is one of the many reasons he will be missed. Mr. Krizan showed me just how much power the act of joining hands held, and he whole-heartedly believed in the good, love, and action that SPJST provides and creates. This donation from my family and I is given with the faith and comfort of knowing Mr. Krizan’s memory will be carried out through the next generation of SPJST members. I know Mr. Krizan is smiling his trademark grin in Heaven. May God bless you, Grace A. Dusek 2009-2010 SPJST State Queen Lodge 17, New Tabor District One —SPJST—

Reader enjoys “Old Mikula” article
Dear Melanie, I received my copy of the August 20 Vestnik and was delighted to read “Memories of the Olden Times in Texas,” especially the mention of “Old Mikula” and Martin Kocurek. “Old Mikula” was Josef Mikula, who was born in Novy Hrozenkov,
Moravia, on August 8, 1837; arrived in Texas in 1856; married Eva Kocurek (daughter of Jan and Katerina Jurica Kocurek of Hovezi, Moravia). Martin Kocurek was the brother of Eva Kocurek Mikula. The US Censuses (I don’t recall ever coming up with such a word as “censi”!) of 1870 through 1880 show Josef and Eva living in Fayette County. However, the 1900 US Census shows Josef and Eva and their family living in Burleson County. The story goes that Josef Mikula, his brother-in-law Josef Kocurek, and Josef Slovacek rode horseback together from the Fayetteville area to Burleson County in search of good land. They found such land in what is now the Snook area of Burleson County. Here, Josef Mikula resettled with his family and did blacksmithing and farming. My wife, Mary Ann, is the greatgranddaughter of Josef and Eva Kocurek Mikula, and the little 68-acre tract of land just north of the town of Snook which God has given us to care for is a part of this original Mikula tract. Thanks for the memories . . . (of course, you are much too young to appreciate the source of those words and the melody of which they were a part!). Your friend, John Gantt Lodge 9, Snook —SPJST—

Grandparents’ Day—September 7 Grandparents’ Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. This is a day to remember those who are special in our daily lives. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this wonderful day of celebration. In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for grandparents. Through concerted efforts on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign expanded statewide. Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) was especially instrumental in the project. The first Grandparents’ Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Also in 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a Grandparents’ Day resolution in the United States Senate. The resolution languished in committee. Mrs. McQuade and her team turned to the media to garner support. They also began contacting governors, senators, and congressmen in every state. And, they sent letters to churches, businesses, and numerous national organizations interested in senior citizens. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents’ Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. (September was chosen for the holiday, to signify the “autumn years” of life.) Today this event, begun by only a few, is observed by millions throughout the United States.

Saturday, August 16, 2014 • SPJST Lodge 80, Holland Hall • Submitted by Risa Pajestka
On Saturday, August 16, 2014, Lodge 80, Holland was the site of the Summer Fun fundraiser. Much preparation went into this event which was a great success. Proceeds from the fundraiser go to the lodge to help the community. There was a drawing of excellent prizes such as a riding lawn mower, a dual gas/charcoal grill, and many other exciting items. A silent auction and a live auction were held. Dinner consisted of fried chicken, sausage, mashed potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, tea or water, and
dessert. Other beverages were available, too. 4D Karaoke provided the musical background. Several of our attendees participated in karaoke to the delight of everyone. Many people worked to make this event the huge success that it was. The lodge wishes to thank all those who helped with the fundraiser by selling or buying tickets, set up, take down, clean up, and all the activities that go into getting the hall ready for a large event as this fundraiser.

Monalee had a graveside service, while Nettie’s memorial mass was at St. Thomas Church with Father Tony officiating. Both were our longtime members and will be greatly missed. I further reported that Willie Mae Becan fell recently and was in the hospital. Willie Mae is now at the Court Yard Rehab
Center, 8001 Western Hills Boulevard, Room 8A, Fort Worth, Texas 76108. Her son Bernard also fell and broke his upper arm in three places. While in the hospital, they noted that his knee was swollen, so he had knee surgery and currently is at Health South Rehab. When I first started going to the Friendship Club, there was a very sweet lady member by the name of Rosemary Gribble, now deceased; and her son Ralph died on July 30. There were lots of deaths in July. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all these families. Then I reported on hearing Sunday that Father Gerald, who was at St. Thomas Church for several years then at my church St. Andrews, is very ill. I don’t know any particulars other than he is not doing well. A get well card for Willie Mae and a birthday card for Rose Cuba were passed around and signed by all. Rose was a longtime member and moved to Wichita Falls to be near her siblings. Since then, I have received two phone calls from Rose’s sister Georgia. She said that Rose cannot hear over the phone, but for me to just let her talk. Rose first thanked me for sending her the obituary from the Ennis Daily News on Del Rita Parma Swoboda who was a cousin to Rose and the article on Sister Maggie when she died. In the second phone call, Georgia told me how much she enjoyed reading about Sister Maggie as she is a Ranger fan and knew exactly where Sister Maggie and Sister Frances used to sit at Ranger games. When Rose got on the phone, she talked about the birthday card with all the names and wanted to thank everyone for remembering her 94th birthday. Georgia said Rose is doing fine; she just can’t hear
over the telephone. We all wonder how Shirley Ormsbee, our “chicken lady,” is doing as we have not heard anything lately. We lovingly called her the “chicken lady” as she always picked up the fried chicken for lunch. She had been in rehab. Sharron will attempt to find out some news on her. President Sharron looked into her magic hat and carne up with name of Lora Taylor as our “queen for the day.” Lola demonstrated how to do the “twist,” brought hula hoops which only the children tried; Felma’s son Oliver did real well. Then Felma, in her really high heels, did the twist with Lola, and they were pretty good and most entertaining, too! Door prizes were brought by Anna Johnson (two) and Sharron Connelly. Winners were Mary Schneider, Tracy Horn, and Mary Ann Krivanek. All were happy with their winnings. Carolyn Irby and Betty Krenek were winners of the 50/50 dollar games. Following the meeting, grace was said, and a fried chicken luncheon was enjoyed by all. Then games were played. Special thanks to Joey Bunero for washing all the dishes and to Mary Schneider for drying them. Joey is such a good helper. He washed the dishes, cleaned up the kitchen then went out and wiped all the tables in the dining room. Joey, you can come anytime!

our last meeting from Sharron and Barbara who took her a beautiful red and white bouquet of roses. She has enjoyed visits from a lot of her friends. Lydia thanks all her friends for all the cards she has been receiving. She still doesn’t know when she will be able to go home. Helen Skrasek enjoyed a week’s visit to Oklahoma to be with her son Ron and wife LeeAnn. Helen said she had a glorious time. The late Rosie Steinman’s granddaughter Jill Parker was married to Jack Gibley in July in a beautiful wedding ceremony and reception. Everybody had Rosie on their mind as she would have been so proud. Congratulations to Jack and Jill! Mary Ann Kozel and Shirley Martin were missed at the meeting, but they did join us for games. Mary Ann recently attended the Popp family reunion and said how much she enjoyed visiting with all the relatives. It seems like there have been lots of deaths recently. Tracy Horn had three family members to die in one week Stanley Vrla in Dallas who was her cousin, nephew John Luza in Cypress, and cousin Jerry Luza of Bryan. Our sympathy goes out to you and the families. Tracy certainly enjoyed attending the fourth birthday party for her great-grandtwins. They got costumes for their birthday which were a takeoff from the movie “Frozen,” and both twins enjoyed showing them off. Marilyn Lewellyn talked about her son Charlie Llewellyn, school president at St. Andrews, who recently attended a sportsmanship class at Notre Dame. Since returning, he has been invited to various Catholic schools in the area to pass his knowledge to other

coaches and athletics. Good work, Charlie! I had a real nice experience recently. Jerry Milan won a raffle, and the prize was the use of a suite at Rangers Stadium complete with food, beverages, ice cream, and popcorn for 20 guests. I was invited to be one of the guests. Even though the Rangers lost miserably, it certainly was a fun evening. Thanks, Jerry! The next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 3. I was told we will have an ice cream social so be sure to come with your sweet tooth. See you then! I hope everyone has a safe and happy Labor Day weekend. So Until, Keep Smiling! Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
The Ladies’ Circle meeting of Lodge 92, Fort Worth was called to order on August 12, 2014, with 51 members including the guys and a couple of guests attending. The dress of the day was an “island” theme. Most everyone dawned their “muumuus,” and each was presented with a lei and flower for their hair. Our thanks to Christine Apperson, Wanda Moree, and Sandy Celusniak for “beautifying” us. Everyone looked lovely, and it was fun seeing what people had actually purchased in Hawaii. President Marlene Bass led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and warmly welcomed Binnie and Roy Thiems who seemed to know many of our members already, and Magan Ackermann, Betty Lloyd’s granddaughter from Austin. An update was then given on Lydia Alholm who is recovering from a broken hip and surgery. We were told she is doing great and making good progress in her recovery. If one wishes to send her a card, please send it to her home as someone is picking up her mail for her. Willie Mae Becan is now out of the hospital and living at The Courtyards on Western Hills Boulevard in Fort Worth, and her son Bernard fell and broke his arm and injured his knee. He is currently at Kindred Hospital on 8th Avenue in Fort Worth with several other serious health issues as well. If there were others with health issues that we did not hear from, and
who were absent, please know we miss you and are thinking of you. The meeting proceeded with Theretta Praslicka’s reading of: “What Love Looks Like” and a prayer. Then Secretary Joan read the minutes (which were approved), and Treasurer Margaret Laymance gave the financial report. As Sunshine Chairman, Margaret sent cards to Lydia, Willie Mae, and Bernard. Please remember them in your prayers as they go through these difficult times in their lives. Activities for the September meeting will include the following:
• Czech Heritage Day - Finalizing cake walk details. Lucy Martinez and Margaret Laymance offered to cochair the event with Cathy Simmank agreeing to assist with the “fun stuff.” Remember, we promised homemade cakes for the walk so members, please get busy in the kitchen.
• Project Apple - It was voted on to bring school supplies or donations for children in an area school. The school we’ll donate to has yet to be determined and will be decided upon at the meeting.
• Circle Silent Auction - Members can bring wonderful items they no longer need or something new. The money gained will go into the treasury for donations to outside organizations later in the year. Doris Overstreet, Ann Schneider,
Happy Birthday, Gus and Taylor!

Kitty Rippin, and Cathy Simmank were our hostesses for this day. They provided a delicious meal as did everyone else, and we thank them for their work in the kitchen. Lunch could not have happened without them. Big “happy’s” went out to Mary Ann Gibson, Betty Krenek, Evelyn Scaff, Gloria Farek, Judith Ton-Allcock, Mary Ann Adcock, and yours truly. Missing was Bernard Becan and Claudette Cooper. Later, the song was sung and the wonderful group of “oldies” picture was taken. Sherrie Watkins thanked the Circle Ladies for their donation to the lodge. She purchased kitchen supplies with the funds and was thrilled to be able to do so. Of course, the next event on everyone’s mind are the Czech heritage festivities. We encourage you to set aside the afternoon and evening of September 20 for revisiting the Czech “way” of getting together. There will be visiting with longtime friends, food, and dancing so join us for the celebration. I am certain there will be some silliness along the way as well. Once again, there was an abundance of door prizes. There were 25 winners! About half of the group went home with a goodie. Boo-hoo . . . I was not one of the lucky ones, but that’s okay (smile). It was thrilling to see how happy it made those who got to pick. After a show-and-tell session, the blessing for lunch was given, and bingo followed. It was a great meeting, and we really missed all of you who were not there. Come in September; we’ll be looking for you. Fraternally yours, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

2013 State Queen Julia Zavodny shares farewell thanks
August 3, 2013 . . . The day I was blessed to wear this beautiful crown and carry the title SPJST State Queen. And even up to this moment . . . the nervousness, excitement, and overwhelming happiness that I have felt during that night is still fresh in my memory. How humbling it is to stand here tonight reminiscing on where my journey began over a year ago. Representing my state and platform has brought clarity and direction to my life. Competing in the SPJST Royalty Competition has helped me discover and create the person I was meant to be. Being SPJST State Queen has been such an amazing year of my life, and I have learned and grown so much through-
out this experience. I have acquired skills that will carry me for years to come. Being a spokesmodel for this prestigious program has opened doors for me that would not have been possible, if it were not for SPJST. There are so many people to thank for this journey, and I know I will leave out a few, but know that you are all in my heart. Thank you to all the ones who were part of this roller coaster ride. First of all to my main motivator and cheerleader, my mom. You’re such a strong and beautiful woman who inspires and motivates me to become the best that I can be. I’ll have to admit I’ll miss rehearsing my speech a billion times over again while always remembering to be in model stance. And my dad, thank you for always giving me something to smile or laugh about even on my worst days . . . Your bear hugs make anything possible. To my brother, Chris. For having complete faith in me before I walked on
VӖSTNÍK
stage and wishing me luck at the last second to give me complete hope. Patsy, I remember you motivating the LITs to try out for royalty. Without you, I probably wouldn’t be standing here today with this grand opportunity. I still have my good luck charm from you which I believe helped me accomplish this goal. This beautiful, blue, 20-karat ring made of pure, genuine plastic! To my family and friends . . . My supporters through thick and thin . . . I wouldn’t trade the world for y’all. Thank you for supporting me at all my events and encouraging me to smile even when life gets rough. Melanie and David, for everything . . . From the extravagant floats to simply always being at all the events and maintaining all of us. Being able to revitalize past scrapbooks at the Home Office was such a grand opportunity. To see our ancestors take part in an organization still popular today is quite astonishing. My eyes have seen new places, and my heart has opened to all the people I have met. Traveling all around Texas was such a blessing. I have pictures to look back on, but the memories will always be kept close to me. Our District Two director, Mr. Pospisil. You don’t know how much I appreciate you escorting me the past two years. Your kind words always warmed up my smile and took the nervousness away. A special thank you to Michael Morris. I remember my fellow royalty contestants and I in either Taylor, Temple, or even Seaton using your great skills in speech to help us prepare for this day. Joyce, my youth leader, you were always a supportive aspect that kept me going. To my dear cousin and past State King Jerry, words cannot express how much you inspired me to not give up. I remember you telling me to pray and practice. For it is written, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Lynette . . . It was always a joy to have you at our events. Your contagious laugh and caring self was always there to keep us in line! Last, but not least, to my fellow State Royalty Court. To Emma, I cannot express how overjoyed you were my duchess for the past two years. I couldn’t imagine riding in floats or making public appearances without you by my side. Hopefully, one day, I’ll see you up here in my spot saying words like these.
To Sammy, we’ve made some great memories over this past year. Words cannot express how great the adventures we’ve had. The memories will be close to my heart including all the humorous jokes to make the cloudy days brighter. To Ethan, you and Sammy were the perfect fit to be by Emma’s and my side. Working together to express our love for the Czech culture has made us closer and this was an experience I shall never forget. Everyone who aided me in this journey, thank you for believing me and giving me the opportunity to share my love for our Czech heritage through a lifelong known program to me for generations, the SPJST. If I could repeat this year of unforgettable, heartfelt memories . . . believe me, I would a million times without a doubt. As daunting as it was to be looked up to as a role model for both strangers and friends, I relished the opportunity to give you my very best, to show the world that young adults everywhere are capable of doing great good, and show that in life as it is in sport—we should always give our best—and never, ever give up. No matter the outcome tonight, we are, and always will be, beautiful inside and out—dedicated to making our lives and the world we live in a better place. Thank you for being here. For supporting me in this and every day, and for being the very essence of what makes Texas the place to be. And to the contestants of SPJST Royalty 2014, I wish you all the time of your lives . . . Now I shall say farewell for my reign is over but believe me, I’ll still be an active, cheerful member who will always support my fellow court in the generations to come. Dear Youth Leaders, What an exciting time we had this summer! I had a great time being at all district camps and enjoyed the fun activities at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. I really enjoy watching the youth interact with one another and how it helps them to come out of their comfort zone. I saw this happen with many new campers and experienced ones, too. You inspire them to be more confident in themselves, lead by example in teaching them to build lifelong friendships, and provide lasting memories from our SPJST camp. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped with State Youth Achievement Day on August 2 at the Mayborn Center in Temple. Your assistance was greatly appreciated, and I could not have done this without you. This year’s constructive items and special category projects were absolutely amazing.

Grandparents’ Day September 7 is Grandparents’ Day. We all know that we live in a fastpaced world, but if we would slow down and take the time to visit with our grandparents we would learn so much from them. Marian McQuade of Fayette County, West Virginia, is the founder of Grandparents’ Day. Her aspiration was that such an observance might persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage of their grandparents. The first presidential proclamation was issued in 1978, with one issued each year since, designating the first Sunday after Labor Day as national Grandparents’ Day. All youth club members are encouraged to honor their grandparents and the grandparents in their lodges during the month of September.
Observe Czech Heritage Month in October All youth clubs are encouraged to observe — and celebrate — Czech Heritage Month at their October meeting. Something you may want to discuss at your September youth club meeting . . . During the 74th Legislature Session 1995, House Resolution 83 and Senate Resolution 1023 were passed designating the last full week in October beginning in 1995 as Czech Heritage Week in Texas. That declaration was expanded in 1999, when the 76th Legislature of Texas passed a resolution signed by Governor George W. Bush declaring that the month of October annually be observed as Czech Heritage Month in Texas to commemorate the contributions of Czech culture to the state.
Make a Difference Day is October 25 Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others - a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. The next event is Saturday, October 25. Who can participate? Anyone! Young and old, individuals and groups can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be a big project like collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neigh- bor or relative. Lodge 30, Taiton youth visits Gruene Hall
Dear Vestnik Readers, I went to Gruene Hall. It is the oldest and continually operating dance hall in the state of Texas. Gruene hall has been instrumental in starting the careers of Lyle Lovett, George Strait, Hal Ketchum, and many others. The stage has seen the likes of Bo Diddley, The Dixie Chicks, Jerry Lee Lewis, Garth Brooks, and Willie Nelson. It was an experience to see where these famous people played and to see the oldest dance hall in Texas. Brittany Baker —SPJST—

Still, my favorite activity was going to the lake. I liked riding in John’s boat because he goes fast, and I flew out of the tube. Also in two years, I will get to be an LIT. Heritage Day at State Fair of Texas set for October 19
The North Texas Czech community has been gathering at the State Fair of Texas to celebrate Czech Day for over 80 years, always welcoming to share its customs, food, and fun. Several years ago, they joined with other ethnic communities such as Norwegian, Irish, German, and Italian to create a larger festival and share their cultural traditions in one big event called Heritage Day. Heritage Day is a great opportunity to enjoy the State Fair with your families - with the continuous performances, visit your friends, munch on klobase and kolace, listen to the music, and sip your favorite beverage at the Heritage Day home base then venture out to see the many sights of the fair. Enjoy the rides and games on the Midway, see the latest cars in the Automobile Building, check out the fabulous quilts, collections, and food

A Moment of Thanks for the Grandparents Who Spend a Lifetime Caring
O
n Grandparents’ Day, we celebrate the
importance of today’s seniors in the lives of their families and the younger generations of our community. Their insight and experience teach us important lessons, and their devotion to their grandchildren reminds us of what’s really important. Grandparents Few can bring the warmth We can find in their embrace, And little more is needed to bring love Than the smile on their face. They’ve a supply of precious stories, Yet they’ve time to wipe a tear, Or give us reasons to make us laugh, They grow more precious through the years. I believe that God sent us Grandparents As our legacy from above, To share the moments of our life, As extra measures of His love.
