Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Member Jeffrey Brown Presents Listopad

November 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe. To complement the a n n i v e r s a r y, SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point member Jeffrey Brown presents Listopad, a Czech film that he Jeffrey Brown produced that will be shown across the state in October and November. Gary is best known for winning Best Cinematography (Education of Shelby Knox) at Sundance 2005, Emmy and Oscar-winning docs and shooting regularly with Oscar-winning documentarian Barbara Kopple.

Synopsis Petr, Jiri, and Ondrej are an unlikely trio of friends. An artist, a hockey player, and a music trader, the boys survive Communism by playing sports, drinking beer, chasing girls, and listening to underground music. VӖSTNÍK

Coming Soon! Thanks to our Vestnik contributors for their submissions! We are

still slightly backlogged, but watch for these features in upcoming Vestniks:

• Announcement of Vestnik Czech Heritage Month activity winners • Introduction of new Supreme Lodge Vice President Clifton Coufal • Scenes from fall meetings/fun days held in Districts One and Four • District Two Fraternal Field Manager hosts agent meeting • Scenes from Lodge 88, Houston Czech Day • Special feature of a member who receives his military medals after 70 years • Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Club welcomes new members Value and Invest in Yourself If you are into financial investment, you’re probably very familiar with Mr. Warren Buffet (1951-present). He is the most successful investor in the world. His investment strategies are legendary, and many people seek to learn after him. Even more respectable, he pledged to give away 99 percent of his wealth (more than $30 billion at the time of the pledge in 2006) to non-profit foundations, mostly to Bill Gate’s Foundation. Mr. Buffet often travels to universities to give speeches to educate and motivate students. Here is one of his speeches to teach us the value of our body, to invest in ourselves, in education for a great future. Imagine that a Genie offers you any car in the world. The catch is that it is the only car you will ever own. What would you do? You would read the manual 10 times, change the oil twice as often as required, and you would take fas-

tidious care so that that car remained the car of your dreams forever. Think about what this tells you about your body. You get only one mind and one body . . . the same ones you will have at 20, 40, 60, etc. Take care of them and maximize their potential. It will be too late to take care of your body and mind (and car) later on. You can maintain them, but it is hard or impossible to undo big mistakes or negligence later on. You do not want to end up with a wreck on your hands. Your main asset in life is yourself. Treat yourself as a valuable asset. I often explain to students that I would be willing to pay today for a percentage of the future earnings of good students. If you value yourself, and invest in yourself, you will be worth a great deal throughout your lifetime, both to yourself and to your community. —Warren Buffet Butterflies A treat for any weary eye the joyous flight of Butterflies

who flit like fairies place to place spreading joy in amazing grace how would it be if we could fly bringing delight as we pass by

if only we would give it a try and spread our joy like butterflies. —d.knape —SPJST—

Lodge 15 Buckholts seeks roof repairs

SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts meeting was called to order at 5 p.m. by President Doug Williams. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Regina Peevey followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present except Vice President A.W. Zajicek. A.W. called and said to tell everyone hello, and that he is improving and hopes to be back with us soon. That is good news for we have really missed him and Lamerle at the meetings. We were so delighted to have Dis-

trict Two Director Jesse Pospisil and his wife Linda at the meeting. Jesse brought us a new SPJST sign and brought items for the door prize drawings. We appreciate so much all they do for us. Jesse presented dedicated member Mary Chudej with an Every Day Hero pin. We appreciate her baking kolaches and entering them at the annual SPJST Car Show held at Lodge 47, Seaton earlier this year. Also, Every Day Hero pins were awarded to Regina Peevey, Sandie Fischer, and Ben Button for all they do for the lodge. We were so thankful for a $100 gift to help us on our roof repair from Jesse and Linda. We appreciate this so much.

Bill Greenway who owns All Points Roofing and Construction and resides in the Edgeworth community with his wife and family—phone (254) 931-7336—attended the meeting. He discussed different ways we could temporarily repair the roof. More leaks have shown up after the high winds and heavy rain storms. We must do something soon before the interior receives more damage. We wish we could afford a completely new roof for none of these temporary repairs will last very long, but we do not have the finances for that. We are few in number and do not have any way to bring in much revenue. Rentals for the most part take care of utilities and other expenses. Bill Greenway suggested we check with the local RVOS Insurance to see if it would help us due to the damaging high winds and heavy rain storms in the area, which has caused damages to the roof. We thank Bill for taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with us. Delicious taco soup, cornbread, salad, and chocolate cake were served by Sandie Fischer from her Post Office Restaurant here in Buckholts. It was so good; most everyone had to have a second bowl! Virginia Williams made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Sandie Fischer. Motion carried.

Next Meeting—November 10 The next meeting will be on Monday, November 10. We hope you can be there. Fraternally, Dorothy Tomascik Secretary —SPJST—

District Two Youth Enjoy Fun Day at Austin’s Park n’ Pizza

Dear Vestnik Readers, District Two youth and their families enjoyed a wonderful day near Austin, Texas, on Saturday, October 4, 2014. The weather was absolutely beautiful for our social at Austin’s Park n’ Pizza in Pflugerville. There was fun for all our group—ages two years to ? years. The highlights of the outdoors were the go-carts and the boats which sprayed water. I must say I think the gocart line was filled with SPJST members the entire day. Not only were there many youth members, but there were adults who got out of the go-carts and got right back in line for the next round. Of course, some (no names mentioned, J.P.) had a little trouble getting out of the go-cart. It was great watching adults have as much fun as the youth! Let me tell you . . . those boats that sprayed water had some shooting distance on them! I tried to avoid getting sprayed, but that didn’t happen, now did it,

Brinley? Of course, the wet spray felt good. Many also enjoyed playing puttputt and other rides. The indoors was just as great as we enjoyed the all-day pizza buffet with tacos, salad, and drinks. The laser tag was the highlight of the indoors as was the bouncy house, games, and so much more. Thank you to all 87 who came and enjoyed our district fall social. It was so good to have a family social especially with all the smiles and laughter it brought to everyone. Members attending were from Lodges 18, Elgin; 20, Granger; 29 Taylor; 47, Seaton; 87, Temple; and 187, Round Rock. So good to have you all! Svacina and Kolaches this Thursday in Temple

The Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, in partnership with SPJST, has extended the popular “All Things Czech” lecture and discussion series through the fall and winter months. The next presentation will be on Thursday, October 23 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. The presentation will focus on “The Czech Svacina” and is a repeat of the program originally presented on July 20 at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. “We had a great time presenting the svacina program in Houston and have received numerous requests to present it in Temple,” says SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, who will be co-hosting the program with Carol White. “It’s a fun event — even educational — and one which I would definitely be ready to take on the road if any lodges are interested!“ The tradition of svacina can be traced back hundreds of years to the Czech lands of Moravia and Bohemia. The word itself — pronounced “svahchee-nah” is derived from the old Czech word “svac” which meant a get-together of friends or acquaintances. “Svacina isn’t lunch and it isn’t dinner. It’s something in-between,” says Vanicek. “It can include everything from sausage and sauerkraut to kolaches, strudels, cakes, and pies.” The October 23 program tells the story of the svacina from early days to modern times, with an emphasis on the Texas Czech svacina, with an emphasis on kolaches. Co-host Carol White is the owner and operator of Kolache Kitchen baking and catering service in Temple. A testament to her baking expertise, Carol is the 2011 and 2013 Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of the Caldwell Kolache Festival

Czech Center Museum Houston invites all to visit

Dear Friends and Fellow SPJST Members, Greetings from the Czech Center Museum Houston (CCMH)! We are thrilled to announce that we are celebrating our 10th year in Houston’s Museum District, and in honor of it all, we are hosting a year-long lineup of special events at the museum. We invite you to enjoy and support these performances and festivities that we will be bringing to Houston and to the Texas Czech community in the coming months. First, an update: On Friday, October 3, the CCMH held a public poetry reading and book signing with Czech poet Sylva Fischerová. It was an honor to host the young writer, who was in Houston as part of her North American tour to promote her new bilingual collection of poems, “Stomach of the Soul.” Ms. Fischerová hails from the Czech Republic, where she teaches at Charles University in Prague. Fischerová studied French at a school in Brno, and since the event took place in the CCMH’s Brno Gallery, she started off the reading with a poem from the book about the Czech town of the same name. It was quite a moving experience to hear the poems read

in both English and Czech. In signing copies of the book for audience members, Fischerová graciously gifted a copy to CCMH’s Comenius Library. Ms. Fischerová grew up in the city of Oloumouc, where her father had been a rector at Palacký University. As a dissident during communist rule, her father was also a close friend of Václav Havel, the playwright, poet, and philosopher who played a huge role in the Velvet Revolution and would later become President of Czechoslovakia. All of this brings to mind that the 25th Anniversary of the Velvet Revolution is fast-approaching on November 17! Every year, the CCMH commemorates this important and democratizing event in Czech history. The date marks the beginning of the end of communism in what was then Czechoslovakia – a day in 1989 when a large student demonstration was suppressed by riot police in Prague. In less than a week, the number of protestors openly supporting the revolution grew from tens of thousands to 500,000. The Velvet Revolution stands as a remarkable testament to the power of peaceful protest and the resolve of the Czech people.

You Are Cordially Invited With that preamble in mind, please mark the date—Saturday, November 15—and make plans to join us at the CCMH for our “Ten Years — Ten Million Anniversary Celebration” as we pay tribute to the courage and fortitude of our Czech forefathers. Listopad

a student demonstration in the streets of Praha. Face-to-face with the riot police, the boys are forced into a momentous decision: stand up against the Communist regime or give in to a system that has silenced their families for generations. Based upon true stories from the Velvet Revolution, Listopad is a timeless story of political and artistic courage. Seen through the eyes of Petr, Jiri, and Ondrej, Listopad brings to life the exhilarating days of November 1989 when, in spite of everything and everyone arrayed against them, students, artists, and dissidents filled the streets of Praha to stand up for their hopes and dreams of freedom. Director/DOP Gary Griffin filmed the events of 1989 in Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania, and Hungary for NBC. He has shot hundreds of documentaries and a number of narrative features over the last 35 years. He was awarded Best Cinematography at the 2005 Sundance IFF for the documentary The Education of Shelby Knox and was DOP on the 1993 Academy Award-winning short doc Educating Peter. He shoots regularly for Oscarwinning director Barbara Kopple and has recently shot on Jeff Reichart’s Remote Area Medical, supported by Cinereach. He has taught Camera at American University since 1992 and heads up their Prague studies program. Jeffrey Brown has produced a number of award-winning narrative features and feature documentaries in Europe, Africa, and the United States. His narrative feature Mamas & Papas won Best Film and Best Script at the 2010 Hamptons IFF while Shut Up and Shoot Me won Best Narrative Feature at the 2007 AFI Dallas IFF. He executive produced Academy Awardwinning Czech director Jan Sverak’s Kooky, Special Jury Prize Winner at

the 2010 Karlovy Vary IFF in the Czech Republic. He just completed production on a feature documentary on Somali pirates and Listopad, a narrative feature on the Czech Republic’s Velvet Revolution, and the Last Underground, on Czech underground art

and music. He is co-producer of No No: A Dockumentary premiered at 2014 Sundance Film Festival and played SXSW that was released in September 2014. His recent documentary The Grove, Texas won Best Texas Film at Fredericksburg’s 2014

Hill Country Film Festival this past May. Jeffrey splits time between Prague, Czech Republic, where he has lived for the last 20 years, and Wimberley, Texas. Jeffrey grew up in Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M University.
