Clifton Coufal of Lodge 47, Seaton Named SPJST’s 14th Vice President
Hello, Vestnik Readers, I am honored to introduce myself to you as the new SPJST Vice President. It feels so good be back home! I was raised on a farm just down the road from SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. Growing up, both Seaton Star Hall and Seaton Brethren Church were important to me. I enjoyed participating in the Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club as sergeant-atarms under the watchful eyes of my youth leaders, attending camp, and participating in various community events and charitable projects. I must admit that my passion, even through the present day, is playing taroks. I absolutely love the game! I remember at the age of four, my grandfather first taught me the cards in the deck starting with the four suits and, once I was comfortable with those, moved on to teaching me the trump cards. My family would play taroks weekly at my grandparent’s house, and I was able to participate and learn from some excellent players. My family would frequently attend tarok tournaments, and I was always brought along to enjoy the event. At the age of nine, I was allowed to play in my first tournament! Since that time, I have continued to play in tournaments with friends and family and even started a tarok group
when I attended law school. After obtaining my master’s degree in marketing from Texas A&M, I worked for JP Morgan Chase where I was a business specialist and utilized my FINRA and insurance licenses to create plans for businesses and individuals to help them achieve their financial goals while consistently achieving top performance goals. I then attended Duke Law School in order to further develop my understanding of the legal side of sales and financial products. I am a licensed Texas attorney and expect to provide guidance for not only the business development aspects but also on strategy within a regulatory framework. Other career-related experiences include serving as a Texas Governor’s Fellow in the General Counsel’s Office, finance projects at the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. in Washington D.C., developing marketing strategies for Hewlett-Packard, and presenting a proposal to Office Max’s Board of Directors to increase sales. I have led teams across the globe ranging from leading a group of 14 International MBA students from four different countries earning a “Golden Sales
Remembering those who paid for our freedom. That is the goal of Texas Czech Genealogical S o c i e t y ’s Czech Veterans Museum and Czech Ve t e r a n s ’ Wall of Honor, located in the basement of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple. The Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor was first displayed on March 27, 2010, at a TCGS event entitled Let Freedom Ring. Since that time, the wall has grown to well over 100 feet, honoring more than 1,000 Czech Veterans and

How Will You Be Remembered?
bout a hundred years ago, a man looked at the morning newspaper and to his surprise and horror, read his name in the obituary column. The newspapers had reported the death of the wrong person by mistake. His first response was shock. Am I here or there? When he regained his composure, his second thought was to find out what people had said about him. The obituary read, “Dynamite King Dies.” And also, “He was the merchant of death.” This man was the inventor of dynamite and when he read the words “merchant of death,” he asked himself a question, “Is this how I am going to be remembered?” He got in touch with his feelings and decided that this was not the way he wanted to be remembered. From that day on, he started working toward peace. His name was Alfred Nobel, and he is remembered today by the great Nobel Prize. Just as Alfred Nobel got in touch with his feelings and redefined his values, we should step back and do the same. What is your legacy? How would you like to be remembered? Will you be spoken well of? Will you be remembered with love and respect? Will you be missed?

Dear Editor Zavodny, My name is Deanne Skrivanek Butterfield. I shared a few memories of Daddy’s (Dr. John M. Skrivanek) dream of the founding of CEFT at the 60th anniversary celebration of CEFT at the SPJST Home Office in Temple on October 19, 2014. I would be delighted if you could include my remarks in a future Vestnik edition. Thank you so much. Best regards, Deanne Skrivanek Butterfield Lodge 39, Bryan •••
Good afternoon. My name is Deanne Skrivanek Butterfield, and this is my daughter, Kelly Capps. My father was Dr. John M. Skrivanek, one of the three founders of CEFT (Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. I am so happy to be here celebrating the 60th anniversary of CEFT! How time flies! My father would be thrilled to find CEFT still working to preserve everything Czech! I can still hear him when I was a little girl at home say, “Czech is the third most spoken language in Texas after English and Spanish.” I knew when he went to Praha to work on his PhD in Modern Languages in 1946, that he was serious about our Czech heritage as his dream was to have the Czech language and culture taught not only in universities and colleges but also in high schools. Mother and my twin brother, John David, and I were to join him in Czechoslovakia in 1947. We rode the train to New York City in November. It was so exciting watching the Macy Thanksgiving Parade — in the snow! How often does it snow in central Texas?! However, it was not exciting receiving a telegram from the

Czech embassy and from Daddy telling us not to continue our journey to Czechoslovakia. The region was experiencing a severe winter and the Communists were taking over. So we returned to Texas and my second grade class. Henry Marsh, another of the founders of CEFT, was our family doctor when Daddy taught at the University of Houston. My brother remembers Dr. Marsh and Daddy talking about creating an organization to promote the teaching of the Czech language and the preservation of the culture and heritage of the Czech people. With attorney August Kacir, the three of them made it happen in 1954. Dr. Marsh passed away a few years after the birth of CEFT. Daddy died in 1972 following a year’s sabbatical at Charles University in Praha writing Czech textbooks. Mr. Kacir died in 1973. Then, unfortunately, CEFT languished for a number of years. J.J. Skrivanek, my father’s twin brother, who had helped with the teaching of Czech at A&M, picked up the baton, and CEFT was revitalized. New officers and directors were selected, and CEFT was clicking again. I know all three of the founders would heartily express many, many thanks for all those who worked hard for the establishment of CEFT at the University of Texas, the programs at A&M and North Texas and, I am sure, encouragement for those groups who established the Czech Cultural Center in Houston, the Czech Heritage Center in La Grange, and today’s leaders of CEFT. God bless each one of you and in 40 more years . . . the 100th anniversary of CEFT! —SPJST—

From the President’s Department State FAC Shares November Fraternal Updates
Fraternalist of the Year Program Seeks to Recognize Devotion and Service Through the Fraternalist of the Year program, SPJST lodges honor lodge members who through example and accomplishment have provided outstanding fraternal service to their lodge, society, and community during the past year. Please complete the SPJST 2014 Fraternalist of the Year program nominating form. One was provided to you in my October Fraternal Activities Coordinators packet, and you will also find the form in this month’s packet. If you need another form, you may go online to spjst.org and download the form or contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at the Home Office. I hope that every active lodge considers designating a Fraternalist of the Year in 2014 — someone who has shown a strong commitment to SPJST while making a tireless effort to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Your local lodge Fraternalist of the Year may be chosen in a variety of ways. The lodge decides upon the method that works best for you. The main emphasis should be on making sure that all adult members 16 or older be considered without bias and that the member’s effort was in some way exceptional or outstanding. SPJST Fraternalist of the Year forms will be reviewed by an outside fraternal organization to select the SPJST Fraternalist of the Year and honorable mention candidates. For that reason, we ask that your nomination form for the Fraternalist of the Year be returned to the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator by December 11. Late submissions will be accepted; however, because of the time element involved, they may not be considered for SPJST Fraternalist of the Year honors. All lodge honorees will be recognized at the annual Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet to be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple. All other deadline dates remain the same. They are:
February 13—Outgoing officer awards
January 9—Year-end fraternal incentive reporting hours
Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do
January 2, 2015—New officers’ addresses, phone listings, and emails
May 15—990 and 990-T to IRS and copy to Home Office
Lodge Officer Workshop Please know, I will be getting in touch with your district director and district president in the coming days to coordinate lodge officer training workshops for January, February, and March. Lodge officer training workshops were discussed in the Fraternal Activities Coordinators meeting held on June 21. The decision was made to take these classes on the road to the districts. The Fraternal Department is also working on a training video that will be used for the class. Please check your Vestnik for dates and times, and I will also post those times in my next newsletter.
Officer Elections The end of another year is rapidly approaching. Many lodges have had a very productive and successful year. This is the time of year when lodges across the state will be electing leaders for the coming year. Has your lodge moved forward? Has your lodge met all of its goals? Has your lodge completed all of their projects planned for the year in your community? Has your lodge set goals for 2015? Keeping these questions in mind, they may help you make choices on who you will elect to keep your lodge moving forward in the coming year. It is the duty of all members to provide the leaders of their lodge with suggestions, ideas, and assistance. When asked to assist with activities throughout the year, please help your lodge officers. Fraternalism works best when every member is involved in the process. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to update your meeting time and date under SPJST Fraternal Activities and Entertainment in the last two pages of the Vestnik. If any of this information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at (800) 727-7578 and have her update your lodge information.
not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2015 and does not seek reelection in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meetings. 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will continue through March of 2015. All members are encouraged to give their support as you have in the past. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large.
Veterans Day On November 11, please remember to honor our veterans who have bravely answered the call to defend our right of freedom, aided and comforted our friends and allies, and have turned away countless aggressors. We, as a nation, can never repay our debt of gratitude to the many men and women who died in the line of battle or were wounded to protect the right of our freedom. Please pause on this day and at your local lodge meeting (even if it is after November 11) to recognize and thank the veterans and the many military men and women who have fought in the past and are still fighting today to protect our freedom.
Christmas Open House Please make plans to be in Temple on Monday, December 1. This is the date of the City of Temple’s annual Christmas parade and tree lighting. Again, this year, SPJST will participate in the parade so come out to see the SPJST Floats and State Royalty. Following the parade, SPJST will host the annual Christmas Open House at the Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. What a great time to visit the Home Office and socialize with fellow SPJST members. Refreshments will be served and again there is a rumor that Santa and Mrs. Claus will stop by for a visit at the Home Office. Spread the word about this fun event. Watch the Vestnik for additional details as they become available.

Johnnie R. Krizan Endowed Scholarship to Support Active Youth Club Members
The Johnnie R. Krizan Endowed Scholarship Fund has been initiated by SPJST District Three to honor the memory of District Three Director Johnnie R. Krizan. Director Krizan passed away on July 24, 2014, due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident near West. The scholarship will provide support for graduating high school seniors who have Johnnie R. Krizan demonstrated outstanding participation and achievement in the SPJST Youth Program. Details relating to the qualifying criteria for the scholarship were determined during the business meeting held in conjunction with the District Three Fall Fun Day on Sunday, October 26, 2014, at Lodge 84, Dallas. “Brother Krizan was a strong supporter of the SPJST Youth Program,” says District Three Director John Engelke. “There was also a keen recognition on the part of District Three members that Johnnie’s influence in matters of Society business extended far beyond the boundaries of his district.” In acknowledging Brother Krizan’s commitment to District Three and statewide influence, District Three members voted that for the first five years of its presentation, the Johnnie R. Krizan Scholarship is to be awarded to a District Three recipient. In the event that there are no qualifying recipients from District Three, the selection will be made from the statewide pool of applicants. In year six — and beyond —
the recipient(s) will be selected on a statewide basis. By definition, an endowed scholarship is one in which the principle remains intact and only the interest is awarded each year. The minimum gift needed to establish a named, endowed SPJST scholarship is $10,000. Once the fund reaches $20,000, the scholarship will be awarded annually in the honoree’s name. To date, more than $13,000 has been donated to honor Johnnie’s memory. “The Johnnie R. Krizan Endowed Scholarship Fund establishes a permanent funding source that will support deserving students today and in the future,” says Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “What few people know is that Brother Johnnie helped to establish the SPJST Scholarship Program Endowment Fund,” says Supreme Lodge President Vanicek. “As a result, SPJST is now on its way to building a selfsustaining scholarship program. An SPJST Endowed Scholarship is a perpetual gift because only the interest is applied towards the scholarship while the principle continuously grows.”
Your Kind and Generous Support is Appreciated SPJST members, lodges, and districts seeking to contribute to the Johnnie R. Krizan Endowed Scholarship Fund may make checks payable to: The Johnnie R. Lodge 32, Victoria hosts Czech meal, garage sale
What a huge success our Czech meal was! Thanks to all for bringing delicious sides to go with the chicken and dumplings, chicken noodle soup and sausage. All the dishes were so good, and the desserts were awesome. Now, I am “unofficially” naming the most unusual dish brought by Sylvia Kocian – and she got the recipe from the first SPJST cookbook. Everyone thought it was a sweet potato casserole – but much to our surprise, Sylvia informed us it was a carrot casserole – so good. kudos to Al Haisler. As always, he graciously agreed to entertain us with our favorite Czech songs. It makes our meal so festive. Thank you, Al! On October 15, the garage sale committee met at our building and set up for the garage sale. Thanks to Lois Elles, Ray and Ernestine Fagg, Jimmy and Joette Otto, and Buddy and Nancy Zaplac for setting up the tables and making sure items were displayed for the big event. Without you, we would not have been able to open the doors— thanks again. On October 18, we opened the door at 8 a.m. and had a productive day. Garage sale workers were Kathy Ahlstrom, Lois Elles, and Buddy and Nancy Zaplac. Allison Elles came by a couple of times to check on us and give her “garage sale queen” advice. It all made for a great day of visiting with each other as well as with our customers! We had a lot of merchandise and people shopping, but at the end of the day, Mike and Kathy Ahlstrom delivered two loads to the Salvation Army and a few items to Re-Store/Habitat For Humanity. Editor’s Note: Edward Laitkep submitted the following information for nomination to the Texas State Musicians for his dad, the late Rudy Laitkep. According to TSM, it doesn’t accept posthumous nominations. Here is the nomination/tribute for Rudy.
I would like to nominate my dad for 2015 to 2016 Texas State Musicians. My dad’s name is Rudy Laitkep, Sr., and he played accordion for 75 years. He taught himself on an accordion his dad brought with him from the Czech Republic. My dad was only seven years old and played for his first public appearance at the end of the school year, 1932. He also taught the late Bill Mraz how to play without notes. Myron Floren from the Lawrence Welk Show wanted my dad to go with him to California, but my dad couldn’t
go due to his job. So Myron watched my dad play at the New Braunfels Fest some years ago. Myron fell in love with the TickTock Polka so my dad had to hum it for Myron, and he wrote it in shorthand. Sometimes my dad was watching the Welk’s show then switched to Branson, Missouri, where Myron had his place. He was playing his accordion then Myron said my next number will be for my accordion buddy in El Campo. He played the Tick-Tock Polka. My dad even sat in with Bob Wills and played all over Texas. My dad played for senior citizen dances and donated his time and music at many local rest homes. Submitted by, Edward Laitkep Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje —SPJST—

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
Here I am on Saturday morning trying to think of something profound to impart, and all I can think of is the holidays that are fast approaching. By now, we have a new governor (humm-m) and Election Day has passed, Veterans Day remembrances are in order on November 11, Thanksgiving is around the corner, and Christmas is only 62 days away. Good golly . . . such a busy time: gotta get busy. Now that I’ve made your day, I’ll proceed with the meeting report. The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth met late in October on the 14th. Although we were warned that quite a few of our members would be away having lunch with their former priest, we did end up with quite a nice group. There were 48 total attending including guests and gentlemen. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance, and new members and visitors Louise Collins, Carolyn Belew, Marilyn Di Orio, and Jan Taborsky were warmly welcomed. Theretta Praslicka read a sweet message and gave the opening prayer. The minutes were sort of read and approved. Margaret gave the status of our finances. With the silent auction last month and cake walk fundraiser, we were able to put a good bit into the till. Updates on missing members were given. Evelyn Scaff was under the weather (sciatica I think) and has since gone to the hospital with another serious problem. Get well soon, Ms. Evelyn. Helen Kubala fell and broke the bone above her eye. That had to have hurt. Madeleine Myers’ knee surgery has been further delayed due to other health issues. Bernard Becan is still in rehab with his knee situation. Lucy Martinez thanked the group for providing the many cakes needed for the “walk.” There were extras left so she sold them after the “wheel” closed. Someone made an Earthquake Cake which apparently was awesome. Gloria Farek wants that recipe. She announced it was to die for, and her son would only let her have one bite a day. Gloria was also thanked for the very cute “spider” favors she made for everyone. She surprises us each month with special goodies that are so unique and very much appreciated. She’s

very creative. Thanks to Bessie Ellsworth for the cute mini pumpkin planters placed on the officer’s table. She had one for each of the officers, and mine still looks great. President Marlene thanked the members once again for the abundance of school supplies brought last month. We even received more this month, and they were taken to Greenbriar Elementary School near my home.
New Business November will be Thanksgiving, and we ask that those attending bring canned good or non-perishable food items for the Food Bank of Tarrant County. We will also be hosting a Thanksgiving box. Members are asked to bring short Thanksgiving stories or memories they wish to share with the group. They can be signed or unsigned as one wishes. We are so blessed and thought this might encourage everyone to think about those blessings. December’s Catered Lunch—It was determined that the ladies wish to meet at the lodge hall and have their meal catered. President Marlene asked for suggestions for caterers whom she could contact. So if you have a suggestion, please call her and let her know. She is working on a presentation, and a decision will be made at the November meeting. President Marlene also announced that the annual craft sale would happen at the November meeting. There will be wreaths, jewelry, handmade linen items, and more. The sale could also include items which are in good shape. Each member will be able to keep the proceeds from whatever they sell. Lodge 92 will be hosting the Second Annual Arts and Crafts and Trade Days on November 21 and 22. The event will be held indoors. Outside vendors are welcome, and the public is invited. For details, call Gloria Farek (817) 229-8515. Birthday celebrants attending were Janet Basham, Norma McLendon, Mary Paredes, Raquel Paredes, and Bill Campbell. They were sung to, and their picture was taken. Other October birthdays were Mary Windham, Estelle Hurtik, and Monica Willenburg. We hope your day was great, and we wish you all many more “happies.” Hostesses were Gloria Farek (supervisor), Bessie Ellsworth, Lisa Ellsworth, Magda Kronenberger, Wanda Moree, and Garland Ellsworth. They set up a great assortment for all

to enjoy. My personal favorite this month was meatballs. I could not stop eating them. I bet I ate about . . . mm-m-m . . . 10. No wonder I can’t lose weight. Wow, there were 15 door prizes, and, of course, not one came home with me, but that’s okay. I have everything I need or ever wanted. Life is good, and just sharing with others makes my heart glad. The meeting closed with Vice President Theretta Praslicka sharing a couple of really cute stories and the blessing for lunch. Bingo followed lunch which was difficult without a microphone. Thanks to Lisa Juran for the great job she does calling those numbers each month. We appreciate all that you do. Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

State Youth Director shares November updates
Dear Youth Leaders, November is here! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! To those of you who will be traveling during over Thanksgiving, may your journeys be joyous and safe. The year really seemed to zoom by! Now is the time for families to come together and be thankful for what is important — good health, relationships, and life’s simple blessings. This is also the time of the year our youth can make a big difference in someone else’s life. There are many families having a hard time making ends meet. Youth leaders, consider challenging your youth to help out a family in need in the local community, helping stock your local food pantry, helping an elderly neighbor, or assisting your local Salvation Army with its Red Kettle Christmas Drive.
Vestnik Projects I applaud the youth leaders who are currently taking the time to share and review the Vestnik Projects with youth club members during their meetings. If this is something you have not incorporated into your meeting, I suggest that you consider sharing the monthly Vestnik Projects before, during, or after the youth club meeting. This month’s Vestnik Project is about “growing an attitude of gratitude.” With Thanksgiving coming up, it is easy to be thankful for our family, friends, and the many blessings we all have in our lives. Challenge your youth members to list at least three of
life’s simple pleasures they are thankful for each day during the month of November like the birds in the sky, the beat to your favorite song, or a hug from a special person. It can be easier
to give to others when we are appreciative for the wonderful things in our own lives — no matter how large or small.
SPJST’s last “Call In” Youth Club Meeting November 3 was our last call-in meeting. During the 2014 Fall District Youth Counselor Meeting, it was decided to discontinue the call-in meetings. Please know that if your youth club members need to “make up” any youth meetings, they can do so by attending another club meeting. For more information, please contact your District Youth Counselor.
“Step Up To The Plate 2014” Membership Drive Even if your youth club has not yet achieved its “Step Up To The Plate” goal, there’s still time! SPJST Scholarships and Leadership Grants All members who are high school seniors are encouraged to apply for the SPJST General Scholarship and Leadership Grant. Undergraduates are encouraged to apply for the General Scholarship. Please, remember that you need to be an active youth club member to apply for the Leadership Grant. For more information or for applications, please call Sandra Dubcak in the Fraternal Department. Completed scholarship applications and related application materials must be postmarked on or before February 1, 2015.
Vestnik Project Due Dates Keep those Vestnik Projects coming in on time. This is a simple way to make sure each youth club member receives the points that he/she deserves. I would like to commend the vast majority of you for getting the Vestnik Projects in on time. Keep up the good work! October Vestnik Projects are due on November 15. November Vestnik Projects are due on December 15. December Vestnik Projects are due on January 15.
Quarterly and Merit Reports Due December 15 Please make every effort to submit your quarterly and merit reports before December 15. This is the second quarterly report for September, October, and November. Those of you that email the electronic quarterly report into the youth office need to submit the sign-in sheet with the electronic file. This took the place of the youth having to initial the paper quarterly report. You can send the sign-in sheet by scanning the page, mailing, or faxing to my office. The fax number for the Fraternal Department is (254) 7747447. These reports help to determine the funding your youth club will receive at the spring meeting and how much money your district receives for its youth activities. Youth clubs that do not submit their quarterly and merit reports on time will lose out on their incentives. This can mean losing hundreds of dollars for your youth club.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive This year’s goal is to raise $20,000. This is in addition to the allocation which the Supreme Lodge has made. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Thanks to all of the young people and youth clubs who contribute to this wonderful program. If you have not contributed in the past, please consider doing so this year. Remember that no contribution is too big or small. All young people who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All young people who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. Veterans Day Please take time and remember our
Veterans at your next youth club meeting in November. Veterans Day is Tuesday, November 11.
LIT Tree Planting Service Project November 15 On Saturday, November 15, I would like to invite all Leaders-inTraining to join in planting 10 trees at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. has generously offered to open the high ropes course for all those in attendance. So many of our youth members have been fortunate enough to have been able to enjoy the high ropes course since the day it was built. Many members from the Un-Included Club have never seen a ropes course much less have had the opportunity to participate on one. This should be a memorable experience for all those involved. I will be driving the SPJST van and am willing to work out a pick up/drop off schedule with those who are interested in attending this event. This will be a day that is about giving back to nature and to others. Please know that this is a volunteer activity, and these hours can be counted towards the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth places at cross country meet
How to give back to veterans
Dear Vestnik Editor, Our district cross country meet was on October 22, 2014. I led our junior high team with a time of 15:08 and a place of sixth out of the eighth grade girls. Our team got third place with a total of 59 points. The seventh grade girls’ team did not place, but one of the girls got ninth place. This was our last meet, so we broke it out on the bus one last time. This was a really sad breakout, because I realized we will never be on the same bus with the same people again. Fraternally, Kelly House —SPJST—
Members of the military serve their country proudly, often sacrificing the luxuries of home and time spent with their families to do so. When veterans return home from training or deployment, many people want to show how much they appreciate the sacrifices made by the men and women of the military, but don’t know the best way to share that appreciation. Donations to a veterans’ charity is one measure of support the public can offer. Many charities work to serve the needs of veterans. The Wounded Warrior Project provides rehabilitation, counseling and activities for veterans who were wounded during service, while Homes for Our Troops remodels homes or builds them for troops who were injured and need their homes remodeled as a result of their injuries. The USO provides a variety of services for veterans and can always use donations or volunteers. Another way to help veterans is to assist with their pets. Some dogs and cats get left behind when troops are deployed or forced to move. Volunteering to foster a pet until a soldier returns is another way to give back. Some military service dogs can be injured or traumatized during battle. Working dogs can be rehabilitated or adopted upon returning home. According to the organization Veterans, Inc., veterans are more at risk of
VӖSTNÍK
becoming homeless than those who do not serve in the military. Some causes of homelessness include lack of education and transferable skills after returning from military life. Physical and mental health issues can make finding work challenging. Some veterans may cope with trauma resulting from their deployment by leaning on drugs and alcohol, and that can interfere with their ability to get and/or keep jobs. Individuals can help veterans by opening their homes to friends and family members who may need a temporary place to stay. Encourage veterans to embrace job training programs or seek therapy if necessary. Providing support to military personnel both past and present can mean a world of difference. Correspond with veterans through mail, email or text messages. Operation American Soldier establishes connections between civilians and troops so that all soldiers receive daily mail, whether it's a care package or letter of thanks. Other simple ways people can give back to troops is to personally thank them for serving their country. Share time with veterans and ask to spend time listening to their stories and experiences. —SPJST—

SPJST members, friends celebrate Czech Heritage Month at svacina
An enthusiastic crowd of approximately 114 svačina enthusiasts turned out for the "Czech Svačina Night” on Thursday, October 23, 2014, at SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas. The event was co-sponsored by SPJST Home Office and Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple. The tradition of svacina can be traced back hundreds of years to the Czech lands of Moravia and Bohemia. The word itself — pronounced “svahchee-nah” is derived from the old Czech word “svac” which meant a get-together of friends or acquaintances. Guests arrived early and stayed late for the program which commenced with — what else — svačina! The Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST express thanks to the attendees who contributed items to the wonderful assortment of sweets, meats, and veggie and fruit trays. A musical backdrop of polka and waltz music by Texas bands added to the festive atmosphere. Featured co-host for this installment of the “All Things Czech” series, was Carol White, owner and operator of Kolache Kitchen in Temple, Texas. For her part, Ms. White demonstrated the award-winning kolache baking techniques that she acquired as a little girl watching her grandmother bake in the kitchen.

By all accounts, the pastry was delicious — and, we’re hoping — a soon-to-beadded addition to Kolache Kitchen’s menu.
