Holidays are almost here!
Can you believe the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are al-
most here? Due to the Thanksgiving holidays, the deadline for the December 3 Vestnik will be Monday, November 24 at 2 p.m. Please make a note of this, and be sure to send your items in early.
Holidays Usually Mean Onions! The holidays include cooking and preparing great dishes for family and friends. And, usually onions are a part of that process. I hate onions, and I hate preparing them even more! But, it seems like I always become the designated onion slicer/preparer person . . . and they always make my eyes burn, hurt, and cry. So I did a little research. Biochemists say that cutting an onion releases enzymes that react with sulfur that’s from the soil where the onion grows, and boom, a gas is formed that irritates your eyes. Here are
ways you can lessen or stop the tears: Refrigerate the onion or put it in ice-water before cutting. By cooling, you slow the enzyme/sulfoxides reaction rate. Turn a fan on, blowing across the onion and away from you. Run water over the onion as you cut it. Get used to it. The more you cut up onions, the less the sulfuric compounds affect your eyes. I will be trying these tips soon!
Thinking of Brother Bob Our thoughts continue to be with District Seven Director Bob Bayer. Brother Bob was released from the hospital last week after hip replacement surgery the previous week. He was transferred to a facility for a few days of rehab. Hopefully, he will be home soon and on his way to a complete recovery. Take care, Bob, and get well soon. —SPJST—

From the Supreme Lodge Vice President
Insurance Department Seeks Sales Representatives
Hello again, Vestnik Readers! Last week, I was happy to introduce myself to you so that you could get a little better understanding of who I am and express a little of what SPJST means to me. This week, I am writing to ask you for a favor. As Vice President, I am responsible for the SPJST Insurance Department. We are looking for some talented people to join us as life insurance sales representatives, and I would appreciate your input. If you are interested or know of someone who would be a good sales representative for us, could you please give them my email address
(cliftonc@spjst.com) and have them shoot me an email? I am so excited about SPJST continuing to grow and develop in the community. My vision is for all of the members to see SPJST (if it isn’t for you yet) as being part of your extended family. While insurance may not always be what you think of first at SPJST, we will be there for you when you need us. Fraternally, Clifton Coufal Supreme Lodge Vice President —SPJST—

oversees the preparation and consideration of government business. In addition to the generous donation made by the Czech government, the Czech Republic has made its presence felt in West several times over the past year. In addition to official visits made by Czech officials, a contest organized by the Czech Embassy in cooperation with the West long-term recovery effort and local schools in which school children were invited to write about “What It Means to Be Czech.” The contest winners received a trip to the Czech Republic.
In conjunction with groundbreaking ceremonies, the historic event will include a tribute to the 12 first responders who lost their lives in the explosion. The final portion of the program will recognize Honorary Consul General Ray Snokhous of West for more than 20 years of dutiful service to the Czech government as consul. SPJST President Brian Vanicek of Temple will be designated as the incoming Honorary Consul. “SPJST and the Sokol gymnastics organization share a cooperative history that spans the generations,” says President Vanicek. “The groundbreaking for the new gymnasium and proposed community center begins an exciting new chapter in that relationship.” —SPJST—

Lodge Incentive Guidelines
Beginning in 2014, the scope of SPJST’s longstanding Premium Refund Program will be expanded to incorporate the Membership Program incentives, dramatically simplifying the program and compensating lodges on the basis of the premium income generated by the lodge.
The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:
1. $1 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80 percent of the lodge’s annual earned premium. To receive the Enhanced Pre-
mium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria: 1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program. 2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.
3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.
For Lodge Incentive updates, please contact the Financial Secretary’s Department. —SPJST—

Sunday, November 2, 2014 • Seaton Star Hall in Seaton, Texas shaded park to the north! It’s an impressive property that truly supports the fraternal purpose of SPJST. And that purpose — found on page two of our By-Laws — is as follows: “This Society promotes providing a wholesome family environment for the entire family unit . . . and keeping alive and encouraging the cherished traditions of the Czech history, culture, heritage, and family.” The pavilion is another jewel in Lodge 47, Seaton’s crown. It sends a powerful message to the community — and for that matter — to the state — that SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton is the real deal when it comes to fraternal commitment. It represents devotion, dedication, and commitment to meeting the needs of the members and the community — today as well as to-

morrow. What brings great character to this project is the tremendous hand that members had in the design, oversight, and construction of the pavilion. In visiting with Brother President Edwin Pechal, he characterizes the pavilion as a team effort on the part of current lodge officers, trustees, and active members. Even so — and I know this from watching this project grow from its inception — I know that there were great leaders on this team. Legacy fraternalists like the Pechal brothers — Edwin, Donald, and David — as well as Brandon Bartek . . . These four gentlemen oversaw much of the subcontracting leading to the finished structure . . . Brother David Pechal, I know, has
an intimate knowledge of every scoop of gravel, dirt, and asphalt that had to be dug and hauled offsite in order to enable the construction of the pavilion’s foundation. There were others, too, fraternal brothers like Albert Koslovsky, who handled the plumbing; as well as Ricky and Heath Novosad and Amos Electric who provided their electrical engineering expertise. The extraordinary generosity and dedication of these named individuals combined with the efforts of active members made it possible. Every person who worked in any way toward seeing this pavilion become a reality did so because of a caring heart. On behalf of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, thank you. You have our ut-

How about a round of applause for everyone who had a hand in contributing to whatever they could and whenever they could to make this pavilion a reality! Fraternalism — just like love and family relationships — has the capacity to reach across time and space — even across the divide of death. May this addition and indeed the entire SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton property serve as a guidepost to all present today — as well as those in future generations — that fraternalism — doing for each other and for the community — is a blessing that we have the ability to confer upon ourselves by our actions. In dedicating the pavilion, lodge members are carrying on the tradition of the lodge’s forefathers who organ-

They called their lodge Hvezda Texasu — or “Star of Texas.” The first lodge hall was built on this site in 1905. It was later remodeled in 1937. The main body of the present lodge hall was built in 1963 and since that time, numerous upgrades and improvements were made to the property ... Show of hands . . . How many were here that day? I can’t say that I remember much, but I’ve been told that I was here. I was three. And time marches on . . . So many of those who were so responsible, so devoted, and so dedicated to this idea of fraternalism and service to each other and to this community are no longer with us today. May they rest in peace. But you

In a very real way, it validates the noble, fraternal purpose that Lodge 47, Seaton members have been filling for more than a century. I said it’s a nod to the past? It also represents seeds planted for fraternalists of the future. (Perhaps some one, two-, or three-year-olds in the crowd today.) I have every reason to believe it shall be the site of many happy celebrations and community events in the future that will create wonderful family memories . . . Bremond, Texas . . . 1974, 2011, and 2014 by Reverend Bob Uzzel of Lodge 6, Cottonwood
Bremond is a city in Robertson County, Texas, named for Paul Bremond (1810-1885), an entrepreneur and the founder of the Houston, East and West Texas Railroad who owned the surrounding land. The town was established in 1869 and, during the decade of the 1870s, a large number of Polish immigrants came to the area to grow cotton. At the time of the 2010 United States Census, the local population was 929. Since 1978, the community’s biggest event has been Polski Dzien (Polish Festival Days) during the last weekend of June. I visited Bremond for the first time during the fall of 1974. At the time, I was living in Waco, working at Behren’s Inc. (a wholesale drug distributing company), and working on my master’s thesis at Baylor University. I had applied for a job with the Texas Department of Public Welfare (now Health and Human Services). The supervisor’s office was in Franklin, the county seat of Robertson County, but, due to my work schedule, she agreed to interview me at night at the Bremond furniture store that she and her husband operated. I do not remember the exact date of this interview nor do I have a picture from this occasion. The position was in financial services, and the supervisor felt that I would do better in social services. Thus, I was not selected for that particular position. However, on December 1, I was hired for a social service position with the same agency in Teague. I visited Bremond for the second time on November 5, 2011, to attend the premier of the film “The Waltz to Westphalia” by producer/musician Joe
Weed at the Texas Slav and German Boutique. Owners of the latter establishment sometimes have a booth at the National Polka Festival in Ennis. This documentary concerns Pytala Się Pani, a Polish folk tune. Evidence indicates that fiddler Cotton Collins of the Lone Star Playboys of Waco first heard the tune performed at Bremond by Polish musicians from Chicago. On October 6, 1946, he performed it at a dance held following the wedding of Herbert and Flora Herzog at the parish hall of the Church of the Visitation in Westphalia, Falls County, Texas. Collins called it the “No Name Waltz.” Someone at the dance suggested that it be called the “Westphalia Waltz.” With country music’s huge popularity after World War II, recording stars brought Collins’ renamed tune to the national stage. Now, more than half a century later, the “Westphalia Waltz” is standard for fiddlers across the United States.
I visited Bremond for the third time on July 19, 2014, to attend the WallaceWoodard Reunion. Anthony Haynes, who has roots in Bremond, is married to Teresa Bass Haynes, the sister of my wife Debra Bass Uzzel. Anthony and I stopped at the Texas Slav and German Boutique en route to the Abraham Building, a community center where the family reunion was held. Anthony’s grandparents were Ezekiel and Willie Wasdon Woodard Wallace. His great-grandparents were John Simon and Maude Victoria Nelms Woodard. His great-great-grandparents were Pete and Sylvia Woodard. The Woodard family is related by marriage to the Durham family, and many Woodards are mentioned in my soon-to-be released book The Durhams of Fairfield: An African American Genealogy. Everyone seemed to enjoy the reunion and look forward to such events in the future. —SPJST—

Grandpa’s Gone Dedicated to Zeke Kollman By d.knape

Eulogy for Chris Kyle By d.knape
There was a soldier, one Chris Kyle whose face embraced a winning smile, to aid someone, he’d walk a mile helping others, just his style American Sniper, is how he was known his accuracy expertly honed, he fought Al Qaeda all alone aced every target he was shown
Yet Kyle was larger than most men everyone he met became his friend,
his efforts went to helping them till his last breath, untimely end
As tragic as his passing was he would forgive, well just because that’s just the way a soldier does there was no limit to his love
Some do not know or comprehend how bravery can shape a man, a soldier he, right from the start yet how selflessly he shared his heart
Few of us have known the strife Chris Kyle did in his shortened life, how large the footprints of this man few try to fill, but fewer can. —SPJST—

Ellen Kucera of Lodge 153, La Salle Achieves the Grand Age of 96
SPJST congratulates Sister Ellen Mildred Venglar Kucera, a member of SPJST Lodge 153, La Salle, who celebrated her 96th birthday on November 9, 2014. As such, Sister Kucera is entitled to all SPJST benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Ellen was born November 11, 1918, in Inez, Texas, to the late John and Mary Machicek Venglar. She married John Steve Kucera on November 2, 1937, at the Assumption Catholic Church in Ganado. After 43 years of marriage, she lost John to cancer on August 29, 1980. Ellen and John were blessed with six wonderful children - Clarence, Herman, William (Billy Jo), Larry, Charles, and Mildred. All are deceased except Charles. He and his wife Billie live in Inez. Ellen has three daughtersin-law still living - Robbie Kucera of Sour Lake, Linda Matula Kucera of Wood-Hi, and Lou Ann Kucera of Del Rio. Ellen and John were hardworking farmers, raising milo, corn, and cotton. They raised a few cattle, hogs, and chickens. Ellen always had a beautiful garden and flowers. Ellen’s fondest memories are her children, 14 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. She is a member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in La Salle and the
Altar Society. Ellen loved to fish, raise her garden, and grow beautiful flowers. Her greatest accomplishment was learning how to drive at a late age. She would take her husband’s coffee out to the field. After his death, Ellen continued to drive herself to Vanderbilt to Teresa’s Beauty Salon every Friday, and every day to Charlie and Martha Sembera’s store to get the mail and a few groceries—all without ever obtaining a driver’s license . . . and never getting caught by the law. The good Lord was definitely looking after her. Ellen has two younger sisters who are still living - Leona Darling of Columbus, Indiana, and Lilly Walker of Robstown, Texas. Brothers Jasper, George, and Emil Venglar and sisters Clara Etzel and Bernice Pecha are deceased. Ellen became a member of SPJST on November 9, 1956, at the age of 38. Ellen lived in La Salle for almost 50 years before moving to Inez to be closer to her son Charles. She now is a resident of Southbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation in Edna. We congratulate Sister Ellen Mildred Venglar Kucera again for attaining the Grand Age of 96 and being a member of SPJST for all these years. Thank you, Sister Kucera! —SPJST—

We feared that he would not pull through despite our efforts, the virus grew no medication that we knew no family to explain it to

Lodge 169, Brenham member Jim Rothermel enjoys D.C. trip to World War II Memorial Brenham Banner-Press • Monday, May 12, 2014 Reprinted with permission.
Jim Rothermel, who served with the U.S. Navy’s Seabees in the Pacific War invasions of Guadalcanal (1942) and Okinawa (1945), reports he greatly enjoyed being one of 60 World War II veterans taking part in an Honor Flight Austin twoday trip on May 2 to 3, 2014, to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Each veteran on the trip was assigned an Honor Flight Austin guardian to assist them, and knowledgeable tour guides were provided, as the veterans toured the Washington Mall’s newest memorial then continued on to visit the Lincoln/Vietnam/Korean Memorials, Arlington Cemetery, and others. Dorothy Ann Rothermel - the couple celebrated 67 years of marriage in August - urged her husband “to apply for this once-in-a-lifetime trip”and filled out his application for the Honor
Flight Austin trip in February. They were surprised and pleased to receive word there was a spot for the 95-year-old Rothermel on the May 2 to 3 Southwest Airlines weekend trip. The couple also said they’ve been told Korean War veterans have now become eligible for some Honor Flight programs, and would tell any veteran interested it’s certainly worthwhile to inquire about the application process.
Editor’s Note: Brother Jim and his wife Dorothy are both members of SPJST Lodge 169, Brenham. Thanks to Lodge 169 for sharing this article from Brenham Banner-Press. Lodge 169 Vice President Dorothy Strickland writes, “This was a very high honor for Jim to be included in this wonderful experience, and we congratulate him.” —SPJST—

How Old Is Grandma?
17
Lodge 179, Warrenton Honors Czech Heritage Month
Submitted by Jerry Milan Lodge 154, Fort Worth
One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general. The grandmother replied, “Well, let me think a minute. I was born before television was a prominent fixture in homes, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, and Frisbees. There were no credit cards, laser beams or ballpoint pens. Man had not yet invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air, and man hadn’t yet walked on the moon. Your grandfather and I got married first, and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, “Sir.” And, after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, “Sir.” We were before computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.
In honor of Czech Heritage Month in Texas, fruit kolaches were served at Lodge 179, Warrenton’s October 2014 meeting. All enjoyed the food and fellowship. LEFT PHOTO: Pictured are Roy Goehring, Ora Lee Levien, and Melissa Wickel. RIGHT PHOTO: Left to right are Roy Goehring, Ora
We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your family. Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends — not purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.

If you saw anything with “Made in Japan” on it, it was junk. Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had five-and-dime stores where you could actually buy things for five and 10 cents. Ice cream cones, phone calls, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And, if you didn’t want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards. You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad . . . because gas was 11 cents a gallon.
In my day, “grass” was mowed, “coke” was a cold drink, “pot” was something your mother cooked in, and “rock music” was your grandmother’s lullaby. “Aids” were helpers in the principal’s office, “hardware” was found in a hardware store, and “software” wasn’t even a word. We were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. We volunteered to protect our precious country. No wonder people call us “old and confused” and say there is a generation gap.

To Those Of Us Born 1925 to 1970 Submitted by Mary Ann Kieschnick Lodge 142, Houston
To all the kids who survived the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s . . . First, we survived being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then, after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored, lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets, and, when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps, not helmets, on our heads. As infants and children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes. Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And we weren’t overweight. Why? Because we were always outside playing . . . that’s why! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day . . . and, we were okay. We would spend hours building our
go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes.. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We did not have Play Stations, Nintendos, and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVDs, no surround-sound or CDs, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet, and no chat rooms. We had friends, and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broken bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from those accidents. We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand, and no one would call child services to report abuse. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls, and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, and inventors ever. The past 50 to 85 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success, and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If you are one of those born between 1925 and 1970, congratulations! —Author Unknown —SPJST—

District Seven Queen rides SPJST Float with duchess
Give me a reason to spend time with my District Seven Duchess Rileigh Kitchen, and I’m there. When our Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club planned to host the SPJST Float for the Pleasanton Cowboy Homecoming parade, I immediately wanted to invite Rileigh. Luckily, she was able to join me for the festivities. She was a delight to have with me on the float, and she perfected her royal wave during the parade. Having a beautiful, outgoing duchess to accompany me, is like being with the little sister I’ve never had. I’m grateful that she enjoys fulfilling her role and that her parents encourage and support her royalty activities. Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard Lodge 202, Jourdanton —SPJST—

Old business was the Beseda Fun Day in the Austin area on October 11. October 25 was Make a Difference Day. We are collecting items to take to Churches Touching Lives for Christ (CTLC) on November 15 at 10 a.m. I would really like to have a nice turnout that day. Please mark the date on your calendar. If you have not brought items yet, please bring them that day. We need your help. And for the ones who brought items, I would like to give you a big thank you. This is what being a member of SPJST is all about - doing for others. The location is 702 West Avenue G - the old David’s Supermarket. On October 25, we had a dance with the Red Ravens. I would like to thank all the workers from that night: the Zavodnys - Elden, Becky, and Julia; the Porubskys - Danny, Michelle, Payton, and Morgan; the Martinezes - Tammy and Seth; and Charlie Mitchan and Justin Kraatz. We sold hamburgers. Thanks to the board members, we gave out kolaches at one of the band’s breaks. Everyone enjoyed them. Kids who went to the Czech Heritage Museum for Czech Heritage Month were Angelina Ringwald, Justin Kraatz, and Jamie Bostick.
They all won prizes for going and participating in the scavenger hunt. After the monthly meeting on November 2, we had the ribbon cutting and dedication of the outdoor pavilion. We had 13 area musicians perform. They sounded great. Thanks to all the kitchen help from the Ringwalds, the Pechals, Kyndall Carroll, and the Barteks. Everybody had a great time. Watch for pictures in the Věstník.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Enjoys District Fall Fun Day
This year’s District Seven Fall Fun Day was as exciting as ever. The usual fun and games including bunco, 42 dominoes, and horseshoe tournaments were enjoyed throughout the day. Contests for attendees ages 16 years old included cupcake baking, kolache baking, and needlework. I entered my cross-stitched coin purse that I originally made for Youth Achievement Day and won third place. My grandmother Bettie House brought home the top prize with her pineapple kolaches. Way to go, Grandma! The youth participated in the Christmas ornament contest. I made Olaf, one of the characters from Frozen. Although my craftsmanship still has a long way to go, this Olaf likes warm hugs just the same. There were many creative entries.

Diana Wilson všechny přítomné přivítala a uvedla pořad a organisaci oslavy.
Tajemník nadace Paul Hlavinka přečetl zápis z července roku 2014 a zároveň zápis ze schůze našeho dohlížecího výboru s vedením Severotexaské university.

nutno rozšířit počet ředitelů a úředníků ,aby nadace mohla pracovat. Christmas Ornament Legends
By Charlene Hurta of SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy Texas Czech Genealogical Society President
As Christmas trees are decorated in the upcoming weeks, most people never give the origin of ornaments a thought. However, did you know that well over 100 ornaments have some sort of legend or tradition behind them? Early trees—those of our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents—were adorned with candles and perhaps fruit or nuts. Later came chains of popcorn; and later yet, chains made of colorful construction paper made by children in school. Blown ornaments were first blown in the 1500s by Hans Greiner in Lauscha, Germany. Since that time many countries, including the Czech Republic, began producing beautiful ornaments of their own. My favorite ornament legend, probably be- Christmas Spider ornacause it was the first one I learned of, is that of ment produced in the the Christmas Spider. Most ornament legends Czech Republic in the point to the birth of Jesus or have a religious early 1980s. meaning behind them. Through the years, the legend as I first knew it from my grandmother has changed considerably. Originally, it went . . . Many years ago, a very poor Czech mother was very sad as the next morning was Christmas, and she would have no gift for her children. She cried and prayed all night, and when the early daylight sun woke the children as it shined through their window, they ran downstairs to see their surprise. The mother tried to stop them, but their babbling, laughter and excitement was too much for her. The babbling was so fast that she could not understand them, but the sparkle in their eyes immediately caught her attention. It seems as if a spider had made a large web in a tree just outside the window. As the sun shined on the web, it glistened so brightly the children thought they had received a special Christmas treat. The Lord had answered the mother’s prayers by giving her children something she could not. The Christmas Spider ornament is always hung in the middle of our Legend Tree. New visitors to our home during the Christmas season cannot resist and always ask, “Why a spider?” This opens the door to tell them how the Lord answered prayers. While I have not seen an ornament as the one produced in the 1980s in a number of years, the Texas Czech Genealogical Society does have a spider ornament available for $8 in our office located downstairs in the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Contact Nancy Machu at nbmachu@aol.com or phone her at (512) 281-1559 for more information. Have a most blessed CHRISTmas. —SPJST—
