hanks to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi President Mark Rebecek for sharing this very important message. At birth, we boarded the train of life and met our parents, and we believed they would always travel on by our side. However, at some station, our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone. As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant, i.e., our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of our life. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don’t realize they vacated their seats. This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells. Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves.
T
The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty, we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life. —Author Unknown
I wish you a joyful journey on the train of life. Reap much success, give lots of love, and spread fraternalism! More importantly, thank God for the journey that you are on. Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passengers on my train!

Cynthia Hutka Named Insurance Operations Manager
A new position of Insurance Operations Manager was created in business conducted during the Supreme Lodge Special Meeting held September 17, 2014, at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Cynthia Hutka was promoted by the Supreme Lodge to serve in the new position. With 28 years of SPJST Home Office and Insurance Department background, Cynthia will oversee daily operations of the SPJST Insurance Department Staff. Cynthia, a member of Lodge 47, Seaton, joined the SPJST Insurance Department in 1986 as a data entry clerk under the supervision of Vice President Bernie Gebala. “SPJST is my second home,” Cynthia says. “It’s a great
place to work. We have a lot of good members who place tremendous faith in SPJST. I will do everything that I can to ensure that trust and to build upon it.” Following Brother Gebala’s death in 1993, Cynthia worked under the supervision of Vice President Leonard Mikeska and — since 2000 — under the direction of Vice President Gene McBride, serving as Executive Assistant to the Vice President. After Brother McBride’s retirement in March 2014, she served as Interim Vice President. Best wishes to Sister Cynthia in her new position. —SPJST—

Lodge 191, Lufkin reports on activities
If you missed the Halloween dance at the regular third Friday night dance, you missed seeing ghosts, witches, clowns, and all kinds of ghostly characters. Glenn Lenderman and Friends did an excellent job of playing good dance music as usual. Thanks to all the good cooks who brought food for the food table. There was plenty of food, and what else could you ask for besides good music and good food. Also, thanks to Kathy Riley, Ruth Welch, and Lois St. John for all of the Halloween decorations. You all did a great job of making everything look like a ghost house. The winner of the 50-50 drawing was Pat Zanover, and the tickets to any dance but New Year’s Eve were won by Rita Havard and Ken St. Ama. Congratulations to all of these winners. The other 50 percent goes to the scholarship fund for SPJST. These scholarships are given each year to seniors or college students that parents or grandparents are members of the SPJST lodge. So you might want to think about becoming a regular member by buying a life insurance certificate or depositing money into an annuity or IRA account. The dance lessons that were spon-

Eulogy for Chris Kyle By d.knape
There was a soldier, one Chris Kyle whose face embraced a winning smile, to aid someone, he’d walk a mile helping others, just his style American Sniper, is how he was known his accuracy expertly honed,
he fought Al Qaeda all alone aced every target he was shown
Yet Kyle was larger than most men everyone he met became his friend, his efforts went to helping them till his last breath, untimely end
As tragic as his passing was he would forgive, well just because that's just the way a soldier does there was no limit to his love
Some do not know or comprehend how bravery can shape a man, a soldier he, right from the start yet selflessly he shared his heart
Few of us have known the strife Chris Kyle did in his shortened life, how large the footprints of this man few try to fill, but fewer can.
* Chris Kyle was a U.S. Navy Seal. He was known as The American Sniper, being the most lethal sniper in American military history. He served four tours in Iraq and was wounded twice and was involved in six IED attacks. For his service, he was awarded numerous medals for bravery and meritorious service. His funeral service was attended by more than 10,000 people. He was buried in the Texas National Cemetery in Austin, Texas. An honor befitting this man of valor whose kindness touched so many lives. © david knape —SPJST—

What Texans should know about providing their Social Security number
According to the Federal Trade Commission, Texas ranks eighth in the nation for identity theft complaints. In 2013, more than 23,000 Texans were identity theft victims and as a result, lost thousands of dollars and hours of time attempting to correct their credit ratings and personal financial history. Identity theft occurs when a criminal illegally uses someone else’s personal information – a name, address, driver’s license number, credit or debit card account number or Social Security number – to commit fraud or other crimes. Fortunately, increased identity theft awareness has made Texans much more cautious about freely providing their personal information. One particularly sensitive part of a person’s identity is his or her Social Security number (SSN). Many Texans call the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) to ask when and where they are required to give out their SSN. One of our most commonly received questions on this subject is, “Can a private business ask for my Social Security number?” Generally, the answer is yes. The law does not prohibit a business from asking for a person’s SSN; however, the customer has options and does not have to provide that information. Texans are not legally required to provide their SSN to private businesses unless the transaction is one which triggers mandatory Internal Revenue Service notification. Texans should be aware, though, that businesses can refuse to provide products or services to customers who fail to provide their SSN. If a business insists that customers provide their SSN and customers feel this is not justified, customers may want to ask for a supervisor or manager to discuss the situation. If the company is unwilling to budge, Texans may want to consider taking their business elsewhere. Be aware that while federal law does not forbid a business from asking for a person’s SSN, it does mandate that the business protect any numbers it collects. People who provide their SSN to a private business should familiarize themselves with the company’s privacy policy. Texas law also requires that businesses safeguard their clients’

sensitive personal information, including names, addresses, financial information and SSN. The OAG has charged several commercial vendors with unlawfully failing to protect such information. Many Texans also inquire about government agencies and whether they have the right to ask for a person’s SSN. Federal law does compel government agencies to ask for a SSN in certain instances. For example, certain government agencies, including taxing authorities, human resource offices and departments of motor vehicles, can require a SSN as mandated by federal law. Federal law does provide protections when citizens are required to divulge their SSN. The Privacy Act of 1974 requires that all government agencies that request Social Security numbers provide a disclosure statement on the form. The statement explains whether citizens are required to provide their SSN or if it is optional. Additionally, the document details how a person’s SSN will be used. The Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the U. S. Office of Management and Budget provides guidance and oversight regarding the Privacy Act of 1974. Interested Texans may read the Act on the U.S. Department of Justice Web site at www.usdoj.gov. The Privacy Act also provides that citizens cannot be denied government benefits or services if they refuse to disclose their SSN – if the disclosure is not required by federal law or if the disclosure is to an agency which has been using SSNs prior to January 1975. Time to talk turkey
(MS) Few foods receive the fanfare of turkey come the holiday season. The National Turkey Federation says Americans eat 46 million turkeys each Thanksgiving and another 22 million on Christmas. An additional 19 million enjoy turkey as part of their Easter celebrations. Though turkey is enjoyed throughout the year, it is most popular during the holiday season. Some celebrants may want to know more about this beloved bird before sinking their teeth into their next holiday meal. The following turkey tidbits may surprise you.
• Turkeys are large game birds that are closely related to chickens, pheasants and quail.
• The turkey’s scientific name is “meleagris gallopavo,” which is the wild turkey from which the domesti-
cated turkey many people eat descends. There is another species of turkey known as the ocellated turkey, which is native to the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico.
• By the early 1900s, the wild turkey neared extinction. Restoration projects have increased the number of turkeys from approximately 30,000 birds back then to nearly seven million now.
• Despite their size, turkeys can fly in the wild. They often perch in trees to sleep to protect themselves from predators. Some domesticated turkeys may not fly because they have been bred to be overly large to produce more breast meat. • The heaviest turkey ever raised was 86 pounds.
• A male turkey is called a “tom” or a “gobbler,” while female turkeys are referred to as “hens.” Only the male will make the familiar gobbling sound, which is used to attract mates. • A hen is smaller than a gobbler and

does not have the distinctive beard of modified feathers that gobblers have on their breasts. Males also have sharp spurs on their legs for fighting. • Male and female turkeys also can be differentiated by their droppings. Male droppings are spiral-shaped, while females’ look like the letter J.
• Both genders of turkey have snoods (the dangling appendage on the face) as well as red wattles under their chins. • A hen can lay about 10 to 12 eggs over a period of two weeks. The eggs will incubate for 28 days before hatching. Baby turkeys are called “poults.”
• Turkeys and peacocks may look similar, but they are not closely related.
• Turkeys have excellent vision due to their eyes being located on the sides of their head. This gives the birds periscopic vision.
Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Members Make Kolaches, Christmas Cards
In honor of Czech Heritage Month, the youth decided that they wanted to learn how to make kolaches. Betty and Allis had four mixers going at one time so that each member could learn how to make kolaches from start to finish. Several flavors were made including strawberry cream cheese which seemed to be a big hit. Everyone took home the kolaches that they proudly made. A big thanks to Betty and Allis for the baking lesson!
The boys enjoyed a game of football as we waited for the kolaches to bake. We also made Christmas cards for the residents of the local nursing that we will take to them in December. See you next month! Fraternally yours, Rita Holland, Youth Leader —SPJST—

• The gizzard is a part of the turkey’s stomach that contains tiny stones that the bird has swallowed. The stones facilitate the digestion process.
• Benjamin Franklin did not support the bald eagle as the nation’s symbol, feeling the turkey would be a better choice. In a letter to his daughter, he wrote, “He [bald eagle] is a rank coward; the little king-bird, not bigger than a sparrow, attacks him boldly and drives him out of the district. For in truth, the turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America. Eagles have been found in all countries, but the turkey was peculiar to ours .”

Czechs to join in Sokol ground breaking Nov. 20
Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and Czech Ambassador to the United States Petr Gandalovic will be in West, Texas, this Thursday, November 20, 2014, to break ground for the new West Sokol gymnasium and meeting facility. They will be welcomed by Texas Governor Rick Perry, who will also be on the program. Lone Star Hall — West Sokol’s former home — was destroyed by the fertilizer plant explosion that rocked the Central Texas community on April 17, 2013. Sokol West purchased the property from SPJST Lodge 54, West in 2012. In response and as a show of unity for the hundreds of Texans of Czech descent who live in West, the government of the Czech Republic donated more than $200,000 to West Sokol to aid in the rebuilding of its gymnastics and community facility. The groundbreaking commences at 9 a.m. at the building site, 1201 North Davis, and the public is invited to attend. Attendees are strongly encouraged to arrive at least a half hour ahead of time to accommodate security protocol for the visiting Czech dignitary. Sobotka was elected Prime Minister on January 17 of this year by the Czech Parliament. As Prime Minister, he directs the work of the government and oversees the preparation and consideration of government business. In addition to the generous donation made by the Czech government, the Czech Republic has made its presence felt in West several times over the past year. In addition to official visits made by Czech officials, a contest organized by the Czech Embassy in cooperation with the West long-term recovery effort and local schools in which school children were invited to write about “What It Means to Be Czech.” The contest winners received a trip to the Czech Republic. Christmas Ornament Legends
By Charlene Hurta of SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy Texas Czech Genealogical Society President
The donkey ornament spans a space in time letting us know the Lord always has a place for us to serve, no matter what our age. This legend lets us tell the story of Jesus and His death on the cross (the reason for His birth) in a most unusual way, a way which will capture attention. There was a donkey about the time when Jesus was born that fell into a deep pit and because he was quite old, the owner decided the best thing to do was to just bury him. Knowing this would be difficult and a time consuming task, he enlisted the help of friends and neighbors. They went about digging up dirt, shovel by shovel, and tossing it into the pit on the donkey. Each time, the donkey would bray very loudly and shake off the dirt. The owner and his friends kept up their task; and determined, the donkey did as well. Soon the donkey had shaken off so much dirt he was able to walk out of what was to have been his tomb. Some years later, as the legend continues, this same donkey is the one Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. As Jesus walked to the cross, the donkey followed Him and watched from afar. Not being able to look at the agony Jesus was enduring, the donkey turned his back. As he did, the shadow of the cross fell upon him and unto this day some breeds of donkeys have a cross on their back. The beautiful, glass donkey ornament the Texas Czech Genealogical Society has available for $13 in our office located downstairs in the Home Office has the cross on his back. It will give you the opportunity to tell the full legend of Jesus and the Christmas Donkey in a special way. Contact Nancy Machu at nbmachu@aol.com or phone her at (512) 2811559 for more information. As the born Czech, I describe you a board in Bohemia, as I know it. At the preface I inform you that Czechs neither go dressed in festive garments, nor dance at music for days and nor exult on weekdays, and therefore nor consume koláče daily that are so popular in Texas. The socialist slogan „Bez práce nejsou koláce” (“no pain no gain”) however spur citizens to the industry in ČSSR before the Velvet Revolution i.e. before 1989. We eat regularly in Bohemia five times a day, if we have a time to eat and if something to a meal is.
1. The first meal names SNÍDANĚ (breakfast) mornings. Adult employed people have a breakfast from 500 to 530 o’clock forenoon a.m. Pupils of schools have breakfast from 700 to 730 hours. Breakfast composition: drink (e.g. warm white sweetened coffee, cocoa, tea); bread (rolls, wheatrye bread slices), butter, spread (fish’s one, egg’s one), cheese, pasty, jam, fruit and vegetables (apple, banana, pear, plums, cherries, strawberries, kohlrabi, carrot, pepper).
Houska se salamem
o’clock before 1989. Through employer paid “svačinářka woman” distributed “snack” to employees. E.g.: 2 rolls and 100 g vlašský salad; bun and 100 g ham (Czech salami, cheese, pastry); Russian egg. After the Velvet Revolution was a 15-minute pause on svačina for employees in concerns canceled. Youth take a similar svačina into school from home, or it buys in the canteen. Milk and dairy products financed through a state grants. (Note: Neither sauerkraut, nor cucumbers does not consume to the svačina as a separate dish. Nutrition advisors for svačina do not commend neither koláče, nor desserts, nor e.g. sausages.)
2. The second meal names PŘESNÍDÁVKA (popular said “forenoon svačina”). Employed people ate snacks at work-place from 900 to 915
3. The third meal is OBĚD. Employees (in the company canteen) and youth (in the school canteen) have oběd in time from 1130 to 1200 o’clock a.m. Oběd consists of soup (eg. vegetable one, beef broth with noodles, with liver noks), main dishes (eg. baked duck with sauerkraut and dumplings, pork roast packed steak with a potato’s mash, sirloin bake on a cream sauce with dumplings, curd dumplings with apricots), fruit, kompot, dessert (cake, koblihy). Drink: tea or mineral water.

4. The fourth meal is SVAČINA (popular name “afternoon snack”) at time from 1530 to1600 o’clock p.m. home (sooner) or in a transport medium on the way from the job today. Classic svačina is similar to a breakfast e.g.: sandwiches, a bun with a ham, a bread with a lard, tea, fruit juice, mineral water. People returning from work today in a hurry in the transport medium eat a hamburger or a pizza and drink to it Kofola from PET bottles without any society.
5. The fifth meal, VEČEŘE, consumes at time from 1730 to 1800 o’clock at home, has a similar composition as oběd, but it is modest, i.e. often without soup, no dessert. Example of quick warm večeře: Student’s omelet (toast with eggs), mushrooms with eggs, bramboráky, pancakes, hot sausages with mustard and bread. Drink: tea, milk, fruit juice. “Milk Bars” provided quick healthy nonalcoholic relay before 1989. Today fast food shops offers less healthy hamburgers and pizzas. —SPJST—

Texas Věstník’s readers originally from Bohemia will surely find interest in the existence of people originally from Texas living in Bohemia. One of these interesting people is Paul David McNulty. Andrew Grym made reportage with Paul and wrote an article about him in a Bohemian newspaper 5 plus 2; I completed his article a little and translated it into English and edited it for Věstník. Paul David McNulty was born in Texas on October 21, 1953, and has

Irish citizenship. Nineteen y e a r s ago, he moved to t h e Czech Republic to the village Divišov in the Middle-bohemian country and produces replicas of historical musical instruments, especially pianos. His instruments are already known worldwide. Viviana Sofronitsky, a piano virtuoso, perhaps was born in Russia. She has Canadian citizenship, and perhaps she has standing residence in Bulgaria. She is Paul's partner and lives with him in Divišov. This year, Paul McNulty completed work on one of his best instruments, a replica of the legendary Brahms’ piano STREICHER™ 1868. 3,000 hours. The sound of given piano is apparently excellent. Viviana Sofronitsky commands it. Piano price is high and moves in hundreds of thousands euros. The piano was sold to a customer in Australia. Paul uses the wood from Šumava on all replicas of historic pianos such as on this year’s finished one. Availability of quality wood and the skills of Bohemians were apparently the main reasons why Paul moved from Texas to the Czech Republic. (Notice: Šumava is a forested-range mountain on the southwest of Bohemia. Šumava’s National Park is the largest of four national parks in the ČR.) In conclusion, piano production has a long tradition in Bohemia. Pianos with the trade mark PETROF™ have been made in Hradec Králové since 1864.
