avid and I attended one of the nicest SPJST events on Sunday, November 16 at Lodge 1, Fayetteville. The lodge complex received its Official Texas Historical Marker. We enjoyed visiting with the members and learning so much about the very first SPJST lodge. I felt special just being in the same place that one of our SPJST founders J.R. Kubena, known as the “Daddy of SPJST,” served as the first president. It was also special to visit with J.R.’s granddaughter Patsy Pflughaupt, pictured above. It’s amazing to note that the hall was constructed just over a few months time. A committee was formed in a June 12, 1910, meeting. The committee’s purpose was to see that the lodge hall was built. The new hall was dedicated less than four months later—on October 2, 1910. Talk about dedication . . . and SPJST pride. My compliments to the members of Lodge 1 for their unwavering support of SPJST throughout the years. The Vestnik will be running a feature story filled with many photographs — both historical and current. Stay tuned.

Very Thankful Thanksgiving took on a whole new meaning this year as I am very thankful to be alive. Last week was a little rough. As we were completing one of the parade floats with the final touch placing Queen Elsa’s crown (from the movie Frozen) on her head at the very top of the float - I was coming down and missed the step - only to come tumbling and land face down into cold, hard, ungiving concrete. A little dazed along with a growing knot on my forehead and multiple bruises, I decided to shake it off and carry on. After all, I’m Czech - I’m a woman and I’m strong. I did carry on for the next day and a half . . . until the pain got a little too unbearable. So an ER visit determined that I have a fractured head, nose, and jaw which all should hopefully heal with time. Doctors say I am very lucky and the Good Lord was watching over me. I am very thankful it was not worse and that I will be able to carry on. Thanks for all of your prayers, thoughts, and well wishes. —SPJST—

Reader intrigued by “The 411 on Ghosts”

Dear Melanie Zavodny, I am writing you in response to the article “The 411 on Ghosts” which appeared in an October issue of the Vestnik and initialed by MS. Over the years, I have learned about such things from magazines, television, and radio news stories. However, the reason I am writing this letter is because about five years ago, a local real estate agent wrote a very long article in the then Taylor Daily Press about houses that she had for sale that were haunted. She described some of the activities which manifested in those houses. Her name is Janette Polach of Terra Properties, Inc. in Taylor, Texas. Happy Holidays! Sincerely, Frank L. I had known and worked with the seated Honorary Consul General Ray Snok-

hous and his wife, Clarice, for a number of years. They did an incredible job for more than 20 years,” he says. “I was notified in July 2013 that I had been identified as one of the individuals who had been observed as having the characteristics necessary to serve in this voluntary capacity. In that regard, being selected to serve as Honorary Consul has everything to do with SPJST and the tremendous history the Society has for promoting all things Czech.” Congratulations to Brother Vanicek, and best wishes in his position as Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic to the State of Texas. —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, November 13, 2014, in the Sokol Club Room for our Thanksgiving luncheon and meeting. We arrived at 8 a.m., stretched the Junior Sokol Polka Festival traveling fund quilt. We had quilters all around, 12 to be exact. Thank you all for coming early. We had a new lady, Lavina Patman. She has joined our Circle, and she wants to learn all about quilt-

ing. We are glad to have her. By lunchtime, we had 21 members and two guests - Joe and Jerry. President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch of turkey, dressing, gravy, and all the trimmings. Thank you, everyone, it was great and thank you to the set-up and clean-up crew. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance and the “Our Father” were recited by all. We also had a moment of silence for Albin Vrana and all our Veterans. Secretary Dolores Vrana read the minutes of the last meeting, and Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek gave her report. Both were approved as read. Ginny Svehlak read a note from Mildred Trlica thanking us for remembering her with a birthday card signed by all of us. A thank you was received from Debbie Gallagher for the memorial in memory of Libbie Elsik. A thank you from the Catholic

Daughters for the donation to the scholarship fund in memory of Josephine Kubin was also received. Ginny also read a short, funny story. I didn’t get the name. Sunshine Lady Ann Clagett announced the November birthday celebrants - Maggie Holy, Willy Matus, and Martha Ritchey. “Happy Birthday” was sung to all three. Quilt scheduler Pat Fowler announced in December we have the Christmas party; January 2015 - quilt for Dorothy Kudrna; February - for Pat Fowler; March - for Irene Prachyl; and April - the quilt top donated to us by Bessie Laznovsky. We discussed our shut-in members’ Christmas gift sacks. We have 11 shutins this year. Several members have made cash donations toward this. Thank you, everyone. This year, the Circle voted to purchase fried chicken for the Christmas lunch and members bring side dishes and desserts. Maggie Holy was asked

if she would order and pick up the chicken that day. Thank you, Maggie, for doing that. We will meet at 10 a.m., visit, and play some bingo before lunch. If you want to play, you pay 25 cents for each game; the winner gets the pot. If you want to participate in the gift exchange, bring a gift for $10, put your name on it then you will receive a gift. After lunch, we will have the meeting, exchange of gifts, and prize drawing of our friendship quilt on which all our names are embroidered. We also have other items for the prize drawing donated by Gay Williams and Libbie Vrla. Thank you, both. President Irene showed her blockof-the-month square, a geese pattern, which is really pretty. In January, Irene will have a class every month teaching how to cut and sew a quilt top. Anyone is welcome to come. It was announced that Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger will be coming to Dallas for Thanksgiving. Remember, they moved to North Carolina. The Tuesday after Thanksgiving, they will be coming to Ennis for the senior gym class at 10 a.m. Anyone who would like to come and join us exercise and visit with Joyce and Joe are welcome. It will be free of charge, and a light lunch will be served afterward. If you would like to bring a dish, that would be okay. We hope many attend. We will be collecting dues in December for 2015, and dues are $5. Anyone is welcome to join. Willie Matus was the 50-50 dollar game winner. President Irene thanked all for coming, for quilting, for the delicious food, and the set-up and cleanup. I wasn’t in the kitchen so I don’t know if Joe Kostak was the dish washer or not, but if you were, thanks. Ann made motion to adjourn the meeting, and it was seconded by Maggie Holy. Again, I didn’t get any special news; maybe next month. Remember, everyone, try and make our December Christmas party on December 11 at 10 a.m. The Circle will furnish fried chicken, play bingo, and have a gift exchange and meeting. Stay warm and well. Happy Thanksgiving to all. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Youth members Abby and Emma Hoelscher and Keith Wockenfuss all lended a helping hand and helped spread a positive attitude among participants.

Thank you to District Three Director John Engelke and wife Diane for helping us plant all 10 trees. John’s knowledge and hands-on actions helped ensure the correct planting and teaching of everyone involved. Thank you to Cooper Farm Executive Director John Hoelscher and wife Lisa for predigging the holes, loading up the water tank, and for allowing us to come out in the cold and drizzling rain. Thank you to Mr. Garfield Hawk, founder of the Un-Included Club, for sharing such well-behaved children with us, We hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did. Thank you to all the parents and

grandparents who came out to help. You all have such awesome children, and I am very proud of them on a regular basis, but especially on Saturday, November 15. This was a day to learn how to replenish the earth and enrich the lives of others. I am pretty sure that goal was met, and an awesome lesson was learned by all! Thank you for sharing your children with SPJST and for helping out during this special project. Thank you to everyone who made donations towards the purchase of the trees. Dear Readers, What an awesome day I had at Cooper Farm on Saturday, November 15, 2014. We planted trees and spent time with the Un-Included Club from Temple. I also enjoyed seeing some of my fellow LITs from around the state.

My favorite part was helping with the ropes course. It was very rewarding to see the smiles on the youths’ faces as they participated on the zipline, swing, and rock climbing wall. I even made me a “little buddy” who hung out with me. It was a cold, wet day, but well worth it. Thank

They even related to the fact that they had also danced the same dance in similar costumes when they were our age. Kelsey Moore, age 16

Adjust rack to lower third of oven and preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cream the butter, sugars, and vanilla until smooth. In a separate bowl, mix together the cornmeal, flour, and salt. Combine dry ingredients with butter mixture to form a soft dough. Shape into 1-inch balls (using about 1-1/2 teaspoonfuls of dough per cookie), and space about 1-1/2 inches apart on large, parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until bottoms are lightly colored. While cookies are still warm on the baking sheets, sprinkle them with confectioners’ sugar through a small sieve. When thoroughly cool, dredge them in confectioners’ sugar for a second coating. Source: http://www.almanac.com —SPJST—

West Sokol Gym and Facilities Groundbreaking Ceremony Ground was officially broken for the West Sokol Gym and Facilities in a grand ceremony held Thursday, November 20, 2014, at 9 a.m. Master of Ceremonies Robert Podhrasky, first vice president of American Sokol, welcomed hundreds to the gathering. The Sokol West/Lone Star Hall was destroyed in the April 17, 2013, West Fertilizer Plant Explosion. West High School Junior Historians Director Aaron Wernet introduced the group who presented a lively performance of Czech dances. City of Waco Fire Department Honor Guard presented the flags to open the ceremonies. Miss Czech-Slovak Texas Christiana Gentry proudly sang the Czech and American anthems. Shane Bivens, president of Sokol West, recognized the first responders who gave their lives protecting the City of West on April 17, 2013. Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Bohuslav Sobotka, Governor of the State of Texas Rick Perry, City of West Mayor Tommy Muska, and American Friends of the Czech Republic Chairman Fred Malek addressed the attendees. Each offered words of support and encouragement for the project and the citizens of West. West High School Junior Historians then performed for the Prime Minister and Czech delegation of more than 20 people. Sokol West Board of Directors were introduced as Laura Berger, Anna Dulock, Mary Beth Dulock, Patricia Dieterich, Janice Otto, Andi Otto, and Dale Berger. They, along with Prime Minister Sobotka, Governor Perry, Czech Ambassador of the United States Petr Gandalovic, Mayor Muska, President Bivins, and Chairman Malek broke ground on the facility. Prime Minister Sobotka then dedicated the cornerstone that was designed by Jerry Milan. The stone reads, “Byli jsme . . . a budem! We were . . . and we will be!” Sokol means “falcon” in Czech, a bird who by his swiftness and energy symbolizes the active, vigorous, strenuous, real Spartan life. On January 6, 1980, the unit was named Sokol Gymnastics Association of West and received its charter to the American Sokol Organization in February 1980. Arrangements were made with West ISD to utilize the M.O. Robinson Gymnasium (former St. Mary’s Gym) for the unit’s gymnastics activities. With many contributors such as Westfest Inc., local banks, area businesses, and individuals, Sokol was able to purchase needed

gymnastic equipment. In 1988, Sokol West purchased land from SPJST Lodge 54, West at 1203 North Davis in West. Construction then began on the new facility which was completed in March 1989. It was named Sokol West Gymnasium. In 1913, Lone Star Hall was established by SPJST. In 1979, Sokol became part owner of the hall with SPJST in order to work side by side for a friendlier community. SPJST voted to lease premises to Sokol West for 25 years. Then, in 2011, Sokol purchased the other half of the Lone Star Hall from SPJST Lodge 54. •••

Another big step came Thursday, November 20, 2014, for the city of West. City leaders met to break ground on a new traditional Czech gymnasium and meeting place that was destroyed in last year’s fertilizer plant explosion. But it wasn’t just local leaders celebrating the milestone; the prime minister of the Czech Republic and Texas Governor Rick Perry were there to lend a shovel. The ceremony started with the StarSpangled Banner, followed by a national anthem we seldom hear. Christiana Gentry, Miss Texas Czech-Slovak queen, also sang the Czech Republic national anthem, a meaningful one for the large Czech community in West. “It is a responsibility of all CzechAmericans to come together in the tradition of the Czech people to help at a time of need,” said Fred Malek, chairman of American Friends of the Czech Republic. Those traditions shone strong Thursday.

West High School students danced to Czech songs, and an accordion player added his own renditions after the groundbreaking. It was part of a packed ceremony to break ground on the new Sokol West, a traditional Czech gym and meeting place. Czech Republic Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka spoke to the crowd in their native language. “I wish the new Sokol gymnasium becomes a symbol of the partnership and solidarity in the times of need,” Sobotka said in Czech, spoken in English by his translator. Thursday was the groundbreaking for phase one. The facility will be built in two phases, with the first scheduled to be finished next year. But the ceremony wasn’t about just moving a little dirt. “This is another milestone in this community,” Governor Perry said. Perry told the crowd the day of the explosion, everyone in Texas was from West. Rebuilding the Sokol is just the latest healing step. “Building are just buildings,” he said. “They’re inanimate. But this community has an amazing soul.” It’s a soul still filled with the Czech culture that built West so strong a century ago. The government of the Czech Republic reached out after the explosion and helped raise money. Some of those funds went to rebuilding the gym. The ceremony Thursday morning made clear Sokol West means different things to different people. Katie and Jimmy Alexander’s kids can get back to what they know. “It means that she can stop asking me when they’re going to have a new gym,” Katie Alexander, who lives in Abbott, said, “because she’s been asking me every day since April 2013.” “It’s definitely a new start,” Jimmy

Alexander said. One of the focal points for Sokol West is the gym, where they’re going to teach kids gymnastics. Also in the gym is going to be a volleyball court. The floor plans also show a space they call a social hall, and even a covered beer garden. The old building was destroyed in the blast. “I think everyone felt it,” Gentry said. “People in the Czech Republic felt it, people all over the US who are Czech, even Czech-Americans, they definitely felt like they were part of it.” During the ceremony, they were very much a part of it. Sobotka dedicated the cornerstone for the new building. Text on the stone reads, “We were . . . and we will be,” in English and in Czech. “Most people would think well that would stop us, but it didn’t. And we will be,” said Jerry Milan, who designed the stone. “It means that back in the Czech Republic and all over the world and the United States that people care about us,” Bria Dokupil, Miss Westfest 2014, said. It means a revival of the Sokol motto. “We want each individual child to be the best that they can be,” said Dr. George Smith, a former president of Sokol West. It means the city is another step stronger. “This month we had the school break ground,” said West Mayor Tommy Muska, “and we have the Sokol break ground, and right, you know, a block away is the nursing home that’s half-finished." Above all, it means West never lost its soul. “It really tells the community, you know, everyone’s behind us and everybody’s ready to get back going,” Jimmy Alexander said. Also Thursday, the city of west opened up the bidding process for repairing roads damaged in the explosion. That comes with financial help from the state. After the groundbreaking, local leaders honored the Czech delegation at a barbecue lunch. The prime minister and ambassador to the United States were made honorary McLennan County deputy sheriffs. They were also named honorary Texans, and were given cowboy hats, belts, and spurs. —kcentv.com —SPJST—

Veselé Vánoce – Merry Christmas This simple yet unique ornament wishes everyone a “Merry Christmas” on one side and tells of some of the Czech Christmas customs on the opposite side. It reads: “On the evening of December 5, St. Nicholas legendarily descends from a gold cord with an angel and mentor to reward or admonish children. At Christmas Eve supper, a chair is left vacant for the Christ-child. After supper, candles on the tree are lighted. Tree décor includes straw and paper stars, Bohemian glass ornaments, fruits, nuts, cookies, and intricately painted eggshells – symbolizing birth. After Midnight Mass, children often sleep on straw by the manger, reminiscent of Christ’s birth. On January 6, Epiphany, priests write C+M+B over the doors of homes, placing a cross between letters which stand for the initials of the Magi and a Latin phrase meaning, “May Christ bless this home.” Texas Czech Genealogical Society has Czech Pride ornaments available for $9 in our office located downstairs in the Home Office.
