hanks to Nello Strickland of Lodge 169, Brenham for the very nice voicemail. Nello commented that he enjoy the Vestnik each week and especially enjoyed an image of a pumpkin with a cross that we published recently. Thanks, Brother Nello, and keep up the great work at Lodge 169. Eggnog Icing Accounting Assistant Dorothy Stuchly shared a delicious, festive recipe for Eggnog Icing. Thanks, Dorothy! Can’t wait to try it. 1 1/2 cups butter 8 cups powdered sugar, sifted 1/2 cup eggnog 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Whip all together and frost.

This Week’s Funnies Thanks to everyone who reads my column each week. This is for the ones who have asked for some funnies . . . just in time for Christmas! What song do guests generally sing at an Eskimo’s Christmas party? —Freeze a jolly good fellow.

What do you can call a polar bear who wears ear muffs? —Anything you want. He can’t hear you! What type of pine has the sharpest needles? —A porcupine. What is the best key to get at Christmas? —A turkey! What kind of Christmas tree comes from Hawaii? —“O Tanning Palms!” Why was Santa’s little helper depressed? —Because he had low elf esteem. When everyone observes Santa during the party, what mood is usually noticed? —Santamental. What kind of music do elves like best? —“Wrap” music! How do snowmen greet each other? —Ice to meet you! How do sheep in Mexico greet Merry Christmas? —Fleece Navidad! How do elves greet each other? —“Small world, isn’t it?” And, my very favorite . . . How do cats greet each other at Christmas? —“A furry merry Christmas and happy mew year!” —SPJST—

From District Seven Director Bayer

Director Bayer Shares Updates

Hello from District Seven Director Bob Bayer. Just an update on things around my home since October 27, 2014. As you all know, I had a hip replacement on my left side this time. Fifteen months ago, I had my right hip replaced. Wow - two new knees and two new hips . . . What next? I was in San Antonio at the New Mission Trails Hospital located in the Old Brooks Fields Annex for five days. Then I was transferred to Connally Hospital in Floresville to their swing bed ward. I went through two-aday rehab there for seven days and lots of walking. On November 6, Medicare said that I will have to move to a rest home that provides rehab. I was moved to Regency Rest Home in Floresville for further rehab. After eight days, I told them I wanted to go home. On the evening of November 14, Polly picked me up and took me home. Polly and my children have been taking care of me. Home Health comes by once a week for five weeks, and Warm Springs Rehab comes by three times a week for three weeks. They will re-evaluate me to see if I will need more rehab; if so, it will be another three weeks. I am doing fine and will recover after all of this. I would like to thank everyone of you that sent cards and all of the phone calls. Thank you very much; this means so much to me.

It looks like I will be at home through December. I have not forgotten SPJST and never will. I am always in contact with the Home Office. On November 19, I had a two- and one-half hour meeting and lunch with our new Supreme Lodge Vice President Clifton Coufal. He came down, and we discussed many aspects about SPJST. Then, we got down to business in reference to insurance sales and District Seven. We talked about a new state field person and more sales reps in certain areas of the district. We talked about putting ads in local newspapers in our area. We talked about other state field people covering our district. We looked at what would be good for District Seven and what would not work in District Seven. But one thing for sure, we will not forget District Seven of SPJST. If we all work together, we can make many things happen in the SPJST. If there is anything that you need help on in the insurance field, don’t hesitate to call us at any time: Vice President Coufal (254) 773-1575 or (254) 931-5231 or Director Bob Bayer (830) 393-9073. Fraternally, Bob Bayer District Seven Director —SPJST—

Step Up to the Plate! Membership Program Update Statewide Goal: 1,500 Certificates Issued Through November: 802 Certificates Issued SPJST Mission Statement Insuring and enriching lives.

SPJST Vision Statement Our vision is to provide a wholesome family environment; to encourage cherished Czech traditions; and to provide high quality, competitive life insurance for our members.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

Beginning in 2014, the scope of SPJST’s longstanding Premium Refund Program will be expanded to incorporate the Membership Program incentives, dramatically simplifying the program and compensating lodges on the basis of the premium income generated by the lodge.

The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80 percent of the lodge’s annual earned premium. To receive the Enhanced Pre-

mium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria: 1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program. 2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

For Lodge Incentive updates, please contact the Financial Secretary’s Department. —SPJST—

Lodge 88 Houston youth celebrates 5th birthday

Lucas John Ridgway-Cernosek, member of Lodge 88, Houston, turned five on November 19, 2014. He celebrated with a costume/pizza party with a Transformer theme at home given by his dad, Allen Cernosek, on November 22. Many children, relatives, neighbors, and friends were in attendance despite the stormy weather. Among the guests were his grandparents, Susan and Wilbert Cernosek, his aunt Melissa Cernosek, and great-grandmother Betty Smith, who is a longtime Lodge 88, Houston member. Lucas had a great time at his party playing many games, and he enjoyed the silly string, snaps, and the pinata. This year, Lucas is into Transformers. He enjoys fishing and crabbing with his dad, cousin, and PoPo. He has learned to mow grass and build fires with his PoPo. Lucas loves the guy stuff. He also attends pre-school that he likes very much. He is one busy five-year-old. —SPJST—

thrilled about their stocking as you are, give them the same treat before the holiday -- so that it’s more familiar and better received. This year, consider giving a gift that promotes good health. While nearly half of all dog owners have turned away from a kiss from a dog because of its bad breath, more than a quarter say they don’t brush their dog’s teeth at all. And bad breath isn’t just unpleasant; it can be a sign of poor dental health or dental disease. Consider

giving your dog a dental chew that carries the Veterinary Oral Health Council Seal of Acceptance for control of plaque and tartar, such as Greenies Canine Dental Chews. They are the number one veterinarian-recommended dental chews and are available in special Season’s Greenies holiday packaging around this time of year. • Give your pet extra love: During the holidays your routine will likely change. Your dog will be able to tell,

but not know why. As you are out shopping or attending a holiday party, your pet might be missing out on his usual attention. Show your pet some love by setting some time aside for daily play time or an extra walk. Or give them their favorite treat. More pet health tips and resources can be found at www.Greenies.com. ENC Executive Director Shares Information on Hollow Tree Condition

Keep Pets Happy and Healthy This Holiday Season

(StatePoint) The holiday season can mean new routines, new décor and new foods in your home. While these temporary changes can be exciting for people, they can be hazardous to pets. “The extended holiday season is no excuse to take a vacation from being a great pet parent,” says Dr. Jeff Werber, Hollywood’s Vet to the Stars. Keeping your dog happy and healthy this holiday season is easy, Werber says. He is sharing some seasonal tips. • Keep curious pets focused: Most pets will be curious about the tinsel, ornaments and ribbons of the season. Since most decorations are not petfriendly, keep them beyond reach and take necessary precautions and keep your pets focused on something they truly enjoy. If your dog begs at the table every night, chances are they’ll be begging at the holiday dinner table. With new people over and different kinds of food falling to the floor, it’ll be important to prevent distractions during dinner. Use healthy treats, such as Greenies, as a training tool to keep your dog away from guests’ dinner plates. • Give recognizable gifts: A whopping 85 percent of pet parents buy their dog a holiday present, according to the 2014 Greenies: Dog Owners Survey. In order for your pet to be as

Recently, I cut down two large trees down at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. The trees were next to the infirmary, and both were dangerously hollow. I did some research and learned the hollow condition is natural and happens to older trees that have been damaged. I came across this interesting article written by Keith Brown on the condition. The article is located on the Austin Tree Experts website and located at https://www.austintreeexperts.com/blog/cavity-tree-internaldecay-hollow. Fraternally, John Hoelscher Executive Director SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm Cavity in Your Tree – Internal Decay by Keith Brown July 11, 2010

Ever wondered how a tree that is hollow on the inside can be alive, or have not fallen when the wood is hollow in the middle? Internal decay is a common phenomenon in trees. I wouldn’t call it good, but it is normal (i.e., very common). These cavities are caused by mother nature’s decay

fungi. Their job in the grand scheme of things is decompose woody materials back into the soil. The decay process usually gets started from some large wound. Could have been from a lightening strike, broken limb, or even a damaged root underground. Any large wound usually leads to decay. Wounds larger than about 3 to 4-inch diameter (can vary depending on tree species and health) take the tree so long to callous over and close up the wound that rotting fungi get established and start breaking down the inner column of wood in the tree. It is a good idea to avoid making large wounds to trees. If you can achieve your goals of pruning by removing multiple small limbs instead of one big limb, that is ideal. If you have to trench or cut roots near a tree, stay as far from the trunk as possible. Or, use an airspade to dig without cutting roots. Many trees, such as live oaks do a good job of compartmentalizing the decay. This means that the fungi only rot away the dead wood in the center of the tree and the newer growth rings are protected. Therefore, internal decay is usually more of a structural integrity issue and less of a health and vigor issue for trees. Some trees do a

very poor job of compartmentalizing decay and should be evaluated carefully. Hackberry and Ash are two good examples of trees that do a poor job of compartmentalizing decay. Compartmentalizing decay is one way that trees deal with decay. There is another factor that affects a tree’s ability to tolerate wood rotting away. I like to explain this by comparing to a steel fence post. A steel fence post is hollow in the center, but its shape gives it strength. The same goes for a tree. The tree can tolerate loss of wood in the middle so long as the tree puts on new growth rings on the outside. Each new set of rings adds to the tree’s strength. “Rams-horns” also help trees deal with massive trunk wounds. If there is a very large wound on the side of the tree trunk, this type of wood development will usually occur. A “ramshorn” is when the new callous tissue growing on the edge of the wound culs inward to create a columnar growth rather than growing flat across the wound. Growing flat across the wound would heal the wound faster, but rams-horns provide better structural improvement. By growing these two columnar growths on each side of the wound the tree has create two smaller “fence posts” on each side of the wound. Decay is a tricky subject; even for the most experienced and skilled arborists. Tree species, tree health, weather conditions and the location of the tree all play a role in quantifying the risk factor of a tree with rot. Most importantly, you should consider potential targets. If the tree is in a field you can live with a high percentage chance of it falling over. If it is growing over your kids play area, you can’t tolerate much risk at all. —SPJST—

SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville was organized in 1897. The first officers were President Thomas Hruska, Vice President Ernest Knesek, and Secretary John Slavik. The lodge was organized on the second story of the J.R. Kubena-Knesek Building located on the northeast corner of the city square in Fayetteville. This upper story was used for various socials, including public dances, and was also the site of the Third SPJST Convention in 1902. (The building was razed in the 1940s to make room for the new SPJST Home Office Building in Fayetteville.) The lodge was organized by 35 members, and the membership had grown to 66 by the time of chartering in 1897.

In the lodge meeting on February 13, 1910, it was voted that the lodge purchase some land to build a meeting hall. J.R. Kubena was president at the time. A Site Committee was elected to buy the land from Ernest and Mathilda Pagel. The committee consisted of Ernest J. Knesek, Frank Piwetz, Charles Klimicek, Tomas Hruska, and J.R. Kubena. In the meeting of April 16, 1910, it was announced that 2.69 acres had been purchased from the Pagels the previous month for $385.80. On July 20, 1911, an adjoining one acre was purchased from Frances Tydlacka, and an additional 2.72 acres was purchased from Mrs. Tydlacka on May 23, 1914. In the meeting of June 12, 1910, a committee consisting of Ernest J. Knesek, Josef Franka, and Rudolf Sladek were elected to see that the lodge hall was built. The hall was built in the following months and the first meeting in the hall was held on October 9, 1910. The new hall was dedicated on October 2, 1910, with J.R. Kubena as president. One of the things that the oldest charter member remembers in

1979 (Josef Jurecka, 98) was that the attendance at the dedication was so huge that the occasion netted approximately $1,200. The lodge hall is located within the city limits just east of town on Highway 159. The building stands today as it was originally built and is in good repair. The gradual decline of farming in the area and the resulting loss of many rural families, starting in the late 1930s, was a significant turning point in the history of Lodge 1. Biographical Sketch of John Rudolph Kubena

J.R. Kubena served as SPJST Supreme Lodge Secretary from 1897 to 1938. He was also one of the leaders spearheading the efforts of reform in the national C.S.P.S. and eventual withdrawal and formation of the new SPJST in Texas. Kubena has been widely referred to as the “Daddy of SPJST.” He was killed in a tragic auto-pedestrian accident in Galveston on May 3, 1938.

John R. Kubena was born June 10, 1868, in Lichnov, near the town of Frenstat in Moravia, Austria, a policial province which is now part of Czechoslovakia. His father was named Jan

(John) and his mother was Veronika Kulhanek Kubena. On March 16, 1882, John immigrated to the United States with his parents and four brothers and sisters. The Kubena family settled on a rented farm near Fayetteville, Texas. John lived with his parents on this farm until 1890. Soon thereafter, he became a naturalized citizen. From 1890 to 1896, he lived in La Grange, Texas and worked as a clerk for the mercantile store of C.J. Von Rosenberg. John R. Kubena married Julia Cecile Sladek on January 21, 1896. Julia’s parents were Jan (John) Sladek and Mary Polak Sladek. Eight boys and three girls were born to John and Julia Kubena. The first child Bertha, died in infancy. John and Julia moved to Moulton, Texas in 1897, where John was employed by Eduard Boehm in his general merchandise store. A second child, Jerome, was born in Moulton on June 11, 1898. In 1899, the Kubena family returned to Fayetteville, Texas, where John purchased a general merchandise store and combined it with one owned by his brother-in-law Ernst J. Knesek, who married John’s half sister Johanna. After the retirement of Mr. Knesek, John operated the business as a sole proprietorship with the help of his brothers and children. During this time, he erected three buildings which are in existence at this time. Subsequently, this business was sold to John Cufr. While in La Grange, Texas, John was affiliated with a national organization formed for Czech people, known as CSPS. CSPS was a mutual insurance company established by the members for their families. In 1896, because of dissatisfaction of some members with policies and benefits of the CSPS, twenty-five members decided to secede and form their own company. On June 20, 1897, the Slovanic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas was organized with 497 male members and financial resources of $497.00. J.R. Kubena was elected secretary-treasurer of this fraternal society, currently identified with the initials SPJST, an abbreviation of the Czech name of this organization. Mr. Kubena was an official of the SPJST for 42 years until his death. John R. Kubena was quite active in his lifetime. He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives for

He was associated with the New Ulm Texas State Bank as a director, with the Fayetteville State Bank as treasurer, and with the Gulf State Bank of Houston, Texas, as a director and vice president. John R. Kubena - The Legend

It is an honor to tell the story about John R. Kubena, my father, a story rich in tradition, of compassion, and of love. This man devoted his life to his family and his fellow man, a true leader and champion of his ethnic heritage. He was a man of many professions: farmer, merchant, banker, law maker, insurance executive, politician, salesman, and educator. He was honored on several occasions by the writings of associates or companions, as evidenced by the articles I have reference or paraphrased in this history. He was born of Czech ancestry, the race or division of mankind that originated in Europe and which adheres strongly to its language, customs, and culture. By his peers John Kubena was depicted as a giant among men, a strong and influential leader. To me, he was a kind, gentle and loving father, who paid for my education, gave me my first job and encouraged me to seek a better life. This man had outstanding strength, drive and courage, who adhered to these principles until he died.

He was still very active and in good health when he met death in a tragic accident in 1938. Because of a recent operation in one eye, he was forced to wear a dark patch over that eye. While on business for the SPJST at Galveston, Texas, he stepped off the curb on a busy street and was run down by a passing motorist, whom he did not see because of the patch on that side of his face. He met death instantly. Some comments made by friends with which I agree were: “The SPJST and the State of Texas lost one of its founders, great leader and guiding hand. He had been the spine or operative backbone of the SPJST. Mr. Kubena could do more planning and less talking than any person and had less selfish interests and aspirations than any of us who worked with him and around him.” If someone asked to describe the John R. Kubena family in one word, you probably would say “tenacity”. This was true of father John and his children. In reading their biographies, you will find that once they chose a profession, they stuck with it until retirement. More than 20 years in one field was the norm not the exception. You will find tenures of 23, 30, 33, 38, 40, and 42 years. —SPJST—

Encourage children to learn more about science and nature at playtime

(StatePoint) Have any budding scientists in your family? If your children are fascinated by nature, dinosaurs and other cool science subjects, you can help foster their interests by turbo charging their playtime to fit their favorite topics. “Learning is not just for the classroom or a formal setting,” says Dr. Lise Eliot, early childhood development expert and member of VTech’s Expert Panel. “Teachable moments happen naturally every day, and you can create some of your own, too.” Here are some great educational playtime ideas for your budding paleontologists and naturalists: Dino-mite Makeover Transform your child’s bedroom or play area into a prehistoric retreat with dino clings on the walls, stencils, and dinosaur bedding. Help your child identify the different dinosaurs on each.

Field Trip Visit the dinosaur exhibit at a local museum. Some museums even have sleepovers where kids can sleep under the dinosaurs! Or take a trip to the zoo or aquarium. It’s the perfect way to expose children to a wide variety of animals that may be new to them. Bring along a notebook and let kids sketch animals and make scientific observations about the animals’ behaviors.

Dinosaur-Themed Toys “Toys can be so much more than a distraction,” says Eliot. “Look for toys that let kids play creatively and engage in imaginative play.” New innovative toys let kids act out prehistoric scenes. For example, Switch & Go Dinos Turbo, from VTech, a leader in age-appropriate and developmental stage-based electronic learning products for children, feature fun and creativity. The toys combine dinosaurs and vehicles, providing a 2in-1 imaginative and stimulating play experience. A new dynamic remote control dino, Bronco the RC Triceratops, transforms with the push of a button and gets a turbo boost for a burst of speed. Also check out Digger the Woolly Mammoth, a prehistoric powerhouse that

transforms into an excavator. Kids can press the action buttons to hear cool, educational dinosaur facts and phrases, providing a fun and enriching playtime. More information can be found at www.vtechkids.com/switchandgodinos.

Reading Time Foster a love of reading while encouraging kids’ natural wonder by visiting your local library and exploring subjects like dinosaurs, earth science and astronomy. By locating books that pique your kids’ interests, you can help develop a lifetime love of learning. Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club Gives Blankets, Visits Corn Maze

Dear Vestnik, On November 2, 2014, Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club donated more than 30 blankets to the Poteet Nursing Home for our Make a Difference Day project. It was spiritlifting to see all of their patients so happy about getting lap blankets! Everyone was so excited to see us. After we finished visiting and handing out blankets, we all went to the corn maze in Hondo for an outing. It was hard for me to go through the maze because I was in an ankle

cast and on crutches, but then we went on a hayride so the break from walking was good. It was sad because I was the one who suggested the corn maze as an outing in the first place, but instead ended up having the hardest time! We all enjoyed the maze and all the patients liked their lap blankets, so the day was successful! Fraternally, Kelly House —SPJST—

Pravidelně docházela do našeho místní ho domova důchodců a přinášela osadníkům domácí chleba.

Pak Christiana Gentry, texaská královna československého Texasu, zazpívala americkou a českou hymnu.

Pak byli představení vedoucí činitelé místního Sokola a každý z významných lidí uchopil rýč a slavnostně pohnul půdou k základům nové sokolovny.

Mechanical, AOS Engineering, K4 Construction, Ass. Concrete Contractors, Fritz a Michael Duda, The Beck Company. —SPJST—

C z ec h Christmas T r a di ti o n s By Lucie Malinová

No other time of the year is associated with as many traditions in the Czech Republic as Christmas. Its magic is contagious and appears to affect even the most sensible people. When else is it possible to see a young woman in the 21st century tossing a

shoe over her shoulder? Or a serious gentleman putting a fish scale into his wallet? Or an entire family eagerly watching little boats made from walnut shells sailing across a bowl full of water? Of course, this is Christmas, when unusual things are normal. The Czech Christmas tradition is itself inseparably associated with the Christian tradition and pagan rituals, ancient local customs and the influence of other countries. Hear are some of the most common Christmas and Advent traditions followed in the Czech Republic. Advent Wreath One of the most common symbols of the pre-Christmas period is the Advent wreath. It is generally made by tying together evergreen branches, which are then decorated with ribbons, pinecones and other trinkets. Around the wreath are placed four candles, each representing one of the four

We also have Bumper Stickers: “Texas Czech” - “Na Zdravi” – “Jak se Mas?” – “Dobry Den” – and “Jsem Stastny Cech,” Buttons with sayings such as “Jak se Mas?” “You Can Always Tell a Czech By the Poppyseeds In His Teeth,” “Happiness is Being Married to a Czech,” and about 20 others, Czech-themed ceramics, TCGS-published books, cookbooks, conversation cards, and magnets. Be sure to purchase your Legend Christmas Ornaments as well as other ornaments from the Czech Republic before our doors close for 2014.

Finding the Christmas Pickle began in our home a number of years ago when our now adult children were very young. It is “a hunt” which has lasted through kids, grandkids, and is now being passed on to our great-grandson. To describe it as fun is definitely an understatement, and everyone waits on Christmas Eve to hear who will be the first to say: “Is it pickle time?” With a laugh, the mid-20 to 50-something-year-old “kids” (kids and grandkids) begin their hunt! Some sources say the custom of hiding the Christmas Pickle is an old German tradition, and to find it means good luck. Others say the one who finds it receives an extra small gift St. Nicholas left behind for the winner. The pickle is the last ornament to be hung on the tree. Unless you are hiding it from a three-year-old, which for now is a computer-generated eight-inch paper model hung right in front of his tree so he can find it; the older the kids, the more difficult it becomes to hide. The prize for finding can be anything. Ours began with a clear, plastic snowman filled with Christmas candy. Colton’s prize is a toy, while the “big kids” win a gift card. And, oh, while most Christmas pickle ornaments are about three inches in length, our “big kids” ornament has shrunk to one-half inch in size. Yes one-half inch, and don’t tell Pawpaw where you hide it – he can’t stand it and tells! You, too, can begin a “Find the Christmas Pickle Ornament Tradition” in your home this year. The Texas Czech Genealogical Society has Christmas Pickles (regular size) available for $5 in our office located downstairs in the SPJST Home Office. weeks of the Advent period. In this way, Christians await the coming of their Savior. This year, the first day of Advent is December 2. Every Sunday a new candle is lit, so that by the end of Advent all four candles are burning. For Christians, this light is a symbol of the coming of Jesus Christ; however the tradition is also kept by those who are simply looking forward to Christmas.

Advent Calendars Children impatient for the coming of Christmas are generally given an advent calendar to count off the days to the most anticipated day of the year. Every day one of 24 small windows is opened, behind which children find a small reward, usually a piece of chocolate. Advent calendars are traditionally opened on December 1st, but not always. The Advent period begins on fourth Sundays before Christmas Eve Day.

Barborky Unmarried women might be interested in the tradition associated with the feast day of St. Barbora. According to tradition, on this day a young woman cuts off a twig from a cherry tree and puts it in water. If it blooms by Christmas Eve, the girl will marry within a year.

St. Nicholas, Angel and Devil The feast of St. Nicholas (or sv. Mikuláše) is enthusiastically celebrated in the Czech Republic. On the eve of the feast day, December 5th, St. Nicholas comes to visit children with both a devil and an angel to accompany him. St. Nicholas, dressed in a bishop’s habit, first quizzes the children by asking them to recite poems or songs before asking them whether they have been naughty or nice. The devil is given the authority to scare them, while the beautiful angel counters his threats. Finally, St. Nicholas gives children a small gift, usually sweets and fruit, if they promise to be good. Disobedient children on the other hand, receive either a potato or a piece of coal. Children need not worry if they didn’t see St. Nicholas: All they have to do is hang a stocking in the window and then after dark, St. Nicholas will come and fill it with presents, sparing them from being quizzed.

Cookies and Christmas Cake Czech Christmas is certainly the sweetest time of year. Bakers literally try to out do each other with vanilla roles, gingerbread, snow kisses and dozens of other types of Christmas

cookies. Family recipes are passed down through generations, so its no wonder that these Christmas goodies are not only lovely to look at but also melt in one’s mouth. An essential element of the holiday table is vánočka, a sweet bread of braided dough, which is decorated with raisins and almonds.

Nativity Scenes Recreating the biblical scene of the manger at Bethlehem where the baby Jesus was born on a bed of straw is one of the oldest Czech traditions. Throughout the republic, the nativity scene is created in varying sizes and from various materials: using wood, paper, ceramics as well as gingerbread and even butter. In the center of the nativity scene is the baby Jesus in his crèche, surrounded by the Virgin Mary and St. Josef. Above the manger floats

an angel carrying a ribbon with the words “Glory to God in the Highest.” Other characters in the scene include the shepherds and their flock of sheep, to whom the birth was foretold, as well as the three wise men bearing gifts. Some people personalize their nativity scenes by adding characters, buildings and trees from their own surroundings. Nativity scenes can be seen at many exhibitions and in every church as well as in regional museums and in ordinary homes. Source: CzechTourism The world’s largest mechanical nativity scene, called the Krýzovy Nativity scene is in the Guinness Book of World Records. It is made up of more than 13 sets figures, more than 130 of which are mobile. The scene is made of wood, fabric and leather materials. Townsman Tomáš Krýza (1838 -

1918) worked on the nativity scene for more than sixty years. It is now housed at the museum at Jindřichův Hradec. Another exceptional treasure is the Baroque-styled natural nativity scene by Matyáš Bernard Braun, which was created from 1723 to 1733. It is made up of a group of reliefs set out from a cliff wall and statues made from enormous stone blocks. The work’s central scene is a collection is called a nativity scene. The sculptures are scattered around the countryside around Kuks .

The Christmas Tree It is almost impossible to imagine Christmas without a Christmas tree, despite the fact that this tradition is relatively new to the Czech lands. Christmas trees were originally put up in the homes of burghers and aristocrats at the beginning of the 19th century.

VӖSTNÍK

Later, the practice became common in the second half of the century. In the countryside, the custom came from hanging a tree top-down above the banquet table. Initially the tree was decorated with red apples, nuts and other decorations made from straw or sugar. In the 19th century it became common to use decorations made from glass. Pine is the tree most often used, but other evergreens are also used. The Christmas tree is decorated on either Christmas Eve Day (December 24th) or the day before. It is usually taken down at the feast of the Three Kings (January 6th). Since the 1920s, Christmas trees have been erected in public squares in Czech towns and cities. Today, the best known Christmas tree is on Prague’s Old Town Square. —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Museum Hosts Christmas Reception

The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center hosted its sixth annual Christmas reception on Monday, December 1, 2014. The annual Temple Christmas Parade, despite the chilly weather, was well-attended and so was our reception and open house. The board and staff of the museum prepared an array of food and drink for our visitors. Teddy Bear Bakery also hosted an open house in which owner Kirk Lammert served cookies, kolaches, cider, and hot chocolate to guests. Entertainment was provided by the Central Texas Recorder Society. They played Christmas carols and other arrangements with their recorder wind instru-

ments which created wonderful music to celebrate the holiday season. Accordionists Willard Dyer and Ralph Milek, who have been with us the past four years, also delighted us with their snappy polkas and waltzes. We want to wish all our visitors who came throughout the year, our donors, and our supporters the merriest Christmas and happiest New Year during this holiday season.
