very special thank you to our Christmas/2015 float theme designers! Back in the summer, Michael, Emma, and Abby Hoelscher of Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club offered some ideas for float themes. Michael drew up a “Minions” theme based on the ever-popular “Despicable Me” movie. He also suggested recycling the giant Charlie Brown prop (which is a recycled Santa Claus) from a previous year into Gru. Emma and Abby came up with the “Frozen” theme based on the late 2013 movie. These two themes were a big hit at all of the parades that the SPJST Floats participated in. The kids really related to the themes and were very much attracted to our floats. Many people asked to take photos by the floats before and after the parades.
A
2012 SPJST State Duke Michael Hoelscher of Lodge 24, Cyclone sits among the Minions and Gru on the SPJST Float themed “Minions Christmas — Bake My Day.” The float features the Minions baking up Christmas goodies.
We played “Let It Go” with the Frozen float, and the crowd sang— sometimes very loudly—with the music as the float passed through. The floats seemed to bring excitement to the young and the young-atheart as they traveled along the parade routes. Eyes gleamed and smiles were aplenty as we heard “Minions,” “Olaf,” “Elsa” . . . Special thanks to Michael, Emma, and Abby’s parents John and Lisa Hoelscher for driving the floats to many of the parades throughout the year. We very much appreciate this wonderful couple who seems to always go the extra mile for us along with their loyalty and hard work. Over the next several months, we will modify the floats to reflect more seasonal atmospheres for the Minions and for Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and Sven.
Emma, left, and Abby Hoelscher, both of Lodge 24, Cyclone, share a moment on SPJST’s Float themed “Happily Ever After—A Frozen Christmas Celebration” that includes Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and Sven. Branch Library, 746 Clubside Drive. The agenda will be open to business needing immediate attention as well as follow a standard order of business. As to the fare for the fraternal hour luncheon, it will be standard, unless something special is brought up. The last meeting of 2014 was held on the first Sunday, the 7th of December, Pearl Harbor Day. All of us over 80 years of age remember this day very well. All reports were accepted as given.
One major motion to change the meeting date of the January meeting was made and passed. It was moved to the third Sunday, the 18th, due to our Secretary Helen Kelner having to be in an important meeting in Temple on the second Saturday, the 10th. Since our December meeting, this, too, has been changed due to our Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny being in a very bad accident. After this motion, there were some brief discussions, and the meeting adjourned. To Melanie: Get well soon, we all are pulling for you, and hope you leave the hospital soon. To the faithful: Plan to attend on the 18th, see you there, and this writer remains . . . Ze bratrským pozdravů Joseph D. Nezval, FIC Vice President —SPJST—

Those of us at our table met Jeanette at Lorraine’s 90th birthday party, and it was nice to see her again. You must come again; we enjoyed having you. President Sharron suggested we dispense with the reading of the minutes from the last meeting, and she asked Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox to give

This group is researching a piece of art that they believe to be by Leonardo and asked her to comment on it in confidence. After a month of providing them with a great deal of information that was new to them, they invited her to become a member of their international research team, which consists of scholars from Europe, Austria, and the United States, but mostly from Italy. ICE can save lives
Everyone knows that ice can make a drink cool or reduce swelling, but if you put it on your cell phone, it might just save your life. The concept is simple. Make a contact record in your address book with the name “ICE,” which stands for In Case of Emergency. In the note section of the record, you would list your name, blood type, and medical conditions along with prescriptions and physicians. You’d also list the people and their phone numbers that can be contacted in case of an emergency. Several years ago, a British first responder came up with the idea when his emergency unit responded to a call where the victim was unable to communicate due to illness or trauma. The victim’s wallet didn’t indicate specific

persons to be notified in an emergency. The fireman went through his cell phone to try to identify a relative and wasn’t successful. That’s when he came up with the idea of a universal entry into the address book for ICE where the necessary parties and special information could be kept. The story received a considerable amount of publicity and spread across the pond to the United States and into many other countries. While it isn’t recognized everywhere, it is becoming increasingly more popular. Even if emergency technicians didn’t find it, the slight possibility that they would find it and it would make a difference would justify the few minutes it will take to create it. —SPJST—

Tips for families to get healthy this new year
VӖSTNÍK
(StatePoint) New Year’s resolutions often focus on personal improvement. This year experts are encouraging entire families to consider making a pledge to adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle. Parents have more potential than anybody else to influence their chil-
dren’s behavior — including their eating habits — according to a study by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In fact, parents outrank sports celebrities as the people most children would most like to be, according to the survey. “You are the most influential role model in your child’s life,” says Kim Larson, registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy spokesperson. “Modeling healthy eating behaviors encourages children to adopt and choose healthy behaviors that will benefit them for a lifetime.”

Thursday, December 4, 2014, marked a big step forward in the progress of the Nov. 5, 2009, Fort Hood shooting memorial, as ground work finally began on the project. “It is really uplifting. This is the beginning. This is something we’ve been trying to do for the last five years, so when you see the dirt being turned, it’s finally where we want it to be,” said former Killeen Mayor Tim Hancock, who chairs the memorial committee. The committee formed in 2010 to spearhead a fundraising initiative to erect the structure. An in-kind donation from the Whitis Foundation gave the memorial a boost, making site preparation possible. Nancy Whitis, a lifelong Killeen resident, represented the family at the December 4 ceremony at the memorial site near the Killeen Civic and Conference Center to receive recogni-

tion for the donation. “We just wanted to help. We think it’s a worthwhile cause,” she said. The memorial, which will honor the 13 killed and 32 injured in the 2009 on-post shooting, features a circular, open-air pavilion with 13 black granite columns. Each column will be inscribed with a victim’s name and likeness with a bronze sculpture representing aspects of the victim’s interests and personality on top. Whitis said she hopes the memorial offers some small comfort to those affected by the shooting. “It was just such a tragedy, and nobody can really do much, but we can do this little bit. I think it’ll help the ones who have lost people here,” she said. Committee members said they are thankful for the generosity of the Whitis family, as well as the many others who contributed to the effort. “Killeen has always been a giving community. Everybody understands the military and the sacrifices they
make, so they want to contribute. This is just another example of that,” said former Killeen Mayor Fred Latham, who sits on the committee. Though work and fundraising have taken longer than hoped, Connie Kuehl, director of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center and a memorial committee member, said there has been a resurgence on the project. “We’re on a roll, and we’re moving forward,” she said The memorial is expected to be completed this spring. “If the weather is good and the people continue to come forward, it will be possible. I know everybody’s ready,” Latham said. To donate to the memorial, go www.November5Memorial.com. Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club members report on “Frozen” float Two blue ribbons
I rode the SPJST “Frozen” Float in the Taylor parade. We won two blue ribbons: “Best Decorated Float” and “Best Out of Town Float.” I had a lot of fun since I saw other floats and friends. After the parade, I got to take a ride in Melanie’s Corvette! Then, I spent the night at my grandparent’s house with my cousins. Brandon Girod, age 12

This December, I got to be in two Christmas parades with SPJST. Over in Temple, with District Two Duke Cody, my little brother, I walked the whole parade next to the Corvette. The origin of Baby New Year
17
Lodge 20, Granger Youth Club Buys Gifts for Local Groups
People from around the world celebrate to mark the arrival of the new year. One New Year tradition that has survived through the centuries is that of Baby New Year and its image of a toddler wearing only a diaper, sash, and top hat. Baby New Year can be traced to 600 B.C. in Greece and Egypt. Historians note that Greeks believed Dionysus, their God of fertility and wine, was reborn every New Year as a spirit of fertility and luck. Greeks would celebrate with parades featuring a baby in a cradle to represent the birth of Dionysus. Ancient Egyptians used a baby as a symbol to represent rebirth as well. The child symbolized the birth of the new year and the passing of the old one. Over the years, the tradition of Baby New Year has taken on another meaning as well. Some people believe the baby begins as an infant in January and then quickly ages until he is elderly at the end of December. Some stories even suggest Baby New Year ages until he becomes Father Time. Early Christians did not like the tradi-

tion of Baby New Year, feeling it was a pagan celebration. However, the Church eventually revised its standing when it saw how much people stood behind the imagery of a baby representing rebirth. The Christian Church allowed members to celebrate the new year with a baby, and it was believed the practice symbolized the birth and hope offered by baby Jesus.

Baby New Year symbolism has even been used for marketing purposes. Retailers realized the cherubic image would attract consumers, which is why it is now used to promote New Year's sales. But Baby New Year is more than just a successful marketing tool. Each year, many cities and villages name their own Baby New Year, which is the first child
born on January 1. Some attempts to name a Baby New Year for an entire country have been made, but there have been no official pronouncements, as so many children have been born around midnight
on New Year’s Eve that it has been too close to call which baby arrived first. (MS) —SPJST—
Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Assists Needy Families for Christmas Sunday, December 14, 2014 • Submitted by Cristy Girod, Youth Leader
On Sunday, December 14, 2014, Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club hosted a meal for three families in the Taylor community that needed a little help to make Christmas brighter for their children and families. We raised money, bought and wrapped presents for 21 people (14 children), and made a full turkey meal for them. The families were really appreciative of everything, and one said that without our help, their kids wouldn’t have anything to open Christmas morning. To show their appreciation, two young children
stood by the tree and sang “Feliz Navidad” while we were eating. It was a real special moment. Our youth members served the guests before getting their food. We are thankful that we are able to do this. It’s a very special feeling to help someone else out in such a special time. This is our third year to adopt families in the Taylor community. We hope to grow our project annually to spread joy even further.

BENEVOLENCE
ROČNÍK 101 CISLO 1
• Výbuchy ve Vrběticích • By Ivo Marek Choceň, Czech Republic
I will inform about a similar accident in Czech Republic as the one in West, Texas, during the past year. It happened on September 16, 2014, in the settlement of Vlachovice Vrbětice in the Zlín country (Moravia) when a sudden massive explosion of the ammunition storage occurred. Several spontaneous explosions went on resounding in other days. Czech Television inform about this event already two months. The ammunition stockpile belonged to the Army of the Czech Republic, but was leased to a private company, the Imex Group from Ostrava. According to the information on Czech Television, it was before the explosion that a colossal quantity of military infantry and artillery ammunition for export to several European Union countries was placed in the stockpile. The Imex Group was fully responsible for the storage and handling of the ammunition. The outbreak was so extensive that the pressure wave struck as far away as

eight kilometers to the settlement of Slavičín. Five employees of the firm were in the stockpile at the time of the fire; three of them managed to escape; two men, age 59 and age 56, perished. The fire destroyed a storage hall, and the blast knocked out local phone lines. Police and firefighters evacuated a total of a hundred people from the area of the firm. About 150 pupils and 20 teachers were evacuated from schools in the settlement Slavičín. According to the information of the Zlín’s police speaker in December 2014, pyrotechnists took to the stockpile area to clean up the blast’s scattered ammunition. They also began preparing the ammunition for pick-up and delivery elsewhere in January 2015. They will destroy the ammunition incapable of conveyance right in this area of Vrbětice. Collected ammunition, capable of a transport will be temporarily stocked on the place of the
original area, where it will be prepared for a later pick-up. The Home Minister of the CR, Mr. Milan Chovanec, spoke at a press conference before Christmas about the situation in Vrbětice. A lot of the ammunition from the Vrbětice will be taken to buyers. According to his report, the deal will be taken to a stockpile for a provisional period. All ammunition will be genuine listed. In the Czech Republic there is a need for tight legal conditions to handle military material and for the acquisition of licenses on this activity. Supervision will be needed for the State CR over inspections of explosives and ammuni-

repertoire of over 600 songs, and solid vocals in English, Polish, German and Czech, Squeezebox is able to play “something for everyone,” and easily adapts to any venue, ranging from town festivals, polka festivals, ethnic festivals including Polish, Czech, and German festivals and Oktoberfests, to weddings, anniversary parties, church festivals, state and county fairs and music festivals. They currently perform close to 100 engagements a year in up to 20 states a year, including an annual Caribbean Cruise taking place in January. Squeezebox began in the late 1990s under a different name, known at that time as the “Bratwurst Boys,” which was a part time spin-off band consisting of members of the Grammy Nominated “Toledo Polkamotion.” The band continued to evolve and in 2005, the band was comprised of Ted Lange on accordion/bass and vocals, Dave Burner on drums and vocals, and Ted’s mother, Betty Lange, on second accordion. Mollie Busta added her talents to the Bratwurst Boys for the very first time on December 31, 2005, and it was evident the combination of Ted, Mollie, and Dave had something unique and special. Due to popular demand, the band’s number of performances doubled every year, and due to the continual evolution of the band, a decision was made in May 2007 to change the name of the band to “Squeezebox.” To date, Squeezebox has released two CDs and is featured regularly on the Mollie B Polka Party on RFD-TV. They have performed all over the United States to capacity crowds, and as of May 2014, have made over 600 appearances in 23 states. —SPJST—
