Learning the Czech Language . . . Generation to Generation
Youth Earn UIL Play Awards
Congratulations to two District Two youth members! Amya Rodriguez of Lodge 24, Cyclone was awarded the “Best Actress Award” and Ryan Festa of Lodge 87, Temple was awarded the “Best Actor Award” at UIL One Act Play Competition held at the Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center at Temple College in Temple on Friday, January 9. Amya and Ryan both attend Holland Middle School in Holland, Texas. The play titled “When Dorothy Meets Alice” also took first place honors and had numerous cast awards. This is the seventh year in a row that Holland Middle School has received first place honors.
As a young man growing up, Lodge 54, West President Freddie Kaluza’s parents spoke Czech all the time. And, thankfully, Freddie learned some of the language. Now, every morning, Freddie drives grandchildren Tyler, Riley, and Kera Kaluza to school. And, every morning on that 15-minute trip, they have a Czech lesson. “I tell them an English word then give them the Czech translation of the word,” Freddie explains. “We try to add a new word each day.” And, each day, Freddie says the English word and waits for his grandchildren to tell him the Czech translation. “We do this every day— going over the words . . . so after awhile they got pretty good at remembering the Czech words.” Riley has developed a real interest in learning the Czech language, Freddie says. To help her remember the Czech words, she composed a list. On this list, she wrote down the English word and the Czech word in her own vocabulary. “Now, I have looked at

this list and how she gets the Czech word from her spelling and pronounces it so well still puzzles me,” Freddie shares.

Lodge 54, West President Freddie Kaluza holds the microphone for nine-year-old granddaughter Riley Kaluza at the lodge’s Christmas party on December 7, 2014, as Riley translates English words into Czech. Her presentation amazed the audience and was enjoyed by all.
Freddie says that Tyler is able to say the Czech words from memory. “They compete against each other on who can say the Czech word first.” Riley brought her list to the Lodge 54, West Christmas party. As proud granddad Freddie held the microphone, Riley stood on stage reading the English words and translating them into Czech to let everyone know what she has learned. “With close to 100 words on the list, Riley got them all correct without any help,” Freddie reveals. “Needless to say, I was very proud of her!” Freddie thinks the Czech language is being forgotten to future generations and it is important to preserve the Czech culture. “I am very happy that I was able to learn at least some of the Czech language from my parents while at home,” Freddie says. “And, I try to pass this down to my children and grandchildren.” —SPJST—

SPJST Awards Banquet this Saturday in Temple This Saturday, January 31 is the annual SPJST Awards Banquet at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. The banquet begins at 1 p.m. and should end around 6:30 p.m. The keynote speaker is incoming District 55 State Representative Molly White. Awards will be presented to lodges, sales agents, fraternalists of the year, and youth clubs in appreciation for their efforts in 2014. The banquet theme is Mardi Gras, and the statewide “Let the Good Times Roll!” Membership Program will be announced. A barbecue dinner will be served after the awards ceremony. Door prizes will conclude the event. The Pledge of Success Thanks to District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt who passed this along from District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney-Gonzales. Sister Barbara says that her grandson Keith Wockenfuss and his classmates repeat “The Pledge of Success” every day at school.
The Pledge of Success “Today is a new day, a new beginning. It has been given to me as a new gift. I can either use it or throw it away. What I can do today will affect me tomorrow. I cannot blame
anyone but myself if I do not succeed. I promise to use this day to the fullest by giving my best, realizing it can never come back again. This is my life and I choose to make it a success.”
Grateful Gratitude I’m sure I sound like a broken record, but I am just so amazed by the tremendous outpouring of prayers, care, and concern as I recover after the auto accident. The words “thank you” just seem weak, but they are packed with lots of heartfelt appreciation. Last week’s mail brought a very special and meaningful prayer from Lodge 9, Snook member Annette Sebesta. It is absolutely beautiful, and I will always cherish it. A Special Prayer For a Special Friend
Dear Lord, You know my special friend, Has a special need today Surround her with your special love, as earnestly I pray; Take away the burden, The sorrow and the pain And may her cup just overflow, With health and strength again. Amen
—Annette Sebesta Lodge 9, Snook
We also received the sweetest card and note from Lodge 66, Waco member Irene Mueller. My sympathies to Irene whose best friend and beautiful cat “Mitzy” passed away recently. I have so much enjoyed the cards, calls, emails, texts, and visits. I feel so special. Thank you! —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, January 8, 2015, at Sokol club room. Ann Clagett, Irene Prachyl, Dorothy Kudrna, and I arrived around 8 a.m. The club room was warm, we made coffee, cleaned tables, and stretched Dorothy Kudrna’s quilt. Before we knew it, we had quilters all around. Thank you all for coming early to quilt. We quilted, visited, and by lunchtime, we had 18 members. We were glad to have that many in attendance as it was very cold that day. At lunchtime, President Irene led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed three different soups, many sandwiches, and
other dishes and desserts. We set up our food in the club room, which made it easy to go back for seconds and thirds of our delicious soups. We had vegetable beef, cream chicken with vegetables, and potato soup. I think everyone went back three times. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was observed for John Mensik, Janie Dlabaj Menic, Frankie Slovak, and Margaret Valek. The “Our Father” was recited for the above, all our members, and especially Eleanora Pelzel. She fell, had hip surgery, and now has pneumonia in a Dallas hospital. Secretary Dolores read the minutes of the last meeting taken by Ginny

Svehlak. Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek gave her report. Both were approved as read. Ginny Svehlak read several thank you notes: one from Mildred Trlica for her Christmas sack; thank you from Anne Tupy for Libbie Wisniewski, Agnes Dujka; and one from Marie Vrla for her sister Mildred Adamcik. Ginny also read two funny stories that we all enjoyed. Sunshine Lady Ann announced January birthday celebrants - Lil Kosarek, Mildred Adamcik, Eleanora Pelzel, Libbie Elsik, Bessie Laznovsky, Dorothy Booth, and Anne Zabojnik. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Lil and Dorothy Booth. Quilt scheduler Pat announced we will quilt for her in February, in March for Irene, and in April, the quilt top given to us by Bessie Laznovsky. Cards were sent to Eleanora - birthday card and get well; a get well card to Melanie Zavodny; and birthday cards to Bessie Laznovsky, Mildred Adamcik, and Libbie Elsik. Last month, President Irene asked our members to tell how many quilts they have all made in the past. Since 2006, Ann Clagett has made 56 quilts; Lil Kosarek - nine baby quilts, 37 regular quilts, and 20 quilt tops for our Circle; Bessie was called today, and she said that she thinks about 12. Isn’t that great? I called Ann today and asked what she was doing, guess what, quilting. President Irene talked with several members about how to start a quilt top. Next month, she will start us on making a tee-shirt quilt top. I want to start one for my granddaughter Calleigh. She has so many tee-shirts from everywhere, and of course, school. As our officers were voted in by acclamation, Pat Fowler installed them the correct way. Thank you, Pat. You did great. Ginny was our 50-50 dollar winner. Next month, Ann Clagett will bring chili for lunch; that sounds good. I think I will bring a big bag of Fritos. You can bring anything you like. We always have many good items. I talked with Bessie Laznovsky today, and she tells me her brother Leslie Zhanel had knee surgery, and he is at Legend Oaks for rehab and is doing fine. I also hear today that our wonderful quilting member Eleanora Pelzel passed away. I was going to write all the things that have gone wrong for her and bless her soul, she is already gone to be with our dear Lord. May she rest in peace.
President Irene thanked all for coming, quilting, the delicious soup, and other dishes. She reminded that the next meeting will be February 12 Lincoln’s birthday. We will quilt for Pat Fowler, have lunch and meeting, and 50-50 dollar game. She also reminded everyone if you haven’t paid your dues, please do so. I didn’t get who adjourned the meeting - sorry. Let’s all remember Irene in our prayers. She is having carpal tunnel surgery on her hand this Thursday, January 15. We all wish her a speedy recovery. Sunday night, Carol Hejny and I went to John Mensik’s rosary and then Monday morning to his funeral mass. He was the son of Lydia Mensik. The service was truly beautiful; the funeral choir sings so pretty; and his two sisters also sang a couple of songs. One was “Ave Maria.” I always cry when I hear that song; it was one of my mother’s favorite. They also sang a song in Czech. I got to see one of my friends and Vestnik readers Jimmy Strunc. It was good to see him, but I’m sorry it is always at a funeral. Take care and stay well. I am enclosing our group Christmas picture and one of the friendship quilts before it was finished - that sister Libbie won. Each square has a name on it. Take care, stay well and warm, and see you all February 12. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Guests were Willie Nichols, Pat Russell, and Martina Castille, all friends of Elizabeth Creamer. We enjoyed having you. Come again. News Lydia Alholm made her monthly trip to Winstar and continues to win. Good for you! Mary Schneider and I stopped in at Heritage Western Hills for a quick visit with Willie Mae Becan. We saw this lady in the therapy room with a stern look on her face and peddling with all her might. When she saw us, she got the biggest smile on her face, and we knew we were in the right place. It was during her therapy so we didn’t get to visit too long. She is doing well and asked about everyone. I enjoyed receiving a Christmas note from Mary Kay Harrison from Alabama, niece of the late Mary Pavey. She wrote that her daughter now has two children which they enjoy very much. Mary Kay said she still enjoys reading about the Friendship Club in the Vestnik. Our next meeting will be on February 4. We look forward to seeing all of you there. So Until, Keep Smiling! In her role, she traveled throughout Texas representing SPJST, and Pa Pa Garry ensured that Cheyenne was at all of her parade and other appearances supporting her every step of the way. Garry loved his Czech heritage and music and spent many afternoons and evenings polka dancing at Lodge 88’s Chandelier Ballroom and Bill Mraz Dance Hall, which is where Garry and Myriam met. He enjoyed teaching others how to polka dance, including daughter Natalie. He was also teaching grandchildren Tyler and Cheyenne. In his spare time, Garry enjoyed antiques and antique shopping. Mother moved to Houston and her brother Leroy introduced her to her future husband Quentin at a polka dance. They danced their way through 29 years of marriage until his death in 1975. Our mother was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, where she served on the Altar Society. She belonged to SPJST Lodge 88, Houston and KJZT. She was also a Cub Scout leader and a member of the Friendship Club at St. Christopher Church. She loved baking and won trophies for her kolaches, cakes, and pies. Mother also made pecan tarts and cookies for her grandchildren’s weddings. She was a wonderful seamstress, and made clothes for herself, her daughters, and grandchildren. Mother had a very green thumb and enjoyed working in her garden and canning her homegrown pickles. She also supplied us with jelly made from her berries. Mother was loved by family and friends. She was a widow for 40 years and she continued to involve herself with many activities including quilting and ceramics, and later, bingo and dominoes. She never gave up through all the changes that came to her in life. Countless people have told us what a dear, sweet lady she was. She is an example to us all of strength and faith. She will be missed by many, but we know she is dancing polkas with Daddy in heaven! May our departed sister rest in peace. Resolution Committee Gladys Havemann Celestine Darilek Mamie Lorenz —SPJST—
