ould everyone please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance?” Simple words . . . simple task . . . something that I never gave an inkling of thought to. You just stand up, put your hand on heart, and proudly recite the Pledge. But, now, the standing up part of that is a major challenge for me. The next time someone asks me to stand up for the Pledge or a prayer . . . and I am able to stand up on my own two feet, I am going to think about how fortunate that I really am. Thankfully, I am healing from the December 14 head-on auto accident. Last week, I was finally able to roll up to the sink and reach the water without too much excruciating pain. To be able to feel the water rushing on my hands — something that I haven’t been able to do in a long time — well, it was quite an amazing feeling. Again, it’s something I have never even given a millisecond of thought to. You turn the water on, you wash your hands, you move on. No big deal. But, now, it’s a huge deal that I very much appreciate. You may be having the worst day of your life, but you know what? There is someone out there who is having a worse day. It will get better. Keep your chin up and think happy thoughts and think about all of the simple things that we take for granted every day. I know it’s hard to realize sometimes, but it could be a lot worse. Once again, a million thanks for the prayers, get well wishes, and cards. Your love and support is making all the difference in the world to me. In last week’s mailbox, I received the most beautiful card that I will

forever cherish. It was handmade by the late Ann Schoeneman of Lodge 9, Snook and sent to me by her loving husband and family. What a very special treasure.

Ann served in many roles at Lodge 9 and in District One. I worked with her for several years when she served as Assistant District One Youth Counselor when I was State Youth Director. She shared so many of her craft ideas with leaders and youth. She was such an inspiring, beautiful person. I miss her so much. Thanks also to everyone who has sent emails. I will respond to you . . . it’s just taking me a while! I miss the Home Office and everyone who works there, and I miss traveling to the lodge and youth events. And, I especially miss seeing the members. Hopefully, I will be able to get back to normal—whatever that may now be—soon. In the meantime, please keep in touch and keep sending your articles and photos for the Vestnik.

From the Fraternal Department State FAC Shares February Updates

District Spring Meetings District spring meetings are right around the corner and will begin in March. Please plan to attend the meeting in your district. They are: District One—Sunday, April 19 Lodge 9, Snook District Two—Sunday, March 15 Lodge 29, Taylor District Three—Sunday, April 26 Lodge 6, Cottonwood District Four—To Be Announced District Five—Sunday, April 12 Lodge 88, Houston District Six—Sunday, March 15 hosted by Lodge 32, Victoria at The Officers Club 333 Bachelor Drive Victoria Regional Airport Sunday, March 29 hosted by Lodge 185, New Braunfels

FAC Reporting Requirements for 2015 Last year, I reported to you the Fraternal Task Force of the American Fraternal Alliance, SPJST’s nationwide trade association, reviewed activities across a broad range of fraternal areas, seeking to establish common standards of fraternal reporting and record keeping. This was a big change for all on how to report your lodge fraternal hours. The process in reporting those hours is found at www.fraternalsgive.org. I created login IDs and passwords for those Fraternal Activities Coordinators that I had email address information. Under the reporting method, the FAC will complete a simple one-page fill-in-the-blank/check-off form for each lodge meeting, fraternal activity, and/or community service project on the www.fraternalsgive.org website. The new “one-form fits all” eliminates the need for the three-part forms that have been used by SPJST for a number of years. The process also eliminates the necessity of filing both the FAC mid-year report and FAC annual report. Instead, the new form may be completed online following the lodge meeting or event. If the FAC does not have access to a personal computer, he/she may submit the information on a paper form. It will then be necessary for the

FAC to send the completed forms into the SPJST Home Office on a quarterly basis, enabling Home Office personnel to key in the information. Watch your mail as I will be including the Fraternal Activities Coordinator position description and 2015 Reference Guide and paper reporting forms. This guide will have important information such as FAC Reporting Requirements Streamlined for 2015, Premium Refund Program Expanded to Include Incentives, and Lodge Activity Guide.

SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood will host the 2015 State Straight Domino Tournament on Saturday, March 7. All participants are encouraged to preregister no later than Monday, March 2. This will give ample time to the hosting lodge on the amount of food to prepare for the event. Lodge 6, Cottonwood members will be working hard to make this event successful and enjoyable for everyone. To register, contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez in the Fraternal Department at tammym@spjst.com or (800) 7277578. Please invite and encourage your friends to participate and enjoy a day of fraternalism. Registration for members and non- members will be $7 and will include lunch.

State 42 Domino Tournament The State 42 Domino Tournament will be hosted by Lodge 49, Rowena on Saturday, April 11. Please preregister by March 30 so I can let the host lodge know how much food to prepare for lunch. We do accept walk-ins as well. We hope to see many of our domino players in attendance along with non-members.

Fraternal Alliance of Texas Scholarship Program Members at the Fraternal Alliance Of Texas convention in October 2008 voted to establish the proceeds of the

bowling tournament to fund the scholarship program. You can find the Fraternal Alliance Of Texas Scholarship application on our SPJST website at www.spjst.org/scholarships.html. All applications must be postmarked by Saturday, February 28, 2015. Graduating high school seniors or equivalent who have an active fraternal life insurance certificate in force for at least one year prior to January 1 of the year in which the scholarship is being applied, and plan to enter college in the fall term following the announcement of their award, will be eligible to submit an application for the FAOT Scholarship. Late applications will not be accepted. Send completed applications and any attachments to: Fraternal Alliance Of Texas Scholarship Program 211 Cottonwood Lane Seguin, Texas 78155

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Although the deadline to apply for a scholarship is February 1, the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues through March 31. Thanks to all lodges and members who have contributed to this worthy cause to assist members in furthering their education and helping them to achieve career goals. Keep those pennies coming in. Any amount will be graciously accepted.

Join Hands Day May 2 marks the date for this year’s Join Hands Day. Join Hands Day is a program of the American Fraternal Alliance. The 125-year-old organization unites not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies that operate in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. We hope your lodge has discussed plans for a project to involve youth, adults and other organizations to make improvements in your community. This year, SPJST wants lodges to invite other community organizations such as Lions Club, Volunteer Fire Departments, Kiwanis, Boy/Girl Scouts . . . You can visit American Fraternal Alliance webpage at http://fraternalalliance.org and under the Meeting menu, click on Join Hands Day for more ideas. The Home Office again will offer the $100 incentive to all lodges that register their project with the Home Office. You can do this by completing the Join Hands Day flyer and returning it to the SPJST Home Office. Again, this year, American Fraternal Alliance is asking not to register your projects on their website prior to Join Hands Day. They are asking that you share stories of your projects, including and

especially, photos on its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/fraternalalliance. If you have any questions, you can contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at tammym@spjst.com or (800) 727-7578 or myself at frankh@spjst.com or my cell phone (254) 534-0681.

Happy Valentine’s Day – February 14 When did it all start? There are various theories on the origin of Valentine's Day, but the most popular dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270 A.D. Claudius didn't want men to marry during wartime because he believed single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on February 14. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailer’s daughter, signing it, “From your Valentine.” Sound familiar? Here are some more fun facts about Valentine’s Day: • Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine's Day in the late 1800s. • More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine’s Day.

Remember your loved ones on Valentine’s Day! We are here to help if you need assistance. Please feel free to contact me at (254) 534-0681 or email frankh@spjst.com. You can also contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez by telephone - (800) 727- 7578 or (254) 773-1575 or email - tammym@spjst.com. Your District FAC is also available to assist you. Education and Nature Center Improves Zip Line Take Down Area

SPJST Education and Nature Center Executive Director John Hoelscher reports that he has been working on a safer and better take down area for the zip lines. “Anyone who has ever taken down on zips knows how hard it was to carry the 10-foot A-frame ladder back and forth between the two lines,” John says. “Not only was it hard moving the ladder back and forth during the really hot summer months, it was

always kind of awkward having two people standing on the same ladder.” This new design will allow the person coming down the zip line to walk up on stairs to a platform and the person taking down to easily roll the staircase into position and solid footing while unattaching the zip line’s lanyards from the participant’s harness. “A big thanks to Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club for

making many small donations from their tip jar to the SPJST ENC that eventually added up to enough for the ENC to purchase the materials needed to complete this project,” John adds. “There are still more finishing touches to do to this take down area, but I wanted to go ahead and share what small donations add up to become.” —SPJST—

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 held its first meeting of 2015 on January 13 with 49 members including men attending. Missing were several regulars who were under the weather. New President Cathy Simmank led the group reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and she welcomed guests for the day. Carolyn Irby brought Louise Collins, and Sunny Kercho brought her husband Stephen. We enjoyed having them and invite them to be with us again. Vice President Theretta Praslicka shared a sweet message followed by one of her thoughtful prayers. Those missing were our beloved Gloria Farek who was reported as “under the weather.” We were shocked to learn the next afternoon that she had passed away peacefully earlier in the day. God’s gain is certainly the world’s loss, and we will miss her more than words can convey. We were also given a report on Mary Ann Kozel who had been taken to Baylor All Saints hospital with several health issues. It is my understanding that she is now recovering at home from her ailments. Theresa Clay and Lois Smith were there with smiles on after recovering from their recent health problems. Minutes were reviewed with no additions or changes, and the financial report was given by Margaret Laymance. Also as Sunshine Chairman, Margaret announced that she sent cards to Stanley and Betty Krenek, Theresa Clay, Monica Willenburg, and Don Morbitzer. There may have been others who were under the weather, but yours truly didn’t get the message. Just know that your lady friends in the

Circle are praying for each of you daily during your difficult times. Since there was not a business meeting in December, the topic of donations was revisited. Although we have given to several local charities in the past, it was determined that we would see if there was something in particular that the lodge could use. A motion was made and passed that the Ladies Circle would donate to the lodge. Also, we discussed and voted on the purchase of a karaoke machine for the Ladies Circle to use. A committee consisting of Marlene Bass, Mary Ann Adcock, and Pauline Morbitzer will research costs, etc. More information will be shared on these projects next month. The topic of “dues” was brought up. Dues have been the same for at least the past four years. While the discussion was lengthy, the bottom line is that dues are going up to $5 for 2015, and should be paid before the March meeting. We are trying to keep them reasonable and affordable. No one had signed up to be hostesses for January; however, quite a few of the ladies pitched in and took care of the kitchen. Thanks went out to Marlene Bass, Janet Basham, Kitty Rippin, Bessie Ellsworth, Christina Apperson, and Wanda Moree for volunteering their time. Oh, and we must never leave Garland Ellsworth out of the mix. He is, after all, the official kitchen cleaner-upper! Thank goodness. As we moved along, our birthday celebrants were recognized and serenaded. We had Bessie Ellsworth, Theresa Clay, Lois Smith, Catherine Ann Davis, Darlene Tompkins, Kitty Rippin, Robert Kurtnick, Ann Cooksey, and Lorinda Manasco. What a wonderful way to start off the year. Everyone was in attendance. There is always much laughter and excitement for those who are picked for door prizes. There was everything in the world imaginable—candles, lotions, and on and on. Theretta closed the meeting with a story and a prayer. Then it was on to lunch with the birthday “babies” leading the way. As always, the Ladies Circle welcomes everyone to join our meetings and enjoy the fellowship we have with each other. See you in February. An FYI Officers for 2015 are:

President Cathy Simmank Vice President Theretta Praslicka Secretary Joan Shropshire

Dear Youth Leaders, I’m excited! The District Youth Development Workshops and the Youth Leaders Retreat are just around the corner! A lot of important ground will get covered at these sessions — everything from Youth Achievement Day, summer camp, and team building to topics covering youth club leadership, fundraising, socials, and charity projects. Eyeglasses and Cell Phone Donations Did you know that SPJST collects old eyeglasses and hearing aid donations? For those of you who have sent these items in, please keep your donations coming. For those of you who are just learning about this ongoing collection effort that SPJST is a part of, please start collecting today. The actual program is being run through the Houston Eyeglass Center and the University of Houston. The reconditioned eyewear is redistributed throughout the United States and the world, and the repairable cell phones are given to various care shelters throughout the country. Thanks to your efforts, we have already helped many people through this program and hope to help many more in the future.

Pull Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House The continuing support of sending pull tabs in for the Ronald McDonald House is also a worthy charity that members of SPJST have been helping to support. Ronald McDonald House representatives use the money from the sale of the can tabs to buy gas for their transportation vehicle and to buy much needed supplies for the house. I strongly encourage all SPJST youth clubs to save pull tabs for this worthy and ongoing project. Your youth club will receive a thank you letter from the Ronald McDonald House and the knowledge that they helped someone in need that really needed help. Please mark your donations clearly so I can make sure your group gets the proper recognition that it deserves. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Thanks to all of the young people and youth clubs who have contributed

to this wonderful project. SPJST has approximately 43,000 members! Can you imagine if every person donated just $1? Please be sure to donate to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and help support the academic achievements of your fellow brothers and sisters. All young people who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All young people who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. More importantly, you will have the knowledge that you helped a fellow SPJST member move one step closer to achieving their dreams, and one day that person will be you accepting your very own SPJST Scholarship. Please know that May 31, 2015, is the deadline to have your donation here and to receive credit for it.

FAOT Scholarship Applications The Fraternal Alliance Of Texas Scholarship Program is intended to recognize commitment to the fraternal ideal and to encourage and assist graduating seniors in furthering their education and helping them to achieve career goals. The application can be found at http://www.spjst.org/scholarships.html. Please encourage your graduating youth members to apply for this scholarship.

Mark Your Calendar: May 2 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2015 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years included baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, and a fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2015. The last few years we have seen a trend in Join Hands Day projects for youth clubs to help their mother lodges in fixing up their existing building. That’s great; however, this year, we are encouraging lodges and youth clubs to consider addressing Join Hands Day projects outside the lodge. When coming up with ideas for your project, try to do something that will be beneficial and important to your community as a whole. The SPJST Home Office will once again offer a $100 incentive to local lodges to apply in developing and/or promoting their project. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office. Start considering your project ideas and watch for registration information.

If your friend joins, your name will be put into a drawing for a prize. Your friend will have until March 25 to join the youth club for you to be eligible for the drawing. Parents, this is a special night for you also. Drop your youth off at 5:30 p.m., pick them up at 7:30 p.m., and enjoy a couple of hours with your sweetie, whether it’s going out to eat or just having some quiet time. No worry about getting them fed for the night . . . pizza and drinks will be served to all attending. Of course, we will have door prizes and our famous dollar bill when the youth leave. We are looking forward to this traditional event. It is normally the best attended social, so let’s keep the tradition going. It has been quite some time since we have all been together. Let’s hope the weather will be good

The Tootsie Roll Man by d.knape

Here’s to the man who rolled his own a candy bar called Tootsie Roll

Let us give praise loudly extoll this man who made the Tootsie Roll

A gooey pole with taste so bold no trick or treat without Tootsie Rolls So sweet the man god rest his soul he’s gone, but not his Tootsie Roll.

•••

*Melvin Gordon, who led Tootsie Roll Industries Inc. for more than five decades, died Tuesday, January 20, 2014, in Boston after a brief illness, the company announced. He was 95. Gordon celebrated the Tootsie Roll’s 100th anniversary in 1996 by touring the Chicago factory with an Associated Press reporter. He scooped up one of the warm, gooey candies from the assembly line and tasted it, saying: “There’s nothing like a hot Tootsie Roll.” He boasted that Tootsie Rolls were almost indestructible. “Nothing can happen to a Tootsie Roll. We have some that were made in 1938 that we still eat,” Gordon said. “If you can’t bite it when it’s that old, you certainly can lick it.” Tootsie Rolls were invented in 1896 by New York City candymaker Leo Hirshfield, who named it for his five-year-old daughter, Clara, his little Tootsie. Tootsie Pops, which are lollipops with Tootsie Roll centers, have been around for more than 80 years. —SPJST—

Irene graduated from Draughons Business School Irene Veit and worked at Home State Bank in Westhoff for many years. Upon leaving the bank, she moved to the Sample Community to stay home and raise her children. She and Arthur could travel more miles in a day than anyone, and see everything. Irene also loved a new shiny car or a good used Cadillac. Most of all, she enjoyed her family, the simple things of country life, and being a great mother and so much more without asking for anything in return. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 125, Westhoff.
