When the fund reaches $10,000, SPJST will begin awarding scholarships in his name. Brother Klinkovsky had 23 years of service with the Home Office. One Fall Leads to Fear of Falling by Georgia Fitzhugh Lodge 25, Ennis

Any person who is over 75 years old is vulnerable to become a fall victim. Persons who have diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and who have had a stroke are most likely to fall because of their health conditions. Studies show that a quarter of all falls cause fractures to bones, most often hip fractures. And, one fall often leads to more falls, unfortunately. What is the most common, preventable injury that can restrict one’s independence at home? Falls are often the cause of injury, even life-endangering injuries, and they are often unreported and preventable. No one plans to fall. A fall just happens; it is not planned. And often, it is at a time when you are distracted, in a hurry, and unprepared to call for help.

One Fall Leads to Fear of Falling. Persons who have fallen can develop fear of falling. This leads them and their caregivers to restrict activities in their home and outside the home. This is depressing for everyone concerned. It certainly leads one to worry, and to think that their health is a bigger problem than it really is. Often, this attitude causes one to become socially withdrawn and isolated. If you can’t safely leave your own house, or safely take a bath and wash your hair, then going to the store, or going to church, or having visitors come over are no longer in your plans. At the same time, sitting in bed is not the answer to preventing falls either. Reduced activity leads to reduced strength and poorer balance. In turn, those lead to increased disability and increased dependence. Caregivers face more stress in trying to persuade the patient to get out of bed and participate in life. Everyone in the house has a poorer quality of life and increased stress.

Simple Steps Toward Preventing Falls Step One First, ask your doctor to assess the person’s health and look for conditions that might make falling likely. Ask your doctor to review all medications, particularly antidepressants and tranquilizers. Are they necessary? Do they cause dizziness or affect alertness? Know the side effects of medications. Can changes be made in medications, dosage, or scheduling which would help? Is the patient using

alcohol in addition to their medications? Ask the doctor to check the patient’s blood pressure, and the change in blood pressure when going from sitting to standing. Get the patient’s vision checked regularly and update their eyeglasses. Ask the doctor about the patient’s level of understanding of dangers. Dementia can make a person constantly fearful and suspicious, or it can cause them to be oblivious to obvious dangers. Ask a physical therapist to check the patient’s balance and walking. Do they need a cane or a walker? Do they use the one they have correctly? A P.T. can teach them how. Your physician and your home health care nurse and therapists are invaluable sources of information and help. Step Two Take a look around your house. Is your loved one’s bedroom and bathroom upstairs? Why not move their bedroom and bathroom downstairs on the ground floor? Are there grab bars in the bathroom around the tub and toilet? Grab bars should be install by professionals. Consider placing them beside dressing areas, sinks, toilets, kitchen sinks, on the walls of hallways, etc. Can you remove slip-hazards from the paths they frequently walk around the house? Throw-rugs, electric cords, clutter, shoes, toys, water spills in front of sinks, etc. Ask your kids to get down on the floor to spot these and pick up as many as they find every day. (And, maybe, the kids will learn to pick up after themselves.) Check the lighting in those well-

VӖSTNÍK

walked paths through your home. Can the lighting be brighter? Can the light switch be easily reached? Could the lights be made motion-sensitive so when someone enters the room, the light turns on? Does the entrance and exit you use need handrails to make it safer? A ramp? A chair lift? There are many ways to modify entrances. It is absolutely essential to have a safe way to exit the house in an emergency! Ask an occupational therapist to help you evaluate the safety of your home for your daily activities. One study stated that after patients received a home safety mobility assessment of their homes, there was a 15 percent decrease in falls at the homes of those patients. For more information about home safety, see the checklist offered at the website of Rebuilding Together and download the Rebuilding Together Aging in Place and Safe at Home Checklist. Rebuilding Together is a nationwide non-profit organization which provides critical repairs, accessibility modifications and energy efficient upgrades to low-income homes and community centers at no cost to service recipients. Don’t be trapped by a fear of falling. You can make changes in your home, in your health, and in your attitude which make a difference! She, along with her family, have been caregivers for 13 years and currently writes articles for her website Caregiver-Aid.com. —SPJST—

To: Melanie and David Nauert “Special” is the word that best describes you two! “Special” describes you who act from the heart and keep in mind the hearts of others. “Special” is someone who is admired and precious that can never be replaced. But God will take care of you and never leave you. He is there to cast sunlight into all of your darkened shadows, to send encouragement through the love of friends and family, and to replace your weariness with new hope. You two are two of the strongest people I know. You are strong facing the daily trials of life, sometimes with a tear, but always with your head held high as the new day dawns. “Special?” Yes - this is the best word that describes you both as we continue to pray and think of you as you quickly recover from your injuries. District Two youth valentine skating party this Saturday

Dear District Two Youth Members, It is time for youth and friends to get together for our first activity of 2015. The Annual District Two Skating Party will be held on the evening of Valentine’s Day—this Saturday, February 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Wheels Family Skating Center. It is located in Temple at 814 North 31st Street. A theme has been added to this activity—“Date Night.” We are hoping each of you will bring a friend as your date and also invite them to become a member of your youth club. If your friend joins, your name will be put into a drawing for a prize. Your friend will have until March 25 to join the youth club for you to be eligible for the drawing. Parents, this is a special night for you also. Drop your youth off at 5:30 p.m., pick them up at 7:30 p.m., and enjoy a couple of hours with your sweetie, whether it’s going out to eat or just having some quiet time. No worry about getting them fed for the night . . . pizza and drinks will be served to all attending. Of course, we will have door prizes and our famous dollar bill when the youth leave. We are looking forward to this traditional event. It is normally the best attended social, so let’s keep the tradition going. It has been quite some time since we have all been together. Let’s hope the weather will be good with no prediction for ice, as we had to cancel our last activity. By the way, with the busy schedules fast ap-

proaching, the lock-in has been rescheduled for November 13. (We plan ahead!) Have a great 2015, and stay dry and warm. We look forward to seeing you on Valentine’s Day! Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Shares Member Activities

Dear Readers, Winter is here; the holidays have come and gone; and we’ve zoomed through January. It’s hard to believe the year is 2015. I remember when I was in first grade at St. John Catholic school how our religion teacher, Sister Anna Catherine of Sienna, talked about the far-off year of 2000. I calculated in my head that I would be an ancient age of 43! Not so ancient! Our members have been caught up in a lot of interesting events that I’ll share with our readers. The number one excitement for Ennis is that our Lions captured the 2014 Texas 5A Division II State Championship! The Dvorak, Nelson, Tignor, and Holland families all at-

tended the game at AT&T Stadium and witnessed the fifth time that our Lions had won a state championship for Ennis! Members Greg Crow played on the 1973 team; Jake Holland in 2001; and Brandon Martinek and Logan Lipscomb in 2014. Both Paige and April are cheerleaders for the current state champs. A ticker-tape parade was held January 17 which honored current and past team members. Devin has a new title now —

“Uncle Devin.” Magnolia Joan Young was born to Malerie and Dwayne in Memphis, Tennessee. Proud first time, great-grandma is our assistant youth leader, Betty Macalik. Congrats! The Drostes went skiing to Colorado for the holidays. Clark found some warm weather and went scuba diving during Christmas break. Take me with you next time! Our first meeting of this year was held January 11. We discussed the lodge’s fundraiser which will be held February 14. Our youth will sell sandwiches that evening. Everyone was also reminded to start collecting items for our garage sale which will be held in April. Anyone reading this who has items that need to be picked up, please call me at (469) 337-2284. Our February meeting is scheduled for February 8. See you then! Fraternally yours, Rita Holland, Youth Leader —SPJST—

Cindy Belknap ukončila a rozeslala nové číslo oběžníku. Program oslav bude zahájen v deset hodin dopoledne a ukončen v pět hodin odpoledne, po 15 minutách by měla začít schůze nadace.

Zahrál na výborně naladěném a dobře znějícím nástroji skladby Jana Ladislava Duška, Jana Huga Voříška, Frederyka Chopina, Franze Liszta, Antonína Dvořáka a Bedřicha Smetany. —SPJST—

Red, Red, Red

Welcome to SoundCzech, the Czech language series in which you can learn Czech phrases and idioms through song lyrics.

Read along or Listen RealAudio: 16kbps32kbps; Download: MP3.

The focus will be on all things red. The Czech word for red is červená. The song we will refer to is “Zavři oči když se červenám” or “Close Your Eyes When I Blush” by Ilona Csáková. To blush or turn red in the face in Czech is červenat se. If you are referring to the color red, you use the feminine form — červená — as the Czech word for color — barva — is also a feminine noun. The months June and July both carry the word red in their root: červen and červenec. And as those two months tend to be pretty hot and

sunny, you might turn red as a lobster — červený jako rak — if you are outside for too long, which might be a bit more permanent than just blushing, like our singer. A number of fruit and vegetables also carry the word red in them, such as červený rybíz - red-currant; or červená řepa - beets. And a robin in Czech is a červenka, possibly because of its red feathers. But careful, in Czech, the word red is not used to talk about red or ginger

hair; instead, you say zrzavé vlasy. And if the sky turns a beautiful pink color just before sunset, we call it červánky. Which hopefully, we will see quite a lot of this June and July. And with that, I leave you. Thank you, and na shledanou. — Sarah Borufka
