This Week’s Funny Thanks to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi President Mark Rebecek for this week’s humor! (And, just a reminder . . . the 2015 SPJST Corpus Christi Getaway is only five months away on August 7 to 9! More details coming soon.) Two blondes were sitting outside a coffee shop sipping their lattes when a large flatbed truck passed by loaded with layers of sod. “I’m going to do that when I win the lottery” said Blonde No. 1. “Do what?” asked Blonde No. 2. “Send my lawn out to be mowed.” —SPJST—

I enjoyed receiving this picture from past Lodge 13, Dime Box Youth Club member Emily (Jatzlau) Ordogne last week. Emily says her husband brought the Vestnik in from the mail. Their son Travis immediately grabbed it, went to the couch, and started reading it. I think this is fantastic . . . getting young Travis familiar with SPJST through the Vestnik! Thank you, Emily, for sharing.

State FAC Shares March Fraternal Updates

Lodge Leaders Workshop Below are the remaining scheduled dates for Lodge Leaders Workshops. Please check the Vestnik for any additions as well as date and time changes. Lodge Officers, please check your calendar and make plans to attend one of the workshops. We ask all lodge officers attending the workshop to please RSVP with Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez by email or phone. Tammy’s email address is tammym@spjst.com, and she can be reached at (800) 727-7578. Meal will be provided. Please know that we also conduct these sessions for your lodge on a first come, first served basis. During the presentation, we review the 12 discussion topics outlined in the new Model Lodge Best Practices Guide. It’s an opportunity for you and your fellow lodge leaders and members to address a host of topics reluctant to fielding an effective lodge fraternal program. District One—Thursday, March 26, Lodge 17, New Tabor at 6:30 p.m. District Three—Saturday, March 14, Lodge 183, Arlington at 10 a.m.

District Four—Friday, April 24 Abilene, Texas—To Be Announced

Save the Date: Saturday May 2 The 2015 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! Make plans to join in the fun and festivities of the 2015 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration to be held Saturday, May 2 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Seaton Star Hall is located approximately seven miles east of Temple on Highway 53. What kind of event will it be? There will be cars! And more cars! There will be Czech heritage displays, music, and entertainment. Admission is free. Donations and proceeds generated from event underwriters as well as from the silent and live auctions will benefit the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, Texas, and the SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. It is no accident that the event coincides with Join Hands Day on May 2. If your lodge or youth club is still

looking for a Join Hands Day project, the 2015 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration could be the place for you! Booth space is available to all comers for $25 for a 10 by 10 space. To reserve a space for your lodge, youth club, business — or even for yourself — please contact State Youth Director Lynette Talasek at (800) 727-7578 or cell (254) 9310639. Consistently, the SPJST Car Show has been one of the premier car show events in the Greater Central Texas area. Based on past SPJST Car Shows, at least 36 classes of vehicles are expected to participate in this year’s event. For car show information or serve as a show, please contact David Nauert at (254) 534-0809 or call Melanie Zavodny at (254) 5340807. Email melaniez@vvm.com. Out of town visitors may want to plan an overnight stay as this is also the weekend of the big Central Texas Air Show held at Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional Airport. Complete air show details may be found at http://centraltexasairshow.com

Lodges Invited to Apply For Join Hands Day Incentives May 2 marks the date for this year’s Join Hands Day. Join Hands Day is a program of the American Fraternal Alliance. The 125-year old organization unites not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies that operate in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. We hope your lodge has discussed plans for a project to involve youth, adults, and/or other organizations to make improvements in your community. This year, SPJST wants lodges to invite other community organizations such as Lions Club, Volunteer Fire Departments, Kiwanis, Boy/Girl Scouts. You can visit American Fraternal Alliance’s webpage for some great ideas at the web link below. https://netforum.avectra.com/eWeb/D ynamicPage.aspx?Site=AFALLIANCE&WebCode=JoinHandsDay. The Home Office again will offer the $100 incentive to all lodges that register their project with the Home Office. You can do this by completing the Join Hands Day flyer and returning it to the SPJST Home Office. This year, American Fraternal Alliance is asking not to register your projects

on their website prior to Join Hands Day. They are asking that you share stories of your projects, including and especially, photos on their Facebook page at facebook.com/fraternalalliance. If you have any questions, you can contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at tammym@spjst.com or (800) 727-7578 or me at frankh@spjst.com or my cell phone (254) 534-0681.

District Spring Meetings District spring meetings are right around the corner and will begin in March. These meetings are informative, and your participation and input is very important for the success of SPJST and your district. What better time to meet fellow SPJST members in your district. Please plan to attend the meeting in your district. They are: District One—Sunday, April 26 Lodge 9, Snook District Two—Sunday, March 15 Lodge 29, Taylor District Three—Sunday, April 26 Lodge 6, Cottonwood District Four—Sunday, April 12 Lodge 49, Rowena District Five—Sunday, April 12 Lodge 88, Houston District Six—Sunday, March 15 Lodge 32, Victoria District Seven—Sunday, March 29 Lodge 185, New Braunfels

FAC Reporting Requirements In 2014, fraternal activities coordinators were introduced to the new fraternal hours reporting website www.fraternalsgive.org. The website eliminated the need for the three-part forms that have been used by the SPJST for a number of years. The process also eliminated the necessity of filing both the FAC Mid-Year report and FAC Annual Report. I am happy to report some stats from using www.fraternalsgive.org. Out of the 85 active lodges, 63 lodges turned in fraternal hours and out of the 63 lodges, 52 entered their own fraternal hours on the website, 11 mailed in data sheets to be entered at the Home Office, and 22 lodges did not turn in fraternal hours to the Home Office. That’s great for the first year! For 2014, there were 156 donations by lodges made; 1,019 member activities; and 551 service projects/community outreach projects. So many lodges made big differences in their communities. On the fraternalsgive.org front page, you will find that 2014 Community Service Highlights

SPJST’s 10 lodges and the projects they conducted. Fraternal Activities Coordinators and other officers that are entering fraternal hours, please know that American Fraternal Alliance has added two demo videos on using the www.fraternalsgive.org website. I strongly recommend you check them out. You will find the demo videos under Reporting, then look for, “NEW! – Click here to view two video demos of how to use fraternalsgive.org.” If you have questions or need your login name or password, please give me a call (254) 534-0681 or email me at frankh@spjst.com.

Member Referrals Wanted: Participate in the Monthly Prize Drawing! When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there is no substitute for member referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he or she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest. Monthly Contests! All referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Walmart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits the SPJST by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge. On a related note, SPJST is looking for men and women who believe in the fraternal ideal and would like to consider the benefits of being an SPJST Sales Agent. Please see the back page of this week’s Vestnik inviting prospective sales agents to apply.

Qualify for the Drawing at the 2016 Banquet! All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Walmart gift cards to be awarded at the SPJST Awards Banquet in 2016. The referral program was outlined in last week’s February 25 Vestnik. If you have any questions, please contact me for more information at frankh@spjst.com or call me at (254) 534-0681.

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive As we head into the final month for our 2015 scholarship drive, now is the time to send in your contribution to the Home Office. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their ed-

ucation. Since its inception in 1982, the Scholarship Program has presented SPJST scholars with over 2,100 scholarships valued at more than $1.5 million. Our goal this year is to raise $20,000. This is in addition to the allocation the Supreme Lodge has made. Any amount you submit will be greatly appreciated.

State 42 Domino Tournament The State 42 Domino Tournament will be hosted by Lodge 49, Rowena on April 11. Please preregister by April 6 so I can let the host lodge know how much food to prepare for lunch. We do accept walk-ins as well. We hope to see many of our domino players in attendance along with nonmembers. End of Summer Getaway It is not too early to start planning for the Corpus Christi Getaway on August 7, 8, and 9. This event gets bigger and better each year. Last year, approximately 340 men, women, boys, and girls from across the state came out to enjoy the weekend fraternal celebration. Once again, the 2015 celebration commences with the Aloha Party on Friday night. In addition to the Friday golf tournament, plans are being made

to also host the deep-sea fishing outing for those wanting to get a jump on the weekend fun. This year, we will have Dramamine for the fishermen. Saturday’s events will once again include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42, bunco, and an evening party. This year, the Saturday night festivities will take on a “Mardi Gras – Let the Good Times Roll” flavor! Additional details will be printed in the Vestnik as they become available. Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met Thursday, February 12, 2015, at the Sokol Club Room. Pat Fowler, Ann Clagett, Irene Prachyl, and I arrived around 8 a.m.

We made coffee and stretched Pat Fowler’s beautiful quilt. It had fence posts all around with flowers in the center, and the colors were really pretty. Thank you to all our faithful quilters for coming. By lunchtime, we had 18 members and one guest Karen Haskovec. We

This is our third year volunteering to help wrap gifts. Also, we donated wrapping paper, tape, and gift tags. I also donated seven wrapped gifts for women. were glad to have you, and we hope you come again. We quilted, visited then President Irene led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed chili made by Ann, chips and cheese, and Ginny brought a pot of black-eyed peas and many other dishes. It was all delicious. Thank you, everyone, and thank you to the cleanup crew. They said we do not need any supplies. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Eleanora Pelzel, Libbie Wisniewski, David Santos, son-in-law of Martha Ritchey, and Joe Kostak, Jr. The “Our Father” was said for all the above and for all our sick members. As Secretary Dolores Vrana was sick and unable to attend, no minutes were read. Get well soon, Dolores. Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek was working at the flower shop, helping out for Valentine’s Day so President Irene read her report. President Irene had Treasurer Dorothy go back for last year 2014 and list how much we collected for dues, memorials, 50-50 game, donations for quilting, regular raffles, Christmas raffle, and other miscellaneous collections then our expenses. President Irene was pleased we came out ahead last year. Thank you, everyone, who helped make this possible. Ginny didn’t have any notes to read, but she did read three humorous articles that we all enjoyed. Sunshine Lady Ann announced our February birthday celebrants - Ann Tupy and Sidney Bridewell. As neither were present, we didn’t sing. Ann did have a birthday card to sign for Sidney and sympathy cards to Libbie Wisniewski and Eleanora Pelzel families. Quilt scheduler Pat announced we will quilt for President Irene in March, Lil in April, Lavina in May, and in June - Dorothy J. President Irene started her tee-shirt quilt top workshop. It all worked out really great. Kay Lynn, Cheryl Prachyl, Lavina, and I got the first step going. Next month, she will show us the next step. Lil Kosarek took home the quilt top that Bessie Laznovsky donated to our Circle to see if she had material at home for the bottom. I think she has something that will match. President Irene read an article, “15 Reasons Why We Should Buy Fabric.” I can’t write them all, one reason, I don’t remember them all. One reason was God made me do it. They were all

really cute. President Irene also announced that Joe Kostak - remember he washes dishes for us sometimes - his son Joe, Jr. passed away. We were all saddened by this; he was so young. The visitation was Thursday evening and the funeral was Friday in Lancaster. I went to the visitation with Liz Krajca. He had so many beautiful flowers. I haven’t seen that many in a long time. Our sympathy to you Joe and your family from all of us. We were happy to have Karen Haskoveck visit with us. She brought a beautiful, old, handmade quilt from her husband’s grandmother Mildred Laznovsky Haskoveck. The stitches were all so small and pretty. We hope Karen visits with us again soon. We also had another visitor Carolyn Crow, and we hope she comes again also. I’m happy to mention for Kay Lynn Kovar that she has retired from teaching school and can attend all our meetings. How great to have you every month! I’m sorry to say we have been attending too many funerals. First, our member Eleanora Pelzel. She had a beautiful visitation and mass. On her casket, she didn’t have flowers. She had made a quilt for herself to use. It had red in it, and she had a red dress on which looked really beautiful. I

know that would have made her happy. Eleanora also had two white roses on top of her quilt. Next, Libbie Wisniewski’s funeral was also beautiful. It was small, but very nice. We will miss our two member sisters. May they rest in peace. I want to mention that at Libbie Wisniewski’s funeral, a man from behind tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was Georgie Morales. He reads my Věstník articles and enjoys them. We visited for a long while, even talked some Czech. He went on a trip to the Czech Republic with my first cousin Lorraine Vrla Ventrca and her husband Johnny. It sounded as if they had a wonderful time. I have called Lorraine, but they must be on another trip as I didn’t get her. I am so glad you introduced yourself Mr. Arthur Fowler. I enjoyed your visit so much. Come to Ennis again sometimes. We missed Maggie Holy. I understand her mom is sick, and I think she is in the hospital. We hope she gets well soon. We are glad to see Irene is doing well after her carpal tunnel surgery. Melanie, all of our members are wishing you a speedy recovery and remembering you in our prayers. Everyone, stay well and warm. We’ll see you all Thursday, March 12. We will quilt, have our meeting and lunch, and the 50-50 dollar game. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

This section is dedicated to the youth of SPJST. As part of its membership benefits, SPJST offers a statewide youth program. State Youth Director shares March updates

Dear Youth Leaders, On February 1, 2015, District Youth Counselors and Assistants met for their spring meeting at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. I am happy to report that we confirmed all district camp dates and made changes to the SPJST Youth Handbook. We completed all new business on the agenda. The Fall DYC Meeting is scheduled for September 25 and 26 and will be hosted by District Four. Congratulations to all of the winners in the Friendship 2013 incentive program! I enjoyed visiting with many of our members at the SPJST Awards Banquet held January 31 in Temple and was happy to see the winning youth clubs receive checks. Now, let’s focus on the SPJST “Let The Good Times Roll!” membership drive! I hope to see each and every

youth leader come up to the front of the auditorium and accept an award on behalf of their youth club as well as themselves. This year, SPJST has included a youth leader incentive! Your youth club must meet the normal requirements and if your youth club average attendance increases for the year by five active members, the youth leader will receive a $100 incentive. But, wait . . . that’s not all! If your youth club average attendance increases for the year by 10 or more active youth members, the youth leader will receive a $200 incentive. If you have any questions on this new incentive, please feel free to give me a call. Please remind your youth members to use the referral cards for new members. All referral cards received by the SPJST Home Office during the month will go into a drawing for three $25 Walmart gift cards. The person making the referral also benefits by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge! All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for

five $100 Walmart gift cards to be awarded at the SPJST Awards Banquet in 2016. Please help us to ensure that the leads that your youth members pass on are quality leads. We would not want any sales agent to devote precious time calling on unqualified leads. A good referral is someone who an SPJST member has spoken with about joining. In visiting with your prospective lead, make sure that he or she knows that an SPJST sales agent will call them. Also, remind your club members about the “Top Youth Club in District” Award. It is a swimming, etc. party for the leader and youth members (not to exceed $200). You can do it! Thanks to Our Tee-Shirt Contest Participants This year’s contest attracted more than 86 wonderful entries. Thanks to everyone who entered and congratulations to the winners. Grand prize winner is Bethany Baker of Lodge 30,

9:30 a.m., and the meeting will start at 10 a.m. There will be a light lunch of sandwiches and salad provided at noon. This will be a fun and informative meeting. I look forward to spending time with you. I plan to wrap up the meeting by 4 p.m. Youth leaders who are planning to stay overnight will have time to go to their hotel, Holiday Inn, and get ready for our banquet which will be held in the ballroom at the Holiday Inn. All youth leaders and their assistants are encouraged to attend. If you are planning to bring a spouse or guest, please let me know and I will work with you on making arrangements. We’re going to cover a lot of ground at Saturday’s program, including the “Let The Good Times Roll!” as well as

the new youth leader incentive, and we will be covering several other topics as well. In addition to covering all of the regular topics such as rulebook changes and camp, we’ll also be addressing any questions that you may have about the youth program. This year, we are looking to reinvigorate you as a youth leader and get the creative juices flowing with special guest Mike Spiller. Included in the youth leader’s mailing is a registration form for the event. I would like to highly encourage you to stay and network with other youth leaders; however, if you do not plan on staying over, please indicate this on your registration form. If you do plan on staying and have a preference on who you would like to room with,

please identify that person or group on your registration form. If you don’t, I will get to pick for you! For you new youth leaders, your overnight accommodations will be taken care of by SPJST on Saturday, March 21 and a hot breakfast is provided before you head home on Sunday. In the meantime, if you have any questions about the Youth Leader Retreat, please feel free to contact me.

2015 Leaders-In-Training Retreat Leaders-In-Training Retreat will be at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on June 12 to 14. Registration will start at 1 p.m., and camp activities will get rolling. We will be covering the duties of an LIT at camp. This will give LITs the opportunity to acquire some great skills and help them be an important asset to their district camps. I won’t give anything away, but I’ll tell you some great activities are being planned. LITs must attend this event in order to be eligible to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders with their youth clubs throughout the year. Who’s eligible to be a Leader-InTraining? LITs are active high schoolaged youth who have been approved by their youth leader and District Youth Counselor as responsible and mature enough to be an LIT. The youth club member may attend the LIT workshop after completing a Leader-In-Training application. Forms are available from youth leaders and District Youth Counselors and are due no later than May 15.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive There’s still time for youth club members to send in donations for this year’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Thanks to all of the youth and youth clubs who have contributed to this wonderful project. All youth who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All youth who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. May 31 is the deadline to receive credit.

Mark Your Calendar: May 2 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2015 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years include baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizen programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects and fundraisers for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2015. The main thing —

at this point — is committing to doing something. When coming up with ideas for your project, try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me. Again, this year, the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting your project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office prior to Join Hands Day. The Home Office will then forward a check to the lodges who have registered.

2015 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration Make plans to join in the fun and festivities of the 2015 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration to be held Saturday, May 2 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Seaton Star Hall is located approximately seven miles east of Temple on Highway 53. There will be cars! And more cars! There will be Czech heritage displays, arts and crafts vendors, music and showcase entertainment. If your lodge or youth club is still looking for a Join Hands Day project, the 2015 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration could be the place for you! Booth space is available to all arts, crafts, and service vendors for $25 for a 10 by 10 space. To reserve a space for your lodge, youth club, business — or even for yourself — please contact State Youth Director Lynette Talasek (800) 727-7578 or locally at (254) 7731575. Consistently, the SPJST Car Show has been one of the premier car show events in the Greater Central Texas area. Based on past SPJST Car Shows, at least 36 classes of vehicles are expected to participate in this year’s event. For car show information or serve as a judge, please contact David Nauert at (254) 534-0809 or call Melanie Zavodny at (254) 534-0807. Email melaniez@vvm.com. Rosenberg Rotary Club expresses thanks to SPJST Lodge 81, Needville Youth Club

Rosenberg Rotary Club would like to commend SPJST Lodge 81, Needville Youth Club. The youth club helped work the Rosenberg Rotary Club annual Gumbo Festival. Their help was invaluable. We could not have done this event without them. The youth helped put armbands as people entered. The younger ones filled cups with ice and filled with tea. Others put desserts out on plates and served guests. We once again had a very successful event. The SPJST youth club was a key part of Rotary’s success. The group members were very hard workers and never had to be asked to perform a task more than once, and they excelled at their job. We truly appreciate their hard work and effort at the Gumbo Festival. Thanks to Samantha Dostal, Brady Dostal, Elizabeth Dostal, Evan Stavinoha, Maxx Stavinoha, Baley Stavinoha, Brianna Nesvadba, Anna Gadway, and Madison Schultz. The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self.” That is what SPJST Lodge 81, Youth Club truly personified. Thanks, Rosenberg Rotary Club —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Shares Christmas, Czech Fest, Valentine’s Day Fun Dear Vestnik Readers, I'm sorry I haven’t written a letter in a long time. I was too busy doing school stuff. First of all, I would like to tell you about Christmas. On Christmas Eve, my dad’s family came over. That includes Uncle Tim, Aunt Kimberly, Grandma, and Grandpa, Aunt Dolores, Uncle Winford, and my cousins Rene, Sara, Adam, and my cousin who’s in the Navy - Trey. We all had a great time. I got a lot of presents. Everybody had a fantastic time. On Christmas Day, we went to church. Also on Christmas Day, we went to my mom’s cousin’s

house. We had a big feast, and the desserts were the best desserts I have ever tasted in my life. Then in the afternoon when it was dark, we went to go look at Christmas lights. They were so pretty. One of them had lights dancing to a radio station. Second, I would like to tell you about Czech Fest. I had a lot of fun there. I danced with my daddy a lot of times. The bands that played were great. The food was yummy, too. We all had a lot of fun. Last, but not least, I would like to tell you about Valentine’s Day. At school, we had a valentine party, and my daddy surprised me and went to it. We had a

great time and got a lot of candy. My school also had a valentine dance. My friend Victoria and I stayed together and danced together. After a while, my other friend Olivia showed up. We all had loads of fun together. I really hope I can write more letters to y’all, but I don’t have the time to do it because of school. Write to you later. Sincerely, Misty Dvorak, age 11 —SPJST—

And, how exciting for our three guests who also won a door prize—Avery Tarbet, Jordan Brashear, and Jack Justice. Thank you, Zoe Talasek, for donating her $5 to be

put back into the drawing. And, yet other door prizes from Lodge 182, Falls County—made by the Beckendorf girls—were given out. Of course, made by those four cute girls, only girl’s names were drawn. The cute pink flower hair clips were won by Brenna Correll, Kyndall Carroll, Emma Regan, Alyssa Gray, Bella Mitchan, Kylar Evans, Ella Washam, Bayla Edmondson, and Kara Kaderka. Bailee Beckendorf’s name was also drawn, but since she had one of the cute clips in her hair, she put it back into the drawing. What a fun night for prizes! Those of you who attend our district outings, and especially the skating party, know that all our youth are win-

ners. Yes, that famous one dollar bill was given out to each youth as they left. It was great to see everyone again. It had been awhile since we were all together as a district. I am looking forward to all the upcoming activities.

Caring About Others And now to a very touching story of our thoughtful SPJST youth . . . The Thursday prior to the skating party, a family from District Two lost their home and belongings to a fire. They had been very active in the youth program—the mom was a former youth leader; dad involved with the mother lodge; and son, a youth club member. I asked that this family be kept in every-

one’s prayers. Adults began giving when we passed a cup around to help them. We all know the saying “kids don’t miss a thing.” How true it was that night. Without a word to any of them or the cup nowhere in sight, one youth, as he was walking out the door with his dollar in hand, asked if he could give his “dollar bill” to his friend whose house had burned. The cup began overflowing with dollar bills and those $5 door prizes. What more can I say? I am so blessed to have these youth and parents in SPJST District Two. Thank you for your caring about others. Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

• Zdeněk Burian •

By Ivo Marek Choceň, Czech Republic

Zdeněk Burian (hereinafter ZB) was a g r e a t C z e c h painter and illustrator of adventure books and on prehist o r y themed books. ZB was born in Kopřivnice on February 11, 1905. (February 2015 is the 110th anniversary of his birth.) Soon after his birth, Burian family moved to the city square in Štramberk, where the artist’s Museum is now located. For his extraordinary talent ZB, aged just 14, wrote to the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, and he was taken right to the second level. His colleagues were about six to eight years older than he was. His parents had not enough money for

his study at that time. He was often hungry and he had no where to sleep. He gained money with any help works on buildings or with a carrying of baggage for travelers. When he had no where to live, he spent a night under a railway bridge. As an illustrator, Burian has begun to live at 16 years. Charles University paleontologist Josef Augusta asked ZB to draw an image afterward a known skeleton of an extinct dinosaur. With great skill, ZB drew the dinosaur, and so a cooperation of both misters began in 1938-39. In Buran’s comprehensive work, he used sundry art techniques, e.g. drawing, oil painting, gouache, watercolor, pastel, and tempera. ZB illustrated adventure literature from authors such as Jack London, Karel May, Jules Verne, R. Kipling, Jaroslav Foglar, and D. Defoe. The artist’s illustrations are so impressive and unforgettable, because they are very reliable and perfect. No less famous have become ZB’s scientific drawings of prehistoric times, especially in books by Mr. Edward Štorch, for example, “Mammoths’ hunters.” ZB’s book illustrations about prehistoric times made perfect artistic reconstruction of

prehistoric extinct animals (from skeleton findings), plants, prehistoric landscapes and primeval people. Books with Burian’s illustrations, drawings, and paintings have been published in Europe, U.S.A, and in Japan, and translated in twenty languages. The artist so contributed to the global popularization of science of Paleontology. Dvůr Králové’s ZOO owns a collection of 147 Burian’s pictures, that have now been declared a cultural sight-seeing in 1993 and 1998. Burian’s pictures are displayed here in a gallery showing life’s evolution on Earth. The Gallery has the name “Prehistory through Zdeněk Burian’s eyes.” The artistic scientific picture reconstructions of ZB were models for two world-famous movies i.e. Godzilla (1954), and Journey to the Beginning of Time (1955). ZB’s work had influence on a l a t e r m o v i e Jurassic Park. The painter is professionally valued as one of the
