Heartfelt Sympathy Sincere sympathy is extended to Claims Specialist Dorothy Tomasek whose sister Levie Adamek, age 96, of Temple passed away on April 4, 2015. Funeral service was held April 8 in San Angelo. Get Well Soon, Ruth! We send get well wishes to Fraternal Department Assistant Ruth Hanusch who was recently hospitalized. Sister Ruth is doing better and is recovering at home.

Some Things are Not Always Fun Thank you again to each of you who has reached out to me with words of encouragement and inspiration as I continue on recovery road after the December 14 auto accident. Your caring thoughts and words are getting me through this. Things continue to improve in my little world as bones mend and my body heals. I am on the verge of completing another month in physical therapy. It’s not been very fun. I know that sometimes life is not fun, but we have to endure some things and keep striving because it will get better. It’s these not-so-fun times that will make me appreciate life a whole lot more. And I also think about the fact that I am able to now drive myself to physical therapy—that is huge compared to where I’ve been! I know that things could be a lot worse, and I’m just so thankful for every moment and every challenge. —SPJST—

Oldest grandson Matt and his family were unable to attend, but they are planning a trip to Texas soon. I stopped in to visit with Merel Kovar who lives in an assisted living home. lives. I asked her if she remembers Mary Ann Krivanek as she sent Merel her greetings, and she said, “Oh yes, I remember Mary Ann, and how is she.” I also mentioned Lydia’s 95th birthday party, and she was so pleased to hear about it. I mentioned more of the Friendship Club members. She seemed to remember them and said to tell everyone “hello.” In our bulletin on Sunday at St. Andrew’s Church, there was a “pray for our deceased” with Rose Cuba listed. When Rose, former Friendship Club member, moved to Wichita Falls, we stayed in touch and every time I sent her a card, she would always call. Several times I had all the Friendship Club members sign their names, and last time I had a call from Rose’s sister, Georgie, who told me that Rose can’t hear, but to just let her talk which I did. She talked about all the names on the card and how she looks at it several times each day and thinks of everyone and how much she misses everyone. Since I had Georgie’s phone number, I called and next day she returns my call. Rose died on April 2 of a massive heart attack, lived five more days with hospice looking after her. Georgie said the funeral was in Megargel, Texas, part of Wichita Falls, which was in the old family church where Rose grew up in and all the family is buried there in the cemetery. She said it was a very sweet funeral. Her grandnephew, Father Barry Cuba of Austin, Texas, had the service, that the family is large, and all the nieces and nephews all

brought a rose and put them on the casket. Rose would have been 95 years old on August 15, 2015. Georgie went on to say how much Rose missed her St. Andrew’s Church, her friends, and the Friendship Club members. Rose used to tell me that we were indirectly related, my aunt Josephine (Parma) Patril was her cousin so I always kept Rose informed of all the Parma news from Ennis. Our sympathy goes out to Rose’s family. May her soul rest in peace. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Leader reports on February meeting

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club members had their February meeting at the Whistle Stop Playground in Temple. It was a beautiful afternoon! We had our meeting under the pavilion. Then the kids enjoyed some play time. They played frisbee, threw a ball around, played on the playscape, and got to swing a little. A few also brought friends to see what SPJST was all about! It was a nice break from our typical meetings that we have indoors. Later that evening, we went to the skating party for District Two. Everyone enjoyed skating, socializing, eating pizza, and receiving door prizes. The skating party is definitely a district outing we all look forward to every year! Czech Heritage Museum Wants You To Play Taroks!

Tarok card playing and lessons have been going on at the Czech Heritage Museum since the fall of 2013. Jimmie and Carolyn Coufal of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton have been bringing their expertise to learning and playing the game. Tarok is recorded as one of the oldest card games known. Tradition has it that the game’s origin is in Italy around the Middle Ages. It is now widespread in Europe to include the Czech Republic, particularly in Moravia and Slovakia.

Jimmie and Carolyn are passionate about the game and want to share their knowledge to all players. We meet every first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m. at the museum. We want to invite new players of all ages to come and learn. We also want to invite those who are experts at the game to help teach or just to hone up on your playing skills.

Group Travels to Granger On March 28, a group from the Museum’s tarok players went to the

Third Annual Granger Tarok Tournament at St. Cyril and Methodius Recreation Center. Willie Cervenka has been sponsoring the event since its inception and obviously does a great job at organizing the event. Jimmie and Carolyn plus seven of the Museum players competed in the tournament. All together, there were 48 players. The tournament consisted of six one-hour rounds, a wonderful lunch, and trophies and prizes to end the day’s activities. Carolyn outshined us all (and Jimmie) to win the third

place trophy. Congratulations to her! And, by the way, Jimmie came in eighth place to receive a cash prize.

Join Us to Learn and Play Taroks at the Czech Heritage Museum Come and join us at the Czech Heritage Museum. Tarok is for all ages and all levels of play. Come on out on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m. at the Czech Heritage Museum, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple. —SPJST—

Texas high schools invited to participate

Blinn College to offer dual-credit Czech classes via distance learning

Dear SPJST Members, Greetings from the SPJST Home Office! I am writing to share information about an exciting language program that you may wish to communicate to high schools in your area. Blinn College is making online Czech classes available to high school students across the state through an online program in partnership with Texas school districts. I recently had the opportunity to visit with the organizers and as a result of that visit, prepared a summary article outlining the basis of the program and how it could enhance the learning opportunities of young people in your area who may have an interest in studying the Czech language. Please review the attached article and share it with the curriculum coordinator or other key high school officials in your area. If you have questions or need additional information, please know that I have included contact information for Becky Garlick, Blinn College’s Schulenburg campus director within the body of the article. Thank you for your kind consideration and attention. Sincerely, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President •••

“Texas Czech” — the version of the Czech language that many of us Texans of Czech ancestry grew up hearing and speaking — represents a blend of 19th century Moravian dialects, literary Czech and English words modified to resemble something that sounds a little Czech. A recent paper by Lida Cope, a Czech linguist and director of the Texas Czech Legacy Project based at the University of Texas at Austin, focuses on the endangered Texas Czech dialect.

Even as most Texans of Czech ancestry view their “heritage language” as important to their identity, Cope’s research reveals that they are sometimes hesitant to commit personal dedication to the study and teaching of the language. In the United States, a “heritage language” is any language other than English that is spoken by an individual, family or community. According to Ms. Cope, vocal support for language revitalization by the leaders of our well-respected Texas Czech organizations is key to and large-scale language revitalization work. One of the ways that we — as individuals and as representatives of our various organizations — have the opportunity to make a positive impact in preserving the Czech language is by encouraging local school districts to take advantage of online Czech classes that will be offered this fall through Blinn College. Based in Brenham, Texas, Blinn College is making online Czech classes available to high school students across the state through an online program in partnership with Texas school districts.

A Practical Way to Learn the Czech Language “Distance learning classes offer high school students a practical way to learn the Czech language,” says SPJST Lodge 67, Schulenburg member Thadious Polasek, director of the Schulenburg Public Library, who will be the course instructor and leading the live sessions from the Blinn College campus in Schulenburg. Mr. Polasek, who is a fifth-generation Texan of Czech ancestry, received his bachelor’s degree in Czech from the University of Texas at Austin and his master’s degree in Library Science from Southern Mississippi University. His post graduate work with Charles University in

Prague was conducted via distance learning. “It doesn’t matter where in Texas you happen to be,” he says, “If there’s a group of young people who want to learn Czech, we want to deliver that instruction. “These are dual credit classes which will enable the young people to earn high school as well as college credits,” says Mr. Polasek, who received the Texas Exes Outstanding Teacher Award for his performance in the Flatonia Independent School District. There is no required number of students that a class has to have in order to link into the network. As long as the school district is willing to host the distance learning Czech classes, even a group as small as one or two students may join the network. Depending on the size of class, the school district may want to assign a proctor to monitor classroom activities. Just like conventional high school language classes, distance learning classes have deadlines for turning in assignments and doing tests. “When tests are taken, a proctor is required to be present on the site of the receiving class,” says Mr. Polasek, who has been instructing district learning classes in Czech for more than a decade.

Help Spread the Word! High schools administrators that are interested in offering the distance learning Czech classes through Blinn College are encouraged to contact Becky Garlick, Blinn-Schulenburg campus director for more information at bgarlick@blinn.edu or by phone at (979) 743-5222. “We are anxious to work collaboratively with Texas high schools to provide the distance learnBranson Music City Tour Sept. 21 - 26, 2015 8 Shows and More

ing Czech classes,” says Ms. Garlick. Your part in helping to introduce the Czech classes in a high school near you could be as simple as providing a copy of this article to the high school administrators, along with a personal note from you, encouraging them to take the next step and contacting Ms. Garlick about offering the classes in your community.
