Memories of Mother

Celestine Darilek was born in 1921

to a large Czech family and grew up in Fayetteville. The famous Ray Baca Band practiced polkas in her backyard when she was a child. After her parents passed away, she moved to Houston to work in people’s homes as a caretaker for their children. In May 1942, she met Rudy Darilek during a Paul Jones at an SPJST dance in Houston. She told us she had admired this handsome fellow for a while because he performed in the Czech plays held at the lodge. They were married on Thanksgiving Day of that same year. After Daddy came home from World War II, they made their home in West University Place in Houston and raised their large family, having eight children in 10 years! Mother’s idea of her children’s entertainment was berry picking. Sunday escapes from the city focused on feast days and polka celebrations in all the small towns out in the country. She was exceedingly proud of her Czech heritage.

She exhibited her independent spirit when she began sewing for the public in the early 60s because she wanted her own money. She loved all of her sewing ladies and considered them all her special friends. She told Daddy she would never retire from sewing and indeed, altered a pair of pants the week before she passed away. She could make anything out of any piece of fabric, and it always fit perfectly. Additionally, she could make a feast out of the most meager supplies Daddy would bring home from the store. We had amazing kolaches from busted sacks of flour and divine apple pies and banana bread from bruised fruit. Her dill pickles and sauerkraut are legendary. She rarely used a recipe and loved to cook for a crowd. Mother had a special touch at growing everything. She could put a stick in the ground and have a blossom a week later. Her sewing ladies would bring their sick African violets

VĚSTNÍK

appy Mother’s Day to all mothers. There is no greater blessing than a mother’s love. May all mothers enjoy a relaxing and special day this Sunday. Here is a special poem from poet David Knape.

H

MOTHER’S Day No one like a mother, Quite like her no other

It’s why we all love her, all sisters and brothers

A saint look no further, no need to bother

This day let us serve her, our wonderful mother.

~d.knape

Get Well Soon, Philip! We send get well wishes to Districts One/Two/Three Fraternal Field Manager Philip McBee who was recently hospitalized. Brother Philip is doing better and is recovering at home. Birthday Girl My precious Auntie (Evelyn Schiller Henson) of Lodge 24, Cyclone celebrated her 90th birthday on April 30. Auntie has always been my best friend and a very strong, tough, Czech woman! She kept in touch with me throughout my recov-

ery from the auto accident. I’ll never forget her words when she told me shortly after I came home, “I believe you are in worse shape than I am. At least, I can walk a little.” Her phone calls, wit, and inspiration always lift me up. I never knew 90 could be so beautiful, so with it, and so amazing!

Buggy Power Another step in the healing direction was achieved last week. It’s one of those things that I never ever thought about, but always just did it - dreading it every step or roll of the way . . . pushing the buggy (shopping cart) back to the buggy bin. It’s such a small task. But when you can’t do it, it’s a big deal. So being able to return the cart for the first time in almost five months was pretty special! I even took it all the way back to the store. I proudly pushed that cart which was powered by my own two feet. It was a great feeling! —SPJST—

From the Fraternal Department

State FAC Shares May Fraternal Updates

Member Referrals Wanted: Participate in the Monthly Prize Drawing! Your member referrals are appreciated! When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there is no substitute for member referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he or she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest.

Monthly Contests! All referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Walmart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits SPJST by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge.

Qualify for the Drawing at the 2016 Banquet! All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Walmart gift cards to be awarded at the SPJST Awards Banquet in 2016. If you have any questions please contact me for more information at frankh@spjst.com or call me at 254534-0681.

FraternalsGive.org We are entering our fifth month of 2015, and 35 lodges out of 86 are now entering fraternal hours onto the FraternalsGive website. Thank you for your participation and for helping SPJST in recording its fraternal commitment. If you haven’t started using the website, you will find an instructional video that should make it easy for you! The video can be found under Reporting in the menu at the top of the webpage. The video will walk you through and explain each activity type; donation by lodge – no event, member activity and service project/community outreach. If you have any technical questions about using the FraternalsGIVE site, please contact Terry Whipple, Manager, Information Technology, American Fraternal Alliance at 630-522-6322, ext. 125 or email twhipple@fraternalalliance.org. Thanks for making the process part of your routine. Please stay in contact with me if you have any questions at 254534-0681or email frankh@spjst.com.

Join Hands Day Many lodges observed Join Hands Day on May 2. As of present time, 38

lodges have signed up. Wow! Lodges throughout the state completed many excellent projects in which youth and adults joined together to do good in their communities. Thanks again to all lodges who participated in this worthy event. Please make sure you submit your photos to Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny. Join Hands Day is a program of the American Fraternal Alliance, the fraternal industry’s nationwide trade association. It’s a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. SPJST strongly supports this initiative and encourages our lodges and youth clubs to get involved on this special day! Please also remember to share stories of your projects, including and especially, photos on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/fraternalalliance.

Mother’s Day May 10 is a very important day to all of us — and especially our mothers. Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia, created the holiday in 1908 as a day to honor one’s mother. Jarvis wanted to accomplish her mother’s dream of making a celebration for all mothers, although the idea didn’t take off until she enlisted the services of wealthy Philadelphia merchant John Wanamaker. She kept promoting the holiday until President Woodrow Wilson made it an official national holiday in 1914. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in spring. The United States celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May, as does the Czech Republic. Mother’s Day started in former Czechoslovakia in 1923. The promoter of this celebration was Alice Masaryková. After World War II, communists replaced Mother’s Day with International Woman’s Day, celebrated on March 8. The former Czechoslovakia celebrated Woman’s Day until the Velvet Revolution in 1989. After the split of the country in 1993, the Czech Republic started celebrating Mother’s Day again the second Sunday in May. Please remember your mother, mother-in-law and mothers-to-be this month by honoring them at your May

meeting. Their nurturing is instrumental in who we become in life. We must let them know how much they mean to us.

National Polka Festival We invite all members to the National Polka Festival in Ennis, Texas, to come help celebrate 48 wonderful years of Czech heritage festivities Friday, May 22 through Sunday, May 24. Held annually on Memorial Day Weekend, the National Polka Festival offers an abundance of activities to be enjoyed by the entire family in a small city atmosphere. SPJST is a proud sponsor of the event. The festival kicks off with an opening dance Friday at 7 p.m., featuring polka music and the King and Queen Dance Contest, where participants and non-participants are encouraged to wear traditional Czech kroj. The opening dance is a fun event you don’t want to miss! At 10 a.m. on Saturday, floats, bands, and colorful costumes will kick-off the downtown festivities. The parade includes something for visitors of all ages. Enjoy the music of polka bands and our very own SPJST Royalty Court riding on our SPJST Float or the sounds of the award-winning Ennis High School Marching Band. The Shriners make their annual appearance, as well as celebrities, public officials, motorcycles, horseback riders, clowns, kids, and seniors! This giant parade twists through historic downtown Ennis and is sure to please. At 1 p.m. you will find the SPJST kolache eating contest under the main downtown tent. Men, women, boys, and girls can join in the fun to see who can finish eating their kolache first. Prizes will be awarded to the first place winner of each category. You will experience traditions, religious customs, dancing, tastes, sights, sounds, and “a little bit of the Czech Lands” throughout historic downtown and at three spacious, air conditioned halls and 14 sensational live polka bands including Grammy-award winning Brave Combo.

Memorial Day—Monday, May 25 Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is celebrated every year on the final Monday of May. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military

VĚSTNÍK

service. To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed in 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans to voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to “Taps.”

End of Summer Getaway It is not too early to start planning for the Corpus Christi Getaway! This event gets bigger and better each year. Last year, approximately 340 men, women, boys, and girls from across the state came out to enjoy the weekend fraternal celebration. Once again, August 7, 8, and 9 will be the 2015 event. It will commence with the Aloha Party on Friday night. In addition to the Friday golf tournament, plans are now being made to also host a deep-sea fishing outing for those wanting to get a jump on the weekend fun. Saturday’s events will once again include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42 dominos, bunco, and an evening party. This year, the Saturday night festivities will take on a Mardi Gras theme! Additional details will be printed in the Vestnik as they become available. We are here to help if you need assistance. Please feel free to contact me at 254-534-0681 or email frankh@spjst.com. You can also contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez by telephone - 800727-7578 or 254-773-1575 or email tammym@spjst.com. Your District FAC is also available to assist you. They are:

They are also getting ready for District Three Camp and continuing with their community service project which is a sock drive for Captain Hope’s Kids. He reported that arrangements are in the works with the plumber to address and repair. He also stated that he is having the air conditioning units looked at to make sure they are ready for summer. Memories of Mother

Continued from Page 1.

for her to babysit and bring back to life. She picked cotton as a child and had fun growing it until her last days. We have six bolls right now that need to be picked! Music was an important part of her life. We had polkas at 8:30 a.m. every morning on KFRD radio and then beautiful music all day. She wanted polkas at her funeral because she wanted everyone to be happy she was in heaven. Her favorite pastimes included going to polka dances with Daddy, enjoying the family farm at Bauersville, attending the grandchildren’s baptisms and weddings, watching the Astros with anyone who dropped by, and traveling to Coushatta. She worked all her life, early morning till late at night. Even when the day’s work was done, you could find her shelling pecans or crocheting while watching a baseball

or football game. Mother had diverse talents—she had the strength and know-how to hitch a team of mules and the gentleness to soothe a baby’s cry. She had a large heart and generous spirit. Our Daddy adored her since the day they met and on February 10, just one week before she passed away, he turned to her and said, “Will you be my Valentine?” She is an inspiration to everyone who has been blessed to know her. Celestine Veselka Darilek passed away at age 93 on February 17, 2015. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston and served many years as a convention delegate. The above eulogy was written by Celestine’s daughters and read at her rosary at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Houston. A funeral mass was celebrated on February 21 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moulton, Texas. —SPJST—

SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm hosts Apache Group

SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm Work Days 2001 Waldeck Road • Ledbetter, Texas

Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17 9 a.m. til ? • Come and go. Your help is needed to complete several tasks, repairs, and painting at Cooper Farm to get ready for the summer camping season. All supplies will be furnished; all you need to do is plan on wearing old clothes and loaning a little elbow grease! Meals and water will be provided for volunteers. Ice chests with sodas are welcome. If you are available for the entire weekend, cabins will be open to stay the night (please bring your own sheets, blankets, pillows, towel for the shower, and toiletries). If you are not able to donate your time, please consider making a monetary donation towards the project. To volunteer, please contact SPJST State Youth Director Lynette Talasek 800-727-7578 • lynettet@spjst.com To donate, mail your check made payable to SPJST ENC to: State Youth Director Lynette Talasek PO Box 100 • Temple, Texas 76503

The Apache group stayed at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on Saturday night, April 18, 2015, during the La Grange stayover night of their ride from Houston to Austin for the BP MS 150 Bike Ride. The BP MS 150 is a two-day fundraising bike ride organized by the National MS Society South Central Region. The BP MS 150 is the largest of the 100 Bike MS events in the United States with 13,000 cyclists and 3,500 volunteers with countless spectators along the route and at the finish line in Austin. The mission of the National MS Society is to create a world free of MS. In order for each of these riders to be able to ride in this event, they must raise a minimum of $400 that goes to the MS Society. This year had a big twist to it since due to the recent rains and the condition of the fairgrounds in La Grange, the event organizers and officials canceled the first day ride of the MS 150. This was a huge shock to many of the riders who had worked hard to raise their donations. Since team Apache had made arrangements with me prior to the event and would not be staying at the fairgrounds in La Grange, over half of the team did ride the route unsupported by the MS 150 organization due to them canceling the first day of riding, made it to our location in great time. The other half of the Apache group drove up to Cooper Farm and joined with their team on Saturday evening where they enjoyed for the first time ever SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm-cooked sirloin steak and chicken breast meal in preparation for the Sunday ride into Austin. On Saturday night, we received another two and one-half inches of rain which only helped our group sleep better in the cabins. The picture shows the group rested at 6 a.m. and ready to load the bus to head to the starting line in La Grange for their final leg of the BP MS 150 Bike Ride. A big thanks to the Apache Team for everything they do to help National MS Society and their great spirit. State Youth Director shares May updates

Dear SPJST Youth Leaders, May is here and that means school will soon be out and many of our young people will be graduating from high school. Graduating seniors, remember the values your parents, grandparents, and the SPJST Youth Program have instilled in you and know that they help to define the person you are today. Believe in yourself and have the courage and conviction to stand up for what is right. Strive to do your best. Congratulations! I wish you much success with everything you do in life. I have been to several district spring meetings and Easter egg hunts in the last month. Everyone has been so nice, and I have enjoyed every minute of my travels. Many of our youth have taken the time to create a Christmas card and participate in the Christmas Card Decorating Contest. It has been very exciting to me to see the entries and the creativity of each youth that has participated.

Online Camp Forms Campers and Chaperones: To register for 2015 SPJST camp, log on to www.spjst.org. Czech Film Festival set for May 15-20 in Texas

Czech filmmakers have long been recognized for their innovative contributions to international cinema. The legacy of the Czech New Wave, the period of stylistic experimentation and social critique that accompanied political and social reforms in mid-1960s Czechoslovakia, still resonates in a new generation of voices offering skilled takes on diverse genres from comedy to gritty realist drama, from stylish period thrillers to animation, and more. A selection of three influential and emerging voices in Czech cinema will be presented with the nationally touring program “Czech That Film” on the weekend of May 15 to 17 at 14 Pews in Houston, located at 800 Aurora Street in Houston, Texas, and May 18 to 20 at Angelika Film Center in Dallas, located at 5321 East Mockingbird Lane, No. 230 in Dallas, Texas. Czech actress Eva Jenickova will attend opening nights in both Houston and Dallas for the narrative feature Clownwise, in which she plays the role of Marketa. There is a palpable nostalgia around Jenickova for most Czechs of a certain age who fondly remember her role in the 1983 teenage comedy Snowdrops and Aces (Snezenky a machr). Jenickova marks her return to Czech film after having lived in the United States since 1991 and worked as an actress and dancer in Los Angeles. And she is quite close to

Czech Ambassador Gandalovic told those at the West reception of the strong bond between the City of West and the Czech Republic. He talked about the Czech Republic’s financial assistance for the rebuilding of the Sokol West facilities and said the group was excited to see construction on the building underway. Czech Minister of Agriculture Jurecka said, through an interpreter, that “Texas is a great state and we have met many good people here.” While in Texas, the Czech delegation met with HEB officials and he said they would be “an interesting partner” and said he hoped his country “would be able to work with them in the future.” He added that it is his belief that the

Czech Republic can also be a profitable market for United States investors because of its central location in Europe. In conclusion, he talked about the importance of agriculture in the world as the population continues to grow and its needs to be fed. State Ag Commissioner Miller addressed the group at the luncheon and gave some quick facts on agriculture in Texas. He reported it is the second largest economy in the state and that one in seven jobs in Texas are ag-related. Ag Commissioner Miller also said Texas is the largest beef producer in the U.S. and that it produced enough beef to make 18 billion hamburgers. There were several gift exchanges during the reception which included giving the Czech Minister of Agriculture Jurecka a West Volunteer Fire Department sweatshirt, which he promptly put on and wore for the remainder of the luncheon. During their week in the United States, the delegation also visited Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Arkansas. In D.C., Minister Jurecka met — among others — USDA Deputy Secretary Alexis Taylor, to discuss the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and common agricultural policy. Also, he met with Pat Roberts, the chairman of the Agriculture Committee of the U.S. Senate and the USTR (Office of the United States Trade Rep-

Customs duties, red tape and restrictions on investment on each side of the Atlantic can make it difficult to buy and sell goods and services on the other. Eliminating barriers to trade between the EU and the US could potentially create jobs and widen choice and lower prices for consumers. In Virginia, the Minster and delegation met with Todd Haymore, Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry of Virginia. They also paid a visit to the Hardywook Park Craft Brewer and the Keenbell farm. In Arkansas, on Thursday, the Minister spoke with Wess Wark, Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture and met Arkansas University representatives. The Czech delegation also discussed food industry issues with representatives from Walmart. In Texas, in addition to meeting with HEB officials, they also visited in Waco. The Czech Ag Minister and delegation met with Texas AgriLife and Extension Service Director Doug Steele as well as with representatives of Farm Bureau and City of Waco officials. —SPJST—

Texas high schools invited to participate

Blinn College to offer dual-credit Czech classes via distance learning

Dear SPJST Members, Greetings from the SPJST Home Office! I am writing to share information about an exciting language program that you may wish to communicate to high schools in your area. Blinn College is making online Czech classes available to high school students across the state through an online program in partnership with Texas school districts. I recently had the opportunity to visit with the organizers and as a result of that visit, prepared a summary article outlining the basis of the program and how it could enhance the learning opportunities of young people in your area who may have an interest in studying the Czech language. Please review the attached article and share it with the curriculum coordinator or other key high school officials in your area. If you have questions or need additional information, please know that I have included Branson Music City Tour Sept. 21 - 26, 2015 8 Shows and More

“Texas Czech” — the version of the Czech language that many of us Texans of Czech ancestry grew up hearing and speaking — represents a blend of 19th century Moravian dialects, literary Czech and English words modified to resemble something that sounds a little Czech. A recent paper by Lida Cope, a Czech linguist and director of the Texas Czech Legacy Project based at the University of Texas at Austin, focuses on the endangered Texas Czech dialect. Even as most Texans of Czech ancestry view their “heritage language” as important to their identity, Cope’s research reveals that they are sometimes hesitant to commit personal dedication to the study and teaching of the language. In the United States, a “heritage language” is any language other than English that is spoken by an individual, family or community. According to Ms. Cope, vocal sup-

port for language revitalization by the leaders of our well-respected Texas Czech organizations is key to and large-scale language revitalization work. One of the ways that we — as individuals and as representatives of our various organizations — have the opportunity to make a positive impact in preserving the Czech language is by encouraging local school districts to take advantage of online Czech classes that will be offered this fall through Blinn College. Based in Brenham, Texas, Blinn College is making online Czech classes available to high school students across the state through an online program in partnership with Texas school districts.

A Practical Way to Learn the Czech Language “Distance learning classes offer high school students a practical way to learn the Czech language,” says SPJST Lodge 67, Schulenburg member Thadious Polasek, director of the Schulenburg Public Library, who will be the course instructor and leading the live sessions from the Blinn College cam-

pus in Schulenburg. Mr. Polasek, who is a fifth-generation Texan of Czech ancestry, received his bachelor’s degree in Czech from the University of Texas at Austin and his master’s degree in Library Science from Southern Mississippi University. His post graduate work with Charles University in Prague was conducted via distance learning. “It doesn’t matter where in Texas you happen to be,” he says, “If there’s a group of young people who want to learn Czech, we want to deliver that instruction. “These are dual credit classes which will enable the young people to earn

high school as well as college credits,” says Mr. Polasek, who received the Texas Exes Outstanding Teacher Award for his performance in the Flatonia Independent School District. There is no required number of students that a class has to have in order to link into the network. As long as the school district is willing to host the distance learning Czech classes, even a group as small as one or two students may join the network. Depending on the size of class, the school district may want to assign a proctor to monitor classroom activities. Just like conventional high school language classes, distance learning classes have deadlines for turning in assignments and doing tests. “When tests are taken, a proctor is required to be present on the site of the receiving class,” says Mr. Polasek, who has been instructing district learning classes in Czech for more than a decade.

College are encouraged to contact Becky Garlick, Blinn-Schulenburg campus director for more information at bgarlick@blinn.edu or by phone at (979) 743-5222. “We are anxious to work collaboratively with Texas high schools to provide the distance learning Czech classes,” says Ms. Garlick. Your part in helping to introduce the Czech classes in a high school near you could be as simple as providing a copy of this article to the high school administrators, along with a personal note from you, encouraging them to take the next step and contacting Ms. Garlick about offering the classes in your community. Individuals seeking to help facilitate the funding of the distance learning Czech instruction being offered through Blinn College may direct their tax-deductible donations to Blinn College and to the attention of Director Becky Garlick; Blinn College - Schulenburg Campus; 100 Ranger Drive; Schulenburg, Texas 78956 with the acknowledgement “Schulenburg Campus Czech Studies.” —SPJST—
