young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer’s showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box. Curious, and somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man’s name embossed in gold. Angry, he shouted at his father and said, “with all your money, you give me a Bible?” and stormed out of the house. Many years passed and the young man had become very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father now was getting old, and thought perhaps he should go see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. When he arrived at his father’s house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father’s important papers and saw the still gift-wrapped Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. His father had carefully under-

lined a verse, Matt.7:11, “And if ye, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Heavenly Father which is in Heaven, give to those who ask Him?” As he read those words, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer’s name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had wanted. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words PAID IN FULL.

SPJST Joins Texas Fraternals in Hosting Fraternal Awareness Day at Texas State Capitol
Dear Members, April 14, 2015 — Fraternal Awareness Day on the south lawn of the Texas State Capitol in Austin, Texas. What a glorious day it was! And only the day before we were concerned that forecasts for a torrential downpour might put a damper on things. By the end of the day, members of the Fraternal Alliance of Texas (FAOT) served almost 1,500 hot dogs, chips and bottled water to legislators, staff members and others who work in the Texas State Capitol Complex. Founded in 1900, the Fraternal Alliance of Texas unites 1,840 local fraternal benefit society chapters representing approximately 643,700 members throughout the state of Texas. Teamwork makes it happen! My special thanks to SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak, for his efforts in helping to coordinate SPJST’s end of the affair. Also, special thanks to FAOT Secretary Colleen and Chester Jenke for their part in getting
supplies together and to Doug Wessels of Modern Woodman for providing the pits. Thanks, too, to the many SPJST Home Office personnel, SPJST directors, and SPJST lodge members who helped out with the event. Why did we do it? Number One: We did it for the attention. To increase the visibility of our respective fraternal benefit societies, the financial services that we provide and the great — even compassionate — deeds, educational opportunities, cultural and social activities that are so routinely extended through our lodges, chapters and councils. Number Two: We did it as an up close and personal way to say “Thank you” to our statewide elected officials, their support teams and other public servants for the important work that they do on our behalf. And — if there’s one thing that we’ve learned in all our collective years of fraternal experience, it is this: Eating together helps us to
connect. Eating together provides us with an opportunity to extend gratitude. And, last but not least: Eating together is fun! We had a great time on the south lawn of the Texas State Capitol that day. The musical backdrop for the event was provided courtesy of Leroy Muehlstein, past Grand Lodge President of the Sons of Hermann and the Markman Polkateers. Getting to know and partnering with our elected officials at the local, state and national level represents a key element in the Fraternal Alliance of Texas strategy to increase the visibility of our fraternal business model. When you live it and breathe it; when it’s your livelihood, it can be all too easy to take for granted how important our fraternal efforts are to the betterment of our communities. So, in a very real way, Fraternal Awareness Day is a great way to remind ourselves of the important obligation that we have to fill as motivated leaders within our respective organizations.
Lodge leaders are encouraged to invite local, county and state officials to the noteworthy events hosted by their local lodges. It's an easy and effective way to keep the policy makers and enforcers informed of the good works that your lodge contributes to the local community. In conjunction with this year's event, District 55 State Representative Molly White of Temple, introduced House Resolution No. 1955, acknowledging the outstanding efforts of fraternal organizations in Texas. The text of that resolution reads as follows: As in years past, this year’s Fraternal Awareness Day also served as our statewide kick-off event for the 2015 Join Hands Day observance which was held on Saturday, May 2. Lodge 97, Placedo reports on March meeting
SPJST Lodge 97, Placedo members met March 13, 2015. Music was provided by Gay Revel. She brought her CD of “The Texas Polka Music Museum, Bands of Texas, Vol. 4.” It was a very good CD. It added a great relaxing feeling for the meal portion of our meeting. The meal consisted of fish sandwiches from the Dairy Treat just down the road from Lodge 32, Victoria on Laurent. A green salad, cole slaw, and a cake finished off the meal. Everything was very good.
Old Business Diana Redd read the minutes from the December meeting. The minutes were accepted with corrections. Dennis Vanek gave the financial report. The lodge received a 2014 incentive check from the Home office.
New Business Gay Revel and Diana Redd attended the officers workshop on January 16. Gay reported to the lodge what was discussed. An audit committee was organized. The 2014 audit will be completed at the June 2015 meeting. Karen Kaspar noted that for a lodge that meets quarterly, the lodge does participate in several extra activities. Gay displayed the plaques that the lodge received at the awards banquet in February. Diana Redd took the plaque until the lodge could have a place to display it. Marvin Tomas asked about buying a flag for Warrior Weekend. Donna Vanek said that the lodge had bought a flag for Mr. Garrett. The lodge will help Hospice of South Texas again this year for Join Hands Day. This will be on May 2 at 9 a.m. Diana Redd will put this in the Vestnik. The Corpus Christi Getaway is in August. Lodge 133 San Antonio reports on April meeting
March was a busy month for the members of Lodge 133, San Antonio. On the third Sunday of March, members celebrated the anniversary of its chapter’s founding. We were happy to have Glen Pruski participate in the celebration as District Seven Director Bob Bayer’s representative. He addressed the members and informed them of upcoming events particularly the domino tournaments. Members enjoyed a barbecue chicken dinner complemented by a selection of delicious cream pies for dessert. After lunch, a short meeting followed. Vice President Vicki Reese announced the lodge received its incentive check, which was presented at the SPJST Awards Banquet. In addi-
tion to the premium refunds, the lodge received additional money from incentives for gaining new members. Brother Glen Pruski addressed the members. He reminded them about the District Seven Spring Meeting on Sunday, March 30 and the upcoming 42 domino tournament. Edward and Rhonda Mazac celebrated 25 years of marriage. A gift card was sent to them. Attendance prizes were won by Agnes Rohan, Jarolyn Popp, and Eric Trinidad. Agnes Rohan was also the winner of split-the-pot. Jarolyn Popp intended to attend the District Seven meeting. However, she found out earlier that week that her son Robert Popp and his wife Audra would be delivering their baby that day. Jarolyn and her husband Robert are the proud grandparents of Nicholas Emil Popp. He received the middle name Emil in honor of his great-grandfather Emil Matula, who was an ardent member of SPJST before his death in December, 2013. In trees I see the life of me, whose growth began from simple seed
Soon branching out in rows of leaves, then rising high as limbs can reach
The tree matures strong as can be, till it reaches peak maturity
As years go by drops its green leaves, eventually its life recedes

left in my pocket it was forgotten till it tumbled out in shreds a part of me forever gone erased in the notepad

Dear Vestnik Readers, The District Two Spring Meeting, held at Lodge 29, Taylor on Sunday, March 15, 2015, was a fun-filled day for our youth. It was great to see so many in attendance. We began with the practicing of beseda with several new dancers. These youth are unbelievable. By the time the practice was over, they were performing as pros. I am so proud of you. Thanks to all who came to the practice and those who helped out. We have the best instructors around—Alexis Festa, Nichole Festa, Jerry Pechal, and their helper Thomas who rounds everyone up for practice. What an exciting registration from 1 to 2 p.m. There were cakes galore being registered by youth and adults. Youth also participated in the Christmas Card Design Contest. State Youth Director Lynette Talasek made certain almost everyone joined in on a design. There were some really cute ones. The meeting began at 2 p.m. with District Two Flag Bearers Kyndall Carroll and Trent Wuensche, filling in for Brandon Girod, presenting the flags and leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The meeting was a regular business meeting. I along with my Assistant DYCs, Cristy Girod and Amber Bartek, would like to thank the members of District Two for giving us the opportunity to be reelected as District Youth Counselors. It gives us such joy to work together for our wonderful youth. We are so blessed to have such great kids.

Thank you for sharing the most important part of your family with us. Youth members Trent Wuensche of Lodge 48, Beyersville and Journie Gaines of Lodge 20, Granger will serve as the 2015-2016 District Two Flag Bearers. District Two leaders and youth appreciate all the donations given by so many at this meeting. On March 8, Lodge 182, Falls County Youth Leader Becky Beckendorf, husband Jason, and their three young daughters Bailee, Paetyn, and Tynlee lost their home and belongings to an electrical fire. Our prayers continue to be with this family. The District Two Youth Club once again had a silent auction. This year, all monies raised went to the Beckendorf family. Thank you to those of you who were supportive with donating and purchasing items. Donating items were: From Lodge 18, Elgin—Johnnie and Irene Vrabel From Lodge 24, Cyclone—Brian and Joan Vanicek

What Is Svacina? Svacina. It’s pronounced “svah-chee-nah” and it’s a Czech tradition that goes back hundreds of years. The earliest reference that we could find was a 14th century text that defined the word as a meeting off ffrriends or acquaintances. That hasn’t changed. d To this day, svacina is still about getting together with the peopl o e you know and love.

Encyclopedia of Bohemian and Czech-American Biography
Past SVU President Míla Rechcigl, for years, has been diligently working on a long-term, to date the most ambitious SVU project yet, preparing a comprehensive and up-to-date Czech American Biography. It is a tremendous and unparalleled undertaking which, when finished, will comprise several thousand biographies of notable American personalities with
Czech roots, starting from the time the first Czech put his foot on American soil to date. The planned encyclopedic VADE MECUM, reflecting enduring contributions of our countrymen to the development of the United States, Canada, and Latin America will be not only an invaluable tool for all researchers and students of Czech-American history, but also a carte blanche for the Americas, as well as for the Czech Republic, which considers CzechAmericans as their own and as a part of its magnificent cultural history. In contrast to the traditional Who’s Whos that are quite impersonal, telegraphic in style, terse, full of abbreviations which make them hard to read, and frankly unpalatable, if not boring, Míla Rechcigl has chosen an encyclopedic style with a flowing narrative to make biographies more interesting and pleasure to read. For easier use, instead of alphabetical arrangement, he is organizing this monumental endeavor into specific sections of various facets and areas of human endeavor, covering business, religion, government and politics, law, music, dramatic art, visual art, creative writing, publishing, media, education, activism and reform, the humanities, social sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences and mathematics, engineering, medicine, military, exploration, espionage, sports, modeling, and recreation. The publication will, of course, have an alphabetical index as well. Inasmuch as the manuscript is rapidly approaching its completion, to assure its completeness, Dr. Rechcigl would welcome additional suggestions of significant individuals for possible inclusion in any one of the areas mentioned above. This is the last chance for the deserving SVU members and other noted personalities with the Czech roots to be included! There are no fiscal obligations. H.E. Be sure to include the person’s place and year of birth, as well as death (if applicable). Short biographies would be welcome. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
