Victoria — Warrior Strong and Warrior Proud Another day we should be mindful all year long – Memorial Day. This is the day we stop and think about what this really means. We are honoring our men and women who served our country proudly – and lost their life defending the greatest country in the world – America – the country we call home. They died so we could live. The least we could do is say a prayer of gratitude – remembering their sacrifice. So this weekend is much more than having cook-outs and officially getting the summer started. Of course, we should do those things and enjoy our family – but remember what the day is truly for.

Warrior’s Weekend

Flags Three Thousand Strong

Warriors Nine Hundred Fifty Strong

This is the ninth year the Victoria area has celebrated Warrior’s Weekend – always the weekend before Memorial Day. Ron Kocian, president of Warrior’s Weekend, has been in charge from the beginning. He and his wife Sherry have recruited family, friends, churches, organizations – volunteers from all over. It takes all year to plan. It was just over Sunday, and the first fundraiser for next year is in two weeks. I think everyone agrees the time and hard work is all worth it when you see the Warriors enjoy their weekend! Each year gets bigger and bigger – people just want to get involved when they read about it and see pictures in the paper. The Victoria area has the

largest weekend of its kind – this is what this year was like. Tuesday, May 12 – the Field of Honor was home to the dedication of Warrior’s Weekend. Three thousand flags were flying – the Toast of the Coast Chorus provided Barber Shop music, and we’re proud Lodge 32, Victoria member Al Haisler has participated with the group for several years. Ron Kocian introduced people – about 200 were in attendance. “Taps” followed at 9 p.m. The flags are all sponsored by individuals, organizations—SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria has been a proud sponsor of a flag for a few years— and churches. This is a fundraiser going towards making the weekend possible. Seven years ago, there were 500 flags –

it grows every year – with 3,000 this year. It took 300 volunteers hours and hours to set up the flags and have them ready for all to appreciate. The plan was to have the Warriors visit the Field of Honor – hoping to find their flag. Every Warrior has a flag

with his or her name on the card. Other flags can be in memory of a friend or relative or in honor of someone. The Warriors are very moved to see the flags and even more so when they actually see their name on the card. Well, Mother Nature had other plans this year – it rained – rained and rained some more! But that didn’t stop all of them from coming – and there were people from all over waving flags and saluting as the convoy passed through small towns on the way to Victoria and eventually to Port O’Connor. The Warrior’s traveled from near and far – going through Victoria to the popular fishing town of Port O’Connor. Port O’Connor has been host to Warrior’s Weekend since the beginning year, 2007. The town goes all out making everyone welcome. They even have sand sculptures created by professional and volunteer sculptors – 200 tons of sand were sculpted into patriotic sculptures. This is what the Warriors were welcomed with, and it is very impressive – will move you to tears.

he first several months of this year were spent in District Two and only in District Two. I attended a few events and thoroughly enjoyed visiting with my District Two family. Then one day, we ventured outside of District Two — all the way to District One in Smithville, Texas, to see members of Lodge 38, Kovar where we were greeted so warmly. Special thanks to Lodge 38 Reporter Dorothy Jean Lastovica (pictured above) for all of her care and concern. Things continue to improve since the car accident. It’s been five months. I just completed the not-sofun physical therapy, and I am working at the Home Office again every day. My next goal is to go one week without any doctor appointments. Then I’ll work towards two weeks, three weeks, etc. without doctor visits. I’m so ready not to see doctors and medical facilities! Here’s a sweet poem from poet David Knape that makes me smile!

Mother’s Day at Flag Hall Mother’s Day for as long as I can remember has always been celebrated at Flag Hall for Lodge 24, Cyclone’s annual barbecue lunch. It’s a tradition for me . . . and many, many others. This year’s lunch was another delicious, enjoyable gathering with hundreds of people who came from far and wide. Thanks to the members of Lodge 24 for all of their hard work and dedication to continue this annual event. So many people look forward to it each year. Great job, Lodge 24! —SPJST—

Dear SPJST, I was honored to be the recipient of the Ben and Martha Trcalek Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. I will use the money I received to support my college education. Your generous support of the youth in SPJST is greatly appreciated. Without donors like you, it would be impossible for some students to pay for a college education. My future plan includes attending Blinn College while working a fulltime job at Evers and Sons, Inc. I will then transfer to Sam Houston State University to obtain a degree in business. I am excited about my future plans and look forward to becoming a successful business person. Once again, thank you for sponsoring this scholarship. It was an honor to be a recipient, and I am forever grateful. Sincerely, Trey Groce Lodge 17, New Tabor —SPJST—

I am proud to have been a part of this project: drums, percussion, vocals, songwriter, and co-producer. I know . . . I know . . . it isn’t a Grammy, but it’s kind of the closest thing us “Polka People” have left since the Grammys eliminated our category a few years back. The awards were:

Lodge 15 Buckholts welcomes visitors

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts meeting was called to order by President Doug Williams at 5 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by guest David Nauert followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present for our meeting. We had such a great meeting. We

had 18 in attendance - 10 members and eight visitors. We were overjoyed to have such a nice attendance. It was more than we have had in months. We were so glad to have District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda with us. They brought food and door prizes. We always enjoy their visits so much. The big surprise of the day was when Věstník Editor Melanie Zavodny and her husband came walking in the door. We were so delighted to have them. We are so good to see Melanie walking once again. She spoke and expressed how pretty the new roof is. She thanked everyone for all their get well cards and prayers during her recovery. She complimented us for all working together so hard to accomplish our goal in replacing our leaky roof. If we had not gotten it replaced, our pretty historical building would have deteriorated quickly. A leaky roof can do a lot of damage in a short time. President Williams stated that different ones had inquired about the financing. With gifts from our faithful members and friends, it is completely paid for. We are one of the oldest SPJST lodges. We are so thankful we have been able to keep it going all these years. We must give a lot of the credit to our deceased members who did so much for this lodge. We saved some of the original cedar shingles that were used on the roof when it was originally built back in 1956. We are considering painting and decorating them for souvenirs. President Williams asked Director Pospisil if he would like to speak and tell us how things are going. He said our sales of insurance certificates were down this past year, but everything is going good. He was happy to announce that 64 scholarships were awarded this year, which is great. Our tile man John Smith attended

the meeting. He has completed the tile in the kitchen and bar area. It looks real nice. The old original wood floor is in real bad shape which makes it difficult to install the tile. We are getting a heavier weight and better grade tile this time than before. John said at times he heated the tile to make it more pliable. A large, beautiful wall mirror was given to the lodge by Marguerite Burtis Vogel and sister Mary Irene. It is now hanging on the women’s restroom wall. It really looks nice. We are very proud of it. The electric stove they gave us is also very nice. We ap-

preciate both items so very much. Another big surprise - Michael Allison brought steaks and grilled them for all 18 of us. They were delicious. It was certainly nice and generous of him to do that. The Pospisils brought pinto beans, cornbread, salad, and some delicious apple dumplings for dessert. That was a meal fit for a king! Lodge 18, Elgin shares activities

School is almost done for this school year. Lodge 18, Elgin would like to extend an invitation to all to come to have a day of fun and companionship. It’s been way too long since we have had a day where we invited all SPJST members and anyone who wants to learn more about SPJST to come share their wishes with us. Remember the days when this lodge started? Well, I don’t. We were living in Austin and were not members of SPJST, but I remember the days when we would go to the dances. If you didn’t have a reservation, you might not get a table to sit at. Those were the days. This hall was filled, and I have seen the album where the lodge had

the “Womanless Wedding,” Mayfest, and all the other activities. Why are we not having any of these? I know: Everyone is too busy. Well, we were busy; we had full time jobs, children in school and involved with church and lodge activities. What has changed? I really don’t know. But way too many families are not spending any time together. Our rule was family dinner together at the table and no television. I know things have changed; I’m not so sure that for the better. I have nieces and nephews who do not acknowledge older family members. That is wrong; I have repeatedly told my grandchildren always speak to anyone they know. If nothing else, a hello. A little means a lot to the elderly. So much for the soap box speech. We had a great time at the Red

Ravens dance - what a great crowd! Remember the group I told you about with the ladies from Poland? Well, they, were back - what a fun group. They were celebrating Alexandra Blinkova’s (from Austin) birthday. We are so happy that you chose Elgin SPJST to celebrate. It was great to see so many youngsters in your group. We hope that means you will be coming for many years. At the April meeting, we celebrated with Alice Kovar. She received her 50-

year pin. Congratulations, Alice. We hope we can celebrate you receiving your 75-year pin. We need to see more SPJST members who helped start this great lodge. We are losing them one after another. Come let us tell you thank you for this wonderful lodge. Today, I will seek out an opportunity to repay rudeness with a kind gesture. Irene Vrabel, Reporter —SPJST—

that may be rekindling old friendships. Goodness knows, many of us have wonderful memories of times past at Lodge 18, Elgin and the Stardust Ballroom. We want to rekindle that old spirit — and build on them! There will be something for everyone — young and old! Your lodge is a very community-oriented organization. That’s a story that doesn’t get told often enough. The lodge routinely provides the use of its facilities at little or no charge to benefit worthy causes and other organizations in Elgin and the surrounding community. Consider Sunday, May 31 as our way to re-introduce you to all that the lodge has to offer. There will be food. There will be music. There will be games and prizes . . . and there will be magic! Our special guest presenter for the afternoon will be Magician Rodney Rash. In addition to Rodney’s perform-

ance, there will be fun and games for all ages — door prizes, too! And remember to bring your appetite as we’ll have refreshments, including hot dogs and drinks. And please leave your cash at home. This is your party! Activities get started at 3 p.m. We’ll keep the celebration going as long as it takes. After all, the hall belongs to all of us and it’s about time we had a party! And, in case you’re wondering, “yes” you may extend this invitation to your friends and neighbors. The more the merrier! Looking forward to seeing you on May 31. Lodge 47, Seaton to recognize beseda dancers at June 7 picnic

Dear Members, As most of you recall, beseda has been a very active part of Star Hall for many, many years. At the front entrance of the lodge, on the right, which we call the “picture room,” there are several picture of dancers from years ago. It is a wonderful remembrance of many fine folks who had a wonderful time in dancing the beseda. Our current District Two Youth Beseda Dancers will perform around 3:30 p.m. To each and every beseda dancer who has performed, we would like to recognize you during our performance. No matter what year or how long ago you danced, we want you to be a part of

this celebration. Wear your costume or bring it to be displayed. You deserve the recognition for the part you have displayed in Czech heritage. Dancers throughout the state—we invite you also. It will be most helpful in organizing, if you would email or call me if you plan to attend. I would like to also have the date in which you danced and if you have names of other members of your group this would also be very helpful. SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville participated in Join Hands Day with a bottled water drive for Floresville Volunteer Fire Department and EMS that was very successful. On Saturday, May 2, 2015, SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville—with the help of Girl Scouts, Livestrong, Floresville VFD, and Wilson County EMS— spearheaded a bottled water drive at

the HEB and Walmart parking lots. We would like to thank HEB and Walmart. We collected 167 cases of water and $697.65 in cash to buy more water later. We would like to thank Walmart for its donation of 25 cases of water. This was a very successful drive, and we thank all people who donated to this cause. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

We would also like to thank the four other groups that helped, namely Girl Scouts and their parents, Livestrong, Floresville VFD, and Williamson County EMS. Thank you so much. The fire department had a truck at each location, and EMS had an ambulance at HEB. You could get a free blood pressure check, too.

The Girl Scouts did a tremendous job at the front doors at each location. SPJST Lodge 107 normally meets on the second Sunday of each month at 3 p.m. at the SPJST Hall on FM 1303, but the May meeting will be on the third Sunday, May 17. Fraternally, Lian Pruski, Reporter —SPJST—

Warrior’s Weekend

Continued from Page 1.

The Road to Port O’Connor Began Friday 13 buses and 2 vans from Houston 4 buses from San Antonio 2 buses from Fort Hood 250 Warriors arrived in personal vehicles 6,000 to 8,000 were expected to attend the event in Port O’Connor

A fishing tournament just doesn’t happen easily. All participants were Warriors – wounded active military veterans. So many have never fished, most have not been to the Gulf Coast, many thought they couldn’t physically get in the boat and fish. All were amazed at what they could do with so many volunteers making sure it could happen. Football teams from local schools lifted and carried them to boats. There were 425 boats in the water – everyone had a chance to fish

– and even catch! After a day of fishing, a barbecue meal was served in a 14,000 square foot, air conditioned tent with 350 tables. Locals and volunteers were able to mingle, eat, and visit with the veterans. The meal was just one of many fundraisers making Warrior’s Weekend possible – everything was done with no expense paid by the veterans. A true gift. Hotels from Port O’Connor, Port Lavaca, Seadrift, and Victoria hosted

the Warriors for Friday and Saturday nights. Academy Sports and Outdoors provided shirts for the veterans. A group of volunteers from Devereux made 4,500 chicken and shrimp stuffed jalapenos. Hats off to the hundreds of volunteers who made this weekend very special to some very special Warriors. Thousands of hours went into putting this on – from coordinating the veterans and their transportation, housing, making patriotic bows, setting up the

flags for the Field of Honor, coordinating the boats, you name it – so much was done – things people don’t see and haven’t even thought of. Volunteers were of all ages – from the very young – to the not-so-young – what a feeling to make such a difference. Our hearts and their hearts will never be the same. Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover it – but the look on the faces of those wounded veterans – that says it all. —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club

Fort Worth Friendship Club met on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at St. Thomas Dining Room for its monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Margaret Sears who welcomed everyone. The theme being “Mother’s Day Tea” with decorations of flowers on all the tables. Thanks to Rose Ann and Lola for the decorations. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. same place as the last two years. Hope all of you members can come. Marie Keller, assistant to the sunshine person, reported on sending sympathy cards to the families of Mary Ann Kozel and Darlene Tompkins. Darlene thanked all for their calls, prayers, and cards she received on the death of her son. I reported on my visit with Merel Kovar at the assisted living home, death of member Rose Cuba in Wichita Falls, and on Lydia Alholm’s 95th birthday celebration which was covered in her last Vestnik article. I further reported on a telephone visit with Camille Bolcer who had a small heart attack two weeks ago, but is home now, wears a monitor, and is doing well, she said. Anna Johnson was also missed. She said she has problems walking down the ramp at her house. All present signed cards for—thinking of you to Anna Johnson as she has not been to a meeting all year, a get well card for Camille Bolcer, and a sympathy card to Georgia Hall, Rose Cuba’s sister in Wichita Falls. Ella Geer and Ann Connor are being missed. We hope all is well!

We had lots of door prizes, but I only got names of donors being Lorraine Cross and Paula Arsenault bringing four gifts. Winners of the 50-50 dollar games were Marie Keller and Lorraine Cross. We had lots of happy winners. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to our May celebrants— Paula Arsenault, Anna Johnson, Pat Russell, and Agnes Saldana. May you all have many more birthdays. On May 29, Anna Johnson will celebrate her 95th birthday. Let’s all send her a birthday card, as she is always sending us one. Since we had a little extra time before lunch, we played a game. There were eight questions on a page with answers being the name of a candy. Betty Krenek was the winner as she guessed seven of the candies. Now these are candies we see and have bought many times, but as we all know, sometimes our minds just go blank. The prize was the candy of each of the eight answers. Hostesses for May — Mary Schneider, Lola Taylor, and Libbie Vrla — were thanked. They did a great job.

Hostesses for June will be Marie Keller, Lupe Esparza, and Libbie Vrla with the theme being “Dad’s Best Friend - Dogs.” Following the meeting, grace was said, and a great luncheon of fried chicken was enjoyed plus all the other wonderful side dishes. The next meeting will be on June 3. Don’t forget, Father Jerry will be our guest speaker.

Kyle Morales teaches at Cedar Hill and coaches football. (You may have seen him on television during football season.) He was selected as “Teacher of the Year.” Ben Kosarek had been teaching at a high school outside of Austin; he has been asked to start a new program at his old high school—Midway-Hewitt—in aerospace engineering.
