VĚSTNÍK

Congratulations to Lodge 88, Houston! Lodge members celebrated

50 years on Beall Street with a homecoming party on Sunday, June 7. Photos from the celebration appear on pages 8 and 9. And, congratulations to Lodge 47, Seaton for hosting a fantastic picnic also on June 7. I was honored to attend and enjoy the day with so many people. Thanks, lodge volunteers, for your hard work. A special part of the afternoon was recognizing past beseda dancers. Hats off to District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky for her efforts to appreciate these individuals who have participated in beseda circles throughout the years. Current District Two Beseda Dancers then performed for the crowd. Way to go, youth!

Coming Soon: YADs Youth club members are preparing for District Youth Achievement Days that will be held in a few weeks. If you are available, please attend your district’s YAD to support these young people.

Topics for this CE class include: • History of ULs • What is TAMRA? • How does it work? • What does it mean by target? • Option A or B - Which is best? • How do you know if one is under-

funded? • Loans vs surrender - How to tell? • Who fits the profile? • What is the difference between a VUL, an IUL, and a classic UL?

The class will be held at SPJST Lodge 81, Needville, located at 13609 Highway 36 in Needville, Texas. A catered lunch will be provided. If you wish to attend the class, please RSVP by sending an email to delisled@spjst.com or call Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty at 832232-2049 by June 30 so the organizer will have a head count to plan for the meal. —SPJST—

Happy Anniversary, Albert and Jan!

Happy Birthday, Lodge 48, Beyersville Gemini!

Gemini – The Twins. Flexibility, balance, and adaptability are the key words to describe these Gemini folks. They are quick to grasp the meaning of any situation, often with positive effects. They can sometimes be tough to predict; they do tend to run hot and cold, but they are very affectionate, charismatic, and make a very supportive friend! Happy birthday to these Lodge 48, Beyersville members, left to right, Kacie Vanecek on May 22, Albert Filla on June 5, and Kayla Wuensche on June 20. —Submitted by Paula Kennedy

Albert and Jan Filla celebrated their anniversary on June 11. We can’t say what year, but a few years earlier on June 11, 1509, King Henry VIII of England married Catherine of Aragon, the first of six wives he had in his lifetime. When Catherine failed to produce a male heir, Henry divorced her against the will of the Roman Catholic Church, thus precipitating the Protestant Reformation in England. And, just in case you are worried, Jan did produce a male heir to King Albert I. In fact, they have two beautiful kiddos, William and Emily. Albert and Jan are very active at Lodge 48, Beyersville. Their hard work, and revolutionary ideas make a huge difference. —Submitted by Paula Kennedy

and it often is not easy. The employees of the Attorney General’s Child Support Division (CSD) extend well wishes and thanks to Texas dads for giving their children the love and support they deserve. Last year, the CSD collected $3.8 billion in child support - and most of the money came from fathers. You are the unsung heroes in your children’s lives. The CSD demonstrates its commitment to fathers by recognizing the important and irreplaceable role they play in their children’s lives. Several notable resources that serve Texas fathers include: The Paternity Opportunity Program (POP) gives unmarried fathers the opportunity to acknowledge their children’s paternity at the time of birth. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) trains and certifies hospital and birthing center employees to assist parents with the Acknowledgment of Paternity process so that the child will have a legal father right from the start. Last year, POP gave more than 130,000 Texas children a good start in life by helping their fathers establish

legal paternity. Maps for New Dads: Handbook for Expectant and New Fathers is a publication designed to help expecting dads transition into fatherhood. Maps covers everything from what to expect on a prenatal visit to making homes “baby safe”—all in a manner designed to reinforce the special role fathers play. Additional resources developed by the OAG include a Parenting Twogether Handbook for New Parents and the For Our Children DVD. Access and Visitation programs promote noncustodial parents’ access to and visitation with their children, when appropriate, through a variety of shared parenting projects. Awarding grant funding to local organizations is one way the Attorney General’s Office can help children whose parents are engaged in custody or visitation disputes, since federal funding to run the child support program cannot be used to handle these issues. The services provided under this grant include early intervention, co-parenting education, mediation and enforcement. The OAG also funds a toll-free assistance hotline, (866) 292-4636, and provides a

The Parenting and Paternity Awareness (p.a.p.a.) program is an innovative educational curriculum designed for secondary school students and young adults. The p.a.p.a. program focuses on the “rights, responsibilities and realities of parenting.” Key themes in the curriculum focus on the importance of father involvement, the value of paternity establishment, the legal realities of child support, the financial and emotional challenges of single parenting, the benefits of both parents being involved in a child’s life, healthy relationship skills and relationship violence prevention. Happy Father’s Day, Dad

By Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton

On June 21, children across Texas will celebrate their fathers and thank them for a job well done. It is on this special day that dads receive the praise and thanks they deserve year round for the countless sacrifices they make for their children. Some sacrifices are larger than others, but all are a common part of fatherhood. It is because of these sacrifices that a father holds a special place in his child’s heart. A father’s job is an important one,

20. Prunes were medicinal.

2. Curry was a surname.

21. Surprisingly, muesli was readily available. It was called cattle feed.

3. A take-away was a mathematical problem.

22. Pineapples came in chunks in a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of a real one.

4. Pizza? Sounds like a leaning tower somewhere. 6. All chips were plain.

7. Rice was a milk pudding, and never, ever, part of our dinner.

8. A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining. 9. Brown bread was something only poor people ate.

10. Oil was for lubricating; fat was for cooking.

11. Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and was never green in color, unless something was very wrong with it.

18. ‘Kebab’ was not even a word, never mind a food.

19. Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as being white gold.

1. Pasta had not been invented. It was macaroni or spaghetti.

5. Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time.

17. Seaweed was not a recognized food.

Happy birthday to Michael Hosch of Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy! He celebrated his special day on June 6, 2015, and was recognized at the lodge meeting.

12. Cubed sugar was regarded as posh.

13. Chickens didn’t have fingers in those days. 14. None of us had ever heard of yogurt.

15. Healthy food consisted of anything edible. 16. Cooking outside was called camping.

Hey, Guys! This summer has started off great! We’ve had Vacation Bible School at our church, and it was really fun helping out. Czech Kids’ Fun Day set for June 27 in Caldwell

Are you interested in passing along your Czech heritage to your children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren? Texas State Genealogical Society (TCGS) is interested in doing the same and is sponsoring its first Czech Kids’ Fun Day in conjunction with its adult event “Growing Your Genealogy.” Both programs will be held at the Caldwell Civic/Visitors Center on Saturday, June 27, 2015 beginning at 9 a.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The children’s event ends at 3 p.m. while the adult event concludes at 4 p.m. Mary A. O’Brien will conduct the Czech Kids’ Fun Day for children ages kindergarten to age eight years. Seat-

ing is limited and may not be available the day of the event, so early registration is encouraged. If paid and postmarked after June 10, children’s registration is $25, which includes a pizza lunch and snacks. Mary’s husband, Eugene O’Brien, will be presenting at the adult “Growing Your Genealogy” event, speaking on “Writing and Publishing Your Family History Book.” While children are enjoying their activities, adults will participate in “Growing Your Genealogy,” with five sessions in addition to Mr. O’Brien’s: Ronnie Horcica—“Modern Radio: Broadcasting Texas Czech Music to the World,” Doug Kubicek—“Krajina: A Texas Czech Utopia on the Goldenrod Prairie,” Helmuth Schneider— “The Stable Cadastral Map System of the Czech Republic,” James Harkins—“German Resources of the Texas General Land Office Archives and Records,” and Luba Ruzicka— “Luba’s Travels.” In additional to the speakers, the usual event activities will be available: research library, silent auction (bene-

In Memoriam

In Memory of John James Weidig

John James “Jimmie” Weidig, a longtime Deer Park resident, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at the age of 87. Born in Paragould, Arkansas, on May 5, 1928, to parents Joseph and Gladys Weidig, the family moved to Deer Park when Jimmie was only two years old, and he watched the area grow as he grew. Jimmie was president of his 1947 Jimmie Weidig Deer Park High School graduating class and co-captain of the football team. After school, Jimmie served in Korea as staff sergeant in the United States Army, then returned to Deer Park and was employed by Diamond Alkali (later acquired by BF Goodrich), never missing a single day of work for 42 years of employment. Jimmie was an avid outdoorsman, Little League coach and the master of ceremonies for numerous family

weekends at his cabin near Buffalo, Texas. After retirement, Jimmie served on the board of the Associated Credit Union of Texas and was a proud member of the American Legion and SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena where he and Irene Hogan, his longtime companion of 38 years, danced the nights away with treasured friends. He was preceded in death by brothers Robert Weidig of Mica, Washington, and Donald Wayne Weidig of Highlands, Texas. Jimmie is survived by brother Franklin Weidig and wife Ann of Uvalde; children Julianne Brackin and husband Bill of Austin, John Weidig and wife Lynne of The Woodlands, and Casey Weidig and wife Penne of Bellaire; 11 grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren (with two more on the way); as well as numerous extended family members and a host of friends. A true patriarch of the Weidig family and an involved member of his community, Jimmie will live on in the hearts and minds of so many. Service at Grand View Funeral Home in Pasadena included a visitation on Friday, June 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. and funeral on Saturday, June 6 at 12:30 p.m. —SPJST—

June 27 . . . a Czech program almost too good to be true: one for adults, one for children

Are you interested in music, history, geography, or writing—with special emphasis on Czech heritage? Would you like to share these interests with other Texas Czechs? Do you have a desire to pass on the Czech heritage to future generations? If so, then you should consider attending the Saturday, June 27 events—“Growing Your Genealogy” and “Czech Kids’ Fun Day.” Caldwell Convention/Visitor Center will be the home for both events, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and programs starting at 9 a.m. The adult program ends at 4 p.m., and the children’s program ends at 3 p.m. Although sponsored by Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS), these programs are not focused only on genealogy. When searching family history, people want to know where their ancestors lived, what their life was like in the “old country” and the “new country,” and how some family traditions may have started. Program presentations will touch on these topics. Those interested in Czech music will enjoy “Modern Radio: Broadcasting Texas Czech Music to the World,” presented by Ronnie Horcica, creator and producer of the radio program, “Czech Polka Time.” History buffs can pursue their passion by listening to “Krajina: A Texas Czech Utopia on the Goldenrod Prairie,” by history teacher and author Doug Kubicek and “Luba’s Travels” with Luba Ruzicka, a Slovak-American who immigrated in 1968 and now lives in Texas, who will tell her personal immigration story and discuss the customs and traditions celebrated in her beloved Fatherland. For those interested in Czech geography, Helmuth Schneider will share

how we can locate and read the Cadastral Maps of our ancestral villages in the Czech Republic and how additional information can be gained by using the Protocoll Documents in his presentation, “The Stable Cadastral Map System of the Czech Republic.” Most Czech immigrants were attracted to Texas by the promise of land ownership. Key family information from land records can be gained from the numerous records of the Texas General Land Office. James Harkins, Director of Public Services for the Texas Land Office Archives and Records Program, will address this topic in his presentation, “German Resources of the Texas General Land Office Archives and Records.” So you want to be a writer or publisher? Have dreams of publishing your family history, but lack the “know how?” Eugene O’Brien, author and publisher of several family history books, will offer tips on selfpublishing in his program “Writing and Publishing Your Family History Book.” Do you remember hearing all those stories about being Czech from your parents, grandparents, or maybe even great-grandparents? And, of course, we want to pass on our Czech heritage, right? What better way to do so for children ages kindergarten to eight years than by having them participate in our “Czech Kids’ Fun Day,” where they will be introduced to the Czech language, dance, dress, food, music, and personal history. Mary O’Brien will coordinate this special program just as she has presented it to local West, Texas, students. Seating is limited and may not be available the day of the event, so early registration is encouraged. Interested in authentic Czech gift items or books relating to the Czech heritage? Our sales table will offer you many options. Interested in doing some research? Our mobile library will be available. Like to get some good deals?
