This Week’s Funny A member drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he
floored it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little gray hair he had left. “Amazing,” he thought as he flew down I-35, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a state trooper behind him, lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, “What am I doing? I’m too old for this,” and pulled over to await the trooper’s arrival. Pulling in behind him, the trooper walked up to the Corvette, looked at his watch, and said, “Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a reason for speeding that I’ve never heard before, I’ll let you go.” The old gentleman paused. Then he said, “Years ago, my wife ran off with a state trooper. I thought you were bringing her back.” “Have a good day, sir,” replied the trooper. —Author Unknown —SPJST—

Member offers thanks
Dear SPJST, I would like to thank you for your interest in helping me pursue my academic career and further my knowledge. This scholarship will greatly help me pay for the many costs of college and allow me to follow my dreams. I would also like to thank you for having allowed me to be a youth club member for all these years. I have greatly enjoyed all of the activities, be it beseda or Youth Achievement Day. I will remember those moments for a lifetime. Once again, thank you for everything and méj hezky den. Sincerely, Jeremy Ree Lodge 17, New Tabor —SPJST—
Member conveys appreciation
Dear Brian Vanicek, I am writing to express my most sincere gratitude to you for making the SPJST Scholarship possible. I was very grateful to have been selected as a recipient of your scholarship. Your financial assistance will help me as I pursue my dental career. I recently graduated from La Grange High School class of 2015. While in high school, I always tried to stay very involved. My senior year consisted of FFA poultry projects and shows, Leopardette Drill Team Captain, Cosmetology President, and keeping an A honor roll. While participating in all of these activities, I still obtained a job at H-E-B. However, I know the obligations ahead of me are much more strenuous than high school. In the fall of 2015, I plan to attend Blinn College. After receiving my associate’s degree, I plan to enroll in the dental hygiene program provided by Blinn College in Bryan, Texas. If possible, I would like to continue my education in order to become a dentist. With the help of your generous donation, that dream no longer seems impossible. As I continue to take small steps to reach my ultimate goal, I will always remember what others, as yourself, have provided me to make my goals a reality. Your financial assistance will allow me to focus more of my time on studying and less on worrying how I will pay
the numerous bills. Thank you once again for providing me with this scholarship as I embark on a new journey in life. I hope one day I will be able to help young adults achieve their dreams just as you are helping me achieve mine. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Katelyn Divin Lodge 51, Ellinger —SPJST—
Working with a purpose
Dear SPJST, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the generous scholarship you have given me. I feel so fortunate to have been selected as a recipient of this honor. Your generosity will allow me to pursue my dreams, and for that, I cannot thank you enough. I will pursue my bachelor’s degree in pre-engineering at Austin College and will continue my education at Texas A&M to receive my master’s degree. The financial assistance you provided will be of great help to me in paying my educational expenses, and it will allow me to concentrate more of my time for studying. Thank you once again for your generosity. I promise I will work hard to prove myself worthy of this opportunity you’ve given me. I am looking forward to the day I am able to help other students just as you have helped me. With sincere thanks, Dalton Butler Lodge 66, Waco —SPJST—

SPJST Lodge 178, Longview. (Jeremy’s obituary and photo appears on page 18 of this week’s Vestnik.) Many have expressed an interest to donate to such a fund in Jeremy’s memory that will help future journalism students who want to cover such sporting events; and we, as his family, appreciate your willingness to help us to honor his life. So we are happy that we are now able to announce to you the establishment of “The Jeremy Cotham Sports Journalism Memorial Scholarship Fund.” In order to endow this scholarship fund, the college has told us that it will take a minimum of $15,000. So that is our initial goal to work towards. Any amount that you can, or that you would like to give, in order to help us to meet this goal to honor the life and memory of our son Jeremy Cotham will be greatly appreciated.
Checks may be made payable to Kilgore College Foundation, earmark the check “The Jeremy Cotham Sports Journalism Memorial Scholarship Fund” and mail to: Kilgore College Foundation Attn: Leah Gorman Director of Development c/o Kilgore College 1100 Broadway Boulevard Kilgore, Texas 75662-3204
Any and all donations are fully tax deductible, and we, as his family, want to thank you ahead of time for your help in honoring our son whose life was taken from us way too soon. May God bless you all. Submitted by, David Cotham Lodge 178, Longview —SPJST—

Sales Agents Encouraged to Attend Universal Life Class
SPJST will hold an eight-hour Universal Life continuing education class on Saturday, July 18, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Universal Life products can be very complex. A Universal Life certificate can be the best product or the worst product depending on the situation. ULs can be hard to understand and hard to explain. Topics for this CE class include: • History of ULs • What is TAMRA? • How does it work? • What does it mean by target? • Option A or B - Which is best? • How do you know if one is under-
funded? • Loans vs surrender - How to tell? • Who fits the profile? • What is the difference between a VUL, an IUL, and a classic UL?
The class will be held at SPJST Lodge 81, Needville, located at 13609 Highway 36 in Needville, Texas. A catered lunch will be provided. If you wish to attend the class, please RSVP by sending an email to delisled@spjst.com or call Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty at 832232-2049 by June 30 so the organizer will have a head count to plan for the meal. —SPJST—

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Dorothy Tomascik followed by a moment of silence for our departed members. All officers were present except our treasurer. Vice President A.W. We saw many who have been absent for several years, namely Earnest Fuchs, III, Ed Lehman, the Zajicek brothers, Benjamin, Woodrow and Frankie and Jimmy Raney. Berniece Fischer Zajicek gave us a report on Mrs. Lillie Zajicek. We send our best wishes out to all who made the trip this year. Vice President A.W. All YAD cards are to be turned in on Friday, June 19 at the District Two Swim Party. She stated there were so many activities planned for the summer and encouraged all youth to attend. President Pechal stated the outside building needed to be cleaned, and he asked members to help with this project on Saturday, June13 at 8 a.m. He asked for the wishes of the members of having a 2016 lodge picnic. A motion was made and seconded with the motion carrying. Mark your calendars for Lodge 47’s annual picnic on Sunday, June 5, 2016. There was discussion on different ways to have other lodge members help when activities are held. A picnic committee was chosen. This committee will meet and delegate duties to other members. If you are willing to chair a particular part of the picnic or any other activity, please contact a lodge officer. We would love to see more people interested with new ideas. David Pechal stated he has been working on Star Hall’s Facebook page and was pleased with the “likes” regarding the picnic. He is challenging 1,000 “likes” before the barbecue cookoff on July 18. If this goal is met, he will have a bucket, (or did he say a barrel?) of ice cold water poured on him. Will his challenge be met? Chris Zavodny stated things are going well with Lodge 47’s web page. We thank you, Chris, for a job well done and for your continued support on the website. How great to have a graduated youth member continue to attend lodge meetings and be such a help to our lodge. Lodge 88, Houston celebrates 50 years at current location
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 50 years since Lodge Pokrok, No. 88, Houston built a new lodge at 1435 Beall Street. If only the walls could talk . . . Oh, the stories they could tell of all the history that has gone through its doors. On Sunday June 7, 2015, Lodge 88 opened its doors to celebrate 50 years at the current location - 1435 Beall. The actual opening day occurred in February 1965, but the celebration because of the wet weather this year was moved to June - our Homecoming Day. The day started with a dinner of barbecue brisket and sausage with all the trimmings. Birthday Club Sisters provided homemade pastries and kolaches to complete the meal. The Lodge 88 Czech Orchestra and the Choral Group provided Czech music for the lunch hour, and it was enjoyed by all. The day’s activities consisted of a display in the Blue Room of the Vestnik highlighting the opening of Lodge 88’s new facilities. Lodge 200 Bruceville-Eddy supports Taylor Hall fundraiser
SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy meets at Taylor Hall, a building in Bruceville-Eddy, Texas. Taylor Hall is also used by the senior citizens for activities and serving meals each day to the seniors of the community. During the recent rains and winds, the roof was damaged and caused leaks which ruined the ceiling in several places. A barbecue plate fundraiser was planned to help fund the repairs. The event was held Saturday, June 13. Several members of Lodge 200 along with others from the community cooked brisket and sausage for the meal. Nearly $12,000 was raised for building repairs - including a $200 donation from Lodge 200. Now, that is true fraternalism at work! Fraternally, Gene McBride Fraternal Activities Coordinator —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club
The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at St. Thomas Dining Room for the monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Margaret Sears who welcomed everyone. Our guest was Dee Shaw, and we enjoyed having her. She joined the Club. Our theme was “Dad’s Best Friend - Dogs,” and each table had dog decorations, edible dog biscuits on napkins with dog footprints, which were very clever. Thanks, Rose Ann and Lola, for always doing such a great job in decorating. Since we were having a speaker, the reading of the minutes from the previous meeting were dispensed with, and Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report which was accepted as presented. July is our dining-out social. We will meet at Golden Corral, 3517 Alta Mere Drive, at 11:30 a.m. Following the luncheon, those who want to can go back to the church for games. Be sure to wear something red, white, or blue to keep with the July 4 holiday. Sunshine Person Darlene Thompkins will send a thinking of you card to Betty Landsfeld as she recently had a procedure on her back. We hope you are feeling much better by now. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to June celebrants of Felma Smith and Lorraine Cross. Mike Voorhies, Lake Worth Fire Marshall, will be our guest speaker in September, and his topic will be “How to Detect How Fires Start.” Mark your calendar so you don’t forget to attend.

Door prizes were brought by Paula Arsenault (two), Helen Skrasek, and Debbie Skrasek. Thanks, ladies. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Libbie Vrla and Debbie Skrasek. We had lots of happy winners. Father Jerome Ward, Chaplain, Lieutenant Colonel, USAF (Retired) was our guest speaker. He was most entertaining. He gave a prayer card to everyone titled “The Racer’s Prayer” (with God, you’re always a winner). First, he read a letter he had written to his deceased mother for Mother’s Day. He said he always writes her a letter each year and thanks her for all the support she had given over the years. He wrote of a few surprises to her such as when he came home one day and told her he had joined the military, or that he wanted to become a priest, or when he started racing cars. It was a very special letter. He then spoke of their dog called Whitey when they lived on a farm in upstate New York. Father Jerome then excused himself for a few minutes and returned wearing a car racing suit. He talked about racing cars for over 30 years every Saturday, and sometimes on Sunday. He showed us his St. Christopher’s medal, racing shoes, fire socks, and lightweight gloves. He said he retired from racing in 2000, but now flies small planes. He has restored a 1939 Chevy. He certainly is a priest of many talents. This was a most entertaining talk with lots of questions at the end. Father Jerome, we enjoyed having you, and hope you come again soon. He is a brother to our member Mary Agnes Ward. Rose Ann reminded me that I failed to report last month in my newsletter on the corsages she made for each table which were given away as door prizes.
They were lovely, and all the mothers enjoyed receiving them. Sorry about this, Rose Ann. Hostesses for the day were Lupe Esparza, Marie Keller, and Libbie Vrla who did a great job, and many thanks. Following the meeting, grace was said, and a great fried chicken luncheon was enjoyed with all the special side dishes. No plate is large enough to have a sample of everything so decisions have to be made. The next meeting will be Wednesday, July 1, and we will meet at Golden Corral at 11:30 a.m. for lunch. Don’t forget to wear something patriotic. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

I’m so proud of all the Leaders-InTraining (LITs) making it through camp! But, I would like to send a shout out to the District Five LITs. They accomplished multiple leadership building activities. In Memoriam
In Memory of Walter Zahn
Walter John Zahn shared 80 wonderful years with his family and community from January 3, 1935, to May 25, 2015. Walter was born to Walter John Zahn, Sr. and Cecilia Waters Zahn in Jersey City, New Jersey. He will be heavily missed by his family: wife Ann Zahn; daughter Barbara Walker; son-inlaw Mark Walker; Walter Zahn and granddaughter Tara Walker. He proudly served our grateful nation in the Air Force, Air Force Reserves, and Civil Air Patrol and was a train enthusiast. Yes, an enthusiast for all railways around the nation, compassionately informing the community how important railroads have been and still are to our society. His passion for trains began when he was a teenager diligently working with several companies: Bright Star Industries, House of Oz, Armor and Co (U.S. Steel), and Hall’s Hobby House. Walter was a dedicated participant in the local North Texas Council of Railroad Clubs model railroading tours, to which he welcomed the public into his home to view his “Farmer’s Grain and Terminal Shortline Railway” model. Due to his passion, Walter also received numerous awards of recognition from various railroad organizations and was a participant in many others. Memberships and awards included the LoneStar Region Life Member Association, Lackawanna Railroad Society, National Model Railroad Golden Spike Award, and Nevada Northern Railway Museum, to name a few. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas. Walter Zahn loved his teddy bears as a treasure from childhood, but he also was a loving father, husband, father-in-law, grandfather, and friend. Services were held for Walter at Grove Hill Funeral Home on Friday, May 29. Please visit www.GroveHill.com. —SPJST—

In Memory of Jeremy Cotham
Jeremy David Cotham’s six-year-long battle with cancer ended Thursday, March 12, 2015, at Good Shepherd Hospital. Jeremy was born 28 years earlier August 18, 1986 - at the very same hospital. He attended Longview schools Doris McQueen, Bramlette, Judson Middle School; and he then graduated from Longview High School in 2004. From then, he attended Kilgore Junior College Jeremy Cotham where he worked on The Flare school newspaper. He majored in sport journalism under Betty Craddock, and that subject would become the love of his life! After Kilgore, he then went on to college from there to the University of Texas at Tyler where he graduated in 2009. Jeremy played sports all of his life. It started with coach’s pitch where his first coach was Robert Floyd then to kid’s pitch and then to all levels of Dixie League (LBBA) baseball. He would brag that he played on the same team with Chris Davis who now plays for the Baltimore Orioles. Jeremy was also on the church basketball team at Alpine Church of Christ where he had his church membership, and where he was very active in the youth program; his youth minister was Ricky Pruitt. Jeremy also liked golf and bowling, plus attending sporting events like Lobo High School, Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks, and Texas Longhorn games in Austin. After college graduation, Jeremy was able to cover sporting events in press boxes then he got to go on a special trip to cover U.T. Tyler’s women’s softball team at the National Championship in

New York State where he got to go sightseeing in New York City. Then about a month later, Jeremy was a groomsman in the wedding of his sister Amber in June 2009, in which he was the highlight of the photo session that day! Little did he know that just two months later, his life would take a very dramatic turn. After feeling tired and unable to play his usual sporting events, and after several tests, it was determined that Jeremy had leukemia, and the very next day was off to M.D. Anderson in Houston. Initially, Jeremy was put into “remission” early on, and he thought that he had beaten it. But eight months later, he relapsed; and Jeremy was told that he needed a stem cell transplant. We know that he was blessed by God that the Lord provided Jeremy’s sister as his perfect donor. But about 70 to 80 days after the stem cell transplant, Jeremy relapsed again, which set him on the spiral of rounds of chemo, radiation treatments, graft versus host disease, bouts of pneumonia, infections, surgeries, and scleroderma symptoms. Hard decisions had to be made to try to save his life like the amputation of his lower legs (last November), to the putting in of a trach/vent, to an emergency care flight to Houston, and to the putting in of a feeding tube most recently. Jeremy was moved back home to Longview early in 2015 where he was able to be around those closest to him family, friends, and church members. He was taken from us way too soon, but he fought a brave and courageous battle, never complaining about his bad lot that life had handed him. Visitation was held 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 15 at Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore. Memorial service was held Monday, March 16 at Alpine Church of Christ. Those who attended the funeral were asked to wear sports jerseys of Jeremy’s favorite teams - Longview Lobos, Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks, or the Dallas Cowboys. Jeremy is survived by parents David and Sharon Cotham; sister and brotherin-law Amber and Austin Whitehead; grandparents (on his mother’s side) Norman and Joy Williams; several aunts and uncles Joyce and Scott Busbee, Brenda Williams, Kay and Charles Mickey, and Beverly and Wayne King; and numerous cousins. Jeremy was preceded in death by his grandparents (on his father’s side) Preston and Loveda Cotham. Memorials may be made to “The Jeremy Cotham Sports Journalism Memorial Scholarship Fund.” Checks may be made payable to Kilgore College Foundation, earmark the check “The Jeremy Cotham Sports Journalism Memorial Scholarship Fund” and mail to Kilgore College Foundation, Attn: Leah Gorman, Director of Development, c/o Kilgore College, 1100 Broadway, Kilgore, Texas 75662. —SPJST—
