VĚSTNÍK
It’s great to visit our members. David and I enjoyed a fantastic weekend on June 27 and 28 with adult
and youth members in Districts Four and Five. It was my first back-to-back distance travel weekend in a long time, and I survived! District Four Youth Achievement Day was held at Lodge 49, Rowena on Saturday. The hall was decorated beautifully, and the food was delicious. The youth crafts and presentations were wonderful. Thank you, District Four, for a fantastic day! On Sunday morning, we headed to Lodge 88, Houston for District Five YAD. It was great to finally be back in District Five. We were in District Five the day before the accident so to see these members again felt really good. I feel like I am finally coming full circle! The talents and crafts were outstanding, and it was a very special day—especially hearing State/District Five Queen Denae’s very touching closing remarks. Thank you, District Five!
Corpus Christi Get Away Are you ready for the Corpus Christi Get Away? It’s coming up quickly on August 7 to 9. State FAC Frank Horak reports that as of July 1, only five hotel rooms with king beds and 10 rooms with double beds are still available for August 6 to 9. If you are planning to participate in this funfilled weekend, please call and reserve your room today. Call 361-883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJ.” See last week’s Vestnik for details about the weekend activities, including the golf tournament and bay fishing expedition. Frank says that spots are still available for seven fishermen/women for the Friday, August 7 fishing trip. Give him a call at 254534-0681 for more details and/or to register. Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member Larry Elzner is coordinating the golf tournament on Friday, August 7. To register or for more details, call Larry at 361-687-7125. —SPJST—

SPJST to Host Sales Agent Universal Life Classes in July
SPJST will conduct eight-hour Universal Life continuing education classes on Saturday, July 18 in Needville and Friday, July 24 in Temple. Universal Life products can be very complex. A Universal Life certificate can be the best product or the worst product depending on the situation. ULs can be hard to understand and hard to explain. Topics for this CE class include: • History of ULs • What is TAMRA? • How does it work? • What does it mean by target? • Option A or B - Which is best? • How do you know if one is underfunded? • Loans vs surrender - How to tell? • Who fits the profile? • What is the difference between a VUL, an IUL, and a classic UL?
Saturday, July 18 Lodge 81, Needville The July 18 class will be held at SPJST Lodge 81, Needville, located at 13609 Highway 36 in Needville, Texas. A catered lunch will be provided. Please RSVP by sending an email to delisled@spjst.com or calling Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty at 832-232-2049 by June 30 so a head count for the meal can be planned.
Friday, July 24 SPJST Home Office in Temple The July 24 class will be held at SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. A catered lunch will be provided. Please RSVP by sending an email to delisled@spjst.com or calling Delisle Doherty at 832-232-2049 by July 10. —SPJST—

From the Supreme Lodge Vice President
5 Reasons to Buy Life Insurance Before Age 30
Frequently, the least reached age group for life insurance products is those under the age of 30. However, there are some significant benefits for this group that can come with life insurance coverage.
American students borrowed private loans in the 2011 to 2012 school year, according to the most recent data compiled by The Institute for College Access and Success. If there is a cosigner on the loan, the co-signers will likely have to pick up the burden in the event of death. Combined with grief, that’s a painfully heavy load to shoulder.
Submitted by Supreme Lodge Vice President Clifton Coufal
1. Easier to qualify for coverage A great reason to buy life insurance before a person is age 30 is to lock in coverage while they are relatively healthy. The cost of insurance rises as a person develops health conditions. While a young person may believe they will never develop any health conditions, the odds are against them. For example, while just 11 percent of men and 7 percent of women ages 20 to 34 have high blood pressure, 37 percent of men and 35 percent of women ages 45 to 54 have the condition. Among 55- to 64-year-olds, 54 percent of men and 53 percent of women have high blood pressure according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
2. Cheaper life insurance rates Life insurance rates increase as you age because your life expectancy is shorter with each passing birthday. A 29-year-old female nonsmoker preferred plus could pay as little as $245 a year for a $500,000 20-year term policy with a 10-year guarantee. But the lowest quote for a 40-year-old with the same characteristics and the same amount of coverage is $425 a year. 3. Paying off student loans Although government student loans are generally forgiven upon the borrower’s death, private student loans generally are not. Some 1.4 million
4. Taking care of their spouse With marriage generally comes financial interdependence. Most young (and older) families have significant monthly expenses including a mortgage, car loans, student loans, and credit card bills. What would happen if the primary breadwinner passes away? Would the surviving spouse be able to care for their family needs and expenses as effectively? By having a policy that names the spouse as beneficiary, it will give them the financial means to carry on.
5. Taking care of their children Generally, parents should have life insurance to provide for their children in case of the unthinkable. A life insurance policy would ensure a child doesn’t need to worry as much about their future. A policy could provide for their housing, education and other needs. Regardless of your age, consider this question in deciding whether you need life insurance or need additional coverage: Would someone suffer financially if I died? If the answer is yes, you should have a conversation with an SPJST Sales Agent who can advise you about the best ways to meet your needs. —SPJST—

2014 - 2015 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
Third Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2014 to May 2015 youth year. This is total merit points for the 20142015 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2014 to May 2015 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.
What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.
Contest Dates June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015
Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10
What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

When JH was about 16 years old, he went to study at Charles University in Prague. From 1398, he taught at Prague University, then he received a bachelor’s degree and the title of master of liberal arts was lent him in 1396. He was ordained as a priest and began to preach in the Church of St. Michael and then in the Bethlehem Chapel in 1400. Hus was elected Dean of the Artistic Faculty in 1401, and he was Rector of the University from 1409 to 1410. He propagated a larger representation of Czechs in the management of the University. Jan Hus chide the Pope’s Indulgence’s Bull and called the Pope the Antichrist. JH criticized the moral decline of the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church has signified him as a heretic and excommunicated him from the Church (1411). Pope John XXIII proclaimed anathema on Jan Hus in 1412. The Pope ordered that Hus should be captured and judged by the ecclesiastical laws and forbade Hus to serve worships. Hus stayed in surrounding of Kozí Hrádek in 1413. theological faculty in Prague condemned Hus as a heretic. P o p e John XXIII called together the Council to Konstanz at Bodam’s Lake on November 1, 1414. The Council was supposed to end the schism in the Western Church. The Emperor and King Zikmund invited Hus on the Council in Konstanz and gave him the safe-conduct sheet, which guarantee Hus a safe tour through Zikmund’s area. JH assumed that he will be able to freely discuss about his science and faith at the Council of Constance. The Inquiry Commission was appointed in December and JH was imprisoned in the cell of Dominican monastery on an island on Bodam’s Lake. Hus’ fascicles were condemned to be burned by Council June 20, 1415, and Hus’ doctrine was rejected. Hus was by the ecclesiastical tribunal in Konstanz condemned as a heretic. Because he refused to recant his doctrine, he was given to secular power and burnt at firing stake of wood on July 6, 1415. His burning caused the escalation of tensions within the Czech Kingdom, and later led to the Hussite’s war. Hus has been valued as an ancestor of Protestant Reformation by Historians.

Works of Master Jan Hus include: O církvi - De ecclesia, Proti bule papežské - Contra Bulla Papali (i.e. against sale of indulgences), O českém pravopise - De orthographia Bohemica (eliminates digraphs and introduces the diacritics’ signs as first for Slavic language). In 1999, Pope John Paul II expressed his regret over the Jan Hus being burned and acknowledged JH as a reformer of the Church. Burning’s date of JH became a Czech state holiday.
