Fourth of July was really special this year. Maybe because I’m still

here, able to walk, and can almost function like I used to. There are more good days than bad days, and the pain is getting easier . . . most of the time. But life goes on, and smiling always makes things better. Our floats have Frozen and Minions themes this year. Elsa and Anna were designed as mannequins on the Frozen float, but we decided to change things up a bit for the Fourth of July parade in Belton. Communication Assistant Brooke Hoelscher and I donned Anna and Elsa hair and dresses, and what an amazingly wonderful time we had on the SPJST Float waving to thousands of people who were shouting “S-P-J-S-T,” “Anna,” “Elsa,” and “Olaf.” A very big thanks to the District Two members who rode the float — including 2014 District Two King Jacob Horak, Queen Kacie Vanecek, Duke Cody Voigt, and Duchess

Makayla Newsom. These members made the entry very special. The Belton parade was also the last public appearance for the 2014 State Royalty Court. King Nikolas Faust, Queen Denae Bronikowski, and Duchess Cheyenne Parker represented SPJST well as they rode in convertibles through the parade. (Elsa is pictured above with Cheyenne’s little sister Kinsley Parker!)

Pet Parade Special thanks to members who have sent in photos of their pets. We are enjoying these pictures! Please send us a picture of you and your pet (photo must include member and his/her pet) by next Wednesday, July 22. See the back page of this week’s Vestnik for details on how to submit your photo and information. The Vestnik Pet Parade will be published in an upcoming issue. —SPJST—

A.M. Best Revises Issuer Credit Rating Outlook to Positive for SPJST

OLDWICK, N.J., June 23, 2015— A.M. Best has revised the issuer credit rating (ICR) outlook to positive from stable and affirmed the financial strength rating (FSR) of B (Fair) and the ICR of “bb” of SPJST (Temple, Texas). The outlook for the FSR remains stable. The positive outlook reflects increasing risk-adjusted capitalization, a return to positive earnings, improvements in SPJST’s business mix and enhancements to the nascent enterprise risk management (ERM) program. Continued increases in unassigned funds, along with reduced allocations to higher risk assets in the investment portfolio, have led to increases in risk-adjusted capital in recent years. The society has reported generally positive earnings as the life and annuity segments have been profitable, but are offset by large fraternal expenses. SPJST has moderated its annuity production in recent years due to the low interest rate environment, as well as adjusted the policy features, in order to reduce the society’s risk profile and improve the premium mix.

A.M. Best would need to see continued progress in SPJST’s ERM for further positive rating action to occur. Offsetting these positive rating factors are SPJST’s narrow business profile and high concentration risk. SPJST operates solely in the state of Texas, exposing the company to geographic concentration and increased sensitivity to regulatory changes and economic events. The society also has some concentration within the investment portfolio, as demonstrated by several large fixed-income holdings in the financial sector. The majority of the society’s product reserves are related to interest-sensitive fixed annuities with relatively high guaranteed crediting rates and low surrender charge protection, exposing the society to spread compression if interest rates remain low and disintermediation if rates rise rapidly. A.M. Best Company is the world’s oldest and most authoritative insurance rating and information source. For more information, visit www.ambest.com. —SPJST—

SPJST: “Practicing the true meaning of a fraternal organization”

To: Melanie Zavodny (Editor) Just a short note to the editor to thank you for your tribute in the last Vestnik in honor and memory of the life of our son, Jeremy Cotham. Although I have only now been appointed with SPJST for just a few months, you have already been of such a huge support to our family in our loss. Thank you so very much for your contributions in buying the luminaries to honor Jeremy’s battle with cancer (leukemia) in the most recent Upshur County Relay for Life, and thank you for also informing your readers about the scholarship program that we are trying to set up in Jeremy’s memory at his alma mater of Kilgore College. You and your company are practicing the true meaning of a fraternal organization. Thank you for helping us to honor the life and memory of our son who was taken from us way too early in his life by this tragic disease that we call cancer. Thank you very much, David and Sharon Cotham Longview, Texas District Three Lodge 178, Longview Sales Agent —SPJST—

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Raises $400 for Museum, ENC on Join Hands Day

Lodge 4, Hallettsville’s Join Hands Day resulted in SPJST Education and Nature Center and the Czech Heritage Museum each receiving checks for $203. This money was generated from the proceeds of a plant booth at the SPJST Car Show on Saturday, May 2, 2015. Our lodge families worked together in connection with Breslau Ponds and Plants to gather beautiful plants of all types and varieties. We appreciate everyone’s support that day. We have received many reports of planting success from our purchasers. Joining hands for this project was fun, educational, and a great way to raise money while beautifying our homes and helping further the projects of the Education and Nature Center and the Czech Heritage Museum. —Annie Vahalik, Vice President/FAC

Lodge 9, Snook reports on July meeting

The July 1, 2015, SPJST Lodge 9, Snook meeting was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 6:55 p.m. Bonnie Walker led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for Linda Lou Cavender. Minutes from the June meeting were read and approved. Reports were given by the hall manager, treasurer, FAC, and statewide. Loree Lewis gave the youth club report. There were 23 youth, 10 adults, and one guest present at their meeting. They had eight kids attend LIT camp, and they enjoyed it. They also discussed the country store, prize drawing, and the kolache demo in August. We had one new applicant – Lee Jenkins. Motion passed that we accept the applicant. Donnie Hejl welcomed the new member. Under old business, Bill Orsak reported the tree cutting is still behind, and the roof project has a couple of jobs ahead of us before it will be done. Donnie Victorick reported that Snook and New Tabor would be a sponsor for the Kolache Festival. Discussion was held concerning graveling the parking lot. All were in favor that we postpone this decision for a couple of months. Birthdays for July were Josef Orsak on the 10th and Lydia Mae Faust on the 14th. James Schoeneman made a motion, and Hannah Kovar seconded to adjourn the meeting. All were in favor, and the motion passed. What a great party! SPJST fun day was great. Everyone had a great time. We ate well . . . and we drank well . . . and laughed a lot. Not only did the youngsters enjoy the magician, but the adults did as well. The youth had a coloring contest, hoola hoop contest, and boy, did we have the cookies. Thank you to all who brought cookies, and great door prizes, too. The Home Office brought prizes, and the lodge bought prizes; we had donations as well. Thanks to First National Bank of Elgin which gave a silver dollar valued at $40; Walmart gave three - $10 gift cards; Dale Kessel gave seven - $5 gift cards; and Dud and Melba Morris gave a $25 gift donation. The Home Office had great prizes, CDs, cookbooks, umbrellas, lawn chairs, and

many other things that were donated to the lodge for the fun day. We cannot forget Jesse and Linda Pospisil who bought the keg. We had chili dogs made with fresh ground meat. Thanks to Johnny and Irene Vrabel who bought roast and ground the meat so that we had fatfree chili - no canned chili for our guests. We can’t say thank you enough to the Home Office for all the help Without it, this would not have happened again. Brian Vanicek, Patsy Koslovsky, Lynette Talasek and her daughter, Jesse and Linda Pospisil thank you, again. Thanks to Ashlee Davis Silva and her husband Tiago for helping as did Jennifer Davis and Deborah Parker. It’s great to see one of our scholarship winners interested in helping our lodge. Ashlee was awarded the 2007 scholarship from our lodge. Ashlee was in the top 10 percent at Pflugerville High School. Ashlee went to Texas Women’s University graduating magna cum laude May 2011 and finishing this year by graduating from South Texas College of Law/Houston. As you can tell, this grandma is very proud of Ashlee. I should tell you Ashlee took a year off to marry her high school sweetheart Tiago Silva on March 17, 2012. A moment of silence took place for Wilma Perry, one of our special ladies. She was Pauline Morbitzer’s and Betty Lloyd’s sister and the third member of the Ladies Circle who has passed away this spring. They are all missed and a special part of our organization. Business was handled as usual, and several topics were addressed. Due to changing times, we now need to purchase supplies for our meetings. And, thanks to one very generous member, Lydia Alholm, we were able to purchase items that will last us several months. Also discussed was a silent auction to be held during the July meeting. Marlene Bass and Theresa Clay will be in charge of the arrangements. Members are encouraged to bring items that are good as new to share with someone in our Circle. I’ve found something I hope everyone will bid on. Our lovely hostesses for lunch were Mary Ann Krivanek, Marie Keller, JoAnn Wilcox, Lupe Esparza, and Joyce Tesar. Once again, the meal was delicious, and everyone had plenty to eat. Thank you, ladies, for providing the main dishes and for your work in the kitchen. June birthday honorees were acknowledged and serenaded. They were Robyn Brownlee, Lisa Ellsworth, Frank Tesar (playing dominos), Garland Ellsworth, and Doris Maple. Best wishes to Emily Atkins, Carolyn

Belew, Mildred Kidwell, and Helen Kubala for their special days as well. Our special focus for June was to honor our fathers. Theretta Praslicka read a special item from the Vestnik; Joan Shropshire told a story about her dad and her Christmas bicycle; and Sandi Celusniak told how her dad was a hunter and brought a deer head to Mrs. Alholm’s class one year. Theretta brought a picture of her dad in his christening gown and a birthday card from his first birthday. The gown has been used quite a few times since he wore it. John Durham gave a detailed update on activities and projects scheduled for the lodge for the next six months or so. We’ll just let someone from the lodge fill you in as I probably would get times and dates all mixed up.

Other Items of Note Remember to save—labels for education from soup cans, etc., bottle caps, and soda can tabs. Our Gloria Farek collected these items for several different organizations as money raising projects, and we are trying to follow in her footsteps. Mary Ann Krivanek announced that St. Thomas Catholic Church had scheduled a “Taste of St. Thomas” for June 28. Monies made from the event will go into the building fund “pot.” Many of our members attend St. Thomas and are working very hard to build a new, larger church. The journey had been quite an undertaking, and they haven’t reached their goal yet.

A lesson for all of us

How much do we notice as we go through a day? Lisa Beamer on Good Morning America - If you remember, she’s the wife of Todd Beamer who said, “Let’s Roll!” and helped take down the plane over Pennsylvania that was heading for Washington, DC back on 9/11. She said it’s the little things that she misses most about Todd, such as hearing the garage door open as he came home and her children running to meet him. Lisa recalled this story: “I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago whose husband died suddenly of a heart attack. About a week after his death, she shared some of her insight with a classroom of students. As the late afternoon sunlight came streaming in through the classroom windows and the class was nearly over, she moved a few things a side on the

edge of her desk and sat down there. With a gentle look of reflection on her face, she paused and said, “Class is over. I would like to share with all of you, a thought that is unrelated to class, but which I feel is very important. Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love, appreciate, and give of ourselves. None of us knows when this fantastic experience will end. It can be taken away at any moment. Perhaps this is God’s way of telling us that we must make the most out of every single day. Her eyes, beginning to water, she went on, “So I would like you all to make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesn’t have to be something you see, it could be a scent—perhaps of freshly baked bread wafting out of someone’s house—or it could be the sound of the breeze slightly rustling the leaves in the trees, or the way the morning light catches one autumn leaf as it falls gently to the ground. Please look for these things, and cherish them. For, although it may sound trite to some, these things are the ‘stuff’ of life. The little things we are put here on earth to enjoy. The things we often take for granted.” The class was completely quiet. We all picked up our books and filed out of the room silently. That afternoon, I noticed more things on my way home from school than I had that whole semester. Every once in a while, I think of that teacher and remember what an impression she made on all of us, and I try to appreciate all of those things that sometimes we all overlook. Take notice of something special you see on your lunch hour today. Go

Positive Family Caregivers

by Greg and Georgia Fitzhugh SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis

We have been caregivers, and we have listened to caregivers for a few years now. Most caregivers we’ve met are women who are tired, yes, but happy to be taking care of their spouse, their parent, or their adult child. They are happier knowing that this person is getting the best possible care in a place where they are treated with dignity and respect. The male caregivers are proud that they are able to be seen as a strong and reliable, and they value the passing time they still have with their wife, their parent, or adult child who needs them. Why do family caregivers do this? Because they believe it is best for them, for their families, and they are passing on a tradition of caring for those who have cared for them. For most caregivers we know, there is a spiritual purpose in their lives that

Often, it gives them a long-term perspective on life and its meaning. According to a survey published in November, 2007 for Caregiving Today, most family caregivers feel more positive about their experiences than they did just before they took on the responsibility. The survey consisted of a little more than 500 responses in a onemonth period. The survey also found that:

Sixty percent of the caregivers called the experience “very or extremely rewarding,” a 50 percent jump over the number of caregivers who thought in advance they would find the experience “very or extremely rewarding.” Nearly 80 (78.8) percent of the caregivers found the experience to be at least “rewarding,” an increase of more than one-third from initial expectation. Almost 60 percent of the respondents reported an improvement in the quality of their relationship with the person for whom they cared. By contrast, fewer than 10 percent said that their relationship got worse during the time they were caregivers. Social activities of family caregivers tend to diminish. However, the diminished social activities are replaced with an increased quality of relationship with the care recipient.” More than 2/3 of all caregivers (68.7%) said they enjoy the tasks associated with caregiving. However, prior to assuming the role, fewer than half (45.5%) thought they would enjoy caregiving. The amount of satisfaction with caregiving is directly related to the type of disease from which the care recipient suffers. Caregivers of depression sufferers, cancer and cardiac disease have more difficulty than those caring for patients who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure and arthritis. More than three-fourths of caregivers are female. They generally range in age from 35 to 59. The survey is now seven years old, but we find that the general findings are still relevant to the caregivers we have talked with about their caregiving experiences. The downside of caregiving is also mentioned in the survey. Sixty-three percent of caregivers are able to maintain their own health, but about one-

third experienced health problems when caregiving, and one-third said that they are depressed. Over half of caregivers admitted to having financial hardships during caregiving experiences. The difficulties of caregiving situations seem to be found in social isolation, financial expenses, and lack of understanding and support from others. The best experiences of caregiving are found in stronger relationships, satisfaction in accomplishing the daily tasks

of living, and in contributing in a meaningful way to the well-being of loved ones. Somehow, most caregivers find the resources in themselves, in their family members, and in the community to do the job. They find that caregiving adds meaning and purpose for them, and that may be a little surprising. They have found that caregiving was a much better experience than they thought. Positive caregivers make a difference in lives, and they are happy

Grandfather’s Laps By d.knape

Grandfathers sit with their grandsons and listen to them tell their little stories

of where they have been or what they did

it is the biggest story the grandsons can tell the most important thing in their small world

stories begin in grandpa’s laps where closeness and love is shared a bond then is forever joined by what is felt between the lap and the heart

an attraction and a familial bond between the sweetness of youth and the wisdom of age natural to all grandfathers who have laps

and all grandsons who sit in them. —SPJST—

The Well of Life By d.knape

Life is a natural well we gladly drink our fill, our throats are always dry our thirst is never quelled Each day we tap the well as thirstily we refill, assuming that the well has ample water still

One day we are dismayed how quickly years went by, now only a trickle flows the well is going dry

And as to the reason we receive this wry reply, the well was never deep enoughdemand exceeded the supply. —SPJST—

In Memory of Charlie Pesak

Charlie Pesak was born on February 27, 1926, to Innocenc and Albina Pesak at Damon Mound, Brazoria County, Texas. He departed from this world on June 12, 2015, at home surrounded by family at the age of 89 to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Charlie lived in Needville with his wife Joyce where they were active participants in the community. He Charlie Pesak attended school until fifth grade when he “hung up his book satchel.” After that, he helped on his parent’s farm raising animals and crops. When extra money was needed for the family, he worked at a dairy farm in Alvin making $2 a day. He loved hunting, fishing, and frogging. Charlie performed his patriotic duty by serving in the United States Army 7th Infantry Division from September 15, 1944, through November 3, 1946. He was stationed in the Philippines. He was a number one scout. He braved “Purple Heart Canyon” where number two scout, Richard, volunteered to advance first. Richard was killed, and Charlie sustained a shrapnel wound. It was called “Purple Heart Canyon” due to the overwhelming number of men wounded in combat. Charlie never received a purple heart because the medic, who treated him, was going to make a report about the wound but was killed before he could do so. After being released from the army, Charlie returned to the Alvin dairy farm, where he made $5 per day. He worked for a time as a mechanic for his uncle Joe Zubik in Katy. He went

to work for Fort Bend County for a short stint before going to work for Texas Gulf Sulphur Company in 1949 in New Gulf where he moved from carpentry to roughneck to pipe gang pusher and ultimately into a field shop with heavy equipment where he operated bulldozers and drag lines retiring after 33 years. He also drilled water wells with his wife Joyce as his main helper and his family and had a farm of his own. Charlie was always a gracious host, willing to swap jokes and participate in parties. Charlie was a member of Needville St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, VFW Post 3903 Rosenberg, the NRA, SPJST Lodge 81, Needville, and American Legion Post 0271, Rosenberg. He was a devoted family man. Charlie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, an awesome uncle and friend who will be lovingly missed. He was preceded in death by parents Innocenc and Albina Pesak; brothers Joe and Martin Pesak; sister Evelyn Gaidosik; and daughter-in-law Donna Pesak. Charlie loved his church family, attending church and participating in various church functions. Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, June 15 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Needville. The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 16 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Needville with Reverend Charles Teykl officiating. Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Participates in National Junior BETA Convention

On June 24, 2015, my Junior BETA chapter took off to Nashville, Tennessee, for the National Junior BETA convention. It took two days to drive to Nashville, but it was a fun drive! In Nashville, we took a tour of Hendersonville, Tennessee, where many stars lived. At the convention, I ran for the National Junior BETA chaplain position. It started off with an interview that was played when I walked on stage. Then,

17

I had two minutes to give a speech to 5,000 people, and one minute for my group to perform a campaign skit to help me get elected. Afterwards, I had 30 seconds to answer a question about BETA. Although I didn’t get the national position, I will still represent Texas as our chaplain. Michael Hoelscher —SPJST—

Growing Your Genealogy Conference: A Synopsis

The “Growing Your Genealogy” conference, sponsored by Texas Czech Genealogical Society, held on June 27, 2015, was a huge success, as measured by comments from a number of attendees. The conference was held at Caldwell Civic and Convention Center in Caldwell, Texas, with more than 100 in attendance. TCGS conferences are known for quality speakers, presenting information that educates and stirs the minds and memories of those present, and this event was no exception. The day began at 8 a.m. with registration, followed by delicious Czech kolaches, coffee, and juice. As people moved around the room, they recognized friends whom they see only at events such as this. The ‘reunions’ are one of the important reasons that many

enjoy attending these events, time after time. In addition, the extensive sales table, with Czech items such as colorful glass, crystal, textiles, maps, dictionaries, novelty items, and TCGS published books drew the attention of many. Others enjoyed bidding on the large number of “just gotta have” items on the silent auction tables. At 9 a.m., Reverend John Gantt introduced Ronnie Horcica, who has been working in radio, as a volunteer, for more than 27 years. Ronnie hosts the Czech Polka Time on the Bryan/College Station Radio Station KAGC twice each week, rushing to the radio station after his day job as technical services coordinator for the College Station Police Department. After 17 years and three months, he has recently completed his 900th broadcast of this popular polka program. Ronnie’s presentation began with the singing (by those who could sing Czech) of the popular songs, A Ja Sam and Na te Louce Zeleny, after which he presented an interesting report on the history of radio, along with a summary of the way Czech Polka Time was created for the local area, and how it has expanded to worldwide broadcasting due to the emergence of all the “smart” electronic gadgets. The next session on the schedule included two presentations: “Krajina: A Texas Czech Utopia on the Goldenrod Prairie”, presented by Doug Kubicek, along with a session presented by Helmuth Schneider, entitled “Stable Cadastral Map System of the Czech Republic.” No one is more qualified to speak about all things relating to Lavaca County, Texas than Doug Kubicek. In his presentation, Doug sought to help his audience realize that nothing in one’s family’s genealogy should be taken for granted. There are reasons, often not included in family history information, about why the immigrants went to certain areas of Texas. Often, it was the case of seeking their Utopia. Land in Texas was advertised to be

Eugene O’Brien

cheap, and it was often offered to them as they were stepping off the boat. It was the dream of most immigrants to own land, and they probably found it difficult to pass up this opportunity. Sellers were abundant, hoping to realize their financial goals, too. Possibly the immigrant and his family first settled wherever this cheap land was located. Cadastral Maps were found to be a fairly unknown genealogical tool to many who attended Helmuth Schneider’s session about the Stable Cadastral Map System of the Czech Republic. Helmuth explained what these maps are what a genealogist can learn by looking at the maps, and how one can access the maps for various Czech villages which can now be found on the internet. After a tasty lunch of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, and peach cobbler, the afternoon session began with a very interesting demonstration entitled “Writing and Publishing Your Family History Book” presented by Eugene O’Brien. Mr. O’Brien sought to explain the process, costs, and time required to publish a family history book by using either the do-it-yourself method or the commercial printing method. He had several Czech Family History books, which he had published to show during his presentation. He urged those in attendance to get started now, before it is too late, in compiling their family information into a book which would be a cherished keepsake for the family to enjoy for many years to come. James Harkins, manager of public services at the Archives and Records Division of the Texas General Land Office, brought an interesting presentation on “German Resources of the Texas General Land Office’s Archives and Records”. Over 35.5 million documents and 45,000 maps, dating back to 1650 can be found in these records. He focused mainly on the mass German immigration movement to Texas in the mid-19th century. A large per-

centage of TCGS members have German ancestry due to the fact that the Czechs often settled alongside the Germans and sometimes inter-married. Mr. Harkins also shared information about the vast number of historical records at the Texas General Land Office which can be accessed to assist in family research. The final speaker of the day was Luba Ruzicka. Luba was born and educated in Slovakia. After meeting and marrying her husband, who was studying to become a doctor, they left Slovakia, their families, and their lives under Communism to come to the United States for her husband’s further education. When their visas expired, they did not return to Slovakia. They had decided that they wanted freedom like they had become used to in the United States. Because they did not abide by the rules of their visas, they were considered to be deserters and they were never welcome in their homeland again, although they went back numerous times to visit their families. The Ruzicka family lived in New York City, Arizona, and Wisconsin, finally settling in Taylor, Texas, where her husband, Dr. Frank Ruzicka worked as a doctor for 20 years. During that time, Luba was not content to be just a wife, mother, and homemaker. She yearned to have a career of her own, and she established her travel agency, Luba’s Travel, which enabled her to lead guiding tours all over the world, but especially in the Czech
