November 20 has been tentatively

set for a grand opening date for the new Sokol West Gymnasium, according to President Shane Bivins and Secretary-Treasurer Mary Beth Dulock of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood. That date will mark the one-year anniversary since Texas Governor Rick Perry, Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, and Czech Ambassador to the United States Petr Gandalovič joined West Mayor Tommy Muska and Sokol representatives in a groundbreaking ceremony in 2014 for the new gymnasium. Representatives met in the conference room at PointWest Bank in West, Texas, on Monday, July 27, 2015, to receive updates on the construction of the new gymnasium. The gym is being rebuilt after it was destroyed in the fertilizer plant explosion on April 17, 2013. The devastating explosion killed 15 people, 12 of whom were first re-

sponders to a fire burning at West Fertilizer Company. The blast also injured hundreds of residents in the town of 2,800 and destroyed many of its buildings and homes. Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Texas Brian Vanicek of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone opened the informal meeting with a quote from Marcus Aurelius, the last of the Five Good Emperors, “Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart.” Czech Ambassador to the United States Petr Gandalovič expressed his optimism on the great success of rebuilding the gymnasium. “This is great, and I am amazed that something new came up over such tragedy.” The gymnasium will once again house the Sokol Gymnastics Associa-

his is a very special Vestnik issue as it features some very special “people” on pages 12 to 17. Thank you to our SPJST members who submitted photos for the 2015 Vestnik Pet Parade. What adorable “family members” you have! This is my little beauty named Macy. She is always bright-eyed and bushy-tailed . . . literally! All of our cats are rescues, and Macy is no exception. If I had my way, I would save every cat in the world and give them loving homes with endless care and compassion and fulfill their every need! I have loved cats for as long as I can remember. Thankfully, David was raised in a loving household with cats so he shares some of my passion and is a huge help in taking care of our babies! The best thing about the auto accident — if that’s even possible to say — was spending a lot of time with our precious, purring people while I was confined to our home for four months. They surrounded me with so much love and were always around me. It’s like they knew something was not right. When I was told that I would be wheelchairbound for a few months, the first thing David and I wondered about was which kitty would get his or her tail run over first! The unfortunate, unintentional incident happened on the second day at home. Luckily, it wasn’t too bad . . . and surprisingly, everyone learned from it. When the wheelchair rolled in someone’s path, they knew to

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje: please donate by August 7

Hello and Greetings from SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje! As you know, the adult lodge has stopped doing bingo. Bingo was not self-sufficient to continue. Eventually, we voted to stop bingo. This led us to rely on monies from the annual stipend and the few rentals that are contracted to financially support the lodge and the building. With every building, as you know, there are monthly and annual costs, repairs, and not to mention - updates to maintain the building.

With this being said, we are in a crisis where the lodge is lacking monies for the building’s expenses, repairs, and updates. We have voted to hold a prize drawing annually to raise money for the lodge, building, insurance, and repairs. For the lodge to succeed its history and to keep the building, we need your support.

Prizes Needed by August 7 If any member of the lodge or anyone would like to donate to the prize drawing, please contact Norma Enriquez, who has graciously agreed to be the chairman for this event. Her contact number is 979-637-1507. We appreciate any and all donations. If you would please contact Norma prior to August 7 with your donation, so tick-

5

ets can be printed by August 15 to start the selling. The drawing will be held October 11 at our monthly meeting. We are hoping that we will have a family day so that all members will attend. The goal is to raise at least $10,000. The monies will be used to repair the building roof, electrical, and purchase the needed liability insurance. We pray for SPJST, its members, and the success of this drawing. If you have any questions about the event or the lodge situation, please contact President Cathy Garcia at 979-332-1614. Respectfully, SPJST Lodge 40 Officers and Members —SPJST—

Lodge 191, Lufkin plans August 21 dance

Wow! What a July dance with Linda Kaye and the Kool Katz! What a crowd! What good music! Thanks to Kathy Riley, Mary Baker, and Ruth Welch for decorating for pirates. Ladies, the lodge looked great. Also, thanks to all who brought food. There is always a variety of great food, and everything was delicious. This was the lodge’s anniversary dance, and all of the members got in free. So if you are not a member of the lodge, you might want to think about joining. You pay less at the monthly dances, plus you get in free for the July dance. Thanks to all who donated items for the silent auction. There were two tables full of items, and the auction brought in $242. You are greatly appreciated — the ones who brought items and the ones who bid on the items. The 50-50 drawing was $116, and the winner donated it back to the lodge. Two free dance tickets to any dance but New Year’s Eve were won by Barbara Armstrong and Raymond Rowlett. Congratulations to the winners! Thanks to all who participate in the drawing each month. Remember to look at the SPJST Lodge 191 Facebook page for pictures. If you would like to host a dance, please call Ruth Welch at 936-639-

Lodge 117, Robstown Members Participate in Relay for Life

Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 117, Robstown Vice President/FAC Frank Sijansky was selected by the American Cancer Society as a Hero of Hope 2015. Heroes of Hope are cancer survivors and caregivers who have been selected for their commitment to the mission of the American Cancer Society and an abil-

ity to tell their cancer story. Frank got involved to honor his brother who lost his battle in 2014 and because he is a six-year survivor. He put a team together to participate in Relay for Life. Our team was called Chicken Man of Calallen. For the Relay for Life of Northwest Corpus Christi event, we raised

tion of West, one of 34 North American clubs that seek to uphold the “sound body, sound mind” credo of a movement born more than 150 years ago in the Czech lands. Sokol (which means “falcon” in Czech) involves training in athletics – particularly gymnastics – and family-oriented activities. Project Manager Justin Jimenez of K4 Construction stated the gymnasium is between 75 to 85 percent complete. He explained that painting, hanging light fixtures, and prepping the floors are projects that remain to be completed. The goal is for Sokol representatives to walk-through the building in early September to create a punch list. Move-in will then follow.

Designer Cathy Kraemer of Winton Engineering said the project is close to her heart because one of her daughters participated in Sokol West Gymnastics. She explained that the split-face, 12,800-square foot, 80-by-140 building is larger than the previous Sokol West gymnasium. It is also taller and closer to the front of the site. The interior is bright, and the handicapped accessible building will include an office, storage space, snack bar, and a mezzanine area. “And, the memorial stone is in place,” she said, referring to an engraved cornerstone with the Czech message, “Byli jsme . . . a budem” – “We were . . . and we will be.” Czech Prime Minister Sobotka

SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, far right, who serves as Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Texas, speaks during a meeting on the progress of rebuilding Sokol West. The gymnasium and Lone Star Hall were destroyed in the April 2013 fertilizer plant explosion. Pictured, left to right, are Ray Snokhous of Lodge 54, West; Pavlína Gan-

praised the town’s courage at the groundbreaking ceremony in 2014 before tapping an oversized gavel onto the stone. K4 Construction President Keith Helpert thinks the project will come in below budget. The project was reported to be $1.2 million to rebuild the gymnasium. Funds have come from insurance money and many donations, including help from the Czech Republic’s government. Ms. Dulock said they have been paying for the project as it is being constructed, and they have no debts at the time. SPJST established West Benevolence Fund on the day after the explosion. The fund collected close to $94,000 with almost $14,000 donated to Sokol West, including a $10,000 check that was presented at the groundbreaking ceremony. Other donations from the fund have benefited West Volunteer Ambulance, History of West Museum, West Rest Haven, and Waco Foundation. The gymnasium will complete phase one of the two-phase project. “Phase Two is replacing Lone Star Hall,” Ms. Dulock said. “Lone Star Hall will join the first building and be

a part of it.” Lone Star Hall was owned by SPJST Lodge 54, West until 2011 when Sokol West purchased it. The hall hosted many wedding receptions and celebrations throughout the decades. In the meantime, Sokol West leaders are discussing curtaining off the gymnastics equipment to provide a medium-sized rental facility for individuals and groups in the community until Lone Star Hall can be constructed. PointWest Bank President Charles J. Nemec of SPJST Lodge 54, West remarked about the new construction around the town of West. “April 17 could have been a turning point in this community, but instead, it was the

Czech ethics of hard work and getting things done and that makes me proud to be Czech.” Ambassador Gandalovič is pleased that the first phase will serve the community and children. “It’s such a great progress, and I will be proud to report to the Prime Minister that what he broke ground for is really something that has taken shape, and it will be welcoming the children soon.” The Ambassador then thanked Ms. Dulock and Sokol, the building construction team, SPJST for assisting Sokol . . . “and everybody who has any credit for this good thing of progress. It represents the spirit of the whole town. I am so proud that the

Czech Republic has such a great mark in the city of West,” he said. “This just didn’t happen,” former Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Texas Ray Snokhous of Lodge 54, West said. “The day after the explosion, the Ambassador was here, the Governor of Texas was here, and he brought a delegation in. The governor communicated directly with the Czech government in Prague about the situation and the tragedy. As a result, they appropriated about $110,000. The spirit was created by the fact that so many people came to our rescue to give us the moral support that we needed and that is what it takes to bring it all around. And, you, Sir, were very responsible for doing that. You kept us alive and we applaud you.” Ms. Dulock also thanked SPJST for funds donated to purchase mats. “The kids are able to continue practicing, and because of this, we will have 20 to 30 kids who will perform and represent Sokol at this year’s Westfest.” Clarice Snokhous of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston announced a Sister Cities International partnership between West and Kunovice in the Czech Republic. Texas currently has two other Sister Cities partnerships with Czech towns. These include Dallas and Brno, and East Bernard and Hvozdna. Ms. Snokhous announced that Kunovice Mayor Ivana Majíčková will serve as the parade marshall for the Westfest parade set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 5. “It’s amazing how much fruit is coming from this tragedy,” Ms. Snokhous said. “I just hope there is enough enthusiasm and funding for many, many years.” American Sokol Executive Board First Vice President Bob Podhrasky of SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas congratulated Sokol West representatives. “This is a monumental task that you pulled off in this 150th year of Sokol in the United States.” He shared that the first Sokol event was postponed because Americans were mourning the death of President Abraham Lincoln. “That’s how far we go back, and we must keep the fires burning.” He thanked the Ambassador and SPJST. “Without this support, we would not have the profile or success for this project.” After the meeting, attendees traveled across town to the new Sokol West gymnasium for a tour of the progress. The building is scheduled to open in September. Donations for West Benevolence Fund can be mailed to SPJST, PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503. —SPJST—

In Memoriam

In Memory of Marvin E. Marek

A much loved husband, father and grandfather Marvin E. Marek, 80, of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully at Hospice Christopher House on July 25, 2015. He was embraced by love of his family. He bravely underwent open heart surgery in April and came through only to discover soon after that he had a bone marrow disease that sadly Marvin E. Marek kept him from ever recovering. He gave it the good fight to try and fight it, but it was not in God’s plan. He was born August 12, 1934, in Abbott, Texas, to Rose and Emil Marek. He was the third of four children. Dad had three siblings, Annie, Bessie and Billy. Dad lost his father when he was only five years old and being the oldest son, he had to assume responsibility for the family farm at an early age. He learned quickly how to manage money and take care of family. He had to go to the bank and get a loan for the farm as a young teen. He learned early what it took to survive and be a good provider. He was only able to complete eighth grade because he had to run the farm. They were poor, and life was hard on the farm. He joined the United States Air Force when he was 18 in 1952, and there he obtained his GED. He met the love of his life Evelyn Machac. He courted her through letter writing exchanges where they got to know one another. They fell in love and married on July 2, 1955, in Penelope. Dad became Catholic for mom, and they raised their children in the Catholic faith. He was a devout Catholic until his death. Dad was in the Air Force for 23 years and was stationed in various locations around the world. He did a tour in Vietnam in 1968-1969. Once retiring from the military in Austin, he began a career for the VA. While working there, he put himself through college at night. He received a programming degree and was a systems analyst for the next 20 years. He retired from the VA in 1995 and enjoyed 20 more years of good times traveling

to various places in the United States with his wife, polka dancing with his wife and their many friends, fishing and hunting with his family, gambling trips to Shreveport, and enjoying many wonderful times with his family and his two granddaughters that he simply adored. Marvin was a member of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Evelyn Marek of Austin; daughter Debbie and husband Jayson of Manchaca; son Dennis and wife Jana of Buda; daughter Jan and husband Henry of Austin; son Gary and wife Becky of Austin; granddaughters Katy of San Marcos and Amanda; great-grandson Elijah of Bastrop; brother Billy Marek and wife Helen of Austin and their family; and numerous other family and friends. Dad will always be remembered for his very generous heart; for instilling in his family a strong and dedicated work ethic; for being such a good provider to his wife and family and to anyone in need; and for his special brand of humor. He was a true example of deep and loyal devotion to family and for that we are so grateful. His spirit will live on in all of the lives he touched. He was very much loved and will be greatly missed. A private service was held for immediate family. Memorial donations may be made to Austin Hospice - The Christopher House, for the invaluable service of compassion, dignity and peace they lovingly provide for end of life. —SPJST—

Tips to save money on pet care

(StatePoint) Being a great pet parent can be an expensive proposition if you aren’t careful. Spoiling your furry friends doesn’t have to cost a pretty penny. The discount experts at Dollar General are offering pet care tips for those on a budget.

DIY Grooming Although it may be tempting to drop your pet off at a professional groomer to be bathed and brushed, you can save a fortune by doing it yourself. Set aside a time each week or month to bathe, brush and pamper your pet. You can even get the kids involved! Your pet will love the extra attention, and you will love the savings.

Watch What They Eat It’s important to find a food that works for your pet’s dietary needs and falls within your budget. For great deals, consider shopping at a discount retailer. For example, Dollar General offers exclusive pet food and treats brands, Forever Pals and EverPet.

Both offer a variety of choices at an affordable price that will make both you and your pet happy. They also carry a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee so it’s a risk-free trial if you aren’t fully satisfied with the products. You can also save money on pet food by following label instructions on food packaging and not over-feeding pets. With a proper and balanced diet, you can help keep your pet healthier and happier, and spend less in the process.

your pets means the world to them and is a great stress reliever for you. Plus, it doesn’t cost a cent to shower your pet with affection!

Smart Shopping Sometimes the cost of owning and caring for a pet can be stressful when trying to budget for the rest of your family. Instead of shopping for items like treats, flea and tick medication, pet shampoo, leashes and collars at a pet-specific store or your veterinarian’s office, consider shopping at Dollar General or online at dollargeneral.com, which has a variety of merchandise for your pets’ needs at affordable prices. With more than 11,800 stores nationwide, you’re likely to find a store nearby. You can also visit pinterest.com/mydollargeneral for more helpful tips. With some time, attention and smart budgeting, you can be the best pet parent you can be. —SPJST—

winning submissions. The Embassy of the Czech Republic celebrates the upcoming fall Mutual Inspirations Festival 2015, dedicated this year to Czech shortstory writer, political thinker, and playwright Karel Čapek (1890-1938). Karel Čapek is foremost renowned for introducing the word “robot” to the languages of the world in his science fiction play R.U.R., which stands for Rossum’s Universal Robots. Suggested by his brother Josef during a brainstorming session, the word robot is derived from the Czech word “robota” or “forced labor.” The futuristic play features nonhumans, who revolt, leading to the extinction of the human race. Written in 1920, the play was revolutionary for its time and has continued to inspire future generations to this day. —SPJST—

WANTED MEMBER REFERRALS

When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there’s no substitute for member referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he or she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest.

MONTHLY CONTESTS! All referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Wal-Mart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits SPJST by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge.

QUALIFY FOR THE DRAWING AT THE 2016 BANQUET! All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Wal-Mart gift cards to be awarded at the SPJST Awards Banquet in 2015.

Please help us to ensure that the leads that you pass on are quality leads. We would not want any sales agent to devote precious time to calling on unqualified leads. A good referral is someone who an SPJST member has spoken with about membership and/or life insurance in SPJST and who has expressed an interest in joining. In visiting with your prospective lead, make sure that he or she knows that an SPJST Sales Agent will call. Referral cards are available from the SPJST Home Office and online at www.spjst.org.
