District Two Youth Win State Royalty Crowns
Approximately 250 SPJST youth
from across Texas met at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, August 1, 2015, to showcase their knowledge and skills at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). The 2015 competition involved participants in grades kindergarten to high school senior. They competed in 15 events, testing their skills in areas such as construction, foods (cakes), handicraft, photography (sports), sewing, public speaking, and talent. The event also featured a special category which is a surprise until the day of the competition. This year, participants were instructed to illustrate SPJST with an assortment of crayons and markers and
a sheet of white paper. District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and gain recognition for their achievements. As the youth compete, they develop self-confidence and sharpen their decision-making abilities. They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members. SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members. Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualified to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs were held in June and

ongratulations to all State Youth Achievement Day participants! What talented youth are involved in SPJST. They showcased their entries on Saturday, August 1 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Some youth took home gold, silver, and bronze medals. Some youth took home trophies and cash awards. And, that’s highly commendable. But, the youth who displayed their entries but did not receive awards are actually the ones who took home the most . . . It’s that very valuable experience that will help them in all of life’s endeavors. Winning is nice, but the experience that you obtain from participating is what really matters in the long run. Great job, youth participants!

Sincere Sympathy We extend our heartfelt sympathy to District Five Publication Committee member Lorenda Baldwin of Lodge 139, Danbury and her family. Lorenda’s husband David passed away on July 30, 2015. His funeral service was held Monday, August 3 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Danbury. Dave accompanied Lorena to the Publication Committee meetings each year, and he always had a funny joke or cute story to share. We will miss him. —SPJST—

In honor of John Hus Day in early July, pianist Carolyn F. Beseda, left, presented a reading on Hus’ life. “blowout” of an anniversary party recently. It was a wonderful time for everyone who attended. The Grand March, food, and music were outstanding. There were friends of theirs who had never experienced a Czech party, and I am certain they had a blast. Our grandsons came with us and could not believe what was going on. Now that’s what being a Czech is all about! The business portion of the meeting proceeded with no minutes being provided due to computer problems of the secretary; however, Margaret Laymance gave a fine account of our finances. As Sunshine Chairman, Margaret sent a get well card to Catherine Ann Davis who was still in the hospital after her recent surgery. We asked if there were others who might be under the weather, and the only person mentioned was Mary Ann Adcock who had fallen recently. She was reported to being fine and just a little leery of getting out that day. There were, however, a couple of regulars missing and hopefully they are doing okay just busy elsewhere or trying to stay out of this blasted heat. Sandi Celusniak, Secretary Margaret, Vice President Theretta, President Cathy, Stanley Krenek, and Roy Thieme were our July birthday celebrants in attendance. President Cathy passed the mic around for each one of our ladies to say a little about themselves. The men were playing dominoes so we didn’t bother them. Then to our horror, we forgot to sing the “Happy Birthday” song. Yikes! Although our hostesses were few, they set up a wonderful lunch. Joy Booe, Lisa Juran, and Norma McLendon were in the kitchen, along with Garland Ellsworth helping out more than a teeny bit. Thank heavens for Garland; he makes the work “tolerable.” Lisa Juran shared activities scheduled for the lodge hall, and I’ll not revisit them. However, they were listed in the Vestnik that came out the last week of July. So check there for details. One upcoming celebration I might mention will be Heritage Day scheduled for September 19. So mark your calendars and plan to come join the activities. Although we were having the auction, several of our members did bring door prizes to be shared. The popular prize for this month was a small pan and a packaged mix for one cinnamon roll. They were so cute and fun to receive. After business was finished, Theretta shared a few more words of wisdom, and we adjourned to further

Running Track By d.knape
What I’ve Learned In Life is that it is a grueling race
which starts from the minute you get up to the minute you lay down to sleep all day it’s a fight to overcome each little hurdle
yet what a feeling it is what a sense of accomplishment follows as you leap each obstacle and ready for the next
the race is very demanding it is a circular track yet after each stretch you get more comfortable each lap builds confidence
the track of life is a marathon at times it leaves you winded but the running of it lets you learn from the experience
and with it comes the joy of landing on your feet. —SPJST—

In Memory of David Baldwin
David S. Baldwin, Jr., age 77, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at his home. Visitation was held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, August 2 at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton, Texas, with a rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass was at 10 a.m. Mon- David Baldwin day, August 3 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Danbury. Interment followed in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Danbury. He was born March 29, 1938, in Houston, Texas, to David S. and Edna Cook Baldwin. He graduated from Jeff Davis High School in Houston. As a young man, David enjoyed rodeos and dancing. He attended Sam Houston State University before serving his country in the United States Army. Upon his return, Dave began his career as a Draftsman with Shell Oil
where he met Lorenda. They married April 14, 1961. Several years later, they settled in Alvin, and Dave worked for Monsanto – Chocolate Bayou Chemical Plant until his retirement in 1993. As their children were growing up, if Dave wasn’t working, his weekends were spent helping their kids with 4H and FFA projects, gardening, fishing, playing cards, and/or dancing. From his meticulous yard work to his “just so” starched Wranglers, he may have been accused of being a perfectionist a time or two. No denying, Ol’ Dave Baldwin always had a good joke to share . . . or two, or three! In 1996, Dave and Lorenda bought her parents’ home place in Danbury. For several years, they traveled two to three times a week following their favorite western swing bands. David was a member of SPJST Lodge 139, Danbury and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Lorenda Lostak Baldwin; sons Monte Baldwin (Tammi Byrd), Troy Baldwin and girlfriend Amber Korenek; daughters Rhenda Baldwin and boyfriend Jeff Olsovsky, Gina Maness
(Jimmy); brother Danny Baldwin (Dani); brothers-in-law Lonnie Lostak (Eloise), Harold Lostak, (Risa), and former brother-in-law Wayne Garner; grandchildren Wesley and Sheldon Baldwin, Brooke and Hannah Parker, and Madison and Holden Dickerson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents David S. and Edna Cook Baldwin; parents-in-law Tommie “T.H.” and Gladys Lostak; and sister-in-law Mollie Lostak Garner. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church or charity of your choice. He will be greatly missed by the officers and members of SPJST Lodge 139, Danbury. —SPJST—

State Youth Director shares August updates
Dear SPJST Youth Leaders, It is amazing how fast July 2015 has come and gone! By the time you read this newsletter, we will have celebrated the achievements of our SPJST youth at State Youth Achievement Day and will have crowned our 52nd State Royalty Court. I am very proud of the number of youth that participate in our youth program. SPJST Youth Camps have come to an end. I have had a great time with all the youth, District Youth Counselors, their assistants, youth leaders, and chaperones. SPJST members are like family to me, and this summer I feel so blessed to have been given the time to enjoy fun times and getting to know everyone even more. I have seen so many great Mardi Gras crafts and have really enjoyed watching the “good times roll,” not to mention - lots of great laughs. Besides the usual activities at camp such as high ropes, archery, swimming, and boating, each district provided their youth with other unique activities such as dance lessons, haunted hay rides, improv, peddle cars, SPJST football, and water slides. I really enjoyed watching the youngest of the groups learn to dance and the oldest let loose and just be silly. This is what makes my job a lot of fun — having the opportunity to see how creative our District Youth Counselors and the Assistant District Youth Counselors are! I applaud each of you for the time and devotion you give our youth and youth program.
Grandparents Day is September 13 Grandparents Day is Sunday, September 13. Remember all the wonderful grandparents who have been so special in your lives. It’s also a day for families. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day. It can be a time to discover one’s roots and even a time to learn patience, understanding, and appreciation for the elderly - the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations.
las on Sunday, October 11. That’s Heritage Day and once again, SPJST lodges in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be represented by their members at the celebration which takes place just inside the entrance to Fair Park. The SPJST Home Office will also help again with this year’s Heritage Day, and we invite you to come out for a good time. Fraternally yours, Lynette Talasek State Youth Director —SPJST—

Puppets Bring New Life to Old Czech Songs and Stories If you ever go to the Czech Republic, make plans to see a puppet show and plan on having a great time. Czech puppet theater is to oday considered the best in Europe and among the best worldwide. Czzech puppets started out as simple stick forms which later evolved into ha h nd puppets. Puppets on strings were introduced in 1563. It was the pupp peteer's job to bring the puppet to life by manipulating its movement and providing with a voice and personality. By 1750, puppet shows had become an enjoyable art form in the Czech Lands. The Czech puppets were traditionally hand-carved from f wood or made from plaster. They represented all kinds of characters raanging from devils, witches and wizards to clowns, kings and princesses. Early Czech puppeteers roamed Central Europe telling stories and ent n ertaining crowds.
A Closer Look Pictured, at right, is the puppet known as Kaspárek. Kaspárek is a comic character who appears in many Czech puppet theater plays. Used widely as a teaching tool in the Czech Republic, it is common for elementary school children to participate in puppet theater productions. Kaspárek, pictured here, is part of the The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center collection of 13 puppets made in 1875 and brought to America in 1923. The puppets were donated to the museum by Bob and Ann Zvolanek of Dallas, Te exas.
Many times families operated travelling puppet theaters. It was a common practice for the puppeteers to pass their skills, scripts and puuppets down through the generations. Matej Kopecky was considered one o of the greatest puppeteers of all time. His direct descendants still pe p rform in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic. In the early 20th century, permanent puppet theaters and puppeetry associations were established throughout what is now the Czeech Republic. At present in the Czech Republic, there are an estimated 1,000 folk puppet theaters, 2,000 puppet theaters connected to schools and cultural organizations, and innumerable family puppet theaters which are not coun ount nted in any offficial tally. The puppet shows feature the work of modern pl p aywrights as well as traditional folk stories. As a result, the puppet theaters have helped to revive many old Czech sonngs and stories which had almost been forgotten. Past State Queen Awarded Runner-up in Miss Austin Texas Teen Pageant
Hello, Readers! I hope everyone’s summer is going fantastic . . . I know mine is going splendid! A couple months ago, I competed in the Miss Austin Texas pageant, which is a preliminary to the Miss Texas Teen USA pageant. What an honor it was to compete with such accomplished young women in our area! We each competed in the following categories: interview, swimsuit, and evening gown. As my first prelim pageant, I’m very proud to state that I got fourth runner-up and was a finalist in both, best in swim and most photogenic. It is such a great system by providing young women like myself with life skills such as public speaking. We gain
so much confidence and truly become who we are. I’m proud to say that so many doors are opening from exlike periences these. However, none of this would’ve been possible without my supporters. I appreciate everyone who helped in the process! All my mentors, sponsors, family, and friends . . . mean the world to me! I cannot wait until November for the Miss Texas Teen USA pageant . . . and furthermore what the future holds in store! Thanks again to everyone . . . Much love! Sun dials (far SD) are a treatment for detection of a time in dependence on a seeming shift of Sun over the Earth. Through sun irradiated object casts a shadow and afterwards the top position of the shadow is possible to detect the time. I moved to Taylor when my son and his wife found this place this wonderful place. Everyone here is so friendly and nice. Staff, employees, and residents are so willing and able to help in so many ways. There are so many fun things to do here. Today, we visited the Blanton Museum of Art down at the University of Texas. It was wonderful.
Lots of Entertainment and Fun
My name is Ruby Rakes. My husband Clarence and I have been married for 63 years. We came to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in March 2012. We moved here from Dumas, Texas, a small town north of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Our reason for moving here is that our daughter and her husband live here in Taylor, and we needed to be near them. We also have some of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that are in the area, too. We feel fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place. The staff is great, and they are very helpful in making everything pleasant. We find the staff and residents friendly Residents Clarence and Ruby Rakes and always willing to help. We enjoy the church services, musical entertainment, and bingo. There is always some kind of entertainment we can choose to attend. We would recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living to anyone.
Beautiful Place and the Staff is Great

WANTED MEMBER REFERRALS
When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there’s no substitute for member referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he or she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest.
MONTHLY CONTESTS! All referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Wal-Mart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits SPJST by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge.
QUALIFY FOR THE DRAWING AT THE 2016 BANQUET! All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Wal-Mart gift cards to be awarded at the SPJST Awards Banquet in 2015.
Please help us to ensure that the leads that you pass on are quality leads. We would not want any sales agent to devote precious time to calling on unqualified leads. A good referral is someone who an SPJST member has spoken with about membership and/or life insurance in SPJST and who has expressed an interest in joining. In visiting with your prospective lead, make sure that he or she knows that an SPJST Sales Agent will call. Referral cards are available from the SPJST Home Office and online at www.spjst.org.
