Sincere Sympathy We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of former District Five Youth Counselor Marie Stayton of Lodge 196, Houston-West. Marie passed away on August 12. Her funeral service was held August 14 in Houston. Sister Marie served as District Five Youth Counselor from 1987 to 2003. I had the pleasure of working with her for several years in the Youth Department. There was never a dull moment with Ms. Marie around! She was a very special lady who loved SPJST and the youth members. —SPJST—

Don Mears
Continued from Page 1.
Mears came to the business a few months later and worked on the Věstník, as well as other printing needs of SPJST, including brochures for the SPJST Library and Museum, now the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. When Gresham’s Graphics closed in 1991, Mears opened his own business, Mpress Graphics, which he owned and operated until 1996. Mears then began studying computer graphics at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. While a student at UMHB, he was the Director of Publications for the university. After graduating, he worked for a large printing firm in Waco. He eventually found his way back to Temple. “I’m not Czech,” said Mears; “but when I moved here I got very familiar with the Czechs here. I found them to be the most friendly – and the most fun – people. They still are. That’s why I applied for the job at the Museum.” At the time, Sandi Wicker was executive director of the Museum. Wicker was hired to facilitate the transition of the SPJST LAM to a separate non-profit entity. She also oversaw the move of the collection from the basement of the SPJST Home Office to the present building on French Street. Wicker hired Mears as curator and the two worked together to design the new Museum facility and displays. “When I came, the building was halfway complete. To me, it was an enjoyable time because we had a clean palette.” They also produced “Czech Feszt,” a one-day outdoor festival that drew thousands for three consecutive years. “Sandi and I got along real well together,” Mears said. “I pretty much had free reign in designing the displays,” said Mears. “I was able to do my own thing, so to speak.” When asked what has been most fulfilling about the job, Mears said it was being able to use those carpenter skills and also to have the freedom to design the displays. “What is fulfilling about this job, is that I’ve been able to use those carpenter skills. I still enjoy doing that today; I have my own shop.” In fact, one of the reasons Mears said that he is retiring now is that he and his wife, Crystal, will be remodeling a home on some acreage in the country on Elm Grove Road in Belton. “This was a wonderful opportunity to work with SPJST. Even though I worked with them before, I’ve loved everyone there. At Gresham’s, I got to know Rudy and Maxine Sefcik, who
3
lived in West and would come on Fridays so that we could put the Věstník together, and I worked with Brian Vanicek when he was editor of the Věstník. I’ve really appreciated how the Věstník has promoted the Museum over the years. The support has been great from Melanie Zavodny and most recently from Brian Vanicek, with his ‘All Things Czech’ series.” “I’ve also enjoyed working with Kenny Lange here at the Museum,” said Mears. “We have a good working relationship. Frankie Klinkovsky was our archivist until he passed away last year. He was a lot of fun and very beloved here at the Museum,” he said. Mears, Lange, and Klinkovsky were and are well-known in Temple, often representing the Museum in their sharp-looking red shirts embroidered with the Museum’s logo, which Mears designed. Mears also praised the Museum’s board of directors. Jerry Milan of Fort Worth is president of the board. “You couldn’t ask for a better board,” he said. “All of the members have been exceptional, wonderful people. They come here and work hard for the Museum.” “The most impressionable thing I remember is what happened at the Convention in 2012,” Mears said. “Jerry stood up and gave a passionate plea for support for the Museum.” The Convention was having a 50-50 fundraiser where three winners would get percentages of the money taken in from ticket sales. “The first person who won donated the winnings to the Museum. That set the standard; so every winner after him did the same thing,” said Mears. “That impressed me that that’s how much they wanted to keep their heritage alive.” “I feel like I can leave now because of our new administrator Susan Chandler,” said Don. I feel like I’m leaving it in good hands.” “We are losing a great talent in Don,” said Chandler, museum administrator. “He can design and build almost anything and in a very short time, too. He kept this museum going for years even though he worked on a part-time basis and he always represented it well in the community.” Mears said that it has also been interesting to get to know other Czech heritage organizations, such as Texas Czech Genealogical Society and Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. “I’ve totally enjoyed my semi-retirement working here at the museum,” Mears said. “Seeing all the support from the Czech community and meeting the visitors makes me wish I was Czech. They’ve made me feel that way.” —SPJST—

Lodge 9, Snook’s junior and senior group talents won first place. We had no new applicants. Under old business, the tree and the roof have not been done. Mrs. Faust reported that the Kolache Festival needs kolache entries and judges. Lodge 15 Buckholts plans appreciation event
The regular meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was conducted in proper sequence at the cool Post Office Cafe on Monday, August 10, 2015. Mary Helen Rodriguez led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of honor was dedicated to the prior members who served so faithfully and to the senior members who are struggling with the daily heat index. We had expected A.W., Jr. and Lamerle, our projects’ officer, but they were unable to attend. The dedicated Dot Tomascik was back, looking great, and went right to work. In old business, our discussion centered around our future events and the planning strategy for a successful and different type of appreciation thank you to the membership. First, we unanimously agreed on a proclamation of agreement in support of the SPJST Home Office staff and each department’s support for our requests. We are a blessed group to have every phone call answered by a live, kind person and not a computer-generated message. The available response is always immediate, and the followthrough is par excellence. Secondly, we have repeated requests for a polka mass for the many who have never participated in such. Of course, our first choice is the hope of a reunion of the Vrazels, but Alfred said we may have waited too long. Other suggestions include the Praha Brothers and the Austin Polka Band. Selecting the calendar date with no other groups having an event is being researched. Thirdly, we have a new membership printout, and too many members need an update to correct or update their addresses. The fourth item is the food, and we may have a fatted steer-half donated by a member in the cattle business. Our cost would be our share

of the processing fee. Folks are most encouraging about this event that we plan this fall. In new business, Mary Helen Rodriguez was elected to the office of assistant vice president and sat in for A.W., Jr. during the meeting. In closing, names were drawn, and all received a door prize of selection. Sandi Fischer had prepared her famous King Ranch Chicken Casserole (found in the SPJST cookbook), and the dish is exceptionally delicious. Sandi also caters events and prepares meals for many folks who are homebound and need supplemental meals and grocery shopping assistance. Thanks, Sandi, you are truly an everyday hero. Lodge 18, Elgin welcomes new members
What a July in Elgin! The hot days of summer are here. We need rain in this area, but it doesn’t seem to be in the forecast. Trustees are busy working on the youth room and the upkeep of the hall. We are pleased to announce that we have two new members. Bill and Lorie McCrary were accepted as new members in Lodge 18. Welcome, Bill and Lorie. Things are looking up at Lodge 18. We would love to see some of the great members who helped in getting this lodge to where we are. Come to a meeting and see how we can improve the operation of the lodge. The dances on Sunday are a lot of fun, and the western dances seem to be doing better. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon in a cool, family setting. Many bring their birthday parties on a Sunday afternoon and what fun to see young and old enjoying an afternoon together. We have too many families not spending time together. You know if you start when the children are young, it will continue as they get older. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Johnny Vrabel and guest Megan Mc Crary. Doris Brian stated that they would

Lodge 24, Cyclone to host August 22 dance
SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone met on a hot, dry night in Flag Hall in the coolness of the youth room. The meeting was called to order at 7:12 p.m. after a report by the Maddux family about the Corpus Christi Get Away. President Daniel Wilde led the Pledge of Allegiance and silent prayer for the sick and departed. Shirley Hoelscher read the minutes of the last meeting, and they were ap-
proved as read. Linda Wilde gave the treasurer’s report involving the change to the new bank for both the lodge account, and the bar account that is handled by Mr. Maddux. Youth Leader Brenda Maddux gave the youth report. They had a pizza party on July 15 at the hall. At State Youth Achievement Day, Jennifer Hoelscher won first place in pictorial arts; Abby Hoelscher won second place in individual talent; Macey Malcik won second place in photography and third place in needlework; and Meghan Malcik won third place in needlework. We are justifiably proud of their hard work and talent. Old business was to honor the bid by Terry Taylor to fix the cooler.
August 22 Dance at Flag Hall New business was a dance to be held Saturday, August 22 at Flag hall from 7 to 11 p.m. with music by the All Around Czech Band - a group of young men who are members of families of musicians. Many in the band have won contests of major competitions. We look forward to helping the band break into the music world. We
invite your attendance. The kitchen will be open featuring President Wilde’s famous hamburgers. A birthday was celebrated by Jonathan Maddux on August 18. No anniversaries were announced. On the sick list was Dewayne Mesecke. One of our longtime members and officer for many years, Doris Svoboda is moving to a retirement center in Schulenburg. This writer appreciates her help for many years, and she should know that our lodge is held up by her strong leadership as well as by her late husband Johnny. We are grateful for her many quilts, too. For the lodge, Bobby Hoelscher, Reporter —SPJST—

should be something all of us need to hear and know. Spread the word so all our members come, and invite your friends. Darlene Tompkins reported on sending thinking of you and get well cards to Lorraine Cross, Tracy Horn, Ella Greer, Ann Conner, and Annie Whitsell. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to August celebrants Betty Krenek, Margaret Sears, and Pat McWilliams. May you all have many more birthday celebrations. Door prizes were donated by Paula Arsenault (three) and Lorraine Cross. Thanks, ladies! We had four happy winners. The 50/50 dollar games were won by Lupe Esparza and Paula Arsenault. Congratulations! Julie, our speaker, was introduced. She is a school teacher in Keller, Texas, and teaches eighth graders. She has been researching and teaching about the Holocaust. Last year, she saw something on the internet that there was going to be a one-week class in Auschwitz and decided she was going. She said she could afford the class, but needed help with the airline ticket. She tried getting a grant, went to everyone in the ISD, and finally got some help from someone in New York. The class stayed at a hotel across the road from Auschwitz, and each day they had class in a different building. Sometimes it was in the sleeping quarters, gas chamber, dining room, etc. The rail tracks ran through the center and when the train arrived, each car was packed with folks just like “sardines.” The small children usually died during the trip as they suffocated having to stand between the grownups. Julie had photos she had taken projected on the screen and told us about the building and what went on during these sad times. Everyone certainly enjoyed her presentation. Julie had several books she purchased

I also saw Betty and Stanley Krenek, Pat McWilliams, and Lupe Esparza helping out. Thanks to all for a great job. Rose Ann, you were missed, but Lola took care of all the decorations for you. Grace was said, a great fried chicken lunch was enjoyed, and games were played. A good time was had by all. The next meeting will be on September 2. We all need to bring a dish for lunch, and don’t forget we will have the Lake Worth Fire Marshall as our speaker. Stay cool, and see you then. News On my way home from the meeting, I stopped by Anna Johnson’s
house. It was too hot of a day for her to get out. She does send her thanks to Debbie Skrasek for sending her some brownies left over from lunch. Anna asked me about Aggie Reznicek so after leaving her house, I stopped by the nursing home for a visit. Aggie was sitting in a wheelchair in the lobby; she looked so nice with hair pulled back in a ponytail. I spoke to her in Czech, and she answered back in Czech. She asked me several times for my name. Sometimes I answered in English and sometimes in Czech. She didn’t recognize my name, but that is okay. She told me all about how she likes the place she is staying at. Everyone is so nice, and all help each other and how good the food is. Hearing this was good enough. When I left, she answered with na shledanou (see you later), which pleased me. I also had a nice visit with Betty Landsfeld. She told me all about the
Liska family reunion held at Ennis Sokol in June. She said folks from all over the United States were there and how much she enjoyed visiting with everyone. The Liska family even had a special mass at St John’s Church, and she said the church was full. It is always fun to visit with Betty as we know a lot of the same folks. Lydia Allholm invited me to Senior Prom Night at the Wellington where she lives in a retirement home. I told her I would go and sit with Frances Matthews. I knew she wouldn’t be dancing as she is in a wheelchair. It turned out to be a nice evening. They had a lady that sang to recorded music, and she sang all the old “pretty” songs. All the ladies wore their “Sunday best” and some even had on long dresses. Most of the men wore suits, and there was even one in a tux. All the ladies were given wrist corsages, and men had boutonnieres. I was surprised to see so many of them dancing. They came in with a walker or in a wheelchair and still were able to get up to do the slow dance. Lydia enjoyed her few dances, the manager danced with all the ladies, and one of the residents was a good dancer and he, too, danced a lot. Lydia was homecoming queen in high school and still had her corsage with all the ribbons hanging down so she wore it. She did look nice dressed in a peach Sunday dress. They had a food table with crackers, cheese, fruit, cookies, and beverages of pivo, vino, and soft drinks. A queen and king were selected, door prizes were given, and the residents certainly had a good time. So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Resolution of Sympathy
We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, JOHN WILLIAM MOON, age 45, who returned home to live with his heavenly Father on Monday, August 3, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer. John was born on August 12, 1969, in Houston, Texas. He had many wonderful memories of growing up in that area, especially John Moon exploring the forest from day start to end near their Cypress home. He moved to Temple when he was a junior in high school. John was a 1987 graduate of Temple High School. He then attended Texas A&M University. Although originally a business major, he quickly changed his mind with his first visit to the architecture building on campus one night. As soon as he saw the drawings on the wall, he knew what he was meant to do for a career. John graduated from Texas A&M in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture. He lived in Dallas working at Lambert’s and NJB for a short while. He moved back to Temple when he married his high school sweetheart Kandee Bulls on July 16, 1994. John worked as a landscape architect for TBG in Austin for several years. As his children grew older, he felt the need to work closer to home. He accomplished his dream of opening his own architectural illustration business in July 2002 with the creation of MoonDesign. John was a man of great faith. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. He lived his life following the example of Christ. He was selfless. He never was concerned about himself, but about what he could do to better the lives of others. If he saw a need, he would try his best to meet it. He lived a very humble life. He was a man of many talents, but
was never boastful. He did not care about job titles or how many letters after his name on his business card, but just working hard at what he loved to provide for his family and make the world a better, prettier place one project at a time. He knew that he was blessed with a special gift to not only visualize design, but to actually produce it. He knew it was something that needed to be shared. He spent countless hours volunteering at universities and working side by side with his work colleagues mentoring, training, teaching them his special techniques and the process of design. He loved knowing that his artistic legacy would not be lost, but could live on through the ones he taught as they pay it forward so that he could continue to help others for years to come. The most important thing to John was his family. He was a wonderful example of what a husband, father, and son should be. He always put his family first. His favorite thing to do in life was to take his family on what he called “adventures.” Rock climbing in his Jeep, exploring caves, the art of rock-skipping at the lake, and making an original hiking path just to see where it led were just a few examples. He was successful in giving his children his love of nature, and they will carry it on forever. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. John was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Lee and Opal Scarpinato; and paternal grandfather Austin Moon. He is survived by wife Kandee Moon of Temple; son Tyler Moon of Temple; daughters Kaylee Moon and Emily Moon, both of Temple; mother Sandy Rogers and husband Joe of Temple; father Jim Moon and wife Amy of Houston; brother Mike Moon and wife Marianne of Paradise; paternal grandmother Marcella Moon of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; and many other family members and friends. Services were held at 4 p.m., Friday. August 7 at Dossman Funeral Home with Bishop Gregory Jaffers and Brother Jay Atwood officiating. He will be laid to rest at Flint Creek Cemetery. Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: end of summer bonding
This year, we packed for our usual end of summer get away trip, but left behind one major thing - my brother. He chose to stay home and hang out with some of his classmates before they parted ways for college. Although I am used to him always being around, I was excited for this one-on-one trip with my mom, and I was more thrilled to get rid of him.
Our first day, we spent our time shopping, collecting sea shells, lying on the North Padre beach, and cruising in Mom’s convertible. It was so

All of my SPJST friends from other districts constantly told me how cool my mom was for telling funny stories and hanging out with us. Spending the weekend hanging out with my mom was more fun than I expected, and this trip brought us closer together. I love you, Mom! Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard District Seven Queen —SPJST—

Designs selected for the floats will receive $50 Visa gift cards. Winners will be recognized in the Vestnik and invited to ride the float in a community parade. SPJST members of all ages can participate. Designs become the property of SPJST and will not be returned.
