SPJST Scholarship Applications Available September through January Applications and all required information must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2016.
One of the many benefits SPJST offers to its members is the Scholarship Program. This year, 51 General Scholarships and 11 Leadership Grants were awarded. In addition, at the 2015 State Youth Achievement Day, six District Merit Grants, one State Merit Award, and two Royalty Grants were awarded for a total of 71 scholarships and grants presented in 2015. Since the program’s inception, more than $1.5 million has been awarded. General and Technical Scholarships are funded through SPJST’s annual allocation, through voluntary contributions received from our 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and memorial donations received throughout the year. The number of scholarships given each year depends on how much we receive in donations and the annual allocation already in force. Donations are tax deductible. Applications for scholarships are sent out from September through January upon request. The Fraternal Department must receive the completed application and all required informa-

member those who are special in our daily lives. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this wonderful day of celebration. In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for grandparents. Through concerted efforts on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign expanded statewide. Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) was especially instrumental in the project. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Also in 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the United States Senate. The resolution languished in committee. Mrs. McQuade and her team turned to the media to garner support. They also began contacting governors, senators, and congressmen in every state. And they sent letters to churches, businesses, and numerous national organizations interested in senior citizens. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. (September was chosen for the holiday, to signify the “autumn years” of life.) Today this event, begun by only a few, is observed by millions throughout the United States.
2016 SPJST Calendar Please send in your district/lodge/youth club important dates for the 2016 SPJST calendar no later than October 1. These should be annual events (not monthly events). Mark your events on the enclosed sheet and mail to Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny.
Plan to Observe Czech Heritage Month October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas. That is something to consider if you are looking for an enjoyable theme for your October meeting. Here is an idea: How about hosting a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food? Many good, traditional and modern recipes can be found in the SPJST cookbooks.
In addition, regarding Czech Heritage Month, good times await those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 11. That is Heritage Day, and once again, SPJST lodges in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be represented by their members at the celebration, which takes place just inside the entrance to Fair Park. The SPJST Home Office will also help with this year’s Heritage Day, and we invite you to come out for a good time. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Starts October 1 Spread the word! October 1 starts the SPJST 100 Pennies Fund Drive which will benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, August 13, 2015, in the Sokol Club Room. Thank you to the ladies who came early and helped stretch the Sewing Circle’s Christmas quilt. The top was made by Lil Kosarek and was really pretty. Someone said it looked really refreshing with yellow tones. We had quilters all around - Ann, Pat, Martha, Victoria, Georgia, Dolores, Irene, Dorothy J., Dorothy Booth, Dorothy Prachyl, Geraldine Kubin, and Georgie Morales. I hope I didn’t miss anyone. We really enjoyed talking and visiting. Thank you to all quilters. At noon, President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed pizza, salad, tea, and chocolate and coconut pie. Thank you to Dorothy Bobalek for picking up the pizza. Everyone enjoyed it so much; some even said we should have this in December. I guess when you don’t have to prepare it or
pay for it, it always tastes better! We had some leftovers. I took some to Bessie Laznovsky as she came earlier that morning, but couldn’t stay as her rehab people were coming to her house. It was so good to see you, Bessie. We are glad you’re doing so good. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, a moment of silence was held for Dixie Webster and Joe Honza. The “Our Father” was recited for all our sick members. One of our longtime members Geraldine Zhanel fell and is now at Ennis Care Center. Let’s all remember her in our prayers. Secretary Dolores read the minutes of the last meeting, and Dorothy Bobalek gave her treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Ginny Svehlak thanked everyone for all her cards, calls, and prayers she received after her cataract surgery. Everyone was telling her there is nothing to it, and she now believes them. We are glad everything went well. She will have her other eye done in a couple of weeks. Ginny also read a funny article that we all enjoyed about an old man and his tractor. Sunshine Lady Ann announced August birthday celebrants - Joann Brown, Kay Lynn Kovar, Geraldine Valek, Dorothy J. Kudrna, and Frances Vinkler. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Kay Lynn, Dorothy J., and Geraldine. A get well card was signed for Geraldine Zhanel, a birthday card for Frances Vinkler, and a thank you card to Joe Kostak for all his help last month. the tic tac quilt; October - for Georgia Holy; and November - the Junior Sokol traveling fund quilt for next year. President Irene announced since we will tie quilt next month, it won’t take as long. She brought feathers, and we can make pastry brushes . . . remember, like our mothers used to use. We will also go back to working on our tee-shirt quilts. Some of us get busy doing other things. I know I did a lot of babysitting and some others were busy with yard work. Anyway, Irene wants us to get back to them. President Irene’s tip for the day was how to hold the ruler when cutting fabric with your cutter. That was good to know as mine slipped many times. Her question of the day was when quilting, how to quilt through several thicknesses. For show-and-tell, Ginny brought a beautiful bride doll that she had dressed for the KJZT August 15 celebration raffle at its hall. Congratulations to Pat Fowler who was our 50-50 dollar winner. President Irene thanked all for coming and quilting. The next meeting will be Thursday, September 10. We will tie quilt, make pastry brushes, have lunch and the meeting as usual, and play 50-50 dollar game in the Club Room. Last but not least, I want to send a big special thank you to my Sokol friend Jerry Wester. I was taking out the trash, he grabbed the trash bag from me and took it to the trash bin way in the back. That was so nice thanks again.

Her true love was her family and to take care of her family. She lived her life to the fullest. There’s a quote that says, “Live so that when the final summons comes you will leave something more behind you than an epitaph on a tombstone or an obituary in a newspaper,” that was Lorine Valenta. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton for 29 years. She is preceded in death by her parents; and siblings George Zurovetz, Dan Zurovetz, and Albina Zurovetz Naizer. She is survived by husband Frank Valenta; sons Don Valenta and wife Sherri of Troy, James Valenta of Houston, and Tom Valenta and wife Carla of Temple; grandsons Kristopher Valenta of Bastrop, Brian Valenta and wife Miranda Valenta of Lakeway, Blake Valenta and Adam Valenta of Temple, Scott Stewart and wife Alisa of Belton, and Brooke Stewart of Temple; three great-grandchildren; twin sister Bernice McGrody of California; and brother August “Boots” Zurovetz and wife Roseanne of El Paso. A funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 13 at Saint Luke’s Catholic Church. Visitation was held Wednesday, August 12 from 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary being said at 7:30 p.m. at Scanio Harper Funeral Home. To share a memory or to sign

State Youth Director shares September updates
Dear Youth Leaders, What an exciting time we had this summer! I had a great time being at all district camps and enjoyed the fun activities at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. I really enjoy watching the youth interact with one
another and how it helps them to come out of their comfort zone. I saw this happen with many new campers and experienced ones, too. You inspire them to be more confident in themselves, lead by example in teaching them to build lifelong friendships, and provide lasting memories from our SPJST camp. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped with State Youth Achievement Day on August 1 at the Mayborn Center in Temple. Your as-

Grandparents Day September 13 is Grandparents Day. We all know that we live in a fast paced world, but if we would slow down and take the time to visit with our grandparents we would learn so much from them. Marian McQuade of Fayette County, West Virginia, is the founder of Grandparents Day. Her aspiration was that such an observance might persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage of their grandparents. The first presidential
proclamation was issued in 1978, with one issued each year since, designating the first Sunday after Labor Day as national Grandparents Day. All youth club members are encouraged to honor their grandparents and the grandparents in their lodges during the month of September.
Observe Czech Heritage Month in October All youth clubs are encouraged to observe - and celebrate - Czech Heritage Month in Texas at their October meeting. Something you may want to discuss at your September youth club meeting . . . During the 74th Legislature Session 1995, House Resolution 83 and Senate Resolution 1023 were passed designating the last full week in October beginning in 1995 as Czech Heritage Week in Texas.

Labor Day: Celebrating Summer’s End and Paying Triibute to the American Worker Labor Day, the first Monday in September is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It represents a national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. In 1884, the Central Labor Union -- a worker ’s rights organization -designated the first Monday in September as a holiday and urged similar organizations in other cities to follow their example. The idea caught on and soon Labor Day was being observed in many cities. Oregon was the first state to make the holiday an offfical statewide obs b ervance. The h n came Col C lorado, d Massachus h etts, New Jersey, andd New York. By 1894, 30 states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers. On June 28 of that year, Congress offficially designated the first Monday in September of each year a national legal holiday. What Does Labor Day Mean to You? Nowadays, Labor Day is seen by many as a way to mark the end off summer -- one last chance to barbecue or party before school starts andd the routine of fall settles in. Doug Scott, writing in the August 29, 20144 edition of the online newsletter, Redeem Your Ground, offfers a perspective that gets back to where the idea originated, “This Labor Day weekend -- in the midst of all the picnics, football games, barbeques, and end-of-summer-pool-parties, let me challenge you to consider and appreciate those men and women who worked so hard to afford us the blessed lives we lead today.”
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Sta S tistics, the US workforce is comprised of more than 140 million workers!
And a Littlle Someth hing for f Parents . . . He continues, “And if you’re a parent, let me challenge you further to try to think of ways you could help your kidds get their hands dirty and work hard towards something so that they too might be able to appreciate Labor Day now and in the future. IIf you do, I’d venture to say that you’ll be making it more likely that th hey will be more productive, more responsible, and more engaged in whatever lives they lead once they are on their own. And as a parent, thhere are few things that are better than that.”
Now, It’s Your Turn! In the space below -- or on the back if you need more space -explain what Labor Day means to you! What do you believe would be a good way to observe Labor Day in your community? __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________

Cammi and Brandon Teplicek joined hands with Runnels County Historical Commission and helped restore several historical markers in Runnels County during their summer break thus making a difference for history buffs. They also learned about some of the history of Runnels County. It was a fun learning experience. Brandon and Cammi are members of SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena and the children of Brad and Pam Teplicek.
These floats represent and promote SPJST in parades across Texas throughout the year. Submit your original drawing/design by October 1. The design may be hand drawn or computer-generated. Designs selected for the floats will receive $50 Visa gift cards.

Mike Spiller CD Please know the Mike Spiller Games of the World CDs were picked up by the District Youth Counselors to be distributed earlier in the summer. Please let me know if you still need a copy, and I can see about getting one sent to you. Here are some fun games from the CD that you may want to try at your next youth club meeting.
Laugh Experts / Energizer Fun Call for volunteers to see who can produce the greatest variety of laughter. Award points to the one whose laugh is the most unusual, the one whose laugh is the loudest, and the one who brings out the biggest laugh from the audience. From the group, you might name the night’s most laughable person.
Magazine Hunt/Group Cooperative Divide your group into teams of two or three persons each and give each group a combination of old magazines. Then give them a list of various items, such as photos, names, products, etc., that could be found in the magazines. As soon as a group finds one of the items, they cut it out and continue to collect as many as they can in the time limit. You can make the list as long and as difficult as possible.
Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Shares Summer Activities
Dear Vestnik Readers, I have been super busy this summer, and I cannot wait to tell you all about it. I have been doing everything from cheerleading to going to Corpus Christi for the SPJST summer getaway. I’ll begin explaining my summer adventure by telling you about some SPJST activities I have participated in. First was LIT camp. I met so many friends, enriched old friendships, learned so much, and I had so much fun. After LIT camp, I had district Youth Achievement Day where I won first in merit points, science and education, needlework, individual talent, and group talent. Soon after was
State YAD where I won second in group talent, individual talent, and science and education, and third in special category. Aside from SPJST activities, I have been doing quite a bit of cheer this summer because I am cheer captain. At cheer camp, my team got many awards. We worked hard, became closer to one another, and improved so much. I’m so thankful that I am cheer captain for such a wonderful team. To draw my epic summer to a close, my family went to the SPJST Summer Getaway in Corpus Christi, and we had such a good time. I loved being with my fraternal family, helping build the winning
sand sculpture, and swimming in the ocean. Also, while we were at Corpus, I visited Texas A&M Corpus Christi. My trip to Corpus was definitely one to remember. As you can conclude, my summer has been great. I’m so excited to start my sophomore year and see what this year has in store for me. Fraternally yours, April Dvorak —SPJST—

People to People/Mixer Activity The group divides into pairs. Different commands involving different parts of the body are called. “Right hand to left ear” means both players have to touch the left ear of the other player with their right hand. “Right ankle to left shoulder” means both player’s right ankles touch each other’s left shoulders. If the command “People to People” is called, it means that players have to change partners as quickly as possible. The kids should be encouraged to come up with new commands. Protect Da Tub It’s two . . . two . . . two sports in one! Form two teams. Give team 1
newspaper baton bats and give team 2 a large supply of newspaper wads. Put a washtub on the floor. Measure a sixfoot radius from the tub’s edge, and make a circle around the tub with masking tape. Have members of team 1 lie on their backs with their heads toward the tub and their feet toward the tape. Have members of team 2 sit cross-legged around the outside of the tape. When you blow the whistle, kids on team 2 should try to throw the newspaper wads into the tub while kids on team 1 guard the tub with their newspaper bats. After 30 seconds, blow the whistle and count the wads in the tub. Then switch teams. For extra fun, try more teams, and have a tournament!
Face to Face Elastic Race Have two equal teams face each other in a line. Place four elastic bands on the floor by the leader. On “Go,” the leader steps into one band, pulls it overhead, and passes it to the next player. Pass all the bands down the line. This can be played with three teams in the formation of a triangle – all facing in. Fraternally, Lynette Talasek State Youth Director —SPJST—
