Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition exhibit in Temple

The multi-media exhibit Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition just finished a highly successful three-month showing at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio. The Family Day produced in conjunction was attended by more than 600 people and featured members of the Central Texas Accordion Association, food and language activities, and the opportunity for children and adults to try on and be photographed in kroj pieces brought by Sharon Mena.

The exhibit is now on display at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center (CHMGC) in Temple through January 9, 2016. It was produced by the nonprofit organization PolkaWorks and co-curated by Texas Czechs Lori Najvar and SPJST member Dawn Orsak of Lodge 187, Round Rock. very special thanks to those who continue to check on me and ask about my healing progress. It’s been more than nine months since the accident. The prayers, concern, and caring thoughts have given me strength to get well. Some days are almost normal - the new normal, that is, as I don’t know if my life will ever be the same. And, some days I still feel like I was hit by a bus - or, I guess, a truck towing a cargo trailer. It has been a challenging year. Last week, David and I experienced a complete role reversal. He had knee surgery for an injury that just wouldn’t go away since the accident. So I was the one taking care of him and doing everything for him - just like he did for me for several months after the accident. Big kudos to all caregivers out there! Not an easy task. Earlier in the year while I was recovering at home, Communication Specialist Katherine Morris added my photo to my office chair (see above). I hadn’t removed the picture yet just in case I had to be out again. Well, it’s coming down now because I’m so ready for life to be normal again! Having said that, the challenges that David and I face and our quest for a “normal” life once again . . . that’s so simple compared to what many others deal with. It still amazes me that one split second is all it takes to totally change your life. But, it is the reality. We must appreciate not only each day that is given to us - but each moment. Live the moment and cherish the day—and I always re-

member someone else is struggling way more than I am who needs my thoughts and prayers. My life could be much worse. This too shall pass.

Lodge 133 San Antonio member shares Czech update

Dear Sister Melanie, I am still teaching English in firms, schools, and private lesson here in South Moravia. My teaching in companies like Agrotec and Moss Logistics is with adults who need English in their daily work as dispatchers. I use the Vestnik in my classes for reading and learning about the Texas Czechs. Well, one of my students, Dagmar Micakova, told me about being in Austin, Texas, to visit some relatives and their names are Vicky Cooper and Patrica Hale. They are related through a great-grandfather Zabcik of Zabcikville, Texas. Dagmar brought photos of when she visited Texas some years back. A small world that we live in. I have had this happen many times being here in the Czech Republic. One time at our annual Sokol picnic we had guests from other Sokol groups, and they were relatives of the Milan family of Fort Worth. It was a good time for us to speak about Texas and the Milan family. My cousins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, were visiting with some guests at The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, and they mentioned my name . . . one of the guests is one of my former student and told them that was why his English was as good as it is. Our babí léto is not as warm as it should be. The forecast was a warmer fall, but so far it hasn’t been what they promised. My best regards to all in Texas! Nazdar, John A. District Five Plans October 16-17 Event at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm

Dear District Five Members/Guests, We have booked SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm for a fun event on Saturday, October 17 through Sunday October 18, 2015. We are to meet at the ENC on Saturday, October 17 at 10:30 a.m. for check-in. We have several things planned for the day and evening as well as the following day. We are asking that you please let us know if you and your family plan to attend so we can purchase the food and advise ENC Director John Hoelscher of how many cabins may be needed. This is open to any member of District Five. You are not required to stay the night; however, it is available if you choose. Remember that if you stay the night, you will need to bring all of your bedding, sleep clothes, etc. just as you do for camp, and no open toe shoes are al-

lowed at the ENC. Remember that we need a head count whether you are attending or not. Please don’t assume that we will know one way or the other if you do not respond. You may email DYC Barbara Linney-Gonzales at district5dyc@aol.com or Assistant DYC Michelle Wockenfuss at michellesfarm@aol.com to RSVP. It is imperative that you RSVP. The address to the ENC is 2001 Waldeck Road in Ledbetter. More information is on page 25. I hope to see many of you there and look forward to new faces as well! Lodge 47, Seaton hosts successful Outdoor Extravaganza

Dear Members and Friends, The officers and members of Lodge 47, Seaton would like to thank each of you who participated in our annual Outdoor Extravaganza fundraiser which was held on September 19, 2015. We appreciate your support in making this event once again a success. Everyone had a great time visiting with friends, enjoying the delicious steaks and trimmings, snacks, refreshments, and just hoping their number was called to win that one special item they so much wanted. A special thank you goes to Committee Chairmen David Pechal and Brandon Bartek for all they did in organizing this event, spending countless hours and miles a running. Thank you to cooks Edwin Pechal, James Skrabanek, and their crew for the delicious steak, potatoes, beans, and Kitchen Chair Lady Joyce Skrabanek and her crew for preparing, setting out food, and the final touch of the evening - cleaning the kitchen. There are so many who helped tremendously in so many ways . . . selling tickets, getting donations, setting up the hall, bringing desserts, serving food, cleaning the kitchen, and helping wherever needed. Thank you! Thank you! We thank our many members, friends, and businesses who participated in donating items, purchasing tickets, and bringing and bidding on silent auction items. Thank you for your support of Lodge 47. Top prize winners were Dorothy Mikeska - quail hunt; Bill Machalek travel voucher; Donald Thomas - fishing trip; Doris Marek - Port O’Connor trip; Craig Schneider - Fredericksburg Bed and Breakfast; and Tri Co Propane - Wildflower Golf package. Congratulations to each of you! The live auction had 23 neat items,

ranging from a pheasant hunt, coolers, bikes, homemade kvasaky pickles, and many more items. High bidders for the two most favorite items which brought $65 each were bought by Heath Novosad and Nathan Wilde. They decided it might be cheaper not to have to travel outside the Temple area and just bid on the famous Blue Bell Ice Cream. The silent auction had many items for the ladies, men, and youth. A drawing was held for all who participated in the silent auction. The grand prize winner of the Yeti cooler was Brett Marek. The card game drawing winners were Ginger Ringwald and Sherry Mitchell. Bucket prize drawing winners were Edwin Pechal - winner of a swing set and Jay Ray - winner of a shot gun. The gun safe was won by Mike Boley. There were many other drawings which winners became the proud owners of rifles and gift certificates for a massage, James Avery jewelry, Wings ‘n Things, Ulta, and several more. We were excited to see several new businesses sponsor advertisement signs along with the renewals of the past years. Proceeds from these signs help in purchasing items to go in the bucket drawings along with other prizes given. Signs are made, and their business is advertised as a donor of the prizes. We appreciate your support, and please know that your business is noticed by the attendees. With SPJST being a fraternal organization, and the Extravaganza being a night of family fun, it would not have been complete without having our youth involved. Sheriff Eddy

Lange did an awesome job in getting all the kids involved with a couple of games. One being “heads and tails.” The two lucky winners in outlasting the others in the call of the coin were Jackson Erskine and Logan Evans who each received $20. Then came the most popular of all . . . the turkey call. There were some pretty good calls. With those calls, I guarantee you, there had to have been turkeys all over East Bell County. Winners in the “best call” were Ella Washam and John David Smith. They also won a $20 bill. Five prizes were drawn for the youth. Winners were: first place – youth gun won by Angelina Ringwald; second - tent won by Seth Ray; third BB gun won by Kaden Lehrmann; fourth - sleeping bag won by Logan Beck; and fifth - fishing pole won by Katelyn Erskine. Congratulations, youth! It was great to see so many youth! We would love to have you as members of our SPJST Youth Program. Meetings are held the first Sunday of each month at 1 p.m. Come out and see how to be a part of trips, camp, scholarships, and so much more. Congratulations to others who won the many prizes which were given away. We appreciate Sheriff Eddy Lange for all the announcing and making the crowd feel welcome. It is always fun when the one announcing is out there in the crowd, and you can tell he is enjoying himself. Thank you, Eddy! Once again, thank you to all who participated in our annual fundraiser. It was a great evening. It was fun to see so many people enjoying, visiting, and making new friends. We look forward to next year. Please mark your

Thank you, thank you to all of you who had a part in our fundraiser. The proceeds will go towards the SPJST Youth Scholarship Fund and to help our lodge with the maintenance and upkeep of Star Hall. Lodge 191, Lufkin to host Oct. 16 Halloween dance

Happy “fall” everyone. Here it is already October, and this year will be over before you know it. Linda Kaye and the Kool Katz outdid themselves for the September dance. The crowd keeps getting bigger and better. Thanks to all of you that are supporting the lodge with your presence at the dances. It is always more fun to have a lot of people at dances, and the band seems to play better with a big crowd. The winner of the 50-50 drawing, which was $110, this month was Jimmy Kendrick, and the winners of free dance tickets for any dance but New Year’s are Leroy Watson and Carolyn Hayden. Congratulations to these winners! The theme for the dance was “Come Join the Circus.” There were several people who dressed up for the occasion, and everyone seemed to have a good time. Thanks to Ruth Welch for the decorations, and thanks for all of the cooks that brought food. Pictures for each dance are posted on the SPJST Facebook page. Go to SPJST Lodge 191 to see these pictures.

Next Dance—October 16 The next dance, which will be October 16, will feature our very own Glenn Lenderman. The theme will be “Halloween Scares and Thrills.” So if you have any kind of Halloween costume, wear it. If not, just come as you are. A prize will be given to the best costume, so find something to wear and come dance the night away. If you would like to host a dance or decorate for the next dance, please call Ruth Welch at 936-639-6971, and she will be glad to tell you all about it. State Youth Director shares October updates

October is here, and that means it is Czech Heritage Month and Eat Better, Eat Together Month. Here is your opportunity to learn more about the Czech culture and heritage. Czech people are all about family, and that includes your SPJST family! Thanks to those SPJST lodges that have been hosting Czech heritage celebrations in the weeks leading up to this special month and to those who have events planned for Czech Heritage Month. Many of these events consist of a fabulous Czech meal that is enjoyed by all. This is a great opportunity to stress the importance of planning a meal

with your family on a regular basis, whether that be SPJST family or your immediate family. SPJST will have a booth at the State Fair in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday, October 11, 2015, starting at 10 a.m. This coincides with Heritage Festival 2015 and is sponsored by Texas Cultural Partnership. Our booth will be located at the African American Museum just inside Gate Five located off of R. B. Cullum Boulevard. There will be beseda dancers, music, food, and lots of fun. Please come to the State Fair and join our SPJST State Royalty Court. If you can’t make it to the State Fair, there are other Czech events and museums around the state you can visit. Please see the Vestnik for more information on these events. The 2015-2016 State Royalty Court made their first public appearance at

Westfest in West, Texas, on Labor Day weekend. Westfest is a celebration of Czech heritage and culture held annually in the Central Texas town of West. Royalty Court members rode in the parade and also made an appearance at the Cultural Amphitheater. District Two Beseda Dancers did a great job dancing again this year at Westfest. Thanks to Districts Two and Three members who rode on the SPJST Floats in the Westfest parade. The very next weekend, the State Royalty Court had an opportunity to judge at the Caldwell Kolache Festival. District One Royalty and State Royalty Courts were introduced to the crowd followed by a performance from Lodge 9, Snook and Lodge 17, New Tabor Beseda Dancers. State Royalty Court had an extra special treat when we were invited to lunch with former Prague Mayor Tomas Hudecek.

October Youth Meetings The October Vestnik Project will be an introduction to Krtek; The Mole. Krtek is a Czech cartoon. Consider Youtubing the cartoon to share with your youth club and then compare Krtek; The Mole to American cartoon characters. A coloring page will be included in the packets for those who wish to add some color to Krtek. Small elements like the one suggested here could help add a creative twist into your regular youth meetings while still respecting the time of your youth and their parents. We Eat Better When W We e Eat T To ogether According to a recent Washington Post article, “Regular family meals are linked with increased consumption of fruit and vegetables, two foood groups where most Americans fall short.” The article goes on to state that the benefits of family meals go far beyond nutrition. In 2004, researchers at the University of Minnesota reported that teens who ate seven or more meals with their families each week generally had highher grades, and were less likely to feel depressed, drink alcohol, smoke or use drugs than those who ate less than twice a week with their families. Statistics show that regular family meals may lead to other healthy habits. In 1996 Washington State University (WSU) launched a campaign called “Eat Better, Eat Together”. This was considered one of the h nation’s pioneering efforts in promoting family meals. Since that time, WSU and the Washington State Dairy Council have partnered in an ongoing effort to encourage families to eat meals together more often. n

Studies show that when families eat together they eat more nutritiously and a greater variety of foods. Families report better communication and comment that they tend to excel physically, socially, and emotionally. Many families also enjoy celebrations and bond around family meals. Meals provide the opportunity for socializing and exchaanging ideas. Does that sound familiar? Many SPJST lodge meetings and social events include meals and refreshments as a way to complementt the program.

October V Ve estnik Project October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas and has been since the 76th Texas Legislature designated it as such in 1999. District Two: Memories of 2014-2015 youth year

Many of you are probably wondering why this letter is being written for activities over a year ago. With our youth year being June 1 and ending May 31 of the following year, I like to look back at what we have accomplished and the fun we have had within the youth year. This September, an SPJST Youth Spectacular was not published. A fantastic SPJST Summer Spectacular was published which included activities including youth and adults. Thank you, Editor Melanie, for including all the pictures and the many

activities throughout the state including the activities SPJST so graciously provides for all its members. After countless “should I” or “shouldn’t I” send in this article I had prepared for the Vestnik, I decided to go ahead and send it in. I hope it will bring back memories of the fun we have spent together as District Two youth. District Two youth members had a wonderful and exciting time since the last SPJST Youth Spectacular was published in 2014. It has been a year of many fun-filled activities, new friendships, and lasting memories. We thank SPJST for giving us these opportunities. I thank leaders for their countless hours in preparation and planning. Parents, thank you for your support and getting the youth to meetings, practices, and activities. We hope

everyone has had as much fun as we had this past year. The biggest thanks goes to the wonderful youth of District Two. You are all a great group of youth, and I am so very proud of each of you. I thank you for your love and the many memories I will cherish my entire lifetime.

August 2014 State YAD . . . A very exciting day once again for our many District Two youth who earned the honor to participate with friends from the six other districts from across the state of Texas. Many of our youth earned first place in crafts, talent, and special category. Three groups of beseda dancers represented District Two. We were very proud of our royalty court - King Jacob Horak, Queen Kacie Vanecek,

Duke Cody Voigt, and Duchess Makayla Newsom. What an honor to have Queen Kacie of Lodge 48, Beyersville as first runner-up State Queen along with her Duchess Makayla. Our royalty court appeared in the Temple Christmas parade as well as the Fourth of July parade in Belton. And, of course, to end out the great summer of 2014, many District Two youth and their families attended the Corpus Christi Get Away. Their talent continued on with the awesome designs of sand sculptures. Three groups of our District Two Beseda Dancers closed out the month of August performing at Westfest for the Labor Day celebration. What a great time we always have at Westfest!

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Shares October Meeting Scenes

Dear Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis met Sunday, September 27, 2015, in the lodge dining room. Under old business, everyone shared how busy their summer was with LIT camp, both YADs, SPJST Camp, Corpus Christi Get Away and Westfest, Six Flags and how much fun they had this summer. Now it’s hard to believe that they are back in school. Ennis’ homecoming was this past

weekend, and I am proud to announce that Paige won EHS 2015 Homecoming Queen! We are all so happy and excited for her. Paige shared with the members about her experience and encouraged everyone to work hard in school this year. Under new business, October events were announced, and everyone is encouraged to attend the Heritage Day at the State Fair on October 11,

We will also begin collecting

items for a spring garage sale. Birthdays were announced, and the dollar door prizes were given away. After the meeting, everyone made Christmas cards for the nursing home and snacks were enjoyed by all. See you next month! Fraternally yours, Rita Holland Youth Leader —SPJST—

September 2014 The annual District Two Fall Meeting held at Lodge 18, Elgin was very well-attended by our youth. Members were very generous in supporting our annual youth silent auction with funds to go to SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm. Many youth and adults participated in the Christmas ornament contest. The cake walk, spinning wheel, soda toss, and several other games were enjoyed. The fall meeting always seems like a great place to pick up on free grocery items. October 2014 The first two weekends of October were fun-filled days, especially for our beseda dancers. The first weekend, all youth members were invited to attend a day at Austin Park ‘n Pizza as our fall activity. It was a super day with activities for all ages. The pizza was delicious, indoor games for all, and rides for all were a lot of fun. The go-carts were on the track constantly with District Two youth. The following Saturday, beseda performers and their families were on the road again, in the same direction, to be treated to a day of fun for all their time and hard work with beseda. We started the day off at Jump Street in Round Rock. What a fun, fun place to visit. The dancers

(and some adults, too) enjoyed jumping and jumping and jumping. Would you believe after hours of jumping, some still wanted to stay and jump more. Man, was I ever tired from watching all that jumping. By the time we pulled into the parking lot of Gattiland, jumping was forgotten, and pizza was on all our minds. Were we ever hungry? We were welcomed with delicious pizza and coins. We had a fantastic outing . . . thanks to the many supporters of our beseda fundraiser.

November 2014 A lock-in was planned for November which was rescheduled due to a chance of icy roads. So much disappointment, but we wanted everyone safe. Of course, the ice never came. The slow time then began for our youth program. It was a time to sit back, relax, and reminisce about the wonderful summer and all the memories. I really did miss seeing my SPJST family which had been an almost weekly adventure.

December 2014 Well that lock-in that got rescheduled back in November due to the possible ice was rescheduled once again. This time, due to area football playoffs. Many of our favorite teams were in playoffs the weekend before Christmas. Have no fear: 2015 we will have a lock-in! (Save the date—November 13, 2015!) Many youth clubs presented Christmas programs at their home lodges. The beseda dancers and other youth members rode on the beautiful SPJST Float in the Temple Christmas Parade. Our District Queen Two Queen Kacie Vanecek and King Jacob Horak rode in a beautiful Corvette as did Duke Cody Voigt and Duchess Makayla Newsom. District Two was very wellrepresented in the parade. When asking the Royalty Court of their most exciting part of their reign—“riding in Melanie and David’s Corvettes” is always the answer. Melanie and David, your generosity of sharing the Corvettes gives our royalty an added spotlight during their reign. And to those of us who are so honored to drive our royalty court, we feel just as honored. Just ask Director Pospisil or myself. Riding on the floats in the parade is such an honor for our youth also. Everyone loves the fun themes, the beauty, and almost always winning first place. The time put into each float is remarkable. Thank you again, Melanie and David!

Following the Temple Christmas parade, members joined many others at the SPJST Home Office for fun and food. Activities included face painting and also having the choice of a balloon made especially for you in your favorite shape. What a way to represent SPJST! Thank you, thank you! Not only for District Two, but for the entire SPJST Family statewide, we all turned to our Heavenly Father to take care of and heal our beloved Melanie and David, who were seriously injured in a car accident on December 14. After months and months of healing, and Melanie still on the road to recovery, we are thankful and blessed to have them both with us.

January 2015 This was another rather slow month for the youth and leaders. What a way to start off 2015, giving the parents a break to get over the holidays or so it seemed. January ended with the state incentive banquet. Several District Two youth clubs received awards for new members and participation awards. Way to go, District Two Youth! How proud we are of you! Beseda got back to routine practices with several new dancers.

February 2015 What a fun Valentine’s Day, not only for youth, but parents, also. It was back to our annual District Two Valentine Skating Party. Many parents dropped their youth off and went to enjoy a couple of hours off with their “sweetheart.” We all enjoyed skating, pizza, drinks, and door prizes. Sadness filled our District Two youth and families when we lost one of our own—Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club member, Leader-in-Training, and friend Garret Sumner. Our hearts and prayers continue for his parents,Angela and Ed, and sisters Emily and Bailey.

March 2015 Youth clubs elected officers for the 2015-2016 youth year. Officers began their elected positions at the June 2015 meeting. The annual District Two Spring Meeting was held at Lodge 29, Taylor. New this year for the youth spring meeting activity was designing a Christmas card which was later to be chosen statewide as an SPJST state Christmas card. There was great participation with some very beautiful designs. District Two Flag Bearers chosen are Trent Wuensche of Lodge

48, Beyersville and Journie Gaines of Lodge 20, Granger. I was honored to be chosen as the District Two Youth Counselor along with my assistants Cristy Girod of Lodge 29, Taylor and Amber Bartek of Lodge 47, Seaton. Youth leaders from across the state met in Temple for the weekend to share ideas and suggestions to help our youth program to grow and prosper. We had a great time and a lot of ideas were shared. The following weekend, the District Two Youth Club Workshop was held at the Home Office. Beseda dancers started the day with practice. We had a fantastic day with officers participating in a mock meeting of their elected positions and also future officers taking a role of different offices. There was a lot of candy flying across the room for those who answered “officer” questions correctly. Some members spoke into a microphone for the first time. Groups were rotated with State Youth Director Lynette Talasek leading ice breakers along with team building. An Easter egg hunt was held, and pizza was enjoyed by all.

April 2015 Our annual beseda fundraiser was very successful. Thanks so much to all who participated, donated items, and helped to make the day a success. A special thank you to Lodge 47, Seaton who donated the use of the hall for this event. District Two youth leaders and assistants met for our annual training and informational meeting. There was a lot of planning, sharing ideas, suggestions, setting dates for District Two activities, and definitely visiting. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful group of leaders to work with. What great bonding. Secret Sisters for the previous year were revealed. May 2015 Beseda dancers performed at the Shiloh Inn in Killeen for the Retired Federal Government Employees. These dancers could not have been prouder when they received a standing ovation. They performed again the next day at the SPJST Car Show which was held at Lodge 47, Seaton, and it was great. We all enjoyed walking around and looking at the cool cars. There were also several youth members who participated in the kolache eating contest. Congratulations, winners and also to those who tried. You were great! Most youth clubs in District Two participated in Join Hands Day help-

ing others. Some gave to food pantries, cleaned cemeteries, had bake sales with proceeds going to the needy, worked at a community barbecue fundraiser, or helped at the local animal shelters. Thank you for showing your true fraternalism.

The final two months of our 20142015 youth year were close to an end. However, we all knew they would be the busiest months and most exciting months of the year.

June 2015 District Two Beseda Dancers performed at the Lodge 47, Seaton annual picnic. Dancers and spectators enjoyed this performance under the nice, new, shaded pavilion. Each dancer showed pride in their Czech heritage. I am so proud of all of you! The Leaders-in-Training (LIT) Workshop held at Cooper Farm was awesome. We had 25 teenagers attending from our district. I am so proud of these teenagers’ involvement and enthusiasm throughout the entire weekend. Plans by the LITs were in the works for camp. Approximately 75 youth, friends, and parents enjoyed an evening of swimming at Temple’s Walker Pool for our annual district swim party. It was that time of the year when we get together not only for a fun social, but also to turn in YAD cards. Wow! I knew after that night we would be busy, busy getting ready for District Two Youth Achievement Day . . . only 20 days later.

July 2015 A very, very exciting month with Youth Achievement Day and summer camp! As you can see, District Two never slows down for long. The above is a part of what we do in the SPJST Youth Program with even more activities held within the local lodge. We are proud of our youth and want them to stay involved. Again, thank you to each member of District Two for your love and dedication to our youth program. I am very proud to say I am a part of this wonderful program, and I thank you for giving me the privilege. Please encourage your friends to join in on the fun! Thank you, SPJST for giving us a lifetime of memories. Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

In Texas, small communities settled by Czech immigrants were named for villages they had left in their Czech homeland.

Nearly 100 settlements in Texas have had Czech names. Some of these settlements were and are especially important because of the early date they were established or because they were the site of an historic church, school, lodge hall, printing press, or other building or institution. Name three Texas settlements with Czech names.
