eterans Day is Wednesday, November 11, and Texas is home to 1.68 million military veterans, based on September 2014 statistics from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. Of those, 1.31 million are wartime vets. We salute the American veterans and active-duty military whose courage and dedication have protected our freedom and our way of life for generations. We recognize their service and their sacrifice, their selflessness and bravery, their hard work, and their faith. Please join us in celebrating the men and women of our military, past and present, this Veterans Day. Proudly fly your flag, thank a veteran, and show your support for those who continue to serve today.

Lodge 133, San Antonio member shares life in Czech Republic
Dear Sister Melanie, Our weather is in “Babi Leto” like “Indian Summer.” We are have many foggy days with some cold nights but no real killing frost yet. I visited a school in northern Moravia and happened to have a copy of the Vestnik. They were very excited to see it, and I naturally left it with them. I will see that they get more as one friend will come visit me so I will give him enough for their class. The fall leaves didn’t have as good of color this year due to the very dry summer. They are saying that the soil is very dry and can be a problem for next year unless we have rains or a lot of snow. I would rather have the rain . . . I had enough snow when I lived in Iowa. Do give my best regards to all and to all a happy Thanksgiving! Fraternally, Brother John Kuba Podivin, Czech Republic —SPJST—

Dear Youth Members, District Two will host a lock-in this Friday, November 13, 2015, at 7 p.m. to Saturday, November 14 at 7 a.m. The big all-night party will be held in Temple at Wilson Park and Recreation Center located at 2205 Curtis B. Elliott Drive. The entire gym has been reserved for SPJST youth and their friends. We welcome all SPJST members from all around Texas to come and join us. Members, bring a friend or two. We want this to be the best District Two Lock-In ever! We need to make up for the 2014 lock-in which was cancelled a couple of times due to the December weather and football play-offs. Can’t come and stay all night? Join us for the time convenient. Just let me know in advance of when you will arrive or when you need to leave. Parents, if you’d like to stay the entire time, we’d love to have you. We will ask you to take advantage of the quiet room and get some rest for your drive home the next morning.
Games, Food, Friends, Fun We will begin get acquainted challenges around 7:30 p.m. followed by snacks of all kinds, including hot dogs. Snacks and drinks will be provided for the entire evening by the district. We ask that no food or drinks be brought in. For youth to be able to enjoy spending time with one another and having a great time, we ask that no cell phones or electronic devices be brought. Games, movies, crafts, along
with different tournaments, such as bunco, basketball, volleyball, and much more will be held throughout the night. And, of course, we will have hourly door prizes for those who stay awake. There will be activities for all ages.
A Memorable Night It’s been almost four months since we have all been together at camp. Let’s make this another memorable night. Who knows what else might be in store for the night? You don’t want to miss out. If you have any other suggestions for the evening, please let me know, and we’ll see if we can make it happen. We are looking forward to participation from all youth members and friends! We hope to see you on November 13 with a lot of energy for a fun night! District Five Visits SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18, 2015 • SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm • Ledbetter, Texas
Dear Members, District Five went to SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) on October 17 and 18, 2015, for a fun day and overnight trip. When we arrived, we played outside games, enjoyed hot dogs with the trimmings for lunch, assisted with changing shower curtains in the cabins, enjoyed the high ropes,
and played football. It was nice just being outside in the fresh, cool air and enjoying the beautiful camp that we have. I really enjoyed not having the heat that we have during the summer. That evening, we watched movies and enjoyed dinner as well. The next morning we had pancakes and bacon for breakfast along with cereal. The
weather was absolutely beautiful. We plan on going back in the spring time as well. The kids that were able to attend really had a great time, and I hope that in the spring, we will have more in attendance. Remember that the ENC is a great place to have family reunions, picnics, lock-ins, etc. It doesn’t have to be just during the sum-
mer either. Give SPJST ENC Executive Director John Hoelscher a call 979-325-9831 to reserve the ENC for your next event. Fraternally, Michelle Wockenfuss Assistant District Five Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Dear Members, On Saturday, October 24, 2015, I got to participate in two Make a Difference programs. First I went to Willis, Texas, and participated in the drive-through food bank handing out food to the needy. We collected information from everyone like their name, phone number, how many in their family, etc. Then we gave them a
sticker to show how many families were being represented in their car. They drove through the line where their cars were loaded with canned goods, potatoes, cabbage, water, etc. Even though it was raining, I still had fun and enjoyed helping the people. In the afternoon, I went to Friends for Life animal shelter. We brought pet food, paper towels, laundry soap, and
hand soap. I played with the cats and really tried to get my mom to let me take one home. She was a Persian, and her name was Esmeralda. I really loved her, and she loved me, too. Fraternally, Keith Wockenfuss President —SPJST—

Legend, symbol, traditional ornaments available in TCGS Gift Shop By Nancy Machu SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor
The ornaments that are being presented in this article relate to wonderful Czech traditions. Relating these traditions to your family while enjoying a delicious bowl of soup could be just the spark that would spur your children and grandchildren to open a conversation about your own family’s customs and tradition. This may be a way to instill interest in family genealogy and ancestors, and it may be an effective way of presenting information about our ancestors that we yearn for our families to enjoy and love as much as we do.
The Tradition of the Garlic Ornament At the traditional Czech Christmas Eve dinner, soup is always served, garlic soup being the choice of many. Believed to provide strength and protection, this herb has been important to mankind for numerous years. Many emigrants from the Fatherland brought the idea that garlic, attached to a string and hung around the neck, would prevent certain diseases. If perhaps another soup was served instead of garlic soup for Christmas Eve dinner, a bowl of garlic would be placed under the Christmas Eve dinner table to provide year-long strength and protection. Still others hold to the tradition of placing a garlic ornament on their tree

to serve as a reminder that the Christmas season offers many opportunities to add flavor and lively friendships to their lives throughout the coming year. If you would like to use garlic soup as a way to promote interest in family traditions, you may wish to use the recipe below. This recipe has been used for more than 30 years as a part of Leroy and Charlene Hurta’s Christmas Eve dinner. According to Charlene, the menu changes almost yearly, but the beginning of the dinner has always, by request, stayed consistent. Cream of Garlic Soup 8 servings
1 stick butter 1 1/2 pound smoked ham steak, cut into 1-inch pieces 12 large cloves garlic 3 leeks (white parts only), coarsely chopped 1 large potato, peeled and cut into eighths 8 cups chicken stock 3 cups heavy whipping cream Freshly ground pepper to taste Chives, finely chopped, for garnish
Melt butter in a heavy, large saucepan over medium heat. Add ham (including the small bone), garlic, leeks, and potato. Cook 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add stock and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove soup from burner and let cool. Remove ham bone and puree mixture in a food processor or blender in batches until each has a cream-like consistency. Return to saucepan; add heavy whipping cream and heat over medium heat until heated through. Stir frequently, but do not bring to a boil, as that would cause it to separate. Season with pepper. (Charlene has never found that additional salt was needed, but others’ taste buds may differ). Ladle soup into bowls and garnish with chives, if desired.

Note: Because leeks are full of sand, be sure to wash them thoroughly.
If you are interested in a cute garlic bulb ornament for your Christmas tree, to give as a gift, or to attach to a container of Homemade Cream of Garlic Soup for gift-giving, come by the TCGS Gift Shop where you may purchase one for $6 each. The TCGS Gift Shop is located downstairs at the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas.
The Tradition of the Mushroom Ornament Mushrooms give health and strength. At a traditional Czech Christmas Eve dinner, mushroom soup may be the soup of choice. Like the garlic, mushrooms play an important role in Czech lives; in fact so much so that mushroom hunting could almost be considered the national sport in the Czech Republic. Entire families are known to wake at dawn, get their wicker baskets, and head for the forest to find the treasured delicacies. On Christmas Eve, a traditional meal, called “kuba,” made from dried mushrooms, barley, garlic, onion, and a blend of spices, at one time was served as the main course. Considered to be a good luck symbol, mushroom ornaments are displayed on Christmas trees, especially in Germany, in hope of having good luck in the coming year. Czech Mushroom Soup 6 servings
1 quart water 1 teaspoon caraway seeds 2 teaspoons salt 4 medium to large potatoes, peeled and diced
BROTHERHOOD
11.listopad.2015
4 tablespoons flour 4 cups sour cream 1 pound fresh mushrooms, thickly sliced 1 tablespoon fresh dill (or 1 teaspoon dried) 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Pour water into a 3- or 4-quart pot. Add caraway seeds and salt. Bring to a boil. Add potatoes. Boil covered for 15 minutes. Stir flour into sour cream. Stir flour mixture into potatoes (Curdles will smooth out). Add mushrooms; cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Turn off heat and sprinkle in dill and pepper. Whisk until smooth. If too thick, add a little milk. Stir and serve.
The mushroom glass Christmas ornament is available at the TCGS Gift shop for $12, while supply lasts. The gift shop is open every Wednesday between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. In addition, it will be open from November 30 through December 11, daily, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Or visit us during our Christmas Open House on December 7 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. —SPJST—

Youth encouraged to document Texas Czech traditions
I want you to know about a contest through the Smithsonian Institution called Global Folklorist Challenge with a deadline of November 30, 2015. They are looking for junior folklorists (age 18 and under) where kids interview members of their community and create short films about a cultural tradition. SPJST youth are encouraged to document Texas Czech traditions. A person might interview an older Texas Czech about accordion playing, singing Czech songs, Czech jokes and sayings they know, baking kolaches or other food traditions, playing taroky, wearing or making kroj, folk dancing or the grand march, Sokol, or their involvement in fraternal organizations. The interview should be about a skill or activity that a person is considered personally accomplished at (it’s not about history or traditions not practiced any longer). Contest information and last years winning short films can be found at http://challenges.epals.com/folklife2015/the-challenge/ Fraternally, Dawn Orsak Lodge 187, Round Rock —SPJST—
Czech Veterans proudly displayed on TCGS’ Wall of Honor at SPJST
Remembering those who paid for our freedom. That is the goal of Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor and Military Museum, located downstairs at the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple. The Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor was first displayed on March 27, 2010, at a TCGS event entitled Let Freedom Ring. Since that time, the wall has grown to well over 100 feet, honoring more than 1,000 Czech Veterans and continues to grow daily. TCGS is dedicated to preserving and honoring the sacrifice made by Czech Veterans. Viewed by hundreds, the Wall of Honor is on permanent display at the Home Office in Temple. “We are a museum which celebrates freedom . . . freedom paid for by the extraordinary sacrifices of our Czech Veterans,” says TCGS President Charlene Hurta. “A special alcove is dedi-
cated to those who paid the Ultimate Sacrifice. Almost a place of reverence, wooden plaques bearing the names of those who paid such a dear price are displayed by loved ones.” The Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor tells one story while extraordinary exhibits of personal memorabilia tell another. Exhibits like that of a Czech Veteran who served in both World War I and World War II, a prisoner in a concentration camp, and his original papers tell the story of only one of many brave Czech Veterans. The Czech Veterans Military Museum pays tribute to Czech Veterans while educating the public through exhibits and preserving military memorabilia.

There is always something to do, exercise everyday in the week, and very well-attended. Lots of entertainment, bus trips, and more fun! I have used the exercise since I arrived, and it has certainly helped me physically. We have games, arts and crafts, painting, and more. Ann Geil, —Ann Geil, Resident resident

I moved to Taylor when my son and his wife found this to be a wonderful place. Everyone here is so friendly and nice. Staff, employees, and residents are so willing and able to help in so many ways. There are so many fun things to do here. Today, we visited the Blanton Museum of Art down at the University of Texas. It was wonderful.
Lots of Entertainment and Fun
My name is Ruby Rakes. My husband Clarence and I have been married for 63 years. We came to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in March 2012. We moved here from Dumas, Texas, a small town north of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Our reason for moving here is that our daughter and her husband live here in Taylor, and we needed to be near them. We also have some of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that are in the area, too. We feel fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place. The staff is great, and they are very helpful in making everything pleasant. We find the staff and residents friendly Residents Clarence and Ruby Rakes and always willing to help. We enjoy the church services, musical entertainment, and bingo. There is always some kind of entertainment we can choose to attend. We would recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living to anyone.
Beautiful Place and the Staff is Great
