hanks to Lodge 29, Taylor member Donna Kaspar for sharing a video that she found on making kolaches. Donna writes, “I was watching some of my favorite PBS cooking shows on DVR. I watched “Cook’s Country” from November 21. They were reviewing ethnic sweets, and did a demo on making kolace! They did a fine job in briefly describing the history of the Czech immigrants to Texas, and also mention the SPJST and showed the logo on TV! And, never having actually made kolace myself, it looked like they did a great job with the recipe and process, from what I know only from helping my grandmother when I was young. Very exciting!” The video does make the art of kolaches look easier than I know it really is, but I certainly want to try this way very soon . . . maybe for Christmas! The video link can be found on our SPJST Facebook page or at http://www.cookscountry.com/ by searching “All-American Sweet Dough Desserts.”

Member shares Thanksgiving in Czech Republic

Dear Friends, Even though I am not on the soil of the USA, I still observe Thanksgiving Day! I taught at 6:30 a.m. and then again at 1 p.m. both in large companies. The topic was “Thanksgiving in the USA, the history and traditional meal.” All of my students enjoy hearing about it and why it is so special because the Pilgrims were the first emigrants and made it through the first winter with the help of the native Americans and what they learned from the natives on how to survive in the new world for them. We need to be thankful to our forefathers who left their homelands to set foot upon the soil in the United States

of America. They left for many reasons, each from different countries yet with the same dream of starting a new life for themselves and their families. Many of our ancestors who made this journey suffered many hardships along the way and even after reaching the shores of North America. Some helped liberate the land from England; some fought to save the Union; and others served in many different ways to make the USA what it is today. We should remember that we all might pray in a different way, but for the same reason . . . to give thanks for what we have and what we can achieve. Amen. As I will soon eat my turkey and dressing . . . John Kuba Potivin, Czech Republic Lodge 133, San Antonio —SPJST—

SPJST Outgoing Officer Plaque Each year, the Home Office receives a number of Outgoing Officer Plaque applications to honor elected lodge officers and directors. Eligibility is based on an outgoing officer who is not re-elected for the next year and does not plan to seek re-election again. This would be an officer that is an elder and not wanting to serve the lodge and its members in a leadership role – not an individual of a young age that may decide to serve again in the future. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be alive at time of selection.

SPJST Lifetime Achiever Award The definition of lifetime is the duration of a person’s life. This award is to recognize individuals or couples who have made a significant impact in

their lodge’s success and growth over a lengthy period of time. These individuals or couples should be of a mature age. In the past couple of years, the Home Office has received nomination applications for many young members that still have many years of service to the lodge and its members. Think about it . . . if a young or middle age member receives this award, is this telling them that they have achieved their significant impact to their lodge and here on out they are finished contributing to their lodge and its members? This year, please consider the age of the person(s) your lodge is wanting to recognize with the SPJST Lifetime Achiever Award. If there isn’t anyone that qualifies, please wait and consider it for the following year or years.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will continue through the month of March 2016. All members are encouraged to give their support as you have in the past. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large.

SPJST Scholarship Program The deadline for submitting applications for the SPJST Scholarship is no later then Monday, February 1, 2016. Any student (high school seniors and college undergraduates) who have not previously received a scholarship are eligible to apply. For an SPJST General Scholarship or Leadership Grant Application and complete guidelines, please call Executive Assistant to the President Sandra Dubcak in the SPJST Home Office at 800727-7578 or 254-773-1575 or visit www.spjst.org.

Progressive “42” Domino Tournament The first SPJST State Tournament of 2016 will take place on Saturday, January 9, 2016. This will be the State Progressive “42” Domino Tournament. This year, all tournaments will be held at the SPJST Home Office in

Temple, Texas. If you love Progressive 42 and enjoy fellowship, come and play with your fellow SPJST brothers and sisters in a friendly game of dominoes. We would love to have you there! Non-members will be permitted to participate in the Progressive 42 Domino Tournament. The registration fee for members and non-members will be $10. Some of my favorites include: Kolače, Fasankove koblihy (fried doughnuts), Sladko-kysele zeli (sweet sauerkraut), Okurkovy salat (cucumber salad), bramborovy salat (potato salad). If you are not Czech, then a side dish of your choice will be fine. You are going to feel like you are in the mother land with all the Czech

things going on like:

Fort Worth Ladies Circle

The November meeting of the Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth began with our seasonal holiday craft show. Included in the items on display and for sale were handsewn and crocheted goods, jewelry, antiques, homebaked delicacies, jams, jellies, artwork, and more. Members brought non-perishable items to supplement two Tarrant area food banks during the holidays and their busiest time of the year. The service work, community outreach, and fraternalism exhibited by this group is truly an inspiration to see in action! The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance being led by President Cathy Simmank, followed by Thanksgiving prayers and an inspirational reading from Theretta Praslicka. President Cathy welcomed guests including Joyce Wiley, a friend of members Mary Ann Adcock and Darlene Tompkins. She is a very nice lady, and we hope that she will become a member soon! The minutes of the October meeting were presented to the group by Secretary Joan Shropshire and approved as read. Treasurer Margaret Laymance updated the membership with the current status of our account, which brought smiles to everyone’s face. We have enough in our coffers to make our annual charitable donations! The sunshine report was presented by Marlene Bass. She was sorry to report that Lydia Alholm had fallen and that Doris Overstreet is scheduled for back surgery. However, we must not be a glum lot; Pauline Brownlee sent

and prior members who are in longterm care facilities. I didn’t count, but I am pretty sure that the “of courses” and the “yesses” tied! Not a single “no” was spoken. The decision as to which charities will benefit from the Ladies Circle contributions and the amount of charitable contributions for this year was tabled until our January 2016 meeting. An emphasis was put on the hostess list being passed for sign-up to make sure there were hostesses for January. Thank goodness the membership listens. We had volunteers sign up to provide meat and to serve in January. November hostesses Carolyn Belew, Ann Cooksey, Brenda Lackey, Betty Lloyd, and Janice Record definitely set the bar high with their many choices. The array of tempting food included fried chicken, ham, kraut, and sausage, and so many side dishes and salads. There was barely any room left on the serving table. The dessert table was overflowing, too! Speaking of goodies, it was decided that members would bring their favorite holiday treats - cookies, candy, baked goods - to share their recipes with everyone at the December meeting as well as bring a gift valued between $10 and $15 for the annual gift exchange. Please remember not to bring wine or alcoholic beverages for the exchange. Due to the gift exchange, there will not be a door prize drawing at the December meeting because we are all going to win in the gift exchange!

We played 13 games of bingo before the meeting was adjourned.

We look forward to seeing everyone for the catered holiday luncheon in December! Call of the Caregiver: What about You? by Greg Fitzhugh Lodge 25, Ennis

The phone rang just about the time I was going to bed. Who would be calling at this time of night? Whenever that happens, I always expect the worst. Someone has been in a car wreck, or is on the way to the hospital, or someone is stranded on the other side of town with a car that won’t run. So what was it this time? Car trouble? Heart attack? Robbery? Nope. The cat unplugged the refrigerator. My mother-in-law lived alone in a large, old house about 12 miles away and somehow, one of her cats had gotten behind the fridge, and now it was unplugged. Why does this stuff happen at 11:30 at night? I’m sure I’m not the only one. There’s been many a caregiver going about their business, caring for a loved one and looking for answers. Each day can present its own challenges and unique situations, where we must change our plans, reschedule our day, or just heave a sigh and get on with it. No one becomes a caregiver out of convenience. Mostly it comes from necessity. And there’s not a thing in the world wrong with that. Caregivers are good people, ready to roll up their sleeves and do what needs to be done. But you know what? I believe there’s more to it than that . . . more to that decision than simply having that “get it done” attitude. Deep inside, in the heart of a caregiver, lives the seed of love. Love is patient, love is kind. It does

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (NIV)(1 Corinthians 13:4– 8) When you commit to becoming a caregiver, just know that this task will require a lot of time and sacrifice. It is a difficult choice, and it should not be made lightly. plan. And we’re afraid to lose those plans. We do not want to give up our own plans. But there are some, when faced with this choice, find not choosing to help, . . . unacceptable. I’m here today as a witness. I’ve been a caregiver . . . twice. I’m not going to tell you it was easy. And yes, we had to change our plans. But, looking back, I believe it was the right choice. I have no regrets. And I would like to encourage you, as you consider your choices, that it’s not all gloom and doom. There are good days and happy times. And yes, there are days when you have to come over late at night just to plug-in the refrigerator. But it’s not hard to care for people you love. And I think it’s up to you to make

it what you want. Whatever you decide, (and there is no right or wrong answer), I would like suggest that you not let “fear” have a voice in your decision. Jackie was born in Wharton, Texas, on November 5, 1959, to Hilda and Julius Smolik, the J. Herschap fourth of their six children. She grew up in Newgulf and graduated from Boling High School. Following high school, she studied at Wharton County Junior College and eventually graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in accounting. She began her professional career as a CPA with the firm of Ernst and Whinney in Houston. In the following years, she was employed by Damson Oil Corp., American General Corp., Chase Bank, Resources Connection, NFP Securities, and lastly, Austin Regional Clinic. In their early years, the Smolik family moved three doors away from the Herschap family, and Max Douglas Herschap first asked Jackie to a church outing when she was in the fifth grade, and he was in the seventh. They remained close over the following years and later, after eight years of dating, Jackie married her high school

sweetheart and best friend Doug on June 11, 1983. Jackie and Doug lived in Houston for 12 years and had two children, Max and Alison Herschap, who are their parents’ delight. They moved to Austin in 1993. Jackie was a caring mother who proudly supported her children in all their activities, especially the Bowie High School Baseball Team and Silver Star Dance Team. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton. Jackie is survived by husband Doug; children Max and Alison; father Julius Smolik; brother Sam Smolik and wife Stephanie; and sisters Louann Kacal and husband Gary, Gayle Kacal, Gina Hand and husband Rob, and Lisa Stolle and husband, John. She was also loved deeply by her Herschap family, including A.C. and Marilyn Shelton, Trey and Vivian Herschap, Dane and Leanne Isenhower, and Tommy and Faith Johnson. Countless nieces, nephews, and friends will also remember her for the wonderful and exceptional woman she was. A celebration of Jackie’s life was observed at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 5 at Marshall Ford Fellowship in Austin. Fraternally, Janie Bucek, Secretary —SPJST—

Her spouse, children and grandchildren would like to honor Susan for her 73 years of sunshine that was sometimes seasoned with occasional obstinance. We were glad to be with her because of the affection she showed to others. Susan Sacky was a member of SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi and of Sokol. She was known for her deft touch in buttering kolache when baking with her friends of both organizations. We know Susan was reunited with her late parents Edward and Brazel Dougherty and in particular, with her brother Braeward Ferrell Dougherty who was lost to a traffic accident at an early age. She is survived by husband Frank L. Sacky; sons Kevin (Abby) and Paul; daughter Milena; and grandchildren Gabriella, Annika, and Mia. In Memory of Georgia Honza

Georgia Louise Honza, age 91, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014, in Fort Worth, Texas. Georgia was born February 25, 1923, in Telico to Charlie and Mary Rose Taraba Trojacek. She lived in Telico for a few years until her family moved to a new farm in Ennis. She had a happy childhood growing up on the farm with her sister Vickie and Georgia Honza brother Leo. She graduated from Ennis High School and moved to Fort Worth. During World War II, she worked as a real “Rosie, the Riveter” at the North American Aircraft Plant. She was of Czechoslovakian heritage and enjoyed the Czech dances in Fort Worth; that is how she became reacquainted with a young man she knew from junior high school. On January 2, 1947, she married the love of her life Frank Wesley Honza. On September 9, 1949, their only child Judy Kaye Honza was born. Frank worked at Convair (now Lockheed Martin) so they made their home in Fort Worth, but in the early years, they traveled to Ennis nearly every weekend to see their parents and work on the farm. She devoted her whole life to taking care of her family. She had worked at Montgomery Ward before her child was born and returned in 1963 to work at the tube station until she retired in 1984. She enjoyed her family of Montgomery Ward friends, and her daughter even worked on the eighth floor with her. Georgia and Frank were happily married until he died in 2001. They were members of St. Patrick Cathedral in Fort Worth, and she will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her especially her daughter, to which her mother was the whole world. Georgia was preceded in death by her parents Mary Rose Trojacek and Charlie Trojacek; husband Frank Wesley Honza; brother Leo Trajacek; and nephew Bobby Honza. Survivors include daughter Judy Kaye Honza; sister Victoria Kohn; nephew Gary Kohn; niece Sharon Wilson; sister-in-law Leona Honza; nephew Raymond Honza, Jr.; niece Linda Tolston; sister-in-law Mildred Patak; nieces Darlene Penrod and Jo

Ann Wester; nephew Ronnie Honza; sister-in-law Agnes Garrard; nieces Amelia Easter and Gayle Ueberroth; lifelong friend Belinda Hackleman; many great-nephews and great-nieces; and many friends. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 22 at J.E. Keever Mortuary with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m., Monday, June 23 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Ennis with Father John Dick as celebrant. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Ennis under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary. —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, GEORGE STEVE KADERA, SR. George entered this world weighing in at almost 11 pounds in an apartment above a dry goods store on West 19th Street in the Heights in Houston, Texas. The nickname “Big George” came about early on due to his large size at birth. His early childhood was spent going to the icehouse to pick up twenty-five pound blocks of ice for the family icebox and playing G. Kaderka, Sr. games with the neighborhood children such as “wood

19

tag”, “hide and seek”, and “red rover”. Rubber band guns were popular at the time too. Some of George’s more adventurous escapades included hooking rides on the back of neighborhood street cars for short rides and hitching rides on freight trains that ran about a block away from his residence. Time was also spent listening to radio programs such as the Orson Wells Show and Dick Tracy. Earning money as a youngster consisted of delivering grocery store circulars all day for fifty cents and selling newspapers on Saturday nights in the West 19th strip center which consisted of a movie theater, small shops, stores, and restaurants. George attended Cooley Elementary, Hamilton Junior High, and Reagan Senior High Schools. His participation in various athletic events at Carter City Park with older boys led to his participation in sports at school. He played football, basketball, and fast pitch softball while attending Hamilton Junior High. While at Reagan Senior High, he was an all-city football and basketball player, and became shotput and discus champion in the state. George served in the Army Air Corps as an airplane and engine mechanic and pre-flight instructor on then B17, B24, A29, A6, A20, B26, P47, P51, C46, and C47 aircraft. What a thrill that was for a 20-year-old! He also played football, fast pitch softball, and threw the shotput and discus while in the service. George received an athletic scholarship from Texas A&M College where he was on the football squad for three years and on the track squad for four years. In his freshman year, he won awards in the shotput, discus, and javelin. During his track career, he won more Southwest Conference championships than any other athlete; four in discus, two in shotput, and one in javelin. George was an All American in the discus in 1948 and had the second longest discus throw in the world. George was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco in February 2011. George earned a bachelor of science degree from Texas A&M University. He earned his masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Houston. He began his professional career teaching and coaching junior and senior high school students in the Houston Independent School District. George advanced into administration

He returned to Houston in September of 1977 to fill the position at Houston Community College as acting director of Student Development and later became director of Personnel Services. He was also a member of the Heights Rotary Club in Houston and also the McKinney Rotary Club serving as District Governor in 1995. He founded the Collin County 100 Club and served on the Historical Board of the City of McKinney. He was an active member of St. Peters Episcopal Church since 1966. George is survived by his wife Elsie of 64 years; children Karolynn Sawyer of Round Rock, George Kadera, Jr. of McKinney, Frances Vaughan of Van Alstyne and Alisha Grubbs of McKinney; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Hello, Readers! Sorry - I am a little behind on sending this, but I danced for Czech Heritage Month. My beseda group went and danced for the residents at Will-O-Bell nursing home in Bartlett. My great-grandma Urbanek lives there now. She has never seen me dance before. They brought a lot of the people in a big room, and we did our dance. After we danced, we all handed out cookies and punch to residents, and I visited with a couple of them. I had fun doing this and would like to go back soon. Czech Ho oliday Customs and Tr raditions Czechs begin preeparing for Christmas early – usually, by the middle of November. There aree a number of traditions. Some have changed while others have stayed the saame. • No lights should bee lit in the house before the first star comes out. After it does, dinner is servved. • The table should bee set for an even number of guests. An odd number brings bad luck. • An extra plate can be used to even out the number of guests. An extra plate should also be prepared in case an unexpected guest or a person in need comes by the house at dinner time. • The legs of the table can be tied with a rope to protect the house from thieves and burglars in the coming year. • No one should sit with their backs to the door. • Christmas dinner should consist of nine courses including soup, bread with honey, carp, potato salad, fruit (dried, fresh or canned), dessert (apple strudel or vanocka – Christmas bread), and other foods. • Everyone should finish their plate and leave nothing on the plate. These are just a few of the Czech holiday customs and traditions. Identify at least two holiday customs and traditions that your family observes. You can place your answers below:

TCGS presents Czech Christmas ornaments By Nancy Machu SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor

This article will be the last in a series that has featured the Legend, Symbol, and Tradition ornaments available from the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Gift Shop, located in the downstairs gallery of the SPJST Home Office building at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. Anyone intending to visit the gift shop is urged to act quickly because we will be open only through December 11. Vesele Vanoce - This is the most common greeting that Czechs worldwide use to say “Merry Christmas” to their Czech friends and family. It is so common and so extensively used that even “wanna-be” Czechs use it frequently! TCGS offers a simple, beautiful ornament with the words “Vesele Vanoce” inscribed on the front, along with the picture of a church. Printed on the reverse side is a description of Czech Christmas customs. This Czech greeting ornament is available, while supply lasts, for $10. Another ornament that is popular, not only on the Christmas tree, but year-long, is the beautiful Czech flag ornament. Viewing this ornament reminds us of our ancestors, who sold most of their possessions and left their fatherland to risk the long journey to a new home in America, seeking freedom and a better life for their families.

Their sacrifices should never be forgotten. The price of this collectible ornament is $6. The church holds a prominent place in the lives of Christians. Our delicate, snow-covered glass church ornament reminds us of the Christmas story as described in the Book of Matthew in the New Testament. The church ornament is priced at $12. The center of the family is the home, and one way to express this during the Christmas season is to display a small silver and white house on your Christmas tree. This ornament, like the church, is silver and blue, and appears to have white snow covering it. It is priced at $12. A few of the other ornaments featured in our gift shop, made by established ornament factories in the Czech Republic, are shown in this article. The blue oval medallion is a two-sided ornament. One side simply says “Merry Christmas.” The reverse side shows a beautiful, snow-covered scene. This ornament is available for $15. Several other very desirable ornaments that would look great on every Christmas tree are a deep red ball with white swirls; a clear ball with gold

designs; a deep navy blue round ornament showing the nativity; a clear ornament showing the nativity in black; a clear ball with simple red poinsettias encircling it, and others. We invite you to see the entire collection by visiting our gift shop. We wish to inform readers that the TCGS Gift shop is the place to shop for Czech gifts. We offer a nice array of Czech crystal, Czech porcelain, jewelry, rosaries, dictionaries, maps, books and eggs. We also have men’s caps, aprons with Czech words (Babicka, Matka, etc.), cookbooks, bumper stickers, and other novelties. Very small quantities of Josef Lada inspired 2016 calendars are available to a few lucky shoppers. And, of course, we have a good supply of TCGS published books to help you research your Czech genealogy. The Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Gift Shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. five days a week from November 30 through December 11. The gift shop will close on December 11 at 4 p.m. and will reopen on January 6, 2016. The officers and chairs of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society wish to thank you for your support of our organization during 2015. We wish you and yours a most blessed Christmas season and a new year filled with good health, happiness, and friendships. We look forward to seeing each of you in 2016. —SPJST—

BROTHERHOOD

9.prosinec.2015

Všechny dosavadní akce byly rozumné a vedly ke zlepšení vzhledu pozemku a rovněž budova budí dobrý

dojem uvnitř a i zvenku. Stane se příkladem pokroku, které město zaznamenalo od neštěstí v minulosti. S bratrským pozdravem Jan Vaculík. —SPJST—

Staff, employees, and residents are so willing and able to help in so many ways. There are so many fun things to do here. Today, we visited the Blanton Museum of Art down at the University of Texas. It was wonderful.

Lots of Entertainment and Fun

My name is Ruby Rakes. My husband Clarence and I have been married for 63 years. We came to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in March 2012. We moved here from Dumas, Texas, a small town north of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Our reason for moving here is that our daughter and her husband live here in Taylor, and we needed to be near them. We also have some of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that are in the area, too. We feel fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place. The staff is great, and they are very helpful in making everything pleasant. We find the staff and residents friendly Residents Clarence and Ruby Rakes and always willing to help. We enjoy the church services, musical entertainment, and bingo. There is always some kind of entertainment we can choose to attend. We would recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living to anyone.
