Adopt a Grandparent Success
By Julie Stermer S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Marketing Director
‘Twas the first Christmas in our new home at S.P.J.S.T. Nursing and Rehabilitation in Taylor, and Mr. and Mrs. Claus made it an exceptional one for all of us! Santa is real and made a difference. The community of Taylor gave so generously to all of our residents. When the residents received all of the gifts, the expressions on their faces was something to behold. They were overwhelmed with gratitude, and many said this was their best Christmas ever! We want all the many individuals who were so considerate and giving to know their generosity is greatly appreciated. Three major contributors to this special event were Durcon; SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor; and the Taylor Fire Department. Thank you from the family of S.P.J.S.T. Nursing and Rehabilitation! Photos are on page 13. —SPJST— RIGHT PHOTO: Josephine Zrubek shares her Christmas wishes with Santa.

big SPJST congratulations to seven of our sales agents who will soon be departing the port of Galveston aboard Liberty of the Seas for a sevennight western Caribbean cruise. What a wonderful time awaits Kerry Herrington of Lodge 142, Houston; Janice Jahns of Lodge 88, Houston; Patsy Koslovsky of Lodge 47, Seaton; Albin Machu of Lodge 29, Taylor; Gay Revel of Lodge 97, Placedo; Arnie Rivera of Lodge 219, South Plains; and Susan Skrabanek of Lodge 17, New Tabor. These agents earned the trip in the 2016 “Seeking the Treasures of SPJST” annual incentive based on their persistency and annualized premium production. We will soon share the “Live the Adventure” 2017 SPJST Membership Program in the Vestnik. It is filled with many incentives for members, agents, lodges, and youth clubs. Stay tuned!
I received this message from a dear friend recently, and it really made me think how unique and special we all are. YOU are unique.
Think of all the people who live or have ever lived on our planet since the very beginning of time. None of them are like you. What a miraculous thing it is to be you! Nobody has the same combination of talents, abilities, sorrows, and opportunities. VESTNIK
No one has the same friends, the same family jokes, or the same acquaintances. Nobody’s finger prints are the same. No one has the same concerns or goals as you. No one! You are unique. Accept and enjoy this uniqueness. You don’t have to pretend to be more like others expect you to be. Don’t be afraid to be different. No one in the world has the same things going on in their mind, soul, or spirit as you have going on in yours. It is a gift only to you. Treasure and share your uniqueness. Nobody can speak your words. Nobody can smile your smile. No one can leave the same impact on another person as you do. Enjoy how unique you truly are, let it flow out and touch your family and friends, and all the people you meet. Give yourself away and be inspired by the fact that you are UNIQUE. And don’t you ever try to change that. Because you’re perfect that way, and people will value you because you are YOU.
Stay tuned to the Vestnik for these upcoming features: Lodges 18, Elgin activities; 23, Moravia Christmas; 67, Schulenburg Christmas; 80, Holland bingo; and Ladies Circle at Lodge 92, Fort Worth. —SPJST— More to Come

Dear Melanie, I enjoy and support the continuing of the SPJST calendar. When you have grands and children involved and are posted on the calendar, it means a lot to the grandparents and is a joy to see the other children win from other lodges, too. Plus, I enjoy the recipes on the calendar from Youth Achievement Day! Maybe the SPJST budget committee can find other ways to “trim” the budget than do away with the calendar. From the postings, I see others are also wanting it to be kept published. Thanks, Lillian Beasley SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor —SPJST—

Member makes stained glass flag
Hello! I recently made this USA flag at my shop in El Campo, Texas. It is made on a thick glass with stained glass on top. The sun will shine through it, and the colors will look awesome. The flag measures 6 feet, 6 inches by a little over 3 feet. It will need a heavy duty stand. It is very durable in the weather. I am looking to sell it to someone or to a business that will proudly display it. I am located at 1301 South Mechanic in El Campo Texas. My phone number is 979-578-2909, and my website is mosaicsbykaren.com. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Karen Holub Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton members enjoy Christmas party
Dear Vestnik Readers, SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton held its annual Christmas party on Sunday, December 11, 2016. It was great to see so many members and guests attending. Thank you to the youth club members and leaders, Joyce Kraatz, Amber Bartek, Sharla Pechal, and Chelsey Bilbrey for the memorable memorial service in which 22 of our deceased members were remembered. Thank you to family and youth members who lit a candle in memory of their loved one. Each family was given the candle and a framed poem, “Merry Christmas from
Heaven.” Youth members shared a cute Christmas skit with the audience and sang Christmas songs. What joy came by singing “Here Comes Santa Claus.” The jolly, happy man came in bringing joy not only to the young, but to all in attendance. Thank you, Santa, for dropping by for a visit. We encourage you to bring your child and get involved with the Seaton Youth Club. The youth have so much fun, and there are so many activities for them. Their meetings are held on the first Sunday of each month at 1 p.m. at Star Hall. Everyone enjoyed the social hour of drinks and visiting before the evening meal was served. The turkey, dressing, and sausage were fantastic. The side dishes and desserts furnished by members and guests were unbelievable.
Thank you, everyone! We were honored to have special guests from the SPJST Home Office: President Brian Vanicek and wife Joan, District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny Nauert and husband David, State Youth Director Lynette Talasek, District One Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick and wife Janice. I know there were some who spent Friday evening, Saturday, and all day Sunday at the hall. You are all very much appreciated. A lot of work is involved, but the visiting and fun we have is well worth the time and work. We welcome each of you who came to the Christmas party to join us at our monthly meetings and other activities at the lodge. As SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton

As I sit here on New Year’s Eve reflecting on the passing of an incredible year, wondering if 2017 will be as good to us as was this year, I’m reminded of the people we’ve lost, and the many adventures we’ve been on. We are so blessed to be a part of the Ladies Circle of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Each month we welcome new members and continue to share love with each other. Our meetings are a peek at how generations can get together and enjoy each other’s company. I must apologize at my lack of reporting from the November meeting. I overcommitted myself and couldn’t tell
if I was coming or going. It was really bad. So while I am very late, please forgive me. Following is a brief synopsis of our activities for the meeting. We had more than 40 ladies attend in November, and we welcomed several visitors. Our meeting started with a moment of silence in honor of Willie Mae Becan who went to her heavenly home. Vice President Janet Basham gave advice on the use of free-standing postal boxes. Don’t use them was her suggestion. Quite often, they are broken into and your mail may not reach its destination. Next, in tribute of Thanksgiving, members submitted “notes of thanks” to be read. The general consensus was we’re all thankful for God, family, health, and the ladies of the Circle. Without a doubt, each one contained at least one of those bless-

ings. After minutes were read and the financial report was given, officers were elected. Cathy Simmank will continue as president, Janet Basham as vice president, Margaret Laymance as treasurer, and yours truly as secretary and reporter. You’d think they would be tired of me by now: apparently not. Last of all, while we are not a service organization, we do try to extend kindness to those less fortunate. We offer food and money, school supplies, can tabs, and labels in honor of our late Gloria Farek. We miss her as she always kept us on track of issues that need to be addressed. We have also been collecting pennies for the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive, and come January, we will decide to support a couple of other organizations

Happy Birthday, Gene McBride!

The residents of S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living facility in Taylor, Texas, got a special treat when Santa Claus decided to make a surprise appearance during Paul Schlesinger’s Knights of Texas Swing Christmas music show. Santa, aka Matt Baran of Taylor, bounded into the room during the band’s rendition of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.” Santa not only greeted each one of the residents, but also joined the combo for a group sing-along version of “Jingle Bells.” Santa then took his place in the audience for the remainder of the program. He told the audience his reindeer team was taking a break next door at Sonic Drive-In. Matt Baran, the man behind the real, snow-white beard, has been pleasing folks with his interpretation of Santa for a decade. “Ten years ago, an idea came to me to begin offering to play the role of St. Nick,” he says. “I enlisted the help of one of my sisters to create an outfit that portrayed a time of long ago, that began what has become a very rewarding undertaking. A change occurs in me as young and old alike begin to see the spirit of Christmas that I represent. It has become a real and fascinating time filled with hugs and whispered lists of what is wanted. I feel blessed to carry on this tradition.” Judging by the smiles on the residents’ faces, Matt’s dream is a blessing indeed.

The Knights of Texas Swing typically perform once a month at Taylor’s S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living facility and are led by fiddler Paul Schlesinger of Taylor. Paul is a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor, and has regularly brought music to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living for many years. The group includes his wife Tara on piano, Ray Tesmer of Round Rock on lead guitar, and Dennis Schroeder of Thorndale on rhythm guitar. The Schlesingers were recently named Entertainers of the Year by the Country Music Hall of Fame of Gatesville, and play as a couple at the Lee and Milam County Cowboy Churches, and with the Comal Country Music Show in New Braunfels, and as members of the Stardusters band in Austin. Ray Tesmer is a member of the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame and has played with many area bands from the 1950s to the present, including Howard Wusterhausen and the Lone Star Ramblers, the Jody Jay Band, the King of Swing, the Stardusters, and the Knights of Texas Swing. Dennis Schroeder is also a well-known area entertainer who specializes in western music and cowboy lore. He leads a group called Cowboys For Hire. His family owns Schroeder’s Place in Thorndale, home of great, old-fashioned burgers and more. —SPJST—

with donations. The meeting ended with lunch and bingo. The December meeting brought together over 60 members and guests. We had our annual gift exchange and luncheon. There is always a lot of laughter and nice presents. This year, The Chicken Place located in Keller catered, and we loved the food. There were leftovers - enough to take home for dinner, and everything was outstanding. Our sweet president compiled a recipe book for each of the members from submitted recipes. She goes way above and beyond of what is required of her, and we appreciate her and all that she does to make this Circle continue to move forward. Thank you, Cathy! So this is it from Ladies Circle

In Memory of Donald Beckendorf
Donald Wayne Beckendorf. Born June 27, 1949. Baptized in Christ in July 1949 and confirmed on June 16, 1957, all at Rosehill United Methodist Church. Taken by God on January 1, 2017. Loving son, husband, father, and grandfather. He was bigger than life and had many accomplishments to show his dedication for his faith and family. He was a volunteer at the Rosehill Volunteer Fire Department from 1965 to 1995; on the board of trustees for Perry United Methodist Church (four years); Gideon (five years); president Donald Beckendorf and vice president for SPJST Lodge 182, Falls County during 1990 to 2010; vice president for SPJST Lodge 196, Houston-West (three years); Houston Livestock Show Sponsor of Commercial Steer Records Book Award (five years); volunteered at the Houston Livestock Commercial Steer Committee (20-plus years); volunteered at the Houston Livestock Show Ag Mechanics Show (18 years); sponsor of FFA and FCCLA from 1990 to 2006; Sunday School teacher for two years at Forestburg; and member of Global German Society for four years. His deepseeded love for the outdoors and cattle was long ingrained in his history. He was fourth generation dairy farmer on one side of his family and third on the other. He enjoyed being outside and working with the land. He was a retired dairyman, but continued to farm and ranch. His love and dedication for life supersedes him. He was the type of person that would give you the shirt off his back if he knew you needed it. He was always a shoulder to cry on and had a reassuring bear hug or kind word to get you through tough times. He always believed in God’s greater plan and lived his life through the word of the Bible. He never met a stranger and always had a kind word to say. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, especially giving his grandsons rides on the tractor (which they requested often). He leaves behind his mother and fa-
ther, Vada and Marvin Beckendorf; his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, DeAnn Beckendorf; children Jason and wife Becky Beckendorf, Dana and Scott Farrell, Jeannie and Justin Parker, and Daniel Beckendorf; grandchildren Bailee, Paetyn, and Tynlee Beckendorf, Sam Farrell, and Liam Parker; and numerous other children whom he claimed and who claimed him. There is no doubt that Donald is a beautiful addition to Heaven where his booming voice is sure to be heard while handing out bear hugs and handshakes. The memories of his giving spirit will live on in all the numerous people he touched by his example of love, faithfulness, and being a servant of God. He will be deeply missed. Let us say goodbye as we watch Donald go off into the sunset on his tractor one more time. —SPJST—
In Memory of Evelyn Matula
Evelyn Matula was born on January 10, 1922, in Holland, Texas, to Anton and Mary Motloch. She went to be with our Lord and her heavenly family on Monday, November 21, 2016, at the age of 94. She was a lovEvelyn Matula ing wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend who will be greatly missed. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Emil E. Matula, Sr.; children Jeanette Matula, Kenneth Joe Matula, and Kathy Jean Murley. She is survived by daughter Jarolyn Popp and husband Bob; daughter Margaret Schauffele and husband Roy; son Emil E. Matula, Jr. and Yolanda Lopez; grandchildren Robert (Audra) Popp, III, Emil E. Matula, III, Jason (Emily) Murley, Michelle (Clay) Click, Joseph (Monica) Matula, Karen (Cody) Williams, Bryan Murley, Valerie (Allan) Harari, and Megan Schauffele; greatgrandchildren Noah, Nathan, Natalie, and Nicholas Popp, Josie and Carrie Murley, Harper Click, Wylie Williams, and Ellie Harari. Growing up in the small farming
community of Granger, Evelyn met the love of her life Emil E. Matula, when she was 14 years old. Their friendship grew during the years that Emil served overseas during World War II, and they were married on February 5, 1946. Together, they shared 67 years of wonderful love and memories. On his death bed, when her husband Emil asked his daughter, “How long have mom and I been married?” his response to 67 years was, “Not long enough.” In a letter Emil wanted read at his funeral was this statement: “I want everyone to know that my wife was the best thing that ever happened in my life.” Evelyn dedicated herself to her husband and children. She rejoined the work force when her youngest child started school in 1965. What was to be a part-time job soon became full-time and 20 years later, she retired from the Frito Lay Company. During retirement, Evelyn traveled extensively with her husband, spending time in Europe and attending 35th Infantry and Pearl Harbor Survivor reunions all over the country. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren who have many fond memories of their special time with Grandma. Evelyn’s goal when she was young was to be a nurse. She enrolled in the nursing program at St. John’s Hospital in Corpus Christi. When her three brothers were drafted in the war, she returned home to help her parents on the farm. However, her love of medicine was a gift when her second daughter became an invalid. She nursed her around the clock while caring for four other children. Because she only had a grammar school education, she made sure her children took education seriously. She took great pride in the fact all nine of her grandchildren graduated from college. Prayer was central to her life. She had a special devotion to St. Jude and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Dementia limited her ability to recite prayers, but when anyone prayed with her, it was obvious she knew the prayers internally. Today, Evelyn is chanting her prayers with the angels and those who went before her. Evelyn was a member of SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio, KJZT and KJT, San Antonio, Hermann Sons, Holy Name Altar Society, and neighborhood Bunco Club. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and SPJST Scholarship Fund. —SPJST—
