Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest Inspires, Motivates, Boosts Self Confidence “SPJST - Where Every Kid is a Winner.” “SPJST - The Best is Yet to Be.” “SPJST Youth - Czech Us Out!” “SPJST YOUth are the Future.”
These are a few of the themes from past SPJST Camp Tee-Shirts Design Contests. Camp tee-shirts have been around for a long time in SPJST, and in 1988, the Youth Program began the contest for youth members to create an artistic design for summer camp teeshirts. The contest is open to all active SPJST youth club members who are entering kindergarten to high school senior. This year’s theme is “SPJST Live the Adventure,” and the deadline for entering a design is January 31.
Complete details are on page 25 of this week’s Vestnik, and an entry form also appears on page 25. All youth club members are encouraged to enter. The Vestnik contacted several past grand prize winners of the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest and asked them questions about their experience. They shared valuable, common sense advice for today’s youth club members.
What did it mean to you to win the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest?
1988 Winner Darlene (Migl) Polly: What an honor it was to win the very first SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest in 1988! I remember my prize being a disc camera and a boom box radio. I still have my tee-shirt!
1989 Winner Marlene (Migl) Satterwhite: I was thrilled! It was exciting to see my design come to life and be worn by all SPJST campers that summer and beyond! I’ve always had a passion for drawing and art. You could say winning the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest was a stepping stone in my career path. It boosted my confidence, encouraged me to take graphic design classes in high school, and led to a degree in Graphic Communications at the University of Houston. It’s still exciting when my work is featured in national publications and design annuals, on signage at international airports, and billboards around Houston, etc. 1996 Winner Scott Hudson: I was very grateful and content.

Dear Readers, As a prior winner of the SPJST TeeShirt Design Contest, I encourage everyone eligible to participate. Although I am no longer in the youth club, my mother and grandmother still wear the tee-shirt that I designed with pride. After the youth club, as some recall, I joined the military and deployed to Afghanistan. Currently, I am working as a heavy equipment mechanic and going to college to be a mechanical engineer. I am proud to say that I have earned straight A’s so far! Entering and winning the contest inspired me to use my imagination with artwork, college assignments, and also shows that hard work and creativity do not go unnoticed. I hope to have been able to encourage today’s youth just as I was inspired by the generation before me. “YOUth are the future.” Sincerely, Blake Ryan Lodge 25, Ennis 2003 Tee-Shirt Design Contest Winner
Happy Valentine’s Day
*Must be an active Youth Club member to apply for the Leadership Grant.

1. HOLD REGULAR LODGE MEETINGS IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 88 OF THE SPJST BY-LAWS AND OFFER A WELLROUNDED FRATERNAL PROGRAM. Every lodge is required to hold regular meetings to discuss lodge business with their members. Service to each other — as fellow SPJST members — and service to the community that we serve is an important part of SPJST’s mission. Rather than mandating a specific number of fraternal activities that your lodge must accomplish in a given year in order to remain in good standing and qualify for incentives, the greater focus is on lodges working to host a healthy mix of “quality” events that bring value to SPJST’s community presence.
2. RETURN ALL REQUESTED PAPERWORK ON TIME BY THE DUE DATE.
Every lodge is required to send in all requested paperwork that is needed from the lodge. This includes Form 990, Form 990-T, fraternal activity summaries, and updated lodge officer listing.
2017 Membership Drive
Live the Adventure is the theme of SPJST’s 2017 SPJST Membership Drive. As sales agents, lodge leaders, and members, we are in a unique position to help others discover the value that comes from owning an SPJST life insurance certificate or annuity and being an active member. The year 2017 represents the opportunity for a new beginning in SPJST. The 2017 Membership Drive is loaded with incentives for sales agents, members, lodges, and youth clubs working to make a positive difference in the lives of SPJST members.
We Are on a Mission!
The goals and objectives of SPJST are reflected in its organizational mission statement and vision statement:
SPJST Mission Statement
Insuring and enriching lives.
SPJST Vision Statement
Our vision is to provide a wholesome family environment; to encourage cherished Czech traditions; and to provide high quality, competitive life insurance for our members.
Lodge Incentives
• Enhanced Premium Refunds
Traditionally, one of the most important financial benefits that the SPJST Supreme Lodge has extended to local lodges is the annual Premium Refund Program. The purpose of this program has been to help SPJST lodges keep their operations on a sound financial basis. The 2017 Membership Drive will once again include Enhanced Premium Refunds. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:
1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.00% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.
To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:
3. SUBMIT ROUTINE LETTERS/PHOTOS TO THE VESTNIK.
Every lodge is required to routinely submit news of upcoming events, lodge meetings, and/or meeting/event summaries and/or photographs to the Vestnik as well as to their local media. Of course, the lodge may contribute to the Vestnik more frequently than once a month. Unless otherwise noted in the Vestnik, the deadline for submitting items for publication is the Wednesday preceding the publication date of the next issue. For more information, please contact Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny.
Enhanced Premium Refund will be withheld from a lodge deemed to be “non-compliant.” Enhanced Premium Refunds will be retained in escrow for a non-compliant lodge until May 1, 2018. Upon regaining compliant status, lodge will receive its Enhanced Premium Refund. The Enhanced Premium Refund formula enables lodges to benefit in direct proportion to the amount of earned premium that is generated by the lodge. As such, there will be no maximum amount that any lodge can receive.
• Gold Star Lodge
In addition to receiving an Enhanced Premium Refund, qualifying lodges that generate at least $10,000 in earned premium — excluding dump-ins and 1035 exchanges — on new business issued in 2017 will receive designation as an SPJST Gold Star Lodge and recognition at the 2018 incentive awards presentation and banquet held in their respective districts.
The Supreme Lodge reserves the right to periodically revisit the terms and incentives provided in the 2017 Live the Adventure Membership Drive, making such adjustments and/or enhancements as necessary to ensure the success of the program and its participants.
Guidelines for New Lodges and Lodges in Existence Fewer Than Five Years For a newly chartered lodge, the lodge incentive award will be prorated from the date of the lodge’s organizational meeting. The lodge must also meet fraternal reporting requirements.
During the first five years of its existence, any lodge that receives an award greater than $2,000, the excess amount will be deposited into the SPJST Lodge Management Fund. The lodge can access the funds at any time with two lodge officers’ signatures, subject to the approval of the Supreme Lodge President and Supreme Lodge Vice President.

Member Referral Incentives
• All SPJST Members - Adults and Youth
When it comes to getting new members, there is no substitute for referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he/she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest.
• Monthly Prize Drawing - 3 Drawings for $25 Wal-Mart Gift Cards
The name of each member who sends in a referral card(s) during the month will go into a drawing for three $25 Wal-Mart gift cards. The referrer also benefits by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge. Referral cards are available from the SPJST Home Office, at SPJST-sponsored events and online at www.spjst.org.
Please help us to ensure that the leads that you pass on are quality leads. We would not want any sales agents to devote precious time to calling on unqualified leads. A good referral is someone who you have spoken to about membership and/or life insurance in SPJST and who has expressed an interest in joining. In visiting with your prospective lead, make sure that he or she knows that an SPJST Sales Agent will call.

Schlesingers named Entertainers of the Year
Paul and Tara Schlesinger of Taylor were recently named Entertainers of the Year by the Country Music Hall of Fame of Gatesville, Texas. The announcement took place at the December Comal Country Music Show in New Braunfels where the Schlesingers perform as members of the house band on a monthly basis.
Roger Vierse, director of the Gatesville Country Music Hall of Fame, presented the Schlesingers with certificates and a trophy in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments and musical abilities. Paul had previously been inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012, and named its Country and Swing Artist of the Year in 2014. “Tara and Paul

mean an awful lot to the members of the Hall of Fame, and to a lot of people around the country, as they sing and play everywhere.” says Vierse. “It was our distinct honor to induct Paul into the Hall of Fame. I felt he had everything going for him in the right direction. Then he went and got married . . . and things only improved!” The Gatesville Country Music Hall of Fame holds a show every month in their city auditorium, and the Schlesingers were featured performers in September. Of all the entertainers that performed throughout the year, the Hall of Fame’s directors felt the Schlesingers deserved their highest annual recognition. Due to the Schlesingers’ travel schedule, the presentation occurred on stage in New Braunfels rather than the Gatesville Hall of Fame. Paul, a lifelong resident of Taylor and a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor, is a fiddle player and vocalist, and his wife Tara, previously from Rosanky, Texas, is a pianist and vocalist. They married on June 27, 2015. The couple performs regularly at the Lee and Milam County Cowboy Churches, S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living facility in Taylor, and once a month for the South Austin Senior Dance Club as members of the Stardusters band. As previously mentioned, they also play at the Comal Country Music Show in New Braunfels, held at the KC Hall on the third Tuesday every month.

Paul’s band, the Knights of Texas Swing, performs at many area venues, including Patsy’s Café in Austin, and the annual Old Settler’s Reunion in Round Rock. His latest CD, Paul Schlesinger and his Knights of Texas Swing, was released earlier this year, and unites Paul with many renowned western swing performers whose recording histories date back to the 1940s. The CD has been nominated for an Academy of Western Artists Award in Western Swing, and earned a five-star review in the July issue of Country Music People, an internationally distributed magazine from the UK. Their November issue features a four-page interview and pictorial focusing on Paul’s music background. As of December, the CD has held the number one position for the most requested album on the nationally distributed “Swingin’ West” western swing radio show for the past four months. The track “This Song Is Just For You,” held the number two position for three months on the same chart. The CD can be purchased from Paul’s website, www.paulschlesinger.com, Friends of the Bride in Taylor, Plain Jane’s On Main in Taylor, Unique Celebrations in Bartlett, the Dowdy House in Lexington, and the KRXT radio station in Rockdale. Paul is a 22-year employee of the Texas Dental Association in Austin. Through the years, he has participated in and won many SPJST-sponsored tarok tournaments. He also performs with Glen Collins and the Alibis, a classic-country show and dance hall band who have been featured on the syndicated television program “Songwriters Across Texas,” and perform all over Central Texas, including regular dances in area venues such as the Taylor and Elgin SPJST halls. Tara is an assistant activities coordinator at S.P.J.S.T. Skilled Nursing facility in Taylor. She has a love for classic country, southern gospel, swing, and oldies rock-style music. She played in local bands around the Bastrop area, including the country-gospel group Gettin’ on Track, as well as the Hwy 304 Band, playing everything from the Eagles, Georges Strait and Jones, Patsy Cline, Fats Domino, Floyd Cramer, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Carla was born Carla Mergele on September 2, 1947, in Seguin to Harold and Clydie (Hester) Brodt. Carla was a member of the Seguin High School class of 1965. She was also a member of the American Legion HU Wood Post 245 Auxiliary, a founding member of the Luling Cowboy Bible Church in 1997, the Seguin Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, and the Seguin Citizens Fire Academy Alumni Association. A native of Seguin, many people knew Carla and her husband Richard, as the owners of Seguin Gun and Pawn, but everyone knew her as the most selfless, loving, and sweetest person in town. She loved to love people; she was a devoted caregiver to many people, so much so that she kept an ongoing prayer list in her Bible so that she could pray for them daily on her sunrise and sunset walks. She even kept a separate calendar at home just for birthdays and anniversaries so that she could send them cards, even when she was battling cancer. Carla also loved animals, having many of her dogs, horses, and pygmy goats follow her on her walks. But, the ones whom Carla loved more than all, were her family members. She was the greatest wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend one could hope to have. Carla was devoted to God and Jesus’ light shone brightly through her. She was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law Gus Mergele; and brother-in-law Jan Mergele. Carla is survived by devoted husband Richard Mergele; loving sons Clint Mergele and wife Mistty and Logan Mergele and wife Amber; grandchildren Elliott, Hadley, Harper, and Haze Mergele; sisters Betty Lee Reiley and husband Jimmy, Barbie Von Minden and husband Richard, Dottsy Dwyer
and husband Robin, and Toni Winters; mother-in-law Mary Jane Mergele; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members; and many, many, friends. So go and run free
So go and run free with the angels Dance around the golden clouds For the Lord has chosen you to be with Him And we should feel nothing but proud Although He has taken you from us And our pain a lifetime will last Your memory will never escape us But make us glad for the time we did have Your face will always be hidden Deep inside our hearts Each precious moment you gave us Shall never, ever depart So go and run free with the angels As they sing so tenderly And please be sure to tell them To take good care of you for me

Christmas 2016 has come and gone, but the memories will last forever. Our youth made Christmas cards and delivered them to the residents of the nursing home while singing Christmas carols. We also adopted a needy family in Ennis and delivered
gifts to them on Christmas Eve. District Three celebrated at Six Flags Holiday in the Park, and the youth had so much fun hanging out, drinking hot chocolate, and making memories!

N DESIG ME!
Tee-Shirt Contest
Continued from Page 1.
1997 Winner Karen (Bender) Hargraves: Winning the tee-shirt contest was an amazing experience! It’s so fun to see your design on everyone at camp and at different events during the year. I’m not a super creative person artistically, and the design I came up with was not very detailed or intricate, but it turned out to be the only design of its kind, and was picked because of the originality. The great thing about the contest is everyone has a shot at winning - no matter your drawing abilities!
2010 Winner Rachel McManus: It was more of an accomplishment. I felt proud, and it was a little confidence booster that showed me I can do things, I just have to have the courage to try. Even after submitting designs several years in a row, I finally got it! 2011 Winner Colby Havemann: I remember when I won. It was my last year in the youth program. I had just

graduated high school and was moving on. I felt like it was the icing on the cake to my time in SPJST. I had won State King, went to camp every year, participated in YAD, and danced the beseda. SPJST gave me so many wonderful memories, and it was refreshing to know that I would leave behind something for years to come. Yes, we get new shirts every year, but the memories that are made in that year will last a lifetime.

2006 and 2009 Winner Stephanie Vanicek: Being recognized for my teeshirt designs helped me build confidence in my design and illustration skills. It was a great feeling to have my work seen by a large audience and to know that people enjoyed what I made. These competitions and other art contests, especially events like Youth Achievement Day, encouraged me to think creatively and helped me realize that drawing, painting, and making things is very fulfilling to me.
2007 and 2012 Winner Brooke Hoelscher: After winning the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest, I was so shocked and surprised that I had won! It was so exciting to see all the SPJST members across the state wearing my design. Kinda like being a rock star!

How did winning the contest help with your career or life in general?
Darlene (Migl) Polly: The SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest was my first design competition award. I went on to graduate from the University of Houston with a degree in Graphic Communications and a minor in Marketing. My work has been featured in multiple design annuals and recognized by professional advertising organizations.

Scott Hudson: It gave me the courage to enter more design contests throughout my life. Also, it allowed me to think more creatively when expressing myself over a certain topic. SPJST taught me that benevolence and brotherhood are important qualities to keep in one’s life.
Karen (Bender) Hargraves: I will say that winning the contest came right off the high of being the State Queen the year before. It really made me feel like I could conquer anything!
Marlene (Migl) Satterwhite: Don’t miss your chance at SPJST camp tee-shirt glory! You have nothing to lose, plus the prizes are pretty fantastic. Be creative, have fun, design something you’d be proud to wear! Good luck!
Stephanie Vanicek: The experience helped me realize that I wanted to continue drawing and expressing myself through images, which eventually helped me decide to major in Design in college. I make an effort to keep illustration a major part of my life, and I plan for it to gain importance in my professional career as I continue to develop my skills and portfolio. The

competition aspect of the tee-shirt design contest showed me that I have a desire to stand apart and be seen as someone with original ideas. I also ended up designing a couple of teeshirts for college organizations I was involved in, and that was a pretty direct result of knowing that I had been able to do it before with SPJST. Brooke Hoelscher: For me personally, it boosted my self-confidence and my creative skills. It made me feel like I was capable of great things. It also helped me to grow into a future career (graphic design/visual communication).

taught me how to conduct meetings in a professional way which is very beneficial to me now. Holding the different positions taught me to be organized and helped with sorority involvement and holding positions. The network connections I formed within the group has been beneficial in different situations. SPJST also provided scholarships for college and that helped a lot for me to come out of college debtfree.
Rachel McManus: The contest did not help with my career and life in general, but the SPJST as a whole really benefited me later on. I was more comfortable speaking and performing in front of people through participating in YAD. The youth group meetings
Colby Havemann: I feel that the sense of accomplishment I got from winning motivated me in life to do things that I am unsure of the outcome. When I entered the contest, it was just on a whim. I remember getting the piece of paper with the blank square on it at a lodge meeting and thinking what am I going to even draw? I think overall it prepared me to be optimistic, to go outside my comfort zone and try something new . . . to take chances.

Darlene (Migl) Polly, a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, is a senior graphic designer at a creative design agency in Houston. “I bring creative concepts to life through marketing, branding, design and print for businesses that range from startup companies to multi-national, highprofile corporations,” Darlene says. She encourages youth to enter the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest. “Show off your talent and creativity! It’s fun to see your design produced on a tee-shirt.” She adds, “I would like to thank my mom and dad for their endless support and encouragement. Also, I hope that one day the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest will be open to adults!”
Marlene (Migl) Satterwhite is a member of Lodge 88, Houston. She is a senior graphic designer at a marketing and advertising agency in Houston. “I specialize in creative solutions that are engaging and effective, from logo design to multifaceted marketing campaign initiatives,” Marlene states. She thanks SPJST for providing so many opportunities for youth to showcase their talents and ideas.
Scott Hudson, a member of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point, is a freelance graphic designer whose designs are featured in major Texas retailers. “If you like to design or have an interest in the field of art, you should enter,” he says. “It doesn’t matter

Stephanie Vanicek, a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone, is an events administrative assistant with the Hilton in downtown Austin. She also works on commissioned illustration projects for friends and clients. “The SPJST Summer Camp TeeShirt Design Contest is a great opportunity to challenge yourself, whether or not you regularly create artwork,” Stephanie says. “Knowing how to use visuals to communicate ideas is a valuable lifelong skill that is worth exercising.” Stephanie says that it is worthwhile to connect yourself to organizations like Youth and adult chaperones at a 2016 SPJST summer camp pose for a group photo wearing their tee-shirts designed by 2016 contest winner Riley Green of Lodge 9, Snook.

SPJST by participating in its programs. “It adds to the feeling that you are part of a community, and that your skills are valued by others within that community. It’s something special to be part of a group that appreciates creativity and craftsmanship.” She also shares valuable advice for youth: “It can be easy to talk yourself out of entering a contest like this because you’re afraid you won’t win, or you think you aren’t ready for your work to be seen. I still get nervous before starting a new project because I don’t know if it will go as planned or if it will be received well. I remind myself that it is very rare to begin anything knowing that it will end perfectly. When any opportunity comes along, I have found that I regret the times that I have been too scared and attempted nothing, and I am grateful for every time that I have given my best effort and learned from the experience. It is always important to try, because the process and results will guide you and help you grow. You will discover what you enjoy doing and find ways to improve. Whatever the outcome, it is totally worth the time to feel that you have accomplished something, even if it’s just by participating. This competition is a great safe space to try something new for yourself.”
Brooke Hoelscher is a member of Lodge 47, Seaton. She is a communication specialist/graphic designer for the Vestnik/Communication Department at SPJST Home Office. “I want to encourage every youth member to participate,” she says. “No matter what age you are, you can surprise yourself and can create amazing things.”
2012 Brooke Hoelscher Lodge 47, Seaton District Two
Rachel McManus is a member of Lodge 84, Dallas. She recently graduated from the University of Arkansas and is currently working as an accountant at Tyson Foods at the corporate headquarters. She plans to apply to graduate school and begin her studies in the fall of 2017. Rachel encourages youth to get involved. “Put your ideas out there; you never know what might happen,” she says. “Plus, the benefits of participating in all the activities offered by SPJST . . . you may not see how they make a difference in your life now, but they aid in teaching valuable life lessons that will benefit you as you get older.”
Colby Havemann is a member of Lodge 17, New Tabor. After graduating from Texas A&M University, he pursued a job in marketing with American Campus Communities. Shortly after starting the job, he was promoted and he is currently a general manager of a property in Lubbock. “I oversee daily operations and interact with many college students to give them a positive living experience while in college.” Colby encourages everyone to try different things. “SPJST has so many wonderful opportunities for experiences that you cannot get elsewhere,” he says. “I encourage people to go to camp to meet new people. Run for king or queen to practice your communication skills. Participate in YAD to have a sense of achievement. Draw a tee-shirt design to showcase your artistic ability. SPJST was a fundamental part of my childhood and without it, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I know it’s hard to see all the potential it has as a youth member now, but looking back as an adult, it makes me grateful for my time in the youth program.” —SPJST—

2017 Membership Drive Youth Program Incentives
SPJST believes that the values and leadership skills learned early on are important building blocks for life. Thanks to SPJST Youth Clubs, young people in lodges around the state are encouraged to take a greater interest in their community and make good life choices. SPJST Youth Clubs also represent a starting point for youth to learn about becoming and staying active in the affairs of SPJST. For that reason, efforts to grow our local SPJST Youth Clubs are encouraged and share an important role in the 2017 SPJST Membership Drive.

A word about the suffixes –ejší and –eji (ěji):
The suffix –ejší a –ější are adjective endings:
rychlejší, pravidelnější, zdravější.
For adjectives ending in –ký, –eký, –oký, these endings are dropped and –ší is added to the stem so that s and z become š and ž, so:
široký–širší blízký–bližší
and the suffix čí is added in a small group of adjectives so:
leh-ký – lehčí hezký – hezčí měkký – měkčí * * * * *
The suffix –eji and –ěji are the adverb endings:
rychleji pravidelněji zdravěji lehčeji hezčeji měkčeji
Notice, that there is an element of action, or doing in the above words. * * * * *
Compound adverbs are adverbs formed by combining a preposition with a declinable word in its particular case.
