Delisle Doherty announces candidacy for Vice President As I pondered how I would make my announcement as a candidate for the Vice President’s position, I looked at how everyone in the past made their announcement. What I noticed is everyone talked about everything they have done. They talked about their qualifications. Some talked about what SPJST means to them. Many said they would help grow, but only a little was talked about what they were going to do to help grow the organization and how they are going to do it. All this is important so in the end I will talk about my qualifications, but I would like to spend this time talking about how I can help us grow. First, this position is an honor to have. And I will take this honor - if you bestow it upon me - very seriously. This position is responsible to grow the whole fraternal. The Vice President needs to understand this is a Society, not seven different districts and 100 lodges. It is one Society that comprises all of the lodges and districts. It is important to note; since working together, not between borders is very important. I will make sure these borders are taken down, and we all work for the best interest of the Society and help each other, regardless of location. It doesn’t matter if a lodge has 25 or 5,000 members - each should be treated with equal importance, and it doesn’t matter whose district it is in. We are one society in Texas. To do that, it starts with changing the culture of the agents to understand they also work for a fraternal, and it is not just an insurance job. This starts with training. The agents should be trained to talk about the insurance and the member benefits. The fraternal agents will learn how to educate the members. The by-laws state the Vice President must direct and conduct one sales training in every district once a year (article 37 paragraph G). Currently, I do training for District Five and District Six every other month (six times a year). I will continue to carry this throughout the state. I have written over 30 hours of continuing education classes for SPJST that were approved by the Texas Department of Insurance, and an additional 24 hours of sales training classes for my districts. This will allow me to have enough classes, along with enough topics (including understanding fraternal benefits), to give the agents the proper training they need to succeed for SPJST. Of

course, all the training in the world will be of no help if the new members do not become active with the Society. I can help there also. It is important that this position helps create a bridge to transition a person from a client to an active member. I will do this through welcome letters and welcome phone calls. I will make sure every new member understands the benefits of the Society and the community impact they can have by being active with the lodge. This is important to help the lodges grow and continue to be active. There is nothing more calming than a personal welcome to the family. In addition, my background, along with the position, will allow me to give direction to the lodges that would help them grow their membership and set up programs for the public that will bring attention to the local lodges. I will write regular articles in the Vestnik to keep everyone informed and updated . . . not just with insurance news, but with articles that will give tips to how you can grow in your community and additional articles aimed at our youth. Our youth groups are very important to the development and growth of our programs. I have been active with the youth at my church for over 10 years. I have been on nine youth mission trips and two national youth gatherings, and assisted with six Youth Achievement Days with SPJST so I know how to give guidance to our youth. I am a supporter of multiple children’s charities in Houston. I have the background that can help the lodges work towards developing our youth and getting them active in the community.

The last thing is the importance of everyone understanding we have a Czech heritage. I will help educate the agents on the importance of promoting the Czech heritage - while also being sensitive to those who are members - but are not from a Czech background. We need to celebrate the Czech heritage and welcome others into the family - regardless of creed, color or ethnic background. Everyone should be treated with equal importance as a person, with the opportunity to share in the Czech heritage. That is what family is all about. I am not asking for your vote because of anything someone has done or not done. I am asking because I believe my qualifications in business, insurance, and working with membership organizations and the community will allow me to help grow this into the best fraternal in Texas. If you allow me the honor of having this position, I will take this role very seriously and do everything I can to make it the best organization in every community. As promised, below is a list of my qualifications:

Work-Related Experience • Worked in the insurance industry for over 20 years • Write and conduct continuing education classes for the insurance industry

• SPJST Fraternal Field Manager since 2010

• Owned a printing and marketing company until 2010 when I passed it to my son, who currently continues to grow a successful operation

Wednesday, January 27, 2016

• Business consultant for over 20 years • Speaker - I speak to 20 or 30 groups a year on various topics

• Attended 9 youth mission trips and 2 national youth gatherings with my church Positions I Currently Hold or Have Held in the Past • Member of SPJST since 2005

• Officer of Lodge 255, Katy, which is now Lodge 196, Houston-West after the merger

• Founder and current president of the Christian Business Fellowship Association • Past president and consultant for NSTA (National Space/Science Technology Association)

• Past member and special consultant to Texas High Achievers

• Board member and active with several charities for children and veterans in Houston (Katy Rocks, Kick Off 4 Kids, Joe Joe Bear Foundation, Act of Life, Serving Veterans)

• Past church elder and chairman of the board of outreach for my church (Memorial Lutheran Church)

Once again, I would be honored to have your vote, and I will make sure you are proud you voted for me. Fraternally, Delisle Doherty —SPJST—

Jesse Pospisil announces candidacy for District Two Director Dear Members of District Two, It has been a great honor to serve as your director and your representative on the Supreme Lodge of SPJST. I hereby announce my candidacy for reelection to this most very important position. I am sincerely seeking your support and vote at the upcoming 32nd SPJST Convention in June. The past four years were full of financial reports, insurance stats, and charts. As a “new” member on the Supreme Lodge, I was amazed at the details that each officer’s report contained. I have been involved in several property loan evaluations. I am also serving my second year on the internal audit committee for the Supreme Lodge. I feel that I am a better person because of this experience and know that I will learn even more if I am reelected. It is very rewarding to know that I have been a part of the Supreme Lodge of this great organization. SPJST is 119 years old, and I feel it is in a better financial situation than in 2012 when I was elected at the 31st Convention. I know it is due to the commitment and diligence of the officers and directors. The upcoming convention, as all conventions, will have some very important decisions that must be studied and voted upon. Please know that I am available to help you understand the proposed changes so you can be an informed voter. I have been a member of SPJST Praha Lodge 29, Taylor for almost 50 years and served as vice president in the 1970s. This will be my fourth convention as a delegate from Lodge 29, Taylor. I have served on the lodge’s property committee for 12 years and as chairman for the last 10 years. In 2006, I was elected to the board of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum, now called the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. I have also served as its treasurer since July 2006. I retired from Texas Department of Transportation in August 2000 with 34

years of service. I also retired as a Master Sergeant from the United States Army Reserve in April 1996 after serving over 28 years. My wife Linda, of almost 49 years, and I have traveled throughout the district and the state of Texas to more than 350 various functions during my tenure as your director. We have made many new friends and have truly enjoyed all the lodge meetings, youth club activities, picnics, socials, fundraisers, Corpus Christi Getaways, etc. that we have attended. I have presented numerous college scholarships to SPJST high school graduates. I highly support the youth and youth clubs in District Two and feel they are our future and a very important part of this organization. Seeing their talent and leadership skills at YAD impresses me and inspires me to be a better role model. I have been busy as your director, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I feel that these activities are a vital part of my duties as your District Two Director. Again, I ask for your vote and support. Fraternally yours, Jesse Pospisil District Two Director —SPJST—

John Engelke announces candidacy for District Three Director To District Three and All SPJST Members, I would like to announce my candidacy for District Three Director for the 32nd SPJST Convention in Killeen, Texas, on June 12 to 15, 2016. As acting director for District Three since the untimely death of Johnnie Krizan in July 2014, I have had great pleasure in representing District Three and the members of SPJST for the past year and a half. I would greatly appreciate your support at our 2016 Convention with your vote of confidence for the next four year-term as District Three Director. As a member of SPJST for the past 55 years, I have had many memorable moments in Lodge 66, Waco. Having participated in the youth club of our lodge and attending Camp Val Verde, I learned many life lessons that have served me well in my adult life and continued years with SPJST as a lodge officer, District Three officer, and now while serving as District Three Director. With my wife Diana, we have enjoyed 42 years of marriage with our son Justin, daughter-in-law Misha, and granddaughter Mira Cadence. Diana and I met at Linden Hall on December 31, 1971. Since that time, we have been very involved in SPJST through the youth club, adult lodge, District Three camps, and Diana’s time as Assistant District Three Youth Counselor and now as SPJST representative for District Three. To all members, I ask that you speak with your delegates before they attend

the Convention so that your concerns will be represented. As delegates, we represent all the members of SPJST not just those attending the Convention. Please do not come with a closed mind; listen to all sides of the conversation on the Convention floor and make your decisions on what is best for the future of SPJST. If I can be of any future service or you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. To all the members of SPJST, thank you for your great support to all who work with the SPJST from the local lodge officers and members to those who serve in our Home Office as your administrators. Lodge 18, Elgin Hosts New Year’s Eve Dance; Invites All to February Dances Submitted by Irene Vrabel, Reporter

What a great time was had the last day of 2015. Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six provided great dancing music. It was good to see so many friends. We did miss some who were not able to attend. I know age is getting us all. But, our doctor always tells us keep doing what you are doing and so far, we are still dancing. We had many in the upper eighties and some ninety-year-olds attend the dance. We are always told even if we can’t dance as much, good music is uplifting. So forget your aches and pains and join us. Upcoming dances are Sunday, February 14 - Valentine dance with the Dujka Brothers; Sunday, February 21 - Barefoot Becky; and Sunday, February 28 - Glen Collins Band. These are three great dances to come enjoy and get that muchneeded exercise. We look forward to seeing you.

Polka On! at Super Bowl party at Lodge 88 Houston

SqueezeBox, featuring Mollie B and Ted Lange, will get your Super Bowl Sunday off to a good start with a dance from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 7, 2016, at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. Doors open at 11 a.m. Meet and greet Mollie, Ted, and SqueezeBox drummer Dana Lindblad from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The Sauerkraut Food Truck will be on site starting at 11 a.m. with German and American football food fare. Part of the proceeds from the dance and silent auction, sponsored by Texas Polka News, will benefit the International Polka Association Hall of Fame. The International Polka Association, based in Chicago, is a non-profit organization whose purpose is the advancement of polka music. The IPA recently announced the appointment of Danny Zapletal of Ennis to its Hall of Fame and Music Awards Board of Trustees to represent the Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico region. Since the IPA was formed in 1968, eleven trustees have governed the processes that select Hall of Fame (HOF) inductees and recognize polka artists with awards. Each trustee oversees 14 electors chosen to represent a given geographic area of the United States and Canada. The electors participate in the annual voting that elects HOF inductees and music award winners. “To better serve a large portion of the United States and its diversity of polka styles, the Executive Board recently moved to establish a new trustee position to represent Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico,” said IPA President Rick Rzeszutko. “Texas,

especially, is a hotbed of polka activity, and we want to have representation from that area.” Danny Z is an Ennis, Texas, native and SPJST Lodge 25 member, who has been involved with the Ennis National Polka Festival since he was a kid. His father, Ray Zapletal, was one of the founders of the fest, which will be celebrating its 50th year on Memorial Day Weekend in 2016. Danny was appointed vice president in 1992, president in 1993, and has served as the festival’s executive director since 2000. He is the host of two polka shows – KBEC Polka Party (Texas) and Czech Polka/Texas Czech Polka on WRJQ (Wisconsin). As a trumpet player, Danny joined Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen in 1980, and played with the band for 18 years. He helped form the band Czech and Then Some in 1997 and continues today as the leader. He also owns a recording studio where most of the polka bands from northern Texas record. “This is truly an honor to be chosen as a trustee. It’s one more way for us to keep our polka music and heritages alive and strong,” Danny said. Danny has wasted no time in showing the IPA how serious we are about polka in Texas. Working with Mollie B, Ted, and Texas Polka News Publisher Theresa Cernoch Parker, he has coordinated the first Texas fundraiser for the IPA Hall of Fame. “Come out and learn about the IPA and its Hall of Fame, become a member, and help polka music stay alive and well!” Danny said. “The Texas Polka News is proud to sponsor this IPA fundraiser, and very excited to see a Texan appointed to the IPA Hall of Fame board,” said Theresa, who is also a member of SPJST Lodge 88. “Alfred Vrazel was the first Texan inducted into the IPA Hall of Fame in 2014 for his work as a polka DJ for 60 years, and we look forward to seeing more polka artists from this region nominated for induction and for the music awards,” she said. Super Bowl Polka Party tickets are $12 in advance through the SqueezeBox website (squeezeboxband.com) and $15 at the door. Children ages 12 and under are admitted free. Reserved seating is available for those who purchase tickets in advance. Contact the Texas Polka News at 281-836-5362 or theresa@polkabeat.com. We have missed Alicia and hopefully she will be able to start coming to our meetings again. Tracy Horn was missed as she is having cataract sur-

Rose Ann said he is getting better each day. Libbie Vrla reported on the death of Merel Kovar on January 2. Merel was a longtime member and secretary of the Friendship Club. She retired from her secretarial duties in February 2000. She always ended her minutes with the phrase, “A good time was had

by all.” I always liked this phrase so asked her if I could use it in my Vestnik articles. As some of you know, I also use Mary Pavey’s closing of “So Until, Keep Smiling.” It made Mary happy that I was using her closing when I took over as reporter when she moved to live with her niece. Back to Merel . . . when Merel moved to an assisted living home, which was not far from me, I used to pick her up for Friendship Club as it was on my way. I always enjoyed her talking about her

husband, Frank. They used to go to dances at Lodge 92, Fort Worth and Sokol. They met while both were working for Montgomery Ward. We all signed a sympathy card to send to Merel’s sister, Melba Brown. Merel’s funeral service was at St. Barbara’s Orthodox Church. I did recognize some of the Catholic prayers and from my trip to Russia. In visiting their Orthodox Churches, I remembered that everyone stands during the service which usually is two hours long as per our guide. They make the sign of the cross like the Catholics except they go to the right side first and then to the left. The priests (they call themselves “priests”) wear vestments like our priests, but they do have lots more icons in their churches. It was very interesting. They did have a few chairs on each side for the non-orthodox folks to sit on and, yes, the service was two hours long. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to January celebrants - Betty Landsfeld, Lois Smith, and Darlene Tompkins. May you all have many more. Lola stated we will have a speaker from the Nature Center in February. This should be enjoyable so remind everyone to attend. Lola suggested that each person should invite a friend or guest to come to one of our meetings. Lola also asked that everyone

should think about doing something fun – she said she would love to teach us how to dance the tango! She also asked that we decorate our table in the Valentine theme for our February meeting. The color for February is red or pink. Door prizes were donated by Helen Skrasek (2) and Paula Arsenault (2). Thanks, ladies! Happy winners were Betty Krenek, Lorraine Cross, Marilyn Llewellyn, and Pat McWilliams. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Lorraine Cross and Shirley Martin. Congratulations! This was a lucky day for Lorraine. Hostesses for the day were Lupe Esparza, Marie Keller, and Darlene Tompkins, but I also saw Betty and Stanley Krenek and Carolyn Irby in the kitchen helping out. Thanks to all of you for doing a great job. Hostesses for February will be Shirley Martin and Anna Marie Moncrief; I am sure they will have lots of helpers. Lola did a great job as acting president. Thanks! Following the meeting, grace was said; a great fried chicken lunch with all the many varied side dishes was enjoyed; and games were played. A good time was had by all. The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 3. Don’t forget to bring Valentine decorations for your table and a food dish to share.

News Today, I spoke with Margaret Sears, and she stated her husband is doing better each day. He is home from the hospital. Get well soon! Betty Landsfeld celebrated her 92nd birthday on January 13. I went over to wish her a happy birthday, and she was having a really good day. She said that her son Steve, Rose Ann Spann, daughter Betty, and husband

Stanley had all stopped by. Her caregiver was there then the nurse called and said she was coming. So I didn’t get to stay and visit very long. Betty keeps up with all the folks from Ennis and told me about the phone visit from Joe Klecka of Dallas recently - and how much she enjoyed it. Betty and Joe grew up on the farms next to each other in Ennis. I just have to write about a senior citizen field trip I went on lately. Jerry and Henrietta Milan, Darrell and Gay Williams, Keyna Harris of Maypearl (we picked Keyna up on the way), and I went to Temple to tour the Czech Heritage Museum. Lesli Milan was our driver and her daughter Talia came along. We had lunch in the sandwich shop at the Museum. Kenny gave us a very good tour and explained everything. We had one great time! As Gay and Henrietta said, we need to plan another senior citizen field trip as this one was such fun. Lesli, thanks for being the driver. You did a great job, and it was nice to have Talia with us. Of course, coming back, we made a stop at Village Bakery in West. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

VĚSTNÍK

The January meeting of the Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth took place on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, with 49 present including visitors and men. Theresa Clay’s granddaughter, Amanda was visiting before heading back to school, and Linda Palmer came as a visitor and left with a membership. We were happy to have the two of them join us. President Cathy Simmank led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and Vice President Theretta Praslicka read “Take Time to Live” as she has done each year for a very long time. Business proceeded as usual with Sunshine Chairman Marlene Bass reporting on our missing members. We ask that you let one of us know if you are under the weather and in need of prayers, cards, and/or phone calls. As I was putting together the notes of the January Ladies Circle meeting, something hit me that I never realized before. Our members really outdid themselves in 2015. They are small in number, but do mighty work. They really make a difference in the community. The focus of the meeting this month centered around our service work - past and future. Most often, we make cash donations in January instead of at the end of the year. We voted to donate money to SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth in the amount of $500. Meals on Wheels will receive $250, and Safe Haven for Women will receive $250. Gloria Farek, who

passed away last January, was a collector of items that she donated to various non-profit organizations. We decided to carry on her legacy after her passing and continue collecting items for her favorite charities. We call these Gloria’s Gifts. This past year, there were 237 points for Labels for Education; 126 Coca-Cola bottle caps delivered to St. Andrews School; 320 Box Tops for Education for Our Lady of Victory Catholic School; and 10 gallons of can tabs for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Cancer Research. St. Jude’s no longer accepts the can tabs and suggested that they be donated to Ronald McDonald House. So that is where they will now go. We also collected over 99 pounds of food for Tarrant Area Food Bank and enough school supplies that took two trips to get them to Castleberry Elementary. Once again, I personally did not realize how active we are and how much was accomplished. On top of just being glad to see each other each month, these efforts are just awesome. In 2016, we will continue collecting Gloria’s Gifts, as well as start accumulating “Pennies for Education” for SPJST. And come next January, we’ll decide who we can help again in some way. Birthday celebrants were recognized, sung to, and asked to tell a little about themselves. Most everyone got

The Grinch Visits SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville

Play Presented by Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Members and Guests • Theater Producer Becca Bosley Every one down in Beyersville liked Christmas a lot. But the Grinch who lived just north of Beyersville did not!

He hadn’t stopped Christmas from coming! It came! Somehow or other, it came just the same!

The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! Now, please don’t ask why, no one quite knows the reason.

They stood close together, with Christmas bells ringing. They stood hand-in-hand, and those members started singing!

Then he got an idea! An awful idea! The Grinch got a wonderful, awful idea!

“I know just what to do!” The Grinch laughed in his throat. “I’ll make a quick Santy Clause hat and a coat.” Then he slid down the chimney, a rather tight pinch. But if Santa could do it, then so could the Grinch.

Packed it up with their presents, their ribbons, their wrappings, Their cell-phones, their X-boxes, and even stocking scrappings!

Ten thousand feet up, up the side of Mount Crumpet He rode with his load to the tiptop to dump it. “Wait, that’s a noise,” grinned the Grinch, “that I simply must hear!” He paused, and the Grinch put a hand to his ear.

And the Grinch, with his grinch feet ice cold in the snow, Stood puzzled and puzzled. “How could it be so?”

“Maybe Christmas,” he thought, doesn’t come from a store. “Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more!” And what happened then? Well, in Beyersville they say That the Grinch’s small heart grew three sizes that day!

Sooo then the true meaning of Christmas came through And the Grinch found the strength of ten Grinches, plus two!

He brought everything back, all the food for the feast!

And he, yes, he himself, the Grinch, carved the roast beast!

But this sound wasn’t sad! Why, this sound sounded glad!

Every one down in Beyersville, the tall and the small Were singing without any presents at all!

Welcome Christmas while we stand, Heart to Heart and hand in hand.

French Avenue in Temple, Texas. “Museum visitors kept telling me that, although Czech was their first language, they were losing it because there was no place to use it,” said Susan Chandler, museum director. “I wanted to provide a place for that.” Temple and its surrounding communities are home to one of the largest enclaves of ethnic Czechs in the United States. Most of these are the children or grandchildren of immigrants who came from the Moravia region of the Czech Republic at the turn

of the last century. “The unique Moravian dialect is endangered,” said Chandler. “It has been preserved here in Texas better than in Europe, so Czech linguists have an interest in it. I feel that our museum has a calling to preserve living culture as well as artifacts, so I wanted to create a way to do that.” The social hour will follow a structured format that changes every 15 minutes, but it is not a class and there will not be homework. “Each social time will be a stand-alone activity, so

if you miss a week, you won’t have to catch up,” said Chandler. “Czechlish – any combination of Czech and English – will be encouraged. You have to start somewhere and we learn best by just plunging in and trying to communicate.” “We have a wonderful volunteer committee, led by Betty Marek and Janet Young, who will coordinate the logistics, but members will take turns bringing the subject matter to discuss,” said Chandler. “Svacina Time!” is open to all ages

monthly Czech language social hour, 2 to 3 p.m. Social hour will follow a structured format that changes every 15 minutes. This is not a class - no homework.
