VĚSTNÍK

Next week’s February 24 Vest-

nik will not be a regular issue. It will feature all of the 2015 incentive program winners and everyone who was honored at the SPJST Awards Banquet. This will be printed in lieu of a regular Vestnik issue. “We Will Remember” Fort Hood Memorial To Be Dedicated on March 11 The City of Killeen and the 5 November, 2009 Memorial Committee shared a very special invitation to SPJST members (see page 1). The 5 November, 2009 Fort Hood Memorial at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center will be dedicated in a formal ceremony on Friday, March 11 at 3 p.m. The memorial is located at 3601 South WS Young Drive in Killeen, Texas. SPJST lodges raised more than $100,000 for the project, and these combined SPJST donations are the largest contribution to the project. The memorial came about through an idea from past Fraternal Field Manager Hiram Dixon. He took the idea to his supervisor Gene McBride who then shared the idea with Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. SPJST representatives then met with City of Killeen representatives and . . . the rest is history. What a beautiful, lasting tribute this will be to those who gave their lives on that VESTNIK

cold November day. SPJST members are invited and encouraged to attend the formal ceremony and dedication of the Memorial on Friday, March 11 at 3 p.m.

In Loving Memory Just as we were putting this week’s issue to bed, we received phone call with very sad news that our beloved District Three Publication Committee member Bessie Petr of Lodge 84, Dallas passed away early this morning (February 12). Sister Bessie has devoted her life to SPJST and has served in many roles - lodge officer, youth leader, sales agent, District Youth Counselor, convention delegate, Publication Committee member. Her leadership has touched many lives for several generations on all levels - local lodge, district, and state. Her legacy in SPJST will live on through those she impacted. As of Vestnik press time, services were still pending.

Correction The photo of President Vanicek, Maxine Sefcik, and me in my editorial on February 3 should say “Representing 46 years of Vestnik leadership” - instead of 16 years. Thanks to those who called in about the error. I guess my fingers got a little carried away, and I typed a “1” instead of a “4”! —SPJST—

Hiram Dixon announces candidacy for Vice President Dear Members, I would like to announce my candidacy for the office of Vice President for SPJST in the upcoming convention in June 2016. I know the office of Vice President requires an extensive knowledge of the life insurance industry. I have over 35 years of life insurance experience. It requires staying abreast of all applicable state and national laws. I will work diligently to keep myself, our agents, and SPJST in compliance with the insurance laws. It requires leadership form the top down. I have worked as a leader in our society as a Fraternal Field Representative for over seven years until I retired in November 2014. Retirement is boring! The office of the Vice President requires strong communication with all officers and directors, but most importantly, to and from our agents. It requires a Vice President that can and will work in the field with our managers, agents, and for our members. I greatly enjoyed working in the field for our members with agents and will continue to do so, if elected. These are but a few of the things required of the Vice President, and I will devote all of my energy and time to accomplish all things required to help SPJST grow. I believe we must look at the distribution system we use in getting our product (life insurance, annuities and fraternalism) to the market place so that we can garner our fair share of the market. We must continue to have career fraternal agents that work for SPJST in our lodges helping to meet the needs of our existing members. We need to reward and compensate those fraternal agents in a manner that would be conducive for continued growth of our lodges. I believe in order to grow our company, our lodges, and the membership of SPJST, we need to expand our efforts through technical avenues and the recruiting of qualified sales agents. I feel that we must set up webinar training programs for our existing agents and make it mandatory for new agents to train them on the way of SPJST. We are not like any other insurance company—we are unique and much better because we have the added value of fraternalism. I know that it is imperative that we have complete and open communications with our members, agents, and managers. I will set in place techniques that will ensure that all communica-

tions are answered in a timely manner. It is essential that we increase the membership of SPJST, and we can do that through encouragement of our sales agents. Motivation to successfully complete a task comes from within oneself, and the best thing a manager can do is create an environment that is conducive for an agent to have the desire to be successful. I will create that environment. As to my qualifications to be Vice President, I have been a member of SPJST since July 2007 and hold the proper life insurance license issued by the State of Texas. I have designations of Life Underwriters Training Council Fellow (LUTCF), Fraternal Insurance Council Fellow (FICF), and Certified Fraternal Field Manager (CFFM). I am currently a member of SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington. I have served as secretary/treasurer, vice president, and president of Lodge 87, Temple. I have set up and conducted training classes for Districts One, Two, Three, Five, Six, and Seven. I have revamped and improved continuing education classes for SPJST agents. I have worked as a State Field Representative/Fraternal Field Manager in several districts. Thank you for taking the time to read this announcement, and I kindly ask for your support at the upcoming convention. I would be honored to serve as Vice President of SPJST. If you would like to visit with me at any time, please feel free to call me at 254-231-7722 or email at hadixon2003@yahoo.com. Fraternally, Hiram Dixon LUTCF, FICF, CFFM —SPJST—

Mark Childres announces candidacy for District Five Director It is with great honor and appreciation that I have the opportunity to run for District Five Director of SPJST. Ladies and Gentlemen of District Five, my name is Mark Childres, and I would be honored to serve as your director of this great district. I have people ask me why are you involved with SPJST? What is SPJST all about? My answer is simple, our youth. Nothing is more important than raising our children to be meaningful members of society and helping our members prepare for their future. In today’s society, so many children are not raised in a healthy home environment. SPJST is working very hard to change this trend by developing family activities that enrich quality time with family and friends. I have been a business owner for the last 12 years helping people with their health, medicare, and life insurance needs. There is not one insurance policy or certificate that meets everyone needs. You must be a good listener to be able to enroll members in the right SPJST Life Insurance product the first time. One of my goals will be working on increasing our youth participation in SPJST and adding more youth clubs. Lodge 196, Houston-West has decided to start a youth club and is currently working on achieving this goal. We must continue to add younger members to SPJST so we can continue to grow and offset the ongoing challenge fraternals face of declining membership. Another one of my goals is to help District Five and all SPJST sales agents increase our life insurance sales. I will accomplish this by educating our sales agents on promoting the valuable fraternal benefits that are included with SPJST Life Insurance products. I believe that we can all do a better job of promoting our fraternal benefits, which will increase our life insurance sales and increase our membership. I did not grow up with SPJST, but as the saying goes, I got here as fast as I could. I have been a member since 2011, actively supporting Lodge 196. My first year at Lodge 196, I was the vice president. Starting in 2012 until present, I have been president of Lodge 196. In order to help people solve their needs, it takes a good listener, which is one of my strongest assets. I have been a problem solver, both in the corporate world as a business owner, and in my

personal life. I believe my insurance background totaling 15 years and working with people to help them grow as a person will be very beneficial for District Five. I believe these are qualities one needs to help a company grow, and that is what I can bring to SPJST. I am known as a problem solver and a diplomat. I will be open-minded to hearing all information available towards making my decision in the best interest of SPJST. I have dealt with all types of personalities and egos, and this has helped me become successful in business and in life. My past experience includes 16 years of management experience including area manager of an 11-office operation in Houston and San Antonio, managing all 60 employees. These 11 offices were set up as separate profit centers. I taught these employees how to run a profitable operation, which allowed them to grow in the company, receive promotions, and their efforts allowed them to increase their production and income. I also have a background in the oilfield industry, radio, and music. I have been married to my lovely wife Lester for 32 years. She has been very supportive in helping me with my SPJST responsibilities. Although we do not have children, if we did, they would be active with SPJST as well. I am a graduate of Sam Houston State University Class of 1981. SPJST accomplishments are State Career Top Agent - Insurance Issued in 2012, District Five Career Top Agent Certificates Issued and Insurance Issued in 2012, District Five Top Career Agent - Most Insurance Issued and Highest Earned Premium in 2013, and Million Dollar Producer in 2012 and

2013. I enjoy working with people and making them feel good about themselves and their future. In closing, we need to recruit more young people to help carry on the SPJST tradition. This will be done in part through our current youth and their parents inviting their friends to SPJST activities, so they too can see what the wonderful SPJST Society is all about. We are here for the good of our chil-

dren and supporting our community. SPJST provides a wholesome environment that makes you feel good about supporting SPJST. Again, I would be honored to serve as your District Five Director and ask for your support. I truly believe together we can make a substantial difference. Fraternally, Mark Childres —SPJST—

STATE OF TEXAS

COUNTY OF BELL

BE IT REMEMBERED that at a regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the SPJST, held at its regular place of meeting at Temple, Texas, on the 20th day of January, 2016, at which meeting a quorum was present and voting, the following Resolution was adopted:

RESOLVED: That the SPJST, a Fraternal Life Insurance Society (1) believes that the insurance business is affected with a public interest and is dependent upon public confidence, and (2) expects employees, officers and directors to conduct their personal financial interests and affairs so as to avoid placing such interests in conflict, direct or indirect, with those of the Company and to avoid conduct which might impair their judgment with respect to the business of the Society. The following are regarded as illustrative of the principal situations where such conflict may be involved:

1. Financial Interest Employees, officers, directors or members of their families having a material interest in any corporation or incorporated enterprise which sells goods or services to, buys from, competes with the Society in the sale of insurance, or borrows from the Company and who are in a position to influence any decision by the Society with respect to such transactions.

2. Inside Information Employees, officers, or directors directly or indirectly using or divulging inside confidential information with respect to the Society for the purpose of securing personal profit or advantage for themselves or others or in a manner prejudicial to the interest of the Society.

3. Gratuities and Entertainment The receipts of loans, gifts, gratuities, entertainment and favors of more than nominal value by employees, officers, directors or members of their families, either directly or indirectly, that may influence any decision with respect to the Society.

While the above are illustrative of ways in which conflict may arise, the entire subject is so far-reaching and the interrelationships possible within the insurance business so complex that the avoidance of conflict rest basically upon each individual’s ethical standards, integrity and judgment. Annually, on or about the time of the January Board meeting, a request will be made of all directors, officers and responsible employees to state in writing any activities which conflict with the policy. The statement will be as stated on the attached Exhibit “A”.

However, if any officer, director, or responsible employee at any time believes he may be engaged in activities described, he should immediately report such activities to the President.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the President, Brian Vanicek, and the Secretary-Treasurer, Leonard Mikeska, of SPJST, be and they are hereby directed to execute in the name of and on behalf of SPJST, the Statement of Policy concerning Conflict of Interest. ____________________________________ Brian Vanicek, President

Lodge 48 Beyersville youth: a soon-to-be teenager

My birthday is in two months March 26, 2016. I am going to be 13. I think turning 13 is a big deal. Maturity and responsibility are expected of you when you turn 13. You get to do things that you couldn’t when you were younger. When you are 13, you get treated as an adult, a young adult because you aren’t a real adult yet. I can’t wait to be a teenager because I can be an LIT. I mean, it’s gonna be hard keeping track of kids (and waking up early). But in the end, it all pays off knowing that you made the younger kids happy and have fun. Sincerely, Alyssa Nira —SPJST—

He was born on September 4, 1922, in Hallettsville to Joe and Annie Sralla who moved to Needville with their family when Lester was seven years old. At age 16, Lester joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), also known as “The Tree Army,” where he fought forest fires and built roads through the East Texas Piney Lester Sralla, Sr. Woods. At age 20, Lester joined the United States Navy. He served his country in World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in the South Pacific aboard the USS Tennessee Battleship. Lester received the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, The Philippine Liberation Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Campaign Ribbon with seven Bronze Stars, the American Campaign Medal, the Victory World War II Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Lester was honorably discharged in 1945. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 350. After his military service, Lester was first employed by Dow Chemical. Then he worked for Fort Bend County Precinct II, where he retired after 38 years as a heavy equipment operator. Lester was a dedicated and faithful member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Needville. He loved fishing on the Brazos River and working in his yard and vegetable garden. Lester was a devoted husband, father, and grandparent. He started each day by praying, “God give me wisdom today.” Needless to say, he was incredibly wise, and was loved and respected by everyone. He was a member of Lodge 28, East Bernard for over 60 years. Lester was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Annie Sralla; brother Alvin “Hap” Sralla; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters in law. He is survived by his wonderful, loving wife of 63 years Rosalie Sabrsula Sralla; children Lester Sralla, Jr. and wife Joyce, Kathryn Morrison and husband Robert, and

Connie Teykl and husband Craig; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends and family were invited to a visitation from 12:30 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m., on Monday, December 21 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Needville. Burial with military honors followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Needville or to American Cancer Society.

Pak přišla výborná večeře opět tradičně vařená rodinou Šuláků a všichni návštěvníci si pochutnali. Mezi vzácnými návštěvníky byli i Brian Vaníček s manželkou, president naší jednoty, Melanie Závodný s manželem, redaktroka našeho tiskového orgánu Věstníku, a president 3. okrsku John Klinkovskýs manželkou. Po večeři přišlo k losování výher. Skoro každý vyhrál malou hotovost,

Mladí tanečníci zatančili velmi svižnou polku a další tance.

Při rozdávání dárků se udělala velká řada, malé děvčáko si lehlo na podlahu.
