Lodge 180, Burleson Donation Completes Johnnie Krizan Scholarship Endowment

Edwin Zimmerhanzel installs a new sign in front of SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar hall after many renovations have been completed on the historical hall during the past recent years. See photos and information on page 16.

Members of SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson traveled to Temple on Friday, March 4, 2016, to tour the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center at 119 West French in Temple. In conjunction with the visit, lodge members presented a check for $2,000 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund, directing the funds to support the Johnnie Krizan Endowed Scholarship. With this gift, the Johnnie Krizan Scholarship is now fully endowed and will be awarded each year to a deserving young SPJST scholar. By definition, an endowed scholarship is one in which the principle remains intact and only the interest is awarded each year. Joining in the presentation, from left, are Lodge 180 Fraternal Activities Coordinator Leon Flusche, Lodge 180 Secretary Rhonda Hurtik, First Vice President Joe Hurtik, SPJST President Brian Vanicek, Lodge 180 Burleson President Bill Slavik, Treasurer Carole Slavik, Second Vice President Ernest “Red” Kelly, Jr. and Lodge 180 Reporter Nancy Kelly. Note: SPJST extends its sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Sister Carole Slavik, who passed away on March 9.

From the Insurance Department

Insurance strategy exceeds expectations

SPJST sales are showing strong gains in 2016. We are excited to see a great increase over our 2015 sales. First, we have a 30 percent increase in certificates issued. Second, we have a 67 percent increase in insurance outstanding. The dollar amount of new insurance increased from $5.59 million in 2015 to $9.34 million in the first two months of 2016. Third, and very important, earned premium has increased by 31 percent

over the same period compared to the previous year. Our hats are off to the great SPJST sales agents for their outstanding work. The numbers reflect our membership’s continued dedication to SPJST. By focusing our strategy on internal and external growth, we are continuing to help current and future members get good quality life insurance at a reasonable rate. This income then lets us benefit our members individually, the lodges, and our communities. Thank you for making a difference for SPJST. Clifton Coufal Vice President —SPJST—

Opportunity Knocks - Go For It!

SPJST is offering a wonderful opportunity to advance and enhance your career. On April 11, 12, and 13, 2016, there will be a three-day class at the SPJST Home Office that will prepare you to pass an exam to be a licensed life insurance agent. You will receive all of the help you will need to pass the exam, including an up-to-date textbook and CD for home study. The author of the textbook will be your teacher, Dr. B. J. Sims, an experienced instructor whose success rate for first-time test-takers has been a phenomenal 98 percent. Ask yourself, what is in it for me? First, it will help you get a better un-

derstanding of life insurance products. Second, it will provide increased income opportunities as you share SPJST with others. Third, it will give you the satisfaction of helping families solve their insurance problems and ensure their families have peace of mind. The cost for all three days is only $125. If you then become an SPJST agent (or are one already) and write at least 10 applications between April 13 and December 31, SPJST will reimburse you the cost of the class. Please contact the SPJST Home Office at 254-773-1575 by March 31 if you would like to attend. —SPJST—

Board of Directors

SPJST Education and Nature Center Dear Members, It is with great sadness that we announce that we will be losing one of the main visionaries of SPJST Education and Nature Center—John Hoelscher. John has received an opportunity that is outstanding for him and his family. John has been a very integral part of ENC from the beginning, and it is with John’s and many others’ tireless efforts that we have gone from a dream to a full blown camp serving not only SPJST, but also FFA groups, KJT, KJZT, Victoria Archdiocese along with numerous other programs that have returned year after year. It is through John’s dedication and love for the ENC that he has built the ENC to where it is today. We can’t thank John, Lisa, Michael, Emma, and Abby enough for the way they have served and represented the ENC. John, you will be missed not only at ENC, but in the Ledbetter, Texas, community. Thank you for your dedication and service to SPJST Education and Nature Center. We were truly blessed to have you as a part of this program. Best of luck. May God bless the Hoelscher family in their new journey. Fraternally,

Visit to Temple Our trip to Temple was hosted by Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, SPJST Foundation Director of Development James Lee, III, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak, and Czech Heritage Museum Executive Director Susan Chandler. Susan conveyed with clarity all of the makings and developments that took place in our prior history so that we can understand and have a picture before us of what our forefathers endured and sacrificed prior to our existence. I would like to recommend that you take a tour into your prior history by

taking a visit to the Museum and seeing some of your heritage before your eyes. You might not be of Czech descent, but you can find out how your ancestry fits into this picture. Prior to our departure from the Museum, Lodge 180 presented a check to President Brian Vanicek in the amount of $2,000 to be utilized for the Johnnie R. Krizan Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Save the Dates Our next monthly meeting will Tuesday, April 5 at Spring Creek Barbecue in Burleson and the following month’s meeting will be Tuesday, May 3 will also be held at the Spring Creek Barbecue in Burleson. Please mark these dates on your calendars as we are looking forward to seeing you there. Brian Vanicek and James Lee, III will join us at our next meeting in April. Lodge 191, Lufkin shares March news

I apologize for not getting the news out last month, but George and I were gone for almost a month. We had a good trip, but we’re glad to be home; there is no place like it. I hate to start on sad news, but we have lost two of our beloved members of the lodge just recently. The first one was Frank Juarez who passed away on February 2, 2016. He was a charter member of the lodge, and he and Delores were very active in the running of the lodge for many years. Please remember Delores and their family in your prayers. The second one is Coleman Standley who passed away Thursday, March 3. He and Linda loved to dance and made most of the dances at SPJST. Please remember Linda and their family in your prayers. Both of these men will be greatly missed. Nathan Ham and the Country Boys performed for the February dance. Everyone had a great Mardi Gras time. The hosts and hostesses for the dance were Bernard and Kathryn Hylands and Dick and Geraldine Pike. They also did all of the decorations with help from Kathy Riley. Food was great! The winner of the 50-50 drawing was Shelia Balash, and the free dance tickets went to AC Riley and Susie Ikner. Congratulations to all of these winners! Lodge 38, Kovar Renovates Historical Hall

Members of Lodge 38, Kovar have been in the process of renovating our historical hall for a number of years. In 2008, we had a new roof installed on the hall. Then in 2009, the work began in earnest. First, the old wooden porch was removed and replaced with a new concrete porch. Next, the original siding was replaced with hardy board to closely match the

original. Since nearly all the work was done by volunteers, it took some time to get all this work done. In 2015, we finally had the completed hall painted. For the final step in this exterior restoration, we have installed new signs on the hall and at the intersection of Highway South and Stolle Lane. We wish to thank District One Director Donnie Victorick for

his invaluable assistance in helping us obtain these signs. He and Janice go above and beyond! Fraternally, Officers and Members of SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar —SPJST—

In Memory of Elsie Zimmerhanzel

Elsie Kruppa Zimmerhanzel passed away peacefully on February 2, 2016. She was born 104 years ago at Ford’s Prairie in south-west Fayette County to Frank John Kruppa and Annie Adamcik. She was the sixth of their eight children. She lived her entire life within 10 miles of her birthplace. She was united in marriage with E. Zimmerhanzel Edward Frank Zimmerhanzel on November 4, 1935. They shared 51 years together until his death in 1986. Also preceding her in death were her parents; all her siblings; son John; and grandson Edwin Zimmerhanzel, Jr. Elsie is survived by son Edwin Frank (Donna); daughter Mary Ann Kallus (Marcus); daughter-in-law Mary Ann Zimmerhanzel; grandchildren Dana Bunte (Bert), Laura Frerich (Ronnie), Mark Zimmerhanzel (Beth), and Melissa Stroud (Steve); greatgrandchildren Chrissy Depine (Mark), Candace Clark (Ryan), Ashley Swinney (Michael), Edwin Zimmerhanzel, III (Kara), Darren Bunte, Joshua Zimmerhanzel (Nikki), Kelsie Frerich, Kacie Frerich, and Sean Perry (Niki); and great-great-grandchildren Zachary Kirby, Lane Depine, Emily Depine, Averie Zimmerhanzel, Rylee Clark, Easton Zimmerhanzel, Bentley Swinney, Tricia Perry, Nathan Perry, and Trevan Perry. Elsie was an amazing woman. She was active all her long life. Her last driver’s license expired on her 100th birthday. Her memory was unbelievable. She was a devout Catholic, attending church every Sunday of her life. She loved her family and hosted huge family dinners regularly until she was 90 years old. She made the best

chicken noodle soup, and her kolaches were fantastic. All her family looked forward to her poppyseed rolls and strudels. When she decided to move to the Towers shortly before her 99th birthday, she embraced the place wholeheartedly. She loved it there because there was always something going on, and she was never bored. If there was nothing else to do, she would be found doing word search puzzles or playing

An SPJST Connection!

You never know who you will run into! While on my way back from a Lodge 88, Houston visit, I stopped at Texas Seafood and Steak House in Somerville. That’s where I ran into Morgan Sebesta! Morgan is a Leader-InTraining (LIT) and youth member at Lodge 9, Snook. It’s so much fun to see these young people growing up - but not as much fun to realize that that means I’m getting older. Great to see you, Morgan, and I hope to see you again soon! —Lynette Talasek State Youth Director

Hi! Just want to thank my Lee Lee who is the District Six Youth Counselor. She held our officer training yesterday - March 6, 2016. She went over how to be a better officer, the duties of being a youth club officer, and so much more. The best part was she gave us door prizes, and I got an SPJST flashlight. I will take it to camp. We also had ice cream floats. Grant Bubela —SPJST—

Czech School of Dallas invites all to annual Kraslice workshop

V pořadí již 3. Velikonoční dílna proběhne v budově dallaského Sokola v neděli 20. března, od 10 hodin ráno. Přineste si výdutky, či celá vejce, naučíme vás jak na jejich vyfouknutí. Budeme mít včelí vosk, speciální náčiní i barvy. Doporučuji vejce z domácího chovu a pokud možno hnědá, protože lépe chytají barvu a nejsou tak křehká. Budu opět ukazovat techniku malování včelím voskem a letos přidáme ještě barevné voskovky. Nina Marcussen

TCGS offers Easter egg ornaments The third annual Easter egg workshop will be held Sunday, March 20, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sokol Dallas building, 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas. Bring your own emptied egg shell. If you don’t know how to do it, don’t worry - we will show you how - just bring as many eggs as you need. I recommend you bring eggs from free range/local farmer chickens. Brown eggs absorb dye better, and their shell is sturdier. We will have bees wax, special tools, and dyes. I will demonstrate bees wax batique technique, and this year, we will also use wax crayon technique. There will be three instructional showcases during the day: 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. We will have non-toxic dyes for children. Please wear an outfit that will allow you to get messy while working with wax and dyes. This is a potluck so feel free to bring a plate to share. We will have water and iced tea. Please RSVP with the number of people in your party to allow us to plan better. Send an email to czechschoolofdallas@yahoo.com. I look forward to seeing you here again! The egg is a symbol of eternal life and future hope. Throughout history, eggs have been eaten and also decorated for gifts to celebrate the miracle of life and spiritual renewal. Traditions, evolving from the egg, have been carried on by Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Italians, Mexicans, Finns, Hungarians, Irish, Germans, Belgians, and French, as well as by the Czechoslovaks. Many of the traditions are still observed and practiced today, especially in the villages.

the home of Anastazie Hosek in Houston. Like warrior harpies, unabashed they took for their meal a mother most fair in the prime of her life. In the morning of a poetically beautiful autumn day the generous heart of a faithful and honest woman quit beating; a loyal heart devoted to her family and her people. She was not brought into a prosaic life but instead a life full of gloom and worry during the beginning of her life. She did not shirk the difficult Texas farm work while raising her children; from her youth she was instilled with noble principles that caused her heart to overflow. She joined with her husband, Tom, to build a carefree life for their family. She was an able helper to him both on the farm and at their business. They lived together in mythical spirit surrounded by the love for their children. Alas, into this chalice of love there fell a drop of bitter wormwood. Having reached the fulfillment of their desires, a secure home, she was torn from the family circle by the harsh intervention of relentless fate. I remember in admiration her unpretentious work in the lodge environ-

ment; admired her ardent love for the old country. Her direct, down-to-earth leadership gained her the respect and friendship of all those with whom she came into contact. She helped all who needed her help. Her generous hands didn’t close for anyone. If Providence rewards honesty with eternal peace, surely the grave of sister Hosek will be abloom with flowers cradling her in her eternal dream with their intoxicating scent. Assuredly even a bird will fly to her grave, on silken wing, and sing her a song of love and of happiness and bring impassioned greetings from all the neighborhoods of Houston who wholeheartedly loved her and will always remember her. Happy easter Veselé Velikonoce

In the years before 1989 when Czechoslovakia became a free country again, the meaning of Easter (Velikonoce — from Veliké noci or Great Nights) was limited to the welcoming of spring. The religious connotations of Easter were suppressed under the communist regime. Nowadays, people are again aware of the religious origin of Easter, but Easter has not become a serious religious holiday. Easter in the Czech Republic is a fun time. Many traditions are still observed and practiced, especially in villages, and different regions may have their own traditions and customs. Many symbols of Easter are related to the spring and beginning of new life. In the Czech Republic, Easter symbols include:

VĚSTNÍK

Eggs and kraslice The hand-painted or decorated egg (kraslice) is the most recognizable symbol of Czech Easter. Easter eggs are decorated by girls to be given to boys on Easter Monday. There are many techniques to decorate Easter eggs and they usually require a certain level of skill. Different materials can be used, such as bee’s wax, straw (hay), watercolors, onion peels, and picture stickers. There are no limitations in creating pretty, colorful eggs. A nationwide Easter egg contest is held in many Czech cities around Easter time.

Baby Animals— Lamb, Bunny Rabbit, Chicken One Easter tradition is to bake a lamb, but in the Czech Republic real lamb is usually replaced by one made from gingerbread.

Pussywillow and Pomlázka Young, live pussywillow twigs are thought to bring health and youth to anyone who is whipped with them. A pomlázka (from pomladit or “make younger”) — a braided whip made from pussywillow twigs — has therefore been used for centuries by boys

The Days Before Easter Sunday Children finish school on Ugly Wednesday - škaredá středa - which is a good idea because they need to spend some serious time on making Easter what it should be. In the evening of Green Thursday - Zelení čtvrtek - every boy in the village equips himself with a wooden rattle - řehtačka - which is specially made for the purpose, the boys form a group and walk through the village, rattling their rattles vigorously so the noise can be heard from afar. The

meaning of the rattling is to chase away Judas. The same procedure repeats on Good Friday - Velkí pátek - and one more time on White Saturday - Bílá sobota - when the boys don’t only walk through the village, but stop at every house in the morning and rattle until they’re given money which they then split between themselves. Easter Sunday Easter Sunday - Neděle velikonoční - is a day of preparations for Easter

who go caroling on Easter Monday and symbolically whip girls on the legs. Boys used to make their own pomlázky in the past (the more twigs, the more difficult it was to braid one), but this tradition and skill is long gone and pomlázky can be bought in stores and on the streets. Some men don’t even bother and use a single twig or even a wooden spoon! Dousing Dousing a girl with water has a similar symbolic meaning as the pomlázka.

The Color Red Red and other bright colors symbolize health, joy, happiness and new life that comes with the spring.

Monday. Girls paint, color, and decorate eggs, if they haven’t done so before, and boys prepare their pomlázky!

Easter Monday Easter Monday - Pondělí velikonoční - is a day off, the day of the pomlázka. The origin of the pomlázka tradition (pomlázka meaning both the whip and the tradition itself) dates back to pagan times. Its original purpose and symbolic meaning is to chase away illness and bad spirits and bring health and youth for the rest of the year to everyone who is whipped with the young pussywillow twigs. In the past, pomlázka was not only used by boys to whip girls, but also by the farmer’s wife to whip the livestock, as well as everyone in the household, including men and children. Boys would whip girls lightly on the legs and possibly douse them with water, which had a similar symbolic meaning. An Easter carol, usually asking for an egg or two, would be recited by the boy while whipping.

The girl would then reward the boy with a painted egg or candy and tie a ribbon around his pomlázka. As the boys progressed through the village, their bags filled up with eggs and their pomlázky were adorned with more and more colorful ribbons.

This tradition is still largely upheld, especially in villages and small towns, although it may have lost its symbol-

forgotten that the whipping is supposed to be only symbolic and girls don’t always like that. The reward has also changed — money and shots of plum brandy are

often given instead of or in addition to painted eggs and candy. So by early afternoon, groups of happy men can be seen staggering along the road. All that aside, Easter still remains

one of the most joyful and fun holidays on the Czech calendar.
