’m sounding like a broken record again! This week’s Vestnik is another 40-page issue. Unfortunately, it was not enough pages as several items are awaiting the next Vestnik. Please stay tuned for these upcoming features: • Dedication of November 5, 2009 Fort Hood Memorial

• Memorial tribute to former District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr • Scenes from District Six Delegates’ Meeting

• Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club’s April Meeting Activities

We certainly appreciate all of your submissions. You make the Vestnik what it is, and we could not do it without your contributions. If you have submitted something recently and have not seen it in print, please let me know. We have had a lot of information coming through, and we may have missed something. Please do not be shy - give me a call so we can make it right! Thanks again for your dedication to our weekly newspaper and to SPJST!

Send Us Your Prom Photos Few things are as common in April as flowers and showers, but school proms come pretty close. Several schools will hold these annual dances in the next couple of weeks, and the Vestnik wants to feature prom photos of SPJST members. Text photos to 254-534-0807 or email to melaniez@vvm.com. Include the names of those pictured in the photo, SPJST lodge number of

the members pictured, and which school’s prom the subjects attended. At least one person should be an SPJST member in couple photos, and the majority of people should be SPJST members in group photos. We look forward to seeing your prom pictures!

Pass the Hat Carolyn Pechacek of Lodge 88, Houston shared a great idea recently. She suggested that lodges “pass the hat” at meetings or events a couple times a year and encourage members/guests to donate to the Czech Heritage Museum. This could really make a big difference. Thanks, Carolyn, for the idea.

From the Insurance Department Opportunity Knocks - Go For It!

SPJST is offering a wonderful opportunity to advance and enhance your career. On April 11, 12, and 13, 2016, there will be a three-day class at the SPJST Home Office that will prepare you to pass an exam to be a licensed life insurance agent. You will receive all of the help you will need to pass the exam, including an up-to-date textbook and CD for home study. The author of the textbook will be your teacher, Dr. B. J. Sims, an experienced instructor whose success rate for first-time test-takers has been a phenomenal 98 percent. Ask yourself, what is in it for me? First, it will help you get a better un-

derstanding of life insurance products. Second, it will provide increased income opportunities as you share SPJST with others. Third, it will give you the satisfaction of helping families solve their insurance problems and ensure their families have peace of mind. The cost for all three days is only $125. If you then become an SPJST agent (or are one already) and write at least 10 applications between April 13 and December 31, SPJST will reimburse you the cost of the class. Please contact the SPJST Home Office at 254-773-1575 by March 31 if you would like to attend. —SPJST—

District Seven Director: we must create a realistic business plan

This report brings out three questions:

1. Where the SPJST was; 2. Where the SPJST is now; 3. Where will the SPJST be in the future.

As per Allen Bailey’s letter to the board, we must start creating a realistic business plan with a projected expected future financial performance. There are two general components that a business plan consists of. They are: 1. In-force business 2. Expected future production

We must answer these two, to plan for the future. We need to put in place a plan for the future of SPJST and its members. We need to schedule a workshop day to look into the budget, marketing, ex-

penses, and income. We must plan out for the next five years, 10 years, 15 years, or even 20 years out. We will need the department heads to come up with ideas and information to plan. We need to keep abreast of all new laws that come effective now. We don’t want the regulators (government) to come in and tell us how to do it. We must file all reports in a timely manner. We must not let anything slip through. I do not want to see SPJST fold. We are too proud of a fraternal company to let something like that happen to us. We need leaders who will step up to the plate and get the job done. Remember, we are here to protect our members and their monies. There are changes coming, and we can’t stop them. We must be able to work through them for the future of the SPJST. I think that the next four years are going to be very crucial. We must be ready and willing to face any problem that arises. Lodges Invited to Apply For Join Hands Day Incentives May 7 marks the date for this year’s Join Hands Day. Join Hands Day is a program of the American Fraternal Alliance. The 130-year old organization unites not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies that operate in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. We hope your lodge has discussed plans for a project to involve youth, adults, and/or other organizations to make improvements in your community. This year, SPJST wants the lodges to invite other community organizations such as Lions Club, Volunteer Fire Departments, Kiwanis, Boy/Girl Scouts. Visit American Fraternal Alliance’s webpage for some great ideas at this weblink: https://netforum.avectra.com/eWeb/DynamicPage.aspx?Site =AFALLIANCE&WebCode =JoinHandsDay. The Supreme Lodge again will offer the $100 incentive to all lodges that register their project with the Home Office. You can do this by completing the Join Hands Day flyer that was sent to lodge FACs and returning it to the SPJST Home Office. This year American Fraternal Alliance is asking not to register your projects on their website prior to JOIN HANDS DAY. They are asking that you share stories of your projects, including and especially, photos on their Facebook page at facebook.com/fraternalalliance. If you have any questions, you can contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at tammym@spjst.com or 800-727-7578 or me at frankh@spjst.com or my cell phone 254-534-0681. End of Summer Get Away It is not too early to start planning for the Corpus Christi Get Away to be held August 12, 13, and 14. This event gets bigger and better each year. Last year, approximately 368 men, women, boys, and girls from across the state came out to enjoy the weekend fraternal celebration. Once again, the 2016 celebration commences with the Aloha Party on Friday night. In addition to the Friday golf tournament, plans are being made to also host the deep-sea fishing outing for those wanting to get a jump on the weekend fun. This year, we will have Dramamine for the fishermen! Saturday’s events will once again include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42, bunco, and an evening party. This year, the Saturday night festivities will take on the theme of “Seeking The Treasures of SPJST!” Additional details will be printed in the Vestnik as they become available. Watch the Vestnik for additional details including how to make your reservations for what promises to be a great time! We are here to help if you need assistance. District Two ENC Representative Shares Spring Meeting Report

Dear District Two Members, I am sorry I was not able to attend the District Two Spring Meeting held March 13, 2016, at Lodge 48, Beyersville. I was suffering from the flu and did not wish to expose anyone to such a terrible illness. I would like to thank everyone for having me as the District Two representative on the SPJST Education and Nature Center Board of Directors. The SPJST ENC Board would like to thank everyone who has supported the ENC – either by donation of time, money, or property improvements. The continued support of the districts and lodges is vital to the success of the SPJST ENC. We have recently voted to bring Ms. Nancy Miller on to the board as treasurer. Nancy is a certified public accountant and has done an excellent job in helping the ENC with their accounting and budgeting. We have also voted for SPJST Foundation Director of Development James Lee, III to serve in an advisory position on the board. James is a visionary when it comes to fundraising, and he is a very enthusiastic advisor. The SPJST ENC has been in operation for six years, and rentals have increased every year. The summer months are extremely busy, and things tend to slow down in the winter and fall months. There has been some discussion about possibly hosting events in the fall to include a mother-daughter outing, father-son event, SPJST Alumni camp, and possibly a family camp. The SPJST ENC is going through some major changes in the next few months. Camp Director John Hoelscher has accepted a position with another company. He was made an offer that after much consideration and discussion with his family, they decided the offer was too good to pass up. The ENC Board and members of SPJST will greatly miss seeing John and Lisa at camp and hope that Michael, Emma, and Abby continue to enjoy the benefits of the SPJST Youth Program. We all love this family and want to support them in their new adventure. The Hoelschers have given so much time and dedication towards the success of SPJST ENC and for that, we will always be grateful. The ENC Board has been actively accepting applications and plans to have a camp director in place for this summer. John Hoelscher has agreed to help train the new person and help familiarize him/her with SPJST as well as other groups that regularly camp at SPJST ENC. The ENC will help set up and run

several youth games at the SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration set for Saturday, May 7 at Lodge 47, Seaton. All proceeds raised at this event will be divided between the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center and the ENC. We would like to encourage all members, their families, and friends to join us in this fun and eventful day. Booth space is available for $35 inside and $25 outside to anyone who would like to display their crafts, or if your lodge/youth club would like to sell its goods and donate the proceeds towards the event then your booth space fee will be waived. Currently, the ENC is also seeking licensed contractors, carpenters, electricians, and plumbers to donate their skills with a few projects that need to be addressed on the property. Please note that SPJST ENC is a 501(c)(3) organization, and licensed professionals can donate their time for tax-exemption. We have planned the second annual work week starting on Saturday, May 14 through Sunday, May 22 where we will be tackling several projects. Please see the Vestnik for more information on this work week. If you are not available or able to help during this week, please consider a donation. The money donated will be used to purchase supplies, or you may donate money towards any of the projects planned for that week. To donate or for more information, please contact your ENC representative or SPJST Foundation Director of Development James Lee, III. I would also like to tell everyone about the Clean Out Your Barn Statewide Auction to be held on Saturday, September 17 at the SPJST ENC property. SPJST Foundation Director of Development James Lee, III is currently accepting donations of farm equipment, mowers, cars, trucks, boats, etc. If you have a donation, please contact James at 1-800-727-7578, and he will arrange for someone to come pick up your donated item. Please know that all monies raised at this statewide auction will benefit the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center and SPJST Education and Nature Center. Thank you for your continued support and please consider being a part of one or all of the above mentioned fundraising or volunteer opportunities. Fraternally yours, Lynette Talasek ENC Board Secretary District Two ENC Representative —SPJST—

Fraternal Field Manager Doherty welcomed the new lodge members and offered advice on growing their membership. He encouraged the agents to educate the members on the products, benefits, and how to invite new members. “The education does not stop when the organizational meeting is over. This is just the beginning, not just with our products and benefits, but bringing light to the Czech culture.” The following individuals were elected to serve as officers: President C.W. Roberts, Vice President Clay Zapalac, and Secretary Cathy Rosene Anderson. A full slate of officers will be elected at a later date. At the outset of the newly organized lodge, it was noted any youngsters who are members and

would like to participate in an active youth club will be encouraged to join the Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club. “As the president of the new Houston Midtown lodge, I invite all SPJST members to our first meeting on April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the museum,” said President Roberts. “We would love to have you there. If you cannot come, you should visit the museum! The building would not be out of place in Prague. Everyone will enjoy the beautiful decor and the exhibits.” Home base for the new lodge will be the Czech Center Museum Houston, located at 4920 San Jacinto in Houston, Texas. Established in 1995, the Czech Center Museum Houston (CCMH) celebrates and promotes the rich cultural abundance of the Slavic peoples, with an emphasis on Czech and Slovak heritage and culture. The Center, which is open to the public, holds art exhibits, concerts, lectures, tours, and conferences, private and corporate events

with education as the central core and can now add another dimension which a lodge can bring. CCMH founders Bill and Effie Rosene were instrumental in rallying support for the new lodge and both were in attendance for the organizational meeting. District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt cited Mr. and Mrs. Rosene for their devotion and commitment to the museum and to SPJST. “The Museum is an icon here in the Museum District,” said Director Pflughaupt. “It was a long time in coming, and we are excited about its prospects moving forward!” “The formation of an SPJST lodge through the Czech Center Museum Houston denotes an important step in our pursuit of mutual goals,” said Mrs. Rosene, CCMH Chair/CEO. “The Center believes that knowing one’s ancestry, culture, and heritage helps one understand his own and to better understand another’s culture. We thank

the SPJST and its many officers and members for their efforts in helping to make the new lodge possible.” Bill Rosene, CCMH VP Admin and Secretary, echoed Ms. Rosene's sentiments, stating that, “Language, art, tradition, cuisine, and history all combine to define our respective cultures. By bringing together multiple organizations pursuit of a common cause, every organization stands to benefit.” Per the SPJST By-Laws, “A newly organized lodge must hold 12 monthly scheduled lodge meetings and submit all required reports to the Home Office before they can be considered for chartering by the Supreme Lodge. Transfers and juveniles do not count for chartering purposes.” The prospective lodge begins its journey forward with 36 members. Of these, 28 of the adult members did not previously belong to an existing lodge, two are transfers and six are children. —SPJST—

S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Third Facility in Texas

Non-profit strives to offer quality care for its residents

The facility does offer physical therapy with Angels Home Health Care providing that service. But they are working on a contract to offer therapy on a more regular and permanent basis. “Once that contract is in place, we will have therapy more readily available,” she said.

By Quala Matocha El Campo Leader-News March 26, 2016

Editor’s Note: This article and photo originally appeared in the El Campo Leader-News and is reprinted with permission.

Formerly the Czech Catholic Home for the Aged, the nursing home facility in Hillje changed hands the first of this year, and is now known as S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living. It is the third center of its kind in the state of Texas, with one located in Taylor and another in Needville.

We Are Non-Profit S.P.J.S.T., a non-profit organization, was founded by the statewide Czech fraternal organization. The English translations is akin to the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. The Senior Living Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hillje is a 56-bed licensed facility. The health care staff consists of a group of trained professionals, including the nursing and dietary staff, doctors, and contracted dietitians who make regular visits. The first center was established in Taylor in 1957 with 74 beds. Then in 1970, SPJST established its second location in Needville, which is a 58-bed facility. “SPJST, an insurance non-profit organization, wanted somewhere for their members to be able to go,” explained Rowena Tabler-Smith, administrator at the Hillje facility. But today, you don’t have to be a member of SPJST to be a resident of any of these three nursing homes. “Now anyone can be in the facility,” she said.

Quality Care Smith is excited to be in charge of a facility that offers what she considers excellent care for its residents. “We strive to provide the best quality care and since we are non-profit, we can do this,” she said. “We have a low CNA-to-patient ratio. We have 1 to 8 or 1 to 10 when most others are 1-

AT THE HELM. S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living administrator Rowena TablerSmith, center, looks over the monthly calendar of activities for residents at the home with Activity Director Bonnie Hensley, left, and Linda Espitia, who is in charge of medical records. The facility, located in Hillje, is the former Czech Catholic Home for the Aged which was purchased by S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Centers in January of this year. While operations are as usual, there are some positive changes at the nursing home which strives for quality care for its residents. —Leader-News Photo by Quala Matocha

15.” A staff of 42 offers 24-hour skilled nursing care. Currently, the facility has 36 residents, but can accommodate up to 57. “Our goal is to continue to stay small. If we get to 50, that will be fine,” Smith said.

Employee Incentives While the facility has not changed its day-to-day operations, Smith says, “we have increased employee morale.” Employees are given extra incentives, such as paid insurance coverage. “We offer employees paid insurance and other benefits, like life insurance and dental coverage,” she said. “By boosting employee morale, we boost the quality of care for our patients.”

Activities Daily activities and occasional outings encourage residents to participate at their own pace. Volunteers from the community step in to assist with bingo games and worship services. “Activities are planned every day,” she said. “Bingo is a favorite twice a week.” Other activities include watching a movie and popcorn for a treat, dominoes, Rosary every Monday, and Mass

on Sundays and Wednesdays. Also, Faith Lutheran Church offers a time of worship once a month, and the VFW auxiliary ladies head up bingo games and a birthday celebration once a month. Louise Elementary students make special visits during certain holidays, often singing several songs to residents and delivering handmade items, such as paper valentines they brought in February. The nursing home also hosts an Easter egg hunt for students. Dietary Department Homecooked meals, instead of prepackaged foods, are offered at the facility. “We make a lot from scratch,” she said. “It’s so good.” The facility has a contract with a licensed dietitian who plans meals, but one meal a month includes foods residents vote on during their council meeting.

Medicare Offerings Currently, the center does not accept Medicare, but Smith says they are working on that. “We have submitted our Medicare application, so we can improve continuity of care,” she explained. “For example, if you go to the hospital, you can return here for skilled care.”

Residents Council Those who live at S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living also have a voice through their monthly residents council meeting. While the council is nothing new, Smith says it is still important to allow residents to make choices about their care. Currently, Ed White serves as president, and Ella Engbrock is vice president. “The residents get together at least once a month,” she said. “They share ideas, and they choose an outing.” This month they will be dining at Greeks Bros. “Wherever they want to go . . . movies, park, and anywhere they want to eat,” Smith said. “This is their home, and sometimes they have more rights here than they do at home,” Smith explained. “We try to provide the best home atmosphere that we can.”

Community Involvement The facility welcomes outside groups to come and host parties or games for the residents. In an effort to get the community involved, Smith organized a garage sale in November where people set up booths at the facility to sell their items. Smith says they also try to be visible in the community as a vendor at festivals, or by doing something for businesses, like the Thirsty Thursdays where they deliver sodas or shakes to a particular business. The Hillje center has teamed up with Wharton County Junior College’s Meals on Wheels and delivers prepackaged meals to seniors in El Campo. As an S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living facility, Smith is glad to be at the helm of a nursing home where quality of care is still very important. That is one aspect that will never change, she said. “Quality of care . . . we don’t want to get away from that,” Smith said. —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on March 10, 2016, in the Sokol Club Room. We arrived at 8 a.m., stretched Dorothy Kudrna’s tie quilt, and another top made by her late sister Evelyn. Dorothy has lots of items and memories of her late mother and sister. How nice. Thank you to everyone who came early to tie quilt. President Irene worked with the ladies who have started quilt tops. Sewing machines, iron, and ironing board were brought, and they really went to work. I’m excited for these two ladies - Lorane Marusak and Kay Lynn Kovar. Kay Lynn is working on a top started by her late mom. By lunchtime, we had 17 members. It was raining that day, and we were glad to have the ones who came. Our Fort Worth people - Lil and Libbie didn’t make it, which I understand. At noon, President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you to the group that set up and cleaned up; you’re great as always. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Rosie Bacak, Frank Zabojnik, Wilma Holt, Edward Steve Mensik, Bessie Petr, and Duaril Lamb. We also remembered Ginny Svehlak’s brother-in-law Al Svehlak, who is ill, and Lorane Marusak’s granddaughter Adriana Cobrera, who was hit in her mouth while playing and had several teeth messed up. The “Our Father” was recited for

them and for all our sick members. Secretary Ann read her minutes of the last meeting then Treasurer Dolores gave her report. Both were approved as read. Ginny Svehlak read three funny articles - “Two Nuns at the Store;” “Doc Said Six Months;” and “Chuckles from Children.” We all enjoyed them and had a good laugh. Sunshine Lady Dorothy Prachyl had a card to sign for Lavina Patman wishing her well, and that she is missed, and a 90th birthday card for Joyce Ehrenberger who now lives in North Carolina; she is also missed. Quilt scheduler Pat Fowler reported

that in April, we will quilt for Dorothy Prachyl; May - Irene Prachyl; and June - Dolores Vrana. In July, we will have an elephant sale and show-andtell. New member Karen Haskovec was telling us that her blueberries are really blooming, and she is expecting a good crop. Maybe Karen will bring us a few to taste when they’re ready. The 50-50 dollar winner was Dorothy Kudrna; it was her first time to win. She thanked all who worked on her tie quilt. President Irene thanked all for coming, for the set up and clean up, the food, and for quilting.

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

We were a little late starting our March meeting due to the weather. Only 26 brave souls came due to the really strong storms in the area. Street flooding was everywhere in the area. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and due to the absence of Vice President Theretta Praslicka, there was no opening “thought for the day” or prayer. Her area was experiencing some of that flooding so she went back home after buying the kolaches she usually brings. Yours truly did not attend either due to being under the weather. President Cathy Simmank read the minutes which were approved. Margaret Laymance gave her financial report as well. The sunshine report was given by Marlene Bass. She sent cards to Brenda Lackey who had knee surgery, Charlie Davidson who had a tonsillectomy and a sympathy card to Corina Cranfield on the loss of her father-inlaw. The lodge celebrated Texas Independence Day on March 6 with a dance. I always think of the song “Waltz Across Texas” which brings back a sweet memory. The lodge also invited the Ladies Circle to participate in the celebration by hosting a cake walk during the band’s intermission. Treasurer Margaret organized it, and she announced that it was a success. Our members came through with 24 cakes and some monetary donations. Thanks to everyone who helped support this fundraiser. March hostesses Hermina Cihacek, Mary Ann Adcock, Pauline Morbitzer, and others who were not listed were thanked for pitching in to help out. We have such caring and kind members who always lend a helping hand. Birthday ladies were serenaded. JoAnn Wilcox was the only celebrity attending this day. Willie Mae Becan is not able to attend meetings any longer, and we send our best wishes to

her and miss her beautiful presence each month. Upcoming lodge activities were shared and by now have taken place. It was announced that lodge trustees are working on building improvements. There is new carpet in the ladies’ restroom, new doors have been ordered, and a new microwave for the kitchen has been approved. It should be here by the April meeting. The carpet looks great. St. Patrick was honored by “the wearing of the green” and shamrocks. Missing was green beer . . . there wasn’t any nor leprechauns. None could be found. Bummer! Door prizes included St Patrick’s Day dish towels, scarves, and socks. A lone Easter bunny was given out as well. The April meeting should be exciting. Since Easter was so very early, it will be celebrated by us in April.

Everyone is encouraged to wear spring colors and be ready to hunt Easter eggs. There will be an indoor Easter egg hunt with prize eggs and more. It is my understanding that President Cathy is working really hard to make those “colored” eggs come to life. And last of all, Mary Ann Krivanek stepped in and read several cute stories from her phone. Thank you, Mary Ann. You were a lifesaver. The meeting was adjourned followed by our potluck dinner and bingo. Personally, my thanks go out to Cathy for keeping our unit going even on stormy days. She puts such effort into making the meetings interesting and enjoyable and all of us appreciate her very much. Respectfully submitted, Joan Shropshire, Secretary —SPJST—

Termites

Lodge 258, Seguin Supports New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department

There are three main types of termites that can cause problems for homeowners in Texas - native subterranean termites, formosan subterranean termites, and drywood termites.

Native subterranean termites have nests in the soil and must maintain contact with soil or an above-ground moisture source to survive. If native subterranean termites move to areas above ground they make shelter (mud) tubes of fecal material, saliva and soil to protect themselves.

Formosan termites are a more voracious type of subterranean termite. These termites have been spread throughout Texas through transport of infested material or soil. Formosan termites build carton nests that allow them to survive above ground without

contact with the soil. Nests are often located in hollow spaces, such as wall voids. Formosan termites feed on a wider variety of cellulose than other subterranean termites, including live plants, consuming both spring and summer growth wood whereas native subterranean termites feed only on spring growth. Formosan termites have also been known to chew through non-cellulose materials such as soft metals, plaster or plastic. Drywood termites do not need contact with soil and reside in sound, dry

All of the winners will be announced at the SPJST Flag Day Ceremony on Sunday, June 12 at the SPJST Leaders-in-Training Camp. The deadline for all entries is May 31. chosen a project to lead for this years work week at the ENC. The ENC is asking for each lodge to consider participating in a work project and/or sponsor the cost of materials for one of the work projects. We understand that not everyone is able to come out to the property and help, but we would like for you to consider making a donation towards helping on this day. Please indicate on your check which work project you would like to sponsor or partially sponsor. If you would like to come and help for several days, please know that the cabins will be open for those who need to stay the night.

SPJST Foundation “Clean Out Your Barn” Statewide Garage Sale The SPJST Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The Foundation is seeking to raise funds to assist the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center. In order to reach this goal, the first event planned is a statewide auction. We are currently seeking donations for this event.

Important Notice: Vestnik Projects and Fourth Quarterly Merit Reports Due June 1 Please remember the Vestnik projects and fourth quarterly merit reports are due on June 1. If you mail them to the Home Office on or after June 15, this does not give Tammy enough time (one week) to get the data to the District Youth Counselors on who is eligible to attend SPJST camp and Youth Achievement Day. Please be diligent on getting this information in a timely manner. SPJST Create a Commercial Contest SPJST is excited to introduce a new contest! Members are encouraged to create a commercial.

2016 Leaders-In-Training Workshop June 9 to 11 at SPJST Education and Nature Center Since 2016 is SPJST Convention year, we will need to start LIT retreat a day early. We are working on plans to have a great LIT retreat lined up for our youth. Our retreat will be held at the SPJST Education and Nature Center. This year, our LIT retreat will start on Thursday, June 9 and end on Saturday,

June 11. Mark your calenders and save the date for a great time. I hope that all youth that finished their eighth grade year through graduating seniors will participate as LITs. Please be sure to complete your online registration no later than May 15. I look forward to seeing you all there! Youth eligible to be a Leader-InTraining? LITs are active high school aged youth who have been approved by their youth leader and District Youth Counselor as responsible and mature enough to be an LIT. The youth club member may attend the LIT Workshop after completing a Leaders-In-Training application.

2016 SPJST Summer Camp The SPJST Summer Camp applications are available online. A checklist of items to have handy prior to filling out the camp application is included on the camp page at www.spjst.org. Please mention to your parents that shot records are available from the school nurse, and if there were no changes, you can also obtain this information from your District Youth Counselor. I would like to have all camp applications in by June 1. If you have a member who is not active in the youth

program but who would still like to attend SPJST Summer Camp, he/she may attend for a fee. The cost for the four-day, three-night camp is $160 per camper made payable to SPJST. If you are interested in your child attending SPJST Summer Camp and would like more information, please contact State Youth Director Lynette Talasek at 254773-1575 or 1-800-727-7578. Mark Your Calendar: May 7 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2016 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years include baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizen programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects, and fundraising for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2016. The main thing — at this point — is committing to doing something. When coming up with ideas for your project, try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me. Again, this year, the Supreme Lodge

The next day was the Easter party. I had fun getting lots of eggs. I liked the prize that the Easter Bunny gave me - a foam rocket launcher. There were a lot of people who came and visited us.

The Subway sandwiches that my Mom ordered and we picked up for the party were really good along with all the other food. My sister made 72 deviled eggs, and there weren’t any left. Thank you to everyone who came and helped. The party was really a lot of fun, and I can’t wait until the next party. Fraternally, Keith Wockenfuss, President —SPJST—

Youth Leaders Meet in Temple for Annual Retreat

Saturday, March 19, 2016 • SPJST Home Office/Spare Time in Temple, Texas • By Lynette Talasek, State Youth Director

It was great seeing so many of you at the Youth Leaders Retreat on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at the SPJST Home Office! Those of you who were not able to attend missed out on a wonderful experience. Please make every effort to attend your district’s youth leader training to be hosted by your District Youth Counselor. In the meantime, I look forward to meeting with you and visiting your youth club meetings. Thank you to everyone who attended and to those who had a helping hand in making it a productive and enjoyable experience. We started out the program by welcoming President Brian Vanicek, State FAC Frank Horak, District Two Director Jesse Pospisil, District One Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick, District Three Director John Engelke, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny and SPJST Foundation Director of Development James Lee, III. President Brian Vanicek thanked the youth leaders for their dedication and for their efforts to enhance the lives of young people through the SPJST Youth Program. President Vanicek covered the 20162017 incentive awards and recognized Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader Joyce Kraatz and Lodge 9, Snook Youth Leader Loree Lewis for winning the Youth Leaders Incentive Award for

2015-2016. Last year, youth leaders were encouraged to come on board as SPJST sales agents. Several youth leaders took President Vanicek up on that offer, and they were recognized. Becoming an agent can help youth leaders become more familiar with the insurance products and increase their ability to share that information with potential members. If anyone is interested in becoming an agent, please contact Vice President Clifton Coufal at 254-7731575 or 800-727-7578. SPJST Foundation Director of Development James Lee, III introduced himself to the group and covered the SPJST Foundation and several upcoming events that the Foundation is sponsoring. We then covered the importance of membership drives and how youth leaders should invite guests to all youth events. A membership drive does not have to be a “planned” event. Membership drives can happen every time we encounter youth either at our monthly youth meetings or during socials. Youth leaders were encouraged to have SPJST information in their purse or car at all times. Everyone was reminded that their youth club receives one free mailout a year. This includes the creation of an informative flyer with the details of your event. Mem-

bership list and mailing labels are always available upon request. If you have not planned your membership drive for 2016-2017 youth year and you need help, please contact your District Youth Counselor or State Youth Director. We reviewed changes to the 20152016 SPJST Youth Club Handbook and answered a number of related questions. This year, the constructed item is a repurposed craft. Please note that the handbook states on page 26 that the project may include hardware that is necessary to complete the project. In addition to the constructed item changes, please review with your youth club members the changes made to Foods (page 26) and Photography (page 27). Youth Achievement Day entry cards were distributed and youth club handbooks were issued. Please make every effort to attend your district’s youth leaders training. If you are in need of any supplies, please contact me or Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez. After lunch, four new groups were formed and the youth leaders rotated through sessions led by the District Youth Counselors. Lots of new ideas were shared, and many good questions addressed. Youth leaders have been asked to create monthly newsletters that can be

emailed to the youth. The Home Office will be sending out new member contact information on a monthly basis to the youth leaders so that they can contact these new members, add them to an email list, and invite them to youth club meetings. Youth leaders were encouraged to add a creative twist to the meetings and work on making the meeting relevant while still being respectful of our members’ time. The workshop concluded at 4:30 p.m. and was followed at 6 p.m by the service awards presentation and dinner. Youth leaders were thanked for their work with the youth program and presented with their 42(i) allocation funds and years of service pins. After dinner, everyone enjoyed bowling and socializing at Spare Time Bowling Center. Please know that this is a learning workshop, but it is also a time to share ideas, have fun, and make new friends. One of the main goals of the workshop is to refresh and renew our youth leaders, and I hope that goal was accomplished. I look forward to having 100 percent attendance next year! Fraternally, Lynette Talasek State Youth Director —SPJST—

John and I will be married 10 years this May. Along with all the regular marriage promises, we vowed to celebrate our nuptials every five years with, what else, a polka party. Our wedding reception on May 20, 2006, was held at Sokol Hall in Houston. Piano man Gene Lichnovsky provided dinner music and Mark Halata and Texavia played for the dance. On our fifth anniversary, we again celebrated at Sokol Hall with Texavia. This year, on our 10th, the party will be held at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston on Saturday, May 14. Mark Halata and Texavia will once again provide the music, and Gene plans to join in for a few numbers, and play at intermission as well. I’m also celebrating another anniversary as polkabeat.com begins its sixth year of promoting polka and Texas dancehall music. As Danny Zapletal told me the other day, “When you first started polkabeat, I was thinking ‘There’s no way she’ll be able to keep sending out weekly announcements.’ Glad I was wrong.” Actually Danny, I’ve had those

Free music program explores origins of Texas Czech folk songs

Enjoy the presentation Varied and Vibrant Sources of the Czech Song in Texas – a lecture/demo by accordionists and music scholars Frances Barton and Dr. John Novak in support of their forthcoming book. This free event is Sunday, April 17, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the Capitol Extension Auditorium, located in the State Capitol in Austin, Texas. Barton and Novak have been compiling a collection of folk and popular songs of Czech Texas for several years and are nearing completion of their project. The finished songbook will contain 90 songs familiar to most people in the Texas Czech community and will include the music, chords, Czech lyrics, English translations, English lyrics if there are any, and historical and folkloric information on each song. They plan to complete the book in 2016. Frances Barton has a degree in American studies with a minor in music from the University of Texas at Austin where she also did graduate work in journalism. Her large extended immigrant family left Vsetín county in northeastern Moravia to set-

tle in Williamson County in central Texas between 1881 and 1904. Her father, Reverend Josef A. Barton, recruited her at an early age to play for services he conducted in both Czech and English in Czech-Moravian Brethren churches throughout the state. She plays accordion in the Austin-based polka band the Czech Melody Masters and also sings and plays piano and accordion in several other music ensembles. John K. Novak is the great-grandson of Czech immigrants who settled in Fayette County, the center of the Czech belt in Texas. They came from the Lanškroun area of eastern Bohemia. He has a doctorate in music theory from the University of Texas at Austin as well as a master’s degree in piano literature. While at UT, he was the recipient of the John Maresh Scholarship in Czech Culture. He taught at Oberlin Conservatory before settling into his current position, Associate Professor of Music Theory, at Northern Illinois University. The subjects of his research and published works include the music of Janačék, Debussy, Dvořák, Bartók, Suk, and various styles of popular music. He plays and performs on both the accordion and piano. The music program is offered in conjunction with the multi-media exhibition Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition, which is currently on display at the Capitol Visitors Center (112 E. 11th Street in Austin) in Austin through June 11, 2016. It was produced by the nonprofit organization PolkaWorks and co-curated by Texas Czechs Lori Najvar and Dawn Orsak. It is being presented at the CVC by the State Preservation Board. Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition highlights community traditions and activities on text/photo montage panels, presenting a contemporary picture of the diversity and richness of Texas Czech culture today. It also includes photographs, artifacts, and short documentary films shown in a multi-media “station.” Topics include taroky, music, language, community celebrations, Sokol, and more. Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition was produced in part with major funding from Humanities Texas, KJZTCatholic Family Fraternal of Texas, KJT-Catholic Union of Texas, and individual sponsors. PolkaWorks’ mission is to highlight unique cultural traditions through documentaries, photography, and public programs designed to educate and inspire. For more information, contact Lori
