Supreme Lodge Vice President candidate withdraws

Dear Delegates, After praying and discussing with my family, it is with a heavy heart, I have decided to withdraw my name as a candidate for SPJST Vice President for the 2016 Convention. As I sit here writing and re-writing this letter as a Christian, not as a politician, I feel that leaders of a fraternal organization should not “mislead” the membership and/or delegates of SPJST in any way. If we as delegates allow this to happen, we will go from a fraternal life insurance organization to a “Corporate America” life insurance company in a very short time. Delegates, please keep in mind that you are representing the members of your local lodge when you vote on the remaining candidates. Please vote for a candidate that will work to keep

SPJST a fraternal life insurance organization. Vote for a Candidate, not a Politician—someone that has supported SPJST for many years in the past and will continue for years to come, not just currently. God bless, David C. Pechal Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—

FROM THE SUPREME LODGE VICE PRESIDENT

Vice President Shares Qualifications, Plans

Hello, Vestnik Readers. I would like to address several important issues in the Vice President’s race—specifically to look at qualifications and to highlight some of my plans regarding the challenges facing our organization. While I have addressed some of those in the Vice President’s Pre-Convention Report, I would like to explain some of the reasoning behind what we have implemented and the goals moving forward. Whoever gets the job of vice president faces a much greater job than just developing salespeople. Developing agents is important, but only a small part of the job. The role of a field manager is to manage agents to help them to sell better and provide training and guidance to help with the company’s overall growth. It is an extremely valuable function and necessary for the organization. However, the role of Vice President has a very different skillset. The Vice President’s position is not about becoming a super field manager but looking at the big picture and developing a vision for growth and sustainability for the future. That means not just helping agents to sell

but to look at why the organization is in the market in the first place. It means looking at areas that can cause serious trouble to the organization if they are not addressed and developing and implementing policies to ensure SPJST can protect itself. This means not only dealing with current and potential Texas Department of Insurance regulations or with state and federal laws but with creating a vision that can successfully navigate those areas while still holding to our core values as an organization. The basic qualifications for the SPJST Supreme Lodge including the Vice President are found in Article 26 of the SPJST By-Laws. The qualifications include being a U.S. citizen, being a member for more than five years, having 50K in insurance, being present at the convention, and having appreciation of the Czech and English languages. The qualifications found in Article 26 alone do not make anyone qualified to direct an organization like SPJST. SPJST is not just a small fraternal organization anymore. SPJST has over $900 million worth of cer-

4

Wednesday, June 8, 2016

tificates outstanding and over $1 billion outstanding if annuities are included. SPJST is also under more and stronger regulations than in the past. The following are some qualifications relevant to the Vice President’s position that I possess: • Meet all of the requirements found in Article 26.

• Fourth generation member of SPJST (Great-grandfather J.J. Mikeska was president of Lodge 47).

• Hold a valid insurance license and annuity certification. • Hold FIC and FICF designations.

• Marketing experience - Hold a Master’s in Marketing from Texas A&M.

• Leadership experience - Lead teams of MBAs on various projects and currently lead the SPJST Insurance Department.

• Investment experience - held FINRA investment licenses, advised on investments.

• Legal and compliance experience Hold a J.D. and L.L.M from Duke Law. • Risk management experience - look at current and potential threats to the organization.

• Business experience ranging from small LLCs to Fortune 500 organizations. • Ability to create a vision and long term strategies for the Insurance Department.

• Willingness to empower agents and employees to succeed.

Qualifications are only a starting point. The proof is in the pudding, so to speak. Since I was brought on board, major changes have gone into effect resulting in a strong turnaround of the Insurance Department. As a result of these initiatives, I am excited to see how much our performance has increased from 2014 to 2015. I am thrilled that we have made great progress in bringing on new members. In 2014, we had 888 issued applications; in 2015, we had 1,053 which is an increase of 18.5 percent! Additionally, we have done a better job of

keeping our membership on the books. Our 13-month persistency was 87.1 percent at the end of 2014, but it improved to 94.6 percent by the end of 2015. Our 25-month persistency was at 81.8 percent in 2014 and has now grown to 91.3 percent at the end of 2015. This shows that we are bringing on better business and keeping it! Additionally, the lapse ratio looks at all of the certificates that lapse out in a given year compared to all of the certificates we have on the books. Back in the late 2000s, our lapse ratio was over 11 percent. That means that if we had 50,000 certificates, 5,500 certificates fell off of the books each year. That has improved over the years. In 2014, our lapse ratio was 4.5 percent. However, in 2015, our lapse ratio fell to 2.6 percent. That means that in 2015, we kept more than 900 certificates from falling off the books compared to 2014! To put it in another way, we saved more than 2.5 certificates every single day over the 365 days of 2015. In 2016, we are improving our numbers compared to 2015. Comparing January to April 2015 to January to April 2016, our issued certificates are up 22.9 percent, and the amount of insurance issued is up 44.3 percent! I am so thankful for the hard work of our Insurance Department, field managers, and our agents. As the insurance side continues to improve, it allows the fraternal side of SPJST to continue to support our fraternal benefits to the members and affiliated organizations like the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) and the Czech Heritage Museum. My vision for the organization is to grow and develop our relationship with our members with the goal of every member seeing themselves as part of the SPJST community. I am excited about SPJST and want us to continue to bring our cherished Czech traditions and family focus to communities across the state. SPJST is a family organization, and our fraternal programs allow us to reach out and impact our community in many different ways. For example, I can remember as a child how much I looked forward to the SPJST youth club meetings where I could meet friends and participate in community projects. I would like for my children to have those same feelings when they are old enough to join the youth program. We have made great progress, but it doesn’t mean we can rest easy. If elected, there are areas we still need to address. We are looking at developing marketing programs to people with

Czech and Slavic ancestry not currently associated with SPJST. We will need to update the cost basis for our products when the new mortality standards are available in 2017 to ensure we remain competitive in the marketplace. We need to continue to look at putting good, sustainable business on the books. We need to continue to bring in enough premium income to support our various projects. What gives SPJST its unique flavor is our community involvement, local lodges, and fraternal activities. That does require funding, and we will continue to make changes to generate long

VĚSTNÍK

term sustainable growth to provide funding for our causes. I believe this management team and Supreme Lodge overall is highly positive for the organization. I believe we have made great steps focused on the long term growth of SPJST. I would like to continue to fulfill that vision and to continue to serve as your Vice President. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. Fraternally, Clifton Coufal, FIC, FICF Vice President —SPJST—

Lodge 84, Dallas: members, please come to June 8 special meeting

Dear Members, The active Lodge 84, Dallas members have been discussing various options about what to do in the best interest of the current lodge facility. Lodge 84, Dallas is the Czech Center of Dallas—but we need . . . we must have . . . our members’ input and help. The facility/lodge hall/building needs constant maintenance and repairs, and we must come up with a solution for our Czech Center of Dallas. At the last meeting in May, it was decided to hold a special committee meeting on Wednesday, June 8 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Please save the date, circle it on your calendar, and set a reminder in your smart phone. We need Lodge 84 members to help decide what is best for the lodge’s future. We want to have a plan in place for Lodge 84. We want to be able to have a facility—not meet at a member’s home or

the local Denny’s. We want to continue to have some resemblance of a lodge intact, but we must have your input. The current property is not for sale, but we must hear ideas from our other members—not just the 12 or so members who regularly attend meetings each month. Our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents worked hard to establish Lodge 84 as one of the prominent lodges of SPJST. We are so proud of our past. But, we must work to preserve the lodge’s future by planning today. Please help. Please contact Lodge 84, Dallas President Justine Yeager with any questions prior to the meeting by emailing her at dyeags@swbell.net. Again, the date is Wednesday, June 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Lodge 84, Dallas. The address is 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas. Can we please count on you to be there to offer input and advice? Fleas

By Wizzie Brown Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Program Specialist

Fleas are ectoparasites and females require a blood meal to produce eggs. After feeding on a host, females can produce about 30 to 50 eggs per day that fall off the host animal and into carpeting or other areas of the home or outside in areas where the animal frequents. Larvae feed on organic matter as well as partially digested blood excreted by the adult fleas. After fleas pupate, they hatch out of the cocoon in about two weeks, but pupae can remain dormant for up to five months waiting for a host. A proper flea management program has two parts - managing fleas on any pets and managing fleas in the environment. A veterinarian should be consulted about flea control for pets; there are numerous products on the market that work well. Grooming the animal with a flea comb or bathing can help reduce flea numbers. When you find fleas on a pet, you most likely will need to treat the pet, inside the home, and the yard. Treatment should be targeted to areas where the pet likes to hang out. Fleas found in and around homes that do not have pets may be coming from wildlife. The attic and crawl spaces should be inspected to see if wildlife has moved into the area, bringing fleas with them. Wildlife should be removed with traps and the

12

area treated with an insecticide labeled for fleas. After wildlife is removed, the area should be sealed so that wildlife cannot move in again. It is also possible for new homeowners with no pets to have fleas. This usually results from previous owners having pets. Fleas can remain dormant for several months and become active again when they sense vibrations from hosts. Inside, vacuum regularly, getting under furniture and along baseboards to reduce flea eggs, larvae, and pupae. Place the vacuum bag in a sealed plastic bag and throw away in an outdoor garbage can at least once a week so fleas do not hatch out and re-infest the home. Wash pet bedding in hot water. Bathe pets regularly and use a flea comb to remove fleas. Avoid walking pets in known flea infested areas. Outside, pesticide treatments should target areas where pets frequent. Full sun areas do not need to be treated as fleas will not remain in these areas. When treating for fleas, you need to treat at least two times. The second treatment should occur 10 to 14 days after the initial treatment. The

Board of Directors of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home is excited to announce the upcoming completion of a new 96-bed skilled nursing facility in Taylor, Texas. This facility will include state-of-the-art skilled nursing services, memory care, and an outstanding therapy rehabilitation center. This new facility is scheduled to begin providing health care services to individuals in August 2016. For almost 60 years, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor has provided quality longterm care for the elderly population in this community and its surrounding area. Maintaining an excellent reputation among the general population, the Rest Home continues to maintain an occupancy rate that exceeds 98 percent. Over time, another skilled nursing facility was opened in Needville in 1972; an assisted living facility was built in Taylor in 2003 and this facility expanded in 2008; our board recently acquired another skilled nursing facility in Hillje bringing the total to four facilities where we are providing health care to residents in various locations within the state. We are reaching out to you as individuals and lodges to consider making charitable financial contributions, not only for your tax purposes, but to be a part of the excitement of the growth you would be creating in this community. Please join us in carrying on the legacy of quality care and services to the elderly that possibly you and your forefathers began in 1957. It’s getting close to convention time, and this prompts us to think about the convention back in 1956. The Rest Home Committee presented their re-

port to the delegates, and the convention approved the concept of constructing a home for the elderly. S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home was built and opened its doors in December 1957. At that time, members and lodges chose to purchase furnishings for the resident rooms, common areas, and benches. Just as members and lodges made contributions to the original facility, you have the opportunity to make a humanitarian donation for the new facility.Your donation can be a gift or it can honor/memorialize another person(s). Jerry Haisler and the Melody 5 from Temple, Texas, will play for the 32nd Annual SPJST Convention Howdy Party on Sunday, June 12 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center from 4 to 7 p.m. Band members are, left to right, Charles Mikeska - accordion, steel guitar, keyboard, vocals; Bob Haisler - bass, tuba, vocals; Terry Taylor - guitar, fiddle, vocals; Joe Morris - drums, vocals; and Jerry Haisler - bandleader - lead guitar, tenor sax, accordion, fiddle, vocals. Charles, Joe, and Jerry are members of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton, and Bob is a member of Lodge 18, Elgin.

Jerry Haisler and the Melody 5 started in the fall of 1966. That makes for almost 50 years of continuous entertainment in Central Texas. In recent years, the band recommitted itself to its Czech heritage and focused on Czech tunes that band members listened to when growing up. This combination of familiar waltzes, polkas, and classic country music has been pleasing to fans and dancers across a variety of venues and events in Central Texas. The band has played many, many weddings and anniversaries; often following up with a 25th, 40th, or 50th anniversary dance or a wedding for the children of the original bride and groom. In 1969, the Melody 5 was a back-up band for the legendary Bob Wills. From 1978 to 2012, the band recorded three CDs, four cassettes, a VHS polka video, and two DVDs with Mollie B. Jerry Haisler started playing saxophone and guitar at the age of 10 with his dad Bob Haisler, an accordion player, and Alice Sulak who ran the local dance venue, Tom Sefcik Hall in Seaton, Texas. Alice, who is a mem-

ber of Lodge 47, Seaton, played saxophone and drums. Fans often thought Alice was Jerry’s mother. Alice and Jerry played together for almost 50 years! “A good friend to all the band members,” Jerry says, “she was certainly a mentor to me as well as Charles Mikeska, our accordion player.” Bobby Haisler, Jerry’s nephew and grandson of Bob Haisler, started playing drums with the band when he was 13. He is currently the band’s bass player. Jerry’s son Mark Haisler played bass guitar and rhythm guitar from time to time. Bob Haisler, played in the Melody 5 until he was 92 years old. Jerry’s uncle, L.P. (Slim) Haisler (Slim Haisler and Playboys), also played accordion, and he occasionally played with Jerry and Bob at events and dances. Jerry Haisler and the Melody 5 is a family-oriented band that is proud to be a part of the polka music experience in Texas. They look forward to playing for the Howdy Party at the SPJST Convention. —SPJST—

A total of 162 of the most awesome vehicles in the Central Texas area—plus 12 sponsor vehicles—were displayed at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall on Saturday, May 7. It was a perfect car show day with lots of sun! And, the hall and grounds were filled with hundreds and hundreds of spectators throughout the day. The Czech Heritage Celebration included several folklife demonstrations hosted by the Czech Heritage Museum. The Praha Bros. entertained for everyone’s listening and dancing pleasure. Vendors, children’s activities hosted by SPJST Education and Nature Center, kolache eating contest, silent auction,

President’s Volunteer Service Award

“I ask you to seek a common good beyond your comfort . . . to serve your nation, beginning with your neighbor. I ask you to be citizens: citizens, not spectators; citizens, not subjects; responsible citizens, building communities of service and a nation of character.” —President George W. Bush

About the Award In 2003, President Bush created the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to find ways to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our nation. The council brings together leaders from the worlds of business, entertainment, sports, education, government, nonprofit, and the media. State Duchess: Fun at SPJST Car Show in Seaton

Dear Readers, This is your State Duchess Makayla Newsom. I had a fun time at the SPJST Car Show at Lodge 47, Seaton. I helped serve breakfast tacos early in the morning. Then I walked around to all the booths. Since our State King and State Queen were not able to be there, State Duke Seth and I got to pick our favorite cars. I also got to dance beseda that afternoon. I even entered the kolache eating

contest. At the awards ceremony, Seth and I handed out trophies to the winners. I hope to see you in Ennis at the National Polka Festival. I will be in the parade and the kolache eating contest. Your State Duchess, Makayla Newsom Lodge 48, Beyersville —SPJST—

ated the President’s Volunteer Service Award Program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service to others. It encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation and inspires others to make volunteering a central part of their lives. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is a Presidential recognition program for Americans of all ages, who contribute a significant amount of time to volunteer service. The program recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard - measured by the number of hours served over a 12month period.

Guidelines To earn an award, individuals, families and groups must keep a record of volunteer activities and hours served. This Record of Service may be kept as a diary or calendar or tracked online using the USA Freedom Corps Record of Service. Individuals must submit their records to the State Youth Director who will review and verify their records and order and distribute the award. To be recognized, service activities should meet national or community needs in the areas of youth

achievement, parks and open spaces, healthy communities, and public safety and emergency response. Activities should be unpaid and may not include court-ordered community service. Only one award may be received for the previous year of service.

Flag Day Activities

Flag Day occurs every June 14 and is a great time to celebrate the symbol of America. Here are some fun activities. Dress in the Colors of the American Flag Wear your favorite red, white, and blue attire on Flag Day. A red shirt, blue pants, and white shoes? Sure, why not? Or, if you’re feeling crafty, purchase plain white tee-shirts and decorate them with red and blue paint.

Create a Trivia Game Write down Flag Day trivia on plain index cards and create a game out of it. Have your family answer questions such as “how many red stripes are on the American Flag?” or “when did the United States add a 50th star?” For every question answered correctly, that person earns a point. At the end of the game, whoever earned the most points get his or her choice of ice cream, a favorite American treat!

Review Proper Flag Protocol Make sure you understand how special the flag is and how it should be treated and displayed. Learn how to fold the flag and what each fold represents.

Bake an Edible Flag Create a simple cake (any flavor from a boxed brand or from scratch if there’s a recipe you prefer), as long as it’s in a rectangular-shaped baking pan. Cover completely with white icing, add blueberries, raspberries, and white icing piped as striped in be-

In Memory of Richard Hlavenka

Our loving husband and Papa, dedicated Marine, diligent farmer, cancer survivor, and family comedian Richard J. Hlavenka was called to be with Lord in the early morning of Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Waco, leaving behind many family members, loved ones, and irre- Richard Hlavenka placeable memories. A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 31 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West with visitation following until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West with Reverend Boniface Onjefu as celebrant. Military graveside rites followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, conducted by West Veterans Honor Guard. Richard was born in West on August 2, 1927, to Tom and Frances (Hutyra) Hlavenka. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and West High School prior to entering the United States Marine Corps. After completing basic training at Camp Pendleton, Richard transferred overseas to serve his country in China post-World War II. After finishing his troop’s mission, and with newly-acquired Chinese language “skills,” he returned to West to marry childhood sweetheart Annie Pavlas on August 1, 1949. Richard was a career farmer and later enjoyed assisting customers at Nemecek’s Meat Market and West Hardware. Richard was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, where he served as an usher for several years. He was a proud and active member of SPJST Lodge 54, West from which he received the Lifetime Achiever Award in 2004; KJT Lodge 31; VFW Post 4819; and American Legion. His favorite pastimes involved attending and supporting his granddaughters in their school activities, and he never missed an opportunity to tell others how proud

he was of their accomplishments. He was preceded in death by his parents Tom and Frances Hlavenka; sister Lillian Kudelka and husband Ernest; brothers Alvin “Slick” Hlavenka and wife Evelyn and Tommy “Sonny” Hlavenka; mother and father in-law, Frank and Lillie Pavlas; sisterin-law Lillie Smajstrla and husband George; and nephew George Smajstrla, Jr. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Annie Hlavenka of West; granddaughters Lauren Ferrero of San Antonio and Leanna Sexton and husband Colby of Elm Mott; nephews Tommy Hlavenka and wife Connie of West, Kenneth Kudelka of West, and James Kudelka and wife Judy of West; nieces Sharon Wilson and husband Rory of Waco, Cyndi Lair and husband Rob of Whitney, and Denise Muska of West; and several great-nieces and great-nephews, relatives, and friends. Although Richard was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, he fought and won his battle in order to meet greatgrandson Garrett Richard Sexton in January 2016. He gained the strength to hold Garrett independently for the first time shortly before he went to Heaven. Pallbearers were James Kudelka, Brian Muska, Dean Muska, Bill Hlavenka, Kevin Hlavenka, and Billy Pavelka. Honorary pallbearers were Dan Pratka, Bernard Gerik, Burl Shelton, Kevin Chupik, Sam Polansky, Roy Hutyra, and Rory Wilson. Učme se Česky Let us Study Czech Lekce první Lesson 1 Česka abeceda Czech alphabet

The Czech language has one of the most phonetic alphabets of all in the Indo-European languages of the world. There are 31 characters plus q, x, and w which are used only in foreign words.

The letters of the Czech alphabet are patterned on the Latin alphabet which has been expanded by the use of diacritical marks, called čárka, kroužek, a háček to create additional sounds.

Get your parents, grandparents, relatives, or friends to help you with the pronunciation; do them together. Clip and save each lesson, and compile them into notebook form, if you desire. Set aside a regular time each week for the study of these lessons. The following is a list of the Czech letters that represent separate sounds in the language: Letters — Approximate Pronunciation in English
