My American Freedom Tanner Wood • Lodge 49, Rowena 2016 Flag Day Essay Contest Winner

Congratulations to Tanner Wood, 11, of Lodge 49, Rowena for submitting the winning essay, “My American Freedom” in SPJST’s 2016 Flag Day Essay Contest. Tanner is the son of Butch and Becky Wood and makes his home in Rowena. For his efforts, Tanner will be receiving a $100 Visa gift card. Congratulations to Tanner for submitting the winning essay, and Tanner Wood thanks to all SPJST youth for participating in this year’s contest. Tanner’s winning entry which appears below was presented during the Flag Day program at the 32nd SPJST Convention in Killeen, Texas.

What does freedom mean? Freedom means the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. My American Freedom allows me to speak on what I believe. I may argue with others and have different beliefs than others but that is okay. We can believe different things. The First Amendment states freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. We talked about this at school. I have the freedom to go to whatever church I want to go to and to be in whatever organizations I want to be in. I can have my own friends and not be told who to be friends with. Some countries don’t have the freedom like I do. When I get older, I have the freedom to vote. Many countries don’t get this freedom. Many countries tell you who to worship and how to worship. I have this freedom in America. I love my American Freedom. I love the country I live in and all my rights.

T

he 32nd SPJST Convention has come and gone. The quadrennial event began on Sunday, June 12 with a howdy party and ended on Wednesday, June 15 following elections of state officials and district directors and standing committees. A total of 214 delegates deliberated By-Law and Finance Committee recommendations and discussed SPJST’s governance. One of the major discussion topics at the convention was whether delegates would continue electing the vice president and secretary-treasurer’s positions at future conventions or for the Supreme Lodge to begin hiring the positions. Delegates voted and approved to continue electing the positions. We welcome two new Supreme Lodge members - Vice President Hiram Dixon of Lodge 183, Arlington and District Five Director Bradley Stavinoha of Lodge 81, Needville. In addition, the financial secretary’s position has been added as a voting member of the Supreme Lodge. Thanks to the delegates who served at this convention. Thank you to all committee members and to everyone else who helped with the convention for their work and preparation. It is appreciated. A big thanks to the Home Office staff members who worked at the convention. I had an opportunity to see firsthand what goes on behind the

convention floor scenes. Our staff kept it all together and were always ready and willing to help in any way possible. Great job! Special thanks to the delegates for reelecting me to serve as Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication. I look forward to another exciting four years! Next week’s June 29 Vestnik will be a special post-convention issue and will not be a regular Vestnik. All by-law changes and information from the convention will be presented in this issue. We will also share photos from the four days of activities.

Heartfelt Sympathy We extend sincere sympathy to SPJST Home Office receptionist Tamara Gettys. Tamara’s mother Melvina (Melba) Knott passed away on June 12, 2016. Services were Thursday June 16 at ScanioHarper Funeral Home in Temple. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tamara and her family.

Youth Achievement Days Youth Achievement Days (YAD) begin this Saturday, June 25 in District Three at Lodge 183, Arlington and in District Seven at Comal County Fair Grounds in New Braunfels. Best wishes to all youth competing in these very special events. —SPJST—

From the SPJST Foundation

SPJST Foundation asks you to “Clean Out Your Barn”

Your SPJST Foundation, a tax-exempt, non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, is off and running, and we would like to invite you to our Clean Out Your Barn Statewide Auction. The farm and ranch auction will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter. Tax-deductible proceeds will benefit SPJST Education and Nature Center, Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, and the SPJST Foundation Capital Fund. This auction has no buyer’s fees, and an online auction link will be available by September 1 to view and bid on these auction items, if you are not available to attend the September 17 auction. The statewide auction will be conducted by Trey Gallaway owner/auctioneer of Central Texas Auction Services of Belton Texas, license no. 12798. Trey has more than 18 years of experience in farm, ranch, heavy and industrial equipment, automobiles and trucks, and commercial, residential and acreage auctions. Trey placed in the top 10 auctioneers in the 2010 World Auctioneers Championship contest and was awarded the title 2013 Automobile Auctioneers World Champion. Prior to our farm and ranch auction in September, we will be needing several member volunteers from each district, to assist with the auction by picking up donated items from members in your respective districts and

delivering them to the auction site at the ENC. We also need a SkyLift or tractor with pallet forks the week prior to the sale to accept and remove donated items from trailers. Giving an honorary or memorial contributed item to our auction is a generous and thoughtful way to recognize a person’s life and accomplishments and may offer you and your estate an income tax deduction plus reduction or elimination of long-term capital gains tax. While all items donated, no matter how small, will be graciously accepted, items preferred in this farm and ranch auction include: • • • • • •

• • • • • •

Farm Equipment and Implements Tractors, Dozers and Graders Mowers and Shredders Stock, Flatbed and Water Trailers Diesel and Water Storage Tanks Firearms, Antiques and Collectibles Trucks and Cars Boats and Watercrafts Travel Trailers and RVs Four Wheelers and UTVs Building and Fencing Materials Real Estate including Farms, Ranches, Acreage, Buildings, and Homes

If you would like to volunteer to help pick up donated items in your respective districts, have any questions, or would like more information on this farm and ranch auction, please contact me by emailing JamesL@spjst.com or calling 800-727-7578. Lodge 18, Elgin shares member news

We are at the end of another school year. Good luck to all you great young ladies and gentlemen. We wish the very best to you. We know that all of you are not interested in college. Remember the options—trade school. There is a great need in many fields. So many of you are so talented. Taylor High School had their prom at Elgin SPJST hall, and what a wonderful job they did on decorations. I know that is as close to Paris as I will get. The Eiffel Tower looked great . . . thank you for leaving it for the dance on Sunday. Everyone really did enjoy it. There were many pictures taken. We always hear about the bad. It’s time we give the good some attention. Great job, Taylor! The hall looked wonderful. We are waiting to hear from the scholarship applicant so that we can present the money to the school of choice.

Bar Help Needed There is still so much to do around the hall. Things are slowly getting done. Thanks to the hard work of the trustees. We have rentals coming up. Can you help with the bar? We sure could use some help. David, Charles, and F.L. have been attending the delegates’ meetings preparing for the convention. Reading the Vestnik, there are many issues to be addressed. Thank you to all delegates for your work and for taking such a great interest in the future of SPJST. When you put confidence in a unreliable person, it’s like walking on a lame foot. so yet – and to make it a practice to monitor weather conditions and to heed directives from their local officials.” “It is critical that Texans have an established hurricane plan and emergency kit in place before a hurricane or tropical storm ever forms or enters the Gulf of Mexico,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Advance preparation is a critical game-changer in helping protect lives and property, and we urge residents to remind their family, friends and neighbors of this lifesaving step.” All Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastal areas are subject to hurricanes or tropical storms. It is possible for a storm to severely impact our state, even prior to or without making direct landfall in Texas. Additionally, the rainbands associated with a tropical system have an extremely wide reach, so monitoring changing weather conditions during hurricane season is critically important for all Texans. Hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage to coastlines, and winds can vary from 74 to 157 miles per hour (or higher). In addition, hurricanes and tropical storms can also spawn tornadoes, create dangerous coastal water conditions including storm surges along the coast, and cause extensive damage from flooding. Here are several measures residents can take now to prepare for potential storms: • Assemble an emergency kit that includes essential documents, supplies and provisions.

• Review hurricane evacuation maps, and select a route for you and your family.

In Memory of Adolf E. Motal

Adolf E. Motal, 88, of Victoria, Texas, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2016. He was born May 27, 1927, on a farm in Breslau, Texas, to the late Adolph A. and Konstantina Kocian Motal. He later grew up with five brothers and a sister on a farm in Moulton. Adolf graduated as salutatorian from Komensky High School in Komensky. As a young man in 1946, Adolf E. Motal Adolf proudly served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater on board the USAT E.T. Collins as a pharmacist mate. He retired as a bookkeeper from Texas Iron Works after 45 years of dedicated and loyal service. He often worked multiple jobs to provide for his wife and family. Adolf was married for 54 years to Valeria Pesna Motal until she passed away in 2003; they sacrificed to send all five of their children to Catholic schools. He always valued education and taught as a teacher when he was only 17 years old. Adolf valued his Czech heritage, and this led him to be an advocate for the Czech language and culture. Since 1952, he was very involved in SPJST. He sold SPJST Life Insurance for many years, which earned him numerous sales awards, including District Six Sales Champion. As a founding charter member of SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria, Adolf held several board positions including president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. While attending the University of Houston as a student, he taught Czech and Russian language classes. After retirement, he continued teaching the Czech language in Hallettsville and Victoria to children and adults who were interested to learn the language. It was a joy for him to assist anyone who needed to translate manuscripts into English. In 1973, Adolf continued his passion for “all things Czech” by organizing and co-founding along with Vlasta Svoboda, the Czech Singers of Victoria. He spearheaded the group to record three LP albums and cassette tapes. The group traveled and sang at Czech festivals all across Texas for years. This was a true joy to him, and he was happy to have his family in-

volved with him. Adolf also enjoyed collecting stamps and coins. As a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Adolf for many years attended the earliest Sunday mass with his family. He enjoyed serving his parish by volunteering to work at the parish fall festivals. He was a 3rd Degree and honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1329 with 50 years of service and a life member of VFW Post 4146. Adolf spent the last nine and one-half years at Cuero Nursing and Rehab in Cuero. He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 54 years, Valeria Pesna Motal; son Adolf John Motal;

and brothers Theodore, Benjamin, George, and Jaroslav “Jerry” Motal. Survivors include daughters Catherine Bettge (Richard) of Meyersville, Rebecca Richardson (Johnny) of Victoria, Gayle Hill (Steven) of Houston, and Mary Elizabeth Byers (Kevin) of Sharpsburg, Georgia; brother I. John Motal; sister Lydia Claybrook; grandchildren Jason Motal (Caryn), Eric Motal (Natalie), Lisa Bettge Kincart (Barry), Angie Bettge Arnold (Todd), Chris Bartsch (Carrie), Kendra Richardson Baldera (Joe, deceased), John Thomas Richardson, Bryan Richardson (Krystyn), Sarah Hill, Emily Hill, Michael Hill, Ashley Byers, Lauren Byers, Mathew Byers, and Christopher Byers; great-grandchildren Morgan and Amelia Motal, Lincoln and Justine Kincart, Jack and Anna Arnold, Carissa and Carlie

Bartsch, Joseph and Jacquelyn Baldera and Jackson, Parker and Brinkley Richardson; and many nieces, nephews, and relatives. The family held a visitation from 9 to 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 20 at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral followed by a rosary that was recited at 9:30 a.m. and the funeral mass at 10 a.m. with Reverend Kristopher Fuchs officiating. Burial was held at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Praha with full military honors. Vice president Wilburn Willis zahájil schůzi a přivítal přítomné členstvo. Zastupoval našeho presidenta Freddie Kalužu. Složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí. Dále jsme uctili památku zemřelých Barbary Henderson O´Rear, Camellia Anna Taylor a Richarda Hlavěnky. Richard J. Hlavěnka se narodil 2. srpna 1927 a zemřel 28. května 2016 v Baylor Scott and Whitte nemocnici ve Waco, Tx. 150-year-old wine found in Czech castle to be auctioned

The collection, stashed beneath the floorboards of the Beaufort-Spontin family’s Becov castle, could fetch almost £1m

The song describes how a little beaver gets ready to go to bed: he plays for a while, then he drinks a glass of milk, washes his ears, and brushes both his right and left tooth. Soon after, he is fast asleep, or as we say in Czech — spí jako dub — a phrase which literally translates he is sleeping like an oak. Notice that the phrase uses the verb spinká instead of spí, which is what little children or their mothers would say. There are many other ways of saying that someone is sound asleep. The closest translation would be tvrdě spí, but we can also say spí jako dřevo — he is sleeping like a log; spí jako by ho do vody hodil — he is sleeping as if thrown into water; or spí jako zabitý — he is sleeping as if he’d been killed. The song ends by an appeal to children: please, do just like the little beaver and march off to bed — pochodujte do hajan — a phrase that could be translated as hit the sack or hit the hay. The word hajany is derived from the verb hajat, a child’s way of saying to sleep. We also commonly use the idiom — jít na kutě — though no one really knows what kutě means and no dictionary seems to offer a clear explanation. And I am afraid that’s all we have time for in this edition of SoundCzech. I hope I haven’t put you to

They sat beneath the floorboards for decades – silent, fermenting witnesses to aristocratic opulence, Nazi rule, cold war espionage, and American fortune hunters. But Czech authorities have discovered a 150-year-old wine collection secretly stashed in a medieval Czech monastery after the second world war and found almost 40 years later is now worth more than €1.1m (£840,000). The 133 bottles of wine, which date mostly between 1856 and 1899, once belonged to the wealthy BeaufortSpontin family who lived in Becov castle, but fled to Belgium after the war ended, accused of being Nazi sympathizers. Before the family escaped, they stashed the valuable wine under the floor of the chapel to keep it from plundering solders – and possibly with the hope of one day returning for their collection. But after the Czech government, who had taken possession of the monastery in 1946, was given a tip-off that valuable treasures were hidden in the house, authorities began searching the property and stumbled upon the cache of buried wine. The 133 bottles had remained, forgotten, in state possession since 1985 but interest in the wine was recently renewed after a decision to put it up for auction. Greg Lambrecht, the creator of Coravin – an instrument which can

test aged wines without fully opening them – was invited to taste the bottles, deem them drinkable, and validate their quality. Lambrecht was given 14 bottles to test – some labelled and others a mystery – and described the experience of drinking 150-year-old wine as “extraordinary,” with some bottles “truly life-changing.” In order to make sure

he did no damage to the lavish bottles, Lambrecht even designed a special version of his Coravin tool, with an ultra thin needle to pierce the cork. He said: “These wines were in pristine condition, they were all perfect. From the first glass to the last that I poured, my hands were shaking. They are an encapsulation of history; this wine has lived through two world

wars, was seized by a communist government from a fascist government from a monarchy before that and are now released in a democracy. And literally, they were the best wines of my life.” Lambrecht said the wines encapsulated the change in tastes from the 1800s, having discovered that many of the wines were either sweet or fortified, such as port and sherry. Some in the collection are also the only existing bottles left in the world, including the last three bottles of the 1899 Chateau d’Yquem. He singled out an 1896 Chateau d’Yquem and an unlabelled bottle whose contents tasted “like flowers

And I thought to myself, ‘I have no idea how much they are going to auction these wines for, but if there was any way I could buy a bottle, I would pay everything I have’.” The wine collection was not the only valuable treasure hidden in the castle’s walls and uncovered by Czech authorities in 1985, after the family
