Lodge 177, Academy Gives $13,155 to Local Volunteer Fire Departments
From accents on english Newsletter of the Department of English at Arizona State University Spring-Summer 2016 Volume 19, Issue 2 By Larry Ellis
Beginning in February 2017, Arizona State University Department of English PhD candidate T r a v i s Franks will spend 11 months in Queensland, Australia, funded by a Fulbright U.S. Student Aw a r d , Travis Franks s t u d y i n g of Lodge 29, Taylor country literature and music. Franks will conduct research for his dissertation, tentatively titled “Rethinking Settler Nativism: Settler Colonial Origins of Anti-Immigrant Nativism.” He describes his project as “a comparative analysis” of U.S. and Australian literary representations that focuses on not only traditional genres of prose, poetry, and historiography, but on music and oral tradition as well. “This work,” he writes, is the first of its kind to link anti-immigrant nativism to the elimination of native populations
Lodge 177, Academy presented checks last week to five area volunteer fire departments at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Pictured are, left to right, Justin Jackson of Troy VFD, David Borders and Gary Wilder, in back, of Little River VFD, Lodge 177 Treasurer Josie Mitchell and Lodge 177 President Otis Beck, Aline Junek of Buckholts VFD, Ernest Stroud of Rogers VFD, James Junek of Buckholts VFD, Ritz Mize of Moffat VFD, and SPJST President Brian Vanicek. Lodge 177’s hometown fire department received $5,155, and the neighboring departments received checks for $2,000 each. Hats off to Lodge 177 for its generosity and supporting the local communities.
through the concept of settler nativism, a term that has previously only been used to understand how settler populations appropriate native symbols and customs in an attempt to see themselves as an indigenous population. Franks’ Australian research will begin with archival study at the University of Queensland/Brisbane, where he will intern with AustLit, recognized as “the premier digital archive of Australian literature.” The archive will give Franks access not only to Anglo print literature but to the catalogued oral traditions of the continent’s aboriginal peoples. During his internship, Franks

plans to volunteer as a tutor for the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation. Next, he will travel to the small town of Texas (yes, you read that right), three and a half hours southwest of Brisbane. Apart from the irony that Franks is a native Texan, he hopes to draw comparisons between the settler experience in Texas, Queensland, to that in Texas, U.S.A. “Here,” he writes, “I will explore how the axiom “The Spirit of Texas” came to be meaningful in both places and how that meaning results from similar origin stories.” Serving as an unpaid volunteer to a local historian

will aid him in researching these stories, as will an especially interesting phase of his project: attending and performing at the Texas Country Music Roundup, held every September in Texas, Queensland. Franks, a self-described “third-generation musician,” sees the Roundup as a crucial phase of his project:
The interviews and observations I am able to conduct at the Roundup will factor directly into one of my dissertation chapters. More importantly, I’ll

Member seeks quilt connection
I inherited an antique quilt and quilt top from my aunt Elvira Simmank Roberts. Each quilt includes 16 large blocks with an embroidered signature. They’ve been stored rather than used and are in good condition. The colors are still good. I’m guessing they’re 75-plus years old. I assume the signers were Aunt Elvira’s school friends from Red Ranger. Many of the signers are the same, with maiden names on the quilt and some married names on the quilt top. The names on the quilt (as best I can read them) include Alma Martinec, Mrs. Will Luksa, Martha Martinec, Mary Fojtec, Wilma Martinek, Antonie Bartek, Lottie Wychopen, Leona Martinec, Pauline, Luksa, Annie Salac, Helen Hurta, Miss Sydonia Marek, Bettie Zucha, and Lydia Stepan. The names on the quilt top include
Antony Bartek, Lottie Wychopen, Helen Hurta, Miss Sydonia Marek, Bettie Zucha, Agnes Janacek, Alvina A. Sebesta, Mrs. J.E. Thompson, Mrs. J.M. Stepan, Mrs. Angeline Gerza, Mrs. Irene Hluchan, Mrs. J.D. Spenser, Agnes Marek, Carmen Marek, Mageline Zucha, and Clara Salac. I’m downsizing. If one of these women was special in your life, and if you would like to take over the care and keeping of one of these items, please send me a brief letter or email explaining your connection and why it would be important to have this quilt in your family. I’ll mail either the quilt or the quilt top in reply to the first two letters I receive. If I receive no response by July 18, I’ll send them to the SPJST museum. Raymond D. Member seeks fundraising help in fight against Alzheimer’s
Dear Vestnik Readers, For the third year in a row, I am fundraising for a very important cause and am asking for your help. BvB Dallas is a non-profit group raising money and awareness in the fight against Alzheimer’s. This year is especially important to me as I have taken on an Ambassador role, which gives me the wonderful opportunity to be directly involved with our beneficiaries and organizing community outreach activities throughout the season. The marquee event put on by the organization is an annual powder puff football game between Team Blonde and Team Brunette (hence BvB) played at the Cotton Bowl, which occurs on August 13 this year. To find out more about the organization, please visit http://bvbdallas.org/about-bvb-dallas/ To donate, visit my page at: https://www.crowdrise.com/fundraiseand-volunteer/donate-desktop/project/teambrunette3/jasonhaisler/0 Some startling Alzheimer’s facts you may not be aware of:
• More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. • Projections indicate that by 2050 that number could be as large as 16 million. • Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. • There are approximately 500,000 people dying each year because they have Alzheimer’s. • One in three seniors who dies has Alzheimer’s or another dementia. • Cost of care for those with Alzheimer’s and related disease was over $124 billion in 2014. • Alzheimer’s does not currently have a cure. Primary beneficiaries of this year’s fundraising will be:
Center for BrainHealth - Phase I of their 2014 study, partially funded by BvB Dallas, suggested that strategybased mental training may have farreaching positive impacts. Phase II explores the impact of brain stimulation and utilizes advanced imaging techniques to understand the brain’s response to training, which can be ap-

Member shares scholarship, Youth Program appreciation
Dear SPJST, I would like to say thank you for the 2016 SPJST Freshman Scholarship award and also for the opportunity to be involved in the SPJST Youth Program. I have made great friends and memories through my years of involvement with SPJST, and I will truly miss being a part of the youth club. SPJST is a great organization, and I am thankful that my parents got me involved in it. In a couple of days, I will be attending the New Student Conference at Texas A&M University. On July 5, I will move into the dorms on campus, and my first day of summer classes is July 6. I am both nervous and excited about this next chapter in my life. I am looking forward to the independence of being away from home, and at the same time, I am scared about new responsibilities and paying bills! The scholarship award I have received from SPJST will definitely help

July Fraternal Updates
Reserve rooms now for Corpus Christi Get Away
Reserve Your Room Now for the End of Summer Get Away Good times are in store for you at the 10th Annual Corpus Christi Get Away! Make plans now to join old and new friends on August 12 to 14, 2016, for a fun-filled weekend. Last year, approximately 368 men, women, boys, and girls from across the state enjoyed the weekend fraternal celebration. As in years past, SPJST rooms are blocked at the Emerald Beach Hotel in Corpus Christi. As of June 27, there were 51 rooms with doubles available for both Friday and Saturday and 10 rooms with king beds available. This is out of the 150-room block that was set aside for the event. If you have not already done so, please make your reservations as soon as possible by calling the hotel at 361-883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rates. Rates will change Thursday, July 28 to summer rates. If you have any problems or concerns while making your reservation, please ask to speak with Mary Alice. SPJST deep-sea fishing excursion is on Friday morning, August 12, in conjunction with the End of Summer Get Away. Due to popular demand, we have been able to upgrade our boat to the New Kingfisher! Check out the flyer with information on the excursion. We now have 28 openings available at the rate of $75 per space. The 2016 celebration officially kicks off with the Friday night Aloha Party. Saturday’s events will once again include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42 dominoes, bunco, the evening award presentation and “Buccaneer Ball” with music by Chris Rybak. If you and your friends are interested in joining the fishing excursion, or if you have any questions about the event in general, please contact Frank at frankh@spjst.com or call 254534-0681 to register for the excursion.
July 4, 2016 After visiting Washington, D.C., a couple of weeks ago as a chaperone for high school students and as we prepare to observe our nation’s Independence Day, I want to share two photos and some information about Independence Day. The information below can be
found on the National Archives webpage at http://www.archives.gov/press/pressreleases/2005/nr05-83.html Did you know . . . Independence Day should actually be July 2? And other little known facts about The Declaration Of Independence. Washington, D.C. . . . America’s revolutionary Charter of Freedom, the Declaration of Independence is a document upon which our nation's founding principles were established. The National Archives will celebrate the 240th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence with its traditional Fourth of July program. History lovers young and old can view the Declaration of Independence and speak with actors playing those who signed this important document! All programs are free, open to the public, and take place at the National Archives Building on Constitution Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets in N.W. Washington, D.C. The Declaration of Independence set the course for our nation on a journey of freedom, which also led this historic document on its own journey. For example, did you know . . . Who authored the Declaration of Independence? Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence, which was then edited by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. Jefferson took their edits and incorporated them into what would become the version finally adopted. Independence Day should have been July 2. July 2, 1776 is the day that the Continental Congress actually voted for independence. John Adams, in his writings, even noted that July 2 would be remembered in the annals of American history and would be marked with fireworks and celebrations. The written Declaration of Independence was dated July 4 but wasn’t actually signed until August 2. Fifty-six delegates eventually signed the document, although all were not present on that day in August. Who signed and in what order? John Hancock signed first, with a large hand right in the middle because he was the President of the Congress. The others signed by state delegation, beginning in the upper right in one column, and
VĚSTNÍK
then proceeding in five other columns, arranged from the northernmost state (New Hampshire) to the southernmost (Georgia). Who signed last? It is believed Thomas McKean of Delaware was the last person to sign. When Congress authorized the printing of an official copy with the names attached in January 1777, McKean’s name was not included. He signed after that date, or the printer made a mistake by omitting him. Here is one more fun fact. Line of Descent – Actress Reese Witherspoon is a direct descendant of John Witherspoon, one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. John Witherspoon is pictured in a Barry Faulkner Mural, entitled “The Declaration of Independence,” which illustrates 28 delegates to the Continental Congress of 1776. This newly restored mural is hanging in the Rotunda of the National Archives.

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, June 9, 2016, in the Sokol Club Room. We arrived around 8 a.m., stretched Georgia Holy’s quilt, and had quilters all around. Thank you to all who came early to help quilt. Georgia’s quilt was very pretty; it was made from her late husband’s shirts. Georgia’s grandson Collin helped her cut and sew the squares together. He has been asking her how the quilt is coming. Now, Georgia can tell him we have started working on it. Congratulations to Collin. He just graduated from Ennis High School, but hasn’t decided where he will go to college. By lunchtime, we had 22 members and one guest - Mr. Mach - Kay Lynn Kovar’s father. President Irene said grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious

lunch. Thank you, ladies, who set up and cleaned up after lunch. President Irene then called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for Theresa Kasowski, Otto Trojacek, Harlin Dauphin, MaryAnn Hajek, Sylvia Hupel, and Frankie Milan. The “Our Father” was recited by all for the above and our sick members especially Geraldine Kubin, who had surgery the morning of our meeting. We hope all is going well. Secretary Ann read the minutes of the last meeting, and Dolores gave her treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. We were glad to see Dolores as she had back surgery a few weeks ago. It was good to see her. She looked great. Ginny read a thank you note from Dolores for our get well and thinking of you cards after her surgery. Ginny also read a funny article that we all enjoyed. Sunshine Lady Dorothy announced our one and only birthday celebrant - Marie Vrla. As she was not present, we didn’t get to sing. We did sign a birthday card for Joan Strunc (her birthday will be in July) and another thinking of you card for Geraldine Kubin. Quilt scheduler Pat announced no changes in our schedule: July - we have white elephant sale and showand-tell. President Irene thanked Joan Brown for donating plates, and Libbie for the tea. No items are needed in the kitchen next month. Kay Lyn Kovar was thanked for the greeting cards, and Libbie for items for the prize drawing next month. Thank you to Dorothy Kudrna for making a beautiful wall hanging from several beautiful scarves. I don’t remember who donated the scarves, but it turned out really, really pretty. Lunch for July was discussed as we will not be able to use the kitchen. We decided to order pizza and cookies, and everyone is asked to bring their own water or cold drink. Now, I will tell you why: The Sokol gym is having a two-week instruction training course, and kids from all over are coming. They stay at Sokol day and night for two weeks while in training. They work out, eat, and sleep, and they do not leave the Sokol Hall. Someone is in the kitchen cooking three meals a day. This is a great thing for Sokol Ennis. They have
about 40 kids coming and 10 instructors from I don’t know where. Anyway, it will be great. Some of us have been asked to help in the kitchen, bake items, and do laundry for the kids. It will be a busy two weeks. Some have been asked to pick up kids at the airport then take them back to the airport after the two weeks. Everyone - that is Sokol people - will be busy. President Irene is still collecting recipes. We still don’t have recipes from everyone so members, please

call, send, or bring us a recipe or two for our book. We want you to be in it. I must tell everyone that we had delicious, warm, blueberry muffins for the morning break with coffee and fresh blueberries for lunch. They were great, and Karen, you came through on your promise. Thank you. President Irene’s tip for the day was how to fold your quilts so as not to have creases in your quilts then store them in pillow cases; it was very interesting. Lodge 154, Fort Worth Member Stars in It’s Only A Play
Lodge 154, Fort Worth member B.J. Cleveland stars in It’s Only A Play by Terrance McNally. The production runs July 15, 16, 21, 22, 22, 24, 28, 29, 30, and 31, 2016, at Kalita Humphreys Theater in Dallas. It is directed by Cheryl Denson. In It’s Only a Play, a wealthy firsttime Broadway producer, Julia Budder, is throwing an opening night party for The Golden Egg at her luxurious Manhattan home. The playwright Peter Austin, the director, the actors, along with assorted friends and hangers-on (including a critic) nervously wait for the late-night reviews printed in the newspapers. Meanwhile, they gossip and throw out the names of the celebrities who are in attendance. Virginia Noyes, the star of the show, is taking drugs. James Wicker, an old friend of the playwright, is now a successful TV actor who turned down the

lead in the play, and is relieved and secretly thrilled about the bad reviews that arrive. And, although Ira Drew is a theater critic, he is very critical of the theater because he has no talent to actually participate, despite his secretly writing plays. It’s Only a Play is alternately raucous, ridiculous and tender — and proves that sometimes the biggest laughs happen offstage. The star studded Dallas cast includes B.J. Cleveland and Chamblee Ferguson (in the roles originated by Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick on Broadway) along with Cara Serber, Shannon McGrann, Luke Longacre, Steven D. Morris, and Matt Holmes. I haven’t sewn mine yet; I hope to have them ready by the next meeting. Martha Ritchey was our 50-50 dollar winner - her first time. We are happy for you, Martha. President Irene reminded everyone that the next meeting will be Thursday, July 14. We will have an elephant sale, pizza for lunch, meeting, and showand-tell. Bring cash, priced items for sale, and new members and old, bring your special treasures to show and talk about. Don’t forget we are having a prize drawing with many nice items. Bring lots of cash.
Other News Dorothy and Wesley Prachyl attended the high school graduation of their grandson Andrew Cole in Centennial, Colorado. Their daughter-inlaw Cheryl Prachyl offered to drive them. Andrew was an honor graduate in his class of 840 at Cherry Creek High School. He will attend the University of San Diego. Andrew’s brother Adam Cole of Dana Point, California, also came for the occasion. Adam conception with Southern California swimming and water polo teams. They were also able to visit with Dorothy’s cousin, Jo Knize of nearby Englewood, and David Knize and his wife Anne of Colorado Springs. It was a very memorable week. It sounds like it and congratulations to Andrew.
Geraldine Volek has been busy attending weddings - her cousin Michale Trojacek and Anna Wavrusa at the KJT Hall, and great-nephew Daniel Valek and Abby Griffith at Sokol Hall. Congratulations to both couples. Stay well, happy, and cool, everyone. Please try and make our July 14 meeting, elephant sale, show-and-tell, prize drawing, lunch, 50-50 game and bring your recipes. Bring lots of items for the elephant sale, bring cash to purchase sale items, buy prize drawing tickets, and 50-50 dollar game. Remember, the Circle is purchasing pizza and cookies, but you are to bring your own water or cold drink. I haven’t mentioned that we will meet around 10 a.m. We hope to see you all. Fort Worth Friendship Club
The Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, June 1, 2016, in the dining room at St. Thomas Church. The meeting was called to order by President Margaret Sears. Everyone was welcomed, and the Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. The color for the month was green, and the theme was “summer.” Each table was decorated with a small plant. Our guest, Sherrill Gustarpon, joined the Club. She came last month and joined this month. We are glad to have you! She
is a St. Thomas member. Secretary Mary Ann Krivanek was going out of town and asked Libbie to take the minutes for her. She will have to tell us about her trip. Since we were having the white elephant sale, it was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the May meeting. Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox presented the financial report which was accepted as presented. Darlene Tompkins was thanked for picking up the fried chicken for lunch. Jo Ann further reported she will write a check to the church for our rent on the use of the kitchen and dining room each month. Everyone was reminded that in July, we will go out to eat at Golden Corral at 3517 Alta Mere Drive and meet at 11:30 a.m. If anyone needs a ride, call one of the officers. Anna Johnson fell at home and was in the hospital for three days before going to Azle Manor Nursing Home. Nothing was broken. Since her birthday was on a Sunday, May 29, Rita Thomas and I went to see her. She was all dressed up in a nice green dress, and we found her eating in the dining room and sitting with Linda Horner. It was so nice to see Linda. We told her we still miss her and her mother Lucille Kret. We told her that all of the ladies she always sat with have either died or they have moved. She named all of the ladies at her former table. I had to stop and think, but she had no problem in remembering them. Anna was really having a good day. She received four bouquets of flowers, and I counted 24 birthday cards she had standing around plus body lotions and bath items she received as gifts. Both Anna and Linda send greetings to all, and Anna sends her thanks for all the cards and flowers she received. The address at Azle Manor is 721 Dunaway Lane, Azle, Texas 76020. Anna is in room 311, and Linda is in room 605. Both would enjoy hearing from everyone. Anna’s cell number is 817253-3977. She loves to talk on the phone. I further reported on the death of Frankie Milan, the late Rosie Steinman’s brother. He died on May 17, just 15 days after the death of his brother Emil Milan. Frankie was one of the best fast pitch softball pitchers in Texas and had many no-hitters and one-hitters. He won many championships as both coach and player and became Softball Umpire-in-Chief of Tarrant County. Rosie, his sister, was always taking photos and loved get-

ting her picture in the news and the Vestnik. I happened to be in Ennis and picked up an Ennis Polka Festival magazine, and there on the inside back page was Rosie’s picture in her kroj. Even after her death, she keeps getting her pictures in the news and the Vestnik. President Margaret reminded all to review the guidelines, and if you have any suggestions, bring this up at the August meeting. Also August is a designated month in which we bring nonperishable items for the St. Thomas Food Pantry. Cash is also accepted. It was also announced that Patriot Paws accepts donations. If anyone would like to make a donation, give it to JoAnn, and she will make sure it gets to them. These three ladies presented the program at the last meeting which was most interesting and enjoyable. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to June celebrants - Lorraine Cross and Felma Smith. May you have many more. Door prizes were won by happy winners with Helen Skrasek and Stanley Krenek being the 50-50 dollar

It was announced that items not sold should be taken home by the donor or given to St. Thomas Church for their garage sale prior to the move to the new building. Funds from the sale will remain in the Friendship Club treasury. Don’t forget that on July 6, we will go out to eat to Golden Corral, (nothing to bring), and wear red, white, and blue. Lodge 160, San Angelo joined with the Wall Middle School CORE (Choosing Only Responsible Environments) students for a Join Hands Day project once again. This year, it was a twofold project. It involved helping children at the Rio Vista Head Start program in San Angelo and the residents at Meadow Creek Nursing Center. Eighty-three CORE students from Wall Middle School collected a total of 250 children’s books for the Rio Vista Head Start children. The Wall CORE students traveled to the Head Start campus. They read the books to the children and gave them the books to take home. Next, they interacted in an art project. The Wall students paired up with the Head Start children to create a card for the nursing home residents. All of the students enjoyed the activity!
minded of President Cathy’s announcement in May. She stated that if our members brought their favorite recipes, she would compile them into a booklet. Several members remembered to bring their submissions, so, if you are reading this article, go right now and dig out something incredible to include. Another “to do” is finding something amazing to donate to the silent auction scheduled for July. The auction can’t be successful if we don’t have trinkets to bid on. Our little auctions are always fun to see what “treasures” show up. In honor of Father’s Day, several members brought memorabilia to show and discuss. Lisa Juran brought her father’s single shot BB gun along with his photo. Pauline Morbitzer and her sister Betty Loyd displayed photos of their father Frank Zalesak. Betty also described their father’s woodworking projects. Robin
The next stop for the Wall CORE students was Meadow Creek Nursing Center. They presented the cards they had created to the residents. Then they enjoyed a fun game of bingo with the residents. What an awesome experience for the Wall students. They were able to enjoy a few hours with the young and the elderly! The Wall Middle School CORE group consists of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders who sign a pledge saying they won’t participate in underage drinking. Their parents also sign a pledge stating they won’t provide alcohol to their minor children. The CORE students will attend a camp in Kerrville this summer. Lodge 160 was happy to assist CORE with a donation of $375, which will provide three camp scholarships for the students. —SPJST—

Then it was time to sing the “Happy Birthday” song. Those recognized were Garland Ellsworth, Robin Brownlee, Frank Tesar, Doris Maple, Mildred Kidwell, Lisa Ellsworth, and Emily Atkins. Here’s wishing all of you another awesome year. Last of all, eight door prizes were awarded to the delight of eight lucky winners. Thanks to the “door prize fairy” who always remembers to bring those special somethings. In closing the meeting, Janet led

This participant observer approach is reminiscent of the work of Department of English graduates Billy Cioffi (BA 2009; MA 2015) and Henry Quintero (MFA 1995; PhD 2010) who, as both performers and musicologists, supplement their scholarship with unique perspectives drawn from personal experience. It will be interesting to see how Franks brings his own background as a performer together with his research on Australian expressions of an American musical genre, and further, how he employs all of the texts he gathers

State Youth Director shares July updates
It’s summer, and you know what that means! It’s time for SPJST District Camps, District Youth Achievement Days (YAD), State Youth Achievement Day, and last, but not least, the Corpus Christi End-of-Summer Get Away. By the time this newsletter gets to
you, Districts Three and Seven will have had their YADs. District Two YAD will be hosted by Lodge 47, Seaton on July 9; District Four will be held on July 16 at Lodge 49, Rowena; District Six YAD will be held at the Taiton Community Center on July 19; and Districts Five and One will both be held on July 24 District Five will be at Lodge 88, Houston and District One will be at the Caldwell Community Center. I look forward to seeing your talents at these events! District camps start in July as well and
our 2015-2016 State Royalty will make their final public appearance in the July 4 parade in Belton.
LITs Receive a Lesson in SPJST History Leaders-In-Training Retreat was held at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on June 9 to 11. I had a great time engaging with our youth. The main concept of the camp was to convey the responsibilities of an LIT and to learn a little about SPJST and fraternalism. This year, the youth traveled to Fayetteville - home of SPJST. A wonderful and informative tour of Fayetteville was given by Sharon Fritsch, president of Lodge 1, Fayetteville and great-granddaughter of one of SPJST’s founding fathers, J.R. Kubena. Afterwards, Lodge 1, Fayetteville allowed the LITs to use their beautiful baseball field to play a game of BubbleBall followed by a traditional Czech meal of sausage, homemade bread, sauerkraut, creamy cucumbers, and lots of goodies. The meal was provided by President Brian Vanicek, District One Director Donnie Victorick, and District Two Director Jesse Pospisil. Everyone appeared to have a great time, and the youth were able to learn about SPJST on a different level. LITs covered the importance of paying attention, enjoyed some challenge games, painted, and participated

in a panel discussion with Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny covering social media. Teens also learned how to properly fit a harness and lifejacket on another person. On Friday night, everyone enjoyed a dance and some time hanging out with new found friends. I feel that everyone was able to take something away from this LIT camp, and this is what SPJST is all about! Thanks to my assistant Tammy Martinez for all of the help and support. A big thank you to all of the District Youth Counselors, their assistants, chaperones, and nurse Ginger Ringwald who helped with the Leaders-in-Training Retreat. The Moody Crew had the winning teeshirt design, and I will be getting the shirts to the LITs hopefully before district camps. I know that many of our youth are excited about going to camp. Your District Youth Counselors and their assistants have worked many hours planning a great camp for the Leaders-in-Training, youth, and chaperones. Education and Nature Center Executive Director Jeb Lepeyrolerie and his staff are ready for our camps to begin. Let’s make this a summer that our youth will enjoy and have fond memories of the time they spent with their friends and family.

Dear Members, District Seven’s Leaders-in-Training (LITs) joined other LITs from around the state at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) on Thursday, June 9 to Saturday, June 11, 2016. They did a lot of teambuilding activities and played some games that taught them how to become better leaders. We all went to Lodge 1, Fayetteville and learned all about the history of SPJST. Bubble ball was all the hype this year, and the kids loved it! They got in a big ball and ran around
playing soccer, and of course, bumping into each other. Everyone learned good leadership skills and had a great time . . . now to apply those skills at our own district camps this summer! Fraternally, Lian Pruski District Seven Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: youth enjoys memories made Typhoon Texas at state park Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club went to Typhoon Texas Waterpark on Sunday, June 26, 2016. Everything was brand new as they just opened a few weeks ago. There were lots of fun rides for all to enjoy – The Snake Pit, The Gully Washer, The Duelin’ Daltons, and Lone Star Racers – just to name a few. I hope to go again sometime soon. Nathan G. Lodge 88, Houston youth: fun at Katy waterpark
Dear Readers, On June 8, 2016, I went with my FFA chapter to Garner State Park to float the river and make memories with lifelong friends. I spent the entire day with friends and had a great time. Even though what was supposed to be a one- and-one-half hour float turned into a three-hour float. We were all sunburned, and we almost lost each other several times. It is suffice to say that I will always remember that day and will be even closer to my already close friends. Kelly House —SPJST—
Members of Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club visited Typhoon Texas on Sunday, June 26, 2016. Typhoon Texas is the new waterpark located in Katy, Texas. The slides and the wave pool were all so much fun! I think my favorite rides were the Lone Star Racers and the LazyT. Everything was Texas-themed. The food was good. We had a great time. Jered J. Polly, Secretary —SPJST—
Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Attends Fairytale Theatre Camp
Tate Smith, a member of Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Club, attended Christian Youth Theater (CYT) Summer Camp every Monday and Tuesday in June from June 6 to 28, 2016. The children discovered the many wonders of theater through the fairy tales of The Brothers Grimm. Through such works as Billy Goats Gruff, Cinderella, Ali Baba, Hansel and Gretel, Peter and the Wolf, Beauty and the Beast,The Musicians of Bremen, and Beauty and the Beast, this class taught the basics of theater and provided the foundations of performance, while also letting their imaginations soar with funfilled games and crafts. The children performed a showcase of their rendition of Goldilocks and the Three Bears on Tuesday, June 28 for family and friends to show off everything they learned at camp. Tate played the part of Papa Bear’s coat in the showcase. CYT has helped Tate gain more confidence and the theater skills he needs for a lifetime! —Submitted by Tate’s mother, Jennifer Smith

2015 - 2016 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
Four Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2015 to May 2016 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2015-2016 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2015 to May 2016. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.
What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.
Contest Dates June 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016
Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10
What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

— J.V. Sládek —SPJST—
