When you see these numbers, what is the first thing that pops into your mind? Well, the first thing I think of is someone will say he has 20-20 vision. Or maybe you are thinking of the 2020 Convention. Well, vision doesn’t just apply to what your eyes can see, but vision can also be applied to what your mind can see. While I was on the Supreme Lodge serving as director, I told the other members that you have to see what is around the bend in the road. They looked at me kind of puzzled because no, you can’t really see around the bend. But if you imagine what could be around the bend, you are more prepared to meet whatever is there. That in a way is referred to as vision. Being that I served as a director for eight years, I am very aware of what it costs to have a convention. I am going to mention a few thoughts on how the cost of a convention could be cut down. First, I think the convention could be for only two days. You could eliminate the howdy party and have the banquet on Sunday evening. There is plenty of time to go around and talk to folks you haven’t seen in four years. Then, is it really needed to have so many delegates? You could cut out a lot of expense by changing from the present delegate requirements. Most of the delegates from a lodge usually vote the same way. Instead of an additional delegate for each 100 or 150 members, make it a delegate for each additional 250 members. Another vision is if we end up being mandated by the state insurance to hire officers, this will also cut down on the time needed for a convention. Some of my thoughts may be way off base, and if you have better ways of cutting the expense of the convention, maybe you have some thoughts that would eventually be acceptable. With the economy being what it is, what we could save on the convention expense could certainly be used in our investment plans. Bobby J. Wuensche Honorary District Two Director Lodge 48, Beyersville —SPJST—

J.R. Kubena’s great-grandson plays Horacio in Croatia

Melanie, Attached is a photo of the Dubrovnik, Croatia, newspaper showing the production of the play Hamlet by a Londonbased theater company. My son, Blake Kubena, shown on the right has a lead role as Horatio. Blake completed his master’s degree in acting in London. We are originally from Fayetteville, Texas, and now live in Clear Lake City outside of Houston. Blake currently resides in London. Blake is the greatgrandson of J.R. Kubena, one of the founding fathers of SPJST. The Croatian spelling of Vjesnik is similar to the Czech Vestnik so it kind of caught my eye. Attached are some links and photos. Glenn Kubena —SPJST—

Member offers thanks

Dear Scholarship Committee, I am writing to you today to thank you for choosing me as one of the recipients of the SPJST General Scholarship. When I found out I was receiving the scholarship, I was very happy and excited like a little kid on Christmas morning. I have worked for SPJST Lodge 88, Houston for almost three years now, and over that time period, have learned that the purpose of SPJST is not only to keep the Czech traditions of our forefathers, but also to encourage support of charitable institutions and more importantly, education. By your generosity in awarding me this scholarship, I can breathe a little easier knowing my textbooks and part of my tuition will be paid, and I can

focus more on academics. I hope one day, I will be able to help students with their financial needs like you are helping me. Thank you again for your thoughtful and generous gift. Kaitlyn Pavlicek Lodge 88, Houston —SPJST—

“Pay attention . . . or we may lose our freedom.”

“Freedom . . . guard it with your life, America,” often warned well-known Texas Gulf Coast fraternalist and late SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje member Karel Matejka, Sr. of El Campo, Texas. Karel was only 16 years old when the Vimperk, Sumava, Czechoslovakian Freedom Fighter was imprisoned by the Nazis following Germany’s occupation of the Sudentenland at the beginning of World War II. He spent almost eight years of his youth as a forced laborer in Hitler’s infamous concentration camps. He was freed in 1946 by General George S. Patton’s United States Army and returned to his Czechoslovakian Karel Matejka homeland where he opened a bakery and grocery store. Karel became outspokenly critical of Post War Russian-imposed Communism that was being forced on the freedom-loving Czechs. Czechoslovakia’s pre-World War II democratic government had been patterned after the United States of America. After learning in 1948 that his business was to be nationalized by the Communists and the impending threat of imprisonment again “as an enemy of the State,” Karel and his wife, Gizela, escaped overnight to western Germany. Bishop John L. Morkovsky learned of their plight as displaced European refugees and arranged for the Matejkas to come to Houston in 1950 under the National Catholic Refugees Program. Karel and his wife were warmly welcomed into the greater Houston American-Czech community including the old SPJST Lodge 88, Houston on Studewood Drive. He was active in the Houston Sokol movement and other benevolent Slavic organizations such as Western Fraternal Life. The gifted singer and musician had a vast repertoire of

authentic Czech folk songs. The accomplished accordionist and drummer also loved to polka dance. He formed a Houston band which played at many special celebrations including a downtown El Campo street dance and “All Nations Festival” in 1962 when the city became “Capital of Texas for 24 hours” as designated by “Governor-for-a-Day” Culp Krueger, President Pro Tempore of the Texas Senate at that time and owner of KULP Radio and the El Campo Leader-News-Svoboda. A member of the SPJST Lodge 88 Choral Group and Drama Club, he was cast in major roles of many Czech language divadlos — theatrical presentations including operettas such as Kmoch’s “Muziky, Muziky” and other entertaining Czechoslovakian dramas and comedies staged at Lodge 88 and in other Texas communities. Karel was honored in 1999 as one of the founders of the Saints Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival, which is one of Houston’s oldest ethnic festivals. He often expressed his worry that many Americans are apathetic about the precious liberty he and his wife finally enjoyed in Texas. “We must pay attention or one day, we may lose our freedom here,” cautioned Karel on July 4, 2003, when he single-handedly staged an Independence Day event in El Campo after learning no local public observance was scheduled. One of his happiest days was on November 12, 1958, when he became a naturalized United States citizen. His Czech citizenship had been revoked by the Communists, but President Vaclav Havel re-instated it in 2000 so Karel held dual citizenship during his final years. Karel passed away on Friday, June 2, 2006, on his 83rd birthday. Editor’s Note: This article was originally submitted by Chuck and Joanna Schwartzkopf of Lodge 40, El CampoHillje. Lodge 88, Houston member Tom Marek requested that the article be reprinted. “Having known Karel helps understand how he treasured his freedom,” Tom writes. —SPJST—

Districts Two/Six Camp July 21 to 24 at SPJST ENC

Dear Districts Two and Six Campers, We are really excited about the 2016 “Seeking the Treasures of SPJST” camp theme. A lot is planned for campers of all ages. Camp will begin on Thursday, July 21 and complete on Sunday, July 24. We are asking that chaperones and Leadersin-Training (LITs) arrive at 10:45 a.m. to prepare for your group’s arrival at 11:15 a.m. All youth and LITs are asked to wear their swimsuits, bring along a cover-up, and towel upon arrival at camp. After the completion of registration, the swim test will take place. Other campers are asked not to arrive earlier than 11:15 a.m. and no later than 12:15 p.m. unless special arrangements have been made with your DYC. Registration will be held at the pavilion. Parents or those dropping off campers must stay until all registration has been completed for each camper. All marked medication must be turned in to the nurse in the original bottle, in a clear plastic bag. There should only be enough medication for the time needed at camp. All cell phones, any electronic devices which includes iPods, Nintendo DS and MP3 players, radios, and headsets must not be brought to camp. All cell phones, other than those of chaperones, will be taken up at registration if brought on camp grounds. This rule is for all campers and LITs. If any of the above is recovered, a call may be made to the parents by the DYC. Districts Two and Six will not be responsible for any lost or damaged items. Cameras must be marked and turned in to the chaperone.

Please do not bring any food or drinks. Plenty will be provided.

Things To Bring To Camp r Twin sheets, pillow, light blanket r Towels and wash cloths for 4 days r Personal articles: (Toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, hairbrush) r Clothes for 5 days, including undergarments (includes 1 extra set) r Tennis shoes - closed toe shoes 2 pair if wearing one in pond r Flip flops only to be worn to pool r Bag for dirty clothes with child’s name written on it r Shaving cream (non-menthol) - turn in at registration r Sunscreen r 2 Swimsuits - 1 for pond and 1 for pool (no string or tied bikinis) r Tee-shirt cover-up r Beach towel r Flashlight r Jeans or long pants for horseback riding (new this year)

Please Label Everything! A good suggestion for helping the younger campers: Place one day of clothing in a marked, plastic bag. This will be tremendous help in getting reading for the early morning. Here is a list of some of the planned activities: swimming, horseback riding, the blob, high/low ropes course, paddle boats, kayaking, rifle range, bow and arrows, hayride, crafts, waterslide, scavenger hunts, music, dancing, games, and so much more! Please contact your DYC if you have any questions. Parents, again, thank you for allowing us to spend quality time with your child. Every SPJST youth is special in their own way and many “treasured memo-

ries” will be made at camp this year. See you on Thursday, July 21 at SPJST ENC! Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela patsyk2011@yahoo.com District Six Youth Counselor lisa_bubela@yahoo.com Cristy Girod, Amber Bartek and Susan Siptak Assistant DYCs —SPJST—

2015 District Three Queen Shares Farewell Speech

Speech Delivered at District Three Youth Achievement Day on June 25, 2016 at Lodge 183, Arlington

Good Day, Family, Friends, and Distinguished Judges, How many times have we heard that today, am I right? Well, I’ll try to get my point across while keeping it short as possible. I know we are all anxious to know who will be the next queen. So first, I want to thank everyone who helped me get to where I am now. The way I see it, every single person we meet pushes us in a certain direction. One of the most important persons would be my past youth leader - the late District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr. She was more than these titles to everyone. She was a friend and mother to most people in this room, and I wanted to win for her. Second, I want to talk about this thing on my head that the beautiful young ladies and little girls in the audience want . . . this crown. I want all of you to know what it means. Today, I am wearing the crown I received during my last year as Lodge 84 Queen. I was selected Lodge 84 Queen by selling the most raffle tickets aka raising the most money for my lodge . . . something small that actually does a lot. I hope that as District Three and Lodge 84 Queen, I have done a lot of small, but meaningful things for most of you here because that is what it is all about—positively influencing or pushing people in a direction on their path of becoming a better person. It is more than a crown, a title, and even more than a chance to get a scholarship at State YAD. As a queen, you are a role model, and you have to show the young ones that you can be different and express yourself in your style of hair and personalities. You have to help others in your community and show the kids how great it makes you feel when you make someone’s day or life a little brighter. You have to show them that they do have the power to break judgements of those closeminded people and get the respect they deserve. As a woman and as a queen, we must teach young girls and boys that self-respect is not defined by clothing or other uses of self-expression. It is not even about certain actions or past mistakes. It is about loving yourself, and

that is it. We must show people that we love them because it will help them love themselves. Sometimes, loving yourself is hard so they need us. As a queen and an SPJST member, you have to look around and notice that we as an organization are getting smaller. Fix that, please. Bring friends, get more of your family involved, spread the word so we can enrich the lives of more and more people. We have to keep it going and continue becoming better, helping others, being fraternal, continue being more than a title, more than a crown, more than an LIT, more than a member, more than a DYC or youth leader. To all the queens and kings, let’s make our Mama Bessie proud. Melinda McClellan 2015-2016 District Three Queen Lodge 84, Dallas —SPJST—

2015 District Three Queen Melinda McClellan, right, crowns 2016 District Three Queen Makenzie Nelson of Lodge 25, Ennis. Melinda is a recent graduate of Lakeview Centennial High School.
