Supreme Lodge welcomes new members
Fraternalism
by Mildred Holeman Lodge 88, Houston
SPJST Supreme Lodge met last week at the Home Office in Temple and welcomed two new members who were elected at the 32nd Convention held in June. Vice President Hiram Dixon, second from left, and District Five Director Bradley Stavinoha, second from right, are pictured with senior board members District Seven Director Bob Bayer, left, and District One Director Donnie Victorick.
At our recent 32nd Convention, I witnessed something so important that I felt moved to share it. It was the thing most treasured and strengthening for an organization such as ours: Fraternalism. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines fraternalism as “made up of members who share an interest or purpose.” That is exactly what we are. We share interests, and we share a purpose. We may not always agree on just how to pursue those shared interests or just how to accomplish our shared purpose, but in the end, we come together for the good of the organization.
What I witnessed was two of our members who opposed each other to serve in an office. Note the key word: serve. They did not seek power for themselves, nor did they stoop to dirty tricks to one-up the other just to “win” an election. They genuinely campaigned for the opportunity to serve in the way they deemed best. Hiram Dixon and Delisle Doherty, who ran for Vice President, exhibited the true spirit of fraternalism that we need so much in SPJST to solidify our future. They even sat together and visited prior to the election. And when the election was over, neither was a loser because both were motivated by the

PJST’s awesome state youth event is coming very quickly, and I hope that you are planning to spend Saturday, August 6 celebrating the dynamic youth of our great organization! Details are included on page 4, and a schedule appears on the back page of this week’s Vestnik. The area around Interstate 35 in Temple is still under construction. Just think how wonderful our city will be in a few years when this is completed! In the meantime, please plan ahead as you travel to the Mayborn Convention Center for State Youth Achievement Day on August. Northbound I35 traffic needs to exit one exit sooner - 303A Industrial Drive. From here, you will exit around to a stop sign at Industrial Drive. Take a left turn on Industrial and go to the light and take another left on North 3rd. Follow this to Bellaire Drive and the Mayborn Center. Southbound on I35: Take exit 303 - Industrial Drive. After the un-
derpass, exit right and onto Industrial Drive. Stay on Industrial to the stop light at North 3rd where you will turn left. Follow this until Bellaire Dr. and the Mayborn Center on your right. The IH35 frontage road northbound is one way north of Bellaire. It is currently two-way south of Bellaire. There are blue and white signs posted along the route directing you to the Mayborn Center.
Construction in Corpus, Too Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky called last week. Brother Jerry says that Lodge 79 is getting ready to welcome members from across Texas to the 10th Annual SPJST Corpus Christi Get Away on August 12 to 14 at Emerald Beach. He asked to inform everyone that there is road construction in front of Emerald Beach Hotel and to plan ahead and allow a little extra time and care when traveling around the area. —SPJST— It’s always great to see family members! I enjoyed visiting with two very special and sweet ladies, Wilma Schiller, left, and Aunt Toni Malcik recently. Wilma and I are distant cousins, and Toni was my late uncle Edwin Schiller’s wife. Toni is a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone.

Member proud of youth; appreciates program
I want to say how incredibly proud I am of all the royalty participants who competed at District Two Youth Achievement Day. I cannot even begin to imagine how scary it must be at that age to run for king or queen. But I would like to take a minute for a proud mommy moment to say how much I am impressed with two royalty participants . . . and that would be my kids Hunter and Dannikka. I did not know anything about SPJST until I met their daddy, Brandon. I then learned all sorts of stuff! I have loved being a part of the amazing youth program and watching my kids grow. I love how they are encouraged to step up into leadership roles, make friends with kids all across the state of Texas, and learn so many ways to volunteer their time. I look forward to seeing them continue to grow into amazing people. Thank you, SPJST, for all you have to offer our youth! Fraternally, Amber Bartek Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—

Fraternalism
Continued from Page 1.
right reasoning: the good of our organization. And they will work together for that shared purpose. We need more of this fraternalism. We need to be strengthened by all members pulling together, working together, accomplishing together. A fraternal organization that has withstood the test of time speaks of “the cement of brotherly love and affection, that cement which unites us into one sacred band or society of brothers, among whom no contention should ever exist, but that noble emulation of who can best work or best agree.” We need only add “sisters” to that formula, and we could be talking about SPJST. Another fraternal organization is similar to us in that they sell insurance, and here’s what they have to say about themselves: “[We are] a tax—exempt fraternal benefit society. The membership organization sells life insurance, annuity and investment products not to benefit stockholders but to improve the quality of life of its stakeholders members, their families, and their communities. The organization accomplishes this through social, charitable, and volunteer activities. As a fraternal organization, the society is organized around a lodge system, called chapters. Chapters offer fellow-
ship and community service opportunities for members.” Doesn’t that sound familiar? If you didn’t know it was another organization, you might substitute an “SPJST” label on the description. SPJST started its operations in Texas on July 1, 1897, as the Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas) with 782 members and 25 lodges. SPJST is a society that members can join for any number of reasons. It’s a “package deal” built upon the idea of addressing human needs - financial, social, and cultural. The ability to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds our society together. The fraternal component of SPJST further enhances membership by emphasizing Czech heritage and the social and civic responsibilities that members share with each other and the communities in which they live. I sometimes consider myself a “Czech,” and the love of the members of SPJST has enriched my life beyond words. I know that our other non-Czech-born members feel the same way. So it is my prayer that the spirit of fraternalism will take stronger root, and that we will go forward with more candidates for office who all share our common purpose, and who work together, regardless of who “wins” because if we are undergirded by fraternalism, we all win! —SPJST—

The youth room is looking great. Thank you, F.L., Charles, and David. You are doing a great job. We really appreciate all you do. The Corpus Christi Get Away is almost here. Make your plans to attend. The trustees are looking for a cleaning crew for the hall more as they hire someone. We need someone to hire the bands. Could you do the job? Call the trustees; we could use the help. “Happy Birthday” was sung to me. Thank you — another year older.

On Wednesday, July 13, 2016, President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting of Lodge 29, Taylor to order. He led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence for the departed. Officer roll call showed Tammy Cannon and Wayne Voigt absent. The June minutes were read and approved. Ronnie gave the treasurer’s report. Vice President Sharon Kaderka reminded us of the Corpus Get Away in August. All state tournaments for 2017 will be held at the SPJST Home Office as attendance was up significantly for the 2016 competitions. Efforts are under way to solicit sponsors for the 2017 tournaments. If you know of a sponsor, please contact Frank Horak. District Two Youth Achievement Day (YAD) was held at Seaton Star Hall on July 9. SPJST member referrals are wanted, and a referral qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest. The SPJST Foundation is holding a “Clean Out Your Barn!” auction on September 17 at the ENC. Cristy Girod gave the youth leader report. There were 12 youth at the meeting. They discussed camp. There will be 15 youth, two LITs - Brandon Girod and Kara Kaderka, and Cristy
Girod and D. J. Jirasek as chaperones attending camp. At District Two YAD, Lodge 29 had nine winners in the various categories. Hailey Girod won two first places and will take those to State YAD in August. The youth club will hold a membership drive on Sunday, August 7 at 1 p.m. at Lodge 29. Jesse reported the person giving Lodge 29 a bid on the grill vent needs to talk to the fire marshall. It was decided that instead of donating the old Lodge 29 float to the Clean Out Your Barn auction, Lodge 29 would make a donation to the Foundation. Ronnie read a letter from District Two Director Jesse Pospisil thanking delegates for their work at the Convention. Ronnie welcomed special guests SPJST Vice President Hiram Dixon, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak, and SPJST Foundation Director of Development James Lee, III to our meeting. Each one addressed the group. James Lee informed us of the “Clean Out Your House” auction that he would like each district to hold next spring. Thanks to each of you for attending our meeting! Ronnie discussed the upcoming barbecue cookoff on September 23 and 24 and asked members to think about sponsors. The barbecue appreciation dinner will be in August. We would appreciate if members can bring desserts for the meal.

Etheredge gave a personal experience, and it was overwhelmingly insightful.
Independence Day Johnnie Haak then discussed all the upcoming events, and we talked about who was planning on attending. She also gave some food for thought about the July 4 Independence Day. Independence Day should have been July 2. July 2, 1776, is the day that the Continental Congress actually voted for independence. John Adams, in his writings, even noted that July 2 would be remembered in the annals of American history and would be marked with fireworks and celebrations. The written Declaration of Independence was dated July 4 but wasn’t actually signed until August 2. Fifty-six delegates eventually signed the document, although all were not present on that day in August.
District Two Fall Meeting— Sunday, August 28 Johnnie Haak also reminded all that the District Two Fall Meeting will be Sunday, August 28 at Lodge 80, Holland. Jennave Fuchs then entertained us all with a new type of bingo called Pokeno. It was loads of fun for all! Linda Johnson and Jennifer McCarthy reminded the lodge that two youth, Alexandria Johnson and Luke McCarthy, will be attending District Two Camp this summer from July 21 to 24. They both are so excited! Greg McCarthy announced that our lodge is now on Facebook for all to see. Yay! Hopefully, we will get many calls for hall rentals. Birthdays this month are for Deborah Rohlack and Jennifer McCarthy.

Učme se česky Let Us Study Czech Lekce Sedmá Lesson 7
Read the following out loud. Get your parents, grandparents, relatives, or friends to help you with the pronunciation. Clip and save each lesson and compile into a notebook. děkuji—thank you prosím—you are welcome (means “please”, but used instead of English “you are welcome”) rádo se stalo—I was glad to do it není zač—don’t mention it * * * * *
Ďekuji is singular. Sometimes it is as děkuju. Děkuji is more proper and is more often used. Plural is děkujeme. It is not necessary to add an equivalent of “you,” but it could be done, and it is often done. Then, it is děkuji ti when we are close to the person addressed, or děkuji Vám if the relation to the person addressed is more formal. * * * * *
The most common reply to the word děkuji is the word prosím. Rádo se stalo and neni zač is used similar to “I was glad to do it,” or “don’t mention it,” in America. * * * * *

Dovolte prosím—with your permission, (please), pardon me (please) odpusťte (prosím)—excuse me, (please) promiňte (prosím)—I am sorry, pardon me. nic se nestalo—it was nothing * * * * *
The word prosím is the most common courtesy word. The original is, “I beg you” and only from the context can you tell whether the word prosím means “I beg you”, or whether it serves as “please”.
Prosím, is shown above in parenthesis because its use is optional, making it more polite. * * * * *
The words odpusťte and promiňte mean practically the same. The informal address would be promiň and odpust to be used only with those persons with whom you are on a “thou” basis. The “thou” and “you” basis sounds archaic in English, but there is an important difference in the relation between persons whom we address “thou” — in Czech, ty — (the verb tykati

The English “I am sorry” in Czech means Je mi líto or Ja lituji.
The Czech phrase is used in the same sense as the original meaning of “I am sorry,” but generally, we can say that Je mi líto is used much more sparingly than “I am sorry.” The latter can often be translated odpusťte or promiňte. * * * * *
Jake se máte (máš)?/Jak se vám (ti) daří?—How are you? Děkuji, dobře—Fine, thank you. Nestojí to za nic—It’s not worth anything. špatně, mizerně—bad, miserable
Jake se máte (máš)? or Jak se vám (ti) daří? are not quite as common a greeting as in English. In Czech, you ask it when you want to know how your friend is dong not instead of “good morning”.
The answer to Jak se máš? In Czech, you may hear a little longer story than the stereotype “fine, thank you”. The European people do not share the American optimistic outlook and more often than not, you may hear an answer more in the form of a complaint. * * * * *

Just Call Me Czechia
‘Call Me Czechia’’: The Czech Republic Is Getting a New Name . . . The Czech country wants to solve confusion by—so it’s rebranding. Here’s something you may not know: Most countries have two official English-language names recognized by the United Nations - the clunky long-form title like ‘The French Republic,’ and the shorter, snappier name used day-to-day, like ‘France.’ But the Czech Republic, formed when Czechoslovakia split into two nations in 1993, has struggled to find an official nickname that is universally recognized. Sports teams and national beers have often displayed “Czech,” but grammarians will know that the word is an adjective, not a place, so it’s not technically correct. The government’s solution? Make a new name and do their darndest to have it catch on. Today, Czech authorities, including the president and prime minister, unveiled Czechia (pronounced CHEHkhiya) as the new, official short name for the Czech Republic, and they have wasted no time in campaigning for its widespread adoption. One website devoted to the “Czechia Initiative” includes information on the historical use of the name while another - in clear anticipation of any dissent - provides a list of myths and facts regarding the new name: No, the Czech-language short name Česko is not likely to be adopted by English speakers any time soon. No, they didn’t just make up the name out of thin air - its first appearance in the English language dates back to 1841. Yes, there are other countries that use their long state name - like the Central African Republic and the Dominican
VĚSTNÍK
Republic - but they don’t want to be one of them. While the name change needs to be approved first by parliament, and then officially lodged with the United Nations, most leaders think it will stick. But not everyone’s happy about it: “I disagree with the name ‘Czechia,’” the minister of regional policy Karla Slechtova tweeted recently. “I don’t want people to confuse our country with Chechnya.” The decision is simply to re-brand, and changes nothing for travelers to the country, but authorities hope it will solve confusion over the name of the country, often referred to variously as Czech Republic, CR, Czech, Bohemia, and more. “It is not good if a country does not have clearly defined symbols or if it even does not clearly say what its name is,” Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek said, according to the Czech News Agency. So on your next visit, as you explore the country’s deep-rooted beer tradition or public art scene, just make sure you Czechia yourself before you go! —By Sebastian Modak Conde Nast April 15, 2016
Opinion: Reference text above about Czech Nation name change from one interested reviewer, a CzechAmerican of Czech ancestry. What an unusual text to send out. Having just returned from the well-recognized country of Czech Republic, people there found it a preposterous subject as similar among politicians in other countries around the world today, they said. We were assured Czech people in the Czech Republik would never buy it! “It is only means of some politician making a statement for which to get known.” In airline negotiation in airports in Houston, France, and Austria, they still know “Czech.” Incidentally, yes, France is the given as in Czech. It is not a matter of grammar; it is a point of identity. It has worked for France for centuries as well. Who are the confused? The UN is not confused. It is documented in history the Czechs were the first signatories in Europe. —Effie M. Rosene Lodge 232 Houston Midtown —SPJST—
Czech Weddings of Yesteryear By Carolyn Heinsohn©
The weddings for couples today have drastically changed from those of our ancestors, and with each generation, the traditions of the past are increasingly forgotten or eliminated Very few contemporary bridal couples incorporate the wedding traditions of days gone by into their ceremonies or celebrations because of modern conveniences, technology, marketing, the media, and most of all, the blending of ethnicities which dilutes traditions. The wedding march is the only “constant” that still seems to prevail if one or both of the bridal couple has Czech ancestry. Weddings for Texas Czechs in the 19th and early 20th centuries were generally held in late October or November when harvesting was done, and the weather was still fairly decent. Usually they were held on a Monday or Tuesday. Wednesdays were acceptable only if the other two days were already taken by someone else in the community. No invitations were sent out; instead, two or three groomsmen did the inviting in person. They rode by horseback from house to house, firing a pistol to announce their arrival. After being invited into the house, one of the groomsmen made a speech inviting the family to the wedding. They were then often treated to a drink of schnapps, homemade wine, or beer before leaving. Sometimes, it took them several days to get around to all of the invited guests, who lived miles apart. Of course, the extra added time that it took to visit and share libations affected their endeavors. No matter the size of the wedding, it was always held at the home of the bride’s parents. Lumber was borrowed from a lumberyard in a nearby town to build a dance platform with benches all around the perimeter. Since meals were usually served outside, tables had to be built, as well as framework for canvas tarps to provide shade or protection from rain and unexpected cold weather. After the wedding, everything had to be dismantled and hauled back to town. Lumberyards apparently had a used lumber section for wedding purposes. Noodles were made a few weeks ahead of time for chicken noodle soup. A calf for beef stew meal and a hog for
sausage would be butchered. Fryers for fried chicken were killed and cleaned the day before the wedding, since there was no refrigeration. Also kolaches, apple strudels, a wedding cake, and other food had to be prepared the day before so a large number of helpers were required. On the day of the wedding before leaving to get married, the bride would kneel before her parents thanking them for the care and love given to her. The parents would then give their final blessing, making the sign of the cross over her head. The wedding service generally took place at 8 a.m. at the local church if the couple had a church wedding. All of the guests would then travel back to the bride’s home for the allday celebration, which began with a wedding breakfast of kolaches, strudel, bacon, and eggs. The bridesmaids pinned sprigs of cedar tied with colored ribbon onto each guests’ clothing. In the Old Country, rosemary, which is the symbol of fertility and good luck, was used. However, rosemary was not readily available here, so cedar was substituted. A band played from noon until the wee hours of the next morning. The musicians were treated to as much food and drink as they wanted so one can imagine the musical acumen after long hours of playing. Of course, no one really cared because everyone was having a wonderful time. Very late at night, the unveiling ceremony took place. The bridal couple would generally sit on chairs in the middle of the dance floor, where the bride’s veil was removed by her parents and replaced with a bonnet. Sometimes she was also given a doll to hold and an apron to wear. An old hat was placed on the groom’s head, and sometimes he was given a pipe to hold. The saga of how the bride and groom had to now leave their parents and be ready for the duties of a wife and mother and husband and father were expressed in a traditional song sung in Czech by the wedding guests. In the early days, a farmer’s son was usually expected to continue farming. The couple had to begin looking for a rent house months before their wedding. If a farmer had done well, he might have been able to purchase land for his sons, if he had any. That land was given to the couple when they married; however, this was not very common. The boy usually received a pair of horses and a plow

from home for his start. The girl received the most essential furniture - a bed, a dresser, a wardrobe or armoire, a kitchen table with chairs, a kitchen safe, and a cook stove, if she was one of the fortunate ones. From then on, they were on their own. Occasionally, the families would give the couple a cow and a few hens. If the girl had saved money from chopping or picking cotton for others, she might have enough to buy a rocker, a sewing machine, or a trunk for her new home. There were no bridal showers or honeymoons, and the gifts from guests were small. The bridal couples of yesteryear could not have ever imagined the expenses incurred for many present-day weddings, gifts, and honeymoons. How things have changed through the years - all except the basic vows!

Groom’s test There was a chopping block and axe and bottle of wine prepared for the groom at the threshold of the bride’s house. If he took the axe, it was a good sign - he would be a good houseman. If he decided for a bottle of wine, he would be a drunkard.

Bride’s test As she entered the groom’s house for the first time, there was a broom ready in the room and she had to sweep the room briskly and put it back to its place. She showed that she wanted to be a good housewife.
Protective magic Friends throw nuts, grain, coins, or figs outside the newly weds’ house. It is not connected with children this time, but it is a sacrifice for the gods of the house and home. The sacrifice should reconcile the gods with the newcomers - with a new family.
Throwing flowers Nieces of the bride and groom or daughters of their friends lead the wedding parade to the church, and they scatter flowers before them. This is a pagan tradition, too. Flowers attract the goddess of fertility.
Wedding guard of honor Friends form an aisle for the newly weds to walk through. They try to make it difficult. Symbolic meaning: overcoming difficulties in marriage.

Pulling After a wedding ceremony, the groom’s friends pull a rope outside a church. The rope is decorated with flowers, ribbons, and also with empty bottles, and they allow them to continue their journey if they are paid off by the groom. The groom has to pay off the sins of his youth.
Kidnapping of the bride This symbolizes the bride’s separation from her parents and the beginning of a new partnership. Later, when the reception is almost over, friends kidnap the bride. If the groom does not find her, he has to pay a ransom. Note: Time limit should be set so wedding guests do not wait hours for the bride’s return.
Circular dance The bride dances with closed eyes, and single girls try to get a bit of her veil (it is better to use a cheap veil for this occasion). Men form a protective circle around the bride to prevent the girls from getting to her. If the circle is broken through, it symbolizes the farewell to innocence.
Inviting kolache Traditionally, these small buns are baked few weeks before the wedding. They are given to relatives, friends, and neighbors as an invitation to the wedding reception. Kolaches should have at least three fillings and are considered to show the culinary art of the housewife.
Threshold Why does the groom carry the bride over the threshold of their new home? It is said that he wants to outwit evil spirits who lurk under the threshold and take care of the house. Other meaning: symbolic beginning of a new life.
Bridesmaids Bridesmaids are single girls who accompany the bride to church. This has a specific meaning: evil spirits who wanted to harm the bride would mistake her for the bridesmaid - this is why bridesmaids should have dresses similar with the bride’s dress.
Longevity The friends of a bride might plant a tree in her yard, then decorate it with colored ribbons and painted eggshells. Legend believed the bride would live as long as the tree.
Crown The night before her wedding day, her friends would also give her a crown of rosemary to represent wisdom, love, loyalty, and remembrance that she would wear on her wedding day. Today, wreaths of baby’s breath and tiny roses are seen on the bride as well as her bridesmaids, a variation of the rosemary wreath. Before the marriage vows take place, an infant is laid on the couple’s bed, to bless and enhance their fertility. Exiting shower At Czech weddings, wedding guests often throw peas, rather than rice, at the departing wedded couple.
Virtues The bride-to-be is also given three covered dishes containing wheat for fertility, millet mixed with ashes that

unity, and then finish a bowl of soup using one spoon to symbolize the melting of two souls into one and the trust that each will carry for reliance on the other in time of need.
she must sift through to prove her patience, and the third hides a sparrow under the lid.
Union At the Czech wedding reception, a plate is broken at the feet of the bride and groom, and they must clean the pieces up together to promote the ability to work together in a healthy manner throughout their marriage.
Trust At the wedding reception, the bride and groom are joined by being covered in a large towel symbolizing

Kolibka Kolibka is among the many special dances performed at the wedding celebration. In this dance, the chief bridesmaid holds a plate in her arms as if it were a baby. Guests throw coins onto the plate to start a nest egg for the couple’s future offspring.
