New Zealand folk musician seeks to perform in SPJST lodges
Hello. I am Emily Fairlight, a folk musician based in the port town of Lyttel-
ton, New Zealand. I supported The Bristol Dollar on their tour of Texas in March of this year, and I fell in love with the people and places of Texas, and I am now returning for a solo tour. I will be in Texas from Thursday, October 6 to Monday, October 24, and I am looking to perform and lock in some gigs while I am there. I contacted the Texas Governor’s Office of Music, and they gave me your contact details. I would love to play at some SPJST halls while I am in Texas. Can you let me know if you have space one evening during the time I am there? If you don’t, you may know of other suitable venues. You can check out my music and videos at my website www.emilyfairlight.com. Reviews of my music have compared me to Patti Smith, Natalie Merchant, and Laura Marling. I am releasing a new collection of music immediately prior to my visit as well. I am represented by Headland Music (www.headlandmusic.com) so please feel free to contact them with any questions. Otherwise just sing out if you have any questions or suggestions. Thank you, Emily Fairlight E: emily@emilyfairlight.com W: www.emilyfairlight.com
Emily Fairlight Bio Emily Fairlight is a natural born folk singer. She writes lyrics straight from her heart to yours. Her poetic background is obvious in the feel and composition of her songs. Emily currently lives in the industrial port town of Lyttelton, New Zealand, which is known for being a magnet for folk singers and songwriters and Emily is part of the established music community. She has been performing and composing for over a decade, and during this time has played throughout New Zealand and performed as opening act for The Bristol Dollar on their March 2016 tour of Texas. She plays guitar, piano accordion, and kick drum and has performed at times with a supporting band. She describes her own music style as introspective alternative folk. —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, July 14, 2016, in the Sokol Club room. Everything was different this day. Some of us met at 9 a.m. to arrange tables for our white elephant sale and show-and-tell. Others came around 10 a.m. and displayed their sale items. We had many, many nice things, and everyone was looking and picking out items they wanted. I don’t remember what time President Irene started the sale with her gavel. As usual, I bought too many things. What was left over, President Irene said everything was half price. I think most everything was sold. Thank you, members, for bringing your items and for purchasing what everyone else brought. I can’t remember how much we made, but I think it was close to $100. Around 11:20 a.m., Dorothy Kudrna and I left to pick up the pizza. While we were gone, they started our show-and-tell. Thank you, Libbie, for taking notes on what everyone was showing and talking about. Show-and-Tell Dorothy Prachyl showed a beauti-
ful, small, blue vase that was more than 100 years old that belonged to her mother. Karen Haskovec showed a 50-year muslin baby wrap from Napal. Geraldine Valek showed an antique curling iron that she used at home when she was young. Libbie said she remembers we used one also. Libbie showed a really unusual cloth microwave handmade holder made by her friend Camilla Bolce. You put your oatmeal in the bowl, into the holder in the microwave, and when ready, it won’t be too hot to take out. I have never seen anything like this. Her friend also gave us one for our raffle. She also had two pictures that were ribbon embroidered by Camilla who will be 100 years young in December. (We need to remember and send her a birthday card.) She also had a handmade wicker basket with handle made by Joyce Ehrenberger at the retirement home she is at in North Carolina. Irene Prachyl had a beautiful rosary from Australia given to her by her daughter Cheryl Blumberg; and two bowls from Thailand with elephants all around the bowl. Elephants are sacred there. Dorothy Kudrna showed a wall hanging she made from her mother and sister’s crocheted scarves and quilt

top made from their embroidered scarves. I wish all could see them; they are beautiful. Ann Clagett showed a rhythm band vest she wore in grade school at St. John’s when she was in the band many years ago. Thank you to all who brought items; they were all enjoyed. President Irene said grace, and we enjoyed pizza, cookies, and cake. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance then held a moment of silence for Steve Slovak, Henrietta Steele, Holly Friday, Helene Valek, and William Marusak. Ann Clagett read the minutes of the last meeting. Dolores Vrana gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Dorothy Prachyl read two funnies as Ginny was absent. Kay Lynn Kovar also read a poem, “Grandma’s Quilt,” which was really pretty. Sunshine Lady Dorothy announced birthday celebrants - Dorothy Valek, Dorothy Bobalek, Victoria Vlk, Joan Strunc, and Barbara Phipps. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Barbara. We hope all the others had a great day. Dorothy had thinking of you cards to sign for Victoria, who had knee surgery, and for Dorothy Valek and Willie Matous. We hope all are doing well and hope to see you in August. Quilt scheduler Pat Fowler said there are no changes in the schedule. In August, we will quilt the Christmas quilt so quilters, please come. President Irene announced that Kay Lynn Kovar has volunteered to purchase and get ready all the Christmas sacks for our seven shut-in members. Thank you for that. We were happy to see Ella Mae and Jerry Zmolek. Jerry told us about his heart surgery and that he feels so much better now. We are glad to hear it. We had 16 members and guest Jerry Zmolek present. Georgia Holy was the 50-50 dollar winner. Lucky you! We had so many lovely items for the raffle; so many that I couldn’t keep up with who won what. I think almost everyone won something, and some won two or three times. I want to send a big special thank you to Libbie’s friend from Fort Worth for donating many items for the elephant sale and raffle. Sorry, I didn’t get your name and address, but we certainly appreciate all the items. Thank you so much.

Family cites ‘great attitude’ as veteran celebrates 106th birthday
By Ursula Pari - Anchor Original Story Aired on KSAT July 18, 2016
Editor’s Note: Congratulations to SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton member Charlie Kunetka who celebrated his 106th birthday on July 17, 2016. Brother Charlie has been an SPJST member since 1938. Charlie’s grandfather Ondrej Kunetka was a charter member of Lodge 1, Fayetteville, and Charlie’s great-nephew Bradley Stavinoha serves as District Five Director. Brother Charlie is pictured with his niece Joan Wendt.
A United States Air Corps veteran is enjoying his 106th birthday celebration a lot like someone half his age would. He had a quick workout and a surprise birthday party at his gym at the Baptist Healthlink Fitness and Wellness Center. Charlie Joseph Kunetka is still active and enjoys a wit and memory that few his age could boast of. Throughout the party, his contemporaries continued to offer compliments like, “You look absolutely fantastic. What’s your secret?” Each time, he said he wasn’t sure, but after a conversation with KSAT’s Ursula Pari, he did share a few clues. Ursula asked him, “Do you think you drank a lot?” He answered, “No.” She also asked him, “Did you smoke a lot?” He answered, “No”. But Kunetka also added, while laughing, “I drank a lot of water.” The son of Czechoslovakian immigrants who was born in 1910 outlived both parents at a very young age. He was raised by an aunt in Jourdanton and eventually working at Kelly Air Force Base running the PX exchange. He said
During the meeting, it was suggested that we start thinking about having a quilt show of our own to celebrate our 60th anniversary. We had one 10 years ago, celebrating our 50th. I remember it was really nice. Half the Sokol hall was full of beautiful quilts. Kay Lynn made a motion to adjourn the meeting, and it was seconded by Dorothy Prachyl.
Other News Irene has been enjoying her daughter Cheryl Blumberg and two grandchildren visiting from Thailand. She said she did a lot of cooking, but she enjoyed every minute of it. She will be lonesome now. The Sokol instructors’ training course has been going on. They have 42 kids - 10 from New York, eight
most of his relatives are gone now, with one uncle also celebrating his 100th birthday. His daughters said Charlie’s longevity is due to a great attitude and hard work on his fitness and his brain function. His youngest daughter, Sue Hansmeyer, said, “He works at keeping his mind sharp because he’ll memorize all the presidents of the United States in order. I’ll catch him sometimes looking like he’s mumbling, but he’s just repeating their names.” It must work because a conversation with the WWII veteran also reveals a great memory of names and places from a long-ago childhood in the 1910s and 20s. “I can still name the families who had children who went to that school and I can still name that teacher in 1924,” Kunetka said. Another factor in his agility and ability at 106 is the fact that Charlie has never stopped traveling. In the last 10 years, he’s been to the Czech Republic, Hawaii, Germany, Alaska, the East Coast and West Coast. In fact, he said he doesn’t think there’s a state in the U.S. he has not visited. The staff at the Baptist HealthLink Fitness and Wellness Center not only threw him a 106th surprise birthday party, they also gave him a gift of a Southwest Airlines gift card so he can continue his travels. While that may have come in handy for this busy man, when asked what he wanted, Charlie said simply, “Another year.”

from Cleveland, Chicago, Cedar Rapids, Dallas, Fort Worth, and of course, Ennis. They are doing great, learning a lot, and I’m sure, having fun. We have to thank all the people who have volunteered - especially Chuck and Janet Kohut, Darron and Debbie Slovak, and Liz Krajca. There were many others; also several of our sewing circle members who took laundry to wash. This all ends Saturday, July 23. They have a graduation ceremony and dinner, and hopefully, lots of good memories to take home. Everyone, remember, the next meeting will be Thursday, August 11. We will quilt, enjoy lunch, and have the meeting and 50-50 dollar game. I hope to see you all. Stay cool! Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
The heat in North Texas is unbearable! Period! I don’t know if everyone is sick of staying in or if all needed a break from the summertime doldrums. Our members and guests surprised us when they were out in full force on July 12, 2016 . . . 58 of them in all. As always, there was a lot of hugging, catching up, eating, and enjoying each other’s company. President Cathy began the meeting by leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, welcoming guests, and asking them to let us know a little bit about themselves. There was Willie Mae Becan’s children Madeliene Myers, and sons Bernard and Jerry Becan. Willie Mae can no longer come; however, her children got together this day and visited with us. They were then going to see her where she is now living. Evelyn Scaff was with us after what seemed to us a long absence. Her son Bruce brought her and stayed for the meeting. Our summertime “student” Aleesha Barrett came with her grandmother Lorinda Manasco, and Ray Terrell and Jerry Baker were guests of Sandi Celusniak. They seemed to be party people (smile) and added to our laughter. Vice President Janet Basham read a sweet prayer that can be found on the wall of Mother Teresa’s Orphanage, and business continued with the approval of the minutes and financial report. Sunshine Chair Marlene Bass reported that a sympathy card went to Janice Record on the loss in her family, and get well cards went to Caroline O’Brien and Theresa Clay. Both Caroline and Theresa were well enough to come to the meeting, and it was good they’re on the road to recovery. We were sorry to hear that Estelle Hurtik fell and broke her hip and is now at staying with her daughter. Hopefully, Estelle will be able to return to us soon as well.
Business Announcements, Reminders, Etc. 1. Keep bringing your favorite recipes for Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth booklets. President Cathy would like to have them as soon as possible. 2. The theme for August will be
“Back-to-School.” We decided, after a suggestion, that we would have a spelling bee, then that was changed to a test. All should be prepared with a pen or pencil to participate. Oh, there was so much moaning and groaning, but it will be fun! I can’t wait to see who is the best speller among us. 3. Along with going back-toschool, we will be collecting school supplies in August and September. We want to do our part with the education of our young ones and assist the teachers however we can. Please help us get a truckload full of goodies for the teachers and kiddos.
You know that lunch was delicious because Mary Ann Krivanek, Carolyn Irby, Jeanette Tesar, Joyce Tesar, and Karen Smith were in the kitchen. Thank you, ladies, for the wonderful meal. I ate way too much and was totally uncomfortable for the rest of the day. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Margaret Laymance, Cathy Simmank, Sandi Celusniak, Jeanette Tesar, and to the men playing dominoes, Stanley Krenek and Roy Thieme. We also send birthday wishes to Theretta Praslicka and Debbie Akins who could not be with us. Hope your day was the best. Jon Durham updated the group on the progress of renovations and updating the lodge building. It is exciting to see the improvements and plans to keep the lodge active for years to come. He also announced that Czech Heritage Day will be Saturday, September 17. The Ladies Circle will once again hold a cake walk to add to the festivities. In closing, door prizes were awarded, and Vice President Janet told some one-liners sent to her by her brother in Arizona. Our meeting ended on a high note and laughter. The blessing for lunch was said, and after lunch, we held a silent auction. The day closed by playing bingo. Thanks to all who attended. It was a record day for attendance, and it was a great day. Watch out for the heat and see you next month. Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

In Memory of Darrell Trayler
On the morning of Sunday, May 29, 2016, surrounded and comforted by his family, the Lord called upon Darrell Trayler to come home, making his transition from earth to Heaven peaceful after a short illness. He was born on June 18, 1953, to Glen and Marian Hejl Trayler in Taylor, Texas. He was raised in Corpus Christi and graduated from Mary Carroll High School in 1971. After graduating and trying out different jobs, he landed a job with Del Mar Distributing
until his retirement. Darrell was a unique, special kind of gentleman; everything he did was routine and timed. When he wasn’t watching Darrell Trayler sports, which was his favorite thing to do, he was visiting or eating out with his friends on certain days. The one thing he loved the most besides his parents was watching sports. He had a love for sports, especially for his favorite baseball team,

which was the St. Louis Cardinals, and his favorite football team, which was the Dallas Cowboys. He was preceded in death by his parents Glen and Marian H. Trayler. He is survived by brother Dale Trayler (Dalia); nephew Tavis Trayler (Holly); and niece Tiffany Trayler; and great-nephews and great-nieces Aden Lopez, Cason Trayler, and Natalie McCool, and Madison Trayler. Visitation was at 1 p.m. on Wednesday June 1 at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors Chapel. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1 at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors Chapel. Resolution of Sympathy
We, the members of Lodge 66, Waco, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, RAYMOND RAY SHELTON. Raymond Ray Shelton, Sr., age 84, of Bellmead, Texas, was called into eternal joy on Wednesday evening, July 20, 2016, from the farm he loved to work. Family visitation was held Sunday, July 24 from 5 to 7 pm, with funeral service at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead at 10 am on Monday, Raymond Shelton July 25. Raymond was born to Robert Roy and Antonette Shelton on April 25, 1932, in Houston. Raymond married Helen Laverne Krezer on July 12, 1949, spending 58 wonderful years together until her passing in 2007. They came to the Waco/Bellmead area in 1954, where they became charter members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead. Raymond and Helen proudly raised five children in the Lutheran faith, demonstrating their love of Christ, love for each other, and the love of their family and extended family.
Raymond was a member of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco. Raymond served as a Boy Scout leader for many years, achieving membership in the coveted Order of the Arrow and receiving the distinguished Silver Beaver award. Raymond was a working man who learned the plumbing trade from Mr. R.P. Williams. Companies he served included Thompson and Jumper Plumbing, Hill Plumbing, and Lochridge-Priest Plumbing. Raymond was the owner of Shelton Plumbing, Inc. in Waco, retiring in April 1997. Raymond was a collector of many things: tractors, tractor parts, vintage cars, and more. He loved to tinker in his shop and became quite a woodworker, building and installing many cabinets in his home with Helen and at church. Raymond never met a stranger. His kindness could only be sometimes overshadowed by his sense of humor, another endearing quality. He traveled with Helen and family in a motor home to bluegrass music festivals, camping grounds, fishing trips, and family reunions. Raymond proudly earned the name “Cinnamon Roll Man” by helping Helen in the kitchen and distributing delicious cinnamon rolls. Raymond was “Daddy” or “Pop” to his children and friends of his children. He was also known as “PawPaw” or “Pee-Paw” to grandchildren and great-grandchildren alike, always ready to tease and tickle without mercy. Birthday parties and holiday celebrations were always a little more lively with Pop! Along with Helen, Raymond was also preceded in death by brothers Franklin and Lee Roy Shelton; sister Robbie Lee Wolf; daughters-in-law Joyce Shelton and Teresa Shelton; and great-granddaughter Megan Kay Michulka. Raymond is survived by brother Willie Shelton and wife Frances of Lexington; and sister Louise Niemtschk of Channelview. Raymond leaves his children to cherish memories and continue in the “Shelton Way” - sons Raymond Shelton, Jr. and wife Margie of China Spring, Rodney Shelton and wife Judy of Bellmead, Ricky Shelton and wife Fran of Crawford; daughters Helen “Kay” Owen and husband Gene of Waco, and Karen Shelton of Bellmead; and cherishing Raymond’s tickles are grandchildren and great-grandchildren Michelle,
Brian, Hunter, and Hailey Strickland; Chris and Dani Owen; Kevin and Cindy Owen; Jennifer and Keith Price; Jeremy Worley; Melissa, Randy and Gavin Michulka; Heather and David Faulk; Lauren Shelton and fiancée Colby Elkins; Brandon Shelton; Brianna, Kyle and Brooklyn Huntstiger; and Nicholas Shelton and fiancée Taylor Hodge; many nieces, nephews, and friends; ‘adopted’ daughters Alison Dillon and Brenda Scott and son Arnold Blair; and very special friend Barbara Stone. Pallbearers for Raymond included Brian Strickland, Hunter Strickland, Kevin Owen, Jeremy Worley, Keith Price, Randy Michulka, David Faulk, Colby Elkins, Brandon Shelton, Nicholas Shelton, and Kyle Huntstiger. Honorary pallbearers were Chris Owen, Gavin Michulka, Arnold Blair, and Bobby Meyer. The family requests memorials be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead, Texas. May our departed brother rest in peace. Resolution Committee Diana Engelke Dorothy Veselka —SPJST—

State Youth Director shares August updates
It is amazing how fast July 2016 has come and gone! We will be celebrating the achievements of our SPJST youth at State Youth Achievement Day and will be crowning our 53rd State Royalty Court. I am very proud of the number of youth that participate in our youth program. SPJST youth camps have come to an end. I have had a great time with all the youth, District Youth Counselors, their assistants, youth leaders, and chaperones. SPJST members are like family to me, and I feel so blessed to have been given the time to enjoy fun times and getting to know everyone even more this summer. I have seen so many great crafts and have really enjoyed watching everyone create more treasured memories with SPJST - not to mention - lots of great laughs. Besides the usual activities at camp such as high ropes, archery, and swimming each district provided their youth with other unique activities such as dance lessons, haunted hay rides, improv, peddle cars, SPJST football, and water slides. The horses seemed to be enjoyed by most everyone as well this year. I really enjoyed watching the youngest of the groups learn to dance and the oldest let loose and just be silly. This is what makes my job a lot of fun — having the opportunity to see how creative our District Youth Counselors and Assistant District Youth Counselors are! I applaud each of you for the time and devotion you give our youth and youth program.
End-of-Summer Get Away! Good times await you at the Corpus Christi End-of-Summer Get Away on August 12 to 14 for a fun-filled weekend. We will again be staying at Emerald Beach Inn which is located right on the beach. There will be a lot of activities for the whole family.
Grandparents Day is September 11 Grandparents Day is Sunday, September 11. Remember all the wonderful grandparents who have been so special in your lives. It’s also a day for families. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day. It can be a time to discover one’s roots and even a time to learn patience, understanding and appreciation for the elderly - the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations.
Westfest This year, Westfest parade and festivities will be on Saturday, September 3 at the fairgrounds in West. This is also when the 2016-2017 State Royalty Court makes their first public appearance. Watch the Vestnik for more details.
District Youth Counselor Fall Meeting The 2016 Fall District Youth Counselor (DYC) Meeting will be September 23 to 25 in Dallas/Fort Worth. During the meeting, DYCs talk about guidelines for 2017 YAD Constructed Items (Wood), Foods (Pies), and Photography (Vehicles). We also discuss camp, next year’s theme, as well as any additions to the youth club rule book that may help things run a little
smoother. Next year’s theme is determined by District Five leadership. Youth Leaders, if you have any items you would like your DYC to discuss at our meeting, please submit your request in writing to your DYC. This way your voices can be heard and addressed. "Czech Heritage Month." October is "Czech Heritage Month." Good times await those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 16. That's Heritage Day and once again, SPJST lodges in the Dallas - Fort Worth area will be represented by their members at the celebration which takes place just inside the entrance to the fair park. The SPJST Home Office will also help again with this year's Heritage Day and we invite you to come out for a good time. Fraternally yours, Lynette Talasek State Youth Director —SPJST—

Dear Readers, The July meeting included finishing up our Join Hands Day project. Youth and their parents got together to paint the fire lane signage as well as painting the utility building behind the hall. After all the hard work, everyone ate pizza and then cooled off
at Betty’s house in the pool. Five of our youth attended camp this year Pierce, April, Austen, Preston, and Madison along with Jennifer, camp nurse. I wasn’t able to make it, but I heard all about it from the kids, and I can’t wait to see the pictures.

To je naše škola. A toto je naše třída. Tam je učitel. Zde jsou studenti. Jan je student. On má pero a knihu. Co je na stole? To je moje tužka. Voda ho vzala. “Kde je ta voda?” Voli ji vypili. “Kde jsou ti voli? agree in gender form with the noun that it modifies. Example: malý stůl - small table; malá kniha small book; malé okno - small window. In the vocabulary, there are adjectives given showing the three gender endings ý, á, and é.
2. In the reading exercise, the feminine nouns křída, pohádka, and kniha are spelled with the ending u. This is because in Czech when a noun is used in some function other than the subject or predicate nominative, it must be put into a case. The aforementioned feminine nouns are in the accusative case functioning as direct objects answering the question “what?”. Interstate 35 construction is causing a bit of confusion on how to get to the Mayborn Convention Center. Northbound I-35 traffic needs to exit one exit sooner - 303A Industrial Dr. From there, you will exit around to a stop sign at Industrial Dr. Take a left turn on Industrial and go to the light and take another left on North 3rd. Follow this to Bellaire Dr. and the Mayborn Center. Southbound I-35 traffic take exit 303 - Industrial Dr. At the four-way stop sign, turn left. Take this to the 3rd crossover/left turn. You will then take an immediate left heading north on 3rd. Follow this until Bellaire Dr., and the Mayborn Center is on your right. The IH35 frontage road northbound is one way north of Bellaire. It is currently twoway south of Bellaire but not sure how much longer. There are blue and white signs posted along the route directing you to the Mayborn Center.
