chools and colleges are back in session, and it’s time for us to start sending out applications for 2017 SPJST Scholarships and Leadership Grants. Do you know an SPJST member who will be graduating high school in 2017? If so, please encourage him/her to apply for an SPJST Scholarship and/or Leadership Grant. In 2016, SPJST awarded:

• 7 Leadership Grants for $7,000 • 3 Technical Scholarships for $3,000 • 45 General Scholarships for $45,000 • 6 District Merit Awards for $6,000 • 1 State Merit Award for $1,500 • 2 State Royalty Awards for $3,000

That is 64 scholarships, totalling $65,500. What a difference an SPJST scholarship can make to a young person entering college. Please help us spread the word and encourage college-bound SPJST members to apply. See page 5 for more information.

Still to Come . . . Next week’s Vestnik will include pictures from Lodge 29, Taylor’s appreciation dinner; Lodge 38, Kovar member activities; and Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club charity collections. We will also include obituaries. Stay tuned . . .

No September 21 Vestnik We will not publish an issue on September 21. We publish 50 issues per year, and this is one of our nonprinting weeks. Please plan accordingly. Thank you for your attention.

The Best Joke Ever This goes out to Leonard K. of Lodge 29, Taylor who always has a joke for me! A teenage boy is getting ready to take his girlfriend to the prom. First he goes to rent a tux, but there’s a long tux line at the shop, and it takes forever. Next, he has to get some flowers, so he heads over to the florist, and there’s a huge flower line there. He waits forever but eventually gets the flowers. Then he heads out to rent a limo. Unfortunately, there’s a large limo line at the rental office, but he’s patient and gets the job done. Finally, the day of the prom comes. The two are dancing happily, and his girlfriend is having a great time. When the song is over, she asks him to get her some punch, so he heads over to the punch table, and there’s no punchline. : ) New Vestnik Email Address Please make a note of this new email address —vestnik@spjst.org for contacting me or to submit items to the Vestnik, and please update your address books. Attention, Lodge 84, Dallas Members

Dear Members of Lodge 84, Dallas, If you have been following our lodge correspondence in the Vestnik in recent months, you’ll know that for some time, the members of Lodge 84, Dallas have been discussing matters related to the future of the lodge building and its adjacent parking lots. Generally stated, we have been looking at ways to make improvements and/or capitalize on the significant equity that exists in these properties. As a result of these discussions and a subsequent real estate listing, the lodge has received a purchase offer for its property. Correspondingly, and in accordance with Supreme Lodge operational procedures, a meeting will be held to discuss, consider, and vote on the proposed sale. This will be the key agenda item at the September meeting of Lodge

84, Dallas to be held on Sunday, September 18 at 2 p.m. at the lodge hall located at 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas. All adult members are encouraged to attend to weigh in on the discussion. In the event that members vote to sell, this will also be an opportune time to discuss ideas for the future home of Lodge 84, Dallas. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you are invited to share your thoughts with us through email at dyeags@swbell.net; however, please note, in order to vote on the proposed transaction, it will be necessary for you to be in attendance at the meeting on September 18. Thank you for your attention. Fraternally, Justine Yeager, President —SPJST—

Dear SPJST, I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to you for making the SPJST scholarship possible. After graduating from WCJC, I plan to attend UTMB Galveston, where I plan to become a doctor of physical therapy. By awarding me this scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden, which allows me to focus on the most important aspect of school learning. Your generosity has allowed me to be one step closer to my goal. Sincerely, Madeline Gadway Lodge 81, Needville —SPJST—

Grandparents Day - September 11 Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. This is a day to remember those who are special in our daily lives. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this wonderful day of celebration. In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for grandparents. Through concerted efforts on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign expanded statewide. Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) was especially instrumental in the project. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Also in 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the United States Senate. The resolution languished in committee. Mrs. McQuade and her team turned to the media to garner support. They also began contacting governors, senators, and congressmen in every state. They sent letters to churches, businesses, and numerous national organizations interested in senior citizens. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress

passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. Today, this event is observed by millions throughout the United States.

Lodge 84, Dallas seeks Beseda dancers for State Fair; “let’s do it for Mama Bessie”

Dear Readers A beseda memorial performance for Bessie Petr will be at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 16, 2016. As the State Fair approaches, it is also time to think of Beseda and Beseda practices. In honor of the late longtime Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Leader Bessie Petr, we are trying to get in touch with everyone who Bessie had taught the Beseda, to perform one more time at the Fair. Bessie served as youth leader for 64 years and taught the traditional Beseda to generation among generations of children, teens, adults, and the elderly. Please consider dancing at this year’s Fair on Sunday, October 16 for “Mama Bessie.” We can always bring back the memories of our practices, acting silly, goofy, acting as if we don’t know it to get out of dancing, or, of course, the serious practice! It will be a lot of fun to get back together with each other just one more time and know that Bessie would be smiling at us as we dance. It was always her pride and joy to see how many circles she could get to dance at the Fair. You can contact me (Lynda Novak) at 972-948-4456 or Larry Petr II (P2) at 469-279-7387 or contact us on Facebook. Let’s just do it for Mama Bessie! Fraternally yours, Lynda Novak —SPJST—

Lodge 191, Lufkin hosts dance this Friday

September is here, and hopefully, cooler weather will follow. Now when it gets cold, everyone will be wanting warmer weather. I guess it is a good thing we live in a climate where the weather changes all of the time, or no one would have anything to complain about! There was a good crowd at the August dance. The band was Trick Shot with Linda Kaye. The 50-50 was won by Linda Kaye, which was $110. The two free dance tickets to any dance but New Year’s were won by Linda Kaye and Roy Luce, which were accepted by Gloria Edwards. Roy had to leave the dance a little early. The lodge was decorated by Diane McDowell and Ruth Welch. Please remember to thank the people that do the decorating and host the dances. If you would like to host and/or decorate the lodge for a dance, please call Kathy Riley at 936-634-1635. You might have a good time doing it. The next lodge meeting will be September 12 at 7 p.m. It only lasts about an hour, and the decisions about running the lodge are made at these meetings. Lodge 196 Houston-West meets Sept. 10

The September meeting for Lodge 196, Houston-West will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, September 10—just before the set-up for the District Five Fall Fun Day. Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, August 11, 2016, in the Sokol Club Room. Several arrived at 8 a.m. We stretched the Christmas quilt and before you knew it, we had quilters all around. Thank you, everyone, who came early to help quilt. We only had 12 members. Some had doctor’s appointments, some didn’t feel good, and some said it was just too hot to get out. I understand that, but we hope more come to our September meeting. We miss you all.

At noon time, President Irene said grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Ann Clagett and Dorothy Booth brought chicken salad sandwiches that were very good, and we had many other items and desserts. It was all good. Thank you, everyone. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed for William Adams, Antonio (Toni) Kubin, Jim Underwood, Kelly Boston (teacher at Ennis High School), F.E. (Bubba) Hoefer, Jr., and Vlasta Sramek. The “Our Father” was recited by all for the above and for our sick members. Ann Clagett read the minutes of our last meeting, which were approved. Dorothy Bobalek read the treasurer’s report for Dolores Vrana, which was also approved. Dolores was in Austin that week with her grandchildren. Dorothy Prachyl read a beautiful poem and announced August birthday celebrants Joann Brown, Kay Lynn Kovar, Geraldine Valek, and Frances Vinkler. A birthday card was signed for Frances Vinkler; get well cards were signed for Marie Vrla and Irene Prachyl. “Happy Birthday” was sung for Kay Lynn Kovar. We hope the others had nice birthdays. President Irene announced that next month is the last month for any recipes for our cookbook. If you have already turned in one or two, you can still bring more. She also announced that next month, she will be making

changes, adding on, and making updates to the guideline booklet. Ann Clagett volunteered to finish the Christmas quilt. Pat Fowler made a motion to give Ann $25 for completing the quilt. It was seconded by Dorothy Prachyl. Ann always volunteers, and she does such a good job. We thank her so much. President Irene’s tip of the day was how to stack material. Take a box and cut it in a certain size, wrap the material around the cardboard, and stack on a shelf like you would do books. That way, you can see what kind of material you have. I forgot to mention last month to thank Gay Williams from Fort Worth for all the many items she donated for the raffle and white elephant sale many, many beautiful items, and all were appreciated so much. I was lucky to win a couple of the items. I want to mention and thank someone for donating several boxes of fabric and craft items to the Circle which were left at the Sokol door with no name. There were so many different kinds of fabrics. One was a bandana handkerchief pattern - Ann took that, and Kay Lynn will bring her a pattern for that which she has. I’m sure it will turn out really pretty. We very much appreciate all of the items. We wish we knew who brought it all. If you read this, thank you so much and come visit with us sometimes. We have missed Ginny Svehlak the last two meetings, and I understand

she will have to miss in September. Ginny’s husband Edwin has been sick, and he has to go for treatment to Dallas, I think every day. We hope all is going well. Let’s keep him in our prayers. Dorothy Bobalek was the 50-50 dollar winner, and President Irene announced the next meeting will be Thursday, September 8. We will quilt for Dolores Vrana, have a meeting and lunch, and the 50-50 dollar game.

Other News Dorothy Kudrna attended the wedding of her great-granddaughter Marissa Bailey (who is the granddaughter of Glenn Kudrna) and Dawson Frazer on Friday, August 12 at Milagro Farms in Forreston. They both live in Midlothian. It all sounded lovely. Everyone, try and make our September meeting. We miss you all. The

rains sure have been nice. Take care, and we hope to see you. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

State Youth Director posts September updates

What an exciting time we had this summer! I had a great time at the district camps and enjoyed the fun activities at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. I really enjoyed watching the youth interact with one another and how it helps them to come out of their comfort zone. I saw this happen with many new campers and experienced ones, too. Our leaders inspire them to be more confident in themselves, lead by example in teaching them to build lifelong friendships, and provide lasting memories from our SPJST camp. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped with State Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at the Temple Mayborn Center. Your assistance was greatly appreciated, and I could not have done

this without you. This year’s constructive items and special category projects were absolutely amazing.

Grandparents Day Sunday, September 11 is Grandpar-

ents Day. We all know that we live in a fast-paced world, but if we would slow down and take the time to visit with our grandparents, we would learn so much from them. Marian McQuade of Fayette County, West Virginia, is the founder of Grandparents Day. Her aspiration was that such an observance might persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage of their grandparents. The first presidential proclamation was issued in 1978, with one issued each year since, designating the first Sunday after Labor Day as national Grandparents Day. All youth club members are encouraged to honor their grandparents and the grandparents in their lodges during September.

Observe Czech Heritage Month in Texas in October All youth clubs are encouraged to observe - and celebrate - Czech Heritage Month at their October meeting. Something you may want to discuss at your September youth club meeting: During the 74th Legislature Session 1995, House Resolution 83 and Senate Resolution 1023 were passed designating the last full week in October beginning in 1995 as Czech Heritage Week in Texas. That declaration was expanded in 1999, when the 76th Legislature of Texas passed a resolution signed by Governor George W. Bush declaring that the month of October annually be observed as Czech Heritage Month in Texas to commemorate the contribu-

tions of Czech culture to the state.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: where did summer go?

Dear Vestnik, Where do I begin . . . well, this was my first year of being an LIT (Leaderin-Training). Whenever we went to district camp, I got to be an LIT for one of our newest lodge youth members. I had a lot of fun her LIT. We then went to State YAD with some of my projects. I didn’t place with them, but I received third place with special category which is not always an easy project to do sometimes. I also received second with our group talent. I was very excited when they announced Amanda Hoggard as the new State Queen. I couldn’t have been more proud of her since she is a also a member of my lodge. Alice Lunakova’s Texas Lecture Tour By Susan Chandler Czech Heritage Museum Administrator

Alice Lunakova spoke to packed rooms at all three Texas Czech museums on her lecture tour last month. Alice is a recent graduate of Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. She is presenting her bachelor’s thesis on Czech immigration in the early 1900s, for which she researched while in Texas last year. She is speaking at the Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Center tonight at Texas A&M University, College Station and will complete her tour on August 30 at the Keston Center, Baylor University in Waco. All the stars seem to have aligned for Alice concerning this topic and this tour. Although she is from Prague, she chose to attend college in the Moravia region, the area from which most of the first immigrants to Texas originated. At the time, Alice was completely unaware of the many enclaves of descendants of Czech immigrants living here. An English and French major at Masaryk, Alice sought an opportunity to study American English, but her school offered only one option for studying English abroad: McLennan Community College in Waco. So, Alice moved to Waco for the summer of 2014. While there, her Spanish professor took the two Czech transfer students to West, Texas. She was surprised to see menus in her native language at the Village Bakery and hear Czech spoken there. Unfortunately, it was at the end of her summer and the extent of her exposure to Texas Czechs at the time. When she returned to Brno, Alice realized that Czech immigration to Texas would provide a unique re-

VĚSTNÍK

search topic for her thesis. The problem was she could find very few source or academic documents in the libraries there. So, she returned to Waco in 2015 to conduct her research. Here is where the stars began to add up. While attending a YMCA yoga class, she met John Hillman, a semiretired CPA, and his wife Kathy Hillman, a librarian and director of the Keston Center at Baylor University. Kathy assisted Alice with her research. John drove Alice around Texas to the many Czech communities and venues. John and Alice visited the Czech Heritage Museum several times last summer, where Alice took advantage of our library and books on Texas Czech immigration. One of those books, Krasna Amerika: A Study of Texas Czechs, 1851-1939, by Clinton Machann and James Mendl was especially valuable to her research. I invited Alice to come back to Texas to lecture on it once she had completed her thesis. She brought her classmate and now colleague Anna Kabelkova of Olomouc, Moravia, Czech Republic. Anna was the perfect companion to bring. After Alice gave her presentation at our Svacina Social Hour, she and Anna engaged in some lively con-

versation with the audience. For most of the members of the Svacina Social Hour group, the Moravian dialect was their first language, spoken by their parents at home, here in Texas. Alice and Anna pointed out some of the differences of the Moravian and Bohemian regional accents and dialects. Some of the words that Texas Czechs used were not to be found in Czech dictionaries. However, Anna said that these words were still used in Moravia. Alice’s presentation at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange was also successful. The beautiful Hanslik Hall banquet room was packed and some of the audience members shared their family memories. Retta Chandler, president of TCHCC, hosted the event and screened a short video on Czech immigration produced by the Center. Afterward, Alice and Anna toured the Center’s library, exhibit hall, historic village and amphitheatre. Even Houston’s traffic and rain did not discourage friends of the Czech Center Museum Houston from driving to the museum district for Friday night’s event. Almost every seat was filled, and the audience brought intriguing questions for Alice to answer

Wednesday, September 7, 2016

after her lecture. Effie Rosene, chairman of the board, hosted the event at the elegant chateau-inspired museum, which houses three floors of Czech art, literature and artifacts. Jan Benes, a graduate student at Masaryk University and also from Olomouc, attended Alice’s lecture in La Grange and invited her to speak at his Czech class in College Station. Benes is studying at Texas A&M University under the William J. Hlavinka Fellowship, sponsored by the Czech Education Foundation of Texas. He has arranged for Alice to meet Dr. Machann, whose book was so crucial to her research. Alice will come full circle to close out her tour in Waco. Her sponsors, John and Kathy Hillman have arranged her presentation at the Keston Center. As part of her duties at the Keston Center, Kathy reports to Oxford College in England regularly, so earlier this year, the Hillmans visited Alice and her family in Prague. This trip inspired Kathy to begin preparations for an event in the future on Czech topics at the Keston Center. Stay tuned! —SPJST—

TCGS, Slovacek’s offer “Old Fashioned Red Wieners”

Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) exists to help preserve family history. In addition to “rounding up our Czech ancestors,” we also seek to learn and preserve Czech culture, traditions, and history. How many of you remember going to the local meat market and buying “red wieners”? Weren’t they wonderful! Well, you have the opportunity to once again enjoy these old-fashioned treats. TCGS and Slovacek’s are joining together for a TCGS fundraiser to “en-

hance our genealogy resources” during our fall seminar on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Sales are open to the public so we invite all Slovacek’s wiener fans (and those wanting to try them for the first time) to place orders. Snook and Slovacek’s famous “Old Fashioned Red Wieners” (package of 5 links equals 1 pound for $4 per package) are only made twice a year and will be available to both TCGS members and the public on Saturday, September 24 at Caldwell Civic and Visitor Center, 103 Presidential Corridor (Highway 21) in Caldwell from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is recommended that you pre-order by contacting Merlene Bravenec at bravema@sbcglobal.net or 254-778-7285. Packages may also be purchased at the door as long as supplies last. Payment may be made in cash or by check to TCGS. Also, remember that TCGS’s fall seminar, “Rounding Up Czech Ancestors,” is open to anyone interested in learning more about the history of Czech immigrants. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the program will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The seminar will feature four speakers:

• Doug Kubicek, a 28-year Texas history instructor for Hallettsville ISD, will discuss the stubborn determination of the Texas Czech pioneers not to plow under their cotton crops when the Federal Price Support Programs were initiated in the 1930s (“Defiant Lavaca County Czech Cotton Farmers Became Wealthy Land Owners”).

• Paul Krugler, Leon and Mary Prause, members of Austin Metal Detecting Club, will relay how metal detecting can help peek into history and follow up their presentation with a chance for the audience to do their own metal detecting searches during the lunch break (“Metal Detecting— A Means of Peeking into History”).

• Helmuth Schneider, who worked for 45 years exploring petroleum, will leverage those skills into helping those with Czech ancestry locate their ancestral homes and farms in the Czech Republic, using stable cadastral maps and special protocol documents he has obtained from the archives in Prague and Brno, as well as share what he has discovered for your particular village of interest (“Do This Before Going to the Czech Republic”). • T.J. Slansky, who has worked with

the church archives in Opava, Moravia, since 1990, will share his extensive Excel indexes used to locate birth, marriage, house numbers, and death details from the random storage order of the archives; his techniques also work for the other Moravian and Bohemian archives (“Researching the Czech Archives on the Web”).

Czech gift items, along with TCGSpublished research books (including the three newest books covering the Frydek-Mistek, Vsetin, and Zlin areas), will be available for sale. A silent auction will also be held so

Victoria Czech Heritage Festival Sunday, Sept. 25

The 31st Annual Victoria Czech Heritage Festival is big celebration on Sunday, September 25, 2016, at the Victoria Community Center, 2905 East North Street. The festival sponsored by the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society (VCCHS) has drawn a thousand or more people consistently for more than three decades now. Events begin with four musical performances held throughout the day. Internationally known accordionist, arranger, composer, and teacher from Galveston, Shelia Lee, will perform first engaging the crowd in traditional Czech entertainment promptly at 10

am. The Shiner Hobo Band takes over at 11 a.m. and entertains all until 1 p.m. followed by Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six Polka band from Hutto. Then the Red Ravens Band will join Fritz Hodde at 4 p.m. for a one-half hour jam session. The Red Ravens follow solo continuing with good dancing music for all until 7:30 p.m. Czechs are long in tradition and as a result have again added several cultural demonstrations/lessons to this year’s festival. Attendees will learn the art of dancing, playing the accordion, and playing the Tarok card game. In fact, for the first time ever, admission is free to the entire festival to anyone less than 35 years old who pre-registers for one of the lessons by September 23. Shelia Lee, accordionist who teaches accordion lessons throughout the world via the internet and has literally hundreds of students at any one time will teach piano and diatonic or button accordion lessons free at the festival . . . plus you get into the festival free if you are less than 35 years young. Shelia says, “Bring your accordion or we’ll have a few extra and we’ll learn to play Julida, A Ja Sam, Doudlebska Polka and more. This class is for all levels – beginner to timid! Even intermediate players will

Wednesday, September 7, 2016

learn a few tricks! Reserve now – seats are limited. Ages 8 to 100! Accordion lessons are from 11:15 a.m. till 3 p.m. Oh, and the free dance lessons? Dance enthusiast and partners Elaine Rosquist from Colorado and Louis Stewart from Moulton will be teaching one-hour classes of polka, waltz, and two-step dancing from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the annex. Specially held again for the younger generation to perfect this art and get their step in the right direction, if you pre-register for this, you get into the festival free if you are less than 35 years young. Come on teens to 35, let’s learn to dance a polka! Free! Then you can dance to the festival bands till 7:30 p.m. practicing what you learned. Get your partner (if you want) and sign up! Joe Pustka of Victoria is one of the founding members of this Czech festival, and he will be teaching how to play the Czech card game known as Tarok or Taroky at the festival. In fact,

27

this festival was founded with the intent to teach the fun game of Taroky and promote the heritage. It too is free, and you get into the festival free if you are less than 35 years young. Two playing classes will be held: 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. And, for the first time, the festival is serving wine—specially imported Czech wine. Czechs traditionally have made and served wine and in fact, even though the Czech Republic is only one-third the size of Texas, there are more than 80,000 wineries there. The import ban was recently lifted, and the festival will have available both red and white wines by the glass from the Czech Republic. Of course, there is plenty of pivo (beer) at the festival, too! Come by for a refreshing glass of wine or a cold pivo. The Czech Heritage Museum will again be available at the festival. Come see numerous old Czech items your great-grandparents used in their

daily lives. Also coming this year for your personal family research is the State Czech Heritage Traveling Genealogy Library with loads of books and research files to trace your genealogy. The festival will continue to serve its famous Czech stew and sausage lunch plate for $10 each from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. And the famous Czech fruitfilled kolaches and klobasniky, or “pig in a blanket” along with homemade chicken noodle soup will also be available throughout the day. Sausage wraps are available after lunch. Other activities include children games, pastry wheel, arts and crafts, country store, live and silent auction, prize drawing, and numerous exhibit booths for all to enjoy. Come join in the fun! There is something for everyone! And, you don’t have to be Czech to attend! Admission is only $8 per person for all three bands and all activities - with youth under 15 years of age always free and free admission to those 35 or less if they pre-register for one of the lessons.
